Overall it really is just getting into how scary being a hunter is from a non hunter perspective. Especially since it's from a surgeon who is like Zayne.

We also learn more about some of the medical conditions that occur with Hunters and protocore symptoms

And once again the mention of the Grim Reaper and again the mention of dark ICE crystals with the dying snow velvet .

Never Ending Winter: Zayne Anecdote #2

First mention of Dawnbreaker and also where we get the info of Zayne's Nightmare into Dawnbreaker's world.

Zayne mentions the nightmares again and talks about how his current reality is more bloody than his nightmares (Dawn Breaker World)

We get Dr.Zayne's perspective as he is "in that world of ice and snow" Zayne attacks himself from his perspective with dark crystals (which we know from The third ancedote is the color of Dawnbreaker's ice

Dr.Zayne refers to this black coated version of him as the Grim Reaper.

Zayne almost accidentally killed someone important to him when he was 12. He was 12 when he first started getting dreams of Dawnbreaker

Crystals begin to grow off of William (though, they mention the color of said crystals being black, they dont mention if they're ice)

Future edit: 1/25/25: Infold has made it very clear recently between the difference between the dark ice of Dawnbreaker and the black crystals that seems to involve humans turning into wanderers. Zayne now in the most recent main story with Caleb has made it clear that the crystals on Kevi was the ones that were on William!!!

The people Dawnbreaker killed appear in front of him after he kills William

Still in the Dark: Zayne Anecdote #3

Georgie's first description of Dawnbreaker Zayne is that of a Grim Reaper (hence the connection to all mentions of him in Never Ending Winter)

Georige is a young boy who hires Zayne to help him find the person who killed his mom

Dawnbreaker is the in canon title for the serial killer who leaves no bodys only dark blue crystals

There is footage of Dawnbreaker killing these people, so it isn't speculation

Detective Ivan, the police working on the Dawnbreaker case, gives distrubing insight into the situation, giving his point of view that the people who Dawnbreaker is killing leave behind shards like Wanderer protocores

When he catches Dawnbreaker in the act, he finds the victim with tentacles and attacking Dawnbreaker.

Georgie's mother was a worker at an ungergound protocore factory

Zayne, after running out of chocolate, takes some from Georgie, and so begins the Georige & Zayne duo.

DB!Zayne watches Old Doctor Television Shows

He also only lives off of Nutrient Solutions

DB! Zayne also has a Jasmine Plant

He also oftens visits a decayed plaza with a jasmine field

In their universe, Linkon City is a city from a distant past.

DB!Zayne confirms that he also dreams and that it is of our Linkon City

Chapter 4 is where we get the most intermigle between Zayne & DB! Zayne.

Zayne dreams of MC and the snacks we share with Zayne in particular a popsicle which could be a reference to the bond story Nostalgic Sweetness

He dreams of being a suregon. He started getting these dreams also at the age twelve

He knew at 12 that MC and Zayne would meet at 27

Dawnbreaker lives vicariously though these dreams and the remnants of Linkon he can find in his world.

Zayne calls the Humans who leave behind Protocore fragments "Abominations"

He plays some recording about Zhuangzi and the Butterfly essentially not knowing if he was the dream or if they are. (Butterfly dreaming of being Zhuangzi or Zhuangzi dreaming of being a Butterfly) Dr.Zayne and Dawnbreaker to a T.

Georgie dreams of being a monster (Foreshadowing yall). Zayne notices a bump under Georgies eyes 😭

Georgie, on the day he turns 12, begins to show more obvious symptoms of being an Abomination

IK this has been more of a recount, but we got little to work with Dawn Breaker lore yall

Dawn Breakers first kill was when he was 12, after he killed his adopted father, who became an Abomination

It is also here that we learn that if not killed, these beings turn into Wanderers.

Zayne is the one who murdered Georgie's mother

We find out that Georgie's mother requested that Zayne kills her half a month before she turned.

Her Coworkers having turned into Wanderers (She believes it was due to their long exposure to the protocores)

Zayne kills Georgie after he becomes an Abomination

Detective Ivan gives us the run down that the government and those in power are hiding the fact that some of those wanderers were once human. He also intends to stop and destory the investigation against Dawnbreaker, likely so Zayne can continue doing his job.

Eternal Attachment

Zayne's Birthday Card!!!! What is it doing in the Dawnbreaker section people ask as I slowly sink into despair about the implications of it

So! I conveniently didn't mention something in a previous section, Still In The Dark

Why are you telling me this you ask having after reading walls of text or just looking at this section first. Well because of this dialogue RIGHT HERE:

A familiar melody drifts through the darkness.

It’s “Happy Birthday”?

“Happy Birthday, Dr. Zayne!”

The girl’s clear voice rings out, her smile warm like the morning sun.

Is he dreaming again?

“From now on, I’ll always be by your side for your birthday.”

The girl’s sincere yet slightly shy expression makes him unable to resist the urge to caress her cheek.

He lowers his head and discovers they’re holding hands. He reaches out, but right before touching the girl’s cheek, she's suddenly looks shocked.

“You… aren’t Dr. Zayne. Who are you?”

Zayne abruptly wakes up. A gray wall stares back at him. The alarm resounds, and the holographic screen starts flickering red again.

Zayne takes a deep breath. What did that dream mean?

How did the girl see him? It’s as if she saw through time and space, through his dreams, to realize he’s not the doctor.

NOW LETS GO LOOK AT THE BIRTHDAY ETERNAL ATTACHMENT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS!

Y'all I'm physically sickkkk. It was very mean of INFOLD to do us like this and then hit us with the Special Investigations.

But in all seriousness I think there was a similar situation in a 4 Star memory but I can't find it so maybe I've gone crazy. But it is connecting and preparing/setting the scene for the Special Investigation: Thorns Under The Moon

Dr. Zayne, our Zayne and DB Zayne or DB is Dawnbreaker

This first main story lore that connects our Zayne with Dawnbreaker. Everything else has come from the anecdotes or something extremely similar

Prologue

It's been two months since the N109 Zone

Once again modified protocores & Aether cores are making amouck

Specifically the type of Wanderer with a Beta Protocurve can distort time and space. That new aether cores may appear where these Wanderers do

We start off in Zayne's POV it refers to us as "The Girl" which makes me believe based off last experiences that this is Dawnbreaker

Black Crystals (Like we have seen regarding wanderers) spring out of the walls and move towards us.

It mentions a time distort which reminds me of those Wanderers mentioned earlier.

It then cuts to our Zayne. He had been sleeping. At the Asko Rehabilitation Center in a Sleeping Pod. He had a nightmare.

Zayne has been having nightmares since his visit to Mt. Eternal.

It's been two months and he hasn't been able to sleep at all.

He doesn't tell us what happened in the Artic only that he is having a rerecurring nightmare

MC mentions that Zayne has a business trip next week and that she is concerned for his health

Zayne tries to say something about how even if he collapses they're other doctors but MC isn't hearing it calling him "My Doctor" 💙

Dr. Zayne tells us he will be careful and stay alive

We tell him our concerns about who we think the fragment we gave him after the N109 zone is the cause of his nightmares.

He tries to tell us it's a coincidence but I'm not so sure about that. Zayne has had these nightmares since he was 12 yes but they're has been no indication they occur so often until now. I think the protocore fragment is doing something.

We also learn, relearn? That Zayne is studying the fragment and it's possible relation with Protocore Syndrome.

We learn about the Wanderer and the Protocore we are hunting

It moves through distorting space. Anywhere it appears those with Protocore Syndrome fall into comas and some even shock

The location is Chansia City. Which we then find out is where Zayne is going for his business trip!!!

We ask to join the medical team and it's Approved.

As we leave the building to meet Zayne, someone gets in our way. (It's Carter 🤢)

He tries to invite us to dinner which fucking EW. (If it was clear at this point that while I keep the lore/plot accurate I'm not afraid to put my own opinion on these. Now it is)

Zayne comes out and saves us and we get to see the Carter and Zayne beef live

Carter tried to invite all three of us to dinner but MC swiftly declines saying that the association forbids its hunters from accepting dinner for work related purposes (idk if that's true or not)

Carter is trying very hard to give us these flowers (I'm like 98% sure he did shit to them) but Zayne snatches them before we can decline and THEN GIVES THEM BACK TO CARTER(My God I love this man)

This line is EVERYTHING oml

"They're much appreciated. Unfortunately there's no room for them in MY car" omlllll

Carter apparently came to give us a warning about being careful when we are traveling which is SO fucking weird. How did he know we were traveling YALL.

Once we are in the car we try and get more information on Carter and Xander Sciences from Zayne

It flashes back to one of Zayne's earlier chapters regarding that rich person with Rafayel's art that sucked people into it. How Xander Sciences has been trying to get Zayne to join them

Zayne tells us that the only thing they have in common is that they studied under the same professor. (Which we already know because of World Underneath but again!!!! This is really connecting all of the outside Anecdotes and various other stories to the Main one!)

We get to call Carter crazy which is fun for me personally (Its also how we find out he is trying to poach us from Zayne to be Carter's patient. Ewwwwwwww)

Zayne also gets to call him crazy 🤣

We get more information about why the medical team is going to Chansia from Greyson

A specific patient has a weird crystal growth in his heart that is different from the normal patients. (Beta Protocurve anyone?) When this patient was admitted to the hospital he caused a Metaflux burst.

We keep trying to surprise Zayne on these trips and it never works XD. He signed all our paperwork so he knew we were coming

Dr Zayne in a surgery clothes!!!

The Wanderer we are chasing closely resembles Myst ( a type of Wanderer) the proctores don't match up however.

The proctore that is pulled from the patient is like the ones we gave Zayne from the monsters in the N109 Zone.

Then out of nowhere a Metaflux occurs

We try and get Zayne and the other doctors to leave the ER but Zayne refuses trying to keep the patient alive

Zayne asks us to use our evol to suprees the Metaflux (Something I didn't even know our Evol could do but also like ofc I will cause he asked me to 🤣)

We do manage to suppress the Metaflux using our Evol and give Zayne enough time

Zayne pulls us off to the side to do a quick Evol examination

Zayne calls us out for not being entirely honest about why we were here. Which fair. But I'm pretty sure it's like classified so-

Zayne counters our point about how the Aether cores can't be causing the mutations due to one being perfectly integrated with our own Heart.

Zayne believes it's human made and I'm definitely inclined to believe him with all the shady shit Ever and Xander Sciences has done.

Somehow the patient is already awake which is genuinely terrifying cause WTF did they do to this dude?

FUCKING CARTER IS BACK AGAIN. THAT WORLD UNDERNEATH SECTION WAS RIGHT. HE IS SO STALKING ZAYNE WTF.

He says he wasn't following us but I don't fucking believe that shit

And this is when we find out that this dude is a Xander Sciences client. Which like. I've been acting like he was already, but this is the actual confirmation from Carter no less

He is trying to get us interested in whatever Frankenstein shit Xander Sciences is doing but both Mc and I could care LESS.

"It's okay, you'll be interested someday"

Omfg he gives me the ICK

He tells us that only Xander Sciences can tell us about what is happening with our heart.

Greyson comes out and tell us that Zayne wants us inside and Greyson also kicks Carter out!!!!

The patient says that "It" trapped him somewhere, a nightmare.

We show him the Wanderer we are hunting. It's the one that put him into the coma

It's a little vague but we ending up in its reality shifting thing.

(Alr outside of the canon, I'ma mention this before we continue. This part is rooted in vague mentions. We still as of now 2/2/25 haven't really gotten any more information about what exactly occurs. We know Dawnbreaker is apart of it but wheter we actually meet Dawnbreaker or Dr. Zayne as Dawnbreaker is something that was debated and still is. Im going to try and keep it to the facts as much as I can but just know that it's difficult to tell even to MC in game who we are talking to. So unless it states otherwise I will be referring to them as "Zayne")

MC deduces after a moment that we are in the Wanderer's protofield

We see "Zayne" and sharp ice crystals materialize around us to pierce our heart

We wake up to "Zayne" in Dawnbreaker's outfit mind you. Which I don't think in any story outside of Dawnbreaker's we ever see Zayne wear.

His figure apparently matches up with the dark figure we have seen before.

MC describes the place she is in and it's Dawnbreaker's apartment from Still in the Dark

Ex. In the fridge is only "weird packets" which we know to the nutritional drink that DB drinks and Chocolate.

MC starts speculating. She mentions how the patient was only trapped in their own dream

She is implying that this is "Zayne's"

"Zayne" mentions that he has dreamed off this place but that everything was better off than it is now.

"Zayne" confirms that this is the place where his nightmares have been occurring

MC mentions how "Every Detail" of this place is fleshed out. That "Zayne" must have seen these places alot to recreate it so clearly (This is what I mean about vague. It's implying that is only a dream of this world but it also keeps hinting that it may be an reality)

"Zayne" mentions that while it dies resemble his nightmares. It is definitely a protofield. We see a Protocore cluster

MC deduces that there is another cluster somewhere and that they need to destroy both at the same time to escape

"Zayne" and MC argue a little bit about who takes the cluster which is across the city.

MC ends up going after it

AFTER SHE IS GONE WERE BACK TO "ZAYNE'S" POV

It goes back to referring to MC as "The Girl"

He freezes the mist and black impurities are in the Ice, some of it still normal Ice. (Is this supposed to be a reference to the fact that DB ice crystals are Black?)

"Zayne" starts seeing people he has killed as Our Zayne or DB.

William • Never Ending Winter

Georgie & Possibly Georgie's Mom • Still In The Dark

A BLACK ice crystal is what shatters part of the Cluster

More lines

"It's Her. But she can't possibly be here"

(It could be a reference to the fact MC can't be here cause she is across the city or because she doesn't exist in DB world)

It's definitely an illusion though as he is imagining her with dark ice flowers growing out of her and her begging for him to Kill her.

He forms BLACK ICE CRYSTALS

A random voice "Zayne" doesn't recognize says

"You shouldn't throw yourself in danger just for her" "Seek your destiny. Only then can you be redeemed" (Is this supposed to be Astra???)

We're back to MC's POV but we aren't back in Chansia. We are in Asko Hospital.

"Zayne" is injured, ice is growing from him.

"Zayne" tells us the clusters was just one layer. We still need to defeat the Wanderer.

MC hears a voice that is echoing "Zayne's" words. (90% certain it's the lines Foreseer gives MC in their myth story) So now Myth Stories are in main story too

Blackened Ice is whats growing on Zayne

MC doesn't think it's just Zayne losing control of his evol

Memoria: Frozen Nightfall

Frozen Nightfall is apart of Thorns Underneath the Moonlight. It is a free five star card taken directly from the story. So you get the cards content without getting the card at all

MC resonates with Zayne as we have done in the past to get rid of the ice.

"Zayne" tells her that the Wanderer isn't the only danger here. He seems certain that he may harm her.

It like suddenly does a Hard Cut? They are back in the city. They aren't in room they were in before and a bunch of mist appears.

"Zayne" is carrying an unconscious MC into a hospital room.

"Zayne" says letting her step into this nightmare was a mistake. He says he has "One last choice"

And seemingly takes the ice that we resonated from him back.

MC once again mentions the weary face of one Zayne and her own merging and then immediately separating.

The attack on MC from the Wanderer wasn't in the protofield

MC asks what "Zayne" did? (I'm not exactly sure what she means by that)

She asks if this is why he has no control of his Evol

MC asks if this dream is more than just a dream to him.

"Zayne" is concerned he will never wake up from this nightmare at some point.

Later, Zayne and MC use their evols together to destroy the last layer. The world turns into "Black Amber"

After defeating the Wanderer they are back in Chansia.

MC makes Zayne back and forth around.

She says she is making sure that "Dr Zayne is the person with me right now." (What does this even mean?!)

MC collapses but she says she is fine. She is holding a part of the aether core fragment it's green

It's been three days since Zayne and MC disappeared in the Protofield.

They discover a strange device in one of the Flux stabilizers in the ICU

Someone tampered with it (Looking at Carter)

We are back in Linkon now. We are in Zayne's home.

Zayne is resting and we get a call from Simone

Simone tells us that the device resonates WITH Metaflux fluctuations

It locates protocores and ATTRACTS Wanderers.

Raymond the rich dude who died, owned Xander Sciences. Xander Sciences was passed on to Ever.

MC says that Ever is creating Monsters

We're back in Zayne's POV. He is in a dream

It looks happy at first but then it goes back to that hallway and Zayne's Evol seemingly attacks MC Again

He is still having those nightmares 😭

Skill Stamps:

I use skill stamps to add a whole bunch of skills to a single sim or sims in bulk!

When adding a newly created sim to your town, they may not have any skills yet until you play them, but a skill stamp can quickly add some skills to them as if they were already played for a while.

MC Cheats Interaction: Skill Stamp> Add New Stamp

Allows the user to define a skill set to apply during "Advanced \ Skill Stamp". Once added, selecting one from the listing will allow you to specify the levels for each skill.

I want some sims to be able to have some basic skills such as cooking.

Click on Town Hall/Computer>NRaas>Settings> Skill Stamp

Add New Stamp: name the skill stamp (e.g Basic Skills).

The skill stamp is listed. Click on it and set the cooking level to whatever you want it to be. I have both the regular cooking skill and the hidden child-skill level, just because. I don't know. 😄

I maxed out the child skill to 3 and set the regular skill to 1.

I've set other skill stamps such as ones for artistic sims (painting, photography, writing) and outdoor sims (athletic, waterskiing, gardening, scuba diving, snowboarding, diving, windsurfing)

I also set one for sims who I want to be able to drive! We now have the 'Sims Need Driving Lessons' mod by the awesome Phoebejaysims! All sims (except NPCS) can't drive until they've reached the maximum level of the driving skill.

Of course you'd want some sims to be able to drive in an already established town, right?

I want my adults and elders to at least have the driving skill, even if some don't have a car yet.

Set a skill stamp for driving:

Click on Town Hall/Computer>NRaas>Settings>Skill Stamp

Name the skill to something driving related, e.g Sims With Driving Licence.

Click on the 'Driving' skill.

Max it out to 3.

Adding skill stamps to a sim with no skills:

Click on a single sim: NRaas>MC>Advanced>Skill Stamp

You see the list of my skill stamps. When I click on each one, all the skills under the stamps will be added to the sim all at once (you'll see the notices that appear in the top right hand corner pop up notifying you the sims have the skills.)

Check their skill panel to see all their added skills. The driving skill is hidden, so it won't show on the panel, but you can check the sim has it by checking their skill levels in Sim>MC>Advanced>Skill Level. It should show 'Driving: 3'

To add the skill stamp to multiple adults and elders, I'll use the filter I made earlier in Part 1.

Click on Town Hall/Computer>Sim>Advanced>Skill Stamp

The filter 'AGE: Adults/Elders' is listed.

Click on it to see a list of all the adult and elder sims.

From the list you can select some of the sims who you want to be able to drive or scroll to the top and click 'All'.

The Skill Stamp list will pop up - choose the 'Sims with driving licence' skill stamp. The skill stamp will be applied. As stated before, you won't see the hidden skill in the sims panel, but they'll be able to drive. You can of course check their skill level via MC>Sims>Advanced>Skill Level.

While you're at it, you can edit some of the selected sims driving skill levels according to whether you want them to do a driving test, theory test or have their skill maxed out so they can drive straightaway when you give them a car...

PJsims mod interactions notes:

If they are level -1 or 0, sims can first do their theory test which will increase driving skill to level 1.

Once they are level 2 in driving, they can do their driving test which, if passed, will automatically max out their driving skill.

Now you can make and add as many skill stamps to any single sim or multiple sims in a filter.

Hot Keys:

MC Interaction: Hot Keys

Allows the user to specify which interactions are to be shown directly under the "NRaas" menu

You can add any MC interaction to the uppermost level of the NRaas menu when you click on a sim, household or terrain as short-cuts, especially your most often-used interactions.

I added the 'skill stamp' and other interactions as hot keys so I can easily edit a sim when I click on one.

Click on Town Hall/Computer>Settings>Hot Keys

I added:

* Change Autonomy

* Reset Sim

* Skill Level

* Skill Stamp

Make sure 'True' is next to the interactions you want to see in the NRaas menu:

Click on a sim or the terrain and you'll hopefully see all your created hot keys.

With the skill interactions you can quickly and easily set a sims skill level or add a skill stamp to them when you click on the sim in less clicks than clicking on multiple dialog boxes.

The other two are self explanatory, turn on/off a sim's autonomy and reset a sim.

Note: The more hot keys you add, the slower the pie menu will take to pop up, so keep that in mind.

If you still don't want to click so many times in the menu to find your interactions, you can use Arro's UI Tweaks mod (currently in testing, soon to be released - it's an excellent mod, I highly recommend it! 👍🏾) You can search the menu by clicking on the magnifying glass icon on the menu or press the 'F' key and type the interaction you want, using a full or partial word!

That's it! That's how I use filters, skill stamps and hotkeys. It will become second nature the more you use them and they can be as easy or as complex as you want them.

Staring at the window, you notice the snowflakes gently dancing in the breeze. They descent from the sky alone and the wind comes along. Some entangle themselves in each other, quietly moving to a new direction as one.

Mindlessly twiddling with your phone charm in your hands, you feel a soft vibration from your phone. It's Tara and Simone.

You get out of your seat, collecting your belongings before following the crowd towards the resort reception.

Is that everything I brought with me? Definitely not enough for a two week trip. You stare at your clothes, barely making a dent in the large closet.

Where do you rent out equipment from? Where do you book an instructor from? How do you decide which instructor is the best for you? The green brochure provides absolutely no help to your questions, only informing you of the best restaurants and cringeworthy picture poses that will make your future children slam the photobook shut in disgust.

It's still early and things are unpacked. This calls for a celebratory nap.

What time is it? You blearily reach for your phone, trying to read the bright screen through squinted vision. 1:18pm. I guess it's time for lunch.

At the dining hall with your full plate of food in hand, you scan the area for free tables to sit at. That person over there with the super straight posture and dark black hair seems so familiar. Is it someone from high school? College, maybe?

Oh. It's Zayne Li from maths class in high school.

To or to not approach him? It looks like he came here alone, it wouldn't be nice to ruin his alone time. If he did come here alone, at least there would be one familiar face in this massive resort. Fuck it. I have nothing to lose.

“Excuse me, do you mind if I sit here, Zayne?” You cautiously approach his table, hoping mentioning his name would get his attention.

“i'm sorry, how do you know who I am? Have we met before?” He looks up from his plate and tilts his head to the side, patiently waiting for an answer.

“We have actually! Sorry, I should have introduced myself earlier. I'm ___. We were maths partners in the last year of high school. Is this a bad time?” You explain; hoping that he will let you sit with him as you feel the weight of the tray slowly becoming more heavier in your hands.

Zayne stares you you for a few seconds on silence. “No, it's not. Please, sit down.” He gestures at the seat directly opposite him and you smile at him before placing your tray down on the table.

You pick up a piece of meat and place it on top of your spoon before placing it in your mouth. Zayne hasn't changed much. He's still the quiet and observant guy from all those years ago.

“How are you, Zayne? What have you been up to all these years?”

“I have been quite busy up until recently. The hospital director has forced me to go on an all inclusive holiday.” The dark haired man replies before picking up a spoonful of rice.

“Hospital?” You repeat in surprise. “Did you actually become a doctor?”

The man in question nods his head. “I have been for a few years now. I would have preferred to stay at the hospital especially during the winter holidays as it becomes very busy. However, the higher ups at the hospital say they see me too often to be considered normal so they paid me to have a break for a while.”

“That’s great! I can tell you're extremely passionate about your work but hopefully this break will give you the rest your body needs.”

Silence. 13 seconds of silence. Well this is awkward.

You drink your fizzy lemonade as a way to think of more things to talk to the man about, before he runs off and you lose the only familiar face here. “I actually came here alone. This was actually kind of a last minute decision and I have no plan of what to do. Do you know where you can rent out equipment and book an instructor?”

“You can go to the building next door for the equipment.” He paused. “For the instructor, I’m not quite so sure. I would assume you would be able to ask the people in the same building where you rent out your equipment. I don't think many instructors would have much availability though, since you mentioned this was a last minute decision.”

“Thank you Zayne! If I’m unable to get an instructor I’ll just go through some tutorial videos tonight and start from there.” You reply, drinking in more of the fizzy lemonade.

Zayne’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “You’re just going to watch some tutorial videos and hope that everything will be fine in the morning?”

“I know it doesn’t sound ideal, but I am a hunter.” You shrug your shoulders with pride. “If I can get through the association’s hunter training, I think I can get through some snowboarding.”

“Really?” He asks and you nod. “Then you shouldn't call for me when you manage to injure yourself. After all, your amazing self- help videos should tell you what to do.”

“No problem! I’m sure that other people passing by would help me if they see someone in trouble.” Zayne’s mouth opens and closes but nothing comes out. “Let me help you, ___. I can snowboard quite well, if I do say so myself. Besides, the people who come to help you whilst you are injured may not be healthcare professionals, let alone doctors.”

You frown. “I couldn't ask you to do that, Zayne. I have already ruined your meal by barging in here. I’ll be fine, I promise.”

“I insist. It would make me more stressed to know that the only person I know around here could be a threat to herself and it would take me longer to get to you.” I can’t go out and stress this doctor anymore, can I?

“Fine.” You give in. “But only if I get to buy you desserts in return. If you still like them, of course.”

“It’s a deal then. I need to go get my coat first. Meet you at the reception of the building next door for the equipment?” He asks and you nod, watching him leave the dining hall.

With equipment sorted out, you and Zayne make your way to the ski lift. You watch as other people get on the lift and do the same when the next one approaches you. “How long have you been snowboarding for?”

“About ten years. My parents would often take me to places like these when they weren't working.” Zayne replies, staring at the trees in the distance. “It’s almost time for us to get off. Be careful.”

He gets off easliy and you get off too, almost tripping over your feet in the process. Unsure of where to go, you follow Zayne like a lost puppy. Children’s zone. You read the massive arched sign in front of you.

“Zayne, I’m going to learn how to snowboard in the children’s zone?” You ask the man, looking up at him through your goggles.

“Yes. I know it might be a bit embarrassing, but I can assure you it’s a lot more safer to learn here instead of being with more advanced people who could potentially barge into you.” He says calmly as you walk together towards a calmer and quieter area. “First thing to learn is your stance.” Zayne demonstrates the proper stance and silently gestures at you to copy him.

“Like this?” You ask as you look back at him, trying to match your stance with his.

He tilts his head to the side and slowly moves in front of you. “Not quite. Bend your knees a bit more and keep your back straight.” You do as he says but his brows still stay furrowed. “Do you mind?” You shake your head no and he moves towards you. His hands gently fix your posture as you look to the side. “Your head has to be facing forward.”

You face forward and make eye contact with him. Wow, he’s really close. I never realised he had such pretty eyes. His lips are so pink, one wrong move and my lips would be on his.

“Much better.” You hear, and your eyes are back on him again. Zayne doesn’t step back. You notice the tips of his ears turning bright red. Why has it suddenly gotten so loud? There’s barely anyone here apart from me and Zayne. The Zayne whose face is super close to mine. Seriously, what is that loud sound?

Why does it feel like I’ve ran a whole marathon? I’ve barely done anything. My heart feels like it’s going to beat out of my chest. My heart- OH. Zayne is the one making my heart beat like crazy.

“Sorry.” Zayne coughs and steps back. You let out a breath you didn’t even know you were holding.

“Next thing we need to learn is how to fall safely. Before you say anything, I'm sure you already know how to fall safely from a height but this is different. This is on snow, ___. Please don't let your confidence get the best of you.” I see Zayne has already noticed my concerning confidence.

“Well done. Should we end the session here?” Zayne reaches out his hand for you to pull yourself up from the snow.

“Yes please, I feel like you have made me fall safely on my snowboard enough to do it perfectly in my sleep!” You say, grabbing his hand and brushing off the remaining snow on your gloves.

You both make your way to the ski lift and make your way down, saying nothing to each other.

“I guess I’ll see you tomorrow? Does 10am work for you?” Zayne asks as you get off the ski lift.

“Thanks again for agreeing to help me, Zayne! Yeah, I’ll see you tomorrow!” You reply, waving at Zayne before walking off in different directions.

Walking to the bakery, your nose gets filled with the wonderful scent of freshly baked pastries. What would Zayne like? He mentioned he still likes desserts so... something super sweet.

You walk up to the counter and smile at the worker in front of you. “Can I get a box of macarons please? Could I also get two slices of the strawberry cake as well please?”

“That will be 8.50 please.” The worker says and you scan your card on the machine. The worker quickly boxes up your desserts and you thank her before walking back to your room.

As you walk through the hallway, you see a very familiar face walking into the hallway. One that has helped you with your snowboarding skills over the past three hours.

“Zayne?” You call out to him, and he turns his head. “I was expecting to see you tomorrow but I guess I can give them to you now.” You hand him the box of macarons.

“Oh, thank you ___. I was just going out for dinner. Thanks to you, I don’t need to go to the bakery to pick these up.” He smiles widely, taking the box of macarons from your hands.

“Enjoy your dinner! See you tomorrow!” You say, your hand ready to put in the code to your room.

“Are you not going to eat dinner?” Zayne asks and you hear a small hint of sadness in his voice. Is this sadness of his from me not eating dinner? Or is it because he’s eating dinner alone?

“I’ll eat later, Zayne. I’ll let you have dinner on your own after I stormed in on your lunch.” You respond.

“I wouldn’t have mentioned dinner if I wasn't interested in eating alone. You can have dinner with me. Only if you’re comfortable with it.” Zayne replies and you smile at him again.

“In that case, I’ll have dinner with you then Zayne! I’ll just put this in my room and I’ll be right out.” You point to the box filled with your cake slices and quickly open the door and place them on the table.

“Let’s go?” You ask as you close the door behind you and Zayne leads the way.

You and Zayne are neighbours now.

I slept so well last night, but why do all of my muscles suddenly get so weak in front of Zayne?

“Last thing I’m going to show you today is an Ollie. First, scoot the board and flex your back leg. Next, pull your front leg up whilst you spring off your back foot, then flex both your legs and land with your feet.” Zayne explains and demonstrates.

“Got it.” You say, mentally going over the steps.

Scoot the board and flex. Easy enough. Pull the front leg up and spring off the back foot and flex both legs. Land with your feet. Success! “Zayne!” You shout. “I did it!”

You make your way to Zayne, with a proud smile on your face. “Are you proud? How did I do? Did I look cool?” You bombard him with questions, feeling the joy flow through your body.

“Very proud. You did great, your form is extremely impressive for a beginner and you looked very cool.” He says, removing your goggles for you.

“Wait, why are you removing my goggles? I need to practice more!” You ask in confusion, looking up at the dark haired man.

“You did so well, I think I’m going to have to take you out of the children's zone and into the beginner zone now.” You gasp.

“This calls for a celebration! Let’s go!” You lead the way, not looking back to see if Zayne is following you.

“I seemed to have missed something. I understand we are celebrating, but the beginner zone is in the other direction.” He points to the large sign.

“My amazing achievement calls for a break. In fact, the whole day off kinda break!” You turn back and grab Zayne’s wrist.

“Where are you going to take me?” Zayne chuckles at your antics.

“We’re going to go dog sledding of course!” You say and you continue stringing him along.

You find yourself sitting in the reception of the activities centre, impatiently waiting for the musher to call out your names. “Aren’t you excited?” Zayne teases, taking notice of your restless hands.

“I’m so excited! I literally sit, do nothing and there are a bunch of huskies within arms reach. What else could a girl want?” You chirp. “What about you, Zayne? Are you excited?”

“Very excited, even though it doesn't quite look like it. Animals aren't very fond of me but hopefully today will be different. I’m also quite looking forward to the scenery, although I’m not sure we will be able to see it very clearly since the dogs run extremely fast.”

New mission acquired: get the huskies to love Zayne.

“Zayne and ___?” An unfamiliar voice calls out and you jump out of your seat, quickly making your way to the musher. “Nice to meet you guys, I’m Jeffrey, your musher. The dogs are right outside and are very eager to meet you.”

The musher leads the way and you soon find yourself standing in front of ten enthusiastic, loving huskies.

“They’re extremely sociable and love getting pets. They also love treats too.” The musher holds out a bag of treats and shakes it, causing all the huskies to snap their heads towards Simon. “Here are some treats, they love food.” Simon gives you a handful and you pass some onto Zayne.

A husky quickly makes their way over to you, trying to press its nose between the gaps of your fingers. “They’re so adorable!” You exclaim, giving the husky a treat.

“This one over here is Cinnamon.” Jeffrey says, pointing to the husky in front of you.

“Hi Cinnamon!” You call out in a high pitched tone. “Your name is almost as cute as you!” You still have a mission, ___. Get the huskies to love Zayne.

You scour the area to look for Zayne, realising it's way too quiet. Huskies are crowded in a circle, patiently waiting for pets but you are still unable to find Zayne. It's only after one of the huskies makes their way over to you is when you realise that Zayne has been the centre of attention this whole time.

Mission complete!

Zayne sits on the floor, quietly petting each husky in turn and giving each husky an equal number of treats. You quickly grab your phone and take a quick picture. One husky cuts through the petting train and fully launches itself onto Zayne, licking his chin.

Jeffrey laughs. “And that one over there is Marshmallow.”

Zayne sits down first in the sleigh and you sit next to him, feeling his body warmth in this cold weather. You look to the front and see the leading dogs jumping up and down, clearly more excited to start moving than you are.

“Zayne look at the cute doggie in the front! Its tail is moving like a metronome! It’s so cute!” You squeal, pointing at the dog with the fluffy excited tail.

“That’s Mochi, he has so much energy he ran into me and almost knocked me over.” Zayne smiles. “He reminds me of Pie.”

“Pie? I remember you mentioned Pie quite a bit when we were in high school. He’s an arctic fox that lives with your grandparents right?” You try to recall those memories from the back of your mind.

“I’m surprised you remembered.“He paused. “These huskies have so much energy and are so happy go lucky, they just want to be constantly looked after. It's adorable, really.”

“Hold on, you never showed me a picture of Pie!” You exclaim.

“You never asked for a picture.” Zayne answers coolly. “I can show you once we finish this tour. If that still doesn’t satisfy your overwhelming desire to see Pie, you can meet him in person.”

Meet Pie in person? Is this Zayne’s way of suggesting that we go on future trips together? Including ones that have me meeting his family? Calm down, ___. You’re just overthinking things now.

“Let’s go doggies!” Jeffrey shouts, and the dogs bark loudly before they start running.

The sleigh starts moving and you feel the wind flow through your hair. Zayne taps your shoulder and smiles. You smile back.

You thank Jeffrey for a safe ride and wave goodbye to the huskies, hearing them whine loudly in response.

“I think I’m going to book a session with them every single day until I leave the resort.” You say, and Zayne nods, practically dragging his legs on the ground, clearly sad that he had to leave the dogs.

“It’s okay Zayne, I heard there’s a cat called Toast that hangs out in the reception that absolutely loves getting attention. Hopefully she’ll be there to say hi to us.” You really hope she is.

To your relief, Toast was lounging around on one of the tables in the reception. Zayne’s expression instantly softens and the sad Zayne disappears. He puts his hand out for Toast to sniff and she happily presses her nose against his hand. Zayne doesn’t move even an inch, afraid that Toast would suddenly want alone time.

Toast was the one that broke off the relationship, jumping off the table and aimlessly walking around the reception. “Let’s go?” You cautiously suggest and Zayne doesn't look upset, happily smiling to himself as you make your way to your rooms.

“I’ll see you at the same time tomorrow?” You ask and Zayne nods.

You wave him goodbye, opening the door and you plop onto the bed, letting out a short squeal as your legs kick the air.

He can’t keep doing this to me, first he makes me think that he wants to go on trips together and now he is an animal lover? My poor heart won't be able to take this much cuteness. How on earth am I going to sleep peacefully tonight?

“Since we had the most adorable break yesterday and you have proved your capabilities,” Zayne says, moving backwards so he can face you directly and points to the large sign in front of him. “Welcome to the beginner zone.”

“It’s so much more crowded here, and the terrain looks a little more difficult too.” You look around, noticing the increase in instructors helping their students.

“It is, but you have done extremely well so you don't have much to worry about.” Zayne says reassuringly.

“Ready to get started?” You nod in agreement. “How about you show me an Ollie?” Zayne eagerly ready to watch.

You perform all the steps correctly, but you notice how it has become a little more difficult due to the different terrain. Nothing much to worry about.

“Perfect. Are you ready to learn something new today?” Zayne asks as you move towards him and you immediately agree, ready to feel the joy flowing through your veins after nailing a move for the first time.

“I’m going to show you how to do a J- turn today. First, glide forward and the weight on your front foot needs to be shifted to your toes. If you do it correctly, the weight shift should turn your board and you will be moving in a J- like shape, hence the name J- turn.” Zayne explains and demonstrates, silently waiting for you to do the same.

Glide forward. Shift the weight from the toes to your front feet. Wait, that’s not right! You suddenly feel a wave of panic wash over you. You’re not in the easy children zone anymore either. I’m going to fall. I’m going to fall in front of Zayne and look like an absolute idiot. Shit, this is not going to look pretty.

You see Zayne’s blurry figure in the distance quickly becoming more clearer as you snowboard your way to the death of your well curated image in front of Zayne. What a pretty face. Never going to be able to look at his face without feeling embarrassed ever again.

No, you still have a chance to save yourself, ___! Fall safely. How the fuck do you fall safely?

Whilst your mind is spiraling from thoughts of falling and looking like an absolute idiot in front of Zayne, you suddenly stop moving and crash into a soft pile of fresh snow.

How did that happen? Has all of the snow on earth collected itself in order to protect me?

“Are you okay? ___!” You hear a familiar voice call your name from afar.

God? Is that you? I have seemed to have died in front of Zayne and he’s never going to emotionally recover from this. Zayne, I’m so sorry.

“Are you okay? ___?” You hear Zayne’s voice, clearly sounding very frantic.

I’m alive but I have still managed to emotionally scar him.

“I’m alive.” You open your eyes to see a very distressed Zayne, his goggles removed and his hair swept to the side.

“Do you feel any pain?” Zayne asks, afraid to touch you in case of injury.

“Physically, no but my pride is.” You reply and hear him sigh a breath of relief.

“I’m glad to know that your humour still remains intact. Come on, let’s get you up.” Zayne outstretches his hand.

You prop one hand on the floor and the other grabs his hand. “Ow!” You exclaim, feeling a minor pain from your wrist.

“Sit back down for me, ___. Is it your wrist? Your ankle?” Zayne’s commands gently and you oblige.

“My wrist. The rest of my body is fine though.” You say and Zayne suddenly moves in front of you and sits down.

What is he doing? Is he mad that I hurt my wrist and is throwing a silent tantrum like a toddler?

“What are you waiting for, ___? Get on.” You hear, Zayne's voice slightly muffled. A piggyback ride?

“Zayne, I’ve only hurt my wrist! Don’t you think this is a bit overkill?” You question the man in front of you.

“No. I see this as a way of preventing any future injuries.” He sounds serious. I guess he’s in doctor mode.

“Okay, I’ll get on.” You comply, holding on to him tightly. “Zayne?”

“Yes?”

“I didn’t even fall safely and I wasn’t even thinking straight. How did I just suddenly stop moving? How on earth am I still in one piece?” You ask, hoping he has the answers.

“How else do you think the pile of snow magically appeared in front of you?” He replies and suddenly, everything clicks.

He used his evol to create a snow pile so I wouldn’t badly hurt myself? You feel blood rushing to your cheeks, feeling very grateful that Zayne wouldn't be able to see your tomato red face.

You sit in Zayne’s room, watching as he grabs his first aid kit out of his suitcase.

“Zayne,” You call out. “I’m fine, I just sprained my wrist. I just need to put on some ice and I’ll be fine.”

“I’ll be the judge of that, Miss Hunter.” Zayne says, sitting down next to you. “You sprained your wrist, which clearly means you are not fine. I'm sorry for not being more observant and just assumed that you would be able to do the moves easily. I should’ve shown you step by step and allowed you enough time to practice.” Zayne apologises, assessing the state of your sprain.

“No Zayne, you know that I am quite confident when it comes to physical things like sports, so I just assumed that everything would be okay. If anything, I should be thanking you for your quick thinking and using your evol to protect me.” You say, unable to sit still as you realise your hands are extremely close to each other.

“Please sit still, ___. The only way I can forgive myself and put my mind at ease is only if you let me take care of you.”

The sound of velcro breaks the silence in the room. You focus on Zayne, who is cautiously puting the splint on your wrist without trying to make you wince from the pain.

He looks so angelic when he’s focused.

The sound of velcro being fastened suddenly stops and Zayne looks at you. “How can I look angelic to you when I have caused you pain?”

Fuck. I said that outloud? Refusing to say anything, you look to the side, trying to count the number of trees that you see in the window to get your rapidly increasing heart rate down.

“Please ___, look at me.” Zayne pleads, and you slowly turn your head, preparing yourself for a soul shattering rejection.

Zayne's smiles when you look at him and you finally make eye contact with him. “You look like a lovesick puppy, Zayne.”

“Would it be okay with you if I was your lovesick puppy?”

Your brain short circuits.

“Yes please.” Your heart starts drumming loudly in your chest as you realise that the Zayne Li has just confessed to you.

“Can I kiss you?” Zayne asks quietly and you nod.

Zayne closes the distance and you allow yourself to be absorbed in the moment. Your heart races as your heartbeat rings through your ears. Zayne's hands delicately trace your back and find their way around your waist, pulling you in closer. His touch is ever so gentle, afraid that one wrong move will cause you to shatter like glass.

You pull away from him, as the need for oxygen overwhelms your lungs. Zayne’s warm hands gently presses against your cheeks and he brings your face up to his, placing a soft kiss on your forehead.

“If your hand ever gets too heavy from wearing your splint, I can hold it for you.” You proceed to shove your face into his chest.

It’s been a year since you have reunited with Zayne at the Linkon ski resort. What better way to celebrate than by going back to where everything started?

You stand in the beginner zone, feeling anxiety wash over you, wondering what on earth made you think it would be a good idea to potentially give yourself a concussion.

“Zayne?” You call out to him.

“Yes?” He turns around and upon seeing your worried expression, he pouts.

“Do you think I’ll be okay? Do you think I’ll be able to get the moves right this time? If I fall and pass out, please take me to the hospital.” You ramble, looking up at him with pleading eyes.

“I’ll be here.” He squeezes your hand reassuringly. “Besides, the last time you fell I saved you. I can save you over and over until you get up on your feet again.” You smile at him, instantly feeling assured. “I’ll go first.” He says, smoothly making his way down the slope.

Glide forward. Shift the weight from your front feet to your toes. “Zayne! I’m doing it!” You shout cheerfully, proudly waving at him.

“Don’t focus on me, you’re losing your balance!” Zayne shouts back.

Well fuck me. I guess I’m falling for you again Zayne.

You fully accept your current situation and close your eyes, waiting for the snowboard to stop as you put your trust in Zayne. You suddenly stop moving, but you don’t feel the snow greeting you with its coldness but rather a pair of welcoming arms.

What? Has my pile of snow magically transformed into a human? A snowman with human like body temperature perhaps?

Fluttering your eyes open, you see Zayne and he relaxes his shoulders in relief. .

He actually caught me?

“Zayne!” You scramble out of his arms in anger. “I didn't think you were going to literally catch me? What you did was so dangerous! What if we both got hurt?” You exclaim, giving the doctor a lecture and childishly refuse to look at him.

“I know, I know.” He surrenders. “In the moment, it seemed like a good idea. I’m sorry darling, it won't happen again.”

“I hope you mean it Zayne. I would much rather you freeze me and carry me away to a safer place before unfreezing me.” You say and Zayne chuckles.

“If you insist.” He takes your hand and he gently rubs circles on the back of your hand. ”The one thing you should take away from this experience is that you have learnt that I am a man of my word.”

“Thank you for catching me.” You whisper.

“Of course darling. I told you that I would catch you if you stumble and fall.” Zayne delicately removes snowflakes in your hair and you rest your head on his shoulder.

Pitchposting: sports RPG

So you're a no-life gamer in a dead-end town, and you're sick of spending all your time on the internet. It's time to go outside, touch grass, and get good at sports. Finally make your dad proud. Your childhood best friend and rival wants no part of it—he really likes playing video games—so you're all on your own in sports world. You need to grind hard, level up, and be the best.

This is like, a cartoon world running on sports logic. The major thoroughfares are long, winding running tracks, the electricity pylons are rugby posts, and so on. All the NPCs you meet are dedicated to a particular sport; when you run into them, you go into a little minigame, a cross between Wii Sports and Warioware. Your basic stats make these games (speed, jump height, etc) start trickier, but your opponents improve over time too.

If you're going to become champion, first you need to hit the gyms. Each town is themed after different kinds of sports:

1. Athletics

This is the tutorial area, where you get to grips with the basic gameplay loop with some really basic minigames. So like, sprinting is buttonmashing left/right, hammer toss is alternating in a rhythm and then releasing. Maybe you can unlock "gamer abilities", such as being able to double-jump in the long jump and hurdles? The NPCs teach you all of these mini-games, and at the end the gym champ challenges you to all of them in a row, or maybe some kind of looping endurance match...? When you win you get your first medal.

2. Ball games

This area is themed as worn-down suburbs, rusty chain-link fences and breezeblocks surrounding concrete courts with scuffed paint marking the pitch. You have to beat the neighbourhood kids, then the five-a-side crowd, then the local association, before finally fielding the gym, a packed stadium with a roaring crowd. Maybe there's like a recruitment mechanic? Hidden away behind a hedge, there's a golf club where rickety has-beens lounge around, playing boules by the veranda.

3. Water sports

Before entering this area, you'll get a pair of trunks or goggles or something, giving you the ability to swim in the overworld. This area is themed as a massive leisure centre/waterpark, where you navigate mainly using slides. In addition to swimming and diving, there's water polo (which reuses mechanics from the ball games area) and kayaking (and/or canoeing, depending on how team events work?).

4. Martial arts

This area is themed as a sort of battle royale where everyone is always fighting; post-apocalyptic only in the way the first Fallout game is, the way The Karate Kid is, if that makes any sense. Minigames here include stuff like boxing, karate, sumo, but also shooting and archery.

5. Motorsports

Upon entry to this area, you get a little car which you drive around in on the overworld. What do you mean, you can use a car to get from A to B? Don't be ridiculous. Cars serve one purpose only, and that's HIGH OCTANE RACING. Whether that's demolition derby, or a good ol' fashioned drag race, you gotta be the fastest. Sidenote, I'm kind of undecided about what to do with cycling, maybe it goes here in the wheel exclusion zone.

6. Winter sports

A cable car finally gets fixed, taking you up to Mount Olympus. Expect ski jumps, slalom, snowboarding, ice hockey, curling my beloved, figure skating, and bobsleigh. My thematic angle for this one would be the contrast between the frigid cold and the vital heat of exertion, as if all this striving to go faster and burn brighter is the only thing stopping the heat death of the universe. Maybe that's, like, a literal thing?

7. eSports

You can't believe it! You could've stayed inside playing video games the whole time!? All the NPCs have the same game-within-a-game, styled as a League of Legends-inspired fantasy MMORPG (probably built using the overworld engine) with ability-based combat. Maybe it plays a little like old Legend of Zelda games? Anyway, the twist is that the gym leader turns out to be none other than your childhood rival from the start of the game, who admits to having pushed you towards "real sports" because he was afraid you'd surpass his skill otherwise.

8. Extreme sports

The final area is an immense canyon, an open grave for those who no longer fear death. You'll risk it all, skateboarding, hang gliding, motocrossing, rock-climbing, surfing, and... speed stacking? Does that count? The NPCs are unsure but whatever speed stacking is here. You like, stack up the cups using the mouse.

End: The Omniathlon

Once you've earned all eight medals, you can challenge the current cup holder. He's a living legend—but he's getting old. You think you can beat him in the Omniathlon, a gruelling gauntlet of every single event. But what you fail to realise is that, in the Omniathlon, you participate in all these events... at the same time. In the final boss fight, two minigames appear on the screen at once, and you have to play both simultaneously (maybe it's like, one keyboard-based event and one mouse-based event). Maybe it's impossible to beat him, you just have to avoid getting knocked out long enough that he suffers some kind of injury, wipes out midgame, dies of old age.

Notes

I guess what I'm interested in with this pitch—as someone who obviously doesn't engage with any form of sports whatsoever—is the boiling-down of this huge entire world of these deeply physical activities to just a few little keypresses. To me there's this inherent irony to a game about going out into the world to do real sport with real people, which you play on your computer. Most of my memory of sport game from PE in school, or vaguely-obligatory extracurriculars, all of which I dropped the minute I got to university. Sometimes I wonder if being asthmatic was what prevented me from ever truly enjoying sport, or if it was something else. I want to draw on those memories, the physical environments, how I felt in my body.

Stories like 17776, Ping Pong, Players (that League of Legends mockumentary), Challengers and When I Win The World Ends have allowed me to engage with sports culture as an adult, and there are parts of it that compel me. I think mostly the idea of dedicating your life to something, especially if you do so and at the end of it you still just aren't good enough. At university, I coded a couple of these little physics demos from scratch: a slalom game, a football game. I loved to distil those competitions down to their most simple, abstracted forms, but the end results felt insubstantial, somehow the polar opposite of the maximally-simulationist sports games you see in FIFA and the like. This game feels like a vehicle to include minigames like that and have them mean something. I'm obviously drawing heavy inspiration from Pokémon—it's just that you're training yourself, instead of some kind of pokemon creacher—and Undertale, which cannily alleviated some of the tedium of turn-based strategy with these little dexterity-based bullet-hell minigames.

Anyway, I'm sworn off programming for the indefinite future, possibly forever, but I wanted to indulge the little part of myself that thinks about video games and still wants to make one eventually. I hope something in the idea entertained you! I might have one or two other pitches, so stay tuned for those.

1080° Snowboarding has a bit of a mixed reception amongst Nintendo fans, with some loving it and others not really getting into it. Unfortunately, I’m in the latter camp but I can see why people do love it. I think a lot of it is to do with expectations: you expect something more whimsical and a bit over-the-top from Nintendo, but 1080 is surprisingly grounded.

1080 is a snowboard racing game with a lot of tricks, with the tutorial being geared towards performing tricks. I think this was the main error of the game, as it sets tricks as something integral to the game, creating the impression that they’ll be important to all modes. After this, people will usually pick the race mode and almost certainly lose.

As Nintendo have gone for a more serious game, tricks won’t help you out here, they’ll just slow you down, any kind of jumping usually will. You need to crouch down and perfect the course to win, even on the easiest difficulties.

The tricks come into play in specific trick modes, and the system is quite robust and it takes a lot of skill to master landing. I just wish that the two modes were integrated a bit more and that tricks were part of races, creating boost – but that would change the nature of the game and isn’t what Nintendo is going for.

1080° Snowboarding is a very solid game, it just isn’t for me.

The first time you complete a course without crashing once, you’ll forgive the game for all the times it made you want to throw your N64 out of the window, because 1080° is a very rewarding game.

well, it'll be a good challenge. i'll pick lucian because i need to work on his character a bit more. anything that's a spoiler or too close to plot elements I'll skip.

🏙 Do they prefer rural or urban environments?

Urban. They grew up in a city and moved into cities. They love to visit other places though and feel most comfortable with the ambient noises of people living in cities.

🚪Are they introverted or extroverted?

I would say they're pretty good mix, with introversion being slightly more prominent. When they're around other people they tend to be more extroverted most of the time.

💤 What's their sleep schedule like?

It's pretty shitty, tbh. They've got two jobs, once of which holds very irregular hours and he's on call for most of the time. His other job at a bookstore holds pretty regular hours but he works instead of sleeping or resting. Good sleep schedules and Lucian haven't heard of each other.

🍽 What's their favorite flavor or dish?

Lucian most enjoys their mother's specialty dish. Other people on their home planet make it regularly since it is a dish deeply rooted into their culture, but they prefer their mother's recipe.

🦠 Do they get sick easily or is their immune system stronger?

They have a pretty strong immune system since their home planet's atmosphere holds special chemicals that Earth's doesn't.

🏀 Have they played sports? What are they best at?

They enjoy snowboarding, boxing, hiking, and parkour. They're best at boxing since they've trained their body to withstand and dole out strong hits (along with the benefit of super strength of course) but they're getting pretty good at snowboarding. They have teleportation as a superpower so I'm hesitant to say they're naturally good at parkour. It does make for some wicked parkour videos though...

🪡 How's the homeliness? Can they consistently do things like thread a needle?

He wasn't taught much housekeeping and tends to watch tutorial videos or ask his neighbor for help for tasks like what chemical to use to clean certain materials. His parents taught him to maintain cleanliness but Earth's culture and his lifestyle keep him busy and working so the cleanliness isn't as big as a priority as it normally would be. He knows his parents and people at home would be disappointed in him but he's way too busy and exhausted to change anything.

🍳 Can they cook?

They often either buy pre-made meals or eat at restaurants. Lucian can cook but it's very average and tends to be bland.

🎵 Favorite genre of music?

indie rock mainly, but they can't get enough of indie music in general.

They wear necklaces, rings, earrings, hair clips and pins, hairbands, and so much more. Accessorizing is totally his thing, along with some jewelry pieces being a very important part of his home's culture.

There’s also an unavoidable pan item that squashes all of your opponents.

This seems to create a situation where one player will often end up in front, with the other three pelting each other, unable to catch up with the leader. It’s a shame as I do like the game’s mechanics, as well as the levels.

Instead of lots of similar looking snow tracks, Snowboard Kids mixes things up with other themes, with the cutesy style managing to not make snowboarding on desert slopes look odd. There are six tracks to start with initially, with three more to unlock.

When you reach the end of the slope, a chair lift will take you back up to the top – however, the barrier will only open if a chair is ready. If second place isn’t ready, they’ll bonk off the railing just after 1st place enters and 3rd place can sneak in while they recover. It’s a nice little mechanic.

There are a few minigames to try out as well. One has you rushing down a slope quickly using the hard-to-steer fan items, one is a target practice challenge and the last is a stunt run – although that doesn’t work very well.

Snowboard Kids is a charming game. It’s not one of the best games on the system, but it’s still worth checking out.

Snowboard Kids’ strengths though are its subtle handling – where diagonal pulls back on the analogue stick see your snowboard’s edge catch the snow, dig in and pull you around – and it’s incredibly competitive racing.
