It's weird being in such a niche group on Tumblr bc I know what my peers (here) like, but I have NO IDEA what would be popular with people in my local area.
Basically I want to start a book + tea club that's also a GSA. We'd have tea parties, read/discuss books, and do activism/good works. I think it would be a fun and good thing.
Allies allowed of course. Especially if we're doing activism + similar bc numbers help.

If you have celiac or otherwise can't eat wheat, btw, and you like bread, I highly recommend investing in a breadmaker. Even the best store-bought gluten-free bread does not hold a candle to the stuff that comes out of our breadmaker, and it's cheaper per slice even when we buy bread mix in single-loaf bags.
This is our breadmaker. Evie got it on sale, but it is an investment. I'm not going to pretend it isn't a chunk of change up front. There are cheaper ones, but the reason I like this one and think it's worth the money:
It has two smaller paddles, where our older bread maker that my mom got us and got destroyed by getting construction dust in it had one big paddle in the middle. This leaves a big hole in the middle of the finished loaf, which makes the bread much less useful for, like, sandwiches.
Zojirushi is not as well-known a brand in the US, but it's a Brand Name in Japan for good reason. Evie's had our Zojirushi rice cooker for over a decade & we had to replace the inner bowl once bc someone used metal utensils in it and scratched the non-stick coating. We expect to use this machine for at least a decade.
You can program your own cycles, which we found really useful. Evie built a custom cycle that removed the punch-down sections (gluten-free bread tends not to rise as much) and that made our perfect loaf.
A lot of bread machines produce very tall, square loaves, which are awkward to slice, store, and make sandwiches with. This produces loaves that make good sandwiches and toast, and the French toast slices don't crowd the pan.
The top heating element on this gives a really amazingly browned top crust that we definitely didn't get on our old machine.
Tumblr media
It's so pretty.
So how is it cheaper in the long run if the machine costs $300+? A little like this:
We use Pamela's Bread Mix bc it's really consistent and easy - you need the bread mix, water, yeast, 3 egg whites, and oil. (We use avocado oil and find it best and most consistent, but regular vegetable oil works!) We buy Pamela's in bulk, and without any subscription discounts or whatever, the $48 pack of 3 bags makes about 11.5 loaves. With the cost of yeast and eggs and stuff, it ends up costing about $4.50 a loaf. (If you buy your yeast in larger bags & store it in an airtight container, you can create less waste and it's also cheaper.)
By comparison, a loaf of Franz GF Bread costs $7-8, and Canyon Bakehouse usually runs about the same.
However, that's not an apples to apples comparison because the Franz loaf is an 18 oz. loaf, whereas our breadmaker makes a 2 lb. loaf. Assuming even the lower-end cost for getting a Franz loaf at the store, an equivalent amount of bread would cost $12.42, and it's not nearly as good.
(Yes, gluten-free bread is fucking expensive. That's part of why I'm writing this post in the first place.)
Anyway, assuming you eat 2 lbs. of bread a week in your house - a breadmaker loaf, basically, to make the math simple - you'll end up spending $7.92 less on bread every week. That means that even at the most expensive cost for the Zojirushi, if you buy it at its highest price (don't do that! wait for a sale!) it'll take 50 weeks - about a year - before the breadmaker pays for itself. If you manage to get it on a 25% off sale (which we did), it pays for itself in about 9 months.
Nine months, I must stress, in which you are eating much more delicious bread.
We tend to go through a couple of loaves a week because toast, sandwiches, and melts are great food for people with low spoons.
Evie and I perfected the Pamela's mix recipe for this particular machine - I'll get it typed up when I'm downstairs next, along with the quasi-babka recipe. (Really, it's like a marble cake and babka and bread had a baby, and it's a family favorite.)
Bread good. The end.

Try to learn about the old foods
Tumblr media
I have most recently started to meal prep, with making a lot of foods and putting them in the freezer. This ended up allowing me to buy the foods in bulk from the local market. And, well... This allowed me to eat some of the foods that the supermarket does not have.
We do have a bit of a problem. And that problem mostly is that we got our food kinda messed up. Because people have lost the connection to the food they eat. But also because of colonialism.
The big thing that happened is, that we lost contact with most local foods. No matter where I go in the "first world nations"... The foods offered to me in the supermarkets are the same - and they also look the same.
This means that a lot of people have no real idea, what foods came from where in the world - but also do not know half of the foods that originated with where they are from, because they are not easily available.
Tumblr media
Tomatoes are an example. Not only did historical tomatoes look and taste very differently from the tomatoes we eat today, but obviously... they came from the Americas. So they are not a food that originated with Europe and was not widely available in Europe until the 1600s. While, yes, the first tomates came here more than a hundred years earlier... it took a while for them to catch on.
Tumblr media
This is parsnip. Another root vegetable that was commonly eaten in Europe for most of history. It has a more intensive taste than the usual carrot - but is also not that different from it, when it comes to consistency and how it is going to cook.
Tumblr media
This is fennel. You might know fennel seeds as a spice or something you might drink as a tea. But the rest of the plant is edible, too, and a surprisingly strong flavored vegetable. It also is very crunchy and makes a really great addition to salads. But it is often not really sold in many places.
Tumblr media
This is the Jerusalem Artichoke, another vegetable that originates within the Americas. To be exact, this is the root of a kind of sunflower. It got its name for being very similar in taste and tecture to the Artichoke. I honestly do not know, though, why it is called "Jerusalem Artichoke", because it does not have anything to do with Jerusalem.
Tumblr media
The Potimarron is a kind of squash that - like basically all other forms of squash - originates in the Americas as well. It has a very nutty flavor. In Europe it was very popular in France for a long while, hence the french name. It has tons of meat and really makes for great stews!
Tumblr media
This is a rutabaga, which originates from somewhere in northern Europe. We do not really know from where. All we know is, that it was a Swedish botanist who cultivates the form we still eat to this day in the 1620s. Which is why it is also called the "Swedish turnip". It does taste like a more bitter carrot, but makes really good addition to stews or can be served stamped.
Tumblr media
This is the Chinese Artichoke and another root vegetable, that as the name suggest originates from China. It was cultivates in China in the late medieval period and has later made its way to Europe, especially France. It has a really sweet and nutty taste and can be eaten raw or in salads. Though there are dishes mashing the vegetable, too.
Tumblr media
These are tigernuts, a vegetable that has been around forever. It originates in southern Europe, southern Asia and northern Africa. It is a dried fruit, with a sweet and earthy taste and it is known a lot in Spanish cuisine, but also in the cuisine of southern Asia.
Tumblr media
Yacon is a root vegetable that originates with Peru, where it is still eaten, while the rest of the world mostly forgot about it. Well, except Japan, where it is currently getting more and more popular. It is a vegetable, but it has a very fruity taste.
I could now go on and name more vegetables from all around the world that were once grown and fed people, but got forgotten more and more in favor of the very limited diet made up of potatoes, corn, potatoes, peppers, cucumber, onion and tomatoes, that is basically what you will get to eat in most places.
And... Well, the thing about it is that... It is not really a good thing that we grow the same stuff everywhere. It is not good for us and it is not good for the environment. It is not good for those foods, either.
I really wish people would try and eat more of the stuff that originates with their region. And that they would eat the not-so-perfect looking foods as well. Because it is gonna be more sustainable in the end.

How would the food supply chain work for city states in in places like Ancient Greece and more recently, the Italian City States? Would they control agricultural land, or would they have to buy food from nearby (or perhaps not so nearby) agricultural regions? What measures would they take in times of war to avoid having their food supply cut off?
Great question!
To answer "How would the food supply chain work for city states," I would answer by answering your other question "Would they control agricultural land, or would they have to buy food from nearby (or perhaps not so nearby) agricultural regions?" by saying: it's both.
Tumblr media
Paradigmatically, a city-state consists of a metropole (the city in question) and the periphery (subordinated lands and territories under the city's control). (Or metropolis and hinterland, if you prefer). To further break this down, the periphery consists of a mix of different lands, including both overseas colonies and tributaries, conquered (and thus lesser and weaker) city-states and their peripheries, and the agricultural hinterland around the metropole. To take just this last category, we can think of the relationship between Athens and Attica, Rome and Latium, Venice and the Mestre and Veneto (everyone always focuses on Venice's overseas empire, but it's rarely remembered that Venice at its height basically controlled all of northeastern Italy and fought Milan for northcentral and parts of northwestern Italy), or Florence and (eventually all of) Tuscany.
How far that agricultural hinterland extended beyond the city's walls depended a lot on transportation technology. Brett Devereaux has very good (but lengthy) explanations of the difficulties of overland grain trade here and here, but the TLDR is that, as a rough rule of thumb, "the price of grain doubles every hundred miles it is moved overland." Those kind of price increases aren't really affordable, so I think if you're looking for a rough rule of thumb, a hundred miles is probably a good maximum radius for an agricultural hinterland, whereas the minimum radius is probably around 7-12 miles (based on medieval urban regulations for agricultural markets), which was roughly how far a cart could travel in a day.
However, certain factors can change the effective radius of the hinterland:
The more and better roads you have, carts can move faster and come from more directions/places, which effectively expands that cart/day radius.
If the city is on a river (and this is one of the main reasons why most historic cities were on rivers, if they weren't on coasts), you can use river-barges to transport grain. Sail-barges could travel 14 miles an hour in good winds, and tow- or pole-barges could do 10-40 miles a day (depending on whether they were going upriver or downriver). Moreover, because of buoyancy, barges can carry much heavier loads than carts, which makes them much more eficient in transporting bulk goods like grain.
Finally, the population density and degree of urbanization matters, because it raises the possibility of making partial trips, because smaller population centers will act as local metropoles and more efficiently bring in grain from rural areas allowing for more efficient routes; also, higher density and urbanization allows for the creation of a network of granaries that allow you to store grain along the way so that you can make partial trips rather than covering the whole distance from the city to the very edge of the periphery.
However, the hinterland usually wasn't enough on its own to supply the city-state, but the same advantages of wind-speed and buoyancy also meant that a long-distance overseas grain trade was absolutely viable in both the Ancient and Medieval worlds. So for example, Greek city-states would draw on grain from southern France, southern Italy and Sicily, the Black Sea, and Anatolia; much of Rome's grain supply came from North Africa and Egypt; and so on. Moreover, as Fernand Braudel points out, the interconnected grain trade of the Mediterranean was the indispensable foundation for southern European urbanism from the Middle Ages through to the Early Modern period, and the geospatial dynamics of that system did not really change that much until the invention of the steam engine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To answer your final question - "What measures would they take in times of war to avoid having their food supply cut off?" - it was usually by a mix of metropolis/hinterland logistics and long-distance trade. A well-organized city-state would have granaries set up both in the city and in the more urbanized areas of the periphery and would have contingency plans to harvest and transport as much grain as possible to the city to use as reserves in a time of crisis. (You'll note that this leaves the periphery in a really bad situation in times of crisis, and this prioritization of the metropole over the periphery is one of the main reasons why it sucked to be in the periphery, which is why there was so much competition over who got to be the metropole and why there were so many rebellions on the peirphery.)
At the same time, if the city-state had naval supremacy over its enemies, it could pretty much indefinitely hold out against its enemies as long as it could maintain a lifeline to the sea. This is why Athens was able to hold out against Sparta for so long during the Pelopennesian War, why Constantinople won so many of its sieges, and why Venice was able to take on most of Europe and still come out on top most of the time.

Here to answer some of your questions!!!
1. Dungeon Meshi is a fantasy manga by Ryoko Kui turned Netflix original anime about a dungeon party looking to save their party member and primary healer, Falin, after she got eaten by a dragon. The Himbo Knight is named Laios and he's Falin's older brother (also he's the leader of the party). The other members include Marcille, a (half) elf magic user; Chilchuck, their half-foot locksmith (he's also a union member, like worker's rights type of union); and their new ally, Senshi, the dwarf that has a love for food and nature. While searching for Falin, Laios showcases his long term desire to eat monster meat and it becomes one of the main gags of the show (hence the name "Dungeon Meshi," Meshi = Food). The world building is super cool and the plot does get more complex later on but it's written very well and I would recommend it.
2. Sorry, idk about this one.
3. In 2014 some people tried to make a Tumblr based convention called "Dashcon" and the event did NOT go well in any way. From poor planning to poor general behavior, it was overall a shitshow. They had a ballpit that was just a kiddie pool filled with plastic balls and at some point someone pissed in it (yuck!)
4. I'm not super informed on this but Colleen Hoover is a Young Adult novelist that writes so... many... books... and they tend to be YA Romance but from what I know they often involve a lot of harmful and romanticized tropes, like abuse. (Side Note: I used to work at a Target and there was a good few months where her novels made up the bulk of our book sales.)
5. There's a tumblr user know as Sixpenceee and she has family that live in Bangladesh. When she went to visit them she mentioned that her family there has a child servant (at the time the kid was 8, I'm not sure if they had more child servants or if the kid is still with them now) and when people were expressing concerns over it she was very dismissive of it and basically saying that while she doesn't condone child labour herself, it's her family that does and that it's a normal thing in that culture (it's really not, because there's a difference between hired help and like, actually buying a school aged child). She also did a bunch of other things people don't like her for but that's the "child slave" part.)
6. The Throckmorton (or Throcky) meme comes from a photo of someone's physics textbook that mentions "your cousin Throckmorton“ who skateboards. People were confused at the name choice which brought up the initial discussion. The joke is that he's everyone's cousin and he shreds on a skateboard like no other.
7. I'll be completely honest and say yes, personally, I do enjoy pineapple on pizza. Lots of people don't. We can all have separate pizzas, it's okay.
Thank you for your heartfelt answers, stranger! also thanks to everyone who replied to my og post, i wasn’t expecting so many detailed answers so I think I understand Tumblr way better now 😭 Hope y’all have a great day, happy April!

i mean this respectfully! How do you provide for yourself + your son w/ no income? Do you have help? My job keeps us financially comfortable but it is sucking the life out of me ignoring and (what feels like) emotionally neglecting my child for a meaningless office job 40+ hrs/wk. IDK if it's worth it anymore but i am terrified of not being able to provide. TY if you answer ❤️❤️❤️
i really like this question bc i constantly want to speak about it on my blog LMAO
i struggle hard. i get about $240 in child support a month, and if u total everything together, my car, my car insurance, gas, diapers, wipes, food after my food stamps run out, it doesn’t last long and i basically have no savings. while saying all this, before anyone attacks me for being poor and having children despite being poor, i wasn’t poor before domestic violence, and i chose my child over everything. i have always taken care of myself and my family, and now i can’t. many such cases. nothing is ever as black and white.
i will say i but my wipes and diapers from target, with a target account, so i earn money back, and whenever i earn enough back, i pick out small little toys. like he has a gardening set from target and a little car, bought entirely with points from buying diapers.
also, i have amazing friends. a little while ago, when my house flooded, a mutual sent me a large sum of money, with that money i was able to shop secondhand and purchase a lot of 2-4t clothes, meat, and things like oats, fruit i can freeze, and i’m still living off that. i do take advantage of the churches food banks (but i only take whole, real foods, never in cans or packages unless they’re like plain no seed oil raisins) not too long ago, i was able to pick out free clothes from a ministry, so i was able to get clothes that actually fit me:)
i relied on my tax return a lot for extra stuff like getting clothes, more activity sets that i don’t have to makeshift (i don’t mind doing this, like using cardboard for a little hands on activity set) but i have been “randomly selected for screening” by the IRS. LOL many such cases. i haven’t gotten my taxes at all.
basically, i struggle, and some times i get scared bc my car is old. i have amazing friends, lin, rayce, my mom LMFAOOO she’ll buy my child’s milk some times and some snacks that she knows i approve of. most importantly, i pray. and i put lots of faith in god to take care of us. i have a water dispenser, where i fill up water for around $5, three 5 gallon water containers last me around a month or so. i make my own laundry detergent, i have a costco card where i buy bulk toilet paper, use flour sacs as paper towels. i literally just try my best and it always ends up working out. i have debt for sure, like i have my car debt. but i don’t worry too much about it. i’m almost finished paying it off. i should really get into selling my precious moments figurines because i have hundreds.
thank u for such a good question. at the end of the day, i know we go without a LOT of things. but i know that gods earth is totally free, we can walk around the park and run for hours, and that’s our entertainment. i would much rather be with my child than put him in some state funded daycare and work for a dead end job that actually doesn’t care about me. i don’t pay attention to what we don’t have, but rather appreciate what we do have and love my sweet baby with all my being. i just want to be present for him. i don’t know if i’m making sense LOL. i’m sorry. but if i had to be honest, i would say, fuck a job, i’d rather be here with my son. i have been looking at farming positions, and maybe helping someone on their farm in the early mornings, i’d want to bring my child with. and at home positions (as crazy as this sounds) aren’t that much better. constantly in front of a computer would drive me absolutely batshit insane… and would still take time away from my baby. i’m just letting go and letting god. i hope this isn’t too crazy sounding :( i could rly ramble on about this topic!!!

I think we could all use something silly,so how about headcanons of the shie hassaikai going bowling?
(Makes me want to go bowling again myself haha! I wasn’t sure if reader was supposed to be inserted into this one or not so I just decided to do the boys only! Also, we’ll open it up with Chisaki if that’s alright!)
~The Hassaikai Goes Bowling~
Tumblr media
headcanon|scenario|imagine|match-up
-He was quiet, too quiet. The old man was either sick or plotting something. Chisaki could tell simply from observing Pops in the moment. It wasn’t as if business was bad lately. In fact, it was the best its been in a while. So because of this, he knew Pops wasn’t upset which only left one possibility...”Oh no.” Pops smiled as he stood at Kai’s office door with a matching T-shirt similar to the one he was clothed in himself. “Why the long face boy?! Cheer up! I’ve decided to bring a few of the men for an outing to celebrate our recent success! Here, we have matching shirts!” The old man tossed the shirt onto Kai’s desk. Chisaki picked it up and shrunk into himself from embarrassment. “The 8 pins of death???” He scowled at the Shie Hassaikai symbol surrounded by bowling pins. “Pops no...please?” The old man frowned before moving to thump Chisaki on the head (just as he did when he was a child). “No complaints! The car is warmed up and we’re riding with Chrono there! Get changed and let’s go have fun eh?”
-Kai silently wished Hari had wrecked the car on the way to the bowling alley to save himself from the outing but unfortunately Hari’s bad driving wasn’t bad enough to kill...yet.
-There was nothing more silly than seeing a faction of the Yakuza out on a bowling fieldtrip. Had it not been for Pop’s kindness then they likely wouldn’t have been allowed into the building. The workers were scared and rightfully so! Katsukame was with them and kept staring the people down. Rappa was no help at all either! However, people respected the old man regardless of the yakuza actions. Therefore, the boys had gotten in with no problem. Kai was being difficult with the show switching. He refused to change out of his shoes and put on the bowling shoes. “Who knows how many other disgusting feet they’ve touched. Absolutely not. No fucking way am I doing this. Pops, I’m going to go wait in the car.” Pops grabbed him by the ear and basically dragged him with him. “You may not want to wear the shoes, but you’re going to spend time with us regardless of the situation young man.” Sometimes Kai just wanted to die when he was treated like a kid again.
-Deidoro found out they served beer at the concession stand and he stood in a very long tine for the tiny overpriced cup. Nemoto didn’t trust the food enough to buy any of it, so the drinks were also off the table. He wasn’t a germaphobe, but he could’ve swore he saw a fly or two back in the kitchen. This didn’t bother Tabe since he came with a pocket full of money and a goal to get everything the menu had to offer. The concession workers had their work cut out for them tonight. Setsuno snuck off to the arcade room when he saw a stuffed animal sitting in a claw machine that he secretly wanted so badly. Unfortunately Irinaka had caught him and ended up recording him the whole time. He’d probably use this against the man as blackmail whenever he needed something. While Setsuno won his plush and snuck it out to the car while he thought no one was looking, a few of the others were entering their initials into the machine for the first round of the game.
POP-Pops
KAI-Kai
ASS-Rappa
TNG-Tengai
CHR-Chrono
HOJ-Hojo
NEM-Nemoto
-”Really...Ass? How childish can you get?” Tengai complained as Rappa chuckled to himself. First up it was Pops. The old man had lost some of his bulk from his younger days but still had the strength to pick up a heavier ball and roll it. Surprisingly he’d taken down a good amount of pins! Rather satisfied with a good start, he stepped out of the way and tapped the ball dispenser while looking at Kai. The young head sighed and finally gave into the activity. He walked up to the balls and frowned before reaching into his pocket and pulling out a disinfectant wipe. He wiped the ball holes good before lifting it up and carelessly rolling it along the way. “Boooooooooo, Overhole can’t bowl for shit!” Rappa teased when the ball crawled its way into the gutter and missed every single pin. Kai glared at him as he took his seat. “Lemme show you how it’s done!!!” Rappa wasn’t even using his strong arm quirk when he let the ball fly. It rapidly knocked down a ton of pins, nearly enough to get a full strike. “Let’s go!!!” Rappa cheered himself on and Pops chuckled (despite Rappa taking the lead over him). Tengai stood up and gently grabbed the ball before standing there and calculating in his head just where he’d need to roll it and at what speed. After about 5 minutes...and Rappa booing him on...Tengai was finally ready to roll the ball. So he did! And it rolled so slow that it did the very same thing Chisaki’s ball did when it went into the gutter. Tengai frowned and a few of the others laughed (excluding Nemoto and Kai of course). “Better luck next time, pal.” Chrono pat his back as he stood up. When Chrono rolled his ball, he got a strike. His form was perfect and his speed was on point. “Hari if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you’ve done this before hmm?” Pops smirked at him. Hari shrugged and smiled. “I’m the bowling master.” Hojo chuckled and rolled his eyes. “I’ll show you the bowling master.”
-By the end of that round/game the person that came out on top had actually ended up being Nemoto! Hari was 2nd, Hojo 3rd, Rappa 4th, Pops 5th, Tengai 6th, and Kai was in dead last. Soon the others joined in the other lane for their game while the first group too a break to eat. All except Chisaki and Nemoto of course. Kai ended up sneaking over to the next lane and joining in the game with the others.
SET-Setsuno
TAB-Tabe
MIM-Irinaka
ASS-Katsukame
TIT-Deidoro
KAI-Kai
“Tit? Are we being absolutely serious right now Deidoro???” The man shrugged at Kai. “What? Ass was already taken by Katsukame so I had to go with Tit.” Deidoro defended himself as if it was a regular thing to do. Setsuno was up first and he was extraordinarily bad at bowling. He had a light ball so it should’ve been faster than the heavier ones. How it’s possible to miss every single time was ridiculous. At least now Kai knew he wouldn’t be dead last. Tabe was up next. He wasn’t too bad at it. Tabe was probably average when stacked against the others. He was okay with that. He didn’t sense any real need for competition and was just happy to be out and about with his group. Irinaka was like Rappa, bowling too hard and too fast but still taking out pins. He might’ve possibly jammed the machine a few times and the workers had to come fix it. “Should’ve stayed in your small form and let them bring the little kids bowling slide out to help you. Maybe then you would’ve stuck out at least.” Katsukame shit-talked the man and Mimic growled at him. Although the power was there, Katsukame still lacked what he needed to be good at bowling. He was too tall and too rough with the ball. He ended up throwing the damned thing instead of rolling it. It’s lucky the workers hadn’t decided to kick him out yet! Deidoro by now was drunk off his ass and rolled the ball across into the other lane somehow and completely fucked up some poor families outing. Pops stood up from his food table and went to apologize to them while Nemoto had to help Deidoro into the parking lot so he could puke into the bushes. Finally it was Kai’s turn. He found that he rather enjoyed bowling once he actually stopped complaining and pouting like a teenager and finally played the game like it was supposed to be played. Turns out he was rather good at it (and Pops of course took lots of pictures since he was proud). “We’ll have to do this again someday.” The old man spoke to himself as he watched his boy get yet another strike.

Food is Fuel.
We all know that food is an essential part of life, but just how important is it really? In this blog we will be discussing macros, and calories, all because nutrition is the first leading factor to your results and physical well-being...
What are macro nutrients and why are they important? They are nutrients used in large amounts used by the body in order to perform it's daily tasks. In these sub groups, we can find protein, carbohydrates and fats. With various misconceptions concerning these essential nutrients, I would like to clear up misinformation.
I think that the most common one talked about amongst the three, especially in the fitness world would be protein. Okay, but why do we talk about protein, what does it really do... Also explained in Biology, proteins are used in order to create new cells during the process of mitosis, and to repair damaged cells, which is exactly what happens when exercising. The muscle fibers are torn and then fixed with the protein we ingest. All of this to say that if you want to get "bigger muscles" eat your protein.
Tumblr media
I typically aim for my bodyweight in protein grams as a daily goal so for me around 130 grams. However, it is very important to know that grams of protein, and calories don't only come from food. All food is calories, yet not all calories come from food... You see, almost all things we consume contain calories, that amount just varies based on the item in question, besides water, or specialized drinks (coke zero, diet pepsi, etc..). Therefore, when we drink juice, add dressing to our salad or add olive oil into a skillet, those are also calories, simply in liquid form, which are the sneakiest kinds of calories. For as good as "budget friendly" could get with protein... Here are some of my favourite "somewhat" budget friendly high protein foods and meals;
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cottage cheese; Personally, after basically force feeding myself to eat cottage cheese over the last year, I think that I have just learnt to enjoy it and I find it easier on the stomach compared to other protein sources. Yet many people seem to not like cottage cheese, perhaps trying to add some honey on it, I have heard was good from others, and some say they enjoy mustard.
Low fat greek yogourt; Another food that some people have troubles with would be low fat greek yogourt. I know for myself this is the case, to me it is the sour after taste, and the texture I think. I enjoy making frozen yogourt however to solve the texture problem. Although higher on the price range, in my experience, there are always atleast one pack on sale.
Chicken breast; The canned ones from costco are affordable and to me not that bad for canned chicken. I have made so may things with this product, such as chicken salad for sandwiches and wraps, butter chicken, chicken pasta and buffalo chicken wraps...
Rotisserie chicken; If canned chicken is not for you, we also buy the Whole Rotisserie Costco Chicken's. For only 8$, the whole chicken will last me, my mom and brother a whole week being used in various meals...
Turkey; Simply turkey no name lunch meat, and even lunch meat variety packs in bulk at costco, yet still available at every grocery store, are great sources of lean protein.
Robert Irvine's protein bars; Best protein bars in terms of taste for sure, having tried so many.
Premier Protein shake, or protein milk and Fairlife (when on sale); My go-to protein packed drinks, that are portable perfect for student life-syle.
EGGS! Specifically egg whites, but I am not that picky; I don't LOVE eggs however awesome and easy source of protein, the calories to protein ratio is great. I like mine "sunny side up" or "scrambled" with ketchup. Deviled eggs are also nice when I have some time to make them. On the other hand fats and carbs are commonly words that scare a lot of people, especially those wanting to lose weight, and to be honest I was one of those people once. However, carbs and fats are your primary source of energy. Carbs being used for quick and rapid acting energy, such as cardio. Yet fats are used for long term energy stock as well as absorption necessary for a healthy body. In order to do the things you love, to talk to your friends and family, perform any physical activity, and to use your brain to its full potential, fats and carbs are NEEDED. I used to track my carbs and fats, but I don't find that necessary anymore... Simply being conscious of their importance and incorporating them in my diet, is now enough for me; intuitive eating. Here are my favourite carb and fat sources;
Whole wheat pasta
English muffins
Fresh fruits
Vegetables
Oats
Cheerios honestly
Oatmeal
Salmon again
Nuts such as cashews, walnuts, peanuts, peanut butter
Avocado
So let this be your daily reminder to go eat your food, some REAL food, and stay conscious about your macro nutrients based on your goal's needs. Eating intuitively is the best way to maintain a good relationship with food while dieting, in my experience!

More thoughts about that cooking post
Americans are reliant on fast food for better or worse, there is no getting around that. Our "lifestyle" promotes long commute times, long work hours, and we don't often have time to cook for ourselves.
But on the flip side, fast food is almost unilaterally poor quality food. Fast food is getting more expensive too, the McDonalds dollar menu of yesteryear is gone, and a lot of places are charging upwards of $5 for a burger that's gonna leave you still hungry an hour later.
I'm not saying "don't eat fast food" or "avoid premade meals". I'm saying that cooking for yourself is a fulfilling skill that will give you healthier food for cheaper, and as you hone your skills you will see that it is reasonably quick and easy. Now more than ever it is a fantastic skill to have.
Find a dish you want to learn to make, something simple, and practice. Make it until you are sick of it then learn to make something else, then repeat. If you need ideas, I will say that some cooking YouTubers have the right idea if you know where to look. (I usually search for "best college student meals" or something along those lines)
If you have a friend or relative who has a Costco membership, see if you can tag along with them and buy in bulk. You can make big batches of stuff and have it as leftovers. Noodles and rice are my go-tos for stretching meals out because they are inexpensive to buy in bulk, store easy, and are rather filling.
90% of improving your speed in a kitchen is improving your prep skills. Learn to get good with a chef's knife, and look up faster ways to break down meat and veg. If you are making larger batches, it helps to find your rhythm and prep all of one thing all at once before moving on to the next, setting stuff aside into bowls or whatever before you start cooking.
Plus, if you have room-mates, you can sometimes pawn off doing dishes afterward on them, lol
One of my go-to meals is fried rice. I spent $25 on a rice cooker, it's been a fantastic investment. Not counting how long the rice cooker takes, (that's basically set and forget anyways), I can make a batch of fried rice that will be dinner and work lunches for a week in under 15 minutes, the whole batch probably cost me about $7. I can make spaghetti and meatballs in about 25 minutes for about the same.
So some disclaimers, I'm not saying "Everyone should learn to cook, no matter what!" Because that's simply not feasible for some people. I'm saying that those that can, should, it is a skill that you can take pride in, and that you can save money with, and you can show off for your friends.

Sucralose aka Splenda Is Genotoxic | June 2023
Me: Big Food sells us low quality at high prices that makes us gradually sicker then Big Pharma sells us high priced meds to control the symptoms until we need Big Hospital and a funeral. Think I'm exaggerating? Read on.
"When we exposed sucralose and sucralose-6-acetate to gut epithelial tissues—the tissue that lines your gut wall—we found that both chemicals cause 'leaky gut.' Basically, they make the wall of the gut more permeable. The chemicals damage the 'tight junctions,' or interfaces, where cells in the gut wall connect to each other.
"A leaky gut is problematic, because it means that things that would normally be flushed out of the body in feces are instead leaking out of the gut and being absorbed into the bloodstream."
"We found that gut cells exposed to sucralose-6-acetate had increased activity in genes related to oxidative stress, inflammation and carcinogenicity,"
"To put this in context, the European Food Safety Authority has a threshold of toxicological concern for all genotoxic substances of 0.15 micrograms per person per day," Schiffman says. "Our work suggests that the trace amounts of sucralose-6-acetate in a single, daily sucralose-sweetened drink exceed that threshold. And that's not even accounting for the amount of sucralose-6-acetate produced as metabolites after people consume sucralose."
Harvard says: "Some studies show that leaky gut may be associated with other autoimmune diseases (lupus, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis), chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, arthritis, allergies, asthma, acne, obesity, and even mental illness."
Splenda.com says: "Today, the Splenda brand is the most recognizable and iconic low-calorie sweetener brand in the world, having sold more than 100 billion yellow packets since its launch in 1992."
Michael Zeece, in Introduction to the Chemistry of Food, 2020 says: "Granulated sucralose is mixed with fillers to provide a measure for measure substitution with table sugar (sucrose). The powdered form of sucralose contains 90% bulking agents such as maltodextrin, that are a metabolizable form of carbohydrate. A 50/50 mixture of sucrose and sucralose, plus a bulking agent, is available for baking applications. This mixture reduces caloric content and enables browning reactions in baking applications."  Source
Me: Wow. Ok. 50/50 sugar/Splenda plus bulking agents for baking. Would that mean commercial baking? Processed foods? YES!!!
"Sucralose is also highly stable at elevated temperatures that are often used in food, beverage, and drug manufacturing processes so that product sweetness levels can be maintained following cooking, baking, and/or pasteurization. Sucralose also has excellent stability in low-pH products so that sweetness degradation is not a determining factor in the shelf-life of such products."
FDA says "Sucralose is a general-purpose sweetener found in various foods, including baked goods, beverages, chewing gum, gelatins, and frozen dairy desserts."
By weight, Sucralose is about 600 times sweeter than sucrose (sugar).
Me: Even if I don't buy or use Splenda or drink diet sodas there is a good chance that I'm still eating more than 0.15 micrograms of sucralose in "shelf stable" cookies, pastries, bread or ice cream. Big Food cuts in Sucralose/Splenda because it gives big sweetness and probably costs less than natural sugar/sucrose.
The FDA approved it for general use in 1999. They suggest it for diabetic people! No wonder Celiac Disease, Crohn's disease, and irritable bowel syndrome have steadily increased.
Never mind the Leaky Gut diseases or the malignant tumors, Splenda is calorie-free. /facepalm

You may be old and overly domesticated when you find yourself immoderately excited over finally getting another large grocery delivery. 🥴 And a pretty big one, by recent standards.
This time, from a new place: Willys! Haven't managed to try them in person yet, since there aren't any locations really convenient by public transport. But, the prices and selection did look pretty good.
Some ongoing weird disability-related food insecurity issues probably help too, yeah. Along with going so long without local bank accounts/BankID to make basic stuff like buying food myself much easier. I've mostly been relying on Mr. C to buy groceries, which has been less than ideal in multiple ways.
But yeah, we were starting to run pretty low on some basic staples, and there were some things that I specifically had a taste for. (Including more seasonal vegetables and some hopefully decent cooking apples!) And now we have most of that.
I even have a decent-looking chuck roast to work with (högrev here)--which was trickier to find than you might expect in the UK! Some other cuts decent for similar uses, but not what I would call chuck. Our usual grocery store nearby has an awesome-looking meat counter, and there's also a halal butcher shop that stays pretty busy in the same shopping center. Now that I can mostly reliably eat a better variety of stuff, I keep wanting to check both of those out more. But, for now? Some packaged högrev bought sight unseen is pretty damned welcome!
Tentative plans over the next few days, spoon supply allowing:
* For tonight: some easy sauerkraut and weenies, with mashed potatoes. I like to fry a chopped onion in with the sausage pieces, also season with some pepper, and let it all simmer covered for a while like for regular cooked kraut.
* Mix up some basic bulk pseudo-sausage with a pack of ground pork, to let sit a day or two before hopefully turning out some biscuits and gravy! 😋 (Not the exact seasoning blend I tend to throw in, and no need for any sugar IMO. But, the same general style. I don't think I've ever tried a recipe from Homesick Texan that I didn't enjoy, though!)
* Beef stew with cornbread! And probably freeze the other half of that chuck roast.
* Do something with most of those apples. Possibly apple crisp, because that's both easy and good. We should also have everything for that, besides some ice cream to go along with it.
We also have some turnips, which I'm glad are much easier to get hold of here. (Though I really want the greens too!) Will probably use some in that stew, but still not sure what I want to do with other few.

Shinigami and Food
a brief writeup I will only loosely clean up from Discord commentary:
food in Soul Society is reishi, not kishi, because flora and fauna in Soul Society are reishi. we only ever see Shinigami eating kishi while in gigai. so reishi soul bodies (konpaku) need reishi food and gigai can (at least partially) translate kishi to reishi to nourish an empowered soul (for example Isshin needs seemingly little recovery time). but reishi is only part of the food equation
everything has a soul and everything thus has reiryoku and reiatsu. it just isn't notable for most things. the more complex a thing, the more reiatsu it has, and living things are complex. in other words, you're eating their reishi, but you are also literally eating their reiatsu too. presumably, the fresher the food, the more reiatsu it has because reiatsu naturally leaks out of reishi over time (unless reii grade is high enough)
so Kirio basically invented the reiatsu equivalent of fortified bread, by infusing reiatsu into foods artificially:
Tumblr media
overly-processed or preserved foods are still reishi, but are reiatsu-poor. this presents a problem like how the Japanese aristocracy overly-polished their rice which, notably, totally fucked the Japanese in WW2 because their officers kept dying from malnutrition due to overly-polished rice
so you would expect nobles not only get tastier and rarer foods but fresher foods, with more reiatsu, thus making it easier for them to develop power. and you can also imagine that Soul Society’s flora and fauna are not only reishi-rich compared to Earth’s (which are by definition reishi-impoverished) but also that they have higher ambient reiatsu. there may indeed be flora and fauna with naturally high reiatsu concentrations. like you kill the dangerous and wily Hyper Spirit Wildebeest (or whatever) and eat its flesh and organs and you can get a heavy infusion of reiatsu from it
as I said elsewhere: Shinigami are like Hollows, but more indirect. Hollows just recognize that the most concentrated sources of reiatsu to eat are humans, and go for cannibalism and Shinigami do this more circuitous thing because most of them are of the opinion that cannibalism is bad
(special shoutout to @kenpxchi‘s headcanons about what Kenpachi got up to in Rukongai because it would truly explain a lot about him actually)
so basically Shinigami Economics dictates that the rich and powerful get more power at least in part by buying better food, and in Bleach power comes at least partially from eating stuff because eating stuff is the most basic expression of Nietzschean willpower
Yoruichi ate a bunch of stuff to recover from fighting Yammy:
Tumblr media
and then seriously bulked up, and was probably busy doing so after she resolved to get back into shape, which I’ve touched on before but I’ll get into more detail about later

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate! And happy Sunday-hopefully-a-three-day-weekend to those who don’t.
Please forgive the janky photo but it is nearly 3am here and I am Secret Santa Sneaky putting up the stockings, hung by the gas fireplace with some faint suggestion of care.
Tumblr media
The amusing thing is that these stockings are mostly filled with things that Mum and I bought together, in person, almost a month ago, while getting the traditional holiday panetón at Cost Plus World Market. (They have the best flavor options!)
We also picked up a few fun trinkets while we were there. Mum has a solar powered waving Queen Elizabeth that she got years ago when living in England. It sits on the windowsill of the kitchen, and because we live in such a sunny place, I’ve grown accustomed to the click-click as her hand swivels back and forth.
Anyway, Mum’s version is basic blue. But we found this one at World Market that is gold! So fancy! So now we can have dueling waving queens.
We also saw a candy dispenser that is shaped like a sloth and poops out the candies. How can anyone resist that, especially since a major highlight of the family trip to Peru last summer was holding a baby sloth. We had a coupon for a free ornament so we also got an alpaca in honor of that trip, too, which is peeking out of Mum’s stocking.
The bulk of the stocking is candy and fuzzy socks (that will genuinely be a surprise, since this was something I bought on my own and Mum has no idea about them!). Oh, and dog butt magnets because we can always use more magnets, right? Plus, dog butts, heh.
Anyway, we’ve been joking around for the last month that we’re not really going to do much for Christmas. Splurge on a fancy-ish meal that will provide plenty of leftovers, and relax with lots of holiday movies. No family. No travel. No gift exchange.
We have a couple of big trips planned next year which is our main gift to each other (and they are Disney-adjacent, hence my crass capitalist choice in sock ware). Although, tbh, the biggest gift we can give to each other is finally feeling like we’re in a place of stability, something we haven’t had for over three years.
ANYWAY. Mum surprised me 3 years ago with a few things when we said “no gifts.” Then 2 years ago I surprised her with some inexpensive but thoughtful items (that had been purchased before we said, “no gifts,” which we eventually did say once I was laid off the Monday after Thanksgiving). Then last year, we agreed that yep, this time we really meant it, “no gifts” — and there was a small stocking with some treats in it on my chair come Christmas morning.
Then this year we said “no gifts” yet bought some fun little dumb things while out on our one true “Christmas outing” we had all year — we’re frugal enough, doggone it, and can enjoy the occasional pointless, frivolous trinket.
So it’s silly, putting things we already know about in a stocking. But I still got some glee at making sure I squirreled away the shopping bag we promised not to touch until Christmas, then stopping at Target on my way home from a work thing and giggling over the ridiculous stocking choices, and buying fuzzy Christmas socks on sale that I know Mum will enjoy, even if she only wears them once.
Oh, yeah, and we never got around to decorating because we just didn’t want to deal with sorting out the holiday boxes (that we’ve been meaning to organize and pare down, once our households merged, yet we still… haven’t…). So this is the only touch of “Christmas” you’ll see at the house.
But I have the whole week off, and we shall indulge our whims with food we don’t normally eat, attempt to assemble an Eiffel Tower gingerbread house (also purchased at World Market, because seriously we don’t get out much at all any more), and watch a random sampling of excellent and terrible holiday movies from various streaming services.
This is the first Christmas in years I haven’t felt vaguely (or majorly) depressed and anxious, focusing all my energy on simply surviving — and I choose to relish it, silly stockings and all.

one of the hardest things from becoming accustomed to living in the truck was just drinking water regularly!!
it was so weird trying to remember to drink water, we were both so dehydrated
i had originally packed us a few reusable water bottles, and i've seen people with those, but you'd have to stop at truck stops like twice a day at least to be able to fill them
most rest stops have only basic drinking fountains where you have to hold the bottle sideways to fill it and can't even fill it all the way
and sometimes truck stops only have hot water dispensers for tea, so if you wanted cool water you're out of luck
so we've arrived at just buying packs of plastic water bottles, like the 24- or 36- packs when we can get them
this allows us to have bulk water on hand, keep track of our water supply (see visually very clearly when it's getting low), and (tmi but hey it's part of truck life) have a steady supply of reasonably sized pee bottles
sometimes we've had to buy gallon jugs but with my chronic fatigue those are incredibly difficult for me to actually drink out of, and also are cumbersome and hard to store nicely. worst case if a store doesn't have big packs of water we usually just buy enough individual bottles for a day. and do something fun like add gatorade to the mix
im aware some people try to do more of an rv style thing and have a water tank and a bucket/sink sort of thing going on, maybe even a little mobile toilet situation. but with the litter box and cat carriers and supplies of dry and frozen food, we just don't have space for that kind of thing
so we tip the packs of water bottles onto their side so it takes up less floor space, and we and the kittycat have plenty of water
i think coming to terms with not being able to do as many environmentally friendly/sustainable things while living in the truck was also part of figuring out the lifestyle, and how to make sure we have our survival basics taken care of. but once we are living fully on the road and not hanging onto an apartment, our carbon footprint will be pretty small. except the running of the actual truck itself, but somebody would be driving this thing if we weren't here anyways, and we do need trucks to be driven in order for people to be able to go purchase things like reusable water bottles in any case
i'm mostly saying to anyone reading this who is considering doing otr trucking, be prepared to be flexible and try different things. getting your basic needs met on the road might not look like what you thought it would at first, even if you did a lot of research, since the whole comfort thing will vary so much from person to person. plus a lot of info about life on the road is more focused on rv and van life people which has some overlap but is not the same
