Sometimes I remember he died, he was dead for real, but SO MANY people loved him SO MUCH that he was brought back to life and got to have so many more adventures and get old and eventually retire and yes it's a fictional character but sometimes I think about that and I have to lie down and have a cry about it. We love you Sherlock Holmes

The Red-Headed League

After Watson’s statement in “A Scandal in Bohemia” that he had both married and settled in practice, the rest of the stories create a very contradictory entanglement of facts. The Doctor’s marital affairs are confusing, to say the least. In “The Five Orange Pips”, he refers to a wife, although the events take place before their first meeting. Mrs Watson is then granted a few occasional scenes but is more often conveniently out of the picture, and she disappears completely post-hiatus, although a later mention of an unnamed wife is made in the Holmes-penned “The Blanched Soldier”.

Watson’ medical activities are even more puzzling than any number of wives we choose to marry him to. In “The Stock Broker’s Clerk", he tells us he purchased a small practice shortly after his marriage that he dedicated himself to restore to its former glory, as by the time of the Boscombe Valley case he has a “fairly long list” of patients. But the events of the League take place shortly after, and he confesses his work “is never very absorbing”. The Doctor’s habit of pawning off his patients to his neighbour(s) when Holmes engages him on a case of interest surely did not help to retain them. Watson might have found, like his literary agent Dr Doyle, that it is difficult to pursue a career as a doctor while trying to gain success as a writer.

It's the year 2025 and we seriously need a word for people who are in a fandom but don't play the game/watch the show/read the book.

The people who, for whatever reason, don't have the means to consume the media itself yet are still very much active in the fandom. Floating around like ghosts. I have a word for it (if it doesn't exist already):

how on earth did they get old russian holmes so perfect. exploring watson’s initial fear/apprehension of his roommate, holmes feeling bad for not being the pop culture guru watson expects, the boxing match? i don’t even care they put the speckled band as the first case. i don’t even care that holmes only smokes a pipe and nothing else. they gave us middle aged basically content holmes and a watson that rivals a golden retriever puppy and a mrs hudson who is the least nosy hudson to ever hudson and they said trust us this will devour and it fucking did.

the crazy thing abt "the literary canon is inaccessible" argument is that. it is quite literally some of the most accessible literature out there. depending on the format you prefer, famous books in the public domain are often available for free. if you're having trouble understanding a book, there are almost always discussion and literary guides that you can also find for free. if you genuinely still find old books too difficult but want to get into them, keep shopping around for authors and genres. if the topic interests you then you'll have more passion for a book and i guarantee you not all 100+y/o authors have confusing writing styles. and once you get into a groove it gets easier and easier, & more and more fun
