He really does try to do this the right way (aside from murdering his wife). Azul is in his ear at all hours of the day, trying to keep Floyd on a fairly normal person track. If you kidnap Shrimpy, they will never ever love you. Meanwhile, Jade is in the background reminding the both of them that they can just buy off whoever they need to, funds are not an issue.

He really has a devil and a corrupt angel on his shoulder. More accurately, two different kinds of devil's, as Azul is giving him master manipulation tips.

And at first, Floyd's more willing to listen to Azul. He was betrothed at a young age, and then shoved into marriage immediately after graduation, the two of them hating each other practically instantly. He never got to experience young love, or coy courtship, or silly little crush moments that only happen in the beginning of the relationship. He's spent 20 years in a miserable marriage, and he kind of wants a chance to experience normal people love...

But he's also impatient. So the longer you don't pick up his hints, or brush off his flirtations, or say stupid things like, "you're a wonderful person but I'm not ready to be a parent to six kids", the more he's gonna lean towards Jade's advice.

The more impatient he is, the more his kidnapping plan develops.

It is honestly so embarrassing the grip that Floyd's basketball uniform has on me because I just know his dick is huge. On Sk.irk and His Mental State

warnings for: death, discussions of trauma, dissociation/depersonalization, sui/cidal behavior

Ajax fell into the Abyss at 14 years old — a child. He fell into a land of darkness and monsters, alone, barely a teenager, and this was absolutely traumatic for him. Here, he met Sk.irk.

When we see their reunion in the AQ, she dismisses him as weak — despite him fighting the Narwhal for weeks, a beast that took a fully realized Sovereign to beat (not kill; beat). She states she does not talk to him or give him much acknowledgement because of this perceived weakness.

This was the person who he found in the Abyss, as a lost, scared child. A weak child who needed to become strong to earn a scrap of her attention, attention that was key to his survival. Knowing this, it's easy to see why he is so obsessed with becoming stronger. Even after meeting her, he had to fight for every second of his survival, because to be weak in her eyes meant he would be alone again, in an unfamiliar world full of beasts trying to kill him.

The only reason she gave him any attention at all was Foul Legacy — on this blog, she did not teach him the transformation, but rather how to use it.

Even after he left the Abyss, this fear for his life stayed with him. In addition to my other hcs regarding this (his sleeping habits, nightmares, hiding food, etc), he fixated on becoming stronger because the memories of those monsters are always there. He cannot be that helpless child ever again.

And of course, when he finally returned home, his parents could not or would not help this traumatized child. He tried to prove his strength to them, but instead of acknowledging it, being proud of it, they were terrified. His escalating violence to get them to see it, to pay attention to him, was a reaction born from his interactions with Sk.irk; but this only made his parents more terrified. They treated him like a monster, for the very thing that helped him survive.

When they brought him to the Fatui, again he used a show of strength to preemptively protect himself — see, he was strong, he was not some weak child to prey upon. And again, this only served to scare others, and once again, he was outcast. Pulcinella was the next adult figure to give him any sort of attention, and the young Ajax latched onto this, still caught up in his survival mechanism from the Abyss. Someone was giving him attention, praise — so he would be exactly what Pulcinella, what the Tsaritsa, wanted of him.

Blood and violence does not bother him, but he does not enjoy hurting others for the sake of hurting them. He is not a sadist, nor does he lose control of himself during a battle. He says during the Liyue AQ he doesn't want to release Osial and harm innocents, but he does so anyway to complete his mission, with the full belief Rex Lapis will show himself to fend off Osial. During the Fontaine AQ, he shows situational awareness in that fight with the Narwhal; he knows where the fleeing civilians are and drives the Narwhal away from them, and he is able to set up the Narwhal for a shot from Neuvi, and all of this despite already having fought the thing for weeks and being clearly exhausted.

He needs to be wanted, and he needs to be seen as strong, because to not be these things would have meant his death in the Abyss. Even out of the situation that traumatized you in the first place, it sticks with you, and coping mechanisms that may have helped you survive that situation can very well be maladaptive outside of it. He never got any sort of support to heal from that mindset, and the Fatui actively fed into it.

But inside is still that child who longed to be a hero, who wanted to be loved. You can still see him in Ch.ilde's love for his siblings, his dedication to those he cares for. Ajax wants to be seen, to feel worthy of being seen without constantly having to prove himself strong enough to deserve it — and yet this is not a mindset he can readily put down, even for one person. It is ingrained into his behavior at a fundamental level.

This desire to be strong has led him to separate himself from 'Ajax'. He views Ajax as a weak, naive child, and convinces himself that is no longer him. He is a mask that Ch.ilde will wear around his family because he loves them, but that child is no longer him. (You believe that, right? Please believe that.) Yet his Harbinger persona is as much a mask as Ajax is. He chases battle, is always trying to become stronger, not only to convince others around him but himself.

Mentioned su/icidal behavior cw. He is so caught up in this he doesn't care about his own safety, his own life. Delusion that saps your life force? Don't mind if he does. Throwing himself into battle against stronger opponents? Here he goes. Pulcinella states that he craves encounters that bring him closest to his own demise. It is a sort of thrill, a comfort to him, proving to himself he can survive, but if he does die? Fine. He does not care for his own life. End cw.

tldr: he is not okay. His time in the Abyss was absolutely traumatic for him, and his time with Sk.irk and how his parents treated him afterwards has led to his current mindset today.

Looking back on 2023, I think one fic I'm really proud of writing is this one, a multichapter Symphonia fic I was able to complete, with a focus on Lloyd and his wings taking on a different transformation. It's seven chapters of Lloyd and Colette dealing with the painful and difficult changes, but also the rest of the party helping them on this new shift in their journey. Since this year for Colloyd Week was going to be its 5th year running, and it was also Symphonia's 20th anniversary, me and @frayed-symphony wanted to do something a bit more special with the prompts this time. We decided to bring back some prompts from previous weeks while still using a new quote day and the usual free day. (Here's the prompt list with her art which everyone should see) With that in mind, I also wanted to do something a bit different for myself writing-wise, and tell a story over the course of each of the prompts!

The tidbit about mana wings eventually becoming more feathered versions is actually a bit of lore taken from the Kratos novel. Essentially, if an angel uses it for too long, the wings will become a permanent part of the body, the mana solidifying into feathers. That's why we see a lot of angels in Welgaia floating about with feathered wings, and explains why Kratos, Yuan and Mithos don't keep theirs out consistently. And the reason for the title, it's from the Lloyd's Thoughts on Angels skit because I thought it would be fun to make all those angelic issues relevant for this fic.

I really wanted to use this bit of canon lore for Lloyd, and whether it's an effect of his unique Exsphere, or anything else, his wings succumb to the same transformation. But, well, it's more than just the wings changing here.

I also wanted to play more with Lloyd's self-consciousness here and the guilt he probably still carries with him when he failed to notice Colette suffering in time. Lloyd is also the unifying force for the party where he helps inspire and lift them up from each member's own troubles, but I also wanted to see this reversed while Lloyd is going through his own baggage and past traumas. It was also more interesting to write about Lloyd going through physical changes the way Colette did in the game and have that comfort role-reversed.

A lot of this fic was a learning process! The wings in Symphonia are just a favorite aesthetic for me, and learning about how they can change was really intriguing, so much of this fic centered around the Wings prompt. I was also planning on having everyone play a part with the Soulmates prompt, which I felt was fitting for Symphonia's anniversary year. Much of the later half of the story came as it went, like with the focus on Dirk, and the very last chapter that's a few years in the future, where Lloyd has a better handle on who he is now.

Change itself is also something I just wanted to focus on overall; how we change as people, or how our loved ones change over time. And sometimes change is frightening, but it can also be exciting and learning to accept and welcome it can also feel rewarding in the end. I think I wanted to show that in this fic, though how well I succeeded kinda depends on the reading, and maybe I was heavy-handed with the wings metaphor haha.

But also, I just wanted to write a longer cute ship fic of my OTP. That's another reason. :D

Compared to most chaptered fics, this isn't very long, but I like that it's contained enough at just over 36k. I still have other Symphonia WIPs I want to finish, but I'm really proud of completing this one, and a big thank you to those who've read and commented on this fic! Symphonia has always been special to me and I'm glad I could celebrate both the game and my favorite ship this way.

Around the new year, I'll probably make a Symphonic fic recs list for stories I've read this year. If you read this far, hope you'll look forward to it!

thinking about family dynamics in the AU where Fredrica takes Kaeya in to betroth him to Jean and. he gets the divorce in bits and pieces, but he works out that Jean is very sad about it and wishes she could see see Barbara more often. and it is his job now to keep Jean happy, because if she doesn't like him, Fredrica may decide to cancel the betrothal and get rid of him. Barbara is at the Cathedral, which is where they take people who get hurt. so ten*-year-old Kaeya's cunning plan is to get just hurt enough that he can ask Jean to take him to the Cathedral on a regular basis. it's fool-proof! (it is not. everyone** is unhappy with him when they figure it out and he has no idea why.)

Demons are used to having their human pact masters perish in such short periods of time that they never get to make the most out of pacts. It's expected. It's the norm. No one would really bat an eye once the human soul leaves the body and the pact is severed.

But what if the demon dies first?

That would be a very rare case. Demons don't really have a fixed lifespan. They would either succumb to deep slumber, almost like a comatose, or they are killed.

What would the human do when their beloved demon dies before they do? Can they handle the grief? Can they bear to feel the pact severing?

What if they can't? What if that human takes the corpse and flees?

What would they do when they find out that the body still reacts to pact commands?

Hack job taxidermy, playing dress up with a corpse, finding any and all means to pretty up their demon (especially if the cause of death was gruesome and left the body barely recognisable), making sure to care for them now that they can't do it on their own, exhausting themself due to constantly using commands because otherwise, the truth seeps in little by little, chipping away at the illusion.

They ignore that their demon can't speak anymore, that they aren't even remotely warm. They have to constantly use magic to make sure the joints don't stiffen too much or that the smell doesn't get too awful. They bring gifts, offer food, share a meal. They talk about their day and how excited they are for future plans, smiling like the dead silence isn't what they're hearing after they stop talking.

At some point they have to procure glass eyeballs to replace the eyes but none can do justice to their beloved's!

"Don't worry, darling. It's my turn to take care of you."

It's morbid. It's disrespectful. It's mocking the dead with every syllable uttered in command.

So the demons wait. Eventually, the human will pass, and their kin can receive the send off they deserve. Even after the human reaches the end of their minute lifespan, they'll probably rot first than the demon corpse they've puppeteered around for decades.

And even if they're too stubborn to die, the Reapers aren't hard to get a hold of.

I have a suggestion: Mangaka artist!Floyd and hikikomori!Darling. He uses his manga as a away to let off some fantasies he has of his "Internet obsession crush"

I could attempt to envision it (unless he truly wants to be locked up in a room for whatever reason, but it's very likely he won't stay there for long), but as unlikely as it is it's interesting to imagine hikikomori!Floyd. Although that would most likely twist his personality and character into something ooc. >_< but the idea of Floyd, who becomes so bored while hiding from the police, that he takes up art and eventually finds himself drawing manga panels of some faceless eel mer (it's definitely him) railing you (someone he's found online and has fallen in love with) is so <3 !!!!!!!

Or maybe you model for him so he can get the poses just right. Whether that's by visiting his place in person or (if it's hikikomori!darling) by sending him photos of you replicating the poses... the duality of Floyd is so fun because on one hand he can be scary crime boss hiding from the police all the time, but maybe he also has a side hobby/job of writing and illustrating r18 doujinshi. And he absolutely enjoys both lines of work because they're fun and exciting.

headcanons are free and interpretations of media are up to the beholder. but, i do think people are too quick to dismiss .hack//sign as f/f (eg by reading it as a trans narrative). like they're approaching it from a "what if tsukasa was a real person" lens and not a "what did the writers, etc intend to portray here" one.

yuri for a long time has been kinda pigeonholed into its own niche: if it's explicitly romantic love, it's not marketable, so there's the usual reliance on subtext with most popular series. so from that angle, i think it's actually very cool that .hack//sign introduces you to a clearly romantic relationship that you assume reasonably is m/f, but turns out it's f/f!.... and that changes absolutely nothing!

like isn't that kind of beautiful? i'm a sucker for yuri, don't get me wrong, and i love plenty of different flavors of it. i'm not opposed to a little forbidden love, a little cliche drama, etc. but there's something to be said imo for a work that just presents love As Is. and i think we shouldn't diminish that.
