You let out a low groan as you feel someone shaking your shoulders in an attempt to rouse you, “Hey. Y/N? Can you hear me? Open your eyes for me sweetheart.” You can vaguely hear Eddie’s voice cutting through the haze, but your eyes are just too heavy.
Eddie moves his fingers to the side of your neck, feeling for your pulse. He lets out a sigh of relief to feel the gentle thrumming beneath his finger tips, even if it is a little fast for his liking. He gently shakes your shoulders once more, releasing another sigh of relief as your eyes begin to flutter open.
“Ed…?” you slurred, as consciousness returns to you. “What? Why am I on the floor?” Your mind still fuzzy, your head pounding, probably from the impact of your head hitting the floor considering the last thing you remember was helping Eddie in the kitchen before the world began to spin.
Eddie can sense your rising anxiety as you come to your senses a little more and attempt to sit up, easing you back down with a gentle hand on your shoulder. “Easy cariña, you fainted. Just lay back for me, you’re alright. We’ve got you,” he reassures.
We? Right…you were at Buck’s. You and Eddie had gone there after work to hang out.
You startle as you hear a noise from your side, watching as Buck comes into view and sets the first aid kit you knew he kept in his closet beside you. The younger man kneels beside you, opposite Eddie, unzipping the kit to pull out a piece of gauze before passing the kit over to Eddie.
Buck moves into your line of sight, taking your focus away from Eddie as he begins to pull out various pieces of equipment, sensing your anxiety growing more. “I’m just going to hold this to the side of your head, alright? You bumped your head pretty hard when you hit the floor.” He apologies as the contact causes you to flinch away, but he holds your head steady with his other hand on the other side of your face.
You see Eddie placing a stethoscope around his neck, and feel your breathing start to come a little quicker, suddenly feeling self-conscious of all the attention on you.
“You know, I’m actually feeling a lot better. It’s okay. I’m just really tired or it’s probably just low blood sugar. I’m fine…really. I don’t need the hospital or anything, really,” you stutter, trying to sit up once more.
“Hey,” Eddie speaks up from your other side, taking your hand in his and squeezing it reassuringly, “No one said anything about the hospital, I can’t rule it out just yet, but I just need to check you over, that’s non-negotiable. Can you be brave for me? Just for a little while.”
You nod defeatedly, allowing Buck to ease you back down this time. A stray tear rolls down your cheek at the thought of there being something wrong with you, but you know you’re in safe hands with the pair of them at your side.
“That’s it. Just lay back, we’ve got you. You’re safe,” Buck reassures, wiping away the stray tear with the pad of his thumb.
“Did you have any symptoms before you passed out? Any dizziness, blurred vision, palpitations?”
You give a worried look to Buck, but an encouraging nod from him has you nodding your head, “i-is that bad?”
“Try not to worry, it could be nothing,” Buck tries to reassure you.
“B-but it could be something. I’ve never passed out before,” your panic begins to rise once more, the thought of something being wrong with you overwhelming you.
“I need you to take a deep breath for me sweetheart,” Eddie says this time, “We need you calm okay, just let me worry about everything else.”
You mimic Eddie as he takes a slow, deep breath, feeling a little calmer. “Good, now, keep taking deep breaths with Buck here, and let me check you over. I’ll explain everything before I do it and if it gets too much we’ll take a break.”
Buck gently moves back into your line of vision, taking slow deep breaths for you to follow.
“I’m just going to check your pulse,” Eddie announces, gently placing his fingers around your wrist and glancing at his watch. You focus on your breath, following Buck and trying not to focus on the feeling of your pulse tapping away against Eddie’s touch.
He sets your arm down by your side, before picking up the blood pressure cuff from the kit next. “Is it alright if I just slip this on here?” You nod your consent, trying not to focus on the feeling of the cool fabric as Eddie wraps it tightly around your upper arm. You watch as he puts on the stethoscope and places it at the crook of your elbow, “Just a little squeeze here.” He inflates the cuff, just enough to be uncomfortable before releasing it, quickly and efficiently taking the reading.
“Your vitals are a little concerning,” Eddie quickly continues, before you work yourself up again, “I’m just going to check one more thing, is it alright if I check your blood sugar?”
The thought of the needle pricking your finger is enough to make bile rise at the back of your throat, but you knew Eddie wouldn’t be asking if he wasn’t certain.
As if he were able to read your mind, Eddie speaks up once more, “I’ll be as gentle as I can and it’ll be over before you know it.”
You nod once more, offering your middle finger to Eddie and holding out your free hand to Buck to hold as Eddie gets the necessary equipment together. “Do you want me to count down?” Eddie asks as he presses the tip of the lancet against your chosen finger.
“Count down please,” you ask as you look away and focus on Buck, squeezing his hand tighter.
“One…two…three.”
Before you have a chance to even think, you feel the needle quickly pinch your skin before Eddie squeezes your finger and takes the reading. Buck is quick, grabbing another piece of gauze from the packet he’d opened earlier and wraps it around the tip of your finger.
The machine beeps and Eddie lets out a small, “hmm” drawing both of your attention back to him. He turns the monitor around, showing you and Buck the reading. “I think we’ve found our culprit.”
“Low blood sugar?” you ask.
“Seems to be the issue, and it fits your other symptoms,” Eddie confirms.
“Am I going to be okay?” you ask, worried at the thought of a trip to the hospital and more needles.
“I think we can manage it here, we’ll settle you on the couch and get you some juice and a snack. Does that sound okay?”
You sit up with the help of Buck and Eddie either side of you, leaning against them as you sway a little. They help you to the couch, settling you down with a glass of juice.
“We’ll let you finish that and then we’ll just check your blood sugar once more, make sure everything's coming back to normal but I think you’re going to be just fine,” Eddie reassures as he takes the seat next to you.
Buck takes a seat at your other side, nestling you safely between the pair of them, “you know, if you wanted to pick the take out and movie tonight, you didn’t have to go to such extremes.”
The three of you fall into a fit of laughter, the anxiety from earlier long forgotten as you settle in for the evening with the two people you felt safest with.

24. "I'm so sorry" (Alt 5)
Harrison hadn't long been home from uni. He loved it, he really did but he missed Steve too. He loved coming home for the holidays, especially Christmas. They always made a big deal about it, making up for the years they'd missed. As much as Harrison tried to help Steve cook, it was usually for the best he didn't.
Steve picked him up a week before Christmas, and Harrison was grateful for the rest before the celebration. It gave him a chance to recover from the late nights and no long days, a chance to shake the illness that had been threatening to overwhelm him.
He crashed as soon as he got in, unusual for him, but Steve had expected it. The texts over the week had complained about the tsunami of exams that threatened to drown him. He looked exhausted, too, so Steve offered to take some food up for him later. He left it on the bedside table Harrison all wrapped up and fast asleep in his duvet.
It was early afternoon when Harrison emerged, stumbling downstairs in his pyjamas and oversized hoodie Steve glanced up from his book, frowning at the state of him. He looked terrible, pale, and tired, even after his nap.
"Morning. How are you feeling?"
Harrison gave him a smile. "Morning. I don't feel great." He admitted.
"You don't look great." Steve said softly. "Headache? Feeling sick? Pain?"
He settled on the sofa, snuggling up. "My stomach hurts and I feel sick, I thought it was just the stress from exams."
Steve made a soft noise. 'Oh, bless you. Want some meds?"
Harrison nodded. "Yes,please."
"Ill be a minute. "Steve said to him, standing to go to the kitchen. "Anything else you want?"
"No thanks." He called to his dad over the rummaging in the kitchen.
Steve wasn't long, returning with medication and a glass of juice. "Here."
"Thank you." He said, gratefully taking them. "Hopefully helps."
"Yeah, hopefully it does. Steve smiled. "We've got the tree to decorate."
"Yeah. Can't wait."
“I was thinking after we’ve decorated the tree we can put on a shitty Christmas film?”
Harrison stretched out with a whine. "Uh, yeah. Sure."
“Hopefully those meds kick in soon.”
"I hope so. I feel shit."
Steve settled on the sofa with him, wrapping an arm around him gently. “It’s good to have you back.”
He leaned into him. "I'm glad to be home."
“The house is always quiet without you.”
"You're being a right sap, Steve." He laughed softly, the furthest thing from mad.
“Piss off, I’m allowed to be a sap.”
"Mm. I don't mind."
“Good, because I’m not stopping.”
Harrison gave a quiet hum in response. As much as he played the part of the grumpy young adult, he loved when Steve showed affection, when he got to make up for family life he'd missed out on. He was quite content just leaning against Steve, enjoying the contact from his dad.
Steve turned to press a kiss to the top of his head. “Proud of you.”
He found himself choked up. "You are?"
“Of course I am.”
"You shouldn't be."
“Why not?”
"Because."
“Don’t be daft.”
"I'm not. I just do daft shit, you know that."
“I’m proud of you because I’m your Dad.”
He smiled. "I'm glad you're my dad."
“Me too.” He said. “Feeling any better?”
"Not really. But I want to get the tree done."
“Do you want to try?”
"Yeah."
Steve stood, offering Harrison his hands to help him up. “Let’s do it, then.”
He took his hands, grinning. "Let's do it."
Steve put some Christmas music on the speaker, filling the living room with old, nostalgic music. Christmas was difficult for him, since he’d lost the kids, but Harrison helped him infinitely. He could give him the memories he’d not had as a kid, what he deserved.
Harrison managed to ignore the pain while they decorated, and, for a while, it worked. He loved Christmases with Steve, and as much as he knew Santa wasn't real, it still felt magical.
Of course, he knew Steve struggled with big events, but he'd been working on it for a little while. They talked about his kids, his late wife, it wasn’t something that Harrison wasn't aware of. It was bittersweet at times, and he knew the only reason he had a family was because Steve had lost his. He disappeared to his room, returning with a few delicate glass baubles.
"Steve?"
Steve looked up from where he was knelt on the floor, trying to program the lights. “Yeah?”
Harrison hesitated, suddenly aware of how he'd probably overstepped and Steve was going to hate him. He took a breath before kneeling by him, hands outstretched. "I got these, for Jon and Amy and Bella."
Steve stopped, looking up at his son. “Oh, Hars.” He breathed, suddenly choked up. “Thank you.”
He held them out for Steve to take. "Here."
“Let me get up, I don’t want to break them.” He said, getting to his feet before he took them from him. “They’re beautiful.”
"I was terrified they'd break on the way home." He admitted.
“They look okay.”
"I'm glad."
“Here, help me put them on the tree.”
"Are you sure?"
“Of course I’m sure.”
Harrison found himself choked up again, and he gave Steve a watery smile. "Thank you."
“I’d hug you but I don’t want to break them. There’s a spot here? Seem good?”
Harrison nodded, not trusting himself to speak. He carefully helped Steve hang them on the tree before turning to hug him.
"I wish I could have met them."
Steve held him tight. “I wish you could have too. They’d love you.”
"They would?" His voice wavered. "I'd have loved proper siblings."
“They would. Bella would’ve been head over heels, too.”
Harrison sniffed. "I'm sorry."
“No, don’t apologise. Are you feeling any better?”
He hesitated, not wanting to admit that he still felt like shit. "A bit."
“You still feel all feverish.” Steve murmured. “Are you sure?”
So much for that. "No."
He frowned. “Let’s sit, then. You don’t look great. Pain still bad?”
He nodded. "And I feel sick."
“Shivery and feverish too?”
"It's just a bug."
“That’s a yes, then.” Steve said, steering him to the sofa. “Where’s the pain?”
"Stomach." He admitted.
“All over?”
"The bottom."
Steve sighed. “Think we should probably get you checked out.”
"I don't want to, can't we just stay here?"
“I know, but I think it’s best.”
"Please? I'll say if I feel worse."
“Sooner we go, sooner we can come back.”
"I've ruined Christmas."
“You’ve not ruined anything.”
"I have." He already felt so miserable, so the tears were quick to fall. "I have."
“You’ve not, it’s okay.” Steve soothed, pulling him in for a hug.
Harrison broke, curling into Steve's side. Sure, he was an adult now, but he felt so rubbish that he could have been a child again. The pain really was bad, and each sob only made it worse. The paracetamol hadn't touched it, the juice he'd taken with it only added to the nausea, and it was almost too late when he realised. He shoved Steve away from him, struggling to his feet and rushing to the bathroom. He dropped to his knees, head in the toilet as he vomited.
Steve sighed as Harrison was sick, though it stopped his initial confusion as to why he’d pulled away so quickly, He followed him into the bathroom, kneeling next to him. “Bless you. That’s it, get it up, you’ll feel better for it.”
After a few more episodes of vomiting, he rocked back on his heels, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. He leaned against Steve’s side, closing his eyes and taking a moment to try and catch his breath. The pain seemed to have shifted too, with all the vomiting, and he somehow felt even worse.
"I think I need to go to hospital."
Steve rubbed his back again, holding him close. “I think so too. You stay here, I’ll grab you a few bits, and then we can go.”
"I'm so sorry for ruining everything."
“You’ve not ruined anything.” Steve reassured. “Are you okay for a couple of minutes whilst I go and sort some bits?”
"Yeah." He nodded. "But don't be too long?"
“I won’t be.” He said gently. “We’ll get you sorted out, and no need to apologise. Nothing is ruined. You’ve made my Christmas with those ornaments.”
Harrison whined as he moved, a hand across his stomach. "Thank you."

@sicktember Alt. #5: Vapor Rub
Fandom: Marvel (Spider-Man: No Way Home)
Characters: Peter One (Tom Holland), Peter Two (Tobey Maguire), Peter Three (Andrew Garfield)
~
If the Parker brothers were to nominate “most likely to take a vow of silence,” Peter Two would’ve been their first candidate even before this throat infection. He was the most soft-spoken of the three, letting his brothers do the majority of the quip work. They were the type of dorks who rambled to dispel nervous tension. He was the dork who had clammed up in his girl’s presence for the first decade of knowing her.
Clammy he looked indeed, hair tousled, face wan and eyes half-lidded, an afghan trailing behind him as he padded toward the cracked window where Peter One and Three were waiting. Hadn’t he texted earlier telling them not to come?
“…W-What are you doing here? I could still be contagious,” he whispered, wincing deeply. Every raw syllable was like swallowing splinters.
“We’re not sticking around to catch your cooties,” Three promised. “We just wanted to drop off a couple things that might help.” He plunked a box of popsicles onto the windowsill. “Your text said strep?”
“Meet-and-greet at a school. Probably got it there.”
“When I got strep, my Aunt May made this ointment for my lymph nodes,” Peter One explained, offering a jar. “No menthol like all those store brands, it’s just camphor and chamomile.”
Huddling deeper into his afghan against the chilly outside air, he nodded wordless thanks and brought their gifts inside. The balm gave off strange notes of faintly floral mothballs, but it was pleasantly cool as he massaged it into his tender, swollen throat.
“You’ll be singing in the shower again before you know it—although, come to think of it, your singing voice isn’t much of an improvement from what you’ve got going now,” Three teased, earning a small huff and an eye roll as he shut the window.

Introducing Whumpcember 2022!
Everyone's heard of Whumptober or Febuwhump, Angstpril or Sicktember, but get ready for Whumpcember! Whumpcember is pretty much exactly like Whumptober or Febuwhump, except in December.
Whumpcember is born out of a love of monthly whump challenges but with zero time to complete them. I also want to complete these challenges, but never have the time! So I came to realize that, from an American perspective, December is the month I get the most time off. So, I decided to create this event for people who have too much time in December, but so little across the other 12 months. Of course, this is most definitely an American experience and not universal; so if you don't have free time during December it is still perfectly alright to participate! This event was just made to cure my December boredom, and anyone else's.
Now after that ramble, onto the actual rules:
Prompts should be answered with whump as the main focus (i'll let angst slide though, since it's similar enough to whump)
Fanfic! Gif! Text post! Fanart! Fan video! Any piece of media that you can possibly make that has whump counts!
You can use the prompts any time! Don't feel the need to rush
Though, prompts answered during December will most likely be reblogged
Post anywhere! AO3, Wattapad, Tumblr, or even Fanfic.Net! So as long as you make a Tumblr post with a link to the answered prompt it may be reblogged.
When posting onto Tumblr you can either @/ the blog or tag with #whumpcember2022 and the day's tag, such as #whumpcember2022 day1
Don't forget to add any warnings necessary, such as NSFW or sexual content
At the end of the month a masterpost will go out to all participants and a badge you can save stating that you are either a participant or completionist. In order to be on the masterpost though, you will have to fill out a google form at the end of month; don't worry it'll take two minutes!
I hope everyone has a fun time during the event! And if you have any questions shoot me an ask through the ask box!
(this is also my first year running this event, expect a hiccup or two)

Sicktember #26
Prompt: Pinkeye/Conjuntivitis ALL ALTS (Alt 1. “I Could Really Use a Hug Right About Now”//Alt 2. Fuzzy Socks//Alt 3. Pounding Headache//Alt 4. Forehead Kisses//Alt 5. “I’m so sorry”)
Fandom/OCs: OCs Shane and Molly (Doctor Nurse ‘verse?)
Words: 1180
Sicknario inspo: "Something happen at work?" from this post and "You look… I know…" from this post.
Author’s comments/background: Since I only had one space for an Alternate prompt this year, and they were all cute, I made it a mini challenge to use them all, and who better to do that for than Shane and Molly? I was pretty happy with the result, and this ended up being another piece that I was really looking forward to writing. I actually saved it for last as a reward for finishing the challenge. Have the usual married-people-who-are-crazy-about-each-other shenanigans. (Also some of the ending dialogue was shamelessly stolen from the D/ick Van D/yke show and I'm not sorry.)
Set the day after the events of “Without You” (read it here), which takes place within the first year of their marriage.
~~~***~~~
Molly was deep in thought about what Shane might like for dinner, so when she turned to find him walking through the door a full three hours earlier than usual, at first she thought she was imagining it. Their eyes met and, probably because she looked so shocked, he attempted a smile to put her at ease, but the obvious sickliness of him made her worry all the more instead.
"Shane! You're home early. Did something happen at work?"
"Hihh– hihhggIHHTCHHOO! IHHXXCHOO!... Ugh…"
"...Oh. I see. Yeah, I can definitely see. Wow, you look–"
“I know,” Shane mumbled, swallowing thickly as he massaged his temple. “I know… HihhxxEHHPTchuhh!! Oh my god," he groaned, pressing his hand even harder to his head. "I have had the worst pounding, splitting headache all day and the sneezing is NOT helping…."
"Aww, honey… why don't you sit down and take it easy for a while?"
"I will, but first… I know I'm contagious and everything but… I could really use a hug right about now." He dropped his bag and opened his arms imploringly.
"Oh, you poor thing, of course you can have a hug!" She hurried into his arms, squeezing him as tightly as she could, and he squeezed her back until her ribs cracked, his face buried against her neck.
"I had the most godawful day," he mumbled, sounding almost on the verge of tears. "I felt like shit and the staff were all crabby and being petty and the schedule was screwed up again and the patients were horrible. I just need to be home with you."
"My poor baby," she said, kissing his temple and neck and shoulder and every other bit of him that she could reach. Then she held on and squeezed tight, just the way he liked. They hugged for a long time.
"Are you cold, hon?" Molly asked after several minutes. She already knew the answer to that question since she could feel him shivering, but he was sagging most of his weight on her, and her hugging muscles were starting to get tired.
"Freezing," he murmured into her neck.
"Here, let's go sit down and wrap you up. You look exhausted."
"I'm that too," he agreed, letting himself be led to the couch. Molly quickly tucked a blanket around him, dress shirt and all, and he nestled into the cushions with a sniffling sigh. She perched right beside him.
"Do you think you have a fever?"
"I really don't know. This cold wasn't so bad before today. I have no idea."
Molly leaned forward, pressing the back of her hand to his forehead. It was hardly there a second when Shane twitched violently, bending forward in a half-stifled sneeze that clearly snuck up on him:
"Hihhgg-KXXT! XXTchhoo!!"
Molly was thoroughly caught in the spray. She carefully kept her expression neutral so as not to make him feel any worse as she turned away from his horrified look to wipe off the mist from her cheek and hand.
"Ohmygod, Mol… I am so sorry… I can't believe that just happened…."
Shane continued to stammer apologetically as Molly turned to face him again, stopping him with a gentle squeeze of his leg. "It's okay, love, really. I know you didn't mean to. It happens. No big deal. Now, let's try that again."
Shane fell silent, though his apologetic expression lingered, as Molly again reached out to feel his face. "You didn't sneeze on any patients today though, did you?" she asked, trying to lighten the mood with gentle teasing.
"No, thank god. That's about the only thing that didn't go wrong today."
"Well that's good," she said, pulling away. "And you're definitely warm. Feels like a fever to me."
"That tracks, to be honest"
"With what?"
"Everything, I guess. How crappy I feel, mainly. The rest of this awful day."
"My poor Shane," she groaned, going in for another hug. "I hate seeing you like this. I'm supposed to be the one that does all the complaining, not you."
"Sorry. But I was overdue for a turn," he mumbled into her chest.
"I dunno about all that. But we'll get you fixed up and back to normal either way." She released him, meeting his eyes again. "You pick the order of operations tonight. What do you want first, shower, dinner, blanket cuddles, or bed?"
A sleepy smile spread across Shane's face. "All the choices are too good. You pick. You're the boss tonight."
"You're either very brave or very sick to say such things, my love. But your wish is my command. We'll go in the order I listed them, I think. I can't stand to see my human furnace shivering so hard, so we'll start with a hot shower, and you can even have the brand new fuzzy socks you just bought me, since I know you can't resist fuzzy socks when you're sick."
Shane was grinning now. "As long as you shower with me. There's always a risk of syncope with a fever, you know. You can never be too careful, especially in the bathroom."
"Right you are. You read my mind. Don't you worry, I'll be keeping a close eye on you. Everyone knows doctors make the worst patients."
"Whatever you think is best, nurse," he said with a pathetic sniffle.
~~~
The couple settled into the rhythm of their evening routine, though they took it especially easy for Shane's sake and, true to her word, Molly hardly left his side. Shane was clingy and a little needy when he wasn't feeling well, but as long as she stayed within reach, he was in truth a very easy patient.
A few hours later found them curled up on the couch with takeout soup and salad for an early dinner, watching Shane's favorite, the Jurassic Park trilogy. They were lightly reclining, Shane leaning partially against Molly with a tissue box under his arm as she toyed with his blond curls. When she thought he was distracted, she leaned over to press her lips to his forehead.
Shane was sharp, though, and eyed her with a curious look. "Was that for affection or were you checking my temperature again?"
"Sick person forehead kisses are always both, you should know that. Your eyes are looking funny, so I was seeing if it was worth it to get up and get you medicine or not."
"I'm okay. You don't need to do that."
"Hey, I warned you that I'd be keeping an eye on you. This is part of the package, mister."
"I know, I know," he chuckled, scrubbing at his nose. "But I don't want you to get up. I'm too comfortable, and I haven't been able to say that since you left for your trip. You're not allowed to move. Sick person orders."
"Aye aye, sir." Molly resumed playing with his hair, and Shane sighed in contentment.
"What would I do without you?" he murmured, echoing back to the day before.
"I promise you'll never have to find out as long as I'm living," she whispered back, pulling him closer against her.

“Oh, I should have stayed home today...” Luigi moaned, frowning at himself in the mirror of the dressing room.
Actually, he should have stayed home yesterday. Maybe then he wouldn't have volunteered to do this. But since he’d done so, there was no way he could have stayed home today, even if he very much wanted to. Peach was counting on him!
Luigi examined his reflection. He adjusted his wig. Some of the blond strands tickled his nose, and he sneezed.
His task today was simple, all things considered: go out there to the party in place of Peach, give the rousing and thoughtful speech she’d written and he’d spent half the night memorizing to the gathered Toads and rolling cameras, and then he could go back inside and cry as much as he wanted from the stress of it all! Easy!
Luigi put on a face mask, hiding his mustache. He inspected his reflection one last time. He winked at himself in the mirror, making finger-guns with his hands. Easy!
...Yet his stomach twisted and knotted and rolled and flipped. Luigi wished he’d had breakfast; he’d been so anxious about today that he’d hardly eaten anything, and that certainly didn't pair well with the stress weighing down on him.
From beyond the door, Toadsworth called for him. Luigi swept up the pink skirts of his borrowed dress and exited the room. With a quick circle around Luigi to make sure not a hair was out of place, and a nod at the lack of faults in his disguise, Toadsworth led Luigi down the hall. With each step, Luigi only got more and more anxious. What if everything went wrong, and he was found out? What if he let Peach down, and she never spoke to him again? What if his foot started to itch, and he couldn't scratch it?
In front of the doors leading outside stood Mario, waiting to walk out with him. Seeing the look on Luigi’s face, though, Mario hurried forward to press his forehead against his brother’s, coaxing him to take some deep breaths.
“...I hope this isn't ruining the makeup,” Luigi fretted, and that was Mario’s cue to pull away, chuckling as he did so. He squeezed Luigi’s shoulders. Luigi tentatively smiled back.
Mario held out the crook of his arm. Luigi slotted an opera-gloved hand into it. Together they walked outside to the pavilion, Luigi humming under his breath to test his voice. Mario smiled encouragingly at him when he landed on the right tones to match Peach’s.
Toadsworth stepped up to the podium to quiet the gathered Toads. When there was finally nothing but the chirping of birds and the rustling of flowers and leaves, Mario and Luigi stepped up, to a smattering of applause. With one last squeeze to Luigi’s hand, Mario stepped to the side and backwards, leaving Luigi by himself up front. Luigi stood up straight. He cleared his throat. He took a deep breath. With Mario’s steady presence at his elbow, he began to speak.
---
Luigi barely made it off the stage and out of sight of the party guests, Mario’s hand on his back being the only thing keeping him upright and moving by a small margin. He all but collapsed into the nearest chair, weak-kneed. “I...” He swallowed. “I...did it?”
Mario beamed at him, jostling him with an enthusiastic thump to the shoulder.
“You did it!” Peach ran up to them, wearing a face mask of her own. She looked a lot better than she had yesterday. She threw her arms around Luigi, almost knocking the crown off his head. “Thank you, thank you!”
“Heh, it’s no problem!” Luigi hugged her back more tiredly. “I just gotta...sit here a while...”
Peach laughed. “Well, when you’re done sitting, feel free to change and come out to join the party!”
“Sure thing!” Luigi replied with a thumbs up. Just as soon as this terrible feeling in his gut went away, he didn't add. Peach grinned at him one last time before she swept away to take his place (her place?) mingling with the Toads.
After a few minutes, that terrible feeling lessened enough for Luigi to get up again. He waved Mario off, telling him to go out and sample the buffet table already instead of wasting time waiting for him. He’d been looking forward to it, after all. With a touch of reluctance, Mario did so.
Luigi made his way back to the room in which he’d gotten ready for the speech. Along the way, he stumbled a bit, the lack of food and sleep catching up with him. Even though today’s stressful moment was over, his body still hadn't gotten the memo, apparently. But after only one or two more pauses to lean against the wall, he made it to the room. He changed back to his regular clothes, and as he was taking out his earrings there was a knock at the door. Luigi opened it and Mario was standing there.  “Mario,” Luigi huffed. “What are you doing here?”
Mario held a plate up to Luigi. It was piled high with food from the buffet table. Luigi took the plate from him, looking down at everything Mario had brought. He wanted to eat it, but...
“I...don't think I’m hungry...?”
Mario frowned at him, disbelieving. He convinced Luigi to eat some of the food he’d brought, at least, the biscuits and bread and crackers. Doing so made Luigi feel a tiny bit better.
Together, Mario and Luigi stepped outside. They were very quickly swept up into the festivities, and at some point, between one blink and the next, they got separated — Mario wandered off to hang around the buffet table again, and Luigi chatted with a group of older ladies nearby. In the middle of a conversation about the rose bushes they were standing next to, Luigi started to feel unwell again. Plastering a smile on his face to hide the grimace threatening to overtake it, he excused himself from the conversation as quickly as he could with a promise to catch up later and wandered off further into the gardens.
Mario found him there, as did Peach, with his head in his knees and a stomach that still hadn't gotten the memo that everything was over, even now. Peach was saying something to him, and then to Mario, but Luigi was too focused on breathing through his discomfort to hear her.
Mario waved something jingling in front of Luigi’s face. It was the keys to Luigi’s kart.
“You can't drive,” Luigi mumbled in protest, despite him currently being an even less valid candidate for the driver's seat. Mario knew it too, rolling his eyes and helping Luigi to his feet.
Luigi gasped, clutching his stomach as the world spun around him. Mario caught him against his side as he teetered. Eyes squeezed shut, Luigi more felt than saw Peach dart in to plant a kiss near his temple, her healing magic washing through him and setting the world to rights. Luigi smiled at Peach in thanks, and she returned it with a smile that barely reached her eyes.
“Get home safe,” she bade them. “I’m so sorry about this.”
“’s not your fault.” Luigi reached out to squeeze her hand. “Just need rest, probably. You should go back to the party before the Toads start freaking out.”
“If you’re sure,” Peach said, and Mario nodded, pulling Luigi closer to him and giving Peach a thumbs up. Luigi added an albeit weaker smile to the reassuring image, and together they managed to ease Peach’s frown some and turn it a little upside-down.
With a final goodbye and one last worried glance to the both of them, Peach disappeared amongst the flowers. Mario and Luigi left in the other direction, down a hidden path that would take them to Luigi’s kart without being seen. Luigi sighed tremulously as Mario eased him into the backseat. Now all he had to do was survive the trip home...

READ BEFORE INTERACTING
Hello and welcome!
Following the announcement that the official sicktember event runners would only be posting a set number of fills per day, I sought permission to curate a blog of my own where I did my best to offer an alternate option, closer to how the fills were promoted before.
Previously, the mods of the event would reblog/promote every fill that was posted. Many people, it seems, were not a fan of this influx of fills being spilled onto their dash, understandably so. I, however, loved that, and am very sad to see it go.
So! I made this blog for myself and for anyone else who might want a place to peruse every fill. This blog will contain every sicktember fill for 2023 I can get my hands on, and I will be tagging fandoms accordingly and to the best of my ability!
I am not affiliated with the mods of sicktember. I am just a HUGE fan of their event who asked them permission to do this so people could have an alternate option and a wide range of fics to read all in one convenient place. I totally respect and understand their decision, and I am super grateful they were cool with me doing this.
Please direct any and all questions about the event itself to @sicktember! And please read their FAQ to keep yourself up to speed on rules and regulations, as all other rules will apply to this blog, as well.

Very late to the party - one final prompt fill from the @sicktember 2022 stable.
Missing in Action - Alt. 5. ‘Can You Be Brave For Me?’
The sound of the air raid siren as they’d been pedalling home was not the worst timing Evangelina thought, even as she picked up her pace.
“We’re close enough to Nonnatus,” she said, turning over her shoulder to speak to Julienne who was following closely behind. The younger woman nodded, and Evangelina noted that the long labour, which Evangelina had only come in at the end of, had clearly tired her. Still, they didn’t have any choice but to head flat out for home. She could hear the aeroplanes overhead by the time she was dismounting and was momentarily irritated that Julienne hadn’t kept up. With a frustrated sigh, she lifted her bike, case and all, and carried it up the steps. While Nonnatuns’ bicycles were left well alone by thieves, there was a greater chance of them being damaged by flying debris outside than inside.
Evangelina abandoned her bicycle next to the others and headed through to the cloisters that lead to the garden.  She made it as far as the door to one of the Anderson shelters before she stopped with her hand on the handle, turning back and expecting to see Julienne appear from inside. Where had she gotten to?!

10. ‘Can You Be Brave For Me? (Alt. Prompt 5)
@sicktember
As soon as Finn had seen the letter, he'd been panicking. He'd tried everything to get out of it, even asked Steve to not do the scan, so desperately it was almost begging.
Fao hated it when Finn got upset. He loved his little brother, hated seeing him struggling. He knew he hated hospitals, hated appointments, definitely hated scans.
All his begging fell on deaf ears, and his scan loomed. He ended up staying off school, his absences having kept everyone up. He was allowed a lie in, too, to try and stave off any further seizures. Besides, the longer he was asleep meant that they had less time for arguments and his escapee tactics.
As per usual, it fell to Fao to take Finn to his appointment. With Sheila busy and Fred working, he had a gap in lectures that meant he could take his brother. Sheila always said Finn was better with him in hospital, anyway.
They’d given Finn his day off, sleeping in late in the hopes to stop the seizures. Fao hated it, but it was what it was. Hopefully the scan would just be routine, nothing to fuss over. Steve had insisted it was needed, that there was no getting out of it, and when Fao showed up at the house that afternoon he knew there was going to be drama.
Sheila was glad to see Fao, grateful for the reprieve from Finn. She didn't manage to stay long, just enough to make sure Finn was still in the house and not immediately about to run. There was a rushed apology to Fao, and then she was gone.
They didn’t have long until they needed to leave. Fao knew he ought to get Finn ready, given how long he knew it would take.
“Finn?”
He emerged slowly, Finn drowning in one of Fao's hoodies. "What?"
“How you doing?”
"I'm sick. I can’t go."
Fao frowned. “Sick?”
"Yeah."
“How are you sick? A cold?”
"Just sick." He huffed.
“Been sick?”
"Do I have to go if I have been?"
“Just tell me the truth, yeah?”
"Give me five minutes." Finn said, turning on his heel.
“Five minutes for what, Finn?”
"To not lie to you!"
Fao followed his brother, reaching for his shoulder. “Come on, now. It’s alright to be scared.”
Finn shrugged out of his grasp. "I'm not scared!"
“No? I’d be scared.”
"You wouldn't."
“Of course I would. Always am, in hospitals.”
"But you're big and brave."
“I still get scared.”
"You don't."
“I do.” Fao said. “But sometimes when you’re scared, you have to be brave and face your fear. And then afterwards, it doesn’t seem so bad.”
He screwed his face up. "I can try and be brave. But only if you're there."
“Of course I’ll be there, don’t be daft. I’m always there.”
Finn looked up at him, small and scared. "Promise?"
“Promise. They might not let me come in the room with the scanner, but I'll be right there waiting for you on the other side of the doors.”
Finn stepped forward, closing the gap between him and his brother. The height difference was still stark, Finn's arms barely wrapping around his brother’s stomach. He rested his head against Fao's chest, feeling better for just being near him.
Unfortunately, they couldn't stay like that forever, and they had to leave for Finn's appointment. Finn was reluctant, still scared about the scan. He did his best to be brave, and got into the car with minimal fuss. Despite pretending he was too old, he still clutched Lion to his chest, fiddling with his ear.
Fao let Finn fiddle, lion a staple  comforter for him. It was sweet, really. It didn't take them long to get to the hospital, and eventually Fao found somewhere to park and pulled in. Would he be able to convince his brother to get out of the car? They were early, at least, and they had time before they needed to be inside.
Finn didn't move as they pulled in, his feet resting on the edge of the seat, his arms wrapped around himself. He didn't want to move, terrified to the bone. His hands shook despite gripping onto each other, the so many months of medical trauma all too fresh in his mind.
"You ready, kiddo? Sooner we get in, sooner we get out."
Finn shook his head. "I don't want to go."
"Yeah, I know. It's not nice, but it's just a scan. You've had loads before, they don't hurt, just a bit noisy."
He hummed. Fao wasn't lying, he knew that, but it almost trivialised the entire situation. "Can we just go home? Please?"
"Afraid not."
Finn was eventually convinced out of the car, Fao standing at the opened car door. He immediately took Fao's hand, gripping it as tight as he could. They made their way inside, and then through the maze of corridors Finn still felt lost in.
Unfortunately for Finn, it didn't take long to get to the radiography department. He felt sick and wanted to bolt. Fao must have felt it, as he held Finn's hand tighter, determined to not allow his brother to escape. It wouldn't have been the first time, or the last.
The wait for his name felt like an eternity, Finn filled with nervous energy. He was annoying Fao with his fidgeting, and had smacked him more than once with his myos. His absences were rife, too, but Fao gave him time and waited for him to come back.
"Finn Daniels?" The radiographer called. "Do you want to come through?"
Finn didn't move, his heart pounding in his chest. He stayed sat as Fao stood, letting his older brother tug his hand to try to get him to move. Confronted by the reality of the upcoming scan, he just couldn't. He couldn’t breathe, couldn't think, couldn't move.
Fao didn't miss the flash of panic in Finn’s eyes, or the way his hand trembled in his. He crouched down in front of his brother.
"Hey. Finn, look at me?" He said softly. "Remember what I said about being brave? And how after, it won't seem too bad? Can you do that for me? Can you be brave for me?"
Finn shook his head. "I don't think I can."
"You can, Finn. I know you can. You've done so much already, this is just a little scan. You can do this."
Finn was coaxed from his seat and then mainly dragged to the scanner. He was allowed to keep Lion, and Fao chatted through the tinny earphones as soon as he could. There was a little rendition of les mis, which made Finn smile, and then it was over.
Fao met Finn at the doors, his brother immediately wrapping himself around him. He ruffled his hair affectionately before crouching in front of him.
"Well done, Finn. You were so brave, I'm so proud of you."
Finn's eyes were wide. "You are?"
"Of course I am! Come on, let's go. We'll get a McDonald's on the way home, eh? My treat, but you can't tell mum."
"Really?" Finn's face lit up. "And ice cream?"
Fao laughed. "Yeah, Finn. And ice cream."
