the timeline is changing, the universe is shifting, but whatever is happening now is the result of lu guang slipping. he had realized, after all this indeterminable time, that he'd also been altered to lengths unidentifiable. somewhere along the way of trying to save cheng xiaoshi and himself, lu guang has lost something.

he isn't sure how to get it back, just that it sits in every arm's distance between him and cheng xiaoshi. it's there in the tentative silences, sharper dissonances, and what wasn't there in the beginning. then again, lu guang has no right to speak of a start he chose to abandon.

mercifully, cheng xiaoshi is at least set on finding and sticking to lu guang in every timeline. it doesn't seem to matter if lu guang crosses countries or tries to hide, cheng xiaoshi is still bound to find him and lu guang is bound to accept that. they always have the photo studio. things are always good for a time; so good, that lu guang can recall why he's dived so many times despite the way it always ends.

but as of now, lu guang is teetering on the edge of a cliff. he doesn't know how long it is to fall down, and he doesn't even know if he's falling yet. all he knows is that the cliffside is made by his own doing.

it's been a concerning while since cheng xiaoshi and lu guang have impeded on the gap between friends and more than friends, which isn't the most high priority thing, nor even an original part of the timeline, but lu guang frets nonetheless.

he already wakes up often enough believing that he's lost cheng xiaoshi to the inevitability of time and the universe; it's an entirely different level of pain to consider losing cheng xiaoshi in life as is.

maybe it's lu guang's divine punishment though.

he fails to smile or laugh at jokes normally, can't return hugs with ease, and misses his cues to come clean. he could always confess. he could always stop lying. it's just a poor excuse to blame lu guang's dishonesty on the brightness of cheng xiaoshi's presence.

lu guang would say he's sorry, but he's forgotten the word and how it sounds in his mouth. he doesn't know how to make the lies sincere anymore. he thinks that cheng xiaoshi might be able to tell. he kind of wants the universe to see right through him with how time has stretched him paper thin. he's tired, it hurts; lu guang is the only one who can make it stop, and yet, cheng xiaoshi being alive is like a drug in itself. how is lu guang supposed to surpass a present with a dead cheng xiaoshi if he can't even deal with the mere memory?

so he guesses the broken, frayed reforming of their relationship is another given now. lu guang doesn't know how to repair these sorts of things. cheng xiaoshi is better at it, at loving, at grieving. he knows what to make of bad situations. meanwhile, lu guang can only try to save cheng xiaoshi again whilst ignoring the gaps between them.

desperately, he staves off the what ifs' in his head, the doubts that wonder if cheng xiaoshi will ever fall in love with him again; the parts of lu guang that secretly already know he'll never be the person cheng xiaoshi first fell in the love with ever again.

After the 15-year timeskip, Aaron feels guilty every time he looks at Dante because the longing in his eyes won't go away, so he keeps helping Nana with anything and everything as a nonverbal apology. He'd help her bake, go out and pick fruits for her, play with Nekoette more, anything as long as he can communicate how sorry he is that he can't let go of Dante, even if Nana doesn't know.
