TMR Book vs Movie shock

As a book maze runner fan who only read the books. I will admit I was a bit shocked watching The Scorch Trials today. Like don't get me wrong it's not a bad movie. It's just different. Like it made me question if I even read the books, lol. Like I was so confuzzled when Brenda wasn't immune and how Winston died, and by all the changes made in that movie. And not gonna lie, I'm one of those people who get a bit mad when movies don't match up at least mainly like the books, but ngl I was kinda hooked. It feels like re-experiencing the maze runner.

But trust me if you've only watched the movies..read the books because there are many things the movies did not capture. And even though the main thing, a group of kids trynna escape wicked, happens. And even though some of the main parts of the characters happen. It feels like the two are somehow different. Like they go about it in different ways. And it's so cool because it shows that...sometimes it's like other dimensions. Like what could happen in another universe with the same shit, but done differently. Like the Spiderman movies. How it's all the same characters just different plot same story. It's kinda cool tbh.

Anyone else often think about how Newt & Sonya both remembered each other? They never got to tell each other or say goodbye

Newt in death, is not smiling, but there’s no furrowed brow either, no stress painted on his face. He has nothing to worry about anymore. Sonya has no idea what the future holds for them, but she hopes that Newt has gone to a place as dreamy and safe as the island they are headed to. She doesn’t want his soul to miss out on paradise.

Sonya expected to go to Safe Haven with her brother at her side, but then everything goes wrong. They never get to reunite as siblings and it leaves Sonya heart broken upon the arrival at Safe Haven. When Sonya is given Newt's necklace it brings her unexpected comfort.

Christmas TMR Headcanons!

The Glade celebrate the new year more than Christmas, and would therefore have their new year resolutions as promises to one another. Some would give actual handmade gifts, but most would go off with a simple gesture.

Chuck would give prank gifts to people, usually next to their sleeping bag or cot so they didn't know it was him.

In a modern au, the main few would all have their specific Christmas tree topper, and if they were to all live together, it would get very hectic.

Thomas: A silver wire angel Minho: A glow-up wire reindeer Newt: A golden star Teresa: A white angel model Brenda: A snowflake

Every day of December there'd be a different Christmas tree topper, and nearing Christmas day, they'd all get tense whenever around the tree. What do you choose for your tree topper?

Newt has no shame and will absolutely be eating mince pies as soon as they are in store (I do this too, lol, I saw a box of them in September)

Most of the main few take mistletoe quite well (at this point, Minho has kissed everyone, they are starting to suspect he's doing it on purpose) but Thomas... he's a complete mess.

He instantly malfunctions the second he realises he's under the mistletoe, and then has to sit in his own puddle of bisexual disaster-ness for a minute or two.

Newt is often really thoughtful with his gifts, but ends up panicking on Christmas day and watches in mortification as his friends all open gifts from him, only for them to find it just as sweet as Newt three weeks prior.

As I said in my previous Halloween headcanon post, Teresa and Sonya both love the patterned season themed socks, and that's not just restricted to Halloween.

As I said there, Teresa would have her socks organized for December and late November, while it would be April and Sonya would be wearing garish green Grinch socks.

Brenda has about a wardrobe full of ugly Christmas jumpers, and has a hard time deciding which ones to wear on Christmas day.

Back with the idea of the main few living together, they would all help out with the cooking. Because of their mixed talents, the turkey would be immaculate whilst the pigs in blankets are burnt and the gravy being evaporated.

Favourite Christmas songs, now! They'd have a shared Spotify playlist where all the Christmas songs would go, Brenda would automatically skip whenever Mariah Kerry would start playing, much to both Teresa and Minho's despair.

The greatest expression of love is joining someone else's fandom.

Just think about it for a while. First you have to consume the media the fandom is based off of, and while it's possible for it to just be one book or one movie, it's almost always a series. A lot of times there a book AND movie series.

But that isn't nearly enough. Having read or watched the Maze Runner doesn't mean you get the page 250 jokes. Reading Percy Jackson doesn't mean understanding "you drool in your sleep" and "you're not my type" (this one especially now with the casting for the series).

Also. We notice a ridiculous amount of breadcrumbs to defend any point possible (I've seen a PowerPoint presentation on Tumblr as to why the Gladers should say fuck).

And the amount of weird ship names is just ridiculous (there may be a reasonable justification, but wolfstar and rosekiller are just not intuitive), as well as random fixations on completely unimportant characters.

Here's a list of ones I can think of off the top of my head:

Evan Rosier, Barty Crouch Jr., Regulus Black, Pandora [last name unknown], Blaise (I forget the spelling) Zabini, Crabbe, Goyle, and Pansy Parkinson for Harry Potter. Ben, Nick, George, Stephen, Sonya, Harriet, and Rachel for the Maze Runner. Ethan Nakamura (I think he's more important but I can't remember), Kayla Knowles, Austin Lake, and Lee Fletcher for Percy Jackson.

If you just read the books once, you probably don't notice most of these characters.

Just in general there's so many inside jokes and references and quotes and concepts and fanon and headcanons, and all of it is would be so exhausting to keep up with if you weren't completely invested in this made up world some random person came up with.

It had been two days since Thomas came by, Newt was a bit sad but he tried not to think about it. He was allowed his life, but… It was the third day and Newt was already going on his lunch with no sign of the attractive brunet.

Newt hung up his apron and left the staff room, smiling at Zart as the male organized the coffee beans. “Care to make me your special, mate?”

Zart grinned, motioning towards Clint to finish his task before moving to the register, “You know I always love making that for you Newtie.” He cooed as he typed in the order on the computer.

“Oh shut your mush,” Newt said, grinning before he took his wallet out to pay, only for Zart to shake his head.

“Don’t you dare, I’m repaying you for lunch last Saturday.” He said and before Newt could react, Zart put his phone on the reader and the drink was paid for.

“Bloody hell, Zart. You know you don’t have to do all that.” Zart shook his head and motioned for him to go.

“Nah, I got it. Now go get comfy, you only have an hour before it’s back to prison- I mean work.” Newt chuckled but moved to sit in the corner of the room and opened his book. He was currently reading a mystery novel about a wannabe detective and an actual detective solving a family massacre.

After a few minutes Zart placed a cup down, which Newt said cheers to, but they didn’t start any conversation. So Newt returned to his book. He barely had gotten to the next chapter when he heard someone sit across from him.

Newt glanced up, pleasantly surprised to see Thomas sitting in front of him with a soft smile, “Thomas.”

Thomas’ smile got a bit wider when Newt said his name, “Hey Sunshine, looks like I caught you on a break this time, huh?”

Newt grabbed his bookmark and closed his book so he could give Thomas his full attention, “I guess you have.” He said, a smile peeking through as he looked at Thomas.

“So, what’re you reading?” Thomas inquired, leaning his arms on the table as Newt glanced at the book.

“It’s called Detective Files. It’s about a wannabe detective and an actual Detective trying to solve a murder mystery.” Newt said, smiling a bit at the fact that Thomas wanted to know what he was doing.

“Ooh, that actually sounds pretty interesting. I may check it out myself.” Thomas said, a smile of his own threatening to peak out.

Newt seemed to beam at that, he loved giving people suggestions on books, he loved to read so he always had suggestions. “I think you’ll love it, Tommy. Guaranteed!”

Tommy raised his eyebrows, seeming surprised at the sudden nickname but didn’t say anything about it, “Glad to know it has the Sunshine stamp of approval, wouldn’t want to be led astray now.” He said with a grin, taking another sip of his cappuccino.

Newt laughed a bit, crossing his arms, “Where did Sunshine come from, anyways?” He finally asked the question that had been itching his brain for the entire week.

“Well, you’re blond and your face lights up whenever you smile. You look like a literal ball of sunshine.” Thomas said, tilting his head a bit as he explained, “I think it fits, honestly.”

Newt felt his cheeks warm, but he quickly composed himself as he gave Thomas a genuine smile, “Well, I fancy it. S’pose I have more than one reason to be glad that my name tag broke.”

Thomas chuckled at that, “Do I ever get to know the mysterious Sunshine’s name?”

Newt thought for a second, “Well-” Before he could say anything he heard his alarm start to ring. He let out an annoyed sigh as he shut it off before throwing Thomas an apologetic smile, “Maybe another time, Sunshine’s gotta get back to work.”

Thomas seemed to deflate a bit but he nodded, understanding, “I should be heading back as well, anyways. Good luck, Sunshine.” He said, standing up as he gave Newt a salute and a wink.

“Bye Tommy.” Newt said, smiling as he walked over to the counter, keeping an eye on Thomas as he left the shop.

Thomas just about fell through the door of the tattoo shop with a grin on his face. Teresa was at the desk again, this time talking to the apprentice whose name Thomas still couldn’t remember. But he didn’t care at the moment, walking over and placing Teresa’s drink down, “He called me Tommy.”

Teresa glanced at him with a raised eyebrow while the apprentice just cocked her head to the side in confusion. “And you didn’t murder him?”

“No, surprisingly enough. I actually liked him calling me that, am I going insane?” Teresa let out a laugh of disbelief before turning back to the apprentice.

“He has a crush on one of the baristas over at the Glade.” The apprentice nodded, grinning a bit.

“Didn’t know you swung that way, always assumed you’d be straight.”

“I’m bi, but I can understand you thinking I was straight.” Thomas said before holding his hand out, “Don’t think we’ve been properly introduced, Thomas.”

The apprentice took his hand, “Sonya, nice to properly meet you.” It looked like she was going to say something else but Aris called her over to his station, “Hate to leave this convo early but duty calls, I wish you luck with your barista boy.”

Thomas nodded, sending her a salute before looking at Teresa again. “To answer your original question, you’re either insane or this nameless barista already has you wrapped around his finger without even realizing it.”

“I’m not surprised…” Thomas leaned his head on his hand before smiling a bit, “He likes to read, I caught him on break today.”

“Oh really? Maybe he can teach you how to read.” Teresa said, taking a sip of her coffee after.

“Oh shut it.” Thomas adjusted so he could drink his own coffee, “I asked for his actual name but it seems he’s enjoying this little thing we have right now.”

Before Teresa could respond Sonya was back at the desk, “Oh my god, I almost forgot but Newt said he’s down for getting a tattoo.”

Teresa seemed to perk up, “Your brother? You finally convinced him?”

“Yeah, but he won’t let me do it since I’m still an apprentice so can I get the thingy that has all the artists work in it?”

“Yeah, here give me a second.” Teresa opened one of the drawers and rummaged around a bit before grabbing a folder, “The order is Minho, Gally, Thomas, Aris, and then Harriet.”

Sonya grabbed it and thanked her before walking away. “Why did she have to convince her brother to get a tattoo?”

“He’s always wanted one but never could find the artist that has a style he likes.” Thomas nodded, understanding that much, “She’s been bugging him to look at the people here since you all have a lot of different styles. Especially you and Aris, your styles look nothing like how you look.”

“That makes sense, does he live around here?” Thomas asked, just wanting to know about this Newt guy. He might be tattooing him.

“I’m pretty sure. I think he’s a barista, don’t know where though.” Thomas nodded and that’s where the conversation ended.

once you met thomas and his group, you became even closer because you had a whole friend group and stuff

when you had to infiltrate the last city to get minho back and save as many kids as possible, you were all in

it physically hurt you to think about all the shit they were going through, especially after aris and sonya talked about it

you guys work on the mission with the bus together, and are able to successfully get the kids out of the city

sadly, she didn't know you'd been wounded by a gunshot while you were trying to get vince in the berg

you'd been bleeding out and after getting knocked down by another explosion, it only drove the bullet deeper into your abdomen and you couldn't get back up

she was a solid 20 feet away before she realized you were screaming for her

minho, fry and gally were trying to get to newt with the cure while she was literally holding you in your arms as you died

she was sobbing uncontrollably, of course

gally was the one to come back for her (new rarepair mwahahha)

they tried to get you to hang onto life by carrying you all the way to the berg as the city was crumbling but you died on the way there

they got you into a little private section away from the kids and jorge was in the back with you, trying to fix you up but he didn't know how to break it to brenda

they saved Thomas, and Teresa died, and it's a very quiet travel to the safe haven

jorge keeps telling her that you're in a coma, much like Thomas, but she breaks through his lies after a while after seeing you considering the foul smell of decomposition was starting to reek the hut where you lay

the others, especially Vince tried to get him to come clean but he couldn't break her heart

she was sobbing for days, even after Thomas awoke. it kinda put salt in the wound for her

she carved your name on the rock and often sits at the shore behind it to talk to you

she forgives and understands jorge for lying to her, she just blames herself for what happened. it could've been avoided and she didn't do enough to protect you

her blindness to you and focusing on Thomas for those few minutes literally costed your life

SONYA

you escaped wckd together (and with harriet)

you were essentially the aris to her thomas

you felt so bad for leaving aris but you seriously couldn't take him because you didn't know which room he was in and you had to go asap once your plan was set into stone

it was a long and hard journey through the scorch

sadly, you weren't able to make it to the safe haven like you'd intended

you made it to the Right Arm, however

though once you were reunited with aris and met his new friends, shit went bad

you'd been kidnapped by wckd, again

within the next coming months, you'd experienced all kinds of torture and abuse

some of them liked to get physical and hurt you guys for answers (mostly you, minho and aris)

sadly, with all the tests and abuse, you ended up weaker and weaker and passed in your sleep

you, sonya, aris and minho shared a room, and she was the first to awake as usual

aris and minho woke up and noticed you weren't moving under your blankets, considering you twitched and rolled around a lot in the mornings

sonya lightly tapped your shoulder to wake you up for breakfast and bam

she was sobbing up til some guards came to get you

your face was pale, both eyes swollen from bruising and crying, it was awful

the boys heald her on the floor all day, barely any food being eaten by them

it was an awful couple months, especially because she didn't know what they did to you after

HARRIET

sadly, there casualties in the scorch before you made it to the Right Arm

youd been bit by a crank and sadly weren't immune

you tried hiding it from her and sonya but you couldn't for long

by the time you made it to the mall you were already dead

you were so weak and sick, you couldn't go on

you were too scared to do it yourself, so harriet did it for you

she'd never felt so broken in her life, her heart dropped when she heard you thud to the ground

her and sonya rested you in the old fountain in the center of the mall

had a very small puddle of water left and some dead bushes around it, it was the only fresh nature left around at all

they wanted to leave you in peace so they left you in the most earthy spot they could

she writes your name on the rock at the safe haven to commemorate your memory

she also glazes her fingers over it and talks to you late at night, every single night for 863 nights

after a while it became a bit more infrequent, but she makes sure to talk to you at least two or three times a week

she sees you in the sunsets and sunrises, in flowers and trees

she doesn't know how to explain it but she will forever swear on it

sonya and aris (and fry) understand her completely on that

they're always on the hunt to find you in nature, whether it be leaves, constellations, sea shells, critters etc

that group 💔💔 doing anything they can to find you around, even if fry didn't know you

he understands how it feels to find loved ones in common things

Sonya’s hair colour?!

Her hair is described to be “reddish blond” in scorch trials while in fever code is described to be dark, “Thomas saw a girl curled up under a blanket, her arms wrapped around a pillow dark hair spilling out.” And later on when Newt says goodbye to her.

I get that people’s hair can change colour over time but this was what, 2-3 year difference? (Just before they go into the maze to when Thomas meets group B)
