Long 4am ramble because I’m thinking a lot about Kirk and McCoy in TMP

Because for Spock it was very much the culmination of his character, his big joyous epiphany. And in that way it was also a very happy occasion for Kirk, his Vulcan is back and he’s finally learned to accept his feelings? (the feelings for him!) Glorious day.

But then you look away from the Spirk lens and start observing how Kirk treats McCoy, as well as how he treats the ship and its crew. And the movie makes it very plain that he is desperately trying to relive his glory days. To take back what he feels he needs. (he is aware of it to an extent, which creates a nice depiction of a deeply selfish character who conscious of it and trying to overcome. (And of course Kirk accepting that Space is where he belongs directly parallels Spock’s journey of emotional acceptance- but that’s a discussion for another time))

But even with that awareness, all of the “bad” that comes from it seemingly gets brushed under the rug by the euphoria/mania of his reuniting with Spock (and ig the unification of V’Ger and Decker but that is in of itself a Spock/Kirk parallel, so the point remains).

If you focus on the movie from McCoy’s perspective it’s just sad and melancholic.

Kirk uprooted McCoy from a retirement where, it seemed, he had the space and the freedom to explore himself and his identity and the vastness of life’s experiences. All to trim him back down to exactly how he was while serving under Kirk. And McCoy accepts it.

McCoy’s introduction in the movie is loud (in every sense, the yelling, the outfit) and you can SEE him quiet in response to Kirk. He sees that demanding outstretched hand and reins himself in, concedes, and the next scene we see him in he’s that perfect image of what Jim wants him to be. (What he “needs” him to be)

From then on, throughout nearly the whole movie, his presence becomes a reassurance. There are so many times where he shows up, checks on Kirk, and quietly leaves again. So many times where he’s shown as an observer. And the problem that makes it all sadder is that if you look past the surface-level grouching you can tell he holds no grudge, no anger for any of it.

And I think the angle is that he is accepting his place there as well. Maybe it’s that the experience-chasing he’d been doing in civilian life was to compensate for the void that not being a part of Jim’s crew left him with. That he truly does enjoy the role he’s been given. But that acceptance feels so jagged and bitter as a viewer. The happiness of this reunion cannot magically fix the fact that he wasn’t given any choice in it.

Up until your version, I actually refused to read any omegaverse. (NOT for lack of trying ... my god. so many disappointing attempts.) And even then I didn't start UtB until I had run out of literally everything else you'd written and the apprehension was real. I was staring at that omegaverse tag with a 'don't go where I can't follow' look of distress.

Should have known you'd absolutely kill it though. So so so good. It also helped me figure out how to approach other people's omegaverse fics/writings. Alpha/Alpha pairings actually did give me what I was looking for but never found before.

A lot of my disappointment with the whole genre before came from how the heats were depicted. Not to generalize, but a lot of writers use the heat's as a way to just ... delete personalities in a way that is not engaging to read in the least... characters reacting to each other is 90% of what I'm looking for in fics, not 'Alpha 1' and 'Omega 2'.

ANYHOW, all of that is to say that Underline the Red is my /favourite/ of your rainbow stories so far. I love the world-building in general, but oh my god. The dynamic between Faber and Caleb is so phenomenal. Beta's so rarely get a spotlight and it's just like 'yeah what would it be like to be in this heavily binary world where nothing seems to be made for you'

Tbh, I agree with you on a lot of your points.

There are aspects of heats which are my least favourite thing about omegaverse. Even less appealing to me than mpreg. I understand why they're other's favourite things, but the lack of coherent thought, the inherent dehumanisation* of going 'alpha!' 'alpha!' or 'omega! my omega!' (which to me often sounds as silly as 'man! man!' or 'woman! my woman!'), etc. are kinky for some people, for sure, but for me it's the opposite of appealing. I can only really handle a little of this in like, noncon / dubcon PWPs, but not in long stories.

*There are many different ways to express this kind of fantasy/irl kink. I actually don't mind some of them. But this one I don't like at all.

My favourite kind of heat is a heat that doesn't go smoothly (which is why I've written so many of them, lmao), and my favourite kind of omegaverse relationship and sexual development happens outside of heats (which is why I write so much of that!) But even when I do write heats, there's aspects I deliberately omit because I just don't prefer it, so it sounds like on that level our preferences mostly align. (Not to say that any other version is bad for the folks who write and love it! It's just bad for me, and I don't want to read it).

I also avoided omegaverse for a long time because the ones people tend to recommend have a lot of the most standard tropes, some of which I enjoy, and some of which I find empty and meaningless. 'I'm so aroused I no longer think of you as a person but as a generic vessel / knot' is not appealing to me, but I can see how it appeals to others (and I can see other, different interpretations of that to mine, appealing to others too). 'I'm so aroused that I have no choice but to surrender to something I'm going to loathe afterwards' is appealing to me, and I can see why that doesn't appeal to others.

Tbh I do fall into the trap of vastly preferring alphas and omegas over betas, but I like Faber, he's interesting to me, and tbh it turned out all I had to do to overcome my broad dislike was like, just make a character I enjoyed, lol. Give him enough angst and I'm there!

I also generally enjoy crunchier pairings. I like the mindfuckery of alpha/alpha pairings, and I do think there is really great tropey omegaverse out there. But as soon as a fic is tagged with something like 'knotdrunk' I know I'm not likely to enjoy it. There's only so far I can go on the deep dehumanisation that seems innate to the 'standard vanilla heat.'

From an objective, analytical standpoint, there's a lot of things you could find appealing as a kink depending on how you hooked into it (i.e. 'someone is so consumed with me they lose all rational thought and can't see anyone but me' or 'I am just an object of this person's desire and they are going to use me and even if that's scary I'll still enjoy it' or 'I have realised who my true owner is' etc.), and to a degree, I can get behind some of it, but once we get to the 'I am no longer saying your name but a generic word that applies to everyone in this secondary gender, and you no longer matter as an individual, it's just your knot that counts' and vice versa, I have to dip. It's also why I tend to gloss past writing (consensual, smooth) heats in any great detail myself (people who want that from me are going to be disappointed). As a character-focused writer, in omegaverse, this is generally where you find the least characterisation, 404 error - Character Not Found.*

*It's not always this way, but it's often this way (as in, I have encountered it in hundreds of fics and published works now, and given I only read m/m or t4t or some permutation of both I dread to think how prevalent some of this stuff is in cishet), especially in generally 'No Archive Warnings Apply' omegaverse fics.

Everyone's preferences in omegaverse are different, what I like about it, honestly, is that there is plenty of room for me to write my own versions of the tropes that I enjoy, and that I'm not alone in that. I can omit mpreg, I can omit the 'call me alpha' trope, I can omit soulmates, I can keep 'claims can hurt omegas', I can include alpha/alpha and beta(omega)/alpha pairings, I can fuck with secondary gender, I can keep the dystopia part, I can keep the fluid play and the knots, I can have knots happen outside of heats, I can have 'alpha voice' and make it multi-layered, I can invent hormones and glands and give them names, etc. And someone else who hates everything I love, can do the opposite, and that will still be omegaverse if it happens to have alphas and omegas!!

This is why I think people who dismiss omegaverse outright probably just aren't aware of how vast the umbrella is yet. That's understandable, there are people who dismiss anime because all they've ever seen is shounen, and they just literally don't know there's so many genres within that broad umbrella/technique that will actually appeal to them. You can't know what you don't know, and all! I used to be the same, because my first encounters with omegaverse were like 'oh no, this is like, vanilla dehumanisation. I hate it.' Thankfully I found my way to the subversive humanising side, and I love it here. (ETA: Vanilla dehumanisation is actually pretty damned subversive at times too, I just don't find it hot, lmao).

Anger issues and openly expressing it constantly tends to come to ppl as a coping mechanism, a protective defense because if you have a bigger bark than everyone else you will be heard no matter how small you are. I think his anger issues come from how small he is as well as just a cover, not being a main toon and likely having heavy difficulty making friends, being literally MADE to be the bully.. its all he has to be close to people in any resemblance of the word. I feel like he does like hating genuinely, because its protection. But he does get hurt when people distance back from him or actively ignore him. But that hurt turns around into begging for their attention to be heard how HE hates THEM so of COURSE HE ISNT MAD!!! Cause THEY SHOULD BE MAD!

I love him, I also have a hc that when he was made he was made like a stuffed animal basically so if he punches ppl it wouldnt actually hurt them in the slightest. So in any physical fights he carries contraband weapons or otherwise is demolished by other toons.

BUT… Finn saw how Shrimpo needs to take his anger out through words/actions and ever since realizing is one of the only toons to if hit by shrimpo, use his power (the water splash) to look like shrimpos fist sent him FLYING

Love Shrimpo….Anger is super difficult to deal with and being in a tiny body MADE to be harmless… he NEEDS to let it out through actions and words.

I like to think if he just had someone whod listen to him, overtime his harshness’ll simmer down into a genuine care as he gets quieter before building it up again. Hes terrible w/ words but his ACTIONS??? They speak SO loud.

Glisten having CANONICAL self image issues is everything to me and you bet I took and ran with it, I LOVE THINKING ABOUT HIM!!!

I think he likely has RSD which he overcompensates for with a self inflated image, but in reality no matter how many compliments he receives it will never outweigh the perfect image bar he set for himself, something he will never be able to reach, always falling short and always desperately trying to cover up who he sees as useless for it </3

at the end of the day what really gets past that for him isnt just words but shows that he is enough just how he is. People seeing him not for the showstopper he wants to be but the quiet nerd with a love for reading and pretty things. I think he definitely hides parts of himself he thinks dont “fit his role” or are things to be ashamed about. But being seen for those things AND loved for those things is what’ll actually help him grow and he doesnt want to acknowledge that

Fav main, I love thinking about his dynamic so much. Its so easy for ppl to just see him as the “helpful” one, but he is so much more than that lemmie tell you. He is overworked, and the only one causing that is himself. Constantly helping others at the expense of himself because he cant see that the true way to grow together is if you show your own insecurities in the process. He will rather die than show anyone if hes hurt, or if he needs help. He will mentally run himself into the ground just to get a glimpse of a friend smiling. But instead of focusing on himself, he does ANYTHING to avoid the building issues hes not confronting within himself, insecurities and shames. So he helps others, and NEEDS to keep his bakery exactly how he likes it. If anything is slightly amiss, if a friend is hurt? It is a personal failure for HIM. He stakes his own worth on his friends stabilities and its constantly to his own detriment

The interactive aspects of tetro pink and staffside are so cool and i love feeling like I’m a part of tetro in some small way. I’m feeling so many emotions right now that I don’t know how to put into words, which is wild considering that this is only the first of tetro’s three parts. Alterpathy: The practice of identifying, categorizing, and identifying with fictional and imagined illnesses due to a disconnect between your external and internal understanding of yourself - while also not intending to appropriate, romanticize, or cause harm to a minority group.

identifying, categorizing, and identifying with: making flags, coining terms, and posting about your experience. alterpathic conditions can also be divided into a couple of categories, which are detailed later in the post.

disconnect between your external and internal understanding of yourself: for some reason, even though you're aware that this isn't how conditions that affect the body work, you experience a reoccurring condition that is serious to you. this can be because of atypical dysphoria, delusions, alternate beliefs, delusions, or anything else similar.

appropriation, romanticism, causing harm: this doesn't mean that actions you take are automatically excused of harm, but it's a silent agreement and nodding between yourself and others that you're not trying to come from a place of ableism/bigotry.

ignoring/excusing bigotry: examples of ignoring/excusing bigotry would be implying that someone can "coin" a real mental illness/other condition in the same way you can coin a gender, implying you can "transition" into a congenital condition with subliminal videos or otherwise, and anything else that goes against science's understanding of illness and neurodivergence. there's nuance to this, of course, because the psychology field isn't an absolutely perfect field that can do no wrong. it's up to the person coining/the person identifying to look at the situation and act accordingly. this part is like a sort of disclaimer. someone using alterpathic terms is nodding and saying "yes, i know, i know, just let me talk about my experiences and have a space to feel accepted."

examples of situations that might bring you to identify this way:

being a fictive/kin/introject/etc of a character who had a disease or type of injury that was invented for their media, like zombie diseases, cyberbrain sclerosis, the cutie pox, hanahaki disease, etc, and feeling affected by it in any way

experiencing something in your system's headspace that's like a reoccurring illness

feeling like you are afflicted with a condition that's not known to affect human bodies, only animal ones, due to atypical dysphoria, delusions, alterhumanity, or any other situation

having limbs like wings, tails, horns, etc in your headspace with some kind of damage to them that causes you phantom discomfort

feeling anxiety/frustration because you're experiencing something on a metaphysical level which you know your physical body isn't experiencing, but it's still very serious to you and possibly even hurting your quality of life

grammar:

alterpathy: 1) the practice of naming/making flags/categorizing these, "here's my mogai blog and here's my alterpathy blog"; 2) this kind of condition. "my depression and my alterpathy make it hard for me," "i might have an alterpathy but i'm not sure"

alterpathic: descriptor that describes these conditions. "it's alterpathic," "how to cope with alterpathic..."

inspiration and some context on why we're coining this

this was largely inspired by the r*dqueer term of x*nomalady, because after the system looked into it, we did see a lot of cases of people who were genuinely experiencing something serious, but didn't seem to think that there was any space other than the rqc that would be accepting of someone identifying with a disease that technically didn't exist. these cases were mixed in with genuinely ableist people who displayed the behaviors i listed above in "ignoring/excusing bigotry," which feels wrong to me, and i think that people who aren't intending to harm anyone deserve their own terminology and space.

crossover

there is some crossover with dissodic, desirdae, intusui, ethix +etc good faith terms related to feeling like you have, internally have, desire, or identify with something you technically don't, and i think that's fine. you can identify with an alterpathic term and the equivalent of it in another term umbrella, that's fine. do whatever fits best to describe your experiences.

so, is this just x*nomalady but Good?

not exactly, i don't want this to be thought of as a 1-to-1 anti rq equivalent, because again, some x*nomalady people are just coining """disorders""" for fun because they think you can do that in the same way you would a gender. this is both an identity/experience, and a silent agreement to be critical of what you're putting out into the world. this is also not focused on "coining" new conditions unless that's really necessary. (not necessary = making up a new illness for funsies. necessary = putting a name to a reoccuring condition you've been experiencing in headspace, etc.)

in the same way that terms like dissomei and intusui aren't 1-to-1 r*dqueer terms but Good and are separate term umbrellas that have their own nuances and notes, this is a good-faith alternative for people genuinely experiencing this kind of thing.

ippiki au: minor characters edition

first things first: here look at everyone. dont mind the inconsistency of style, i took a 4 month break in the middle of these okay

and now! lore and stuff will be under the cut to not clog up everything

ill include everyones images a second time before their specific lore just to help keep track of things i hope you dont mind that. also implied vbs event spoilers (specifically for light up the fire) when you get to radder, if thats a concern at all

mizuki- deer. a runaway from an arena with lower security, met ena early into their escaped days and theyve stuck together since. their antler broke while in the arena, and they havent shed yet to grow back evenly. whether the white spots are because of their deer species or the fact that theyre still a teenager or just because of weird hybrid things is up to viewer interpretation (aka i never really settled on a specific type of deer for them). unfortunately the antlers make them pretty visibly trans and they dont really like having them, but at least most other hybrids dont seem to care too much.

ena- mountain lion. grew up in the same lab as akito, and to neither of their knowledge, they are actually related (ena was still somewhat of an older sister figure to him, along with some of the others from his group. they havent seen each other in a few years since ena got taken to an arena. to each other they might as well be dead). not the biggest fan of their current situation, but shes trying to make the best of it.

they live together currently in the undercity, living somewhat steadily off of odd jobs. its not the greatest life, and maybe one day theyd like to leave, but for two teenage girls, its the best theyre managing for now, and it certainly could be a lot worse. they both couldve never escaped their arenas and died there.

haruka- domestic shorthair cat (but often mistaken for being a russian blue... shes just a regular gray cat with blue eyes). an ex-feral (captured as a child) turned show pet with a reputation for her cool charm. while shes taken to this life with relative ease, she misses her home from far outside the city and her childhood best friend who got captured at the same time and separated from her (she cant help but fear that an is probably dead, sent to an arena for her rowdier personality. shed like to hope otherwise, but the odds are against her)... also yes, her outfit mainly looking like her asrun outfit is intentional.

minori- goat. i forgot her sideways pupils here but she has those, just like kohane and luka. a childhood friend of kohanes, raised in the same lab, but was bought as a show pet instead. no one really knows why, besides her enthusiastic personality having its strengths in the idol-like niche of show pets. admires haruka from a distance, but theyve never had a chance to properly meet. maybe one day...

nene- longhaired fold cat x canary. part of a private project attempting to create non mammalian hybrids by balancing them out with known stable hybrids, and shes one of the first semi successful ones. she might have survived to a reasonable age so far, but not without complications. shes prone to occasionally unstable health and has some speech issues, mostly caused by the bird parts of her not mixing well with everything else. the feathers are cute, but at what cost? although being kept in a very restrictive environment isnt doing her any favors either...

technically shes not even a main part of the au! shes got her own side storyline with wxs lol

kotaro- racoon. literally just some guy. from the same town as haruan, but hes just been there the whole time. probably the only character here who hasnt experienced the horrors to some extent. not actually relevant to the au besides like oh he exists he might briefly show up, but i wanted to draw him because i had design ideas

souma- domestic dog, some kind of mutt. suffered a combination of severe injuries throughout his time in an arena and during their escape, leaving him with a nasty mess of scars across his body as well as a mostly paralyzed arm and a noticeable limp. hes trying to stay positive despite that, after all theyre free! but its tough sometimes, he cant help but feel bad that hes slowing down their pace in traveling.

arata- caracal. from the same arena as souma, but escaped much more unscathed, his past injuries are nowhere near as severe. heard stories about the outside world somewhere and is now determined to find somewhere worth living out in the wasteland with souma. hes not exactly friendly to people they cross paths with, but its mostly out of caution to protect both of them.

fun fact i had to redesign soumarata partially because i just wasnt satisfied with their designs (i had made some very early on into the au) and partially because me and my friends realized souma is the taller one (hes like. slightly taller than touya? while arata is only taller than akito) and i had it the other way around before.

nagi- maned wolf. a popular face around town, and one of their most successful participants in various resource gathering missions (it isnt uncommon for hybrid towns to have members who will steal things for their towns from supply trains that go out to human towns in the wasteland and nagi was often a fan of going on those). she liked to get out and explore the wasteland! sometimes shed let an (and less often, haruka as well) tag along with her so they could see more of the world while still supervised, but that led to her own downfall. a mission went wrong, the kids got caught, and she got killed trying to save them.

taiga- tiger (how could i not go for the pun, and also canon did it first anyway). while once a common sight around town, after nagis death hes become a rare visitor, traveling more often than not, only stopping home once in a while. maybe he doesnt want to linger around the feelings left behind now that shes gone. scary and serious, but not out of bad intentions.

ken- fox (just like an). runs a somewhat popular cafe in town, comfortably settled down. he regrets not being there to protect his daughter, but theres nothing to do about it anymore. maybe one day shell come back, but for now, hes got a job to do and thats the most important thing for him to focus on.

nagi and taiga are fully aware that theyre siblings, unlike akito and ena. it was more common for their generation to be aware of this, rather than having knowledge about their origins withheld. they both were in an arena that focused on team fights, and when taigas original teammate was killed, nagi ended up with him, prompting him to help them both escape because he didnt want to let his sister get hurt more than necessary (even though shes capable of taking care of herself in a fight). they met ken (another arena escapee) during their way out of the city, and began traveling as a group of three until they found the town they all called home. their presence was an important part of making that town thrive into the place it is now, even if things for the trio have since fallen apart quite a bit. nagi is gone, taiga rarely sticks around, ken is the only one who stayed now.

meiko- bear. runs a convenience store at night in the undercity near one of the arenas (the one akikoha are in), well known around the area and uses her advantageous shop location to help new escapees get a little more set into their newly freed lives. a kind if intimidating woman, and very reliable at her jobs.

miku- striped hyena. just an average young escapee living in the undercity, although she doesnt try to blend in very well. ever since she got her hands on some hair dye shes been stubbornly sticking to the faded and grown out color, she thinks shes cool with it. friends with a couple humans who seem completely unbothered by her animal traits

luka- ibex. an escapee from the outer city workshops who decided to move to the undercity... and never really settles down anywhere. she likes to wander from place to place, experiencing the great expanse of the city from its depths. shes got her favorite places to come back to, but more than anything, shes always on the move to see something new.

kaito and the kagamines are humans (the kagamines are mikus human friends!) which is why theyre not here 👍

Well Transformers Prime, Transformers 1986 and IDW comics are having the first place that’s for sure

And then the second place is kind of shared by Fall of Cybertron, Exodus, Prime wars trilogy, Robots in disguise(2001) and Transformers One.

The third place goes to G1, Animated, Earthspark, Armada, War for Cybertron Netflix series, Aligned Robots in disguise, Bumblebee, Rise of the Beasts and Cyberverse because I only liked some little parts of them.

And then I also saw some of the Bay movies, Victory and Headmasters and didn’t like them at all.

Separate first place for J-Decker. It is not exactly Transformers but it is a show about giant robots and I loved it

fandom talks too little about hylla and reyna. reyna killed her father when she thought he'd killed hylla. hylla dragged them out of puerto rico and found them sanctuary and employment on circe's island AND became one of circe's favorites. then when they got captured by blackbeard hylla also got them out of that situation by out-pirating literal immortal pirates. then in a span of three years, they split up, found their own ways to the amazons and cj, and became the leaders of their respective factions. when hylla's queenship was being threatened by otrera in son, she plotted a counter-coup and defeated an amazon queen who couldn't die two nights in a row in one-on-one combat, THEN led her cavalry to camp jupiter. (ik this woman slept like a corpse for a week afterwards). hylla used reyna as an absolutely ruthless bait-and-switch to capture orion, and all reyna said in response to that was, "bet." reyna carries insurmountable amounts of both guilt and gratitude towards her sister. even though they havent seen each other in a while, hylla still drops everything and does everything in her power to save her baby sister when she knows reyna needs her.

Every day I wake up and remember that the Disc is populated by a set of fascinating, nuanced and ultimately human* characters. And I smile.

(*NOTE: please insert as appropriate: vampiric, dwarvish, Nobby Nobbs, definitely not a monkey AAAH, etc. etc.)

Each character just feels real!! Like an actual person you could meet!! Even when they’re a background character you’ll never see again. Even if they only show up once.

The disc is so full of life, and that’s so so wonderful.

I was having a conversation with a friend (my poor friends are consistent victims of my discworld propaganda drive) about how much I liked Angua and they were like oh!! Is she your favourite character!? And I had to very awkwardly be like, oh no, actually there are like six other characters that I’m somehow *more* insane about.

And it just got me thinking about how well done every single character is. Even the characters that show up in only one book are just awesome! The villains are brilliant!! And as the series progresses you see such a genuine effort to portray people well.

There are So So many Discworld characters that I love, and that’s such a testament to how talented Terry Pratchett was as a writer.

Just,, man, I love all those little guys so much. I’m so glad this exists.

Epic the Musical fans, I'm gripping you by the shoulders to tell you that Penelope has a sister who she is very very close with in the Odyssey who was named Iphitimene.

Not only a sister, but in each myth she is in, she has a lot of brothers. At least around 4 or 5.

The Potential for Eldest daughter Pen, Middle child Pen, and/or baby sister Pen is ENDLESS!!!

She is also half-naiad at the very least (in most myths) with her mother being a river nymph named Periboea. She can even be 3/4th naiad if you go with the myth of her father, Icarius, being the son of Bateia, another naiad.
