Another for the trope mashup: Stranded due to inclement weather & anger born of worry. Damien Moreau & Shelly DeKiller.
This took way too long, and I probably didn't implement the tropes in an expected way, but at least I got 'em in there at all! I did have a lot of fun with this one. I'll probably move it to AO3 in a bit.
.
.
Damien leaned back in his chair, resting his right ankle on his left knee as he turned his wrist to check his watch. 7:00 PM exactly. He pursed his lips.
“More coffee, sir?”
“Yes, thank you.” As the waiter refilled his mug, he looked around the room. The cafe wasn’t very busy at this hour: only three other tables were occupied, and two of those were his people. The door had a small bell over it, so he would have heard anyone coming in; it seemed his appointment was running late. Damien didn’t appreciate that. He made it a personal policy to arrive between five and ten minutes early to all meetings, and expected similar punctuality from his business partners and employees. Given the military background many of them had, most didn’t need to be told, but his meeting today was with a different sort. Of course, there was a storm that might make travel more difficult, but a professional should have accounted for that ahead of time.
The minute hand on his watch ticked over to 7:01 at the precise moment his waiter stopped pouring and stood up fully. Damien glanced up to thank the man… then paused.
The waiter was tall, standing perfectly straight. He had a dishcloth resting over one bent arm, and a pot of coffee held in the other hand. He wore a simple uniform of an apron over dark slacks and a white shirt, and his facial hair gave off a vague ‘British butler’ impression. More interestingly, he had a monocle in his left eye and a neat line of stitching bisecting his face down the middle - an appearance that by all rights ought to have stood out from the beginning.
He smiled down at Damien, and gave a short bow.
“Excuse me a moment,” he said politely, before making his way back across the room behind the counter, where he put the coffee back and busied himself fetching a slice of cake from the display case.
Damien looked around the room one more time. None of his security detail seemed to have noticed the unusual character in their midst. Of course, Chapman was attending to other matters today, and waitstaff in general were more invisible, but… Eliot would have noticed him.
He sighed, and sat up to fold away his newspaper. When the waiter returned, Damien had cleared a space for the poundcake he’d brought, and nudged out the chair on the other side of the table.
“An interesting start to an interview,” he said as Shelly de Killer, the renowned assassin, sat down across from him. “Here I was, thinking you’d be late.”
De Killer didn’t return his easy smile, but his expression was professionally mild, as was his tone when he replied: “I apologize for the subterfuge, but I make it a policy to observe the situation before making myself known.”
“Well, I can’t fault caution,” Damien laughed. He made eye contact with the table behind de Killer, now all watching the man with startled and wary expressions, and gave them a quick shake of the head to stand down. They were much too late anyway, if he’d actually needed their assistance. Later, he’d have Chapman discipline the lot. For now, better to focus on the potential asset a man so capable of being overlooked might be. “You make very good coffee, by the way.”
He lifted his mug in a toast, before taking another sip. The assassin smiled blandly.
“Thank you. Please, enjoy some cake as well…”
“Don’t tell me you made this, too.” Damien couldn’t help a small laugh at the thought, reminded of a certain other hitter. Maybe there was something to be said for a correlation between similar skill levels in making food and ending lives. He took a bite, then amended the thought: hopefully not, if this perfectly average cake were anything to go by. He’d come here in search of quality work.
“Delicious,” he said anyway, brushing the crumbs away from his lips. “Now, to business.”
.
The time passed by quickly enough. Shelly de Killer had come highly recommended, and his professional attitude throughout the meeting seemed quite promising. Damien was somewhat skeptical of the entire concept of a line of assassins operating under the same name and passing their skills on to a chosen heir, but comic-book premise aside, de Killer did seem to know his craft.
He also made it a point to mention how much he valued trust between himself and his clients. Damien had found great utility in a more personal relationship, but studious professional courtesy was definitely a good start. The veiled threat of deadly repercussions should he be the one to betray their trust didn’t fly over his head - he’d heard of what happened to Engarde - but it didn’t particularly bother him either. He generally preferred to honor his agreements as well. The trick was to make your promises very, very carefully in the first place.
Before fifteen minutes had passed, he’d already gone ahead and hired de Killer for at least the job he’d approached him about today. Damien didn’t stop the discussion there, though; what he ultimately had in mind was a more permanent position, at least by a few years. It didn’t seem like his preferred hitter would be coming home for a while yet, and he really would rather not have to settle for a significantly lower caliber in the meantime.
As they discussed prices and preferred means of expiration for the target (through veiled metaphor, for the sake of the couple across the room), the steady rain picked up, falling heavier and heavier until it was nearly sheeting down. Several times the wind blew hard enough to shake the front door, settling the bell ringing. It was a little annoying, but nothing exactly to be concerned about. The more pressing issue, really, was de Killer’s reluctance to give up on his little gimmicks.
“As I said,” Damien smiled, “I have no need for calling cards. I promise, the people who you visit will either already know who sent you and why, or they don’t need to know.”
“I am dedicated to customer satisfaction,” de Killer replied, “but as a businessman I’m sure you’re familiar with the importance of advertising. Not to mention, as the face of the business, I will be the point of contact for any complaints. A benefit to you, if anything.”
Very polite, and very implacable.
Very annoying.
“I’m sure my HR department is better-staffed than yours,” Damien said, less amused by the moment. Quality work was one thing, but tractability was important too. “And as for advertising - ”
He was cut off by a bright flash of lightning, immediately followed by a loud boom of thunder, and the power going out moments later.
At the table across the room, one of the couple yelped, and Damien could hear several of his bodyguards getting to their feet: securing the room in case there was an attack, most likely. He didn’t think so, not when the streetlights were out as well and more thunder soon followed, but he still had these protocols in place for a reason.
Personally, he took the sudden darkness as an opportunity to collect himself. He’d gotten used to Eliot knowing what he wanted and adapting himself to fit - but even Eliot hadn’t been perfect in the beginning. De Killer had obviously worked alone for a long time, and most of his customers probably didn’t care about his methodology so much as his success. It made sense that he’d be resistant to change, at first. Perhaps the better option would be to simply leave now, and wait until they’d worked together a few times before making the offer for an exclusive contract. He could discuss terms - such as not advertising his identity or services to other people - then.
Damien took a final sip of his coffee and then stood. One of his bodyguards had produced a flashlight and was slowly shining it around the room.
The seat across from him was empty, and de Killer was nowhere to be seen.
He flinched, annoyed but begrudgingly impressed.
“Call the car,” he ordered his head of security, who nodded and took out his phone. As he was busy making the call, de Killer returned from the kitchen with a tray full of lit tea candles, which he passed out among the tables.
“I’m afraid we might have to cut our conversation short -” he started.
“Sir.” It was Blumenthal, phone held down against his chest. “There’s an issue. Apparently there’s been a flash flood warning, and it’s not safe to drive.”
It took a bit of work to keep his smile up, at that news. Damien took a moment, let the irritation build, and then shut it away for later.
“Actually, it seems like we’ll have plenty of time,” he told de Killer.
.
The assassin passed out free muffins and coffee to all the ‘patrons’ trapped inside his shop. The lights and power were still out, so the extra bit of warmth was appreciated and the couple promised to give him a generous tip. Damien’s security team seemed grateful as well, though Blumenthal at least kept a suspicious eye on the man who’d snuck past him twice already this afternoon.
The shop didn’t have a wireless radio, so with the power out their only news source was via phone. Damien left that to his bodyguards, instead focused on making the most of the time he’d been forced to spend here.
He still didn’t mention the possibility of hiring de Killer exclusively, not at first. Instead, he discussed his usual procedure, and how important certain protocols were to follow. On that topic, at least, he and de Killer were in complete agreement: discretion was essential to them both. Still, that stupid calling card remained a sticking point, and de Killer seemed increasingly distracted the more time went by.
“Look,” Damien finally said, sick of talking around the point. “I’m not like your usual clients. I know that, and you know that. Unless you work only for me, then I don’t want your name linked with my business at all. Consider it a special request, if you have to - I hear you have experience with those.”
The comment was admittedly a little pointed. He didn’t have to reference Engarde. But then again, that whole episode was proof of de Killer’s lack of good taste in clients, and it needed to be managed. Not to mention, the assassin’s attention was somewhere else again: he’d been gazing out the window and answering slowly and vaguely. At the very least, the barb snapped him back into focus.
“Damien Moreau.” De Killer snarled back, looking actually angry. “I am not your employee. You have no right to demand anything of me at all!”
“I’m looking to cultivate an ongoing relationship,” Damien said, through gritted teeth. “Imagine, if you would, what kinds of connections might be drawn from your… business cards being left at all of those locations. We just spoke about cleaning up after yourself for a reason.”
A stubborn, mulish look on his face, de Killer started to reply - then visibly cut himself off.
“Yes, I understand your reasoning,” he said, not nearly as smoothly as he’d been at the beginning, but at least with what sounded like an attempt at it. “But you need to understand mine. I don’t work for you at all yet. This is an interview for you, not for me. And even if I do decide to accept your request, it will only be the one. I work on an individual basis, with individuals and for individual jobs, and I am a professional who expects the respect I am due!”
Over the course of this speech, he grew louder and louder, to the point that he was garnering attention from around the room, and shoved himself to his feet on the last angry word.
Damien leaned back in his chair.
“Alright, then,” he said as easily as he could, and picked up his newspaper. Unfolding it, he asked, “What’s the news on the flood?”
“Still another hour or so, sir. He’ll be on his way as soon as it’s safe, unless you want to go earlier?”
“No, this is fine,” Damien said. He turned to the comics, and read them over, squinting a little in the candlelight. Nothing very funny, but at least it was Sunday. “Does anyone have a pencil?”
None of his bodyguards did, but one of the women from the couple came over to offer him one from her purse. Her eyes flitted back and forth between Damien and the barista still standing opposite him, obviously intrigued, but she was too intimidated or shy to actually ask what was going on. Damien grinned at her as he thanked her, joking about being worried that he’d be forced to attempt the crossword in pen. After a moment, she retreated back to her table, where she and her girlfriend began talking in low voices, no doubt gossiping about whatever they suspected was going on.
They would remember him. And not just him - de Killer had, by making such a spectacle of himself, completely negated all of the subtlety that Damien had initially admired about him. It was absolutely infuriating, and Damien deeply resented being forced to sit with him for even another minute.
He worked on his crossword.
It was almost ten minutes before de Killer sat back down. Damien was intensely aware of his position the entire time (in his opinion, few things were worse than an unpredictable hitter), but tried not to show it. He took a sip of his coffee and wrote in another word.
De Killer sat in silence for a while longer. Damien continued slowly solving his crossword, getting stuck on one clue he knew the answer to, but not in English.
“What’s the word for how a horse moves?” He asked eventually. “The bumpy jog, kas-”
“Trot,” de Killer offered, voice subdued. Damien made a slight noise of triumph in his throat when it fit perfectly into the open space.
“That’s it,” he said, but didn’t look up.
“Mr. Moreau, I must apologize for my outburst,” the assassin said next. He still sounded a little strained, but sincere enough. “I am… stressed, and took it out on you. It was unprofessional and you didn’t deserve that.”
For the first time in a long while, Damien looked directly at de Killer. He still sat very still, with perfect posture… but his hands were twisted together on the table, and he was frowning.
“What could possibly be so stressful?” Damien asked, after a moment.
“I…” The assassin cleared his throat. “I have a cat. Shoe is afraid of the rain, and I’m simply concerned for him in this weather. Being unable to return to him is,” he hesitated, “bothering me.”
“Ohh, a cat!” Damien set his pencil down and smiled widely, gesturing across the table. “I love cats! Tell me all about him.”
“I - I’m willing to discuss the calling card issue further,” de Killer offered, a little sheepishly.
“No, no,” Damien said. “You’ve made your feelings clear. Tell me about this Shoe.”
De Killer winced, and Damien felt his smile veer a touch nastier. Oh, excellent. It seemed the assassin understood perfectly well that he’d just cost himself quite a few jobs. Completely screwed himself out of a, frankly, very cushy position because of a damn cat.
Not that Damien disliked cats. He was telling the truth, actually: he loved them. They were probably his favorite animal. And he didn’t particularly care if his employees had pets or families or anything else. People could love who and what they wanted, of course.
But to let that interfere with a job?
Damien understood de Killer’s feelings perfectly. He seemed like a nice enough man, if a bit too stiff. But anyone who would allow himself to be provoked so easily, anyone whose reaction was to shout at him… no, he wouldn’t work with that sort of person. This entire meeting had turned out to be far more trouble than it was worth.
De Killer wouldn’t be useful to him. He was, in fact, veering dangerously close to being a liability, and only the thought of the witnesses across the room he’d have to deal with, and the way the assassin now seemed willing to demurely accept the unspoken dismissal, swayed Damien from his desire to deal with the liability right now. He might still have to, later; although if de Killer actually took confidentiality as seriously as he claimed, maybe that was better left alone. After all, no money had actually changed hands. Nothing illegal had happened here today, just a conversation.
They spent a tense half-hour politely chatting about cats, sharing anecdotes and chuckling over feline antics. Eventually, the call came through that the roads were safe, and Damien’s driver was on his way. The power was still out, so they readied themselves to leave by only the flickering tea-lights, and had to pay their bill in cash.
“Oh, America,” Damien remembered with a snap of his fingers, and added some money to the tip jar. De Killer looked surprised at the courtesy, despite the pleasant conversation they’d been sharing up to that point. Something flickered in his expression, finally resolving itself into a wry smile.
“I don’t suppose you’d like my card?” he asked.
Damien was startled into a short laugh.
“No,” he said, before leaving.
He leaned back in his seat as his driver headed back to the hotel, sighing heavily. It really was a shame. Not so much this meeting in particular, though obviously the way it had gone had been intensely irritating, but more that it had been necessary at all. And now he was probably going to have to promote Chapman, of all people. If only Eliot would just get over himself a little faster, this whole headache of a process wouldn’t be necessary.
“Hurry up,” he mumbled, bouncing his head back against his seat with his eyes shut. Then, louder: “I’d like room service to be ready when I get there. I’ll be turning in for the night, I’m exhausted.”
“Yes, sir.”
Damien thought of de Killer again and sighed once more. It really was a shame. He could have been fun to work with; as it stood, he might only become very annoying to kill.

17 and 27? :D
17. How about a friendship you like?
Gotta give it to the original bffs Nick and Maya.
Nick and Maya literally went through hell and back together in the OT, from the traumatic way they met literally over Mia's still warm corpse, to the numerous times Maya was accused of murder, to Edgeworth "dying", to the Shelly de Killer kidnapping, etc etc it's like a never ending list. Nick also took on Pearl as another member of the family cuz "well she was Maya's little cousin, so I guess she's my kid now!" and that was just that, they were a little family whenever they were together. The rapport they had, and the way they meshed so perfectly despite being so different, and (despite Pearl's insistence) how their relationship was never really pushed in a romantic way, it all really meant so much to me when I first played the games well over a decade ago. I did kind of like them as a ship way back when but now that I'm older I'm really appreciative of their friendship and am grateful it was written focused on that instead.
The Nick & Maya reunion was the best part of AA6 too, but she was barely even around as herself it was a complete ripoff. At least the DLC case was fun.
27. Favorite running gag?
I'm so into the way everyone screams, slams into/on shit, or throws shit when they get proven wrong, it's hilarious.
I do love the breakdown scenes too but honestly they've grown way too much at this point. I'm not sure how much bigger and louder they can get after the entire courtroom collapsing and bursting into flames around Strongheart. The best one ever was the Dahlia exorcism tho, hands down, everyone else wishes they could reach that.
From this AA ask list!

hey, I really appreciate the work you’re doing, thank you for that! excuse me if you’ve already translated this, but if not, would you mind looking into the aa investigations 2 relationship chart? it came up by just googling those terms but as far as I can tell, there’s no translation online yet :(
It’s published on the Ace Attorney Wiki. Here’s the full size picture. Since there are a lot of pieces, I’ll list them below the cut. And if someone wants to reorganize all this into a scanlation of the original image, hmu.

i forgot to respond earlier but YES if you feel up to ranking the cases you should! :D
i absolutely feel up to it! okay, let’s go! below, my rankings for all of the ace attorney cases i’ve played so far... please note that these are all subjective opinions and you may highly disagree, but this is how i feel :) please also note that this will contain me crushing hard on a couple of characters but i promise not to get over the top about it.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
The First Turnabout -- 2/10 I literally do not care about this one like, at all. I do like having Mia around, hence why it has 2 points instead of 0. But also it’s a Larry case and I really do not like Larry. Plus... everything else. I just don’t like it. (And Phoenix having passed the bar exam but not knowing what a cross-examination is, even if it’s just for tutorial purposes, drives me up the wall.)
Turnabout Sisters -- 6/10 AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA [sobs] This case hurts me. It hurts. Both because of the painful loss of sibling rights and because April May exists. Very different types of hurting, but all the same... She’s one of the reasons why this case gets points taken off of it. Another reason is that I’m just not huge on how it progresses; I’m never a fan of when Mia has to come in and be like ‘this is what you need to do!’ I like figuring it out myself, y’know? But also, heyyyyy, introduction to some characters that are very dear to my heart! Edgeworth time! Fantastic!
Turnabout Samurai -- 5/10 I like Will Powers a lot, and I would kill for Cody, and Penny makes me happy because she has the same name as me, and Dee Vasquez... Wow. Wow. She’s really something. But the plot is kind of boring and goes on for too long, Wendy Oldbag makes me want to defenestrate myself (especially when she talks to Edgeworth) and Sal Manella fills me with a murderous rage. So this case only gets a 5/10. It would probably get lower, except I really love Edgeworth realizing what’s going on and starting to help out, and the scene at the end... well. Well. I’m sure I don’t need to elaborate.
Turnabout Goodbyes -- 10/10 Excellent case. Perfect case. Could not think more highly of it. Yes my lifespan is decreased whenever I see Manfred von Karma but it’s okay. I love defending Edgeworth and I love the backstory even though I also hate it, and I love the actual realistic depictions of trauma, and I love cross-examining the parrot, and I love love LOVE the ending, of course, because getting justice has never felt so goddamn satisfying before. Yeah, I think this case is just my absolute favorite (so far).
Rise from the Ashes -- 9/10 This case hurts me deeply for a thousand different reasons. The sibling rights... The REMOVAL of sibling rights... (I cried. I actually cried.) Edgeworth suffering... It’s all so painful but it’s so well-written that it’s okay. Point taken off because the whole rotating evidence thing kind of annoyed me. ‘But isn’t that also a mechanic in the Investigations series?’ Yeah, but it’s okay when Investigations does it. Don’t ask me to elaborate.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice for All
The Lost Turnabout -- 3/10 This case only gets points for Maggey, and also Wellington’s cool ringtone. Oh, and the line about bananas. You know the one. Otherwise, it’s just kind of boring, though I do appreciate that they actually came up with an excuse as to why Phoenix suddenly needs everything explained to him again. Even if that excuse is a bit silly.
Reunion, and Turnabout -- 7/10 It’s not a favorite by any means, but this one is pretty good. Pearl is just baby. The whole Miney sisters thing is deeply upsetting to me, but in a way that’s kind of good. The Hotti Clinic makes me really fucking angry and creeped out, so points taken off for that. Also, Franziska has arrived, and oh boy am I glad to see her!
Turnabout Big Top -- -10000000000000000/10 NO NO NO NO NO. FUCK THIS CASE. I HATE IT SO FUCKING MUCH. I DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS ONE. The only good thing in it is how Franziska talks about Miles, because sibling rights are real. But the rest of it? The rest of it can burn.
Farewell, My Turnabout -- 9/10 This is a really good case! I LOVE the twist, I didn’t expect it at all, and it was so cool. I also really like Adrian. Shelly de Killer is pretty cool too. And of course, Edgeworth is back! Hallelujah! Franziska getting shot though... :( And having to go to that damn clinic... :((( Oh and also I love Shoe with every fiber of my being.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations
Turnabout Memories -- 7/10 Ah, another flashback case, and one that doesn’t absolutely destroy me emotionally! Mia is here! Phoenix Wright as a sick college student with no common sense is here! Dahlia Hawthorne is here! It’s quite a collection of interesting individuals, and on top of that, it’s just a cool case! Even if lovestruck Phoenix makes me feel like hitting someone... Sort of like what it does to Mia...
The Stolen Turnabout -- 6/10 The case itself isn’t that good, to be honest. But I would kill for Ron and Desiree DeLite. They’re so sweet, and Ron is so funny... On the other hand, though, Luke Atmey can go Zvarri himself. I hated him from the very moment he first appeared. What an annoying, fraudulent ass. Also, Godot was there, and I didn’t like him, either, even though I hadn’t yet seen quite just how bad he can get. It was really nice to see Adrian living her best life, though!
Recipe for Turnabout -- 2/10 I really didn’t like this one... I don’t want to talk about it... I did like Lisa Basil though. Too bad she wasn’t much of a character. Oh, and Viola too. And seeing Maggey again was nice. But those were the only good points in an otherwise horrible case.
Turnabout Beginnings -- 7/10 The case is pretty high quality, but it tormented me. Seeing Edgeworth in that coat... with those sprites, just like von Karma’s... And that one line... I hated every minute of it. It hurt. The only way it could’ve been worse was if von Karma himself had been there, but that gets saved for Investigations. Mia being there again was fun, though. And Dahlia... Wow. Lots going on there. That ending was... a lot. Terry was a creep and I didn’t like him, but watching that... Yeah. Yeah. And Diego did not endear himself to me in the slightest.
Bridge to the Turnabout -- 8/10 Too much Godot. Otherwise, this was a really great case. Playing as Edgeworth was so much fun, and Franziska being there too was incredible, and the whole thing tying up all the loose ends was just... so cool. Admittedly, the case itself made me very sad, but... it was so good. So good. I wanted to kill Godot partway through, though. No one talks to Franziska that way. No one. Plus, his whole stupid attitude about Mia... Yeah, I hated his guts, that’s for sure. It also had the scene that I hate (Phoenix needs to fucking learn what PTSD is or I swear to god) but otherwise, very good case.
Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth
Turnabout Visitor -- 5/10 HELLOOOOOO I was so excited to finally play these games that the whole case is a bit of a blur, but I do remember not really finding it that interesting outside of the whole rush of ‘FUCK YEAH I’M PLAYING INVESTIGATIONS’. Jacques annoyed me. But it’s Investigations. Investigations is cool.
Turnabout Airlines -- 7/10 Okay, first of all, Edgeworth hiding Steel Samurai stuff in a law book is genuinely just the funniest thing ever. But this case was pretty fun! I love that Franziska’s working with Interpol now, good for her! The characters were pretty cool (I really liked Cammy) and I thought a lot of it was pretty funny, too.
The Kidnapped Turnabout -- 6/10 The only reason this gets 6 points is because it introduced Kay Faraday, who is my chaos child that I love dearly, and also Shi-Long Lang, who I have a very complicated relationship with. It switches from love to hate frequently. It also introduced their totally epic theme songs, one of which is now my morning alarm. Otherwise, I really don’t like it that much. The case goes on for too long, and a lot of the characters are pretty annoying. I really hate Lance. I feel bad for Lauren, though. Ernest... Ugh. Ugh. The man makes me want to break things. Every time he mentions von Karma, he inevitably says something that makes my blood boil. And it brings back Wendy Oldbag, which is always bad news, and she was so fucking creepy, and... yeah. I enjoyed seeing Ema again, though! She seemed to be living her best life :)
Turnabout Reminiscence -- 9/10 This case had too much von Karma in it, and the fact that he went and called Edgeworth worthless right to his face made me so angry and upset... But! It is still a very good case! I really like Detective Badd, and Calisto... Calisto is very pretty and fun, but... yeah. Also! Baby Kay! Baby Kay is everything! And the sibling rights, they were everywhere! The case was just full of them! I love Miles and Franziska bickering like regular siblings. I love the scene with the Swiss rolls. I love Franziska getting between him and her dad. Sibling rights are so real.
Turnabout Ablaze -- 6/10 This case was pretty eventful. Not a favorite by any means, but still good. I thought it was a little too long, though, and the ending just really felt like it was dragging out too much. It got to the point that I wasn’t even fired up anymore, I was just kind of trying to get it all over with. Also, whether he meant it or not, Lang accusing Franziska of murder made me mad. But some of the twists were cool, even if I figured out most of them ahead of time... Also, Edgeworth getting really mad about Larry playing the Steel Samurai was hilarious, in a mean way. I felt a little bit bad for laughing.
Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth: Prosecutor’s Path
Turnabout Target -- 4/10 This one was kinda boring, to be honest. I liked seeing Shelly de Killer again, though, with his matching ice cream cone. And I liked Nicole. (I bet I know who her first mentor was...)
The Imprisoned Turnabout -- 5/10 This one also kinda bored me, unfortunately. Raymond ticked me off from basically the moment he walked onscreen, because sure, let’s blame Edgeworth for [checks notes] ah yes, being manipulated by Manfred von Karma since he was nine. Let’s do that. Nothing wrong with that at all. /dripping sarcasm Sebastian also ticked me off at first, but I’m warming up to him. Also, I was in love at first sight with Justine Courtney. [heart eyes] I am not embarrassed in the slightest to admit to it. She is amazing. Simon is really funny and I think it would’ve been hilarious if he was actually evil, but he was innocent, so... My blood ran cold when I found out the Berry Big Circus was involved, but thank god, it was only Regina. No Franziska yet. I’m really hoping Franziska will show up.
The Inherited Turnabout -- 8/10 I haven’t finished this one yet, but so far, I’ve been enjoying it, even if it torments me with sadness and anger. Once again, von Karma shortens my lifespan, but Gregory Edgeworth lengthens it. (I think it’s really funny that they got ProZD to voice him.) Raymond... I still don’t like Raymond. Though his eating the paper is funny. Also! Also! Katherine Hall! This game introduced two women in a row that I have absolutely fallen for, and I have zero complaints about this. They are incredible. Sebastian is really funny in this one and like I said I am really warming up to him. Yeah. That’s all I really have to say so far. Still no sign of Franziska...
I’m definitely excited to see where the other cases in this game will take me, and after that it will be time for Apollo Justice! I am looking forward to finally meeting the famous Klavier Gavin... But I am not at all looking forward to meeting Kristoph... Oh, well. I’ll live. Probably.
Thank you for reading all of this, haha! I have a lot of thoughts... Many thoughts head full (of Ace Attorney).

answers aa themed questions nobody asked because i’m cool and sexy
also i havent played the 5th or 6th games so
YOUR FAVOURITE…? 1. Favourite Ace Attorney game? honestly? phoenix wright ace attorney! everything’s fresh, there aren’t many weak characters, and the plot is remarkable (especially the fifth case). the whole trilogy is really good as one unit though 2. Favourite case? 1-4, 1-5, 2-4, and 3-5 are tied lol, i can’t make a decision to save my life. 2-1 is really really funny tho 3. Favourite defendant? as a defendant, lana skye. as a person, edgeworth 4. Favourite prosecutor? as a prosecutor, franziska von karma. as a person, edgeworth 5. Favourite ship? wrightworth obviously... ive probably put more thought into them over the last 3 years than any other ship 6. Favourite victim? probably mia fey or gregory edgeworth... but for non-relevant victims, neil marshall :( 7. Favourite murderer? shelly de killer, i LOVE that guy. but dee vasquez was very cool as well 8. Favourite assistant? maya fey!!!!!!!!!! but i like kay faraday a lot too (im so sorry ema) 9. Favourite witness? adrian andrews... or maybe iris? i mean i didn’t like iris but god what a person 10. Favourite quote? “It doesn't matter how many underhanded tricks a person uses... The truth will always find a way to make itself known. The only thing we can do is to fight with the knowledge we hold and everything we have. Erasing the paradoxes one by one... It's never easy... We claw and scratch for every inch. But we will always eventually reach that one single truth. This I promise you.” - Miles Edgeworth i made this one of my senior quotes :]
YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE…? 11. Least favourite Ace Attorney game? uh fucking apollo justice. literally what the hell was that 12. Least favourite case? turnabout visitor wasn’t very strong? i guess it’s fine as an intro, but it’s also wonky with the timeline of aai 13. Least favourite defendant? max galactica. he’s better in the anime though 14. Least favourite prosecutor? manfred von karma, obviously. i like every other prosecutor (who i know of) though, even winston payne is pretty funny in hindsight 15. Least favourite ship? “miles edgeworth/female oc”. there are a lot of bad ships though, mostly involving phoenix & his assistants. dont do that please 16. Least favourite victim? zak gramarye for kickstarting that shitty, shitty game 17. Least favourite murderer? again mvk... but also fucking frank sahwit LMAO 18. Least favourite assistant? i guess trucy 19. Least favourite witness? fuck everyone from turnabout big top unless it was the anime episode 20. Least favourite memory of Ace Attorney? repeatedly trying and failing to download the emulator for aai2 hbjsjhdb i eventually got it but someone had to send me the download fully pre-patched and i felt kinda useless DO YOU PREFER…? 21. Phoenix Wright or Apollo Justice? phoenix wright. fuck that “GOTCHA!” mechanic jesus christ 22. Maya Fey or Trucy Wright? maya fey. nothing personal against trucy but i just dont like aj hbjsdjhsdb also maya is really sweet and fun and she has the best sprites. she seems like she’d be a good friend, it’s too bad that she doesn’t have the time for them as a spirit medium and all :( if maya ema and kay got to hang out together itd be wild 23. Investigations or trials? trials are easier in my opinion because investigations have several things you could be doing without such a linear style, so if you miss something, you won’t really know until you wander around forever 24. College Phoenix or Hobo Phoenix? college feenie!!!!! he’s like trilogy feenie but more emotional and less witty. i like to pretend that hobo phoenix doesnt exist 25. Klavier Gavin or Kristoph Gavin? who would say kristoph 26. Ace Attorney or Ace Attorney Investigations? ace attorney but only because phoenix is in it lmao. im actually rewatching a playthrough of aai now, and playing aai2 at the same time, so while it is on the mind, i feel like the cases characters and mechanics - while loved - don’t hold up to the OGs 27. Apollo’s perceive, Phoenix’s magatama, or Athena’s Mood Matrix? i actually kinda like the mood matrix more than anything because it has a really good UI and the magatama is kinda grating. but FUCK the gotcha mechanic it is SO FUCKING STUPID and IMPOSSIBLE TO USE.  where is logic chess 28. Ace Attorney trilogy or Apollo Justice and Dual Destinies? you already know my answer to this one 29. 3D models or sprites? i do like the 3d models a lot but i like the original sprites more! imo original pixel sprites > 3D models > HD sprites. mostly bc the hd sprites are garbage (see here, here, and here) 30. Ema Skye as she is in Rise from the Ashes or Ema Skye as she is in Apollo Justice? rfta !!!!!! shes actually really nice as an assistant, esp considering the fact that we actually see her interact with her sister, which is something maya didn’t have very often. also her random appearance in aai was well appreciated by me
MISCELLANEOUS 31. Did you like what they did to Phoenix in Apollo Justice?
NO I AM SO FUCKING MAD WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT TO HIM ISN’T HE A LAWYER WHY COULD HE NOT JUST DEFEND HIMSELF FROM THE FACT THAT HE “FORGED EVIDENCE” IT WASN’T EVEN HIS IN THE FIRST PLACE SOMEBODY ELSE FORGED IT AND HE DIDN’T KNOW THAT, MANFRED VON KARMA GOT AWAY WITH A FUCKLOAD OF NONSENSE AND SO DOES EVERY OTHER LAWYER SO WHY IS IT THAT PHOENIX CAN SURVIVE EATING A POISONED GLASS NECKLACE AND GETTING HIT OVER THE HEAD WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND FALLING FROM A BURNING BRIDGE INTO A RUSHING RAVINE AND BEING HIT BY A CAR BUT HE CAN’T FUCKING DEFEND HIMSELF LIKE HE DOES IN EVERY OTHER CASE BECAUSE THAT’S THE POINT OF THE GAME AND ALSO HIS ENTIRE CHARACTER
32. Your opinion on Dai Gyakuten Saiban? haven’t played it! it looks pretty cool though
33. Do you think Dai Gyakuten Saiban and/or Miles Edgeworth Investigations 2 will get localised to the West? doubt it, since the creators have said that it won’t be. but the fan translations are pretty good, so i think it’s okay
34. Do you think Miles Edgeworth should get another Investigation-game or do you think another character deserves a spin-off? i mean he already has two, so i guess he doesn’t need another? like i love edgeworth but he’s not as fun without phoenix around. ngl i would play a franziska game. or a maya game, or any spinoff revolving around a side character. hell i’d play hotti game if it meant it took place in the trilogy era
35. Opinion on the soundtrack of the Ace Attorney-franchise? REALLY good. really really good. i love how each game of the trilogy has different composers but each track has the same theme and feel!!!
36. Do you like where the franchise is heading or did you prefer the atmosphere in the original trilogy? seriously absolutely completely prefer the trilogy. i’m sorry but the rush of youth and trust is way, way more enjoyable than whatever “i’m 35 and therefore middle aged” nonsense is happening in the 2020s
37. Capcom suddenly announces that Phoenix will no longer appear in the Ace Attorney franchise! Your reaction? He’s been replaced by Penny Nichols. Fuck you.
38. Capcom suddenly announces that the Ace Attorney franchise has ended for good! Your reaction? it was me i ended it
39. Would you like there to be another Ace Attorney/Professor Layton crossover game? i didnt play it but i really like the idea!!!!!! aa crossover games are really funny to me, i mean have you seen edgeworth in project x zone 2, lmao
40. Would you like an Ace Attorney anime? we have one now! honestly i don’t think it did a very good job of representing the cases, but it did do a good character remix of turnabout big top so that they’re not creepy anymore. they also did a really good job with the anime-specific cases, like the one on the train! it feels a lot better paced when it’s intended for that medium rather than just adapted.  also the childhood episodes made me cry
41. Opinion on anime cutscenes in Ace Attorney? like in 5 and 6? mm, the art style is kinda weird, and i don’t really like the voices, but i guess not everything can be pachinko and prozd
42. Would you want to play an Ace Attorney game where you take on the prosecutor’s role? YEAH ACTUALLY!!!!!! it might be kinda weird being on the right side of the screen though lmao
43. Do you like having DLC in Ace Attorney-games? uhhh i hate having to buy extra things, but i’ll admit that they are pretty funny
44. Opinion on Lamiroir’s storyline? i only played aj so if shes in other games idk but i thought she was fine
45. One thing you think the Ace Attorney games can improve on? stop having creepy characters please. also jesus christ if phoenix and edgeworth arent wearing rings in aa7 i will become the ceo of capcom myself
46. Capcom suddenly announces an Ace Attorney movie! Would you like it to be based on an already existing case or would you like an all new storyline? i mean the musical did a pretty good job of adapting existing cases, so it might as well be new. it would be kinda hard to balance the games’ timeline & character development without being repetitive or an au
47. Capcom suddenly announces an Ace Attorney movie! Would you prefer it being live-action, 3D animated or 2D animated? stylized 2D animation, probably? i would want it to feel more like into the spiderverse than an anime, though. in my dream ace attorney movie, they’d just need a high art budget, several plausible deniability wrightworth scenes, and prozd to voice edgeworth
48. If there could be an Ace Attorney crossover with whatever franchise you’d like, which one would you choose? (Does not need to be a video-game franchise) your turn to die is probably closest in characterization, although its premise is more “locked in a room” than the open-world investigation of aa
49. Opinion on recurring witnesses? (Wendy Oldbag, Lotta Hart, Larry Butz, etc.) honestly, i like them a lot! i don’t know why people hate them so much - i mean, i know lotta lied, and wendy is a horrible old flirt, and larry just kinda sucks all around. but they’re also pretty funny to have around! larry is a constant comic relief who reminds you how much better nick & edgey are in comparison, lotta is likeable as a general character (like in 2-4, although yeah, not remarkable), and wendy oldbag is really funny. she’s so fucking funny. none of you appreciate wendy oldbag’s quirks and you are SLEEPING ON IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
50. Do you think Dual Destinies deserved its M-rating? no idea, holy shit, it got an m-rating? i mean every game before it has had blood violence and very mild swearing, and since DD probably doesnt have anything too sexually risqué, i doubt it deserves a rating any harsher than the rest of the series
okay thanks thats all

there are so many things i appreciate about this art. the perspective on shelly’s arm. bronco’s expression. the complete interchangeability of the unnamed bald security guards
there’s more to this than you can get in one screenshot but the implied relationship between rook and de killer is a lot of fun. de killer is one of those tertiary ace attorney characters who exists in a heightened-tropey place that, when it intersects with the actual main plot of the games, seems to leave glimpses of something more. I really enjoy the honorable hitman-consummate professional bodyguard cat-and-mouse thing

Dear Sinless,
I have no idea where that came from, for one thing.  I’m neither almighty nor all-knowing, but I appreciate the praise (even if it’s supposed to be sarcastic -- I can’t really tell).
Tumblr media
Dear sinyove,
You look familiar...
Anyway, that’s a good question.  Sweating isn’t something you just forget how to do, so I imagine AJ Phoenix still sweats in nervous situations, just not as often since he isn’t involved in courtroom proceedings.  Plus he works at a cold restaurant, so that’s probably helped to cool him down a little.
Tumblr media
Dear sinyove again,
Sorry, but there’s no way for us to do that without answering it right away, so we’ll probably have to leave it as it was.  We’ll change it if we remember, though.
Tumblr media
(Song in Letter)
Dear CreatorOfSinyove,
That’s a pretty cool mashup, but I’m a little confused as to why you wanted me to call you by a different name.  You can always send letters with whatever name you want if you log out of your account first.  (Please forgive me if I’m missing something obvious here.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dear Ethan Starbright,
Cute!  Unfortunately, I haven’t seen the play, so sorry for not getting the references.
Dear Ethan Starbright,
I'm not sure how I feel about Dahlia being Eliza... But a more important question, does that make Miles Burr? Or maybe Godot?
Tumblr media
(Previous Letter)
Dear Anonymous,
I wasn’t sure if this was meant for Phoenix or for us, so I’ll go ahead and answer it.  He’s saying he wouldn’t hire Shelly de Killer because he himself would end Kristoph.  You’d better hope and pray we never have to see that timeline.
Tumblr media
Dear skibot99,
It’s hard to say since I enjoy just about all of them, but my least favorite case is probably Turnabout Big Top.  The characters were charming, but the story was slow-going, and the contradictions were way too hard to figure out sometimes.
Incidentally, my favorite case is Turnabout Time Traveler.  It delighted me to see that the writers at Capcom still had it in them to make such a fun and imaginative legal adventure for Phoenix and Maya after all these years, and that neither of them had last their edge as clever and quirky crime-solvers.  I also happen to be a homeless hopeless romantic, and the idea of a man rescuing his bride from certain death (and the two of them continuing to love each other despite his anterograde amnesia) was incredibly touching for me.  In the words of Huey Lewis, “The power of love is a curious thing.”
Dear skibot99,
I honestly don't think I have a least favorite case, because maybe in one case I dislike how the story is proceeding (very slow or confusing), but I may find the characters very interesting, and vice versa.
However, my favorite case would have to be Rise from the ashes or any case from AAI2.
Tumblr media
Dear skibot99 again,
I haven’t really seen enough of the anime to judge it as a whole, but from what I’ve seen of it, it’s definitely worth watching.  I'd have to say that I prefer the games overall -- though, to be fair, I’d probably say that about any cartoon based on a game -- but the music, voice-acting, and animation are all pretty spectacular, and I love how many extra details it includes that would’ve been practically impossible to fit into the original trilogy games.  The adaptation from game to anime is fantastic as well, but I definitely prefer the English dubs over the Japanese ones.  Japanese is a lovely language, but hearing the characters speak English, rather than only seeing it, opens the series up to a much wider audience, and you’ve gotta love that.
Speaking of Japan, I’d say the best change to the storyline is having Phoenix and company actually live there instead of America, so we no longer have to wonder where all the Japanese culture is coming from or call it “Japanifornia” -- true, that inconsistency has made for some hilarious jokes, but at least now things make a little more sense.
As for the worst storyline change, it was sort of disappointing for me that Phoenix and Maya’s first encounter was so short -- they didn’t even say anything to each other until he visited her in prison.  It was still pretty sweet, but Maya’s introduction of herself to Phoenix was one of my favorite parts of the game, so I was sad to see that cut out of the anime.  I’ve never attempted to turn a video game into an anime, though, so I can let it go.
I do have to wonder why they thought they needed more than ten policemen to arrest Frank Sahwit, though...
Tumblr media
Dear Bruce Goodman,
Aw, crud...  I accidentally smudged an important part of this letter.  And it was sent to us over a year ago, wasn’t it?  Sheesh, I’m getting clumsy...
In all serious, I prefer not to show the names of real-life politicians on this blog, but I hope you can put that information to good use.
Tumblr media
Dear Anonymous,
Let’s see...
Tumblr media
Yep, that’s a pretty uncanny resemblance, but I think it’s just coincidence.  I can’t imagine his mom letting him take on that sort of role, even if he had a stunt double.

Dear Anonymous,
I hate to spoil all your hard work, but I’m afraid I don’t know which image link you’re referring to (unless you meant this one).  Could you please clarify?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Previous Letter)
Dear M,
Thanks a bunch, first of all.  There’s a lot to be said about the Royal Family of Khura’in (plus I tend to ramble anyway), so I did my best to keep it short.
Secondly, you’ve raised some good points.  I sort of snuck in the comparison to the Hawthorne twins at the last minute, so I didn’t give it as much thought as I probably should have.  It’d be more accurate for me to say that I thought she was that she was too meek to disobey her sister (in fact, I went ahead and rewrote it that way in the essay).
I'm a huge fan of Iris, by the way, and I agree that she can be strong when the need arises, but there are at least a few things that led me to believe she still has a bad habit of caving in to pressure from others.  First, while she never actually obeyed Dahlia, she chose to do whatever was necessary to keep her crimes a secret, rather than making the harder but wiser decision of turning her in to the police.  Second, she was willing to cooperate with someone she barely knew (Godot), even to the point of taking a dead body and impaling it with a statue’s sword -- that took some guts, I’ll admit, but it also landed her in prison.  And third, she was willing to take the fall for everyone involved in the plan to stop Dahlia in case something went wrong.  Whether she decided to do that out of guilt for her past sins, or for some other reason, it was still highly questionable at best.  Take the blame for a murder I didn’t commit and let Godot have his way?  Sure, why not?
All that being said, I also believe that she managed to forgive herself after everything was out in the open.  Most of Iris’s responses were written by someone else (the ones with lowercase tags were written by the Mod), but I guess I have sort of portrayed her as still feeling guilty about her masquerade, and that does seem a bit out of character now that you mention it, so I’ll try to keep that in mind for future letters to her.  Thanks for bringing it up.
Also, while we’re on this subject, this comparison reminded me of this letter that I sent back before I was a moderator.  It’s sort of heartwarming, isn’t it?
(You were so sweet sometimes, Mod...  *sniffle*)

Shelly de Killer
hey, nice one!!
How I feel about this characterLook, he creeps me out, but exactly as he’s supposed to?? Although I appreciated his help hugely in AAI2-1, tbh I’d buy him a drink for holding Knightley back and letting me get on with my job
All the people I ship romantically with this characterUhh no one, really...
My non-romantic OTP for this characterYou know, I can see him and Viola getting along quite nicely, in the underworld context, anyway. Like, I can see that he’d appreciate her sense of humour...
My unpopular opinion about this characterUHH I’m so bad at these, idk, and I don’t remember enough about the Grand Turnabout to take anything from there...
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.Look, I love him, but I W I S H someone figured out who he was?? Like, just a throwaway part where someone figures out who he is, just after he’s gone, and is like “wait, that’s-!”
