I finished Harry Potter a decade after it came out. It feels like an achievement I’m meant to do like killing the enderdragon (I’ve never killed the enderdragon in survival)

For some reason I wasn’t satisfied with the ending yknow. It’s short and cute. All of them got a happy ending and now taking their kids to hogwarts for the first time but idk. Going from killing Voldemort, breaking the most powerful wand to just “oh we’re happy and stuff”.

And yes that includes if someone has positive associations or mixed feelings or anything short of total hatred of harry potter. But sure. That youtuber with a video titled "i played the old and terrible goblet of fire game from start to finish" where they go haha look at how glitchy this is for 45 minutes is the most pressing issue in the world to us.

It also yknow, totally sounds amazing and helpful to how your cause looks to an outsider when you unironically say shit like "if you like that extremely popular book than you must be a terrible bigot who deserves to die." Youre not scaring anybody away and you are presenting us in the most favourable light to somebody on the fence who could still be swayed. Get it together.

(Other than the really weird bit about "Male presenting Doctor") what were your thoughts about the specials?

pretty mixed bag, pretty messy, but good overall. i think they were very obviously a nostalgia trip for people around my age lol and it worked! i loved seeing tennant and tate back onscreen together, their chemistry hasn't aged a bit, and honestly just watching doctor who that wasn't written by chris chibnall was a breath of fresh air. they weren't boring, like seasons 11 and 12 were, and they didn't go too far off the other end into nonsense like flux did. characters want things again! the show can let itself just be silly! i was literally cheering out loud when donna and the doctor were just saying random scifi gobbledegook at each other for like a solid several minutes during the star beast.

the structure of the specials kind of baffles me. i love wild blue yonder--i think it's definitively the best of the specials as a standalone, it's absolutely fantastic, creepy and atmospheric and bringing things around to RTD's strength, which is well-written characters interacting with each other and letting good actors just act. but at the same time i dont understand why it exists? it feels like...idk. imagine if you watched the star wars original trilogy but instead of the empire strikes back the middle film was just a feature length film about luke and han surviving on an ice planet with no reference to anything that happens in the last film except the two characters' relationship. and then the next film was still return of the jedi, unchanged. it felt like that

i liked all the weird campy silliness of the star beast and the giggle, and they were both very fun! neil patrick harris gave a fantastic performance, there are a lot of very memorable sequences from the giggle, but it's very very all over the place. so many threads get kind of picked up and go nowhere. the toymaker's haunted house dimension goes nowhere. RTD's eyerolling social media commetnary goes nowhere (thank god tbh but yknow im illustrating something here). even the toymaker kind of goes nowhere, after ncuti gatwa shows up he's bascially an afterthought who loses by dropping a ball. obvious parallels to david tennant's first episode with that ball scene could be made, but just... aren't. it feels like load-bearing sectikons of the plot and themes were cut out to make room for a backdoor pilot for the stupid fucking UNIT spinoff

oh and it goes without saying i fucking hate all the UNIT wank in the star beast and the giggle. i hope space nine eleven 2 happens to their stupid fucking avengers tower i cannot stand kate stewart who is constantly a murderous bonehead (in the giggle alone she gets two pepole killed by not listening to the doctor and assuming that this teleporting godlike entity could be restrainted by Two Guys) who is both in and out of universe just a boring nepo baby with no merit of her own

um. i still dont know what happened with the regeneration. i think the implication is that when david tennant dies hell time travel back to become ncuti gatwa inside himself--at least the rehab dialogue seems to make that implication. but it's not really explained or explored? baffling. i do think that fourteen getting to settle down and live a peaceful life with his friends is cute.

oh yeah and the ask said other than that but goddd there was some good stuff in the star beast and honestly with the state of the UK media i will take any perspective on trans people that includes baseline human erespect but some of those lines made me cringe so bad. anyway overall i am cautiously optimistic for the future of the show--oh ncuti was fucking great did i mention that i instantly bnought him as the doctor he owned the scene, the moment he was there it was clear he was the protagonist, and i liked the church on ruby road well enough too--i am cautiously optimistic but i worry that a big UNIT-shaped tumor will devour huge chunks of it and it'll be annoying. also russel t davies is like 60 and i just dont want to hear what he has to say about twitter so im not looking forward to dot and bubble

John is stuck inside Arthur's body and clearly feeling trapped in there. Arthur keeps dismissing John as yammering and nagging, John keeps mocking Arthur's happiness and relaxation. Finally we get to the root of whatever this argument is: John wants to see a film, he can't take himself to, and Arthur won't take him. Which. That sucks. You're the asshole, Arthur. John can't take himself, and he was just tortured for a thousand years and then helped you kill Uncle even though he really didn't want to. Jesus christ arthur pisses me off this season and I hate the quirky music trying to convince me his shit is cute :/

John is also gross here, mocking Arthur for eating, which is uncomfortably vicious. Arthur is really skinny, this comes up a lot, and he has a lot of trauma around food. In addition to the constant little jabs and corrections...

I think it's uncomfortable and bummery for John, a trying-to-do-good fragment of King In Yellow, be reduced to a petulant nag at this point in the story. Why now? Why does John now need to be taken down a peg, after being tortured for a thousand years by KIY and Kayne and then being made complicit in murder with Arthur? This sucks!

It's so sad, this line where he's like, "After all we've been through, you treat me like a passenger! I feel degraded and hurt!" And the music is like, silly and quirky, and Arthur is harried and ignoring John and talking to all the other people he's encountering in the world. HUMOR! Literally, who in the audience wanted this??? (no one did, this scene exists to shake off the dirty jarthur shippers who really liked when these two guys talked about love and finding each other in hell a couple episodes ago. This is a PLATONIC story, and platonic love means treating your friends like they're annoying nags for begging you to take them to a movie, something they can't do without you) (to spell it out I think canon!jarthur is not queerplatonic. It's not romantic. It's not anything; it's just here, every week, because that way there's a show. Arthur treats John like he's an annoying burden, and John is literally trapped inside of Arthur.)

I thought the weird John stuff was going to lead to a commentary or themes about misogyny. Like I thought they were intentionally (dysfunctional) husband and wife coded here and structural misogyny as a product of inertia, very real survival and safety concerns, and individual human fallibility was going to be explored. Now I doubt it

I've been having a hard time caring about any progressive conversations surrounding media since I started getting help from the human trafficking/sex exploitation center.

Therapists, students, americorp workers, case managers, poc, trans, gay, etc all have bland liberal opinions on these things. They like Harry Potter (but not jk rowling). They love book series I've seen torn apart and boycotted. Rock out to Taylor swift. I've never bothered to say anything. Bc yknow what. They do far more and try so hard to be supportive and their in a way that really makes a difference in a way I don't know that caring about media does. People online act like they are better for developing these opinions about media but most of the time they don't do shit.

I dunno. I feel like im supposed to care to be a good person according to the internet. But irl the biggest help comes from people who don't and want to bond over "problematic" media

hi! I got a bunch of asks, and I figured I should (after 5 years) finally give an update.

unfortunately, though I enjoyed this for a long time, the hobby of writing faux-academic analyses of wands has long been soured for me bc I am, yknow, trans in the uk. I don't want to help sustain positive and neutral attention on jk rowling and contribute to the money she is using to fund and spearhead uk and us movements against trans people. It is truly wild to have reason to have beef with a famous children's author but here we are. Years later, these movements are still using that harry potter money and social cred to try to make questioning trans people's existence seem like a liberal free-speech common sense position that's unfairly targeted by radical, hysterical trans activists.

(Here is a tracker of the rise in current legislation restricting trans peoples' participation in public life in the us; the current uk prime minister made a jab against trans people this week in parliament, unknowingly in front of the mother of a trans teenager recently murdered in a hate-motivated attack, part of his customary appeal to right-wing culture war rhetoric. This is, as that first link points out, not his first public joke lampooning trans people, and as the stonewall link below mentions hate-motivated crimes against trans people have increased over 150% in the last few years, but only in the aftermath of a girl's murder has labour pushed back against our identities being part of a national debate.)

Interacting with people still into harry potter feels like a real toss-up. It feels depressingly likely, given what I see online and the beliefs of some of my coworkers, relatives and acquaintances, that I'm writing for someone who thinks nonbinary people are fine as long as they aren't too scarily masculine-looking, and trans women are fine as long as they're really nice and never say anything challenging and make themselves as small and cis-acceptable as possible and only react to people's cruelty with self-sacrificing grace, and trans men are fine as long as they are cute and don't look like neckbeards and are suitably disdainful of masculinity but also not too trender-y, and this whole thing about harry potter is kind of overblown but you can't say that because trans people looove to cancel people. I don't want to write stuff for people who hold these beliefs if I can avoid it! Writing non-harry potter related stuff is the best way to avoid it right now.

If some of these statements feel challenging to you - I was there once too, as a confused angry teenager who felt like gay people were trying to make me feel bad about myself. The social media landscape genuinely makes change more painful than it has to be. Personally, working to humanise and listen to people I was unthinkingly taught to disregard, ignore, disdain or pity has been one of the most rewarding projects of my life, even though by definition it will probably never be complete, and also it can be difficult and vulnerable. I hope you can find it rewarding too. to be honest i was not really referring to/thinking abt headcanons--i was more talking abt the way that like. actual transfems r treated in hp fandom. like personally i have not necessarily found hcs to be the most reflective of someone's politics, esp. bc in my own short time in this fandom i've seen people be very enthusiastic abt like...a transfem hc but then turn around and get really angry at irl trans women for saying something negative abt hp fandom. not saying that u can't tell anything abt a person's politics from stuff like hcs, just that i'm really less concerned w that than i am like. how u are responding 2 actual live human beings who say things u don't like abt the fandom ur in, yknow?

and unfortunately i would not necessarily assume that a harry potter fan would know better! as laura pointed out in her message it is more natural to assume that someone who is engaging with a fundamentally conservative piece of media created by a transmisogynist holds views that align w that media, unless that person has done something to make it very clear that they don't. like, i can only speak for myself here, but personally i feel wary of people who like...loudly + publicly talk abt how much they like hp, bc if i don't know anything abt u + ur talking abt how much u enjoy the hp books/movies/franchise it is more natural for me to assume that u share at least some of the politics contained within them, or that u either don't care that jkr is a terf or r so blind 2 trans issues that u don't even know, neither of which makes me feel safe around someone lol. within hp fandom i basically only interact w people who have made it clear that they do not politically align w hp by being critical of the series + jkr, which is why i also tend 2 be wary of people who get very defensive when someone criticizes hp fandom--bc i also do not think jkr + the series r something that can just be neatly excised from fandom as though they have nothing 2 do w each other, and so if ur critical of hp + jkr then it follows naturally that u should at least be open 2 criticism of hp fandom as well imo.

i’m not entirely sure what the debate even is tbh like i don’t get why it’s so hard to Not give money to the franchise of a billionaire who is not only actively introducing terf rhetoric to the general public (on basically an hourly basis on twitter bc even though she’s a billionaire she apparently doesn’t have enough money to buy herself a hobby) but also actively endangering trans people around the world like congresspeople are literally quoting her while they vote against bills that would expand rights for lgbt folk. like and as many people who are much smarter than me have pointed out: the series itself is not devoid of her politics. they are pretty evident through her writing and there was many a time when even i, reading the books as a child, was like hmm this sounds off. i honestly don’t believe in this “separating the art from the artist” crap that so many people seem to be espousing as a justification for playing the game like you can’t separate it when she is alive and making shit tons of money from literally every piece of licensed harry potter media or merchandise. it’s really not that hard to just yknow. pretend she (and the whole industry she’s made out of harry potter) doesn’t exist and find better media to become attached to
