hello and congrats on the new job in Utah!! I lived there for 3ish years and I still miss it sometimes. I just wanted to pop in and say that if you’re going to be in the SLC area and looking to make friends/meet new people, Under the Umbrella bookstore is an amazing indie bookstore that does a lot of community-building events for the local queer community! They were located near my old work and I never did much more than buy books but they do the *coolest* stuff and sometimes I lived in Utah again just so I could go to their events lol
Listen, I saved this ask so I could have it at hand for reference when I actually got into Salt Lake City, and now that I'm here...
*shakes a finger threateningly in your direction* YOU. I DID NOT NEED TO ACCUMULATE MORE BOOKS.
Tumblr media
...Damnit. It's SUCH a good bookshop. Thanks for that.
I wish I was sticking around! I'm giving myself a break tomorrow and I'm gonna try see Evermore (edit: UGH, I just realized I'm in the exact wrong time period between Oktoberfest and Ripper's Cove AND tomorrow is a Monday, time means nothing to me, FINE), but the day after that I'm heading four hours south for the final leg of the trip. I spent most of today walking around SLC, and honestly, I... kind of didn't expect to have as much fun as I did?
I mean, obviously, the bookstore was fun, but I also wandered into a performing arts center in the vain hope of finding a bathroom I didn't have to pay for, ended up chatting with a house manager who gave me a bunch of cool museums to visit, and then mentioned off-hand that they had a show going on right now, and on my way out I realized it was too damn hot to go explore the city in mid-afternoon so I bought a ticket without knowing what the show was and caught the last two and a half hours of a three-hour-long combination lecture/dance/concert centering around Indian novel Ponniyin Selvan???
And they were selling Indian food at the concession stand, so I got to treat myself to samosas for dinner???
And then after that I wandered around Temple Square and ducked into the Tabernacle to catch a bit of the choir practice???
And then after THAT I took Obi's vest off so he could roll around in the grass right outside for a bit, and a couple girls came up and we started chatting and it turns out one of them ALSO had MS so we exchanged numbers to bitch about it together???
I mean. I'm not complaining. I genuinely didn't expect to be enjoying myself so much. Long live road trips, I guess! The mountains are UNREAL.

Can you talk about the study on tulpas that Stanford is doing? We remember you mentioning it
Sure!
Here is the post in r/tulpas from 2019
The event was 3 days long: 2 for travel, and 1 day for scans and interview.
I flew in in the evening, and caught a university paid Uber to the hotel. It was in the afternoon at this point. The flight from SLC to SFO isn’t a particularly long one, so I wasn’t horribly tired and didn’t feel like crashing for much. I relaxed a bit, and decided to meet up with another mancer in the area, and get a bite to eat. After a lovely talk with them, I headed back to the hotel to try and get some decent rest for the far more busy day tomorrow.
I had previously told the crew that I was more of an evening person, so we had the interview over lunch, and did the MRI scans later in the afternoon. Lunch was at Tanya Luhrmann’s home with Michael Lifshitz, on the Stanford campus. The interview was actually rather enjoyable, and gave us much time to talk about tulpas, the community, and Aly in particular. The interview was recorded by all 3 of us at the table, but the other two also will be transcribing it for better use later. It’s entirely possible to ask for a copy from them, and I might get a transcribed version later, but I have my own copy of the audio at least.
The interview was fairly free form. There were some formulaic questions, much like I received in the pre-study questionnaire. But there were also much more open ended questions, that didn’t have a set destination. More than once Tanya would get excited by a response, and ask more followup question that would end up following one tangent after another. The questions were fairly varied; from the more expected ones like how I found out about tulpas or why I made Aly, to more unexpected ones like trying to describe how specifically Aly helps me. The time flowed pretty quickly during the interview, as I attempted to explain my relationship with Aly and the experience of having her. I think I did okay, but there weren’t really any sort of wrong answers.
The MRI scan was fascinating. Due to scheduling restrictions, my session was broken into two portions. Each portion we focused on a separate task. I’m told that one of the two tasks was new, and I was the proverbial guinea pig, but I’m also told that it was a ton easier than the previous one. I wasn’t going to complain. I don’t want to go into too many details, to not poison the well so to speak, so that people can practice for the specifics of the experiments. The first one focused on mindvoice and possession/disassociation. It was probably the longer of the two, since it was a little more involved than the second. We found the test to be harder than expected, even though we knew a bunch of the specifics since we helped design the test. Trying to stay focused while the machine is loudly buzzing and clicking at you while you’re stuffed in a tiny tube, wasn’t exactly easy.
During this, I also had expressed interest in getting a nice scan to print off later. So after the experiment was done, they happily obliged and got a full resolution scan of my brain and emailed it to me. I plan on 3d printing it later, maybe at scale but I haven’t decided yet.
We then had to leave the lab for a while, since another group had scheduled it, so I was given like an hour tour of campus nearby and we grabbed some smoothies. At this point, I was pretty open to just chat with Michael, the neuroimaging researcher about the study and other plans, including doing an AMA after the data has finished being gathered and starting to be analyzed or published.
The second experiment was purely mindvoice related, and far less stressful because it was more open ended and less constrained in general. We rocked through this one really fast, taking a lot less time than expected. Which people were happy about since apparently this particular one had just been retooled. It was still loud and took getting used to, but it worked out pretty well. At the end of it, who would have thought being in a tube for 3 hours would be tiring. I went back to the hotel, ordered some food and just crashed on the bed.
The last day, it was mostly just check out from the hotel and get ready to fly. Tanya had a couple more questions to ask, and I had nothing better to do between checking out of the hotel and my flight. I spoke with her a little bit more, then spent a little over an hour wandering the Stanford campus before I caught another Uber to the airport.
The experience was actually really pleasant. I was incredibly anxious and worried about it, probably for the same reason a lot of other people are. Worries about what will happen, what the process would be, Imposter Syndrome worries, and whatnot. But in the end, it actually was a really positive experience, and fell like it was good for both Aly and myself, since there were a bunch of things that got us a little bit closer together.
That all said, the study still has a bunch of funds left, and we’re looking for more people who’d be willing to spend 3 days in Stanford to go through it all as well. Here is the link for the new interest form, to help us screen who would be the best fit for the study.
Thanks all for reading!
In 2021, it was mentioned that the study was on pause due to COVID.
Due to COVID-19, the study came to an unceremonious halt as lockdowns started. Only recently have the facilities in Stanford opened up enough to consider continuing, but there's still a bunch of general roadblocks due to the pandemic.
Last year, a user reported participating in the study and did an AMA, meaning it had restarted by that point.
One user asked what the goal of the study was, and they responded with this:
Trying to see if there's something that shows up on brain scans. Nothing more or less. Afterwards they can compare to see if it's similar to things like DID.
I haven't heard anything on this particular study since, but the ones running it published this in February:
It's unclear to me if the above study is connected to the MRI study. Since it was mentioned that the MRI study had an interview portion, perhaps they used some of the answers from the interviews with tulpamancers for the MRI study for the above?
Either way, it shouldn't be too much longer before the results are released.
And I'm so eager to see both the conclusions, and what the next phases of research are going to be. 😊

Salt Lake Sunday
Since I hadn’t slept very much I had a sleep in to a normal hour since on Sundays most of the city would be closed anyway. I took a bus downtown and sat in on the tabernacle’s weekly worship session that is broadcast on Mormon TV every Sunday. If you’re ever in Salt Lake City on a Sunday, seeing the tabernacle choir and orchestra performing is the thing to do! This day was a particularly special session for them as there were 27 choir members and 5 orchestra members retiring after today’s performance and there was a standing ovation from the audience for them. The performance was top notch and I was equally impressed by the work of the camera operators and vision mixer putting together the live broadcast that we could see on the TV beside the stage. The camera operator around the orchestra was dressed in black and moved around between the instruments like a ninja, getting the best shot of the particular focal instrument being played while also offering close up shots of individual musicians. It reminded me of being in broadcasting school as a camera operator trying to get the best shot or directing to get the best shot for a particular moment. After the worship session I walked down to Three Pines for another flat white as this is truly the best cafe in SLC - this time I tried their single origin. I then decided to take the bus to an iHop to have some pancakes with bacon for brunch. I had a quick look at Trader Joe’s which was super packed out with shoppers on their weekly grocery shop and then took a bus to Gateway to check out the Urban Arts Gallery. I tried to walk up the road from the bus stop to the gallery following Google’s directions however these led me directly through a homeless encampment so I had to awkwardly walk around in the 30 degree heat which was not ideal! At least the gallery was cool inside, it was essentially a collection of local artists work all in one place. After a long search I eventually found a bathroom and joined the line behind a couple and we got chatting about how long they’d been waiting. They said they’d heard it flush at least three times already and finally a homeless guy walked out with his bike apologising. The lady went in first and cleaned up all the Cheetos that he had dropped all over the seat. I took the next bus out to The People’s Coffee where I tried their cold brew since it was so hot by this time in the day. I walked around for a bit looking at street art and then had an early dinner of McDonald’s nuggets and a milkshake but some annoying guy kept asking me for money while I was trying to eat quickly before my train arrived, there was another guy riding around on a bike presumably dealing drugs so that train could not get here quick enough! The train connected me to a bus out to the airport where I spent the night in a hotel before my early flight back to Denver in the morning.

So I've been in San Diego working comic con for my job. I wasn't initially supposed to go, but I did because they needed help. That meant I had to miss the MBMBAM show in SLC since I was flying out that morning.
Anyway, I didn't know the McElroys would be there since they ARE on tour and while I'm working I look up and see Clint.
I didn't get a picture because he looked a little tired and was out shopping with his wife and it's gotta be old getting asked for photos all the time, but I did get to help him and chat with him for a couple minutes. He was very kind. I wish I'd had the chance to tell him how much his "choose joy" bit from TAZ has helped me over the past couple years, but I did tell him the whole family of McElroy podcasts was a bright spot.
Made missing MBMBAM worth it, because if I'm being honest, Clint is my favorite anyway.

Hello, #sundance With 4 days to go until the fest starts, I’m on the ground here in Utah. Thank you to my colleague Dana Silverman, pictured here, for the SLC airport pick-up this morning. Much appreciated! Dana is based in LA, worked with the Sundance labs last summer and now she’s ready to dig into the fest, coordinating vehicles for the team. We bonded this morning over new wave music, alternative press, and @indiewire, chatting about indie movies and bands. Thank you, Dana! And cheers to the whole, huge team of Sundancers who are putting the final touches on the fest as we countdown to the opening this Thursday! —> Are you coming to Sundance 2023? 8.5.22 I flew to slc from Anchorage. Going to St. George, Ut for niece Seal's wedding on 8.12. My siblings will be there, some of them. Jr picked me up Sat morning at 6am. Went breakfast at IHOP. Went home met Makai. Last saw him in March. He is a chunky 6 month old cute baby. Built like his dad and has this certain look that reminds me of his dad when he is annoyed w you LOL. Spent some time w him and Lauren. We went grocery shopping on me. It helps save some money of theirs that otherwise wouldve gone to this. Ordered lunch. I went Meni apt and showered, did laundry. Returned Jr house spent time w them. Ordered dinner. Returned to meni house. Slept in her room w the xmas lights on cos I was a bit uneasy being alone without her. Had a restless night. Got up, Jr n Makai picked me up to take me to bus stop downtown. We left early but got lost as to where bus stop is, no signs. Asked 2 LDS members who were outside conference center of the church and they didn't know. The whole time I was praying hard to God please don't let me miss the bus. I walked back to Jr in the car then the 2 angels called me back and pointed the way. There was a guy who was going St george also and had a ticket and said that where the bus stop at. I was soooo relieved if Heavenly Father were here, I would've ran and hugged him tight and cried. Thats how worried and relieved I was. So I bid farewell to Jr and went and chatted w the guy w the ticket. Found out he from Park City, Utah and he a member. Another family joined us and also was looking for bus stop lol. They were from Ethiopia. We had a nice lil group gathered there all happy to have found the spot. The bus came w in 5 mins. Super easy to get on. Showed driver our tickets and put away our luggage and now I'm on the SLC express instead of the Flixbus. Its a big and comfortable bus equipped with entertainment and outlet to charge your devices.
I think of God's love for me as I have trusted in his plan. He took Chuck from me and has never failed me in all I've been called to endure such as the loneliness, dealing w my emotions, handling the manly affairs of the home, making major decisions, choosing to spend my $ to support my kids in their struggles. I feel he has made my decision to help them easy. I worry about not having enough left for me to survive on but God always gives me a comfortable and relaxed feeling in my mind and heart. I feel that is his assurance to me that I have done right. I've always trusted in my HF altho it hurt so much to lose my husband and to walk this earth alone. There are times I still break down remembering how much he loved me. Like rn as I'm on this big bus, i got my inspirational lds hymns playing and writing on here cos I brought no journal w me, and as we're going down the road, I have this gorgeous view of the blue sky and the beautiful sun shining thru. One can't help seeing it and not think about God's wondrous creations. Thankful for Tumblr, I can record my thoughts. Dont wanna miss out on all the wonderful things and trials I experience and God's hand in my life daily. Meni is up in Alaska for 2 weeks.

Montpelier ID to Bear Lake UT (Day 14)
7 July 2022
Tumblr media
Today was a short ride - a little less than forty miles. I could have gone farther, but it was a very long stretch from Bear Lake to the next reasonable camping stop and I decided to save that for tomorrow. The first half was on pavement, then gravel, in the broad farmland and wetlands north of the lake. The second half was an almost empty paved road along the east shore of the lake. While the west side has several small towns and we resorts, the east side is much less developed, consisting of a few clusters of new homes and a series of long, fairly exposed campgrounds
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bear Lake stretches 20 miles from north to south, maybe a little less when water levels are low (as they are now). The northern half is in Idaho; the southern half is in Utah. It’s a natural lake, not a reservoir, though it’s level is managed so maybe the distinction is fuzzy. It drains, with help, to the Great Salt Lake and is therefore part of the Great Basin. This water doesn’t flow to any ocean. O
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rendezvous Beach State Park is a big campground strung out along the south shore of Bear Lake and seems mainly to serve as base camp for folks who spend the day in their boats or parked down near the waters edge hanging out with beach toys under canopies. It’s reservation only and even before noon on a weekday, arriving on a bicycle, they hesitated to give me a site. Fortunately, there was a cancellation and I ended up in a walk-in area - exposed to sun and wind and definitely not private. One problem with arriving early to a campground on a bike, especially on a hot day with no shade, is figuring out how to stay comfortable and occupied during the 8-9 hours before sunset.
Tumblr media
I cooked dinner in the shaded picnic pavilion and chatted with a young family who had just moved to SLC from Portland and were exploring their new home. Also talked to a guy in a converted van who turned out to live a few blocks from us in Seattle.
