Superego
It was just a machine, the burnt body that lay beside the hybrid tank. It's what he believed to be true. And yet, Clark could not help but wonder if he had just committed murder.
And for a man that would not have thought twice about it.
He knelt down beside Lionel, his own morals warring with his desire to leave the man to his fate. But his parents had brought him up to be merciful toward others regardless of who they were.
“You’re lucky I’m doing this for Julian,” Clark muttered while lifting the naked human from the tank.

Dream Girl
Pairing: Poly!141 x AFAB/fem!reader
Warnings: Light suggestiveness, pining, fluff, teasing, light language, reader wears outfits inspired by their childhood crushes, mild kissing, strong romantic tones
Author's Note: This was such a joy to write—thank you for the darling idea. I hope it came out as good as you hoped!!
Summary: On a lazy rainy Sunday, you decided to surprise each of her boys by dressing up as the women who stole their hearts during childhood. What starts as a playful gift turns into something a lot more tender.

The rain hasn’t stopped all morning. It taps softly on the windows of your shared quarters, a soothing rhythm that makes the whole place feel like a slow, sleepy dream. The air smells like coffee and warm laundry, and somewhere in the rec room, you can hear the faint hum of a kettle.
The boys are scattered, relaxed. Sunday is sacred—no training, no briefings, no missions.
You’ve been planning this for weeks.
A little mischief. A lot of love. And just enough nostalgia to knock the breath out of each of them.
You’ve already told them you’d be “trying on outfits” today. You left out which ones.
THE CAPTAIN AND THE CROFT
You walk into the lounge first, boots heavy, hips swaying. The tank top clings to you in all the right ways. Cargo shorts ride high on your thighs, and the toy gun holsters bounce slightly with each step.
John looks up from his newspaper—classic, worn, and full of half-finished crosswords.
His eyes drag over you.
He doesn’t say a word. Not right away.
You walk to the center of the room and strike a pose, one hand resting on your belt, the other adjusting your braid.
“Well?” you smirk. “Got any ancient tombs that need exploring?”
John exhales through his nose, the paper forgotten. “Lara bloody Croft,” he mutters, voice gravelly. “Are you trying to make me short-circuit, love?”
You grin and strut closer, dropping into his lap. His arms wrap around you instantly, hands warm on your bare thighs.
“I wanted to give you something fun. Something for you.” You lean in, lips brushing his ear. “Remember the VHS tapes you said you wore out when you were fourteen?”
His laughter is warm, chesty, completely smitten. “You really are somethin’ else.”
“Say it,” you whisper.
He grins against your cheek. “You’re my dream girl, love. Always have been.”
GHOSTS OF CHILDHOOD PAST
Next stop: the armory. You ditch the tank top for a bright yellow cropped jacket, a fake news badge clipped to your chest. Your hair’s styled in soft waves, and you carry a cheap mic like it’s a weapon.
Simon’s alone, gloves on, doing a casual clean of his knives. The fluorescent lights buzz quietly overhead.
You lean in the doorway.
“This is April O’Neil, reporting live,” you say, voice smooth. “Today we bring you exclusive coverage of the most mysterious man on base.”
Simon stills. Knife mid-polish.
Slowly, his head lifts.
You step forward, hips swaying, mic tapping against your chin.
He sets the blade down with exaggerated care. “You can’t be serious.”
“I’m always serious, Simon.”
He stands fully now, towering and solid, eyes flicking over every detail of your outfit. His expression is unreadable—but his ears are red.
“April was my first crush,” he mutters, voice low, nearly reverent. “I wanted to be one of the turtles just so she’d notice me.”
You grin, hands curling into his vest. “You think she’d notice you now?”
He huffs a soft laugh and tips your chin up. “She’d fall to her knees.”
You blush, heart thundering.
And when he lifts the bottom of his mask just enough to kiss you—soft, slow, careful—you melt like butter in his hands.
SAVE THE WORLD, GET THE GUY
“Johnny,” you call sweetly as you step into the rec room again, “what’s the sitch?”
He looks up from the couch and immediately gasps like he’s seen a ghost—and maybe he has.
“Love, Jesus Christ,” he groans, sitting up straighter. “Is that—are you—Kim Possible?!”
You spin for him dramatically, gloves fitted tight, olive-green cargos hugging your curves. “Ron’s on leave. I’m handling missions solo today.”
He scrambles to his feet and rushes toward you, practically vibrating. “This isn’t fair. You know what you’re doin’ to me, lass.”
“Remind me?”
“You’re everything I wanted at thirteen and everything I want now in one body.”
You laugh as he sweeps you off your feet, spinning you like you weigh nothing. He presses you to the wall gently, nose brushing yours, forehead resting against you.
“Call me, beep me,” he whispers, voice low and hot, “if you wanna wreck me.”
PRETTY GUARDIAN POWER
You save Kyle for last—because his reaction is going to be the best.
You slip into the quarters where he’s reading, hoodie draped over his lap. He doesn’t see you at first.
Then you clear your throat and say in your brightest voice: “In the name of the moon, I will punish you!”
Kyle looks up—and freezes.
Full Sailor Scout getup. Skirt, gloves, red bows, fake tiara glittering on your forehead. You pose with your hands on your hips, your grin wide.
He drops his book.
“No way,” he whispers, eyes wide.
“Surprised?” you tease.
“You’re gonna give me a heart attack, babe.” He stands, walking slowly, reverently, like he can’t believe you’re real. “Sailor Moon?”
“I heard Sailor Jupiter was your girl.”
“She was. Tall. Tough. Gorgeous.” He stops in front of you, gaze warm. “But I think she just got replaced.”
You giggle as he lifts you into his arms, bridal style, spinning you toward the bed. “What are you doing?” you laugh.
“Dream-fulfillment service,” he teases. “Full package.”
Later, you’re curled up on the oversized couch you all had delivered after your last mission. You’re tucked between Simon’s solid chest and Kyle’s warm arm, your legs draped across Johnny’s lap. John’s hand rests on your knee, fingers brushing gently.
“You are ridiculous,” Simon mutters—but he can’t stop smiling.
“Ridiculously hot,” Johnny corrects, dropping a kiss on your ankle.
John chuckles. “I’m just impressed you remembered the details.”
“I remember everything about you boys,” you say softly.
Kyle leans in, his voice gentle. “You really wanted to make us feel special.”
“I always do.”
There’s a moment of silence. Warmth. Shared glances. Then, in perfect harmony, they lean in—kissing your cheeks, your forehead, your lips—until you’re breathless and giggling and entirely, completely theirs.

hello! u can call me Angel! I use any pronouns, though I do lean more toward they/them and neos (might make a list of some of the neos I like to use later), I am a minor (I feel uncomfortable about revealing my exact age, sorry)!
my favourite books, book series, and mangas include: aftg, trc, good omens, Komi can’t communicate, the Simon Snow series/carry on, lotr, sailor moon, danaganronpa, the regency fairytales, Cemetary boys, heartstopper, the Osemanverse, the perks of being a wallflower, and the lonely hearts hotel (there’s probably more that I’m forgetting)!
my favourite authors include (I base these on their writing and not their actions, Neil Gaiman anyways): Alice Oseman, Neil Gaiman, Nora Sakavic, Rainbow Rowell, Aiden Thomas, Heather O’Neill, Harry Potter (I do not support J.K. Rowling) and Maggie Stiefvater (again, there’s probably more that I’m forgetting)!
my favourite book/books series/manga characters are: Renee Walker, Andrew Minyard, Jean Moreau, Ronan Lynch, Mikan Tsumiki, Noah Czerny, Charlie Kelmeckis, Jeremy Knox, Luna Lovegood, and Remus Lupin (once again, there’s probably more that I’m forgetting)!
I’m looking for friends who r around my age (13-17), I’m a little shy at first but I am a chronic yapper in hiding (I promise), just very nervous around people. my dms are always open if u wanna yap to and/or with me! also, I have adhd, autism, possible bpd and/or bipolar, prosopagnosia, asthma, i have arfid and eat via feeding tube, I am a cane user (visually impaired), and I also suffer from chronic pain (suspected to be POTS and ehler danlos syndrome)!

In celebration of 7000 comics logged on LOCG I pulled my stats.
Tumblr media
Firstly my breakdown of what I’ve been reading. Still mostly DC, though Image is close to catching Marvel.
My top 10 writers has again shifted:
Tumblr media
Tynion has jumped ahead of Vaughan, which makes sense as I’ve been working on his indie stuff.
Dennis O’Neil is a new entry/return to the top 10, via reading way too much Azrael. King’s jumped Simone but I’m currently working on getting her back ahead; will be there by the end of the day actually.
And Tomasi and Williamson swapped spots. I need to get Williamson back out of my top 10 (I mean. I have plenty of EVIDENCE on my side for my frustration with him)
Top Characters is pretty similar to normal:
Tumblr media
Very little change here, Selina just entered the top ten, pushing Dinah to eleventh.
Also I note I do need to get back to my Wonder Woman read so she can pass Joker.

'A playful thought came to mind watching Andrew Scott (Sherlock on PBS) in his fascinating one-man adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya.  Slightly updated, its title shortened to Vanya, this two-hour showcase of bravura acting came perilously close to French farce territory with all the male characters dithering in various states of sexual expectancy about one female character.
What in other productions, such as last year’s Lincoln Center Theatre staging, is portrayed as substantially darker here bordered on the droll, enhanced by James Farncombe’s bright lighting design and Scott’s breezy acting style.
Tumblr media
The object of these fellows’ passion is the gorgeous Helena (Yelena in the original). Pheromones waft through the Lucille Lortel Theatre as Scott races about the stage, disappearing behind a closet only to emerge as yet another character.  (The utilitarian set by Rosanna Vize also includes a large mirror giving the audience a glimpse of itself thus becoming another character in Vanya.)
After a bit of fourth wall foreplay, Vanya, here called Ivan, sits and complains about his life spent toiling on the large estate in the Russian countryside, once owned by his late, lamented sister Vera (now Anna). Ivan is in a chronically sardonic mood, constantly moaning over his fate, moodiness that leads to a surprisingly frenetic finale when bad news threatens all the characters.
Alexander, Anna’s widower, is an aging has-been film maker.  (In Uncle Vanya, he is a pompous, entitled, over-the-hill professsor who hasn’t published for decades.)  Helena is his much younger second wife.  It is she who stimulates the hormones of the males on the farm and is the object of Sonia’s envy. The woebegone daughter of Anna and Alexander, poor Sonia has a deep crush on Michael, the doctor who comes frequently to the estate to deal with Alexander’s mostly imaginary maladies.
Tumblr media
The real reason Michael makes the arduous journey to the countryside is to be close to Helena. He is the only one to actually make love to her in a brilliant scene that is both hilarious and sensual.  How Scott manages this has to be seen.
All told Scott impersonates nine characters. He is sometimes subtle, sometimes over-the-top, always fascinating, particularly as Helena who, in Scott’s nimble interpretation, slowly morphs into the complex woman written by Chekhov, almost the conscience of the play. She tries to advise Sonia who is unrequitedly in love with Michael.   To Ivan, she is an attractive nuisance.  Scott manages to communicate all of this.
Tumblr media
In 2017 David Greenspan similarly performed a one-person version of a multi-character play.  In his case it was Eugene O’Neill’s Strange Interlude, perhaps a harder nut to crack, but another illustration of the inventiveness of great actors.  Scott joins an elite club.
Natalie Pryce is credited with the costumes: a casually unbuttoned teal-colored shirt and loose, pale pants both of which consistent with Scott’s performance style. (Physicality, whatever that means, is credited to Michela Meazza.)
Scott was also aided by the easy-on-the-ear adaptation of the original by Tony Award-winning British playwright Simon Stephens and Sam Yates’ collaborative direction. Vanya, is, of course, more than a fresh interpretation of a classic play. It is an event and one that shouldn’t be missed.'

Here’s a little intro to my TMNT X ANIMAL CROSSING “au” there’s an island attached to this, so l’ll share the dream address. But here’s the master post
WELCOME TO HIDEOUT! A town made from the remains of New York City, for mutants and mutant ally’s. Walk around! You’ll find amazing restaurants and beautiful cites!
OUR STORY
back in the day, HideOut was a city full of humans. However, most of them were wiped out by creatures called “Kraang.” Only leaving mutants and a few humans. However, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles made a new city, us!
RESIDENTS
HUMANS
Casey Jones (named Raph on my save- oops): Casey Jones was one of the founders of the island, having fought along the ninja turtles. He’s often seen assisting fellow residents.
April O’Neil: A very helpful guide! April O’Neil is always willingly to assist you if anything goes wrong! She’s got powers too!
Baxter Stockman: he’s been missing for some time. We don’t know where he went.
MUTANTS
Hazel: She’s been living here since the founding of the island, she’s a mutant squirrel. Really nice, if April or Casey aren’t available, please go ask her for assistance!
Simon: A cute monkey who’s always out fishing! He’s our local fish expert, got a fish question? He’s your guy! Spike: A rhino who looks mean, but is actually a really nice guy! He works at our gym, making sure everyone is healthy!
Purrl: Purrl used to be an ice cream cat called “Ice Cream Kitty”, but now (thanks to further mutantion) is stable outside a freezer! She now helps new comers!
Henry: Henry’s the child of a mutant frog from an alternate universe, we legitimately don’t know where he came from. However, he’s smug.
Lucky: Lucky used to be Casey Jones childhood dog, well before he died. Then he came back to life thanks to a spill! Hes extremely shy.
Snake: Ex-Foot Clan member. He was mutated whit his pet Rabbit. He’s still trying to heal from the trauma he induced from the foot clan.
Stella: She’s a goat, and the mother of the island. She’ll often bring you food right to your door step!
Bertha: She’s a hippo who’s always kind and cheery! She’s the town’s therapist!
Rasher: He was an experiment by Baxter stockman, he wanted to see what would happen if he combined Bebop and Rocksteadys DNA. So he’s basically their “child”, in a way. Really cracky however.
we have other residents, who would like to stay anonymous.
Why us?
well, we’re a save haven for both mutant and human. We have lots of services, like food and disability aid, which insures every single person has a home and a stable environment to trive.

Note
any chance of an updated list?
Of course!!
Also, this is the NEW and FUCKING IMPROVED LIST, I alphabetized it so it’s even better than before >:3
Currently, we have 340 unique characters (if I counted right) and 487 total submissions. The top three most submitted fandoms are Homestuck, Danganronpa, and One Piece, excluding submissions that were spelt wrong or spelt differently. The top three submitted characters are Haiji Towa, Vriska Serket, and Stella Goeta (stella has so many submissions it’s funny)!
Finally, this is the raw, unedited list of characters submitted so far. Just because they are here doesn’t mean they’ll be in the tournament; it just means they’ve been submitted, regardless of media or what character they are!
as always, list under the cut!
This first list is for characters with two or more submissions. Characters who have three or more submissions will get first dibs in the tournament!

Sneak
Sneaking through the basestar had been a lot easier than he had expected. Clark seemed to know exactly when to avoid patrolling centurions or skin jobs. He had always known he was different, but this? This was beyond anything he could explain.
Quietly approaching, he could hear two skin jobs talk. He turned his head to listen better.
”I am surprised the AI hasn't driven the human mad.”
“As I said, he is proving to be quite resilient.”
”Can you extract the programme?”
”It will kill the subject.”
”And?”
”I will begin once he has had time to rest then.”

DUBLIN — Letters of reference for a pedophile press officer. Allegations of censorship and criminal misdeeds. Lawmakers blasting party leaders in resignation statements. And a senator pestering a teenage boy with flirty texts.
It’s been a nightmare October for Sinn Féin, the Irish republican opposition party that has long hoped to lead the next government in Dublin. And the timing of its troubles couldn’t be worse, with a snap election expected to be called before Halloween.
The crisis is raising serious questions about the political survival of Mary Lou McDonald, the Dubliner handpicked by Sinn Féin’s previous leader, Gerry Adams, to take the Northern Ireland-rooted party from the political fringe into power for the first time in the Republic of Ireland.
Ever since drawing level with Ireland’s governing center-ground parties at the last general election in 2020, Sinn Féin had confidently billed McDonald as the nation’s prime minister in waiting. But that confidence, already shaken by poor results in other elections this summer, has evaporated amid a barrage of self-inflicted wounds.
McDonald spent Tuesday afternoon in Dáil Éireann, Ireland’s key lower house of parliament, mounting a defense of Sinn Féin’s handling of two scandals and a pair of surprise resignations. But her explanations left key questions unanswered and spurred new accusations that she had deliberately misled parliament about how much she knew, and when.
The widening scope of the debate illustrated just how quickly Sinn Féin’s internal problems have multiplied. When the government of Prime Minister Simon Harris sought to use the debate last week as a vehicle for attacking Sinn Féin, only one of the four controversies was out in the open.
There’s so much to unpack.
Reputational damage
Initially, McDonald’s Dublin headquarters sought to confine the reputational damage to Sinn Féin’s operations across the border in Northern Ireland, the party’s traditional U.K. power base, where it already leads a cross-community government under First Minister Michelle O’Neill, Sinn Féin’s deputy leader. It was there that the first scandal surfaced last month, when the party’s former press officer Michael McMonagle pleaded guilty to 14 counts of soliciting sex with children.
McMonagle had spent eight years working in various Sinn Féin roles at Stormont, the seat of Northern Ireland’s devolved government, including within the legislative office of O’Neill in 2020.
Sinn Féin officials had known about the police investigation into McMonagle’s behavior for three years. He was quietly fired — but two party colleagues, including Sinn Fein’s top spin doctor at Stormont, wrote him letters of recommendation to land a new gig at an unwitting charity, the British Heart Foundation.
When journalists started asking questions after McMonagle’s guilty plea and got wind of the recommendations, Sinn Féin pushed both letter writers to resign, denied any knowledge at the top that the party had recommended McMonagle, and accused the British Heart Foundation of failing to conduct due diligence.
O’Neill faced a Stormont grilling over the affair. She apologized to the British Heart Foundation — but struggled to explain how she couldn’t have known about McMonagle’s new job, given she was pictured standing in front of him at a Stormont event last year. O’Neill insisted she never noticed him.
Although Sinn Féin is the only party contesting elections in both parts of Ireland, its Dublin and Belfast operations are largely partitioned — and McDonald had hoped, for damage-limitation purposes, to keep it that way.
She stayed silent on McMonagle until the eve of O’Neill’s Stormont questioning, then announced a root-and-branch review of Sinn Féin’s internal structures under a newly appointed general secretary.
“There must always be accountability for wrongdoing,” McDonald vowed. “I am committed to ensuring that an incident like this is never repeated again.”
Losing control of the narrative
That bid to take back control of the narrative didn’t survive the weekend.
In Kildare, a commuter county southwest of Dublin, Sinn Féin lawmaker Patricia Ryan announced she was quitting Sinn Féin and would run against the party as an independent.
She accused backroom party managers of vetting her social media posts, suppressing her constituents’ views on a local encampment of asylum seekers, and trying to block critical questions from the floor when McDonald paid her Kildare constituency a visit. At least 10 local members, including the party chair and secretary, joined Ryan in resigning.
While Sinn Féin was still knocking down Ryan’s accusations, a bigger figure took aim at the party as he too quit in bitterly disputed circumstances.
Brian Stanley was one of Sinn Féin’s most high-profile lawmakers in his role as chair of the most powerful parliamentary committee, Public Accounts, which pursues waste and wrongdoing in state-funded bodies. He accused Sinn Féin chiefs of scheming to ruin his good name in a “kangaroo court” designed to prevent him from standing for re-election.
Hours after Stanley’s resignation Saturday afternoon, Sinn Féin said it had referred evidence of wrongdoing against Stanley to Ireland’s national police force. Since then each side has dared the other to explain, in public, what exactly Stanley has been accused of.
“Brian is obviously in a difficult spot. He is lashing out,” said Pearse Doherty, Sinn Féin’s shadow finance minister. “We have not put the details of the complaint into the public record. It is for Brian to come forward and to be transparent if he so wishes.”
Posing a challenge
McDonald offered vague details in her parliamentary defense of Sinn Féin’s performance, saying a woman had complained of ill treatment by Stanley in October 2023 that had left her feeling “traumatized and distressed.” She insisted that Sinn Féin had nonetheless been right to leave Stanley in charge of the Public Accounts Committee until Monday, when he was sacked as chair.
Since his resignation, Stanley has refused all interview requests, instead issuing a string of statements through a lawyer accusing McDonald of abusing parliamentary privilege to smear him following “days of inaccurate statements and insinuations from Sinn Féin, along with selective briefings delivered with the clear intention of damaging my reputation and to shift the spotlight off the party.”
Stanley, too, has vowed to run against Sinn Féin as an independent in the midlands county of Laois, where the party currently has only one other elected official, sitting on the local council — Stanley’s wife.
The biggest damage to McDonald may have come during Tuesday’s Dáil debate, when the identity of a sex pest texter in Sinn Féin ranks was finally revealed — and it emerged McDonald herself had given the transgressor a salutary sendoff.
Niall Ó Donnghaile, a former mayor of Belfast, was Sinn Féin’s leader in Ireland’s upper house of parliament, the Seanad, until December 2023 — when McDonald issued a press statement praising his work record and wishing the 39-year-old success in battling unspecified “health challenges.”
Sinn Féin has now deleted that statement from its platforms, just as Ó Donnghaile shut down his social media pages Tuesday after admitting he’d pestered a 17-year-old boy by text after the two went canvassing for Sinn Féin votes.
The teenager had complained to Sinn Féin about messages McDonald described as “unwanted and inappropriate.” This was the real reason Ó Donnghaile had resigned, she admitted during the debate.
Defending the indefensible
The Sinn Féin boss defended the decision to stand by him by claiming there were concerns about Ó Donnghaile’s mental health, suggesting he was a suicide risk.
The government and other opposition leaders argued that McDonald shouldn’t have put out a cover story for his political exit. They noted that as with all the other problems, Sinn Féin had only come clean once journalists began investigating or resigning lawmakers cried foul.
Foreign Minister Micheál Martin, leader of the other major party in Ireland’s coalition government, Fianna Fáil, accused McDonald of deliberately misleading parliament — an act that, in government, would merit her resignation.
“The party’s track record of concealment and secrecy is shocking,” he said, listing three earlier cover-ups, including the child rape committed by Gerry Adams’ brother Liam, who died in prison in 2013.
“It is clear Sinn Féin again failed to tell the truth on a very serious matter and seem to have been involved in a very elaborate cover-up,” said Martin, who officially wants the government to run its full five-year term through March but has already had his election posters printed.
The government parties appear in strong position to capitalize on Sinn Féin’s five-year low in opinion polls in the Republic of Ireland.
POLITICO’s Poll of Polls puts Sinn Féin level with Martin’s Fianna Fáil on 19 percent, while Harris’ energized Fine Gael leads on 25 percent. McDonald’s personal approval ratings are slumping and double digits below Harris and Martin, too.
On the campaign trail, Sinn Féin wants to be talking about its key vote-winning issue: the prohibitive cost and scarcity of housing in a country that ranks as among the most expensive places to live in Europe.
But analysts say the party will struggle to pull the focus away from its own internal strife and secrecy — and an impression that it’s not fit to rule.
“This has added fuel to what is going to be a ferociously fought general election,” said Gary Murphy, politics professor at Dublin City University. “The government parties will say: ‘well, you can’t even get your own house in order. How can we expect you to get the government house in order?’”
“If the general election is called soon, which it might well be, Sinn Féin will go into it on the back foot.”

Catwoman (second half of Vol 2):
And done with this! My previous discussion of the runs got up to Moench here, so let’s discuss the back half of volume 2.
Devin Grayson (Catwoman #54-71, #1,000,000 1993): Devin’s run has some extreme highs: issue #54, where Selina repeatedly robs a museum, is probably my favourite single issue of the entire volume and one of my favourite Catwoman stories of all time; and the bank heist in #61 is also very very fun to read. The remainder of the run suffers from some written-in-the-90s-itis, but I really enjoyed the lean into looking at different ways that Selina’s criminality as a thief could function, and different types of thefts and scams. It’s a breath of fresh air in the title.
John Ostrander (Catwoman #72-77 1993): Ostrander gets the ‘Selina in No Man’s Land’ story and it’s very Ostrander. She breaks in, she breaks out, she breaks in again, she steals computer discs that contain land title data about Gotham for Bruce, Ostrander and Denis O’Neil repeat a third of a title across Catwoman and Azrael because they don’t trust readers are reading both stories, she hooks up with a crew that include someone who can absorb kinetic energy and gets high on it (and honestly, the writing of Mookie in this run reminds me how closely Ostrander and Simone have worked in terms of complementary tone over the years, because Mookie absolutely reminds me of a few Simone characters). It’s very frenetic and full of criminals working at cross purposes. If you like Ostrander you’ll probably enjoy this run, if you’re not a fan of Ostrander it’ll probably rub all of your sore points. As a No Man’s Land tie in it’s pretty well self contained, apart from the whole “insert Azrael right here” bit and the understanding of why Selina needs to be running around trying to steal these discs. I personally enjoyed it but it was also very Mercy Graves is sexy and will kill you except Selina also has the power of sexy and is going to catfight with her.
Bronwyn Carlton (Catwoman #78-86, 88-91 1993): Wow. While this run does have some very valuable backstory additions (looking at the fleshing out of Maria’s backstory as Cuban in particular, and what the household looked like before Maria’s death), it’s otherwise extremely trippy to read, because it feels off from they very first story. Reading it, I was wondering whether it was a case that Carlton just had a really weird grasp on what she considered Selina’s personality to be, or if Selina was specifically being influenced by other characters – like, there’s a whole fakeout sequence that looked to me like the plot was about to direct itself into ‘Harley Quinn has brainwashed Selina to work with her and start actively killing with a gun’, yet that went nowhere and instead we just had Selina clearly having a mental breakdown.
What was even more distracting about it, was that Carlton was clearly on top of what was happening in other titles, what had happened in earlier runs, etc – we had tonnes of on page references and call backs! And yet it was for that. It’s just a reminder that you can be technically good at your job while putting out stuff I really don’t vibe with.
In interesting news though it made the lead into why Officer Down was like that make a bit more sense in my head, particularly in terms of why ‘Selina Kyle decided to shoot Jim Gordon’ was even a viable concept, given he’d had her arrested, tried and imprisoned at the start of this run.
I think if I were going to read this again I really want to read it with the letters columns alongside it, just because it feels like a run where the plot started reacting to predictions from letter writers.
Jordan B. Gorfinkel (Catwoman #87, Annual #2): so these felt simultaneously kinda weird and off in a completely different direction. Annual #2 is Catwoman: Year One, which is kinda a further spin off from Batman: Year One that didn’t actually check for compliance with Her Sister’s Keeper. It’s fine. Not great, but fine. Catwoman #87 is a random break in a complicated storyline for Selina to go get involved in child trafficking, and while she claims she ethically doesn’t do that…totally proceeds to do that, and the conclusion from Selina is more ‘trafficking is bad because the parents didn’t get paid’ than actually ethically being against the kids being sold.
On top of this we have the problem that it’s smack bang in the middle of Carlton’s run, so you can’t actually tell if this weird ethically unlikely behaviour from Selina is because of Carlton’s plot, or if it’s just randomly from nowhere.
Bizarre choices all around.
John Francis Moore (Catwoman #92-94): the ‘try to sort out what on earth just happened’ three parter to put the title decently to bed. And it’s just wild moment followed by wild moment. Selina’s Maggie! No she’s Selina hallucinating she’s Maggie pretending to be Selina! Maggie’s the product of Selina’s mind! Maggie actually exists! The entire plot of the last 20 issues or so is because of events that happened back in #66! I don’t think I can get a read on whether this is good or bad, it’s just throwing stuff against the wall to tie off the book with some sort of resolution.
I don’t know what was happening internally in the Bat office at this moment, but someone clearly had the shits with things and just wanted it done. And in the long term, it was the right call, because ending the title gave them the chance to reset everything and hand Selina over to Ed Brubaker, which is one of the best decisions DC editorial has ever made in regards to Catwoman as a character. But wow was the reboot that Ed Brubaker and Darwyn Cooke gave Selina in the aftermath all of this desperately, desperately needed.
