Ranking Santana’s solos based on importance to her character, part I
I can never make up my mind when it comes to ranking GCVs based on taste. On most days, I can’t even do a solid top 3 because it changes all the time. And in the case of Santana solos, where it’s banger after banger that task becomes even harder. So like I’ve done before for Pezberry duets, I’ve decided to do a different type of ranking. One where we’re not judging the song itself or the vocal but rather the role it plays in Santana’s journey as a character. Does it represent a huge character moment? Is it more subtle in showcasing one of her traits but symbolizes an aspect of her nonetheless? These are the important questions.
Of course, just as ranking based on how much I like listening to the songs, this one will be subjective as well. It’s according to how I see Santana and what beats in her story I deem more important than others. And it’s also all in good fun and more so a semi-serious overview of all her solos rather than an exhaustive character study through song. The girl is in 99 episodes and sings in 108 songs - can you imagine how long that analysis would be?
Alas, out of 108 we’ll only be considering the 14 solos Santana had in the series. This excludes Santa Baby as it was a cut scene and frankly, is a can of worms on its own. Also not included is Silent Night, the album-only solo that would have made Glee, Actually much more bearable. Before we get started with the 14, I wanted to shout out the two songs that, had they been Santana solos, would surely be high on this list. The first is Constant Craving, which by all accounts should have been a solo and, in-universe, even was one. But because this is IKAG and we can’t have nice things, Santana shares the spotlight in her own coming out story with student-fucker Shelby Corcoran. The other song, one that does an even better job of capturing the tension of Santana’s story is the Troubletones classic Rumour Has It/Someone Like You. This one’s perfect as is and wouldn’t work unless a group number, but I wanted to shout out what a tremendous character piece it is anyway. But you don’t need me to wax poetic about that particular mashup because I already have.
So, without further ado, the bottom 7 of said list. Only half of it because part two is coming to you very soon with even more reaching and more to say on each and every solo.
14. Science Fiction Double Feature
Starting us off is the obvious choice for last place. SFDF might be Santana’s very first solo but it’s also one that barely even exists in-universe, only acknowledged as something that truly happened in a throwaway 3x04 line. The song has so little to do with Santana that the confusion about who was even singing was (Entertainment) news-worthy back in 2010 and that should tell you about how inconsequential Science Fiction Double Feature is on a character-level. Don’t get me wrong, the vocals are on point but this is not about that. And it’s not like it’s unique in that on this list full of Santana solos, as vocal excellence is just the universal truth of every one of her songs. As far as character beats are concerned, though? The Lips will have to contend with 14th place.
13. Back to Black
Tumblr media
I consider this to be a severely underrated Santana solo so it pains me to rank it so low on here but audition songs are what they are. Now, we’re far from the zero importance of the previous entry but there’s no denying that Back to Black as a solo has little to do with Santana’s character. The song choice itself anyway; it’s little more than an opportunity to capitalize on the immense success and popularity of Valerie. And don’t get me wrong, giving Santana another Amy Winehouse song to sing was the right choice and I’m grateful for it. But does Back to Black have much to do with Santana Lopez as a person and her character development? That’d be a no.
With this song I can at least make an argument for the context, which is to say that the song itself might not be important but its existence is. In the context of 2x21 Funeral and the race for a Nationals solo, Back to Black has a rather big importance and it’s something Science Fiction Double Fiction couldn’t deliver. Santana is in-universe acknowledged as a great soloist on par with the previous big three of the Glee Club, Rachel, Kurt, and Mercedes. And if we consider her growth from Sue’s spy to someone who grew to care about the club, or the out of universe importance of Naya’s increasing role in the show, that’s huge. Not only is Santana an actual voice within the club they consider and count on, but she’s among the now big four who are even considered for a task as big as a Nationals solo. True, Santana’s had a Sectionals solo before, much like Rachel before her, but you’ll see in my section on Valerie why that’s somewhat diminished in my eyes. Here, however, through her performance of Back to Black Santana’s acknowledged as the powerhouse she is and officially enters the ranks of the Glee Club’s best. The ones with the voice and, importantly, the ambition to want more.
12. Nutbush City Limits
Tumblr media
Everyone’s but Tina’s favourite diva delivers on this one, no doubt no doubt, but much like Back to Black, Nutbush CIty Limits is little more than a song chosen because Naya Rivera had proven she sounded amazing covering the artists’ tracks. Like Back to Black, most of what we can take form this solo in terms of Santana’s character comes from context rather than content.
Nutbush being a Glee Club performance rather than an audition wouldn’t automatically put it one place higher but the emotional stakes of 4x13 Diva do. Nutbush gains its narrative relevance not from being Santana’s big return to Lima - after all, girl returned every two weeks for a while there in season 4. Though this particular return carries a similar status symbol to being part of the big four as it is Santana the Glee Club invites back for diva week and Santana who blows their minds. But that aside, the real selling point of Nutbush is the reason behind Santana’s return.
Granted, even with the Bram drama and Santana’s jealous scheming this solo isn’t all that juicy. Yes, it’s essentially her way of making Brittany jealous and an entrance worthy of Santana’s dramatics but Nutbush as a song is divorced from the episode’s storyline. As a song, it has nothing to do with Brittana or Santana’s journey in season 4. If we tried really really hard we could maybe reinterpret the lyrics to fit Santana’s Louisville life, which she says permanent goodbye to here, but even I think that’s be a stretch. So as is, here we have Nutbush City Limits coming in at 12th. Some contextual relevance thanks to the drama of Diva and an opportunity for Santana to further showcase her talents but not much else going for it.
11. Valerie
Tumblr media
I debate each and every ranking with myself and the placement of Valerie is no different. See, if only it wasn’t so iconic and so obvious when we talk about Santana’s solos I’d have half a mind to place it lower. The same thing I said about the previous two entries can be said here and in fact, even what I said about Science Fiction Double Feature not being acknowledged in-universe save for a throwaway line in 3x04 kinda applies. Granted, Valerie absolutely is performed diegetically and also referenced in 5x12 100 when Brittana reprise the song. But still, I can’t help but feel like Valerie isn’t as appreciated within the world of the show as it should be and that fact keeps it out of the top 10.
Look, Valerie is obviously a big deal for Santana. I’d be willing to bet that if you asked fans, causal and hardcore Gleeks alike, what Santana solo comes to mind Valerie would be it. In the top 3, at the very least. And with good reason, as not only is Valerie the first proper Santana solo (sorry, SFDF) but also among if not the most iconic one. Everyone knows and with good odds loves Valerie. And it is significant that Santana becomes the second ND member to sing a competition solo with it, preceded only by Rachel and followed only by Tina. That’s a short and significant list to be on. And, since Sancedes were snubbed during 2x04 Duets, it’s the first time Santana’s singing talents are truly appreciated in the club. If her auditioning for a solo with Back to Black was a big deal then actually getting one certainly is.
But… we never talk about it. Not in the show we don’t, save for those very small references. A big deal is made out of Fabrevans getting the duet and even Bike’s dance showcase, but Valerie comes and Santana knocks it out of the park without so much as a “wow, Santana!” Or, “thanks, Santana,” or, “you’re getting the solo, Santana!” And really, Santana’s or rather Naya’s strange utilization throughout season 2 is a separate topic I could go on about, but you get what I mean. The song itself doesn’t even have to have significance because a competition solo is a big enough deal on its own and doesn’t need to have further meaning - Rachel’s DROMP being the outlier. But the thing with Valerie is, it gets so much more recognition beyond the constraints of the show than within it. For that reason, I cannot in good conscience place it any higher.
10. Love You Like a Love Song
Tumblr media
I haven’t yet attempted to read much more into songs that were mostly there for performance value rather than character significance but I think it’s time we change that. And what other song to do that with if not, Love You Like a Love Song, the Santana solo everyone… just kinda forgets about, if I’m honest. In fact, you might be thinking: there’s no way this song is more integral to Santana’s character than freaking Valerie. Hear me out, my friend.
Context is key and for the first time on this list I can argue that the particular song choice is, too. Okay, maybe not as much as later entries will be but Love You Like a Love Song fills the purpose of, well, a love song. Crucially, and I’m kinda building my entire argument on this, it features one of Glee’s handful of pronoun changes. In Santana’s version, we can hear “constantly, girl you play on mind like a symphony” and that single change is elevated to a new level in the context of the performance itself. That being, Santana singing this solo at prom, that she went to with her out and proud girlfriend and where they’re up for prom king and queen.
I did tell you I would read into it but we have nine more songs to go, of course there will be a little reading into things. I’m aware that the significance of Love You Like a Love Song beyond being a generic prom performance exists solely in my head but, hey, maybe it exists in yours now too. Because isn’t that beautiful to think about, in terms of Santana’s journey? That she went to junior prom with her beard, miserable and deathly afraid, that she couldn’t dance with the girl she loved. And now here she is, a senior who might have been forcibly outed but survived and kept her head high, and now she’s proud and full of love. She wholeheartedly enjoys her senior prom with Brittany by her side and doesn’t even really care about prom queen anymore because she has love. A love she can sing about, with her girlfriend doing backup and with her changing the pronouns during a school performance because that’s who she is and who she loves. Girl, now that plays on my mind constantly.
9. Trouty Mouth
Tumblr media
Yes, the joke song comes in at ninth. You think it should be lower? I think it should be higher but I didn’t dare. Even ninth place feels pretty audacious for an original song that was purely meant to be a joke, a joke about a cast member’s physical appearance at that. But Glee’s shittiness aside, I’m here to defend Trouty Mouth as a Santana solo. Put some respect on its name? Maybe not, but grabbing the shovel and giving a little depth to it at least.
So Trouty Mouth, in Santana’s own words, is an awesome heterosexual song she writes for Sam. How genuine she thought it was is another matter but we all know that at this point in the story, 2x16 Original Song, she’s fresh off from a semi-rejection from Brittany after she poured her heart out. So Santana, defensive as always and lashing out, doubles down on her own heterosexuality by writing her assigned original song to/about her boyfriend. And yes, sure, it is a joke. The joke here is that Santana is making fun of Sam’s mouth like she makes fun of so many people’s attributes, physical or not.
But here’s the thing, if we were to consider Trouty Mouth in earnest and examine why is it, exactly, that this was the best Santana could come up with, I think we reach an interesting answer. That being, that beyond insults being Santana’s MO she also has a history of making fun of guys’ physical appearance, particularly after being involved with them. Less so with Puck but her way of asking Finn out is already by insulting him and then she spends the rest of their interactions in the series really hammering the point home. And like with Sam, it’s the writers being asses about a cast member’s actual body and appearance, but putting that aside it’s Santana other MO of doubling down and going way too far. She makes a point of not only exaggerating Finn’s features but of highlighting just how unattractive she finds him. And though what happens with Sam is slightly different, it’s Santana hyperfixating on a physical aspect of a guy she’s involved with and making fun of it.
The way I see it, there are two main ways of looking at it and both circle back to the idea of comphet. One, Santana’s being genuine in her hyperfixation, at least with Sam because she’s desperately trying to make herself be interested in any part of this man. Even in this genuine attempt, if it turns into comedy then so be it, Santana does love insults. And if she’s being deliberately mean about it from the get go, like she is with Finn, then we can see it as an attempt to put these boys down in order to justify her own lack of attraction. See, no one could possibly be attracted to Finn, it’s not her fault. See, Sam’s mouth is ridiculous and therefore her own lack of feelings towards him despite dating is justified. So raw and confused immediately after the event of Sexy, Santana is reaching and coping in her own harmful ways. And if she makes fun of Sam in the process of trying to make herself feel better, so be it.
I told you we were gonna reach and I fully acknowledge this is way, wayyy more thought than the writers ever put into Trouty Mouth or indeed any of Santana’s body-shaming comments. And I’m not trying to exonerate her with this interpretation because she clearly made Sam uncomfortable and her relentless shaming of Finn was never okay. But doesn’t this make for a more compelling narrative, where it’s not just a joke? It’s Santana’s inability not to turn her attraction to men, or lack thereof, into a joke, because maybe then she’d have to contend with the fact that she is in fact gay. But no, she must still be straight because it’s these boys that are the problem, see. And so we have Trouty Mouth placed so high, relatively. But since I know this is a wild wild reach, I’ll contend with relatively high.
8. Don’t Rain on My Parade
Tumblr media
Remember a few entries back when I said Rachel’s DROMP was the exception to the competition solo significance rule? Well, that comes back to bite us, bite me at least, as I struggle to place Santana’s version. This was originally not at the halfway point but placed fourth on my list that I jotted down back in April. Why for, I could not tell you now.
Well, I mean. There’s an argument there that DROMP is significant to Santana’s character, even if not as significant as it is to Rachel’s. But maybe that comparison and Santana’s complicated relationship with Rachel are the key to understanding Santana’s version. Season 5′s Don’t Rain on My Parade is an imitation of season 1′s version, where Santana basically retraces Rachel’s steps and, I’d argue, recaptures the Sectionals solo’s magic but does so by reinventing it. This more pop-sounding arrangement makes it clear that this is Santana’s version now and she’s going to leave her on mark on Rachel’s signature song.
Based on this, DROMP signifies several things for Santana. One, it’s an extension of Back to Black in that it firmly grounds Santana as one of the big players, now not just at McKinley but out in the real world, on Broadway. She makes an entrance and she does it well, matching Rachel’s talent to the point of scoring the understudy position. Two, because it establishes a potential career path for Santana, in a somewhat contradictory manner it also highlights how lost she truly is in the New York era and how desperate for a firmer sense of identity. Auditioning comes off as a rash decision and one she makes knowing full well it can jeopardize her relationship with Rachel. But Santana feels so stuck, so unwilling to be known as the Yeast Girl for the rest of her life that she barges in and barges in with DROMP, of all songs. Which leads us to three, Don’t Rain on My Parade (Santana’s Version) representing her intense and precarious friendship with Rachel.
Rather, the song choice represents it. The conscious decision Santana had to make to not just audition to be her roommate’s understudy, but to do so with a song that Rachel has such heavy baggage with. And look, I’ve seen several different interpretations of Santana’s performance. Some say it was meant to be insulting, intimidating towards Rachel. A call for war, even, since we’re talking about these two dramatic bitches. Some say imitation is the highest form of flattery, and it’s not like Santana’s attempts at bonding haven’t been misguided before. Some say she didn’t give the choice and indeed the audition itself much thought at all. I disagree with the last one and won’t decide between the other two today. The point is, it’s a layered choice and a layered situation between Pezberry. Throwing in the big question of what Santana should do career-wise, an arc throughout the New York era, we have a song that contributes… something to our understanding of Santana Lopez as a character. What, exactly, I’ll leave it to you to decide, but there is something there that’s worthy of closing our list of the bottom seven.
End of, for now
Aaaand that’s the list, for now. I promise this won’t be another situation where there are months and months in-between parts, I’m planning on doing part two this weekend. I just felt this post could use a break between the first and last seven entries as it’d be a looong long post all in one. If you agree/disagree with the bottom 7, feel free let me know, and I’m taking bets on the order of the top 7.

This is a re-post/archiving of a twitter thread from Oct 16, 2021, edited slightly for clarity.
Know what I haven't done for a while? Waxed philosophical about Miami Vice.
I'm currently stuck in traffic bad enough that people have turned off their cars and are chilling outside, so here goes.
So we have a houseguest who actually ASKED to be subjected to Vice, and Dan immediately suggested we watch Bushido, because let's face it, he's a Castillo Guy, and the "Vice Squad's Lieutenant is a Weird Weeb" episodes are some of his favorites.
I expressed some hesitation— Bushido is an episode that is very slowly paced (purposefully) and works best when you know the characters and know what the stakes are. We watched it anyway, and it didn't really land the way it should've (although the guest appreciated the Battlestar Galactica connections).
(Traffic cleared. In line for donuts now.) I tried to explain the fact that while Vice is technically an episodic show, it's a precursor to arc based shows in the ways it handles all the characters and their *emotional* arcs— case in point, in Bushido Sonny and Rico both seem *happy.* Castillo earnestly smiles for the first time in the show, and we learn the depths to which duty and honor matter to him (and yet, how much actual RULES really do not— his own code of honor supersedes the law even if he finds ways to pay lip service to it.)
This got me thinking about how Season Two of Miami Vice telegraphs an enormous amount about the characters' eventual arcs and the decisions they'll make throughout the series; practically half of S2 is episodes about Sonny Parallels crashing and burning and how that predicts his own eventual crash. Of course, those are the OBVIOUS things the show tells us about its cast. The thing I find fascinating about S2 is that a LOT of information is broadcast through music and images rather than the script, and Vice expects you to be smart enough to pick up on this and how it will come to fruition later in the series. So much of who Sonny and Rico are isn't spoken, and a lot of the things they say and do later in the series make a lot more sense if you pay attention to music and visual cues early on.
(Gonna drive again, will finish this thought in a bit…)
This, on top of a friend on the Vice Discord asking for a listing of all the music in Vice got me thinking (aloud) about the music in S1&2, and Dan mentioned there were 14 licensed songs in Prodigal Son alone. That reminded me that a few weeks back I'd had a revelation: I had realized something about You Belong to the City, a song specifically written specifically for Vice (I.E., it's a significant piece of music thematically and lyrically), and which plays in Prodigal Son over a sequence of Sonny being distraught in NYC at night.
I wrote about Prodigal Son last year (2020) and didn't mention that sequence at all except to talk about the weird aggressive roller skater who chases Sonny on a darkened road. At the time, I frankly thought it was a song that was chosen for its sound more than its lyrics, because the lyrics don't really fit with what we're seeing on screen.
The song starts playing about halfway through the first Prodigal Son episode, right after Tubbs reunites with Valerie and leaves Sonny alone in a city he doesn't know and doesn't have any connection to. I've mentioned before that I think, as the opener for S2, Prodigal Son is very much about home and belonging. And the thing is: Sonny doesn't belong in New York. The end of the episode confirms that, at least at that point in the series, it isn't really home for Tubbs either.
Sonny's a Southern Boy, most at home on a boat. You could argue there's some kind of ominous irony in the first 1/2 of the chorus:
Cause you belong to the city You belong to the night Living in a river of darkness Beneath the neon light
But it's not objectively TRUE.
When you start picking apart the rest of the lyrics:
You can feel it Starting all over again The moon comes up And the music calls You're getting tired of Staring at the same four walls
It really starts to fall apart. Sonny isn't *tired* of anything, he didn't choose to go out wandering or to be in the city at all, Tubbs just left him alone to be with his ex-girlfriend. This isn't wanderlust, like the song implies, it's aimlessness. The second half of the chorus and the second verse make it clear that this isn't an accident.
You were born in the city Concrete under your feet It's in your moves It's in your blood You're a man of the street
This... isn't a song about Sonny Crockett.
You Belong to the City *is about Rico.*
The second verse says:
When you said goodbye You were on the run Trying to get away From the things you've done Now you're back again And you're feeling strange So much has happened But nothing has changed
These are exactly the circumstances Rico is in in this episode—he's the titular Prodigal Son, returned home after a long time to discover things are in some ways exactly as they were, and yet he doesn't fit anymore. It doesn't describe Sonny— Sonny isn't "back," he didn't leave NY "on the run." Rico did!
So, why, then, is a song about Rico playing when Sonny is wandering the city alone?
Because the idea that Rico *belongs here in NYC* is Sonny's driving fear at this point in the episode. From his perspective, he's been abandoned. He's unmoored. (And I think this is what leaves his guard so far down with Maggie. He is painfully lonely at the best of times throughout the series; alone in NY he's bereft. First port in a storm and all that.) That the episode ends with Take Me Home is a repudiation of that fear—especially considering the more-or-less-overt flirting that occurs when they meet again.
Tumblr media
Why is any of this important? Because Vice is a series that often takes Show Don't Tell as far as you can go without becoming French New Wave: Now on TV! I argued last year that Prodigal Son intended for a savvy audience to read Sonny as bisexual; the seemingly incongruous lyrical use of You Belong to the City both confirms that and adds the extra wrinkle that *Tubbs needs to be considered in that equation.*
Which is to say: the first episode of Season Two decides to make a statement about where the season is going, and that statement is that *the relationship between Sonny and Rico is import\ant and vital and that they both have a concept of home that involves each other.* Considering where the rest of the series goes, that makes the eventual unraveling of their relationship as Sonny falls apart just about the closest thing the  series has to a full overarching plot.

I heard you wanted glee drama so I am providing you with a list of my opinions that I think could be controversial:
S4 Newbies were better than the S1 cast
S2's competition costumes were ugly (for all three competitions)
Santana's DROMP was better than Rachel's
The S6 sectionals outfits were gross
Rachel's best solo was It's All Coming Back To Me Now
The New Directions should have lost to the Warblers at S2 regionals
The Warblers should have lost the the New Directions at S2 sectionals
The team (throat??somthing???) that won S5 nationals was god awful and the ND's should have easily won
I love Unique but Starships was NOT IT
Lord Tubbington should have ended up with Mr. Puss not Lady Tubbington
oooo mimi my dear, drama i love it.
i get why, and i adore the s4 newbies (expect kitty), but the og 5 have my whole heart
yes yes i couldn't agree more
yes and no, i like santana's version because it's a fun twist on it, but i do appreciate the power rachel's version have.
the blue ones?? bestie, those are literally the best one ever.
objectively perhaps, i prefer glitter in the air
the fact 'hey soul sister' was tied with 'valerie', tasteless, you couldn't be more right
yes i have nothing to add
unique never had a bad song, starships gcv is a bop i don't accept her slander
the true otp, glee is homophobic for not allowing them to be canon
send me your most controversial unhinged opinions or headcanons

danny phantom season 2, eps 1-5 thoughts! opening the new season with episodes like these kinda blew me away. we had multiple serious episodes INCLUDING a two parter!! also, valerie :)
see prev episode thoughts in this tag <3
-I don't know what I expected s2 to open with. but danny portal incident in more detail was not it. (also, I hate to break it to you, sam, but danny's parent's bigass ghost hunting rv def chugs more gas than those vehicles, lmao. unless it runs on ectoplasm or something...)
-WHY WAS DESIREE IN THE SEWER? HAVING TEA WITH IT DOWN THERE?? Her making the giant cow come alive is a boss move, we've almost had all of my fav animals as ghosts now <3 I also don't like how sam was expecting danny to just, haunt the place so the cars wouldn't get sold? I KNOWWW I know she's 14 (and I had a very annoying phase like this, I think I mentioned in a previous post, I GET IT) but they're HIS powers, and messing with (1) dealership will not really put a dent in sales overall because they can just move the cars to another sales lot, and it certainly wont change the industry anyway, it's more of a minor annoyance for (1) location. Also, usually people who work at car sales places work on commission, so if they dont make a sale, they don't have money to pay bills, or eat. sam baby if u wanna be an activist you need to like, actually look into these things. with as much money as her parents have, she could be doing a lot..more useful things for causes she cares about? it's frustrating to see someone with resources who doesn't know how to use them. but shes 14 so again. cannot be really upset :/
Tumblr media
-IS THIS A PREDATOR VS TERMINATOR VS FREDDY KRUEGER MOVIE BUT THEYRE ALL WOMEN?? you know, sam is so right to be excited about this. /I/ want to see this movie. that rules
-paulina inviting danny and friends to her quinceañera, aw! even if it is just to get phantom to show up :') and there'll be a meteor shower, and we KNOW danny wants to be an astronaut!! there's not a meteor shower every night!! the tickets are non-refundable, but..she's rich? like. gotta agree with danny, they never get invited!! I KNOW it's the principle of keeping promises, but if she was that upset, she should've said something. directly. I hated how she was like, passive aggressive about it through the episode, like you SAID IT WAS FINE, THAT YOU'D GO TO THE PARTY TOO. MOVIES SHOW FOR A FEW WEEKS IN THEATERS. IF YOU HAD A REAL PROBLEM YOU NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT. WE'VE HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE, SAM. YOUR FRIENDS. ARE NOT. MIND READERS.
-MR. LANCER GOING AFTER THE GHOST WITH THE FIRE EXTINGISHER LMAO
Tumblr media
-this outfit is everything . anytime the show does an over the top cutesty pink outfit i WANT IT. it looks like shit I wear JKASDHF I HAVE a bow like that and a pink sweater. I need leg warmers </3
-SAMS GOTTA RE-HALF-KILL HIM??? thats fucked up. but also, he finally got his logo!! it took until s2!!! this episode was lowkey very fucked and I felt like it glossed over a lot. does sam have guilt about like. kinda KILLING HIM?? I know, he also agreed and walked into the portal. but. she made the choice to redo it SO quickly (even if it was because someone had to beat desiree) and danny, during their fight, brought up a lot of stuff sam's done in the past, meaning he was holding onto those memories and resentment was building. (I KEEP SAYING HE LOWKEY NEEDS THERAPY, BUT I THINK MOST EVERYONE IN THIS SHOW KINDA DOES) which...is a red flag? and then they didnt even GO to the party URGH I know she tried to make up for it, but it really felt like Sam fucked up and barely faced any consequences and got everything she wanted in the end. I KNOW it's a kids show obv they aren't going to go too in depth, and she undid the damage, kinda, but...I DUNNO how to articulate it but it rubbed me the wrong way.
-but on a note about desiree, her powers of wishes were STRONG ENOUGH TO ERASE NOT JUST THEIR MEMORIES, BUT DANNY'S POWERS?! fuck, if I was danny I'd be like, trying to make friends with her. I know they always have horrible side effects as most genie-granted wishes do, but...c'mon, I'd at least TRY to be like 'I wish no ghosts would hurt anyone in my town' or 'I wish vlad would lose his ghost powers forever no matter What and also forget about my mom' LIKE. SHIT DESIREE IS SO POWERFUL. rewriting reality powerful, basically!! appreciate her. respect her.
-aww, sam helping tucker pass the nurse's office so he wouldn't see because he's afraid of medical stuff? very sweet. I also don't like medical stuff, I've gotten a lot better at handling it tho. but seeing blood and needles still makes me feel lightheaded x_x
-FOLEY, BY TUCKER FOLEY. I want to make my own perfume, that's so cool. even if his first attempt isn't good, he's pretty consistently shown to have an inventor/entrepreneur streak in the show, so like. I can see him inventing or making something (or several somethings) that make him $$$ when he grows up :) proud of my creative son
-I know the 'creepy abandoned hospital on the edge of town' is a joke and the creepy hospital trope is so Worn Out, but in my town we actually DO have a hospital like that! my dad was born in it, but its not in use and hasn't been for, like, 20 years! it needs to be torn down but I think the city doesn't wanna pay the money. the inside is horrible, spray painted and broken glass and shit everywhere. but there's still like, rusty equipment and fucking DOLLS all over the place. the cops drive by it pretty frequently to make sure no one is like, breaking in. (because of water damage, some of the areas really aren't safe. also, asbestos, but people still go in anyway) but also, some of my town was used in a filming for a stephen king show. So it's lowkey spooky all over. just a fun personal tidbit :) to lead into saying, any hospital abandoned for any period of time is NOT safe to quarantine these kids in JKSAHDKF like I KNOW it's a ghost trying to do this, but NONE of these parents are even like, 'well, why dont we keep them in the regular, working hospital'....YIKES. this hospital looks pretty accurate to the one in town. grungy and spooky.
-fentons are tax evaders confirmed by jack's fear of being audited, lol no one is surprised
-ghost sickness via ghost bugs. horrifying concept. I actually expected it to be a new villain, not dr. spectra again! this is a very elaborate scheme. her new form rules, love the new costume. the way none of the bg kids seem to recognize her as their old school councilor. did we just forget about that completely?
-dash watching romance movies in the fucked up ghost hospital. same.
-'oh please, you're ghosts, do you have any idea what YOU smell like?' no, tucker, what DO ghosts smell like? I genuinely didn't know they would even have a smell, I actually want to know now.
-it feels like a while since we've seen jazz!! i was happy to see her again, even if she was a head in a jar for most the episode. I want another jazz-focused ep!!
-we finally see danny doing space-related stuff!! him and his friends stargazing to open ep 3 of s2. cute :) until, GHOST PIRATES!!!!! ...ghost pirate captain is a small child?? VOICED BY TAYLOR LAUTNER???
-oh, the easy listening is ember's song instrumental slowed. 'vapor drone' THEY VAPORWAVED HER!!! ember in a pirate outfit tho >>>>. and the cruise being called m.bersback JKASDHJK. ember adopting a little pirate brother is also pretty cute. concerning this teen and little kid have such bad opinions of adults, like, who hurt you?? (how did you DIE ALSO?? im always lowkey curious about that. we know desiree died at an old age, but her ghost form is young, probably mid-20s, so I wonder how that sort of thing works...its a more mental thing, isn't it?) but ghost team-ups are always cool to see, even if ember bailed after danny took her guitar. I guess she probably thinks youngblood can handle it (which, he's been owning danny this far in the ep, so...fair)
-tucker got that sponsorship from nasty burger for their radio!!! again, opportunistic money maker king, love to see it!!!
-danny taking control of the kids SO FAST. he makes a pretty great leader. no one is surprised, im pretty sure I said I think he's the most mature of the trio, once again, correct, because he's taken on so much responsibility already. all the teens suiting up in the jumpsuits to go save the adults and taking the ship over with a BLIMP. OKAY LETS GO. this feels like it should be a mid finale or straight up finale.
-...speaking of finales. why is ep 4-5 of s2 combined into a 50 minute episode? I havent even clicked play and im concerned. weird placement, like, this season JUST started and we're getting a two parter? okay...why are the episodes placed like this? why not put this at episode 10 or something, for a mid-season thing?
Tumblr media
-this is also a cute dress. possibly my fav dress so far. can her parents give ME cute dresses, I'LL wear them.
-it turns out the castle fright knight was in is called pariah's keep and there's something worse than fright knight in there! lovely! fuck off vlad wtf are you doing <3 your hubris <3 is going to literally get you killed <3 'ring of rage' and 'crown of fire' are great names tho. ...vlad turning into a super polite guy when he was scared of mr. pariah was hilarious. and fright knight doing the same...I mean, it makes sense, he's a knight, he serves a king? happy to see fright knight again either way :) vlad telling him to call him tho, lmfao. you WISH HE WOULD. (I wish hed call me, too. 😔)
-so...jack being genuinely concerned about vlad...maddie really didn't tell him what happened at the cabin, did she. damn. if I was her id immediately come home and be like 'YOU WONT BELIEVE THIS SHITTTT THIS CREEPY GUY--' like, I feel like that stuff you need to tell your partner!!! I know she didnt want Jack to think she was an irresponsible parent putting danny in danger at that time, but STILLLL. maddie spilling boiling tea on him. get his ass. how is jack this oblivious to his wife's discomfort with vlad!! ughhh
-fenton wipe (tm). trademarked toilet paper.
-DANNY AND VALERIE BEING FRIENDS??? :D that was a cute moment. 'hey val <3' and 'if you like him like him, make a move, or someone else will ;)' at sam...damn!! I love her. valerie go for it girl!!! I hate how sam and tucker treat val also, like I GET IT YOURE PROTECTIVE AND DONT TRUST but if anything him befriending valerie will help when she finds out or he tells her like I feel like she'll be more understanding that they think! ALSO I feel like her reason for not liking ghosts is valid, like you haven't really explained the full story to her anyway! she doesn't seem to have any other friends after being booted from the a-listers so im like :( but seeing them kick butt together again was nice <3
-the ghosts all RUNNING FROM PARIAH DARK IS NOT GOOD, I thought he sent them to attack or something, but no. why doesn't someone just tell desiree 'hey i wish pariah dark would die' lol. once again I think she can solve every problem <3 but seeing all the enemies in one place, being civil and hiding together? love it.
-you just know danny's gonna have to clean up vlad's stupid mess. also, jack being willing to put on the ectoskeleton pants to help maddie, as soon as vlad heard it could kill him, he suggested jack do it instead of helping maddie himself? this is why jack got the girl, my man.
-ghost skeletons. how do you end up as a skeleton ghost in your afterlife instead of a humanoid like most the ones we've seen? lmao
-the ghosts just making new homes in various stores. I'd totally be setting up in an expensive clothing store if I was a ghost.
-valerie's dad is possibly the most useful adult so far, with that ghost shield expansion!!! and valerie saving vlad and danny, even tho shes been thru it already, shes still so good!!! this family rules.
Tumblr media
-danny: *gently caresses valerie* :)
-*then he immediately TELLS HER DAD ON HER. and his first response is 'are you okay?' :'( such a good dad...
-*me every time fright knight breathes* youre doing SO great sweetie :)
-the fenton suit thing is so silly looking. does anyone take this thing seriously
-ALL THE GHOSTS FIGHTING WITH DANNY <3 AAAAA. and the fact that pariah isn't perma-defeated, but just locked away again. yikes. he'll probably get out again, won't he? it wasn't too clear, but if vlad DID make a pact with fright knight, I am rabid. I will beat vlad to death with the fenton bat (tm). YOU DONT DESERVE A COOL KNIGHT.
-valerie being direct with sam and challenging her? kinda love that, even tho I normally don't like 'catfight' type situations. because sam has been very passive aggressive about it which is annoying. valerie knows wtf she wants and wasn't even embarrassed to tell sam, but she did tell her, giving sam time to make her own move! and sam denied it and got embarrassed/mad! and sam did have a chance when danny was about to go off and fight, and she hesitated and didn't tell him. I feel like she's hesitating because they're friends and it might make it weird between the trio (poor tucker would be third-wheeling) but if u snooze u lose, u gotta GO after what u WANT girl. smh this is a No Tsundere Zone. 😤

so i've got some (unpopular?) opinions on glee competitions:
s2 sectionals is my least favorite ND performance (except maybe for the gangnam style situation). i was so glad that rachel wouldn't be on the spotlight for once, but then quinn and sam were SO boring that i was begging for her to come back.
don't come for me, but i didn't love valerie either. i was thrilled to see my girl santana get her solo, but i don't like this song (mike and brittany were perfect though).
the warblers were so superior in s4 sectionals. they deserved the win despite marley's fainting.
speaking of it, i love how the warblers perform relying so much on their voices and harmonies, and using few to no instruments at all. i wish the new directions did that sometimes too.
fly/i believe i can fly is one of my favorite numbers ever, and this may or may not have to do with santana and blaine rapping.
this is debatable, but in my opinion the troubletones were better than the new directions during s3 sectionals. their vocals, dancing and song choice were on point. if they needed the TT to lose for plot purposes, they shouldn't have made their performance so good.
i found vocal adrenaline's setlist in nationals s3... questionable, to say the least. starships was kind of weird (higher than any other?). knowing jesse, the choices didn't feel like something he'd put together, and didn't showcase that epic feel VA had in prior seasons.
i know journey songs became somewhat of a joke in the glee fandom, but s1 regionals medley is just... *chef's kiss*.
that's it, i'm currently rewatching the show and i'm about halfway season 4. let's see the upcoming performances and i might do a part 2 if i have something to say about those.

here’s a completely random question: what’s your fav song and your least fav song from each of the o.g. glee club members
Now, when you say "OG", do you mean "original 5", "original 6" or "original 12"?
Rachel Barbra Berry
Okay, I like when Rachel goes OTT but in an ACTING way, rather than her "I'm just too emotional, I have to let it build inside me" way... So to that end, I like songs like "Hello Twelve"; "Run Joey Run"; "Ding-Dong"; "Paradise by the Dashboard Light"; "Kiki/TLT"...
I'm picking "Hello Twelve, Hello Thirteen, Hello Love" as my favourite. This is a song that LITERALLY ELEVEN YEARS LATER, I am STILL pissed off that they cut. This song ESTABLISHES St Berry so well, and I didn't *GET* it until I saw it.
Least favourite? There's a song that comes to mind but I want to save it in case you send a second ask in this vain (hint hint).. So I think "Roots Before Branches". I told you, I really don't like Rachel over-emotionally singing, and this song really plays into that with the vocals AND I just don't like the song. I think this was, bar none, the WORST final number of a season.
Kurt Elizabeth Hummel
I find Kurt REALLY hard to pick for... I think Kurt is one of the characters that I have the BROADEST opinion of in terms of music. I can't pinpoint exactly what I do and don't like in his numbers, beyond "I hate when they force him to go WAY too high and it throws off the balance of the song". And I like when they let him PLAY with a song, rather than singing it straight.
So, candidates include: "Defying Gravity"; "Rose's Turn"; "4 Minutes"; "Bad Romance"; "Pure Imagination"; "NTBND"; "Being Alive"; "Kiki/TLT"...
Yeah, okay, I did actually know which song I was going to pick from the start. I have no choice.
It's "Not the Boy Next Door".
Now, least favourite? This is TOUGH. "Animal" bugs me because of the sheer AMOUNT of processing on that song. "Candles" has the "making Kurt go too high and throwing off the balance" issue.
Yeah, I think "Animal". I don't like Candles, but I REALLY hate Animal.
Mercedes Jones
Let's speed this up a little... Candidates include "4 Minutes"; "The Boy is Mine"; "Beautiful"; "And I am Telling You"; "River Deep"; "Dog Days Are Over"; "Human Nature"; "I'll Stand By You"...
Oof, this IS tough... I think it's "Beautiful"... Yeah, that's the number that comes to mind the most often when I think of Mercedes.
Least Favourite? "I Look To You"? I dunno, I think episode context is why for that one. She doesn't REALLY have a dud number that I can think of.
Tina Cohen-Chang
Hoo boy. First of all... Girl, you were SHAFTED by the producers. Only Original 6 member to have under 100 songs. Only one solo in S1.
Anyway, I like "True Colors"; "I Follow Rivers"; "Dog Days"; "Hung Up"; "3"; "I Kissed a Girl"...
I am fully aware I just named more than half of her solos and duets...
I think it's "True Colors"... or "I Kissed a Girl"... Let's go for True Colors
As for least favourite... is "My Funny Valentine" too obvious a pick? Because it's "My Funny Valentine". (Yes, I like "Gangnam Style". It's awful, but I like it.)
Arthur Abrams
Candidates: "Dancing With Myself"; "Safety Dance"; "Dream a Little Dream"; "Never Going Back Again"... Huh, I think that's all of the ones that stand out to me.
So, yes. I think it's "Dancing With Myself". That's two in a row where I've picked the OG solo...
Least favourite? No contest. "Boys/Boyfriend"... though "Scream" and "Feliz Navidad" get special mentions because I *HATE* "Artie walks!" dream sequences.
Finn Christopher Hudson
I already know my favourite Finn song. I have said it MULTIPLE times, and I stand by it.
My favourite Finn song is, no contest, "Paradise By the Dashboard Light". In fact, I think it's not only Finn's best song, but the best New Directions competition performance.
Now, least favourite? "Girls Just Want To Have Fun".
Wow, Finn was easy.
Lucy Quinn Fabray
Ah, Quinnie...
Candidates: "Papa Don't Preach"; "It's a Man's World"; "Lucky"; "Time of My Life"; "Pretty/Unpretty"; "I Don't Want to Know" (yes, I just listed ALL FOUR of her S2 leads...)... And then that's it??!? Wow, she got shafted after S2, huh?!
Yeah, I think it's "I Feel Pretty/Unpretty". What a surprise. A Faberry song.
As for least favourite? "Up Up Up", I think.
Santana Diabla Lopez
... This is tough. "Science Fiction, Double Feature"; "Valerie"; "Songbird"; "Back to Black"; "River Deep"; "Smooth Criminal"; "Girl on Fire"; "If I Die Young"; "Here Comes the Sun"; "Brave"; "Hand in My Pocket/I Feel the Earth Move"...
I *THINK* I have to go for "Songbird", actually...
Now, least favourite? Does Santana have a dud number? At least, one that's her fault? Okay, I don't like "Take My Breath Away".
Brittany Susan Pierce
There are precisely TWO Brittany songs I will listen to on their own. Those are "My Cup" and "Hand In my Pocket/I Feel the Earth Move".
So yes, it's HIMP/IFTEM.
As for least favourite... "Something Stupid". NOT because it's a Bram song. I actually don't have an issue with Bram, per se... But I just feel like it's bland and doesn't add anything to the show, and doesn't really stand on its own.
Noah Puckerman
"Lady Is a Tramp"; "Mean"; "Glory Days"; "No Surrender"...
I think it's "Lady is a Tramp".
As for least favourite... "I Wanna Sex You Up"... is an Acafellas number cheating? If not, then... No, it has to be "I Wanna Sex You Up", sorry.
Michael Robert Chang, Jr.
This was mean of me to include... "ABC" is my favourite, I guess? And... yeah, "Scream" has to be my least favourite.
Matt Rutherford
My favourite AND least favourite Matt Rutherford song is [THIS SPACE LEFT INTENTIONALLY BLANK]
Jesse St. James
There's no point doing the original 12 and ignoring my boy.
Favourite: "Bohemian Rhapsody"...
Least favourite: "Like a Virgin", I guess... He doesn't ACTUALLY have a dud number.

Riverdale - S2 E18
- The Carrie Musical Episode, oh no, oh help.  I don’t think that there’s anything necessarily bad or wrong about the way Riverdale does musicals.  I just hate musicals in general, and these newfangled musicals (Carrie, for one) often have hideous songs.  All that said, this episode had much less sung-through and they limit most of the singing to on-stage and justify it with ‘this is rehearsal,’ which I am grateful for.
- I’ve been trucking on through this series at a clip and I ... really could not tell you why Betty is so pissy with Veronica right now, in this episode. She disrupts musical rehearsals and picks fights with V and say critical things about V while her boyfriend follows her around taking shakycam footage of all this.
- And once. again. Betty doesn’t. say. that she’s. sorry.  Veronica ends up interrupting what should be a Betty I’m Sorry and says affirmatively that Betty is right.  So Instead of apologizing, Betty sings a song to Veronica saying the simple truth (that Veronica shines) and then that ends the dispute.
- Betty calling Veronica “privileged selfish, spiteful.’  KETTLE POT. Also Archie tries to make the musical about “we are here for Kevin” but you see, Archie, Betty is a disrespectful, lowkey-homophobic non-friend to Kevin, so she doesn’t care about that all.  She just skips over that part.
- Archie approaching Betty with ‘It’s weird we’re playing boyfriend and girlfriend’ while Jughead is standing right there with a camera, and it really makes me wonder why Kevin lets him do this.  Does he think Jughead will do anything other than follow just Betty around with the thing?
- Betty and Jughead trying to railroad Ethel was shitty and bullying.
- Penelope Blossom coming in to the high school to tell her daughter that she would not be permitted to act out a matricidal fantasy was showstopping. A wonderfully crafted speech, well delivered. And Cheryl, in costume as Carrie, pouring a bucket of blood or paint or whatever it is, to terrorize her mother into emancipating her and moving out of the house, equally wonderful.
- Fangs, the musical theater loving Serpent and eternal beta, being the cutest, being so into the musical, and now that I’m keeping an eye out for it, the constant touching of Kevin, drinking his tea, sitting just so, and reacting so perfectly to the musical key moments I loved this.
- Alice having a nervous breakdown on the stage, with Don’t Leave Me Betty, because FP doesn’t want to jump right into a relationship with her.  She pretends that this is about Betty, but it’s all to do with FP saying No Thanks.  Um. Run Jughead Run, RUN.
- Along with the real estate theme being the real plot of Riverdale, the secondary plot is that children are a disaster upon their parents.
Fred Andrews’ fatherhood is inexplicably a failure.  Fred is actually shown to be a loyal selfless person who has a lot of potential, into middle age, of being a hero and a force for good.  He thinks his son Archie is all of these things, and because of the power of Fred’s goodness, other people who have no reason to think this (like Kevin and Veronica) also believe this of Archie, but Valerie always saw it correctly. Archie can be bought.   Jughead sees this too, when he’s not in the sway of Protagonist Boy powers - Archie is stupid.  And I keep getting disturbed by how violent Archie is.  The desperate love that Fred has for his son breaks my heart (Luke Perry was such a gem of an actor).  Archie sides with Hiram in front of everyone, Archie accepts a bribe car and lies about it to Fred and then tells him to not be so dramatic and to calm down about it, Archie fails to attend the mayoral speech that even Mary, who is *divorcing* Fred knows is important to attend, and it’s all supposed to be fine now because Archie bought a jalopy to fix up with his dad. Fred Andrews is the victim of an abusive relationship with his son, poor thing.
Alice Cooper’s motherhood is a disaster, and each of her children visit horrendous torture upon her.  Polly almost drowns her in the fountain later, Betty brings Chic and then the Black Hood back into her life and also confronts her with the fact that while Betty can obtain the slavish devotion of a Jones Man (a thing Alice holds as a fetish object) Alice herself cannot. Charles is also a disaster person.
Sort of like how I grimly enjoy the fact that anyone who has a fancy wedding in a Shonda Rhimes show will end up in a terrible heartbreak very soon, I kind of like how parenthood is a such a source of danger, menace and pain to people in Riverdale.
