The air inside the Citadel apartment was crisp--frigid, even. Kaidan padded around the kitchen barefoot, wearing one of Shepard's too-small-for-him shirts and a pair of sweatpants, once in a while rubbing his arms to try to smooth out the gooseflesh there.

Shepard and he had planned on a staycation in their apartment while Kaidan was off from his duties, and so the fridge was well stocked. This wasn't exactly how they'd imagined it going, however.

"Alright Shepard," Kaidan called, walking up the stairs with several food items in his arms. "I've got marjan fruit, grape leaves, rye toast, and corn porridge. Any of that sound good?"

Shepard lay in their bed, looking bedraggled. Dark circles hung beneath his eyes, and a fine sheen of sweat made him look... sticky. The Ifter-Manatoit fever was not a good look on him.

Despite his husband listing off some of his favorite foods, Shepard stared blankly up at Kaidan, shaking his head. His throat dry, he rasped, "Sorry, I just don't think I'm hungry."

"Okay," Kaidan smiled, but there was a watchful caution in his eyes. "Well, I'll keep it all up here, just in case you decide you want something."

"I just..." Shepard cleared his throat, swallowing dryly, "Just want to sit with you, if that's alright."

Kaidan nodded warmly and set the food next to the bed. He fetched his book from the bedside table and slid into bed next to Shepard. His husband scooched over and laid his head on Kaidan's chest, hooking one leg over Kaidan's and holding him tight. Kaidan kept one arm behind Shepard's back, softly stroking up and down his spine, while he held is book in the other hand.

Shepard was asleep--or as good as asleep--in minutes: soft breath against Kaidan's chest. Kaidan could normally pass several hours like a sieve with the right book, but today he found his mind wandering.

It was like there was a radiator wrapped around him, cuddling up to one side. It wasn't till sweat dripped from his hair onto his shirt that Kaidan realized how much of Shepard's excess heat he'd been absorbing. He sweltered for another thirty minutes before gently shaking Shepard awake.

"Hmuh?"

"You're still burning up, Shepard," Kaidan placed his sweaty palm against Shepard's sweaty forehead as if to confirm. But when Shepard pulled away, the imprint of his body was left as a wet patch running down Kaidan's side, his sweats and t-shirt soaked. "I imagine its gotta be uncomfortable cuddling up like this."

"I already feel awful," Shepard declared, pitifully, "Worth feeling a little more awful to be... I mean... You are not awful. You are good. You are a good. You're worth it, you know?"

"Shepard, you're delirious," Kaidan intoned, but there was a bit of a smirk playing at the corner of his mouth. "I have an idea, I'll be right back, okay?"

Once he moved away from the bed, the air conditioning of the apartment once again had him shivering as he made his way into the master bathroom.

A few moments later, he came back and shook Shepard awake once more. "Here, come with me. Shoulda had this idea two days ago."

Shepard stumbled out of bed, Kaidan supporting him under a shoulder like the old soldier needed a patch up. In the bathroom, Shepard stared down into the hot tub with a questioning look.

"Do... I smell that bad?" Shepard rasped.

"Ha!" Kaidan exclaimed. "No comment. But no, let me help you in."

"Too hot," Shepard shook his head. "No hot tub. Please?"

"It's alright, it's not hot. Just... temperate. Not quite cold, but definitely not hot. Lean on me, there you go." Shepard stepped into the water with Kaidan help and sank into the water. The sound of relief that came out of his mouth as he sat and let the water lap up and over his shoulders was pure relief.

Kaidan quickly peeled off his own sweaty clothes and tossed them in the hamper before carefully stepping into the cool water.

"Now we can still hang out and be comfortable," Kaidan said, but he couldn't keep the shiver out of his voice as he took his seat next to Shepard and put an am around his husband's shoulders.

"You... cold?" Shepard said, dreamily. "Nooooo. Here." He wrapped his arms around Kaidan beneath the water and laid his--admittedly still damp head--on Kaidan's shoulder. Between the heat radiating off Shepard and the coolness of the water, Kaidan stopped shivering and stopped sweating. Shepard snoozed against his shoulder, and Kaidan let his head fall back against the tile.

Shepard needed rest. Shepard needed to cool off. And Shepard needed Kaidan. Kaidan smiled to himself that--at least this once--he was able to give Shepard exactly what he needed.

start me up redux, the one i'm using, is a full overhaul of fo4's main quest, not just an alternate start. instead of playing as one of shaun's parents, you can be a random vault dweller, or one of dozens of wastelander classes, like a raider or NCR ranger. if you pick the "random vault dweller" start - as i have - it positions you as a bystander who witnesses the kidnapping and feels compelled to investigate it. in the wastelander start, you hear a rumor of the kidnapping, then visit the vault and unravel the game's mystery from there.

having to RP as a parent was why i avoided playing fo4, and a few hours in, it's amazing how cleanly this mod excises that. it shuffles preexisting dialogue to remove references to a spouse or son, so your character is still voiced, but you can envision whatever backstory you want. seriously, the mod page says it tweaks over 800 lines! that's dedication. it even adds some pathos to codsworth - he mistakes you for his former owner, and the references to that missing family feel sympathetic, not glitchy.

7 years later, I picked it up for the first time a couple of months ago, stuck in a classic camera/voiceless protagonist mod and I'm having a good time. So yeah, right now is the best time to play FO4 imo, lol

yeah, it was interesting to see which features of fo4 were deal-killers for veteran fallout fans when it came out. i promise i don't mean to pick at old fandom discourse - the question of "how much do we define the protagonist?" is a huge dilemma in RPGs. truly open protagonists give the player endless creative freedom, but when you're trying to account for everything, they can become too blank a slate. a voice or a backstory make it easier to write a cohesive character, but the more you add, the more players like me will feel penned in. that friction happened with dragon age too: a lot of players [me included] felt that inquisition's choices railroaded you into playing a certain type of character.

i think it comes down to expectations. it bothered people less with mass effect, because shepard had a really clearly-defined role from the off. [me notwithstanding. it's why the voiced fo4 protag doesn't bug me: i'm already used to irina having the wrong accent.] i also think that "east coast fallout," as we used to call it, puts its player characters in a more explicitly heroic role. you can go off the rails in fo3 and fo4, but it feels like a big departure from the way the intro set you up. by contrast, in new vegas, you're literally Just Some Guy, and benny shooting you diverts your life without changing who you are. that's closer to my philosophy: i can define a character's present, but i'd rather not dictate everything about their past or future.

“Love From The Other Side” - (Magic the Gathering) Two planeswalkers find themselves on opposite sides of the Phyrexian invasion as they both do whatever it takes to make it back to each other and those they love.

“When others told us what to expect in Urborg, no one told us to expect hospitality.”

“From Sparks to Flame” - (Mass Effect)  Artemis Shepard never set out to become an Alliance hero, let alone the first human Spectre, but an unfeeling cycle has begun anew on Eden Prime. She has to get her team to not only trust her but also each other which is easier said than done. Part one of a story about how love and bonds (with the guns they find along the way) save the galaxy.

Later, when people asked Shepard how everything started, they were often disappointed with her answer.

“Beauty and the Furnace Beast” - (Magic the Gathering) A fairy tale inspired story about Ayara and Urabrask fall in love during the Phyrexian invasion of Eldraine.

“In all my years, I have never seen the sky this way,” Ayara said, looking at the odd voids in the sky.

“The One With The Lipstick Incident” - (Mass Effect) A gift written for @angstyastro​ featuring her Shepard, Isani. Thane is thankful for the continued blessings the Gods bestow on his family but that doesn’t mean he isn’t nervous or that things will go smoothly.  With Isani Shepard giving birth to twins, things were bound to get a little out of hand.

Thane would never fathom why the Gods chose to favor him as much as they had— even if this most recent blessing seemed to be a trial into itself.

“Things That Were And Never Will Be Again”- (Magic the Gathering) Ajani and Elspeth meet on Dominaria, not knowing they will soon be on opposite sides of the looming conflict about to beset the Multiverse.

Elspeth. She was here on Dominaria and alive.

“Same Song, Different Verse” - (Mass Effect) In a different universe, Council Spectre Garrus Vakarian is investigating Saren when he is shot down over Earth. He is found by Shepard and the two of them have to work together as other turians try to hunt him down as they try to rescue his informant, Tali.

Garrus could just hear his father’s voice berating him as he looked at the view of Vancouver.

“Reunion” - (Fallout 4) Nate didn’t die when he was shot by Kellogg. If only it was that simple. Now a ghoul, he’s come to accept his new life but a chance meeting at the Third Rail Bar changes everything as he comes face to face with who his wife is now.

“There’s your shares boys. Don’t spend it all in Goodneighbor, even you, ghoul.”

“In the End” - (Fallout 4) When Shaun decides that his mother should no longer be allowed to be influenced by the surface, he decides to keep her at the Institute with a synth copy of her husband, Nate, to keep her “comfortable”. As time goes on, Nate begins to realize just how cruel that was as the pieces fall into place for the beginning of the end.

He had been made as a replacement for her. It was simply a fact of his existence. Made in the image of her dead husband, Nate. He was a gift to her from their leader, Father, as she transitioned to her new life in the institute. 

“More Than a Name”- (Transformers: Prime, Shattered Glass) An old one I am still proud of so I am throwing it here instead of my 9th fic

When a mission goes wrong, Starscream is forced to explore some harsh truths about himself and his views on the Vehicons under his command.

“Love in the Age of Gods” - (Smite) I cant believe this one squeaks in. I wrote it for my future wife.

Arachne and Serqet have been seeing each other for awhile but Arachne doesn't dare hope that it will last. Despite expecting the worst, Arachne isn't ready when she sees the end draw near. Serqet sees the situation in completely different light.

Just read your ROTW fic. Absolutely loved it!

I have a question though: How did Wally and Shaun got out? Did they go through the same as the others?

Hi there! I’m glad you enjoyed it, even after all these years it makes me happy people are still reading it even if my interests have moved on :) that story was a huge project that I still cherish!

When it came to Wally and Shaun, it was a mix of I wasn’t sure how I wanted to fit them in because like a lot of the other minor characters they didn’t have a ton going on so it was hard to figure out where to put them! So I decided to give them a really important “later” role I felt fit their situation: reintegration of the others as guiding Shepards into the real world! They sounded like they were some of the first who might’ve left or gotten fired or something anyways due to their audio logs- at least in Wally’s case because he had the wedding card and such. I threw in Shaun with him because some people had the idea it was them that married haha.

They kind of “got out” in the beginning a long time ago in a sense where the machine spat them both out before they could get fully sucked into the simulation studio- Wally’s funny catch phrase I felt made it appropriate that he would be the escape artist who got out first on technicalities and took a friend with him. If I had to make up a real reason I guess his pure soul and determination made the machine unable to hold him I suppose, but I haven’t entirely considered the details to be quite honest haha. Just picture it this way: when everything went wrong, those two got spat out from the start partially on purpose part on accident and they spent their time figuring out how to be ink people in the real world while also trying to figure out where the others went!

Wally never gave up on trying despite Shaun being quite over it having been quite some time passed after they were freed, but hey Wally’s patience paid off :) hope that gives you something of an answer! It’s been some years since I wrote that story but again I thank you for reading it 💕 take care!

WEIRDLY SPECIFIC BUT HELPFUL CHARACTER BUILDING QUESTIONS

Oh man, Shepard was definitely a nerd. Like. Proper nerd. He still is, but he's always had a fascination with space. It resulted in him having this big ol' book collection of space-relates books. Biographies of astronauts. Scientific texts. Tapes of all things space media. He misses that a lot, since the whole nuclear war thing kinda destroyed... a lot of things, but especially books (apparently; there are so. many. ruined books).

If it weren't for the Raiders being the Raiders, this bastard would have LOVED the space section of Nuka World. I imagine if/when he liberates the park, he goes back and has a full on moment(tm) when he sees the space-themed power armor.

As for the second question, there's two scenarios where Shepard feels guilt the most:

He realizes he can't help a family/a child (let's just say Billy's whole questline was one of the most stressful for him because he was genuinely terrified that he wouldn't find Billy's parents).

He falls in love with someone else.

The former is because, even when he's in decent graces with Shaun, he just... he feels like he could have done more for him. For him and for Nora. Could he really have? No. But there's just that voice in his psyche that keeps telling him he could have. And, yes, it does hurt so much when he realizes Shaun is sick, dying, and that he refuses to go with him as the Institute collapses around him.

The latter is because he just... He was so dedicated to Nora. The weight of her death is suffocating to him. So when he does fall in love (be it with Preston, or with someone else), he feels like he's betraying her. Cheating. And he knows he isn't, it just takes him some time to shake those feelings. I think the romance dialog with Preston really shows what I'm talking about:

Preston: I mean, I know she's gone, but you still seem to be in love with your wife... I didn't think you were ready to move on.

Sole: I don't have to stop loving her to be able to love you, too.

Before I played ME3 when I was thinking this fic, I was considering Desmond/Joker actually. I think after Shaun and Rebecca, Desmond might find Joker's everything kinda comforting.

Karin Chakwas stepped out into the hallway and gently closed the bedroom door behind her. She’d been to the Shepard-Alenko apartment on the Citadel enough times: they were comfortable with her seeing herself out. She suspected today would have been a special case, regardless.

She found Shaun standing out in the living room, idly pecking at the low keys on the piano. Waiting for his dads.

“Well Shaun, I wondered if I would see you this visit!” The boy turned, and Karin saw the worry on his face. Something about the way his eyebrows knit together reminded her of the look of worry on Kaidan’s face. But he was developing into his own person, too, and Karin smiled inwardly to see this boy she’d known for 9 years look like such a little stranger. She stepped closer, put one hand softly on Shaun’s shoulder. “Are you alright?”

“And what am I supposed to be doing different, Kaidan!? I haven’t been slacking with any of the therapy and—you heard Dr. Chakwas—I’m no better than I was two years ago!”

The sound had followed her out from the downstairs guest room, where Shepard kept his workout equipment. Where Shepard always took his check-ups.

The boy looked up, eyes dry, but swallowing hard.

“How’s my dad?”

Karin searched his eyes for a moment, tried to give him the warmest stare she could before she answered his question. She sat down on the piano bench, her hand still on Shaun’s shoulder.

“He isn’t doing very well, today.”

“Today?”

“Well…” She looked back down the hallway. Kaidan’s voice was raised, but still an indistinct, low mumble on the other side of the wall. Shepard’s voice could be heard clearly though.

“Bullshit! I saw the chart. She said ‘less than a 13% improvement’! That’s nothing! That’s nothing for years and years of dealing and trying and—”

Karin patted the bench next to her, beckoned Shaun to sit. He remained standing.

“Your dad had a relapse—do you know what a relapse is?” Shaun shook his head. “When we say someone has had a relapse, we mean that an old problem we thought we’d taken care of is popping up again.”

“The Big Accident?”

Chakwas thought a moment. The Big Accident is how Shepard and Kaidan had chosen to talk to Shaun about it since it happened. According to Kaidan, the boy had never asked his fathers to explain the incident further. Kaidan and Shepard may have been blinded by relief at not having to recount the event again, but Karin could see the questions brimming in the boy’s mind. He was a sensitive kid, like his dads. Had figured out by this point what questions he was and wasn’t supposed to ask.

“It’s always this, though! And I wait, and I know the appointment’s coming and I worry, and I wait—but I keep up with the program and for what? What?! To get news like that, every time!”

“That ‘Big Accident,’” Karin continued, tilting her head to draw Shaun’s attention. “Yes. It’s not my place to tell you about that accident, but—”

“No! I can’t, Kaidan! I can’t keep doing this!”

Karin sighed.

“Let me tell you something about your father,” she said, speaking low so the boy had to lean in—concentrate on her instead. “Your father is a miracle. That he’s with us right now is nothing short of a medical miracle. And, if you ask me, nobody in the galaxy deserves it more. You know why your dads have so many friends?”

“You saved the galaxy together.” Shaun looked over his shoulder, down the hall, where Kaidan’s rumbling, raised voice was beginning to quiet.

“Yes, we did. Your father was the one who brought us all together, who kept us going when things were most grim. He’s kind, and he cares about people, and he’ll do anything in the universe to help a friend in need. When anyone else would have given up hope, your dad never did.”

Shaun’s eyes were wandering, but sheepishly looking back once in a while. He’d heard all this before, Karin figured. Plenty of people always trying to tell Shaun what stand-up soldiers his dads were.

“Why can’t you accept that I’m not getting any better?”

“Alright,” Karin raised her own voice, sat upright on the bench. Shaun turned his face up and Karin took the opportunity to hold his gaze. “Your dad winces once in a while, hm? Standing up, climbing those stairs?” Shaun nodded. “He should need a mobility exoskeleton to walk at all, after the ‘Big Accident.’ In my opinion I think he should still try one. But best not to nag him right now, hm?”

Shaun’s mouth attempted a smile, but that seemed to finally allow for his eyes to become glassy, his lashes wet. She squeezed his shoulder.

“Take it from his doctor, and his friend: your father has improved tremendously. Even after this latest relapse, he’s in far better condition than any of us imagined he could be when the… the ‘Big Accident’ happened.”

“—and how can I just keep asking you to put up with this? There’s no way I can make this fair to either of you.”

Shaun nodded, but a tear that had been trembling at the corner of his eye tumbled down. More followed. He stared at Karin mutely.

“So now you’re wondering ‘if things are so good, why’s he yelling’?”

Shaun shrugged.

“It’s because for all the aches and pains, what’s hurting him most today is grief. Have you heard that word?”

Shaun nodded. “It’s being really sad, like after someone dies.”

“Yes. We do reserve that word for funerals, don’t we? ‘Grief’ is the sadness of lost possibility. When we lose someone we love, we grieve because we can’t make new memories with that person. Do you understand?”

“My dad is grieving?” He struggled with the word, but nodded.

“Let’s just say he may be, and he’d have every right to.” She leaned her back against the piano, “A relapse is when your health has been recovering more and more, and then it gets bad again. Things you were able to do, now suddenly you can’t! Imagine how impossible things must look in that moment. It can feel like you lost the person you were.”

“—so tired! And I know you’re so tired, Kaidan! How can I ask you two—”

Karin scooted over as Shaun finally sat down, then continued.

“Grief takes time to quiet, and it takes love. But grief also can isolate us from people who want to give that love. Grief can make us feel that time will not help. Because it hurts so much, we behave as if grief were contagious—we hide it, thinking it will spare the people we care about.”

Shepard’s voice could still be heard as indistinguishable murmurs through the wall, and Kaidan’s voice had grown even softer.

“But I know your father’s going to be okay. Because he’s surrounded by so much love, and because he has all the time in the world. A part of him knows that, and your dad will help him find it. He won’t lose hope, and neither should you.”

No more shouting, no more noises from the bedroom. The husbands had either gone silent or were talking to one another in normal tones. Shaun didn’t say anything, but dragged his sleeve over his eyes. They sat there for another few minutes in silence, Karin looking at the fire, Shaun looking there too.

The door to the guest bedroom opened and Shepard stepped out, Kaidan’s hand on the small of his back, trailing behind.

“Dr. Chakwas,” Shepard cleared his throat, drew his posture up when he noticed her sitting there at the piano. “Glad you stuck around. Shaun, you keeping her company?”

“I’m sorry, we didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but we could hear some shouting through the wall.” Karin gave Shepard and Kaidan a sympathetic smile.

“Oh god, I’m sorry, kiddo.” Shepard rushed forward, and then carefully got to his knees to hug his son. “It wasn’t anything about you, it wasn’t anything you did, and it’s nothing you need to worry about, okay?”

“You’re hurting?” Shaun sniffed. Shepard looked up at Kaidan, who rested his hand on Shepard’s shoulder.

“Yeah. Today hurts extra bad, but that never means I’m not your dad. I’m always your dad and I’m always gonna love you.”

As Shepard continued to murmur reassurances to his son, Karin stood up at made her way towards the exit. Kaidan joined her by the door, he spoke in a low voice.

“Thank you so much for sitting with him, Karin.”

“Just told him Shepard would be alright. Told him he’s grieving.”

Kaidan looked over at his husband embracing his son.

“He’s grieving the kind of father he thinks he’s supposed to be, I think.” He was tired, he sighed. “Just a step at a time.”

“Love and time.” She leaned in for a final hug, then she took one last look at the tableau of father and son.

She couldn’t hear what Shepard was saying, but Shaun’s wet eyes were smiling up at her over his shoulder.
