backpacks: a guide to save your back but also pack

hey y’all. the first masterpost in my back 2 school series is all about backpacks— but more specifically how to pack them so your back does not suffer from all the stuff you pack. this has been requested by a couple of people. i personally feel the struggle of packing a backpack. with so many textbooks, it is easy to overpack. so here are some tips from a high schooler for high schoolers (and college students as well)

LEAVE AS MUCH AT HOME/IN YOUR DORM AS YOU CAN: for the past two years, i have devised a pretty solid method of limiting the stuff in my bag. the trick: leaving a lot at home. i use an accordion folder and use each file as a class. this folder carries all the lose papers i need for the day. it is super nice and condensed, too. i also take notes online for all classes that do not require graphing and drawing. this limits the number of notebooks i carry around. finally, i organize binders to keep at home/in your dorm. after every unit, i clean out my folder and place all my papers in a binder at home in case i need them. i can write a whole thing on my organizing method if y’all want ;)

CLEAN OUT YOUR BAG: please! please! please! please clean out your bag. i remember second semester walking around with all this unnecessary wait from papers i needed units ago. i usually spend about 30 minutes one weekend just organizing stuff in my binders and emptying them out.

ONLY BRING THE NECESSITIES: i know that sometimes, you are required to have a notebook and binder for every class, but if it turns out you are not using something, just stop bringing it. chances are your teachers won’t notice. the same goes for textbooks. PLEASE DON’T BRING A TEXTBOOK AROUND ALL DAY EVERY DAY. i know my teachers assign us reading at home, so i just keep my textbooks at home. if you know you want to accomplish work in that class during a free period you can usually get a textbook from the library or use an online version.

PACK WISELY: i am going to be honest, i too have a really bad back. so try to listen to your body and lighten your load using the tips above. it will really save you pain down the road ;)

* From what I read, scusami is best suited to use when sneezing or yawning. While scusi is used after bumping into someone, arriving late or making noise. According to the subject, I was also informed here that in fact: scusi and scusami belong to two different registers, the first being a formal one and the second an informal one. So you use them depending on how well acquainted you are with someone, friends/family/someone younger than you or your same age (scusami) vs stranger/person in a higher position than you (scusi).
