The scorpion den is punk
walk with me... ↓
The big idea
First, let’s walk through punk: what is it? Cambridge Dictionary defines punk as “a style or culture popular among young people... expressing opposition to authority through shocking behavior, clothes, and hair.” Contrary to popular belief, it's more than fashion and music: it’s a longstanding subculture which has existed since the 1970s. While looking for more definitions of punk, I found that a lot of people were saying different things - some say punk originated as an anti-racist subculture, while others say it was anti-authoritarian first. Either way, most people seem to agree that punk is loudly against injustice of any kind.
But how does this tie into the scorpion den?
First, it's important to consider what the scorpion den is by the time we are introduced to it: a crowded sandy city populated mostly by outcasts, deserters and veterans of the sandwing succession war. Most dragons of the scorpion den (outside of the talons of power and kind of outclaws) are not wealthy by any means, with a general stance against war and authorities like the sand kingdom. So, perfect breeding grounds for a punk revolution. The ideals of the scorpion den align very strongly with the ideals of punk, and It would be very easy for punk culture to manifest alongside its subculture cousins like riot grrl and emo.
The logistics of scorpion punk
Sandwings and Skywings of the scorpion den would probably be the first purveyors of punk, with both tribes heavily affected by tyranny, war and authoritarianism around the same time (Sandwing succession + Queen scarlet both come to power in the same..ish... timeframe.) I imagine these dragons talked a lot in the den, realized they had something and common and began accessorizing to identify each other or themselves. The harsh, loud, spiky appearance gives a distinct style, while also making it harder for other dragons (or guards!) to grab hold of these dragons during a fight - which they would likely have a lot of. Wood was burnt to make charcoal, which could be combined with oils or water to make a cheap, effective dye when squid ink imports were unavailable/too expensive. Spikes were fashioned from cactus thorns or cheap smelted metals, sometimes even sewn into the scales for that extra weaponry.
These functional design choices must've caught like fire to a dead tree, becoming more and more popular until they were a commonality across the punks of all tribes. Eventually, Scorpion punk became more creative - dyes and paints were used on sandwing frills, and thin black linens could be pulled over the neck or arms to create a fishnet-like accessory. In some extreme cases, dragons would even bend or clip their frills/spikes to create a more thorny appearance.
What about the Outclaws?
The biggest issue with this idea is undoubtedly the presence of the outclaws: an authority in an anti-authority space. Most of the individual dragons that make up the outclaws would probably lean into scorpion punk: if you look at Six-claws, Thorn and Kindle, all of them could easily be punk. Still, their presence kind of disrupts the whole vibe... until you look a little closer at what the outclaws are actually doing.
As described by the wiki, the outclaws are described as a group of peacekeepers who control (and distribute) water from the oasis equally, as well as providing free meals and persistently giving resources to the scorpion den. These traits are still very comparable to punk, only softer on the anti-authoritarianism. I would suggest the outclaws are more alike a punk gang, upholding their community in spite of the mistrust other dragons have of them.
Speaking of, the general response to punk outclaws would probably be to call them posers. Its been stated in the books that some dragons in the scorpion den think the outclaws are secret recruiters for the war, and the same sentiment could easily carry over to the honesty of their punkness.
in conclusion, the punks of the scorpion den undoubtedly outlast the sandwing succession war: remaining and integrated part of their community and culture for decades to come.
If you made it this far, thank you so much for listening to me prattle! I tried to keep it short and leave room for imagination, so do with this what you will. I'll see you guys this weekend for some perfectly punk sandwing redesigns!

Wof tribes redesign again!!!!! Ive been figuring out how to make them quadroped wingwalkers with malleable hands in a way that i like. I gave them pterosaur swag cause theyre my fav beasts.
notes under tha cut
Ancestral traits of my headcannon tribes
feathers, exterior ears, six limbs, beaks with teeth, wing walking, thumb knucklewalking
skywings- upright posture with long long limbs, lacking a wing thumb for a more aerodynamic build, reduced tail. They have the hottest fire and hunt aerial prey, they are highly mobile in the air.
Icewings- tallest tribe, black skin under feathers. Clear feathers, feathers on neck modified to form shiny/pearlescent spikes. They rattle when they move and they persist ant hunt large land prey.
Nightwings- Covered in iridescent star spots, have grooves on their patagium to facilitate silent flight (a la owl), and have fluff around their beaks. They have really good hearing.
rainwings- Standard posture has flexible neck folded, feathers and scales can change color. Small, elliptical wings allow for fast pursuit through thick forest but are not good for long distance flight. Short legs are better for climbing then running.
Mudwing- Has tusks that grow through the lower jaw and thick armor and osteoderms. Secondarily featherless and wallow to avoid sun damage. Sit and wait ambush predators, a la crocodile, squat posture means they are not efficient walkers.
Sandwing- Long limbs, mane down back with quill spines. dark skin to protect against sun damage, Ossicones! Grapple flying prey and immobilize them with their tail stingers.
Seawings- Largest dragons, thick webbed spines on back that can flatten down, short wings permit flight but are not efficient. Better at swimming then walking or flying. Barbles on face are sensory organs.
i plan on designing clothes for these things at some point

PUT SOME CLOTHES ON
I was going to do the one big image I had of the, but it was blurry so here’s a bunch of smaller ones

Here’s the big one btw and a typed-out version of my handwriting :

Going top down from seawings to nightwings:
From top left in seawing drawing to the right is 'full coverage in wet robes (especially gills), 'sun visor' 'slits for wings' 'shoes for delicate feet' underlined is 'sea commoner' 'to reduce swimming drag, most wear only a few bags and tools' next underlined is 'sea nobility ' 'lots of flowy expensive fabrics (instead of woven seaweed) + other expensive stuff like pearls'
Underlined is 'sky soldier' to the right is 'light leather and mail' below to the left is 'net and stab from above' then by the foot is 'main weapons are talons and sword'. To the upper right underlined is 'sky civilian' ->'wing "shoe " stays on during flight ' below that is 'bone jewelry and stone colors' below that is 'rarely touch ground for long+actual shoes are unnecessary weight, so they just wear "socks" '
Underlined in the upper left is 'sled merchant ' below that is pointing to the 'wings steer' to the far right is 'cloak can be pulled up or down for wings' back to the lower left near the front feet it's ' studs on shoes to replace claws for grip' pointing to the 'ground soldier (which is underlined to the right) it says 'goggles for snow glare' below that is 'stronger wing arms used to strike' near the bottom it says 'pick and grappling hook' and then in far bottom right it says 'air troops have less clothing and operate via fast, powerful dive strikes'
From top left it's ' imported jewlery' right above the underlined 'spear fisher' below that is 'hunting is done using stealthy bursts' going to the right of that us the underlined 'saltwater marsh dweller' and up pointing at the green striped clothing is 'colors help deter flies' to the right of that is the 'throw helper'
'Cowl carving of the three moons' by the head of the pink one, 'constantly changing' by their wing. To the right is the underlined 'dancer' bottom right is the underlined 'forager' underneath says 'usually only wear gathering basket for max camo'
Starting at the head of the upper sandwing says 'mask for sand' below that is 'carrying most belongings' by rhe feet is the underlined 'nomad' and to the right by their leg covering is 'meant to blend in' while the worss by the tail say 'tail and front claws exposed for climbing and hunting' going back to the left under the underlined nomad says 'some cities require citizens to bundle their tail upon entry' and directly to the right is 'nomads are more likely to use weapons to preserve their sting' the underlined bit directly to the right says 'oasis settler' under that it says 'shoes b/ of paved streets' near the wings it says 'wings only exposed for heat dispersion, relatively less used'
Upper left is 'goggles and mask because of smoke/ash' below that is underlined 'worker'. Words pointing to the white robed one's head say 'goes outside less, more jewlery/gadgets because of status' next to that is 'glasses to male up for farsightedness' upper underlined word is 'scholar', to the right is 'covered wings as a symbol of importance (they get taken places rather than flying themselves)'

Last Tribe A Day run cycle was today so I decided to combine them all to show the differences!
ID under the cut
[ID: Seven sketchy animated run cycles, all of the original dragon tribes from Wings of Fire. They alternate sides as they go down, starting with the top one on the left and the second on the right, and so on. The background is a blank white. Each dragon has shaded limbs to help see the differences while in movement. The right wing is the darkest shade, followed by the left wing (closest to the screen), the the right legs are the lightest shaded. Descriptions are in order from top to bottom:
Mudwing: Drawn in a dark red. The thickest dragon by far, opening is mouth in a smile as its front legs hit the ground. Its large wings have four toes as if they were a third set of talons, which is used as another set of legs while running. The wings lift off after the back legs. The entire body bobs with its weight while it runs, lunging with its back legs. One of its back legs disappears while it runs (oopsies) and its large tail flicks with the run.
Skywing: Drawn in a darker red. Much skinnier dragon with longer limbs and larger wings. Its large wings remain slight open above its border, slightly bobbing as it moves. The body itself doesn’t move up and down, instead just twisting with movement of its limbs. Its tail is a little stiff, again just moving up and down. As it runs, one foot touches and leaves the ground at a time.
Icewing: Drawn in a dark blue. Its body and shape is ridgid, its head swooping up and down like it lunges with every time its front talons land. Again, its wings are used as a third pair of legs, however they are mostly used after the other limbs are mid-air. Its talons are visibly sharper, as well as its wings. Sharp spines on the back of its neck and end of its tail are visible as well, which bobs with the movement.
Seawing: Drawn in a dark blue. A thicker, long dragon with short but thick limbs and webbed frills along its spine and sternum. It’s thick tail continues the up and down curve it’s body makes with every move, flicking the end of the frills as it does. Its wings are semi open above its body, bobbing with the running movement and tilting up and down as its spine curves.
Sandwing: Drawn in a warm brown. Long limbs but thicker than skywing. All four feet lift of the air when they’re closest during the run, each foot hitting the ground one at a time. It’s barbed scorpion-like tail bobs up and down at the end. Its wings are folded and stuff near its shoulders, tilted diagonally. A solid frill lines its spine, biggest at the back of its neck and above the back legs.
Nightwing: Drawn in a dark purple grey, and by far the stiffest run cycle. Thick body with short but thinner legs than mudwings or seawings. Spikes line the spine all along its body, longest at the back of the neck and back of the body. Its wings are held stiffly and slightly folded over its body. Other than the legs and tail, most of the nightwing barely moves as it runs, and its legs hit the ground in pairs, front legs then back legs. They don’t even cross between each other at the closest part in the run. Its mouth opens and closes as it runs, not in any particular expression, I was just bored.
Rainwing: Drawn in a muted dark green. By far the bounciest run. It has a thin body and a head I accidentally drew a little big. It’s three-toed wings are used as a third pair of legs, used most right before it’s front legs hit the ground. Its front legs hit the ground at different time, however the back legs hit and leave together. Its tail is by far the longest, curled at the end and slightly unraveling as it flicks up and down. Beneath the curved horns is a frill with two connections that slight opens and closes with the movement. It’s grin also opens and closes with the movement.

Sandwings, Draco arenicolus
My lovely babies. Mostly the same as my original ones, but a bit more armored like an armadillo. Also new chin spikes and a forward facing nose spike for funsies. They're well built for walking long distances and do so quite regularly, and have good low-light vision, as walking during the night is much less energy-taxing than flying during the day. Their flat feet and blunt claws help with this as well.
This Sandwing is doing a very good example of a defensive posture, as Sandwing bellies are much less armored than their backs, they lower themselves and may even flatten themselves entirely when engaging in a fight.
Also I will be continuing my long-eared Sandwing propaganda and no one can stop me :)

You said sandwings were your favorite, so would you be willing to do Queen Thorn?
of course! I'm aware this design takes some explaining to do, but trust me... this IS Queen Thorn.
I think of all the times I've made a post that starts with 'this might be the time I take too much liberty,' THIS really takes the cake.
Thinking about Thorn as a character, I really wanted to bring out her more scorpion-den side, even if the redesign is set after she becomes queen. I feel that Thorn's most admirable quality as a ruler is her strong sense of identity and belonging among the citizens of the sandwing kingdom, and thought it unreasonable that she would make any real effort to dress/appear different after becoming queen (even if it caused a little uproar among sandwing nobles.)
Because of this, I decided to incorporate a lot of punk design aspects (for any new readers, my last post is about the scorpion den being punk.) She has a lot of spikes sewn/fastened directly to her under scales, as well as a little vest and tail bracelet with the outclaw patch sewn in. I wanted to give her some kind of royal-leaning attire without losing the vibe, so I added these leather-ish, chain-ish back piece meant to resemble a cape. Kind of. Onto her scales: Thorn's design is very on the nose: with thorn patterns (based on the name) and swirl patterns (reminded me of sand.) Finally, her frills are dyed! I imagine Thorn probably uses a blend of papaya or prickly pear cactus to get the job done, but the ends fade with time. That kind of makes me wonder if sandwing frills grow like hair..
--
As always, thank you all so much for your support and continued appreciation of this blog! If you're interested in making a request or viewing which characters are on the redesign waitlist, check my pinned post! I'm still working on determining my art comp prizes, but I can confidently tell you all it will probably be a redesign or draw in your style challenge!
