What is some fiction outside of the mythos or DG that you look to for inspiration?

Excellent, fun question. I've been on a narrowboat trip through the countryside and hadn't had a lot of time to get my thoughts out so this is a great way to get back in the headspace actually. This isn't going to be the most coherent answer in the world but off the top of my head here's some ideas and recommendations in no particular order.

Philip K Dick-- I've talked about his work a bit before, less because of his works themselves (there's a lot there that's problematic and can be cut) and more because he really channels that bridge between Lovecraft's historic paranoia and a modern contemporary setting

Basically any works by Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, and Grant Morrison-- I feel like I don't need to say a lot about these authors, they really are the triarchy that serve as the prime example of how to distill complex occult principles into media. They really paved the way for how to take an abstract idea and shape it into fiction as a way to sort of upload an idea into another person's brain.

Rawhead Rex by Clive Barker and Les Edwards-- this graphic novel really was my gateway into horror as something more complex than the slasher / torture porn that was en vogue when I was growing up which had previously turned me off of the genre.

Strangehaven by Gary Spencer Millidge-- beautiful and inspiring labor of love about a small town subject to extraordinary circumstances

Mononoke & Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales-- Beautiful stories that give a window into how another culture expresses the same ideas as a lot of the works above

Satoshi Kon's movies to me really tap into the same energy as Philip K Dick but without a lot of the ugliness and much more beauty. Perfect Blue and Tokyo Godfathers are my two favorites to the point that I honestly get emotional just thinking about them.

I don't need to tell you about Akira, but I will absolutely recommend you don't discount it's more low brow contemporaries like Urotsukidoji and Wicked City for some fucked up exploitation anime.

Possession (1981) is genuinely my all time favorite work of surrealist horror and a cornerstone for a lot of my ideas

Society (1989) what if Possession was even more fucked up & grind house but also silly? :3c

Obviously X-Files, Twin Peaks, and True Detective are giant influences but I'd like to recommend a fourth "weird cop" show-- FX's Fargo. The original movie was already a true crime classic but the show really takes it to 11. Season 2 is probably my favorite for reasons that will be apparent for anyone who's watched it.

Lastly the bulk of media I regularly consume is usually actually non-fiction. History, particularly US history, is fucked up and clown shoes enough that it has all the inspiration you might need if you just have a good source that can present it as an interesting narrative. Last Podcast on the Left is a good gateway into this but there's plenty of other more "serious" sources that can still be just as entertaining like the podcast Blowback. Once you're able to put history into a narrative you can be entertained by and feel invested in it becomes a lot more interesting to read books from authoritative sources that help feed into that interest because you have an emotional connection to it instead of it just being a series of context-less names and dates.

Predicting the matchups of Masters 8 Tournament in Pokémon (2019)/Journeys

Alright, I've come up with three different options for Masters 8 tournament, WITH the assumption that it's gonna have brackets like in SwSh games. Meaning no random select between rounds.

Option 1:

This is kinda want I want the most, with Shirona vs Iris match being a dream match I NEED to see happen, and Satoshi vs Alan match being the one that would basically "redeem" Kalos League (quote marks because I don't think it needs redeeming per say, but it would be a nice way for Satoshi to finally beat one of his biggest rivals). Diantha vs Daigo is also something I reaaaally want to see, which kinda leaves a rematch between Wataru and Dande. Which I, sadly don't see happening. So it may be that this option is out of the picture.

And here comes option 2:

Basically, Iris vs Wataru, which would be an "aim to be Dragon Master" vs "Dragon Type user" match, which HONESTLY would be something so good to see for iris, with her winning! Another fun matchup would be Mega Charizard X vs Gigantamax Charizard, thus Alan vs Dande. And I have dreamed of seeing a real match between Satoshi and Carne, thus I paired the two. Daigo and Shirona don't really have synergy, but it would be a nice cross-generation match between Champions of Hoenn and Sinnoh, imo.

And then, option 3:

Basically being what I pictured as Satoshi's matchups before Alan reveal. One connecting pair you can see between these options is that Satoshi ALWAYS battles against Shirona. Because that's the matchup I definitely see happening and WANT to see happening. And the only other change here is Satoshi vs Wataru (because of being the first Masters 8 character to be revealed alongside Dande), and Iris would now be against her weakness, Fairy type user Carne. It's honestly one of those matchups I'd LOVE to see Iris win in! To show she's able to counter such a huge weakness. It would definitely help in her Dragon Master journey!

So, yeh. those are my options for matchups. It could honestly be in different orders tbf, since both Kalos League and Alola League randomized matchups each round, but this is basically what I would love to see happen. And, ofc, predicting Alola Champion as the winner in all three cases. Probably bold, but I believed in him during Alola League, so I'll believe in him here as well ♥

Don’t apologise for rambling. I do appreciate it. Maybe a bit of my discontent comes from some fans who like to advertise that Alain didn’t deserve to win the Kalos league or he cheated or he got plot armour etc. I think what they fail to understand is that match was no longer just a battle between Ash&Alain,Greninja&Charizard but the battle b/w their ideologies&why they were battling in the1st place. Which in Ash’s case was to be d strongest& in Alan’s to be d strongest to protect loved ones.

pt2: I just think Alain doesn’t deserve the flak he gets from the fandom. I think his reason to fight/his resolve was stronger than Ash’s and that’s why he won. Because mega evolution draws power from the resolve of the trainer as said in TSME. If anything I just want journeys to resolve that somehow. Also I love your idea of Daigo going easy on Alain. I would totally want ash vs Alain to be a semis match. Unlikely as it seems. Btw It was fun talking to you& seeing your great ideas,have a great day❤️

Ohhhh! That’s v interesting, and I think all interpretations are valid, because it’s true that on my end, I didn’t tend to think of the whole Satoshi vs Alain as an ideology vs ideology fight. For Paul vs Satoshi, I do agree it’s an ideology vs ideology fight, but for Alain, I have always interpreted it as Satoshi obliviously making Alan take a first step out of a very, very bad place :)

Until meeting Satoshi, Alan was in a very bad mental state, and I agree he has an ideology of winning ‘to be the strongest to protect loved ones’ but so much of it was Fleurdelys manipulating him (and I think of this post, which does a brilliant analysis) it’s an ideology that does him more harm than good, and isolates him. Satoshi brings out a more candid / happier side to Alan, less burdened, which makes him forget that ideology for a bit, so I tend to view that finale match as Satoshi simply making Alan want to do something for himself (a baby step towards a better place even if Alan doesn’t know it), outside of all that Alan feels like he HAS to do (protect loved ones, gather mega-evo energy etc). His ideology still taints his fun with Satoshi throughout their battle, but I tend to see the starting point as Alan subconsciously wanting some sort of solace or release from all his burdens. 

Similarly, I’ve seen the win as a very technical win, since Alan has been at it longer, breezed through the Gyms, Mega-Charizard X is part dragon-type so doesn’t even have a type-weakness to water, etc AND of course, yes, Alan’s resolve+deep bond with Lizardon. 

I fully agree that Alan doesn’t deserve hate in any case! and I have definitely seen more theories with Alan as the first match with Satoshi to get him out of the way. That could very well be the outcome! I suppose I tend to give Alan too much importance narratively skadljksjla But if I were to do it, I’d do it this way.

just Some of the instances of satoshi understanding / “translating” pokemon   ( not counting pkmn communicating w/ telepathy re understanding )  :

if you take into consideration the manga, in one of the manga chapters [x] satoshi is able to understand & literally translate what a lucario is saying.

in xy/z004 dedenne thanking citron for giving it electricity, pikachu saying dedenne wants to come with the kalos squad.

in xy/z038 his luchabull saying “please bear with me” to his keromatsu.

in xy/z074 replied “yeah, it’s strong” to his luchabull most likely saying [shushupu] is tough / strong.

in xy/z106 replied “yeah, i am too” to his gekkouga most likely saying it was exhausted after the first battle with alan.

in sm101 corrected dia saying his zeraora was telling satoshi & pikachu to knock off their training by saying “that’s wrong; it’s saying it’ll help us train !! ” .

okay but you gushing over that lizardon gif is like...a real good detail because!!! I dont think the average person would expect lizardons to be agile on their feet! even satoshi would often order his lizardon to take to the sky to dodge something so they'd be trained for aerial maneuverability. so it speaks to how well alan's lizardon is trained because of how deftly it can move on ground as well as in the air IT'S A REAL NICE DETAIL I THINK

Charizard aren’t slow, but they aren’t known to be speed-based ‘mon, either. In fact, most people would expect Lizardon specifically to be trained for strength rather than speed given that he mega evolves into ‘Zard X, and it’s ‘Zard Y that’s more focused on Speed and Special Attack rather than straight up Attack. And even setting that aside, again, charizard aren’t pokémon that typically focus on speed, and particularly not speed while on the ground. Most people wouldn’t expect that because they have wings, and their movesets are often focused on sweeping opponents. Even in non-Pokémon titles like Smash Bros., you see that charizard is focused more on power rather than speed.

But as they so often do, Alan and Lizardon blow those expectations out of the water. They’re prepared for just about everything. We see their hypervigilance at numerous different points throughout the series (e.g. how Alan doesn’t open up to others / trust easily, how Lizardon never removes his eyes from Malva when she comes to talk to them during the League), but I feel that the lengths to which they’ve trained also speaks to that a bit. Of course they both want to be the strongest they can be—they want to “stand at the top,” as it were—but not only are they aiming for such strength so that they can handle any threat that might come to them or their loved ones (i.e. they’re preparing so they can fight back against hypothetical attackers), but they also go above and beyond most training regimen. As you said, most charizard trainers would have their charizard take to the sky in order to dodge attacks, but while Lizardon can do that, he and Alan have also trained so that he can dodge around an extremely agile ninja frog known for its speed and agility. Greninja is a fragile speedster; it’s not particularly strong and its defense is nothing to write home about, but it’s one of the fastest and most agile pokémon out there. Yet Lizardon, who weighs 122 lbs more than Greninja, is able to easily dodge around Greninja’s strikes, barely lifting his feet off the ground as he does so. And what’s more, if you watch, he’s moving on the heels of his feet. He rocks back onto his heels and skips around Greninja that way, using his wings to lift him just enough off the ground so that he can do it more easily. He swings all two hundred of his pounds around like it’s nothing, while Greninja tries and fails to hit him.

Amazing.

And speaking of dodging via the air, it should be noted that Alan and Lizardon have also prepared for other charizard trainers doing that against them. During the first round of the League Alan faced Trevor, who had his own charizard. At one point the arena became covered in smoke, so Trevor ordered his charizard to take to the sky. And at that point, one of the most incredible things in the PokéAni happened:

Alan looked at where Trevor’s charizard was for a grand total of three seconds (and yes, I counted via the episode time bar—it was three seconds), and then, knowing where Lizardon was in the smoke, gave him the exact angle, by degrees, that he’d need to fire Flamethrower at in order to hit. And he did. Lizardon was able to shoot Trevor’s charizard out of the sky with a direct hit, meaning that flying into the sky to get out of a sticky situation did not help Trevor or his charizard at all. As Clemont says after this occurs:

Alan and Lizardon do share an amazingly close bond, yes. They have a bond that overcomes reason, one that surpasses its limitations. But they’ve also trained, and trained, and trained, and trained. That Alan can pick out an exact angle like that, by sight alone, within seconds is incredible. That Lizardon, too, knows what that means and knows where to fire in accordance with Alan’s instructions is incredible. It’s not just that Lizardon followed the command, but that he knew exactly what to do in order to do it. Enemies can’t escape them by air. Lizardon’s wings aside, he can and will shoot them down in a snap, and Alan knows just what to say to get him to do it.

Alan and Lizardon are incredible. They are master class. Accept no substitutes.

My case in Kalos:

AmourShipping / SatoSere (Ash/Satoshi & Serena): Okay I’m pretty sure I don’t even need to say it, but THIS THE MOST CANON ASH SHIP WE WILL PROBABLY GET! When XY was first announced 2013, and read the bio for Serena’s character as a “childhood friend” of Ash’s I WAS STOKED. I said to myself back then, are we actually going to have a traveling partner that has a confirmed crush on Ash? The series definitely did not disappoint on delivering this shipping fan service, especially on Serena’s part, but at the same time I was glad that her character wasn’t fully focused on it as well because of her own development as a Pokémon Performer. Ash’s attitude helped Serena motivate herself on doing better, and never giving up no matter if she wins or loses. Every moment and interaction they had were glorious, and loved every second of it! When an episode of XY starts, amourshippers are always on the lookout! Favorite moment - A lot of moments to mention, but without a doubt my favorite is the childhood flashback scene where they first met at Oak’s Summer Camp. Poor baby Serena scared out of her life with that boo boo, until Ash came along and helped her up! That moment when he had her in his arms, I KNEW THE INTERNET WAS GOING TO EXPLODE. As an active member of serebiiforums during the premiere of that episode, it was definitely the talk of the town under the anime section! Wherever you go there it was an AmourShipping frenzy, and from there started this craze of a ship.

DiodeShipping / SatoShito (Ash/Satoshi & Clemont/Citron): Clemont and Ash is probably my favorite friendship among his male companions. I know I said that Cilan was the best tag team partner, but I feel that Clemont has a stronger brotherhood with Ash. I mean they sleep together in the same tent, Ash always clings his arms to him every time he’s proud of something Clemont does, and Ash geeks out on EVERYTHING he makes despite it exploding later on. Like with AmourShipping, Clemont looks up to Ash and drives him to never give up with whatever trials he may face in order to achieve his goals. They’re either blood brothers or gay lovers...you decide?! Favorite moment - 100% their gym battle! It was fun, intense, and a huge development for both characters. Needs more bro hugs ;D

GeekChicShipping / ShitoSere (Clemont/Citron & Serena): This ship is definitely adorable for its own reasons! You have kind outgoing girl, and cautious nerdy boy who both are struggling with self-confidence in order to achieve their dreams. This ship definitely had its respectable moments when Ash wasn’t around in the group. In fact, it was I, the PokémonJesus, who created the first ever GeekChic thread in serebiiforums back in late 2013. Favorite moment - Instead of a moment, I would like to point out the fact that they both know how to cook?! Clemont makes the main dishes, and Serena specializes in the deserts. They are basically the dad and mom of the group xD Ash and Bonnie would not survive without them!

TinhYeuDichThucShipping (...yes that’s what this Kalos quad ship is called I am not even kidding when I did my research): No offense to Brock, May, or Max, but I definitely to prefer this quad pairing over them. The Kalos quad all have their fair share of interactions (as mentioned above), and I’m pretty sure Bonnie looks up to Ash and Serena as older siblings as well! I was also low-key hoping for her to have like an innocent kid-crush on Ash so maybe she can tease Serena with it, but I’m fine with how they interacted. Clemont being the good big bro he is, and the sisterhood shown between Bonnie and Serena were an awesome dynamic (same goes with Ash and Max in AG). With Ash being the definitive leader for this group (since their really isn’t an older figure or Clemont is just short), the most important trait of all is that the three of them look up to Ash, and they can all learn together from him, cheer him on, and maybe even be as strong as he is. Ash fan club jokes aside, I can see these four living in a small peaceful cabin somewhere in the fine forests of Kalos where they seek new adventures every day and help Pokémon in need (no, I don’t write fanfics). 

MarissonShipping (Alain/Alan & Mairin/Manon): Now this is one of the more unique shippings that you don’t see quite often from looks alone. I honestly would not think that the two main characters from the Mega Evolution specials would have much have a bigger role once the XY&Z arc started. Their relationship definitely had a rocky start since Mairin just looked like a stalker following Alain around for no apparent reason. Eventually he softened up to her by Act III (I think?) after Mairin protected him from the Mega Evolution chaos that was happening during their trip in Hoenn. And if you think about it, Alain entered the Kalos League BECAUSE of Mairin and her sick Chespin. If it wasn’t for this ship maybe Ash could have won the League. Mairin is that type of girl that bugs the boyfriend if she can go to her favorite store in mall, and Alain will probably be “oh fine alright” and buys her anything she wants because that’s how much he cares. Alain doesn’t really wanna show his affection much compared to Mairin, but that’s what I like about this cute ship. Favorite moment - The first hug they shared at the end of the 3rd act Mega Evolution. That pretty much sold the ship to me <3

Honorable mentions: As you can tell by my low quality picture collage skills, I do think Serena would make the most girlfriends among her friends/rivals xD Serena and Shauna was a relationship I looked forward to because of how I loved Shauna’s in-game character’s relationship with the player in X/Y. It pretty much as the same vibe with Serena and Aria being performer GFs and taking about how pretty cool they can be when it comes to outfits and stylish performances with their Pokémon. Serena and Miette however is a more aggressive relationship because of them fighting over flirting with Ash. Of course Ash still has no clue whatsoever, but it’s just funny how he’s the innocent little boy in all of this. Serena and Mairin are the best girl power BFFs support to their boys, and wished that they interacted more prior to the Kalos League. But what about Serena’s adorable Pokémon? Before evolving, I always thought that her Fennekin would be more closer to Ash’s Froakie. Would have made AmourShipping even greater! But Serena’s Eevee and Clemont’s Bunnelby were the adorable Pokémon ship for this series. Poor Eevee was scared of everyone’s Pokémon EXCEPT Bunnelby whom she’d hide behind him every time especially when Chespin tries to be friendly xD I can’t remember but I think there were a few interactions of them after Eevee evolved into a Sylveon. Moving on to the gym leader side of things is Viola and Grant’s cute relationship. It wasn’t seen in the games, but it was clearly obvious that these two could be more than just friends. Probably my favoritegmy leader shipping if you ask me. Ash and Korrina had a good dynamic too when she was temporarily traveling with them, and the group even admitted that the two are alike!(maybe just in hunger I don’t know lol) But let’s not forget Shōta’s senpai treatment to Satoshi. I think he is really the first rival that actually looked up to him and wanted to beat him respectfully. This boy has a handful of notes about Ash, and I’m not even surprised if it’s not just the battling styles and strategies found in that little note book of his ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Ok but I need to talk about JN108 a bit more, under the cut!

I am not gonna lie, I had quite a laughing episode after the episode because I just fricking knew that they wouldn't show Satoshi Gekkouga or even hint at the form, they even made sure that a flashback that included ALAN and his MEGA CHARIZARD-X didn't have Satoshi Gekkouga like, wtf sjhfgsfhsgfsf.

Say what you will, that IS a retcon. Indirect one at least. Because the flashback to specific event involving Satoshi Gekkouga doesn't involve it. They specifically avoided even mentioning it. They even had Satoshi do Satoshi-Gekkouga like bond movements WITHOUT the form! THAT NEVER HAPPENED! It always needed the form. Semi-perfect or perfect. A normal Gekkouga was never enough lol. It probably can be explained as their bond being stronger than ever but ajfsljfssfklsf. Nah.

I'm glad that it ended up that way thou, because now Lucario won't have anime-only form to follow up on Gekkouga. Like, phew. It did seem like Satoshi did indeed compare the bond he has with Gekkouga feeling like the bond he currently has with Lucario, so the similarity to aura is somewhat confirmed? Not directly, but strongly suggested. Makes me happy!

But like.... hm. I liked everything that involved Gekkouga. He felt like who he was, and his bond with Satoshi was super nostalgic. But Lucario indeed felt like a jealous puppy who was annoyed at Satoshi having someone who's bond is stronger than his lol. Or that he was weaker than Gekkouga. Really thou, I just kinda flashbacked to Pikachu and Wanpachi asfkjshfsjklsf. JN, stop doing jealousy plots. Please.

Luckily it didn't last long and there was a... weird scene between the two were they just, practiced moving water by an inch. I have no fricking idea what that was. Focusing practice? But like, even if Satoshi's Lucario is my least fav atm (and I hate that y'know), Gekkouga's mentoring with him was kinda nice.

But.... where's Puni-chan. No fricking mention of Puni-chan 😂 Gekkouga is just cutting weeds and never free from that job like, c'mooooooon. My dream episode plot was for Puni-chan and Gekkouga to return together and for this negative weed plot to end but nooo. Not allowed it seems. Fricking hell lol.

But cough. I may sound like I'm critisizing the ep a lot, but I actually enjoyed it still. It was VERY fanservice-y with the flashbacks and Gekkouga moments (except for Satoshi-Gekkouga semi-retcon cough) and I had fun time. I liked how Satoshi chose to go see Gekkouga at the sight of seeing Gou's Keromatsu evolve, like he got nostalgic at seeing Gekkouga again.

Koharu also had the best face, like:
