So one of the amusing realizations I had watching Unhappy Campers is that while I love Helluva Boss as a whole and had a great time with this episode (great to finally see some Millie development and see how her and Moxxie deal with conflict), when it comes to deep-dive analysis and theory-crafting I’m pretty much only interested in talking about Loona and Octavia

And wouldn’t you know it, despite spending the whole episode napping in the I.M.P. boardroom and possibly doing some dry-erase graffiti, I still managed to find something that has some pretty interesting implications for our favorite Goth Wolf.

See, the big world-building development this episode is giving us our first look at the ‘Asmodean Crystals’ that were first alluded to in the season premiere, which allow travel between Hell and Earth and seem to be the standard way that demons are able to conduct business on Earth.

However, in addition to portaling to Earth, we learn in this episode that Asmodean Crystals also allow the demons wearing them to assume a human disguise. Definitely a useful ability, and also has some fun implications going forward; namely that if/when I.M.P. starts using an Asmoadean Crystal of their own (as hinted by Stolas’s research), we’ll probably get to see full-on human disguises/designs for Blitzo, Moxxie and Millie XD

However, what I find particularly intriguing about this reveal goes back to the first time we saw demons using human disguises; Spring Broken.

In hindsight, it’s pretty easy to guess that Verosika and her crew used one or more Asmoadean Crystals to get to Earth and back to Hell in this episode. What I’m curious about is whether the same is true of their disguises? Ergo, are Verosika, Vortex and the rest of her succubi/incubi crew able to assume human disguises on their own, or were those disguises simply created by the crystal(s) they were using? And if it’s the second option, then that has some VERY INTERESTING implications.

Because guess who has been shown taking a human disguise WITHOUT the use of an Asmoadean Crystal?

Yep. Loona.

Really, if it turns out that most demons have to use external means/devices to take on a human disguise, then Loona being able to disguise herself all on her own starts feeling VERY significant.

I mean, consider the fact that the only other demon we’ve seen specifically assume a human disguise all on their own is STOLAS. Heck, given how she doesn’t use one, it seems like not even Octavia can do it.

In hindsight, the way Loona gets a flashy transformation sequence alongside Stolas may have been a way of conveying that this is actually some pretty high-level shit Loona is pulling off.

As to where Loona may have picked up this ability? Well, reading between the lines we kind of have to assume that Loona must have taught herself how to use the Goetic Grimoire with little-to-no outside help (it’s hard to imagine Stolas giving her lessons) to the point where she knows how to use it better than even Octavia. So who’s to say she hasn’t picked up a few other tricks from that book as well...?

Basically, this is all giving yet more hints that Loona secretly has a serious talent for magic, and I think that could lead to some very FUN developments/twists down the line.

You think doctor fucks?

Yes, but only through either unexpected situations leading to it or with an outcome that isn't exactly what was intended:

Lucian, Blood Diamond: It was actually during a Hana-Barbera-esque chase sequence during a spell of time in which Doctor was separated from the Operator team, in which Doctor escapes the brainwashed Lucian through many doors in the same hallway while many unexpected cameos also appear from the doors. It gave Doctor precious time for Shalem to find them and hit Lucian over the head with a brick in a sock.

Theresa: It sucked ass because they are both bad at sex so they awkwardly chuckled about it and spent the rest of the night playing Mario Kart 64 instead (they had a great time!)

Platinum: Platinum sucks at sex and wanted training for her upcoming title match with Blemishine for the Bedroom Heavyweight Title, so she asked her bestie the Doctor. Unfortunately, they are also terrible at sex so it was just a bunch of Ed Edd and Eddy sounds. Blemishine (who fucks like a champ) then took on Platinum and nearly died from how bad she is.

SilverAsh: I'll keep it real with you, SilverAsh isn't bad at this, but he's way way too extravagant, pulling out ivory toys with inlaid sapphires, gilded gimp masks, extremely expensive Originium-byproduct wax extracted from the highest peak of Kjerag, like man sometimes you just want a hamburger quickie, not the filet mignon coitus and this guy just doesn't get that, plus he magically transforms into a needy pillow princess halfway through, very high maintenance.

Mlynar: The System of a Down of sex. Mid-doggy style, this guy stopped moaning in G major, started talking about the rising price of gas and how Kazimierz has been complicit in innumerable crimes against not only its people, but against others as well, then he kept moaning. Probably the best Doctor has had.

Gavial: Snu Snu with a skilled healer is one hell of a drug, but actually this all just started because they were watching caber toss videos together and Gavial was like "yo I could throw you like that EASILY" and Doc was like "BET" and you don't need me to tell you what happens between two people when they do caber toss together.

Skadi: Snu Snu with no healer nearby is NOT recommended. The closest call Doctor has had. Rhodes Island lost two entire factories and one dorm complex. The cost in LMD was in the millions.

Theresis: It sucked ass because they are both bad at sex so they awkwardly averted their eyes and spent the rest of the night playing Mario Kart 64 instead (they hated every second of it because Theresis can't even beat 50cc CPUs and he kept bitching about it)

Observation Log Series: Sayaka [III]

Today on: Visual metaphors for depression and the actual “magic of friendship”.

I am pretty sure someone else in the ages past had already covered this bit, so I suppose I will add this to the archives for my own documentation purpose. Or for just anyone who feels like reading it, really.

Sayaka’s magical girl transformation in this sequence is very interesting. There are a lot of jokes about how she’s yeeted everywhere by the Holy Quintet in her own transformation, so here are the notes:

The beginning of her transformation is shot in the sequence of a downward spiral. Sayaka falls through the hoops and into the ocean as her opening, a reference to her descent into madness (keep in mind: the sea as a metaphor for an inescapable expanse of darkness; the abyss) in the main show, as well as her deteriorating mental health. The spiral drawn to resemble piano keys (🎹) is also no coincidence, but they break apart when Sayaka plummets past them, much like music becoming discordant and incoherent.

Right after that, she gets thrown around respectively by her friends, each of whom gets her to the destination of being fully transformed. What is important to notice is that for the majority of this part, you cannot see Sayaka’s face, and she appears completely indifferent and motionless as others pass her around without hassle. You would think someone like Sayaka, who typically exhibits stubborn tendencies, would be resistant to being literally thrown around, but I feel that there are reasons for this:

• Sayaka being shown not as weightless, but rather as something heavy that makes an impact wherever she goes. She’s literally dead weight in the water despite her Witch being a mermaid. There is no attempt whatsoever we see from her where she tries to swim gracefully or float naturally in the sea. She just seems to be…there, being moved rather than performing her transformation by herself like all the other magical girls.

• The Holy Quintet are the essence of friendship that help Sayaka not necessarily out of her depression, but rather giving her a massive boost by flinging her to the next appropriate person. Given she is portrayed as dead weight, she doesn’t transform manually and do fancy dances, instead heavily reliant on the support of the crew to help her get changed. The sequence where she’s thrown onto the bed and lies there before being flung out again is very reminiscent of the tragedy that individuals struggling with mental health problems can barely get out of bed on their own at times, even to the point where it seems they might never leave said bed. Homura has to pick up Sayaka in a bag before tossing her to Kyoko, where it unfurls and it becomes her cape.

It is also interesting to note that the bed is surrounded by mirrors of all sizes and shapes that don’t reflect Sayaka at all, but rather the oceanic creatures and environment. Her self image is nonexistent and replaced by the sea. When she’s thrown to Kyoko, it is only then she is “stopped”, and we finally get to see her face. Her hair is long, unlike the appearance of her short hair that we are used to. Kyoko helps her with the last part of her transformation by putting on the gold hair pin.

Kyoko being the one to not throw Sayaka but rather casually stop said impact is likely symbolic of their relationship. The ocean is stopped by the unmovable rock.

• In the very last part, Sayaka appears standing on a platform that arises from the sea, and only then she seems fully refreshed and ready to go. Once again, instead of swirling out of the water or something, she needs something solid to stand on and raise her to the surface as she is incapable of doing so herself. Her entire transformation seems to highlight that others need to be on standby to support her, or else she will likely just dwindle and sink motionlessly to the bottom of the ocean. By the way she’s posed, it also seems to imply that she has complete trust in her friends, who were there at every turn to assist her transformation.

Something else I thought about as well is the irony that despite being mermaid coded in terms of her own Witch and backstory, Sayaka is almost always portrayed as a sinking vessel the moment she hits the water. A finless mermaid, yet frustratingly a mermaid that cannot even swim or float. I find that this interpretation would fit into the existing narrative that Sayaka and the Incubators view her as useless or inadequate. What good a mermaid who sinks in the sea? What good a magical girl who needs others to help her transform proper? Noting that Sayaka’s transformation always involves her emerging out of water seems to tell us that she has always pulled her weight out of the abyss by herself.

TLDR: It wouldn’t hurt to show that Sayaka requires support from everyone in order to do her best.

Symbolism and Meaning in Madoka's New Teaser

Madoka's transformation begins with golden tears flowing freely from her eyes. No doubt a reference to her drained up divinity. Nevertheless, an interesting way to showcase it and I'll explain why in a moment.

As everyone has already pointed out, her outfit is very much an adapted version of her concept movie design. Chain & lock aside however, something about it feels incomplete. Stuck somewhere between her old and new dress and seemingly can't decide witch way to go.

That makes sense as Madoka herself is stuck in a limbo between her old memories and the ones forged in Homura's Universe. The locket showcases her supressed side.

And of course, there's Kyuubey. All seeing and constantly watching.

My guess is that the Incubator, unsatisfied with the World at Homura's fingertips, will try to lure in the singular being capable of standing up to her: The Law of Cycles. Which also offers him another chance to gain control over its power.

What better way to attain his goal than to introduce Madoka to magic again?

The most interesting aspect of the entire sequence for me, however, is the static phone line that accompanies it in the end.

Betweem Homura's phone motif in the Trailer and Madoka's aforementioned tears, could this symbolise Madoka trying to reach out to Homura and grasping nothing?

Remember, she ended the call in the Trailer. There's no one listening on the other side anymore.

Diamonds, Toads, and Dark Magical Girls

According to Bill Ellis in "The Fairy-Telling Craft of Princess Tutu: Meta-Commentary and the Folkloresque," the fairy tale of Cinderella can be seen as one of the earliest examples of the transformation sequences/henshin seen in magical girl anime, particularly in how the title character is given items that help her achieve a goal, usually given to her by a magical being (her mother's spirit in a tree, a fairy godmother, etc.).

Thinking again about the connection between magical girls and fairy tales--even if they aren't as meta as Tutu, many magical girls do use imagery and ideas from European fairy tales (Sailor Moon alone has references to Hans Christian Andersen and Charles Perrault)--I wondered what other character types from the genre may have some precedent in fairy tales. Then I started thinking about the Dark Magical Girl character.

Not every magical girl story has a Dark Magical Girl, but they do crop up in a lot of works. To name a few, there's Fate Testarossa from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Homura Akemi from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Rue/Kraehe from Princess Tutu, and countless others that would be too numerous to name. In general they tend to be more cynical, darker counterparts to the main protagonists, who tend to come from relatively more stable environments. Whatever magic they possess also may be more sinister, at least initially.

Tying in somewhat to the story of Cinderella is the Aarne-Thompson-Uther Index fairy tale type "The Kind and Unkind Girls" (ATU 480). Many of the stories of this type involve a rivalry between two stepsisters, one being favored by the stepmother due to being the latter's biological daughter. The general idea in most versions of the tale is that both girls encounter a magical being at separate points in time. The kind girl helps the magical being in some way, at which point the magical being gives her a magical ability or magical presents. Meanwhile, the unkind girl refuses to help the magical being and is cursed in some fashion, or, worse, killed. The kind girl meanwhile usually ends up marrying a prince, or a similar character. One of the more popular versions of this story, "Diamonds and Toads," has the kind girl gain the ability to have a jewel or flower fall from her mouth when she speaks, while the unkind girl is cursed to have toads and snakes fall from hers. And while the kind girl does marry a prince, the unkind one is kicked out of her house and dies alone in the woods. (Insert something about Revolutionary Girl Utena's comment about how a girl who cannot become a princess is doomed to be a witch.)

Typically in these fairy tales, the unkind girl is never shown to be a real threat to the kind one; the ultimate threat is the stepmother, who uses her daughter as a means to an end. In contrast, Dark Magical Girls tend to have, well, magic that helps them attack the magical girl protagonist. In this regard, they're the Heavy in the plot, while the witch/mother-like figure/real enemy waits in the background (as is the case in a lot of magical girl shows--the Raven and Rue, Precia and Fate, Fine and Chris in Symphogear etc.). Sometimes the Dark Magical Girl will be a major threat, though--like the Princess of Disaster in Pretear (who is loosely-inspired by the Evil Queen in Snow White).

In The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales (1976), Bruno Bettelheim argues that the stepmother as a character is a way for children to process the negative traits of their own mothers, while still idealizing the good qualities of them. With that in mind, the unkind sister and the Dark Magical Girl can be viewed as a way of processing/externalizing the negative traits that a girl can have, being cruel, rebellious, and uncaring. They also embody their fears, too--the fear of being alone, rejected, and doomed to fail.

Of course, nowadays, Dark Magical Girls have a tendency to be redeemed and reconcile with/befriend the main magical girl, something the kind and unkind girls never seem to do in the fairy tales. Maybe it's just emblematic of society deciding that killing a girl off for being a little rude is a bit unfair. She's just a kid trying to find her place in the world, too, after all.

Has anyone made a proper execution of the concept of a teenage “boy” (egg) who gets chosen to be a magical girl and that’s how she comes to terms with her gender. It just feels like such an obvious and good concept what with the gender affirming transformation sequences and all other typical gender shenanigans. And what better reason for a magical girl to need to hide her identity than her non-magical form being a closeted trans girl.

Aoi Zaizen

The show hates her but she is a very good character. Trickstars and Marincesses are both hella cool decks.

Aoi’s parents died when she was around 6 and she was mostly raised by her older brother. She’s the 2nd best Duelist in the VRAINS at the start of the series and over the course of the first season goes from being rather shy and only putting on a happy facade to a determined Duelist willing to risk her life to save the world. She even puts a stop to a virus that’s leaving people in comas.

Aoi gets two more avatars (Blue Girl and Blue Maiden) and also obtains a semi-magic AI named Aqua as her partner.

She never lets her trauma keep her down and was a huge inspiration for me in high school!

AOI ZAIZEN IS THE BEST GIRL! She's gonna sweep this whole tournament and here's why:

Is the peak YGO Girl who Deserved Better from the writers

Just a normal everyday girl IRL who secretly turns into an ultra bubbly sweetheart idol who everyone absolutely loves when in the virtual world.

Her VRAINS persona is extremely popular, and none of her fans know that she's just Some Girl.

Plays an idol deck with Trickstars (toxic meta combo not included)

Is sheltered by her overprotective older step-brother/guardian, but very quickly stands up for herself and what she believes is right.

Mutual protection with said step-brother is the sweetest thing ever, I love Aoi and Akira moments so much!

She does NOT fall head over heels for the main protagonist, but they do share a nice conversation and handshake as they become friends IRL (one of the best VRAINS scenes, honestly)

Absolutely wrecks Soulburner for like 99% of their duel, and only loses because the writers don't understand how to move a plot along if Soulburner doesn't win as many duels as possible

Duels two seasonal antagonists, and completely destroys them both before losing thanks to an OP anime card that will never see the light of day, and a one-off card made specifically to counter her strategy and have her lose.

Her first virtual avatar, Blue Angel, is inspired by the main character from her favorite childhood book. That's adorable!

Her main summoning chants are all about hopes, dreams, and believing in yourself.

In the English dub, she says "I could so swipe left on you right now" implying that Tinder exists in the Yu-Gi-Oh universe.

Never got the Magical Girl transformation sequence she deserved because the writers apparently were not aware that Yu-Gi-Oh VRAINS is a Magical Girl show, despite the two main dudes getting that special treatment.

she is iconic, basically the unofficial mascot of the anime. She has so much merch and so much fanart she is THE girl ever

A thought but what if Jazz being the only Green Lantern that has a magical girl-esque transformation sequence when becoming her GL uniform. The other GL’s are both confused and curious as to why while Kyle’s too busy drawing the entire thing for his comic. She may or may not see the Crimson Green Lantern Dolls in stores within the month~ Danny is unsure whether too he horrified or jealous.

Jazz is positively humiliated by it but deep down she thinks it’s sick as hell. (Still slightly mad that Danny gets a glowing ring over the body transformation while she’s stuck with a Sailor Moon esque transformation sequence)

It’s actually a brilliant tactic to throw enemies off. You’d expect someone with a magic girl outfit transformation to be l a very bright and happy person and be bubbly “with the power of love I shall vanquish you” type of nonsense… yeah that’s not the case.

Enemies watch in awe and think to themselves “well this’ll be easy”. Right at the end of the glowing transformation they see a MASSIVE construct of whatever fenton weapon of choice wants to use in that situation and proceeds to kick their asses at blindingly fast speeds.

braven and superbia theory :]

so my discord server allowed me to be stupid on main and rant about bravern at 11:30pm my time, so here’s just.. everything copy and pasted LMAO

also, posting this before ep4 drops, i can’t wait to see if any of my ramblings made sense

theory under the cut, spoilers for bang brave bang bravern ep. 1-3 and ep. 4 preview

the theory is this: bravern and superbia are the same species, possibly related to the deathdrives

firstly, in episode 1 and episode 3 we see bravern with a mask thing covering his face. and when you look at superbia, it seems as though they have something similar

i wouldn’t say that part is superbia’s actual face, due to the purple highlights/crystal looking things on their body. bravern’s eyes are green, and he does have a green crystal or piece of glass on that gold part of his face

and also, bravern has a green background in his transformation sequences and when we first meet him.

there’s also a green trail left by him when he flies in the intro + uses his blade.

the show’s logo briefly flashes green in the op

and the green in bravern’s cockpit + the weird green liquid from ep3

and superbia’s eyes do flash purple in the op, so i’m willing to bet superbia wears a mask much like bravern when we first meet him

and now when you look at bravern and superbia, they do seem very much alike

plus, the opening hints at superbia being somewhat relevant at least, due to the fact that in most anime openings, the fight featured in it is at least somewhat relevant to the story

and also, bravern knows superbia

the “you never change” implies that bravern’s fought against superbia before, or known them in the past

plus, the opening and show kind of confirmed lulu pilots superbia

1. lulu and isami have very similar outfits when piloting

2. this scene in the opening. the character does resemble lulu and the necklace looks like it was made to resemble superbia

3. again, the weird liquid in the mechs’ cockpits

so in other words, bravern and superbia are definitely very similar

plus, we saw that bravern was losing to superbia without isami

without a pilot

and lulu magically appeared on a beach after superbia was defeated. and coincidentally, superbia was in the deep waters when we first see a hint of them.

and i just wanna point out that smith had no idea what lulu meant when she said her name, but bravern understood.

and he didn’t look too happy about that

and in the preview for episode 4, we see a few scenes of bravern essentially being in a shitty mood. kind of looks like he’s lashing out here?

and then at the end we see a scene of lulu looking confused, and we immediately cut to this?

so to just tldr the point that bravern and superbia are part of the same species:

1. they share similar traits and visuals in the show (mainly the colours i talked about)

2. they both have pilots

3. they have a history together (we see superbia scoffing at bravern a few times, and bravern’s quote: “you never change”)

4. bravern shows a clear dislike for superbia and isn’t all too happy about lulu

and now, the other thing: bravern and superbia are some advanced form of the deathdrives, or are related to them

so first off, when the deathdrives are defeated, they go kaboom and explode into this weird cube shaped stuff

and what happened to superbia after bravern and isami’s attack?

additionally, when battling superbia, bravern attacked them with a punch, which they stopped with a purple shield

and what else uses a purple shield?

yup. the deathdrives

so to just tldr this entire rant/rambling:

bravern and superbia show signs of being from the same species. they both needing a pilot to achieve their true strength, without them they’re not as strong.

the deathdrives also show similarities to them; that being the similar way they “die” (we’re not sure if superbia actually died in ep3, so i’m putting the word in these “ ”guys), similar abilities (barriers/shields, flight, weaponry?).

so basically, to put all of this short: bravern and superbia are some advanced form of the deathdrives, probably existing to be something like commanders in an army, seeing how superbia kind of teamed up with the deathdrives?

Magical girl y/n has a decent amount of powers so I’ll going over them as best I can

Transformation: as mentioned before she has the ability to transform and change her appearance at her will. This happens instantaneously to her in a separate dimension with a full transformation sequence while to others she just suddenly changed appearance lol

Weapon transfiguration: y/n as a magical girl has a similarly magical weapon that she can summon at will. This weapon along with being summoned can also change its form based on her need in battle. It can go from a baseball bat to a battle axe and a gun within the span of a few seconds and sparkles lol. Along with this her weapon can only hurt Shadowmites

Advanced agility and endurance: kinda what it says, but due to magic she has more endurance than any sleep deprived and malnourished child running off of McDonald’s, caffeine and pure spite should have

Hover: I like to think she can kinda hover a bit off the ground. Nothing too high but like a foot or two. Whilst this happens she leaves a trail of sparkles

Minor magic: y/n gets her magic and abilities from Rigel but as mentioned in a previous ask Rigels power is heavily depleted and limited due to being outside their original universe. Because of this magic use besides her normal magical girl abilities is extremely taxing and a typically a conjoined effort by both Rigel and y/n. Some minor magic allows them to imbue magic in things to increase their use like for instance with two-face and the burn cream y/n gave him. It’s imbued with some magic to make it more effect in helping numb the pain. Besides this and some simple spells like some minor healing neither y/n nor Rigel can do much

Increased strength: once again pretty straightforward but

Superpowers: Dot

Dot is the weapon wielder of the trio. With each weapon she has a different outfit, she makes them herself. It takes seconds for her to change into them, but that doesn't stop her from having minutes long magical girl transformation sequences.

She's mostly the archer of the team, very effective from distance. In case someone gets close, she is more than willing to use her mallet to destroy them.

• So you know the scene where some unknown magical girl is shooting a bow and arrow? And then afterwards she seems to go through some transformation sequence? There's a theory I saw on Tik Tok, and it's kind of interesting, where the unknown magical girl could potentially be Walpurgisnacht. Now, I know Walpurgisnacht is supposed to be a build up of magical girls ( I think that's cannon, correct me if I'm wrong ), but there has to be a starting point. An original girl that died and was turned into a witch, forming the structure for Walpurgisnacht. So what if this unknown girl is her?

• Possible Homura Tamura? The scene that shows multiple Homura's on a building could be referring to the spin off manga, ' Homura Tamura ', where there's basically a whole bunch of Homuras. So what if, all of the universes/timelines Homura has created clash together? That could be what this scene could be referring too and their all either enemies or they come together to try to save Madoka. Because in every timeline that is Homura's goal, meet Madoka again and save her.

• WHAT HAPPENED TO SAYAKA???!!!!??? So we learned that wishes can be altered, kind of? Like how are first Homura wishes to fight with Madoka but then goes back further in time to get to Madoka before her contract with Kyubey. So what if something similar happened to Sayaka and ugly violin boy? I'm thinking maybe in an alternate universe she makes a different wish, which causes her to not get the healing ability. But then that contradicts the thing that magical girls can heal fast. So, what if something happened to the soul gem? Cause that's been proven to cause extreme pain if mishandled. The series proves that Sayaka isn't responsible with the soul gem Kyubey gave her. But I'm not completely sure.

• Last but not least, will devil Homura make a reappearance? Because at the end of Rebellion it's implied she finally gets her 'happy ending'. But what happened to devil Homura ( apologies if this has already been explained somewhere else ). Will Homura have to make another huge sacrifice to try and get back that sense of a normal life for Madoka? I feel like that would be really cool depending on how it's done.

Why Miraculous LadyBug Is the Worst Thing To Happen To Magical Girl Genre in All Its History.

It would be easy to sit here and tell you all the logical reasons why Ladybug is a bad show. It has horrible pacing, it has low stakes, repetitive episodes, and a dialogue that is cringe worthy enough to get its own tiktok sound.

But saying that, would be beating a dead horse at this point. Everyone knows this show is a bunch of wasted potential, only made worse by a director who keeps thinking he created gold, when in fact he messed up in a lot of areas – particularly the fact that he’s a grown man who thinks he knows what little girls want.

I’m not here for that.

Particularly, because I can be quite forgiving to shows like this. I mean, they’re kids' shows! Meant for little girls, and I haven’t been one for a few years now. But I still enjoy them.

Why? Well, cause I’m a massive fan of Magical Girl animes. I love the glitter, the sparkles, the silly adventures with friends, and the transformation sequences! Even with all its flaws, I really like them. So, stories or shows that borrow from them, get a pass in all these things. 

I mean, I have fun re-watching WINX Club, I love Star Vs The Forces of Evil despite its flaws. Steven Universe holds a deep place in my heart and She-Ra is…She-Ra is in its very own league of how amazing it is.

So, no. Be it a very dumb show or a very smart one, I can have fun. It’s very rare when a show with, you know, glitter, girly stuff and animals CAN’T hold my attention.

But, well, MLB failed at that.

It’s just, not a good show.

I mean, it could be. But the age demographic would need to drop several, several age groups just to be barely watchable – and even then, I seriously doubt that it would be good for young girls to watch it. The lessons it teaches are concerning, to say the least.

And at this point, you may be thinking,

"Why do you care so much about this show? It’s dumb and you’ve acknowledged it treats its demographic as toddlers. Why do you care so much?"

Well, because I've been here... for a very, very long time.

Listen, I started watching Miraculous Ladybug, back when I was in high school. Maybe a bit old, but, hey, a lot of unique cartoons came out around that time. (Star Vs, Steven Universe, etc). So, I was hopeful. Really hopeful.

Mainly, because I was here before it EVEN premiered. I remember it. The original PV was 2D animated and it had this vague Princess Tutu vibes that JUST I couldn’t resist. It was clear as day that it borrowed a lot of its inspiration from magical girls from the 90's, probably even 80's.

The premise looked similar enough to Kaito Jeanne, and Kaito St. Tail for me to draw those conclusions.

It had a dynamic very similar to Princess Tutu and seemed like a mix of silly and dark like that one was.

To be honest, I could even see hints of Sugar Sugar Rune with Pierre and Felix.

Not to mention, the animation was beautiful.

I will never, never forget that scene with Chat looking at Ladybug starry-eyed under the Paris Moonlight. That was so beautiful, a genuine touch of romance that rang so similar to the Magical Girl animes I grew up with.

I was thrilled, I was excited. I wanted this show to succeed, before even the premier had dropped.

This is all to say -

I never came to this show with the intention for it to fail.

And I didn’t expect nor want it to be ground-breaking or a giant of the genre. I just hoped I could have a fun time.

I didn't want subversions, I didn't want it to be dark, or deep. All I wanted, was sparkles, fun and a good time.

So, when it first aired, I tried to stay positive. I tried to like it, even when it had all these massive red flags.

I’ve never been a big fan of 3D animation, and especially not how it’s used in Magical Girl animes. (We all know the disaster the first season of Sailor Moon Crystal was).

But I swallowed it down.

I was here since day 1. I was here when Stormy Weather premiered. I was here before many of you were, and

I swallowed it all down.

Because I really, really wanted this to be good.

But things should have been made clear, when they fucked up the one thing they shouldn't. The one thing that held this all together. The one thing that kept me here even as everything was burning to the ground, and I was too naive to realize it.

They fucked up the thing that started all this, to begin with.
