my personal life is down the shitter at the moment and im sad and stressed, so in the minimal time i've spent writing i am simply producing the most depressing angsty shit i've ever created lmao

so yeah just a heads up that an update is still like two weeks away

I AM SO SORRY THAT THIS IS SO LATE. I meant to do this sooner I swear, I just had no idea how to do what I needed to on Google Docs mobile. Anyway, I went the platonic route sorta, it can read as romantic as well, sooo HERE!!!!

Alaska and California-

Cuddles, all the cuddles, it’s what they do like 80% of the time when they’re together

Alaska will just pick Cali up at random, like it’s the more normal thing in the world, and Cali just takes it

They don’t actually talk much when together, well Alaska doesn’t, Cali yaps

Cali somehow managed to get Alaska to watch anime with them one time, it ended at ep 4 when girl + dog = lot’s of crying from the both of them

Alaska has a pet bear and Cali has the insatiable need to pet and cuddle things that can kill him

They have gone to multiple sports games together, despite Alaska not liking the crowds and Cali not like the noise or the crowds, according to Cali it’s “a bonding experience to watch your team win while on the bring of either shutting down or a panic attack” 

Cali does sketches of Alaska throughout the day, sometimes the drawings include other states but normally it’s just him, then at the end of the day Cali will give them all to Alaska who proceeds to put them all on the fridge in the garage

Winter vacay is determined by a coin flip, it’s normally with Alaska (it’s not rigged, Alaska just always picks the right side)

Cali tried to get Alaska to understand the appeal video games, then ended up getting demolished by him because of tilt control on Mario Kart

Alaska taught Cali how to ice fish, how to safely skate on open ice, and how to be silent in the woods

The two are just very close, Cali is an outcast not by choice and Alaska is one by choice, it’s an interesting relationship

Cali was incredibly close to telling Alaska about the fact that he writes fanfics, they didn’t but the fact that he was going to is something of note

Cali steals Alaska’s hoodies and shirts since they SWIM in them

Have I mentioned cuddles? Because that is basically what the whole relationship is built upon, cuddles. So. Many. Cuddles.

theres something about. how a lonely place of dying is written so well by the way it hides tims identity entirely for half of it. the narration is disembodied, its withholding info, you only see glimpses of limbs. and how red robin was written so well in such a way that information is withheld. that the narration is unreliable. something about good stories centered on tim seem to have this in common. that the story is withheld. that the reader isnt given all the information. that your initial assessment when you read will change.

okay CONDENSED VERSION

the prose edda was written in the thirteenth century. (it's commonly dated to around 1220.) snorri himself lived from 1179 to 1241, which makes him solidly high medieval by a european standard and medieval (ie not viking age) by a scandinavian standard.

iceland converted to christianity in the year 1000 AD through a resolution carried in the alþingi (this is according to njáls saga as we do not actually have contemporary written material from that era. pinch of salt as to the precise date, and of course the nature of conversion is such that it doesn't happen overnight, even in a small population like late viking age iceland, but nevertheless -- iceland was very decidedly no longer pagan by the 1200's)

(this leads into a Big Old Debate about the nature of oral memory and how much and how reliably material can be preserved in that manner, especially detail, and for how many generations. this is contentious and im not gonna get into it but it's a factor)

snorri sturluson was a christian

this matters because although he was interested in the culture -- especially the poetics (we'll come to that) of the past, he was not a part of that culture and he was viewing it from the outside. his interest was antiquarian.

snorri sturluson's edda is an educational work in poetry. it is a poetic. a book of skáldskapr, ie of the poetical arts. the poetry of viking age iceland, the poetical culture that medieval iceland inherited, was one based on a huge and complex metaphorical system which directly referenced pre-christian mythology. to take a classic example, instead of simply saying 'gold', you might say 'sif's hair', but to understand this you'd need to know the story where sif loses her hair due to a loki fuckup and is gifted new hair made from gold.

in short, the loss of the knowledge of these stories would completely hamstring all successive generations of poets -- not only would they no longer be able to participate in the poetic tradition, they wouldn't even be able to comprehend and appreciate the work of their predecessors.

the narrative part of snorri's edda is the one most people are familiar with. it is even often printed separately. but his work is actually comprised of four sections: a prologue dedicated to explaining that the pagan gods were actually men (see euhemerism), the narrative portion (gylfaginning), a section which explains a large number of poetical metaphors (skáldskaparmál), and a section which gives examples of various poetical metres a skáld should know (háttatal).

FINALLY: snorri was a scholar. and medieval scholars took a different approach to their material than modern historians. they were unafraid to edit, embellish, pick and choose, compile and systematise as they saw fit. (we have some notion of what types of sources snorri used and some of his material survives in other sources, but much does not, leaving his account the only one, which means we can't check his work, as it were.)

we must assume that the prose edda synthesises material that was varied and contradictory -- folk tradition always is (think of how many versions ballads and folk songs survive in). we must assume that there are versions which were lost. we must also assume that his christianity has affected the material to *some* degree, though how much is again a Big Debate (for example we may point to the part where he says that loki was outwardly beautiful but wicked -- afaik there is no physical description of loki anywhere else, and it's tempting to see a parallel here to christian notions of temptation).

TLDR snorri has created a *version* of norse myth. and while we should be incredibly grateful that someone actually sat down and created a literal guidebook like this we must also remember by whom it was made, why, and when. (✨source criticism!✨ [philology jazz hands])

(this isn't even getting into how the narratives of mythology correlate -- and don't -- with the evidence of worship uncovered by archaeology but POST TOO LONG)

fair warning tho i tend not to fw realistic anatomy at all n honestly u can do multiple arms in a LOT of ways so DEF dont take this as law or THE way to do so nor is this very detailed. just mostly how i tend to draw them :>

i at least tend to start with wherever the normal or "main" arm(s) would be, regular shit having a grasp on general arm anatomy in and outside of style is really helpful, not necessarily required but ive found looking at how the muscles form sections/shapes in the arm to be useful

then it rlly depends on how *insert character im drawing here* and where theyr placed so ill be using my Narrator and V1 as examples bc tbh thats the only examples i rlly have rn

Narr's r pretty much just shoulder/arms added to the waist, nothin special. they work and look the same as the main arm, just coming out of the torso tbf though, Narrs body isnt rlly real and more akin to a VERY immersive VRC avatar than an actual body i use them more for expressiveness more than for actual purpose. and either have both sets interact or have each set do smthn different indepentantly as if they were the only set

Alternatively i kinda just stack them together, though it gets harder to place them in a way that looks good or plausible the more condensed it is. at least for how ive been drawing how i think v1's arms work ive been kinda drawing them "added/stacked onto" the connection between the normal/main arm and torso. s mostly just cause i...dont really know what to do with them. im still really new to drawing mechs in general and in my brain theyr just somehow occupy the same space (ignore that neither of these have Whiplash arm please)

both ways r pretty similar in theory but the second rlly limits each ones range of motion, arms cant exactly go through eachother...

either way i do so they r a pain in the ASS to pose but thinking abt how the arms would move/interact in their shared occupied space is very helpful, and especially important to think abt when drawing at angles

I’m of the opinion that homegirl has some pretty bad insomnia (whaaat TOTALLY not projecting definitely) and writing out jokes or cataloguing her day just really helps her out. It’s a distraction and also helps focus her brain in a way that makes it easier to sleep??? Idk. That diary is just important to her.

He and Joel have Hermes, but much of their interaction has been through signs as they trade weekend custody. There was implied, ahem, encounters with Scott earlier in the season, and that moment on the Nether roof during the crossover when Sausage had a small crisis about Pearl, but not much since then. He has pestered Jimmy, but The Sheriff might brush off more menacing behavior.

Now that we have a FtF promo, do you have any predictions?

Philip is almost definitely not going to be defeated in FtF. I'm pretty steadfast on that. I don't know if The Collector as a Problem will be entirely resolved, but I think he's going to be the main issue in this ep. Philip will retreat to lick his wounds, probably cause some trouble, and then help with a cliffhanger ending? Something like that.

I think there's going to be A Lot of Glyphs in this episode. Luz was looking through her memories of powerful Glyph moments (when she met Philip, and then fighting Grom) and I'm wondering if we won't see Camila herself use one at some point! That would be really cool.

Last but not least... uh. I'm still kinda hoping the portal took them all straight to the Clawthornes' house, but it's not really looking to be the case unfortunately. I have one week to be delusional about that.

what pokemon would your characters from spitfire have? (sorry if you dont know all that much about pokemon)

my knowledge of pokemon is SO spotty past the first two gens and most of my knowledge is from my wife so i think most of these are gonna be mostly VIBES instead of specific pokemon so if yall have suggestions im all ears

feon: honestly not sure wjat to do about feon since like… they might just BE a pokemon, you know? like a legendary dragon pokemon with the ability to take human form. but i also feel like that is a really weird answer to give considering all the sex they have with humans.

so assuming they are a trainer, they would definitely have a charizard. feon would pick pokemon that looked really Cool and would probably mostly have dragons.

caed: i think at least for the aesthetic/patriotism he’d have to have at least one pokemon that was dragon and/or fire type. im gonna say he has a centiscorch because devin had one in their sword/shield team and i liked him a lot. and caed would have at least one steel pokemong for sword boy reasons. probably that sword/shield pokemon everyone hates thats just a sword and/or shield.

but also he just has a cubone. for SAD boy reasons.

allene: definitely psychic pokemon!! im not sure which ones. she’d probably want pokemon that could help with her work in one way or another so she’d defs have a rotom. i think that’s how it’s spelled. she’d also have at least one ice type to help her traverse harsh voswainina winters.

lysithea: primary types i can see for her would be fairy, dark, and water. she defs has one of those fancy new rapidashes. maybe a ninetails just bc it suits her idk. the one that looks like a key ring with the headcanon that it could help her pick locks lol

fidelity: i think fidelity has two kinds of pokemon: 1. relatively weak ‘mon that are cute, frequently common/unwanted sometimes early route mon that ppl always try to get rid of, like an unevolved caterpie or furret. does cutiefly fall under this category? i have no idea when in its game it pops up i just know it has fidelity vibes. 2. pokemon abandoned/unwanted by other trainers for various reasons. maybe it looks scary but is weak. maybe it’s just stinky because its a gloom (coincidentally my favorite pokemon when i was a child).

clemence: i have nothing other than new pokemon snap to base this on, but i think she’d have a gardevoir. idk why. just has the right vibes. maybe a carbink idk anything about it but i think clemence would collect rare/lesser seen pokemon, but not necessarily powerful ones. i think she would take pride in finding hidden gems and bringing them into light. not in like a boastful, egotistical way, but clemence is someone who finds satisfaction in polishing and bringing appreciation to the rare gems.
