My thoughts on the ending
This is probably going to be a bit rambling and disconnected, so bear with me...
(This got far longer than I meant it to be...)
Does anyone else feel that the Deserter is a reflection of the person Harry could have been, if he hadn't lost his memory? The bitterness and anger and inability to let go of the past remind me of a lot of things that the Ancient Reptilian Brain and the Limbic System say in the dream sequences... I think that Harry's amnesia is a gift, in a way - it allows Harry to eventually let go of the past and decide what kind of person he wants to be now. One of the first dream sequences shows Harry a vision of himself as the hanged man, and I think in a way the old Harry did die when he lost his memories. One of the reasons the game was so affecting emotionally to me is that you as the player are the one getting Harry to turn his life around, if that's how you choose to play it, because it really makes you feel involved and part of Harry's story. It's one of the reasons why I don't think the game would work well as a TV adaptation - I think it would really lose a lot of its emotional impact without your input. It really moved me that I could get Harry to go from screaming that he "doesn't want to be that kind of animal any more", to telling the Phasmid: "I'm glad to be me - an incredibly sensitive instrument".
I really love how the tone of the game manages to be somehow hopeless and hopeful at the same time. Maybe the world is doomed by the Pale, and the Revolution failed, and maybe Revachol is a shithole, but... you can find that there are things worth loving and saving in this broken world. You're subconscious tries so hard to convince you that it's all terrible and evil and that you should just give up and let the darkness take you, but all of your actions through the game can prove that voice wrong. It tells you you're not helping anyone, but depending on how you play the game, you are: you found Billie's husband, and even though he's dead, at least now she knows and won't have to wait forever for him to come home when he won't; Cuno has someone who actually listens to him and takes what he has to say seriously; you got Plaisance to bring Annette in from the cold; you stopped the mercenaries from killing as many people as they might otherwise have done (it went pretty badly in my playthrough, but I tried), and you gave Kim a friend. I love the message it seems to be trying to put across that even if the world is ultimately doomed, you can and should still try to find the good in it, and make a small part of it a better place. And maybe in the end it won't change anything, but the fact that you had hope enough to try matters. And maybe if enough people thought that way, they could change reality for the better - maybe there was a grain of truth in that infra-materialist stuff all along. Maybe it sounds corny, but I found it very touching.
This is... sort of where the Phasmid comes in for me, because everyone thought the existence of the Insulindan Phasmid was impossible, but because you believed in it enough, you were able to prove it was real. And if the Phasmid is real, then maybe other things that people thought were impossible can happen, too... It makes me feel very satisfied that I chose "SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL IS GOING TO HAPPEN" when I painted that wall. It seems fitting.
I also love the fact that the Deserter being stuck in the past is literally killing him. And... he talks a big game about being the last real Communist or whatever, but in the end, how is he actually helping the working class by clinging to his bitterness and refusing to let go of what could have been, instead of trying to do something to help the people around him? Even though Harry is flawed, and on his own can't change the world, he's made a difference to the people around him, which is better than being consumed by bitterness and doing nothing at all.
In the end, I think for me one of the core themes of the game is faith/belief (not necessarily in a religious sense)... I think that something that really helps is Kim's belief in Harry. He's so kind to Harry, when he could just as easily write him off as a shambling alcoholic. I think Kim's faith in you makes you want to live up to what he thinks of you, so... I'm not sure how coherent I'm being here, but it's a bit like how Harry believing in the Phasmid lets him make it a definite reality - Kim's belief in Harry as a great detective, or someone who could be a great detective, makes Harry a better person, I think. (At least, that's my take on it - I got so attached to Kim as a character that I really wanted to make him proud of my version of Harry!) And in the end, his faith wasn't misplaced. Again, he can't change the world, and he's human and not a saint (much as Harry may think he is), but Kim choosing to be kind did make a difference, even if it was only to one man.
tl;dr This is going to sound unbearably pretentious, but if someone asked me if video games can be art, this is the game I'd point to and say "yes".

revan as the ghost
I had the odd experience of playing KOTOR 1 and having my Revan, then playing KOTOR 2 and discovering that I liked its Revan more than mine. Revan as Narrative Ghost/Controversial Historical Figure is far more interesting to me than Revan as main character.
Part of it is that 2 fleshes out Dark-Side pre-amnesia Revan into a more compelling character. All of the juicy hints about the deeper plan and purpose behind the Jedi Civil War, the past relationship with Kreia who is as preoccupied with her former student’s legacy as with her own, the probable betrayal of Revan’s own forces led by the Exile at Malachor V.
The motivation of preparing for the future great war against the True Sith is great because it doesn’t preclude the other motivations of vengeance, power-lust, and the love of warfare. Revan might have despised the atrocities of the Jedi Civil Wars as evils necessary to save the galaxy. Revan might have subconsciously latched onto the True Sith as an excuse to solve the problems with the Republic and Jedi Order using outright warfare because everything looked like a nail after the Mandalorian Wars. Revan might have just been acting with an eye to the long-term logistics of forcibly holding power in the Republic post-conquest and was never planning on fighting the True Sith Empire because Revan thought it was a real threat, but because another war would be politically convenient. Revan might have slid from one to another over time.
Maybe Revan always considered himself to be loyal to the Republic, even if the Republic didn’t always appreciate the form that loyalty took. Maybe Revan decided that democracy doesn’t work and the Republic would be better off under a competent autocrat. Maybe Revan decided that the structure of the Republic’s constituent governments – mostly monarchies, aristocracies, and corporate plutocracy – meant that it wasn’t a real democracy and believed a benevolent dictatorship could be used to build a foundation of true democracy. Maybe the future long-term structure of the Republic’s government wasn’t a major consideration, with Revan taking the pragmatic view that the best government for the Republic would be the one that enabled it to survive.
Supplying that backstory as a jigsaw of character dialogue was an excellent choice, especially since it also works well for the events of the first game. Brianna the Handmaiden believes Revan showed the desire of his heart when he killed Malak during the Battle of Rakata Prime; Kreia thinks she’s completely wrong about that.
All the characters have at least heard of Revan; the Exile, Kreia, T4-M4, Mandalore, HK-47, and the Jedi Masters knew Revan personally. And, beyond being a mere person, Revan represents things to people.
Kreia is invested in the idea that Revan was always driven by some vision of a greater good, that she never became primarily ruled by hatred or power-lust. Kreia has a low opinion of those she views as dominated by emotion and is unwilling to believe her prize student ever fell into that trap. She really wants every choice her old Padawan made to have been well-informed and well-considered, always feeding towards Revan’s larger goals rather than undermining them. (Yet, there are a couple of Revan’s actions, like killing Malak, that I feel Kreia would have preferred to blame on the Force, on the unfairness of the universe, rather than on Revan.)
It’s a major blind-spot in Kreia’s assessment of Revan. Cutting Malak’s jaw off but keeping him as her second-in-command – seemingly not expecting any negative effect on Malak’s loyalty – is unlikely to have been anything but a short-sighted emotional outburst on Revan’s part.
In contrast to Kreia’s narrative, I think that Revan’s disappearance in unknown space between the games was unplanned and unwilling. Revan apparently spent years attempting to build a massive logistical staging ground for a war with the True Sith; locating the Star Forge, invading to capture Republic infrastructure, brutally converting captured Jedi. Why, after previously engaging in such large-scale preparation, would Revan leave to fight the True Sith alone, without telling anyone but T3-M4? Why would Revan leave without warning Admiral Carth of the Republic Navy and battle-meditation master Bastila Shan about the threat?
More likely, I think, that Revan’s memories were returning in tatters and scraps. Revan became increasingly sure that there was something important she couldn’t remember; some vital secret that would explain so much, and spell disaster if not uncovered. Revan’s journey to unknown space began as a temporary trip retracing a past journey, searching for prompts to resurface those memories. Something went wrong.
Or maybe I’m wrong. Maybe Revan despaired of the state the Jedi, Revanchist Sith, and Galactic Republic were in after the Battle of Rakata Prime and the “end” of the Jedi Civil War; despaired of the mess she had apparently made trying to manipulate the Republic and Jedi into forms capable of standing up to the True Sith. Maybe Revan came to doubt his previous assessment that the True Sith Empire were planning to invade the Galactic Republic, since it had been more than a decade since the beginning of the Mandalorian Wars with still no sign of them, and left to do some quiet scouting without raising what might be a false alarm that triggered an avoidable conflict.
Another judicious choice of character trait with KOTOR 2’s Revan was – and even post-amnesia still continued to be – secretive. Revan kept the grand strategy for the Mandalorian Wars close to her chest; good for operation security, but also good for hiding your plan to purge your own forces. Even HK-47 and Kreia, who were close to the Revanchist Sith’s upper command structure, aren’t certain what Revan was trying to achieve because Revan didn’t tell them. When Revan vanishes between the games, it is seemingly without having told any of her companions save T3-M4 where or that it was to investigate the True Sith Empire. That repeated failure to share information provides another justification for the ambiguity.
That bled through when I replayed 1 and imagined a new Revan, a stranger even to himself.
How did you change so much? Could you change again?
You remember your mother’s face, remember her voice as she read to you from the histories she loved so much, but the records in the Jedi archives imply that’s impossible, that you were given to the Order too young. You remember racing your swoop bike across the fields of Dantooine as a teenager; as a teenager you were a Padawan studying in the Enclave there. How many of your memories are real? How much of you is real?
Is there a monster slumbering under your skin that might awake, unravelling the person you are now to take your place? Did the young Revan have all the Jedi Masters fooled, rotten from the very beginning? Might you eventually live your life haunted by nightmares of committing another person’s atrocities?
More frightening than the idea that you and the Revan lost to amnesia are different is the idea that you are the same; that your past choices won’t be beyond comprehension or justification. If you remember, will you understand why you started the war? If you remember, will you understand why you bombed Telos? If you remember, will you discover that you have been the person who could make those choices all along?

"Raging Butch Publisher: The Lesbian Tide Meanwhile, life on my own newspaper, the Lesbian Tide, was a study in lesbian contradiction and feminist paradox. How did a raging butch get to be publisher of the nation's premiere lesbian-feminist paper of the seventies? Like much of the turbulent seventies, it was a dialectic accident. I snuck in the back door.
In 1971, when DOB abbreviated my "communist" (Women against the War) presidency, they offered me the booby prize of remaining on the Board of Officers by holding the lowest position- newsletter editor. I accepted. I'd been editor of my high school paper; I knew the power of the press. From here, as Marx would say, it was just a hop, skip, and a job as this editor collided with herstory. I changed the name of my four-page mimeograph from the DOB Newsletter to the Lesbian Tide, because I could feel the tide of herstory changing. The whole world was.
Realizing its mistake, the DOB membership soon voted me and my communist tide out of the organization. Politically, I'd been gone for months already. But I was now free to invite my lesbian-feminist soul mates onto the staff.
The makes of the not-so-collective Tide Collective reflected the infra-chaos of our movement. In addition to my paradoxical self, there was an archetypical lesbian-come-lately (from heterosexuality) feminist femme, co-editor Sharon McDonald; our very own politically correct Vassar white girl, Shirl Buss (who later processed her own organization, White Women against White Women against White Women against Racism, to death); an old-gay femme, Barbara Gehrke, a former navy woman who thought women's liberation meant changing laws to make women free (poor dear!); and a bisexual, Cheri Lesh, who also must have crept in some window simply because she was a great writer. Lesh taught me that there were indeed a small percentage of human beings who did not find gender a factor in sexual attraction.
My ten-year indenture, 1970 to 1980, to the Tide and this outrageous family of women helped me survive lesbian-feminism. With our Vassar analysis editor, Buss, I completed my studies in lesbian-feminist language: androgynous was synonym for butch; cheating on your lover was called "having a nonmonogomous relationship"; and "role-playing" was "consciousness raising." Learning all these new things was called "networking" or "skill building" depending on the environment you were studying. And, of course, fighting for your identity, even unsuccessfully, was called "processing."
As the undercover butch publisher of the Lesbian Tide, I edited major features such as "Are Roles Really Dead?" and quoted myself as the anonymous "Marianne" (pretty femme, pretty clever) - defender of the now ancient heritage of butchdom. I survived through coups and controversy, not the least of which was whether the Lesbian Tide was a "lesbian-feminist" publication or a "feminist lesbian" publication.
Lesbians of the nineties might rightly wonder why their foremothers spent three years in this ridiculous semantic debate when they could have been proclaiming "Queer Power" on the "Donahue Show." What can I say? It seemed important at the time. I was a dyke long before I learned to spell feminism, so I was adamant that no Jennie-Come-Lately politic was going to give my lesbianism second billing as a descriptive adjective. i was not just a feminist who happened to be a lesbian. That would be as silly as calling myself a butch feminist. Somewhere in my gut I knew feminism had both saved me and shoved me back into the closet. Feminism rescued women, but it subverted lesbianism."
Butches, Lies, and Feminism" by Jeanne Cordova, The Persistent Desire, (edited by Joan Nestle) (1992)

this is the other one! Quaritch is dumb af AU:
Unfamiliar AU: Quaritch doesn’t realise that Spider is his son. Either spider wears a tinted mask that hides his face that he never takes off, or Quaritch is just really dumb.
At the start, for both possibilities, Quaritch mocks this strange human for acting feral and siding with the enemy. Spider says nothing, both shocked and also not wanting quaritch to recognise him.
During the fight, spider is still the only one that gets captured however he is injured as Quaritch didn’t take the time or care to not actively aim/protect him. This means immediately upon arriving at Bridgehead, spider is given medical care and is too tired to fight. Quaritch has no reason to see this strange monkey child so he isn’t present for the torture. (And for the mask idea, this it the only time he is without it, so quaritch never sees his face) they manage to pull a memory from him, it was where the Omatikaya lived before the return of humans. (Closer to the forest floor).
The rda sends the recoms there (for the mask: a member takes pity on spider and gives him a tinted mask), but obviously the Omatikaya is long gone. During this, Quaritch takes a shine to spider. Because they’re “not related” Quaritch doesn’t have to actively make himself indifferent to Spider. (He’s free to have a relationship with him as he doesn’t have to lie to himself)
They search for Sully, get the banshee’s and do all that other stuff. + For mask idea: teasing him about the mask while spider is sat there terrified, spider turns his back when eating etc. for the non mask idea, some of the recoms can feel something is off about spider. When Quaritch and Spider are stood side by side  they can’t help but see a resemblance. They don’t bring it up.
Ending (mask idea): when Lo’ak and neteyam save spider, in the movie he grabs a new mask. So he leaves his tinted mask behind for a clear one.
THEN, when Neytiri has spider under her knife Quaritch sees his sons face for the first time!!!
Ending (no mask): when Lo’ak, Kiri, Tuk and Tsireya are brought aboard the ship. Spider runs down to see them, and instead of sending him upstairs. Quaritch points a gun to both Lo’ak and Spider’s heads. (Even though he likes the kid, they bonded and whatnot, he didn’t want to kill him).
And through the comm, Jake says, “really? You’d shoot your own son?”.
Quaritch is CONFUSED,
what? He’s only ever met this random Na’vi boy twice! Jake’s son is not his kid!-
 .........oh
I love the thought you've put into each of these scenarios! And I love the idea that Quaritch does not know straight away that SPider is his son. When I first saw the movie I remember being suprised that Spider's identify was revealed to Quaritch at their first meeting! Like, when Quaritch asked for his name, Spider starts by just giving his nickname, then followed up with 'Socorro'. He didn't need to say that if he didn't want Quaritch to know who he was. Spider could obviously tell this avatar had to have come from Miles Quaritch somehow, so the only reasonable inference is that Spider knew this was a version of his father, and wanted him to know who he was.
The tinted mask idea has so many opportunities - maybe it's tinted to block out the higher-than-Earth-levels of UV or infra-red light that could damage a human's eyes if they were exposed to it throughout their life. (I know the science in that sentence doesn't work out but you get what I mean, something along those lines).
If Spider chose to withhold his last name, and Quaritch cannot see the family resemblance (which honestly fair enough), or Spider chooses to keep his face hidden, I think Quaritch would at first be totally cold, uncaring and distant. He wouldn't particularly care that Spider was being tortured, so it would be Ardmore that orders the recoms to take Spider with them once they pulled the memory from him. The inner turmoil that Spider would feel, knowing he has the power to reveal his true identity at any point, would be immense. I can see him coming so close multiple times, only to bite his tongue (or force his hands down from the mask).
Quaritch only realising Spider is his son when Neytiri has him under knifepoint? I'm here for it. The angst potential!! I would die to see Stephen Lang act that out 😭😭
Thank you so much for sharing your ideas! I hope you get round to writing them! 💞

Eccentric man: JaJa! If it isn't my favorite two! I've seen you have been looking at all zorts of veapons, but I zhink what I have here vill be a game changer!
Jaune: Given the incident with that pistol...I'm honestly not looking forward to it.
Eccentric man: I'm truly zorry about zhat, I did not mean to open old vounds. that is vhy vhat I have here in zhis here case has been thought of vith care!
Ruby: I hope so...
Eccentric man: I can zee your vorried but I promise you vhat I'm about to zhow you vill be vorth it!
Turning around, the man pulled out a long case much longer than another case he had previously, unlocking both sides he opened it and turned it around as both Ruby and Jaune looked in.
Ruby: A SNIPER RIFLE!?
Tumblr media
Jaune: a gauntlet?
Tumblr media
Eccentric man: Ja! Young lady vhat you are looking at is called zhe scavenger! Though some of my colleagues like to also refer to it as 'Hyena infra-dead' and yes, zhis veapon has a built-in variable/infra-red scope, but zhe specialty doesn't end their the ammo is regular 30-06 but vhen zhis veapon fire a zhot, zhe bullets explode as well as stick to surface, the blast radius is roughly 7-10 meters!
Jaune: I have never seen a sniper rifle that fires bullets that explode before. Have you Ruby?
Ruby: Honestly, no, and I'm a little miffed. I didn't think of something like that.
Jaune: But what about this gauntlet?
Eccentric man: Ah, Yah, zhis is zhe 'Gauntlet of Siegfried' something I've acquired in my numerous travels zhis gauntlet in its basic form acts as a high thrusting punch, a little similar to your zister shotgun gauntlets but it's true form comes from this...
The Eccentric Man turned around before taking something out from a bag. It was in a glass case, and it was roughly the size of Jaune's head.
He turned around and showed the two an egg.
Eccentric man: Zhis, here, believe it or not, is a Dragon Egg-
Ruby: I'm sorry I think I misheard you did you say
Ruby/Jaune: a DRAGON EGG!?
Eccentric man: Ja, our scientists vere able to restore dragons and use them for uh...purposes.
Jaune: I-Im sorry... but how are we to uh hatch it?
Ruby: Do we even have an incubator that big?
Jaune: won't it just grow?
Eccentric man: Oh ja! Zhe dragon vill probably grow very big, but as long as you loooove it und cherish it, I'm zure nothing bad will happen...zo vhen it hatches it vill be a little baby whelp and if your familiar with falconry your gauntlet has a perch for your little dragon to sit on, and vhen trained enough zhe dragon can act as your very own miniature flame thrower! Ahaha isn't zhat vunderba?
Eccentric man: zo vhat do you zhink, and exploding sniper rifle, vith your very own personal dragon?
Jaune: Huh... You know what? I'm actually kind of on board with this one.
Ruby: Really?
Jaune: Yeah, I mean, from what you've told me, 30-06 doesn't have a lot of kick to it, and I could be trained by the best sniper I know.
Ruby: (Blushes)
Jaune: And the gauntlet and egg sound like an interesting combo to add to my sword and shield. I'd just have to work in punches and learn how to train a dragon.
Eccentric Man: So ve have a deal?
Jaune: Unless you have something better, I would say yes. But there's also a lot to see around here, so we're gonna browse a bit more before saying for sure.
Eccentric Man: Wunderbar! I vill check mein vares to ensure zat nozing is missed. (Leaves)
Ruby: Wow, you, um, really like my sniping?
Jaune: Yeah! You're great at it, but that's not the only reason I got it.
Ruby: What do you mean?
Jaune: Ruby, we never mentioned Yang. How does he know you two are related?
Ruby: Oh... You're right!
Jaune: Plus, I don't want to know what he has planned for that dragon, but if it's one more innocent to save, then I say we take it. Also... a pet dragon.

If I had to explain how to grasp the Ignus Nilsen lore to a new DE player obviously I’d say you have to play the Communist political vision quest, I think you get quite a bit already from reading the infra-materialism book, you need certain skills like Encyclopedia to chime in for extra information (for instance it can tell you about his famous war crime, the Forest of Spears).
He, more so than Kras Mazov, is really the source of the wacky supernatural ideas that the quest explores. You have to have at least 30 communism points to get a cheeky little confirmation that there is something to the theory of “plasm” after all, although I think Nilsen himself didn’t elaborate as much on the details of plasm as his followers did, and you don’t have to take every claim at face value. It’s a reified metaphor, but Elysium is full of those.
The music that plays at the secret book club meeting is called “Ignus Nilsen Waltz”, which I think is neat.
If by this point the impression you get of him is of a weird nerd with a propensity for violence who may have had a gay thing with Mazov then that is also what I was feeling at the end of that quest. Perhaps you took note of Harry, self styled Kras Mazov impersonator, trying to egg Kim on into admitting they have a similar “special bond”. You may have also passed an Authority passive check that implies Harry sees “the most ancient power dynamic” in Steban and Ulixes, “one leader and one follower” (which is admittedly Authority’s bias, but it probably is meant to describe Kim and Harry too—technically Harry does outrank Kim and is the one leading the case).
If this sort of thing is catnip to you and you’re rolling around in it, then it would be a good next step to at least skim @revacholianpizzaagenda’s Sacred and Terrible Air chapter summaries. Then you will find out about possibly the craziest thing this man did (become an increasingly actual ghost after being a guy’s imaginary friend/Fury. it’s like if Harry’s Rhetoic was like yes I am the real ghost of Kras Mazov now). Also he also genuinely wanted to save the world from the Pale but it’s too late :(
So now that you know he can do that spooky shit you are ready to unleash the Communism Demon on your blorbos.
EDIT: And I suppose you’re wondering what he looked like if you want a mental image and I don’t know much but he is Vaasan so Scandinavian-ish, and Encyclopedia informs us that Vaasans are “beautiful and impossibly blond”. He probably also has some elements of his appearance in common with Kim and Ulixes (round spectacles makes sense) given that Harry and Steban have got a resemblance to Mazov. One might also suspect a dual resemblance to Engels and Trotsky since there are clearly parallels to both.

Mech Umbreon - Cave Rescue
My second Mech Pokemon! I originally thought of doing the Eeeveelutions as a Voltron sorta-thing, but instead had the idea of making them Search and Rescue bots. So here's UMB-197, a model meant for saving those stuck in deep caves and caverns. Equipped with infra-red vision to detect heat signatures and lights for guiding the lost out. Also comes with a drill tail for getting through heavy rock, and claws for more precise digging. The radar dish helps map out the cave walls where it's too dark, and slots away in the ear to protect the small components from low ceilings. Finally, a rope and winch are installed on the back leg to pull casualties out of deep holes. Let me know what Pokemon you might want to see a mech version of next! Probably going to do a non-eeveelution before I do another search and rescue bot, but if there's one in particular you want to see I'll throw it next on my list!
