as a rat enthusiast i find the fact that all the rats in bg3 are dumbo rats very amusing. there aren't different breeds of rats its basically just wild rat (there's some nuance here but it doesn't matter for this post) or fancy (pet) rat. dumbo rats are just fancy rats with a mutation that makes their ears stick out like well, dumbo. that gene doesn't happen in the wild though. people will breed dumbo rats specifically because they're cute, as far as i know there aren't any health issues caused by the dumbo ears. for reference:
wild brown rat (standard ears):
fancy rat (dumbo ears):
bg3 rat:
like that's a dumbo rat!! you could try to argue like "well most of the rats you speak with are scared or stressed" but the placement of the ears is completely different than that of a standard rat. standard eared rats physically cannot do that with their ears. also, there are rats that aren't stressed in the game and they all have the same ears!
now the only possible wrench in my argument is that in their battle portrait thing the ears are like this:
which is kind of a weird mix between the two. they aren't high enough for standard ears but they also don't look like the typical dumbo ear. my defense is that not all dumbo ears are created equal! they still very much stick out more horizontally than vertically and are bigger than the standard rat ear. those are still dumbo rat ears.
so in conclusion: all the rats in baldur's gate and the surrounding areas are technically feral—not wild there's a difference—rats, originating from domesticated dumbo rats. thanks for coming to my ted talk
