Ooh so MC will have to "fight" A's new hoping-to-be-spouses to win A's hand? In a more serious note, is the the promise of marriage between the two royal families still in place (like did they agree to keep the engagement until/if MC came back, within a reasonable time frame)? Has anyone of the family and A, thought/accepted that MC was gone and not coming back during the years?

😂, that’d be amusing to see.

The promise is no longer in place, no. If it were other noble families wouldn’t even have the gumption to send in proposals due to the possibility of offending Aetheria or King Daemon himself. It was kept for a single year after the fact, but as more time wore on Daemon had to think pragmatically and do what’s best for his kingdom.

The late Queen Evelina believed, even on her death bed, that the MC would one day return and she told A— if on the childhood sweethearts route— to not give up hope as true love always found its way back.

King Daemon, on the other hand, believed you to be dead the longer it took to find you. He felt sympathy for Aetheria, of course, and let A grieve in their own way before he began pushing proposals their way once more; just because it happened doesn’t mean his child suddenly stopped being the heir to his country, and that his people no longer needed a strong leader to guide them.

Leia was too young to really have an opinion on it, but she hoped that some kind of answer would come— even if said answer was in the form of your body being discovered. At least then her best friend and sibling could grieve with the full knowledge of what they’re grieving for.

A has always been stuck in the middle. They hope, will always hope, for the best possible outcome, that you’re alive somewhere, but it’s become harder and harder to trust that hope as the years wore on and it fades into a mere ember at times… But said hope has never left them, even their darkest of hours.

In A Galaxy Far Far Away

I have been a massive fan of Star Wars since I was a child. The queer person in me loved Princess Leia and thought she was simply badass. They homo in me wanted to be Luke Skywalker, but to swept off my feet by the swashbuckling Han Solo. Then when Billy Dee Williams was brought in as Lando...yes please!

As the franchise grew and expanded, it had its ups and downs like all franchises do.

When Rey was introduced, I became a big fan of her character as well. I know those three films are polarizing to many in the fan bases. I liked them. They weren't great, but they do make for great lazy day viewing.

I also liked The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi. The rest however, I could not get into. Andor didn't grab my attention and The Book of Boba Fett was simply terrible.

I have not watched the animated series, so I can't comment on them.

Now we have The Acolyte. The one question I have for the show-runners and writers is, "did you have watch any of the franchise?"

The argument against fans' criticism is that they "haven't given it a chance". Halfway through a season's run, should pretty much have captured the audience and keep them coming back to watch.

This isn't a criticism of the characters, but of the writing and the story telling. Things like space fires and surviving a horrific crash without a scratch are just bad writing. Claiming The Force somehow being appropriated is ignorant to the lore of the franchise. Mainly because in order for something to be appropriated, it must first be owned or claimed by someone. Since The Force is all things, it's therefore for all beings. I won't comment on the acting because I don't know who to blame; the actors or the writers.

If the priority of this series is DEI, then I have to point to several series where diversity was just part of the story.

The re-imagined Battlestar Galactica did a good job of diversity. Side note: DO NOT REBOOT IT!

The Expanse was an incredibly well written and acted series with excellent social, political and ideological text and subtext.

And of course, Star Trek. The bastion of sc-fi DEI has always created diverse characters that were interwoven into the story.

With The Acolyte, it feels as though they tried so hard to fill the DEI quotient to their satisfaction, but with disregard to writing, storytelling and actual knowledge to Star Wars lore.

At the end of the day, if the story falls flat, so does the message.

• Finney - bisexual

Gwen - an aggressive straight Ally. She'll pop anyone in the mouth that disrespects Finney she already does but she'll do it twice as hard if it's cus his sexuality

Robin - homie kisser

Vance - another homie kisser (they're just like me fr)

Bruce - bisexual

Griffin - either unlabeled or straight. On one hand he seems the type to not care what your gender is he just likes you but on the other I don't see him liking boys so idk I'm still contemplating

Billy - straight Ally (I'm sorry but I don't see him liking dudes romanticly. Ik I'm crushing every Biffin shipper rn 💀)

• Finn's favorite color is blue

• Robin's favorite color is green

• Gwen's favorite color is pastel pink. She always tells Finney that Yes there's a difference between pastel pink and regular pink

• Vances favorite color is also blue but he likes more darker blues while finney likes lighter blues

• Billy's favorite color is red

• Griffins favorite color is orange

• Gwen did ballet when she was around 7 but stopped doing it when her mom died

• Vance is constantly getting into arguments with his teacher in one way or another. The only teacher that isn't on his ass is his English teacher which is his favorite. She's basically like a 2nd mother to him of course he'd never tell her that. He acts all tough in that class but the minute everyone leaves he somewhat dials it back when she tells Vance he did well today and he actually got a passing grade on one of his tests totally not projecting here

• Vance: "ur mom"

Finney: "my mom's dead"

Vance: "damn my fault 💀"

• Billys dogs name is Goldie

• when star wars was realesed Finney absolutely loved the movies and dragged Robin to see them with him

• speaking of Star wars one Halloween Finney & Gwen dressed as Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia

• Vances childhood dog was a bloodhound

• Speaking of Vance he had a pretty rough childhood. I heard that he's a Canon mamas boy so I'm using that as well. He grew up with an abusive and alcoholic father who'd constantly abused him and his mom. He'd always tried to intervene and protect his mom causing him to get hurt. Afterwards his mother would just comfort him as best she could and tell that he shouldn't involve himself when his parents argued. His mom got so fed up with it that she left Vance and his dad when he was 8. She didn't want to leave him but she was so emotionally and mentally drained she just left on impulse. Vance doesn't exactly hate his mom for it cus he knows it probably would've been worse for her if she stayed, but a part of him does resent her for it and wonders sometimes why she couldn't just take him with her.

• the choker he wears was actually his mom's. it's the only thing he had that she left so it has pretty sentimental value.

• Vance has a 6 year old sister named Tara. When he went missing she was basically the only one looking for him. She'd go on her scooter after school everyday around the neighborhood and stay up late watching the news to see if she could get any information. Tara was up when the news stated he was found dead and cried knowing she'd never see her brother again.

Anyways sorry for the sad Vance hcs back to our regular scheduled programming

• Tara's just as foul mouthed and intimidating as her brother. The minute she talks it throws people off bc a little girl calling someone "fuckhead" is definitely something they weren't expecting. kicks anyone in the balls if they mess with Vance or his pinball machine. Gwen absolutely loves her and hangs out with her alot. She's basically like another older sibling for her. Whenever Vance is playing pinball she's either outside playing ball next to the Grab n Go or sitting next to him let's pretend there's a chair next to the pinball machine lol drawing in a coloring book.

• Vance refers to his dad as old man

• Vance love life is interesting to say the least. He doesn't feel like he needs a relationship but wouldn't mind having one. Tho he's not gonna be romantic at all about it 💀 i mean he's not gonna be a dick to his s/o and he'd try to be romantic but he's not gonna call them pet names and be all flowery. a date with Vance is just watching him play pinball tbh

• Vance either is in a band or wants to start one. If he hasn't started one yet he'd never admit to his friends that he wants to make one

• Vances favorite holiday is Halloween so is Robins cus he loves horror sm every year he and his friends wear costumes to scare kids trick or treating

• Modern au: Finney & Gwen don't have cable tv so if they wanna watch shows from CN, nickelodeon etc they go to Robins house (Totally not projecting again) Finney's favorite show is the amazing world of gumball Robins is regular show. Gwen's favorite show is Craig of the creek and her favorite character is Kelsey. When it comes to non cable tv Finney & Gwens favorite show is Mr Rogers neighborhood

• Modern Au: Finney watches game/film theory. Robin watches it with him sometimes but only if it's horror movie/video games

• Vance can't ride a bike for shit. His mom tried teaching him before she left but he couldn't get his balance

• Robin is a roller skating/skating pro. He can do different tricks and flips and Finney always wonders how he does it without busting his ass. One time Robin tried teaching him to skate and ended up falling. Robin found it funny until he saw the giant gash on his hand

• Gwen uses pinkie promises. She's aggressive with them too. she'll be holding her Pinky to Finn "YOU PROMISE? 😠" and he'll say "yeah yeah I promise 😒"

• Modern Au: Gwen has a rainbow loom and makes a shit load of bracelets. Has whole box full of them. She gave a few to Finney and Robin

hurried feet sprint forward, arms and legs pumping through the corridor. he weaves his way through the crowds, in and out of other people, remembering to give apologies later if necessary. once the familiar regal glow that he always correlates to such a woman comes into view, he slows down slightly, resuming a normal pace as he walks closer. 

his breathing is slightly heavy, and there might even be a couple dots of perspiration, but! what? concealing eagerness has never been an easy thing for the pilot to do. 

“ princess leia! “ he calls out, finally arriving next to her, immediately matching pace. “ poison. party poison, i mean. i know times have been trying and all and i just wanted to offer my services. “ 

he wasn’t good at being a follower, but let’s be honest. it’d take a complete moron not to follow leia to the ends of the earth. it was leia!

You said you have acted before. Is there anything wrong with using your attraction in your work? I think SC use their attraction to each other in JC. We reap the benefits on screen.

Nothing wrong with it at all! Writers are accused of being scavengers, but actors are just as bad. Anything that grounds you in the scene and engages you with the other person is GOLD, whether it’s a prop, a gesture, or how you really feel about your partner.

It’s proven (I wish I could cite the specific scientific study) that if you act like you like someone, you will eventually start to like them. Basically, your behavior leads your emotions instead of the other way around. It’s no wonder that so many co-stars playing couples end up romantically involved.

An acting teacher in college said that the only way to prevent it from happening was to draw very strict boundaries between yourself and your co-star. He said he’d started to develop strong feelings for an actress who played his girlfriend, once. It killed him because he was engaged to another woman and didn’t want to destroy that relationship. His strategy was to be polite, but distant, never spending time with her outside of professional obligations, or discussing anything personal.

I’m sure there are hundreds of co-star affairs that have stayed quiet over the years. It took 30+ to learn that Han Solo and Princess Leia actually got it on. I really hope it doesn’t take 30+ years to get confirmation on SC.

Tokenism vs Diversity

    Tokenism is the name of the religion I founded at age 9 to con kids at a Chuck E. Cheese birthday party. 5 were injured, 2 killed, and I got a giant stuffed frog from the top shelf. However, much to my shock, when I went to archive the incident on wikipedia this morning, I found that someone else had already made the page—and not just that, it was about a completely different thing! Suffice to say I was livid. I knew I should’ve had it formally copyrighted, but the notary rejected my paperwork because it was written in crayon. Still curious, I decided to see what this new fangled tokenism was all about, and apparently it’s “the practice of making only a perfunctory or symbolic effort to be inclusive to members of minority groups, especially by recruiting a small number of people from underrepresented groups in order to give the appearance of racial or sexual equality within a workforce,” and I thought, hm, that’s pretty interesting, I could write a blog about that if I wrote about anything important. But then I realized if you swap out “workforce” for “airport fantasy novel” suddenly it’s far more in my wheelhouse.

    All right so first let’s figure out the difference between tokenism and diversity. It’s pretty simple really; it’s diversity when you like the thing and tokenism when you don’t like the thing. Unless your icon is, like, a sassy anime girl, in which they’re probably both for when you don’t like the thing. Okay, maybe it’s a little more complicated than that. While I have my doubts about the literary value of all the japanese titty games that steam keeps trying to get me to buy, none in their cast of lovely ladies are tokens.

    The real distinction is a little blurred, much like semi-repressed memories of ball-pit sacrifices, but the basic gist of it is something I feel like most people intuitively understand, even if they don’t realize. Like, if you’re describing a character and “the black one” is the first thing that comes to mind, she’s probably a token. I feel like along with this there’s this assumption that it has to do with how many minority groups you represent, which is wrong. There are three women in the main cast of the Big Bang theory, and despite having different personalities they somehow all still feel like “the girl one”. Conversely Amy Adams is the only woman in Arrival, but that’s of so little importance to the story that I had to double check the IMDb page to be certain. Essentially if any character seems defined by their “otherness”, and that’s not what the story is about, they’re probably a token.

    I feel like it’s important to note here that while tokenism should be avoided when possible, acknowledging tokenism in a work doesn’t make it inherently good or bad. That Princess Leia feels pretty token-y doesn’t make Star Wars any less of a classic, or even make her a bad character, nor does the fact that Rey doesn’t make the new trilogy better. Acknowledging flaws with things you like is healthy folks. A token Star Wars reference does mean that I can tag this post and reap the sweet sweet hype clicks though.

    So we kinda know what to look for now, but how do you avoid writing tokens? Well, as nebulous as the definition is, it’s really pretty simple, so let me give y’all a little writing life hack; literally nobody cares if your story meets an imaginary diversity quota. We ess jay dubya types want greater diversity in media as, like, a general rule. Nobody is demanding that you, Sam Chesterfield of Rice Lake Wisconsin, write a story about the plight of the Native Americans. If muscley white dudes punching orcs is what greases your pig, then by all means go whole slippery hog. The people you’re trying to appease will find your attempts patronizing, and the rest of your audience won’t care. If your desire for a diverse cast comes from a genuine place though, you’ll probably be fine, though if you’re still concerned I do have a few tips for avoiding giving the unintentional air of tokenism:

Avoiding cliche roles. Sure, a lot of stereotypes have some basis in reality, but having another solitary girl serving as the team mother figure will only please power tripping TV Tropes moderators. Let’s get some black doctors, lady scientists, asian weightlifters. It’s not about pandering, it’s about making your all of your characters unique and memorable.

Have more than one of a minority in your story, especially a very large group like women. I know I said kind of the opposite earlier, but my point was that it’s not an automatic fix to bad writing, it still helps. The original Scooby Doo was written and animated by Gorillas, but the presence of Velma takes the weight of representing an entire gender off the otherwise token-y Daphne. 

Bring it up. Don’t just give it half-heartedly lip service to the inequality, really pay it some mind. Have Irene lament the day to day struggles of life as a female human cannonball. Make me feel her plight.

On the other hand, just ignore it. If your character is compelling and interesting enough, no one will care. Cyborg from Teen Titans never felt like a token because he was just Cyborg. He was a member of the team, he was fun and likeable, he fit right in and you never questioned it. Cyborg from the new Justice League film felt like a token because he absolutely fucking was, so I suppose you’re kind of banking on your ability to write decent characters here.

    So there ya go, that’s diversity vs tokenism. Hopefully you learned something today. Since I’ve just written about diversity on the internet I’m gonna be kinda disappointed if I don’t get someone calling me a cuck in my inbox. Elarin is very hands on with his own proposals as he wishes to be well informed about the entire thing— so the MC wouldn’t really be playing matchmaker with him.
