Pairing: Ominis Gaunt x Fem!Reader
Serpents and Roses
In the midst of spring, after the start of the second semester, the Hogwarts grounds are decorated with an array of colorful blossoms, creating the most beautiful scene as you step out of Professor Garlick's greenhouse with Sebastian. The air is filled with the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers, and the bright colors of tulips and daffodils paint the landscape.
"It's so beautiful," Sebastian sighs as the two of you stand side by side.
"I know," you reply. "It's nice to see the school come back to life. Though I will admit I did enjoy when everyone was gone."
Sebastian laughs. "I'm sure you did. With all that alone time with Ominis, it's a wonder the two of you ever left his dorm room again."
You chuckle and shake your head at his comment.
"But I'm happy for the two of you. You seem happy."
"I am," you admit to him. "Happier than I've been in a long time."
"I can see that," he says, nodding. "You seem a lot less angry now."
"Angry? When was I ever angry?" you scoff. "Are you referring to when you asked me to a wand duel knowing full well I was a muggle? Or when you and Nott made jokes about me being a blood traitor? Or maybe the time you put snow down the back of my shirt."
Sebastian chuckles at the last example, his blue eyes sparkling in amusement. "That last one was Weasley's idea and you know it! But seriously, Y/N, I've never seen you this content. And honestly, it's kind of refreshing."
You shrug, a small smile playing on your lips. "Maybe it's just that I'm starting to feel more comfortable with the people around me. And the other way around, too, I think."
Just then, Ominis approaches you both and your eyes light up. "Ominis!" you gasp, suddenly remembering something. "Hey, there was something I wanted to show you. I can't believe I almost forgot!"
"What? Really?" Sebastian chimes in. "Are you just saying that so I'll leave?"
"No," you reply. "I did almost forget about it. I'm sorry, Sebastian, I didn't mean to come off rude. I promise we can talk more later. Ominis, are you free right now?"
"Sure, Y/N," he answers. "Why, what's up?"
"It's a surprise!" you smile, tugging on his arm.
"Oh, no," Sebastian rolls his eyes. "Good luck," he then adds before nudging Ominis in the arm. "But don't have too much fun."
"Shut up," Ominis sighs, nudging Sebastian back.
"Bye!" you call out as you drag him away, waving goodbye to Sebastian.
"Where are we going?" Ominis questions, trying to keep up with your pace. But you don't give him any hints as you lead him to the back of the school.
"Just a sec," you sing as you rustle around a nearby bush, leaving Ominis visibly confused. "Ta-da!" you announce, pulling out a bike.
"What is it?" he asks as he approaches you and places his hands on the object.
"A bike!" you announce proudly. "I asked Luna to get one for me during break. Now we can finally go somewhere together."
"It's...a bike," Ominis mutters.
"Yep!"
"How does it work without magic?"
"It's pretty much the same thing. You pedal the wheels with your feet. And then you steer with the handles," you explain, gesturing towards the different parts of the bike despite his inability to see them. "Simple, right?"
"Ah," he nods, his brows slightly furrowed.
"I just thought that since you gave me a ride on your broom it'd only be fair to offer the same courtesy. So, here, hop on," you offer, and place the bike's kickstand down before sitting on it yourself.
Ominis reluctantly gets on the bike behind you and so you begin the ride through the Hogwarts grounds. The wind whistles past, carrying the scent of blooming flowers, and you breathe it in deeply.
"Isn't this amazing, Ominis? It's like flying, but on the ground," you grin.
Ominis nods in agreement as he holds on tightly to your waist, keeping close. You feel his warm breath on the nape of your neck, causing goosebumps to rise along your skin.
"Are we going fast enough?" you ask him.
"Yeah," he nods.
However, as you venture further, the sky begins to darken, and raindrops start to fall. Yet, you both continue to ride.
"It's raining. Are we going to be okay?" he questions you as raindrops begin to hit your face.
"Don't worry, a little rain never hurt anyone. Besides, it's all part of the fun," you smile.
Despite Ominis' initial worrying, he finds himself enjoying the unconventional method of travel. He laughs and holds you tighter as the two of you make your way through the storm.
Soon, the rain falls faster, and thunder begins to boom overhead. You pull the bike over at a nearby hamlet and find shelter under the cover of a small, abandoned hut.
"Okay, you win," Ominis smiles softly as you pull him inside the dry room. "That was... unexpectedly fun. I never thought I'd enjoy a bike ride in the rain."
"Muggle things aren't so bad," you laugh. "Besides, I don't think I've ever been over here before."
Ominis sighs. "I guess we'll have to use my wand to help us find the way back."
"Sorry about that," you chuckle softly. "Do you think it'll stop soon?"
"Doubt it," he shakes his head. "We might just have to go for it."
"Okay," you agree. Together, you get back on the bike and pedal through the rain-soaked grounds, sharing a mixture of laughter and exhileration.
Upon returning to the castle, you're drenched but still smiling. Ominis guides the bike back into the bush where you had been keeping it. However, your laughter calls the attention of Professor Weasley who catches sight of you both.
"What on earth happened to you two? Out in this rain? Explain yourselves!" she gasps.
You gulp, momentarily at a loss for words. Ominis, quick on his feet, steps in.
"I apologize Professor," he begins. "Y/N here was helping me with a bit of disorientation after losing my wand and we got caught in the rain. I appreciate her help but I can assure you it won't happen again."
Professor Weasley eyes you both, seemingly satisfied with his explaination. "Well," she clears her throat. "Get yourselves dred up and be more cautious of the weather next time."
"We will, Professor," you bow slightly before taking Ominis by the hand and walking past her. "Shit, that was close."
"You're lucky I was with you, Y/N. Otherwise she would have had your ass," Ominis smirks.
"Aw come on," you chuckle. "Professor Weasley likes me... I think."
Ominis shrugs. "You'd be surprised how quickly the professors can change their opinions of students."
"Well, thanks anyway," you say, glancing up at him. "That was..."
"Very memorable," he finishes for you. "Thank you, Y/N. It really was an experience. Though I think I'll stick to flying from now on."
"Suit yourself," you smile, though a part of you hopes this will be the start of many bike rides in the future.

So, it is actaully a quite a weird thing that I haven't done this before, but I finally got around to writing the conversation that Gastón and Nina had over the phone in S3E59. Enjoy.
“Gastón?”
“Hey ... I, I don’t know if I should be doing this, but…” the voice came from the phone. “After everything, you don’t have to do this, I can hang up if you don't want to hear from me.”
“No… It’s fine,” Nina had gotten quite caught quite off guard, but everything from her expressions to the body language had changed. The happiness was practically radiating from her eyes.
“Okay, well,” A nervous laugh came from the phone, “but I just wanted to see how you are. It’s—It’s been a while.”
“It, it has.” Nina nodded. “Uhm, I’m doing well. You?”
“That’s good to hear. I’m doing fine, keeping busy, all that stuff. How’s Roller…Matteo’s been telling me about the festival.”
“Yes, we’re training for it a lot.”
“We? You’re doing it too?”
“Yeah, I thought I might. Luna has been training me but…”
“But what?”
“I still feel like I’m gonna trip on my own feet.” Nina said a little bit nervously.
“That won’t happen. You’ve come a long way on the rink. Me if anyone knows how far you have come. Trust me.”
“Well, thank you,” Nina blushed.
“But uhm,” There had been a brief silence between them before Gastón had continued. Now he sounded nervous. “You truly are doing okay…after you know…”
“I guess well as I can…”
“Nina, look, I’m really sorry—”
“You don’t need to apologize.”
“I want to.” Gastón continued, “It was a bit fast…but it's been a while now, and uhm … Have you—have you met anyone?”
Silence.
“Nina?” Gastón’s voice came out of the phone a little bit concerned. “You there?”
“Yes, yes, I’m here.” Nina seemed to snap back into the moment.
“Is something wrong?”
“No, no, nothing’s wrong.”
“You sure about that? You’re acting weirdly.”
“I am?”
“I don’t need to see you to tell you that you’re nervous.” Gastón's voice faltered smally. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing is wrong…” Nina swallowed, “Just, that… Uh, you asked if I had met anyone and… the answer… it is, it’s yes. I mean I have, a little bit. His, his name is…Eric. The rink assistant.”
“Oh.” Gastón’s voice came from the other end.
“I’m sorr—”
“Why are you apologizing?”
“I thought…” Nina continued. She looked like she was about to cry.
“Thought what?” There was another falter in Gastón’s voice again, “I’m glad you’re doing well and… I’m happy for you. This is really great. You deserve to be happy and all I want for you is your happiness. You know that.”
“I do.” Nina smiled smally, but that smile quickly disappeared off her face. She looked like she wanted to say something more but decided not to.
“Well, if there is nothing else. I’ll leave you be. I’m just glad we’re able to talk, since we’re friends.”
This time Nina was about to open her mouth, but the call disconnected before she was able to. “Yeah, friends.”

My Fair Luna
Chapter 8
If Emma had known the sheer amount of work that was waiting for her at this new job, she would've thought twice.
But she still would have taken it, if she was honest.
So the grounds needed work, and tasks needed delegating…and room assignments completed and gardening to oversee and meal planning to go over and a new row of houses needed to go up so supplies needed to be ordered and patches of trees felled and kids activities to plan and…
Oh boy
A lot of work needed to be done. It had Emma wondering just what was so important that the boss man and his family had to leave. Because she was starting to feel like they had left all these people high and dry.
Or they had more faith in Rex and Luke than was appropriate. Sorry guys.
Either way, by the time Sunday had rolled around, the time for her to phone in to her parents, Emma was surprised to find herself smack dab in the middle of a construction site as people began directing all their questions towards her about what to do.
It was Luna this and Luna that. Honestly she didn't know what to think about that nickname at first. It didn't really seem to fit in with the whole wolf theme. Until she realized it meant moon, and wolves howl at the moon, and right now all these people were 'howling' at her expecting her to know and/or fix everything.
And here I thought it was because I was pasty white…she grumbled internally.
The first time someone had called her that, she can't quite remember who now that everyone does it, Faye and Jade had practically glared holes into the poor soul's head. She wasn't sure what the big deal was. After all, having a nickname means she's one of them now, right?
When she said it was ok to call her that, everyone relaxed and seemed so happy about it. Further making her feel like she was missing some vital peice if the puzzle that was Camp Lobo. But Jade and Faye seemed particularly thrilled and called her Luna often. She was coming to really enjoy their company.
A tune began playing softly from her pocket, catching several people's attention. Emma pulled her phone from her jeans and answered it without looking. She knew who it was based on the song.
"Hey dad," She greeted, unknowingly perking interest around her as sensitive ears listened in. "What's up?"
"Nothing much, Jo and I were just waiting on your call."
Emma paused. "Right, sorry." She blew out a breath and motioned to the foreman that she was stepping away. "Everything's been so hectic since day one I haven't had a chance to do much but eat and sleep."
"So I take it you got the job?"
"Yeah, that very day in fact." Emma figured her dad would pick up on the oddities like she had. Only he'd understand them better.
"That day?"
"On the spot." Emma smiled as a few workers carrying insulation passed her. "You could tell he was in over his head."
"Bossman was that desperate?"
"He's actually acting boss." That was the kicker, and she knew her dad was thinking the same thing she has because he let out a long hum.
"Did he get permission from Bossman?"
Emma blew out a breath. "Not that I know of."
Her dad hummed again. "You do realize that could make you temporary hire."
"Yeah, I know."
"Do you like it there?"
"I love it, it's absolutely gorgeous. I'll take some pictures of the grounds when I get the chance. You and mom would love it here." She gushed, not realizing the people around her were smiling.
"Ok, camp rat. How's the food? Is it as good as your mom's?"
"Some is, some isn't. But I don't think anyone's gonna top her homemade bread."
"True-"
"Luna can you-" Just as the worker interrupt her a few of the workers around her shushed him.
"Someone calling you?" Her dad asked.
"Yeah, I'm literally in the middle of putting up the inner walls of the new building."
"Oh?"
"Hey man, I'm only overseeing the project and helping the foreman stay on task. Everybody already knows what they're doing."
"Alright, if you need any help give me a call."
"I will. Love you dad." She had already thought of calling him since he was a painter/contractor but the workers here had everything handled.
"Love you too-"
"LOVE YOU BABY!" Her mom yelled into her dad's ear. Not that it bothered him, he's half deaf. But it blared across her phone speaker.
"Love you too mom." Emma lightly rolled her eyes.
"Hey, before you go just…be careful and try not to step on any toes."
"That's the plan." She sighed again.
"Alright, love you baby."
"Love you too, bye."
"Bye."
Line Break
Fay and Jade stood aside and watched as Luna Emma spoke to her parents. The week had gone a lot smoother than they could've hoped. Except for the fact that everyone knows…
Faye was not the only one to apparently recognize her for what she is. On one hand, this made her transition into the pack rather smooth, on the other…they were never going to hear the end of it from Matt when he gets back.
"I think it happened this way for reason." Jade, like Faye, didn't take her eyes off of their Luna.
"And why is that?" Faye asked.
"Think about it. Not only did she come when we needed her the most, but do you think if Alpha Matt had met her earlier that Alpha and Luna would have accepted her?"
Faye frowned. "Why wouldn't they? She is our next Luna. Everyone can tell."
"Strange isn't it?" Jade continued. "That we would be able to recognize her?" Faye glanced at Jade. "You knowing is understandable. But the rest of us should just see a human. So why are we connecting with her so easily?"
Fay had no answers. Now that she thought about it too…it was more than odd. It was unheard of. But there had to be a reason.
"And then there's the timing." Jade pointed out. "She came when we needed her. Almost as if she's proving herself without the pressure of being ridiculed by those in power because she is the highest rank among us."
"You think Alpha Derek and Luna Mae would have rejected her." Faye swallowed thickly, she didn't like the thought.
"Undoubtedly." Jade didn't hesitate to answer.

when did you first see let’s go luna? and when did you realize you had feelings for luna?
I think back in either late 2019 or early 2020 I had a cold, and I didn't have anything better to do so I turned on the TV. Idk why but it was turned to PBS kids so I just watched it all day. Let's Go Luna came on and I thought it seemed like a cute show so I watched it. As soon as I saw Luna, I fell in love so I added her to the list. She didn’t start out as a main f/o, but around the middle of 2020, I started thinking about her a lot, and imagined her encouraging me, and doing this really helped me learn how to love myself, and before I knew it, she was instantly my all time main f/o :]
I swear it's almost as if she were made for me or something since she's everything that I want in an irl partner. She's kind, fun (but knows when to be serious) and she's good with kids and honestly??? She's adorable and every time she's on screen I instantly want to kiss her <3

A Doorstep of Affection
pairing: wolfstar (remus x sirius)
genre: fluff
warnings: none
words: 2815
a/n: this is set after the second wizarding war, both sirius and remus survived, remus never married tonks and harry is living with sirius. so yeah, fluff all around :D
i sort of see this as an epilogue for my last post but it doesn’t necessarily have to be, i suppose.
“And checkmate,” Ron said, knocking Harry’s king off the board. Harry buried his face in his hands.
“With a pawn,” he groaned. “That’s just humiliating.”
“Right because the last five losses were far more dignified,” Ginny said.
“No, no, he’s right, it’s worse with a pawn,” Neville said. “I mean, of all the players to defeat your king it has to be the tiniest one. It’s an extra slap in the face.”
“I think that’s a lot like life,” Luna said. “I mean, the tiniest people or the tiniest creatures are always the ones we underestimate but they have a way of proving themselves in the end. Just look at all the damage Wrackspurts can cause humans if they want to. And they’re small enough to fit in our ears.”
“Yes, well at any rate,” Hermione said, “well done, Ron.” She kissed his cheek and Ron’s ears went red.
“You guys are cute,” Harry said. “Disgustingly cute.”
“Oh shut up, Harry,” Hermione said. Sirius let out a laugh as he walked into the living room with a cup of coffee.
“What’s so funny?” Harry asked.
“Oh it’s nothing,” Sirius said. “It’s just your dad used to say the same thing to me and Remus when we were at school.”
“You and Professor Lupin used to date?” Hermione asked.
“Yeah, when we were in our fifth year at Hogwarts,” Sirius said. “And call him Remus.”
“Wait you’re gay?” Harry asked in surprise.
“Yeah.”
“You didn’t know?” Ginny said to Harry, raising her eyebrows.
“You did?!”
“I guessed it,” she said.
“Did you know?” Harry asked Ron
“I mean I sort of suspected,” Ron shrugged.
“Does that mean Lup— does that mean Remus is gay too?” Harry asked.
“Did you honestly not know that?” Hermione asked.
“How did you know?!”
“He taught us for a year, Harry!” Hermione said, laughing.
“So?”
“He had a Pride flag in his office,” Neville said quietly, giving Harry a small exasperated smile.
“He did?” Harry said, turning to Hermione. She pinched the bridge of her nose.
“You may be the Chosen One, Harry, but you’re dumb as shit,” she sighed but grinned at her idiotic best friend.
“Remus had a Pride flag in his office?” Sirius said.
“Yeah,” Ron said. “A small one on a stick.”
“Did he keep it in a coffee mug with his pens?” Sirius asked. Harry thought he sounded excited.
“Yeah,” Hermione said. “How did you know?”
“We used to keep that flag in our apartment,” he said. “In the coffee mug and everything.”
“You lived together?” Harry asked.
“Yeah,” Sirius said. “For like 3 years after Hogwarts.”
“But you’re not together anymore?” Hermione asked. “Wait. I’m sorry, I don’t mean to pry. You don’t have to answer that.”
“That’s alright,” Sirius said. “No, we’re not together anymore. We haven’t been since…” He trailed off but they knew what he meant.
“But you want to be,” said Luna who had been rather quiet until now. “Don’t you?”
“I—” Sirius turned to look at her in surprise, “it’s more complicated than that.” Luna shrugged.
“Not necessarily,” she said. “Have you told him?”
“Well, no,” Sirius said. “But… you wouldn’t understand. It’s been too long, too much has happened. I–It doesn’t make sense anymore.”
“Why not?” Neville asked. “You want it, don’t you? It makes sense to you. Who’s to say that Remus isn’t thinking the same thing?”
“He isn’t,” Sirius said.
“You don’t know that,” Ginny said.
“Well, you don’t know that he is,” Sirius said.
“And you won’t know if you don’t ask,” Ron said, shrugging.
“There’s no harm in asking,” Hermione said. Sirius looked around at all of them before sighing, standing up and turning away.
“Merlin, you know you’re lonely when you talk to 17-year-olds about your problems,” Sirius muttered.
“We are right though,” Ginny called after Sirius as he disappeared into the kitchen. Sirius was saved from having to answer when Neville stood up.
“Sorry guys, I have to go,” he said. “Gran wanted me home ten minutes ago.”
“I should go too,” Luna said. “I told Daddy that I’d fish for Freshwater Plimpies so we can make soup tonight.” They said their goodbyes and Apparated straight out of the apartment.
“I should go check on my parents,” Hermione said, checking her watch. Harry and Ron had accompanied Hermione to Australia and managed to track down her parents. They managed to undo the Memory Charm with the help of several healers from St Mungo’s but both Mr and Mrs Granger were still quite disoriented and the healers decided to keep them at the hospital for a few days to ensure that they did not do any damage to themselves. Hermione had gone to the hospital to see them several times in the past few days. Harry had gone with her a few times and her parents did seem to be improving significantly.
“I’ll come with you,” Ron said, immediately. Hermione smiled.
“I’ll see you guys later then?” Harry said.
“I mean, if you want to come—” Hermione started.
“We really don’t mind, mate,” Ron said.
“Nah, you two go ahead,” Harry said.
“Okay,” Hermione said.
“But you’re coming to dinner at my place tonight,” Ron said. “Right?”
“Yeah,” Harry said with a smile. “Yeah, thanks.” Ron gave him a thumbs up.
“Ginny, tell mum I’ll help with dinner later, okay?” he said.
“Yeah okay,” she said. “I need to go home now anyway.”
“Bye guys,” Harry said.
“Bye, Harry,” they said. “And thanks for having us over, Sirius.”
“You’re welcome here any time,” Sirius said. “Hermione, say hi to your parents for us.”
“We will,” Hermione said. She took Ron’s hand and Disapparated. Ginny turned to Harry.
“I have to help my mum with something right now but Fred and George are coming over before dinner. If you come early too we can play Quidditch.”
“Yeah, that sounds good,” Harry said.
“So I’ll see you later?” she said.
“Yeah,” he said. “Bye, Ginny.”
“Bye,” she said. And she too Disapparated.
“You want some coffee?” Sirius called from the kitchen.
“Uh sure,” Harry said. He entered the kitchen and Sirius handed him a cup of iced coffee.
“Sirius, can I ask you something?”
“Yeah, of course,” Sirius said. “What’s up?”
“What Luna said earlier… is it true?” Harry asked. “Do you still like Remus?” Sirius sighed.
“Yeah,” he said finally. “Yeah, it’s true.”
“Why don’t you tell him?” Harry said. Sirius hesitated before answering.
“Because if he doesn’t feel the same way, it’ll be awkward,” Sirius said, deciding to be honest with Harry. “And he’s still my friend. I don’t want to lose him.”
“Sirius, do you really think that after everything you and Remus have been through, that’s what would make things awkward?” Harry asked. Sirius was silent. Harry was making a valid point. Both he and Remus had been through hell and back. And Remus hadn’t hated him the last time Sirius had asked him out, back in their fifth year. Look even if Remus doesn’t like you back, James had said to him back then, you won’t lose him. He loves you too much to let that happen even if it’s not in the way you want it to be. Suddenly Sirius forgot every reason he had for keeping his feelings hidden from Remus.
“You’re… not wrong,” Sirius said slowly.
“Does that mean you’ll tell him?” Harry asked.
“I—” Sirius hesitated. “I’ll think about it.”
“That’s great,” Harry said with a grin. “And… it’ll be okay,” he added, “no matter what happens.” Sirius smiled.
“Thanks, Harry. How did you get so wise?” he said jokingly, messing up his godson’s hair.
“Hermione is rubbing off on me,” Harry said. Sirius laughed.
“I should go,” Harry said, checking his watch. “I’m going to play Quidditch with the Weasley’s.”
“Have fun,” Sirius said.
“You’ll come to dinner, won’t you?” Harry asked.
“Yeah, if you want me there,” Sirius said.
“Thanks, Sirius,” Harry said. He hesitated for a moment, seeming unsure of himself before hugging Sirius. Sirius was taken by surprise but hugged him back.
“Is everything okay, Harry?” Sirius asked.
“Yeah,” Harry said with a grin. “Everything is fine.”
“You know you can talk to me if you want,” Sirius said. Harry nodded.
“I know.”
“Then go crush those gingers at Quidditch,” Sirius said. Harry laughed.
“We’ll see,” he said, grabbing his wand off the kitchen counter so he could Apparate. “And Sirius?”
“Yeah?”
“Go get him,” Harry said and Sirius could almost hear it.
“You know, Harry,” Sirius said, “that’s exactly what your dad said to me the first time I decided to ask Remus out.” A grin spread wide across Harry’s face at the comparison between him and his dad.
“Really?” he asked.
“Word for word,” Sirius laughed. “You’re more like him than you know. Prongslet.” Harry smiled.
“Bye… Uncle Pads.” Harry Disapparated and Sirius was left standing in the kitchen with a coffee cup, stunned.
---------
Sirius was standing on the doorstep of his and Remus’ old flat. Although he supposed it could hardly be referred to as his anymore. Sirius had spent more time in Azkaban than he had in this apartment with Remus. Remus had lived here alone for 17 years. No, it was not his flat anymore. But he still remembered when it was. He remembered it as clearly as if it had happened yesterday. The day he and Remus stood on this very doorstep, key in hand. The days when they had been young and carefree and so very in love. Sirius remembered the way they had kissed on the doorstep. He remembered the way he’d whispered in Remus’ ear. I love you. He remembered the way Remus had squeezed his hands, amber eyes glowing, kissed him again and said, “I love you too, Sirius.” He remembered the gentle way Remus had said his name. And all on this very doorstep.
Sirius stood here years later, having survived the First Wizarding War, twelve years in Azkaban and now the Second War. Both of these he survived but just barely. And now he was back. Standing here on Remus’ doorstep hoping Remus might agree for it to be their doorstep again. So Sirius took a breath and knocked on the door. And when Remus opened it, a smile flickering across his features when he saw who it was, Sirius forgot how to breathe.
“Hey, Sirius,” he said. “Is, uh, is everything okay?”
“What? Oh yeah. Yeah, everything is fine,” Sirius said. “I came, um. I just came to… to ask you something. If that’s okay.”
“Sure,” Remus said. “Do you wanna come in?”
“No, that’s alright,” Sirius said. “I won’t… I don’t want to intrude, I just wanted to ask… uh—” Sirius couldn’t find the words. He felt 15 all over again. Come to think of it, the first time he’d asked Remus out had been on a doorstep as well. Remus had been standing inside their dorm at Hogwarts, leaning on the door frame and Sirius standing just outside on the doorstep, nervous as he decided to confess his feelings to Remus after hiding them for over a year. And now he was back in the same place, in another time. And apparently, Remus was thinking the same thing.
“Well, I’m getting deja vu,” he said with a quick smile.
“Yeah,” Sirius said, letting out a nervous laugh.
“Fifth year,” Remus said. “The day you, um… the day you asked me out.” Sirius nodded. “Before everything…”
“Got so fucked up,” Sirius finished.
“Yeah,” Remus said, looking down.
“Look, I–I know a lot has changed since then,” Sirius started, “but… but not everything has to.” Remus looked back up at him.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean…” Sirius took a deep breath, “I mean that I’m here for the same reason that I came to you that night in fifth year. I… I’m still in love with you, Remus. And I want to be with you. And I understand completely if that’s not something you want anymore. Really, I do. No hard feelings. I just… I figured you deserve to know.” Remus stared blankly at him.
“You… you’re still in love with me?” he said quietly.
“Yeah,” Sirius said. “I’m sorry, Remus, I shouldn’t have—”
“Oh thank god,” Remus said. He threw his arms around Sirius and pulled him into a hug. “Thank fucking Merlin.” Sirius was taken aback but he wrapped his arms around Remus and hugged him back. They stood on that doorstep, their doorstep, the doorstep of affection, and hugged for longer than they had in years. Sirius and Remus had both been alone for so long, both trapped in solitude with nothing but their worst memories. And now that they had one another again, now that they were safe with their arms around each other, Sirius felt like nothing could hurt him anymore. He’d lived through the worst of it. Now it was just him and Remus. Together.
“I missed you so much,” Sirius whispered in his ear. “I’ve missed you so fucking much.”
“I missed you too,” Remus whispered back. Sirius pulled away from the hug and looked right into Remus’ beautiful, golden eyes.
“Can I kiss you?” he asked.
“Yeah,” Remus breathlessly. “Yeah of course you can.” Sirius felt the butterflies in his stomach; he really did feel 15 again. Sirius leaned in and ghosted his lips across Remus’, gentle and unsure.
“Sirius?” Remus whispered, their mouths so close that Remus’ lip caught on Sirius’ tooth. Sirius swallowed hard.
“Yeah?”
“I love you too.” Sirius wrapped his hands around Remus’ neck and pulled him in, kissing him firmly. Remus’ arms snaked around Sirius’ waist and Sirius sighed as he felt the familiar pressure of Remus’ hands pressing into the small of his back. He felt Remus’ lips part and slid his tongue into Remus’ mouth, kissing him harder, more deeply, longing for what he’d been denied for over a decade. Remus tugged Sirius into the apartment, closing the door behind him, his lips still on Sirius’. He threads his fingers through Sirius’ hair and sighed into his mouth.
They break apart, both breathing heavily and holding each other close. Remus closes his eyes, resting his forehead against Sirius’, his hand wrapped around Sirius’ neck. Sirius put his finger through one of Remus’ soft, springy curls and Remus laughed. Sirius pulled back and opened his eyes to see Remus’ smile.
“You’re beautiful,” he said to Remus quietly. Remus looked away and blushed, a shy smile playing on his lips. Suddenly, the clock on the wall caught Sirius’ eye.
“Shit,” he said. “I have to go soon.” Remus’ smile faded slightly.
“Where to?” he asked, wrapping his arms possessively around Sirius waist.
“I promised Harry that I’d go to dinner with him at the Weasleys,” Sirius said.
“Oh.”
“Hey,” Sirius said, looking up, “why don’t you come?”
“What?”
“Why don’t you come?”
“You can’t just invite me to somebody else’s house,” Remus said with a laugh.
“Oh come on, Molly and Arthur won’t mind,” Sirius said. “You know them, the more the merrier.”
“I don’t know, Sirius,” Remus said, uncertainly. “They didn’t invite me; I don’t want to intrude.”
“Please come,” Sirius said. “For me?” He pouted and Remus rolled his eyes. “Really, Rem, please come,” Sirius added, looking hopefully into Remus’ golden honey eyes.
“Oh alright,” Remus said with a smile. “I’m asking Molly first though.”
“Okay,” Sirius said brightly.
“You don’t think Harry will mind?” Remus asked.
“No, why would he?” Sirius asked but Remus merely shrugged. “Harry convinced me to do this, y’know,” Sirius added.
“He did?”
“Yeah,” Sirius said. “He basically told me exactly what James told me when we were at Hogwarts the first time I… you know. What would we do without the Potters, right?” Remus grinned.
“What indeed,” he said. “They’re frighteningly similar aren’t they? James and Harry?”
“Yeah,” Sirius said. “He’s like Lily as well.”
“Yeah,” Remus said. “A lot like her. They’d be so proud of him.”
“You should tell him that,” Sirius said. “I think he’d like to hear it.” Remus nodded.
“Yeah, he would.” Remus glanced at the clock. “How long do we have before we have to go?” he asked.
“Five minutes,” Sirius said.
“Five minutes?” Remus said. “I can work with that.” He smirked and leaned towards Sirius pressing their lips together. And as he does, Remus found himself feeling lucky. Here he was, alive at the end of both Wizarding Wars, holding the love of his life in his arms. He’s not young anymore, not carefree but he’s still very much in love. And Sirius loves him back. Sirius had come to tell him that he still loves Remus despite everything. And that was more than Remus had ever dared to hope for. And just for a second, he let himself consider that maybe, just maybe, he could be happy again.

PAIRING: kim sunwoo x fem reader
GENRE: fluff, humor, angst, somewhat implied relationship?, hotel del luna! au, head manager! sunwoo, hotel owner! reader
WC: 3.9k
NOTES: like one mention of blood, ghosts, heavily hotel del luna inspired
happy bday to one of my ults 🎉 lovely sunwoo 🎉ugh i can’t get enough of him 🤧so here’s a pt. 2 to this hotel del luna fic you can read here !
you don’t have to read the first part to understand but it’s recommended!-  i mean it’s hdl sunwoo,,,, just saying. (also i’m not really sure where it lies in aspect to the original so just take it how you please ^^ )
The girl groans. What happened?
She tries to recall what just occurred, but her head pounds in irritating waves of pain.
I was walking down the stairs outside..... and then I must’ve tripped and fallen?
She shrugs, getting up and cracking her suddenly sore and painful neck.
While rolling her head around to loosen it up, her eyes land on a sign. A bright, neon flashing sign that would effectively grab anyone's attention.
Huh, looks like a hotel.
There’s no explainable reason, but the girl starts walking towards the entrance.
Carefully opening the door, she peeks inside. Just from the beginning, the girl can tell it’s a magnificent and luxurious place.
Now she suddenly gets the feeling that she’s not supposed to be here. But there’s no one around, so the girl continues on, still rubbing her stiff neck.
It’s beautiful- the biggest hotel she’s ever seen. Other people pass by, and she’s extremely horrified and confused by their appearances.
What’s with all the fake blood and dirt? It all seems so real-
...It’s not Halloween today, right?
The girl explores the place, finding more and more sights to see. She turns the corner, eyes wandering around until she accidentally bumps into someone, falling down.
“Oof! I’m sorry-!”
You stare down at her, a bone-chilling glare on your face. “Who are you?”
Sunwoo follows behind you. “Hey, what's the matter?” His words and feet come to a halt when he sees you staring down at the girl.
There's a pause in which you all just stare at each other.
Until his eyes widen. “Yuna?”
Everything clicks. “Kim Sunwoo?” she gasps.
Your head whips to him. “You know her?”
Sunwoo seems so startled, his eyes never leaving her. “What are you doing here?”
The girl- or you should say, Yuna- stands up, nervously looking around. “I-I don’t know. I think I fell down the stairs and when I woke up, this place caught my attention, so I came inside. But since when did you work at hotels?”
Sunwoo fiddles with his tie, lip between his teeth. You keep your gaze on him, suddenly wanting to know more.
Sunwoo knows this girl?
Why is he acting like this?
What was their relationship with each other?
“Yeah,” he nervously chuckles. “I do-”
You cut him off with an obnoxious laugh. They both stare at you, surprised. “You two know each other?”
Sunwoo grimaces, “maybe we should go somewhere more appropriate for this.”
Once seated at your office desk, sunwoo explains everything.
“We’re childhood friends, all the way until when I went to the United States for college.”
“We haven’t seen each other in forever,” she adds.
There’s an unpleasant feeling growing inside you. You don’t know what it is- you haven’t felt it in a long time.
But what you do know is that you want her out of here. Nowhere near sunwoo.
You want sunwoo away from her stupid smile and stupid laugh, utterly despising the way the two of them get along so well and engage in a conversation so naturally.
Your eye twitches when her hand comes in contact with sunwoo’s shoulder after laughing at one of his jokes.
Sunwoo notices your brooding aura, turning to you with a knowing glance. “Is there something wrong?
“No, nothing at all, Manager Kim.” You enunciate each syllable slowly.
He frowns at the way you formerly call his name, “really? It seems like you’re kinda bothered by something.”
You wish you could kill sunwoo right now in front of her. Truly, a sight to see.  “No,” you grit, even though there’s obviously something wrong.
Yuna looks at sunwoo. “Is it me? Did I do something?”
Curse sunwoo and his stupid looks, always attracting other girls and-
“I'm not sure..  It’s not because of Yuna, right?”
His eyes bore into yours, the corners of his mouth tilted up, and you lose your patience, effectively crushing the piece of paper in your hands to bits.
“Well, she’s not even supposed to be here-”
You stop abruptly, horrified.
Oh no.
Sunwoo turns to you. “What did you just say? She’s not supposed to be here at the hotel??”
You feel a rush of heat. “What-ha, no. I didn’t-“
But sunwoo knows you better than you believed. His eyes narrow. “Miss y/l/n, I thought you were trying to be a better person.”
You scowl, wanting to object but he cuts you off.
“If she isn’t meant to be here now, then that means she needs to leave,”  he looks you directly in the eye. “Because this is the fates’ plan, isn’t it?”
Your mouth drops open, but you close it, pursing your lips.
“Fine.”
“Fine,” you say more forcefully, desperately craving your precious caviar and wanting to be anywhere but here. “This was a mistake. Her heart’s still beating. Tell her to leave quickly or else it won't be anymore.”
Yuna glances between the two of you, utterly bewildered. Sunwoo quickly turns to her. “It was nice to see you again Yuna, but I think you should leave right now.”
Her eyes widen. “Is there something wrong?”
You want to answer, “yes, you.” But instead, you just sigh.
“No. You just overstayed your leave. So get out.”
Sunwoo shoots you a look but it’s too late, you’re already (quite harshly) guiding Yuna out of the place.
Once you reach the exit -the doors to the human world for Yuna to find her consciousness and body, as well as go back to living her normal life again, Sunwoo speaks up.
“It was really nice to talk to you after a long time, Yuna. No offense, but I really hope I don’t have to see you again here.”
You just barely hold back a scoff. Yuna cocks her head but doesn’t comment on it.
Once she steps over the threshold, she suddenly turns back to Sunwoo, her eyes lit up, “wait sunwoo, we should meet up some-“
You slam the door in her face.
You try not to show it, but you’re fuming inside. And Sunwoo can definitely tell.
What’s so good about her?
It was really nice to talk to you again?
Tch. Who says that?
That girl’s not even that pretty.
You shouldn’t have said anything about it not being her time here and just let the girl leave to the afterwor-
“Miss y/l/n-!”
You blink. “What?”
You want to slap that smug grin off Sunwoo’s face. “I’ve been calling your name for the past five minutes, but you seem to be really distracted and upset even.”
You turn around, chin high. “No. I don’t know what you mean.”
“Well, I wanted to thank you.”
You look at him warily. “For what?”
“For doing the right thing.”
You scoff, continuing past him with your dress swishing behind you and heels clicking harshly against the ground.
Sunwoo watches you go with a smirk. He wishes to keep this version of you in his pocket forever.
It doesn’t get any better the next day.
When Sunwoo comes in, you simply glance over him like he’s a ghost.
He’s annoyed of course, but at the same time amused and even endeared. Sunwoo likes seeing you jealous, even if you’d never admit it.
“Miss y/l/n, one of the guests requested a specific meeting with you. He wants-“
“No,” you say coldly, fiddling with your vast collection of earrings.
“But he-“
“Does he have money or any sort of offering?” You don’t look up even once from your array of sparkling beauties, and it frustrates Sunwoo greatly.
“Miss y/l/n.”
You finally stop moving at the stern tone of his voice.
“You’ve been alive for how many years? I expected you to be a little more professional and put your personal feelings aside at work.”
You splutter. “Personal feelings?!?”
You raise your pen at him threateningly, a fiery glint in your eyes. If it was anyone else, it wouldn’t seem scary. But it was you after all.
“You know I don’t actually like her like that.”
That catches you off guard, making you falter with the pen still in your hand.
“Someone else caught my interest.”
You furrow your eyebrows. Huh? Sunwoo likes someone? He has the time outside of his job to date?
You suddenly blurt out, “Who?”
He smiles softly. “Someone who’s really greedy and needs a lot of attention. But it’s okay. I’m willing to give it to her.”
Your chest tightens.
Stubbornly, you tilt your head to the side, avoiding his strong gaze for the nth time while the room suddenly feels a bit hot to you.
“Manager Kim, you’re still here?” The head maid’s voice catches your attention. She has a frown etched on her face, obviously unpleased.
Sunwoo shifts. “Oh, I totally forgot about the time. It’s fine. I can stay longer if needed.”
She hits him softly. “Don’t be ridiculous, you should get some sleep for tomorrow. You don’t want to be tired and not have the energy to celebrate on your birthday, do you?”
You tense, looking at sunwoo curiously. “Birthday?”
He shrugs. “Yeah, my birthday is tomorrow. It’s not a big deal, I don’t really celebrate it,” he turns to the head maid again. “But since you insisted, I will go home and get some rest.”
He bids his goodbyes, softly giving you one last, ‘goodnight’, before turning to leave.
Suddenly, a wave of guilt washes over from your childish actions, and you fall silent.
You didn’t know it was his birthday tomorrow.
You watch Sunwoo leave with an unreadable expression as the head maid looks at you knowingly.
Sunwoo gets home exhausted, more than he realized.
To be honest, he completely forgot it was his birthday tomorrow. Since it was only his grandparents caring for him at a young age and his grandfather was at work most of the time, sunwoo didn’t really celebrate his birthday often.
It wasn’t a big deal, he didn’t care. His birthday was just like any other day.
When the head maid asked if the staff should prepare anything for him tomorrow, he politely declined. It felt wrong to celebrate when you were still ‘mad’ at him -not that he should've cared...
Sunwoo shakes his head, clearing it from all thoughts of work and you. Yawning, he climbs into bed and falls into a deep slumber in record time.
. . .
riiiiiiinnnng~
Sunwoo groans.
riiiiiiinnnng~
He rolls over, eyes barely peeking open. Who is calling at this ungodly hour?
He clumsily reaches his phone, checking the time.
2:57 am.
You’re joking, right?
“Hello?” He cringes at the sound of his deep and raspy slumber voice.
“Sunwoo.”
He’s immediately awake now at the sound of your voice.
It’s quite faint and soft.
What’s worse and even more worrying is that it's deadly calm.
“Y/n? What is it?”
“....can you come here? Now?”
He glances at the phone screen, confused until he sees a notification from you - ‘a location was shared with you’
Sunwoo’s too tired to think at this moment. He simply hangs up with an 'ok' and gets up to change.
He doesn’t really pay attention to the address, grabbing some random clothes- it’s 3am and sunwoo doesn’t feel like putting on his whole professional suit- before heading out.
It’s a strangely warm spring night, the bright stars twinkling in the sky catch his attention as he makes his way down the sidewalk.
He has no clue where he's going, but he follows the directions to you nonetheless.
Sunwoo doesn’t know what to say.
Is he surprised?
Honestly, not really.
Is he confused?
Yes. Very.
Why would you invite him out to a restaurant in the early hours of the morning?
It’s obviously closed- the windows dark- but knowing you, you probably unlocked the doors and got the food you wanted anyways.
Sunwoo doesn’t know when the food ‘escapades’ started, but all he did know was that you were obsessed with watching that one eating show and liked to force sunwoo along with you to visit famous featured restaurants.
When no one else was there, of course.
So this isn’t that much of a surprise. That’s why sunwoo simply reaches for the handle- unlocked as expected- and heads inside.
Well, he was wrong. He was expecting the food.
But he wasn’t expecting it to be all of his favorites. With a cake topped off with illuminating candles in the dark place.
And you in the middle of it all, obviously bored and waiting for him. (Sunwoo wouldn’t dare say this out loud, but he thought you looked ethereal sitting at the table, starlight shining down and glowing around you. In short- he ironically thought you looked like an angel.)
“What is this?”
You sit up, groaning. “Finally. I was about to start eating without you.”
He looks at everything that you must’ve set up.
“Did.... did you do all of this?”
You shift uncomfortably from his intense gaze.
“Yes. Why?” Your voice turns into your normal bossy and annoyed tone. “You think I wouldn’t be capable enough to do this?”
He shakes his head. “No, I didn’t say that. I’m just shocked. After all, it's so early in the morning.”
You inhale, recalling the events that led up to this. After sunwoo left for the night, you had a horrible feeling in your gut for some reason. No -there’s no way you could be feeling guilty? You chided yourself, saying you were just being stupid, and went to bed.
But his nonchalant face kept popping up in your mind, leading you further and further from sleep, and you had no choice but to furiously get out of your extremely comfortable, plush bed and stomp out to find a suitable restaurant.
And here you were now. The two of you alone in a closed restaurant with a cornucopia of food at 3 in the morning.
“Did you plan this with the head maid? Is that why you made me go home early and get some rest?”
“No,” you scoff. He stares at you for a solid minute before you glare indignantly at him back. “It wasn’t planned!”
You look down at your perfectly manicured nails, suddenly avoiding eye contact. “I felt bad that I didn’t know it was your birthday and made you work overtime....” you gruffly respond.
Sunwoo looks around the restaurant.
It’s not the best, he notes. The banner is crooked, and the confetti everywhere is quite honestly getting on his nerves already, but he still feels warm. His heart grows for you and only you once again.
“Thank you, y/n.” His use of your actual name makes your insides flutter - it’s the way you know he’s truly being sincere.
“I really appreciate everything you did for me.”
His voice sounds so touched and grateful -you hate it. Because it makes your heart (if you even still had one at this point) feel weird too.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” you grumble.
He stifles a laugh.
“Are you just gonna stand there, or are we gonna eat all the food I prepared for you?”
He blinks. “Right.”
Sitting next to you at one of the tables, sunwoo examines the pretty cake you got.
“How are the candles not going out?”
You roll your eyes, getting your phone out to record a video. “They’re fake, I created them. Hurry and blow it out,” you command.
You quickly add, “I’m not singing the dumb song either.”
You press the record button, corners of your mouth curving upward when Sunwoo closes his eyes tightly to make a wish before blowing. The candles effectively go out with a whoosh, leaving you two in the dark.
You end the video, saving it to keep.
Sunwoo pouts, “we’re not gonna take any photos together?”
You raise an eyebrow. “Why?”
If anything, his pout increases. “It’s my birthday.....”
You let out a long sigh before taking your phone out again and opening the camera. Scooting your chair over to his, you lift the camera to capture the two of you.
Posing, you’re about click the button when Sunwoo suddenly jerks your chair much closer to his, causing you to start and look at him in surprise.
He grins. “What are you waiting for? Are you gonna take the photo?”
You grumble, nervously swallowing once you realize how close the two of you are through the camera screen.
You get several photos, most of them bad, but you keep them for memories anyways. Sunwoo wants to laugh at how pretty and innocent you seem in the photos compared to real life.
You’re about to put your phone away, but Sunwoo begs for one more.
Rolling your eyes, you put up with him -just for today.
Raising the camera, you smile cutely one last time, about to click the shutter button, when you feel a pair of arms wrap around you, pulling you back until your back meets a warm chest.
You freeze, face turning to shock as you hear the button sound. After the photo’s taken, Sunwoo casually drops the hug, completely unaffected as he goes back to the food.
You stay still, the ghost of his warmth around you still lingering.
“Miss y/l/n, are you gonna eat?”
“H-huh?” You quickly spin around to see sunwoo digging into the food already. You fight back a smile at the sight.
While you two eat, sunwoo stares at you.
“What?” You wipe your face in case there’s food or something on it.
He chews. “Nothing. I’m still surprised you did something for my birthday after I said not to.”
You sit up straighter, your voice suddenly serious.
“Your life should be celebrated. Everyone’s life should be celebrated. It’s a precious gift to still be living and breathing on this earth. So enjoy it while you can,” you state.
Sunwoo swallows, looking down with a small smile. “Yeah, you’re right.”
A peaceful silence occurs for a couple minutes.
“Hey,” sunwoo speaks up, “I think this is the first birthday I’ve had while working for you.”
You slowly nod.
And it could be the last.
You don’t say it out loud, but the thought burns deep within. Not wanting to think such somber things on sunwoo's birthday, you clear your throat, taking your phone out to look at the photos.
The last one makes your breath hitch.
Sunwoo’s arms are wrapped tightly around you, his face happy and content and eyes shining prettily. Your eyes are wide, lips parted in a small ‘o’.
Quickly, you turn off your phone, watching sunwoo finish his food.
“Are you done?”
He nods, a content sight leaving his lips.
“Finally, I thought I was gonna fall asleep,” you snort. You pull a medium-sized bag out of nowhere, it’s quite plain and simple.
“Huh? What is that?”
You try to seem neutral. “It’s just something I saw that looked pretty.”
Sunwoo's eyebrows raise.
“But it didn’t match the fancy aesthetic of my room, so you can have it,” you add hastily.
He coughs.
Roughly, you shove hand him the bag.
Sunwoo gently takes out the wrapping paper, examining the ‘present’ you got him.
It’s some weird contraption. That’s the first thing he thinks of. As he examines it more closely, he realizes there are stars and constellations decorating it.
“....what is this?”
You try to act nonchalant. “It’s just a decoration you can hang from your ceiling. And I got it charmed to protect you from angry spirits and whatever. I don’t know.”
Sunwoo’s eyes widen.
You got this as a present for him?
When he doesn’t respond, you sigh and reach out to take it back.
“If you don’t like it, I’ll just give it to someone else, sheesh.”
“No!” Sunwoo practically shouts, protectively shielding it from your grasp.
You gape at him.
He blushes. “I-I like it a lot.”
You clear your throat, trying to shrug it off, but sunwoo leans in.
You freeze.
Is he gonna-?
Instinctively, your eyes squeeze shut. You wait. And then a warm feeling lands on your cheek for a couple of seconds before leaving.
After some time, you deem it safe to open your eyes. And come in contact with sunwoo staring back at you, an indescribable emotion deep in his eyes.
You can’t find it in yourself to look away for some reason.
Then a sudden noise outside- probably a stupid owl- startles the two of you.
You start laughing nervously. “Ha, I think we should clean up now, haha.”
He chuckles. “But I want to do that again.” You almost drop your phone, spluttering. “Kim Sunwoo!”
He rolls his eyes. “How many times do I have to tell you, it’s Manager Kim.”
“W-whatever... just help me clean up!”
After you finish cleaning, sunwoo requests for you to tell him a story.
So you close your eyes and think back to when his grandfather worked for you. And start talking of one of the crazy episodes that constantly occurred back then. Somewhere in the middle of it, you come back to your senses and find sunwoo asleep, cheek against the table.
You stare at him with a fond look.
“Come on,” you whisper, picking him up easily. “Let’s go home.”
You eventually get him into his bed, quietly as to not disturb his sleeping roommate.
Sunwoo must’ve woken up because he calls your name. You look down at him, sleepily blinking back at you. “Will you hang up my present for me?”
You scoff, but already are you reaching for the gift.
“Where do you want it?” You ask, but sunwoo’s already passed out again.
Rolling your eyes, you hang it right above him from the ceiling, near his bed.
For a minute, all you can do is admire sunwoo, the stars shining above and creating a beautiful glow around him. He looks so peaceful when sleeping, like the little kid he once was. And honestly still kind of is.
You sit down next to him on the bed, gently brushing his bangs out of his eyes.
I know we don’t speak our feelings to each other often, but seeing you happy is enough for me.
You smile softly at his sleepy pout. “Happy birthday, sunwoo,” you whisper. But before you can leave, a hand swiftly wraps around your wrist. You look down.
“Stay the night. It’s too late for you to be out. Stay next to me,” he mumbles.
You know that he knows you’re well able to take care of yourself at any time, but still, you can’t find it in yourself to say no.
You slowly make your way over, tucking yourself under the covers, and sunwoo automatically wraps his arms around you.
It’s warm. He’s warm.
You probably shouldn’t be doing this.
But it’s his birthday.
What if his roommate comes in and sees?
Although all those thoughts run through your mind, you find yourself drifting off under the stars, not caring. Underneath the luminescent gift you gave him that hangs from the ceiling, twinkling brightly over the two of you.
Just for tonight.
Bonus ㅠㅠ:
“Aren’t the stars so pretty tonight?” you remark.
Sunwoo stares at you, never looking away. “Yeah.”
“A shame that the moon is hiding this peaceful night.”
“And what about the sun?” he jokes.
Your eyes flick towards him.
The sun is right here next to me, you internally answer.
My sun that always shines so brightly over me is you, Kim Sunwoo.

Hi! Can I request a part 2 to your Valkyrae imagine?
Tumblr media
GIF isn’t mine. Credits to the owner!
Title: Idol’s Inspiration Part 2
Pairing: Valkyrae || Rae x Fem! Reader
Summary: A collection of moments involving an idol and a streamer
Warnings: Cursing?. Just pure fluffiness
Word Count: 3,043 words
I had way too much ideas on this one so this is going to be a collection of said ideas. Have fun!
Actually, I saw someone on my dashboard asking for Rae x Reader imagines, so hi to that person!
You can read Part 1 Here
➽───────────────❥
You took a couple of days before you gathered the courage to actually message Rae, you also spent those couple of days staring at the paper containing her number and your phone, which also has her number punched in.
“Okay. I just have to press send...” Your fingers hovered over the icon as you chewed your lips in nervousness.
“Oh damn it.” Luna groaned before snatching your phone and pressing send, barely giving you time to retaliate
“Hey!” You complained, staring at her in disbelief
“You were taking too long” She shrugged, sipping on her milkshake as she tossed your phone back to you
You only had time to roll your eyes before phone vibrated.
‘About time you texted me, I was beginning to think you forgot. Oh and totally, I could make a lobby for you rn’
‘Sounds good! I’m free this Friday!’
You smiled, well, looks like you’re playing with your favorite streamer group this Friday then.
-
Your bandmate Jace actually owns a gaming pc, to which you borrowed to play among us, which ended you up here, in his room, on a private discord call with Rae, her helping you set up for tomorrow.
“So is this your first time, ya know? Playing among us?” Rae asks as the download bar for the proximity chat
“Oh no. Uhm, My bandmates and I play all the time, sometimes on public lobbies and sometimes we drag our crew to play, especially while on the tour bus. Plus, I watch you scream and play all the time so you don’t have to worry about me Rachel” You explain, smiling softly at the memories, trying to ignore the feeling of content and satisfaction at how easy her name rolled out of your tongue
“That’s cool.” She replies, about to say something when a bark interrupts her
“Mika! Hi! Hi baby~” You hear her coo, your smile widening
“Raeeee! Tell Mika I said hi!” You chuckled
“Y/N says hi!” She says, running her hand through Mika’s fur, the white furball now sitting in her lap
“Awee~ You’re both so cute~” You coo, laughing when Rae hid herself behind Mika
You spent the night talking about random stuff, setting up for the game and running a test run with her, but then laughing when you realized you can’t play with just the both of you, ultimately deciding to start early tomorrow for a test run. Her also adding you to their discord before sleeping.
-
“My new favorite seafood!” You furrowed your brows when you heard Sykkuno’s voice fill your ears when you joined the discord call
“Shrimp.” Brooke giggled
“OOOOOHHH. So that’s why they were saying shrimp for Rae. I was like, what does that even mean?” Rae’s sentence caught you off guard, especially since you just tweeted that exact same phrase before logging in.
“shit.” You mumbled, having dropped the lid of the water jug you were drinking from.
“Y/N! HI HI HI HI” Rae greeted
“Hello.” You replied, a little overwhelmed at being the center of attention.
“Pfft- My chat is saying shrimp for Y/N now” Sykkuno announces
“Mine too” Brooke agrees, soon followed by the rest of the lobby, making you laugh
“I’m Sorry, Sorry! Actually, I may know why that’s happening. Fun fact! I actually gave people permission to shrimp for me on an interview, since I found it funny, especially since I’m also shrimping for someone.” You explained
“Oh yeah! I saw that clip.” Rae mumbles, trying to decide which color she should be in and what hat she should wear
“I wonder who Y/N is simping for. Hmmmm. Who could that be? Hmmmm.” Toast teases
“Yeaaah. I wonder who that could be.” Poki replies, her teasing tone much more evident
-
It had been a couple weeks now since you first played with Rae and her friends, her friends who are now also your friends. You were pressured to stream on YouTube by your fans and also Rae, who you now have late night talks with.
“Y/N! Hiiiiii!” You hear Rae as you rounded, soon followed my Corpse’s voice
“Choke me-” Corpse started
“LIKE U HEYT MEH BAT U LAB MEH-” Rae continued, mispronouncing words that made you chuckle
“Lowkey wanna date me when you hmm me.” You sang, connecting the wires
“NEW SONG! NEW SONG! Corpse and Coldify! C and C!” Rae exclaimed, her little red bean circling you and Corpse
“Oh yeah, definitely, Corpse? You up to it?” You ask, doing a little wiggle to show your excitement
“Hell yeah! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA” he does that deep voice thing that made you flinch
-
“I can’t stand it. I can’t stand the sound of my voice.” Rae exclaims, talking to chat you assume.
You rolled your eyes, finding Rae’s voice beautiful. You jumped out of the vent, knowing that no one was around, making her scream
“Hi! Just wanted to pop in and let you know that your voice is actually beautiful and I would love to sing with you some time. That’s all, I’ll go back to killing now, Oh! you might want to check vitals, love.” You say, hopping back into the vent, laughing silently. Then abruptly stopping when you realized you called Rae “love”, glancing at the chat, who were now spamming your ship name with Rae
Seeing Lily alone, humming a tune, you quickly popped out of the vent, sliced him in half before a meeting was called, Ludwig finding Toast’s body.
“Before we start. I just want to say, to the person who called me “love”... You don’t get to call me that then run away!” She exclaims
“Sorry! I got embarrassed!” You pouted. You wiggled your eyebrows at your chat, smirking slightly
“Uh-huh. Oops, Sorry Lud. Carry On” Rae says, letting Lud explain his “Different Universe” theories about how Toast died.
-
“Heeeey...” Rae trailed out, her cornering you in storage
“Hiiii?” You smiled nervously. You don’t know what was happening in her mind
“Soooo... Babuska?” You immediately got what she was implying, nodding frantically, before realizing she couldn’t see you
“Yeah. Yeah let’s do this!” You both walked out, Rae on the lead while your white character trails after her
“OH LOOK! There’s Corpse! And Sykkuno! Hiiiiiii!” She greeted cheerily, somehow you could see the evil smile on her face
“oh- Oh. Hi Rae! We’re just shooting some space rocks here!” Sykkuno says, her green character circling Rae
“I see. I see... Babushka.” Rae states, you wait a couple of seconds letting Sykkuno and Corpse panic first, before slicing Corpse in half.
“OH JESUS! You killed Corpse! You killed him! You really kil-” He was cut off when Ash creeped behind him, biting his head off
“Thanks Ash.” You say, laughing as Rae gasped and laughed as well
-
“Rae~ Oh Rae~” You chuckled, looking for the brunette
“What?!” She exclaimed from her spot behind the seismic reactors
“Oh uhm, are you streaming right now?” You asked her, preparing yourself for what you are about to say.
“Uh yes? Duh?”
“Ohkay... well, hypothetically, If I were to ask you out, is it okay if I do it on stream orrr?”
“Well, hypothetically, I would be fine with it either way, yes.”
“Oh okay!” You clear your throat
“Ms. Valkyrae, The Valkyrae, Rae, would you please grace me with your presence on this coming friday night and allow me to buy you dinner, m’lady?” You say in your best posh voice
“...Yes” She says in a small voice
“Great! I’ll pick you up at 7!” You say
“Great! Okay”
“Great. I’ll kill you now.” you say
“Wait what?!” she exclaims, her scream perfectly cut when the victory sign flashes on your screen.
“THE AUDACITY! HOW DARE YOU! I- I CAN’T EVEN” She rages
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!” You apologized, laughing your ass off
-
“I’m on Y/N Protection Services! She’s been dying a lot lately!” Rae exclaims, you rolling your eyes at her dramatics, both of you were impostors.
“Well, thank you m’lady” You replied, faking gas
“Ooooooh! I have speci, come.” Rae says, her red character slicing toast nonchalantly when you passed him doing telescope
“Uhm-”
“Shh.”
And suddenly, when the decontamination doors open, Poki emerged from it, panicking you killed her.
“Oh shit! No! Wait! I’m sorry! Pokiii!” You whined, following Rae into decontam
Finding Janet in Speci, You go to say hi, only to be interrupted by the body being found.
“OH NO! TOAST! He was just with me! OH JESUS!” Sykkuno exclaims, making you bite your lip to avoid laughing
“Where’s the body?” Jack asks
“Medbay, by the telescope” Brooke answers
“It has to be Y/N! She’s the only one who could’ve killed Toast!” Janet accused
“Hey! What?! Why me?!” you complained,
“You came from upper decontam! Toast’s body is in medbay, That’s sus.” Janet says, you were about to defend yourself when Rae chimed in
“There is a possibility that Y/N is the impostor.” She states
“Wha?! RAE?! You- You were with me in speci!”
“What? No I wasn’t! You’re lying! I lost you when I was doing gas! I was looking for you everywhere!” Rae says making you look at chat with a pout
“I didn’t see her there either...” Janet backed her up
“Wha?! Guys?! Come on, let’s skip! There’s barely enough evidence!” You desperately say, trying to save yourself
In the end, 7 heads voted for you.
“...Y/N will remember this.” You state before being thrown off the ship, welcomed by Poki and Toast’s laughter
“Yeah. Yeah. Hmmpf.” you huffed at Poki and Toast
“My girlfriend just betrayed me. Rae betrayed me chat, she just, she pushed me off the plank. She just, watched as I burned in the lava. She kicks me out of her bed for Mika, and now she betrays me, then pushes me off the plank. Ohhh the pain” you dramatically say as you followed Rae, her returning to specimen
“Listen, chat, Y/N if you’re listening... That was payback for that one time you killed me behind reactor right after you asked me on a date! Okay!” You rolled your eyes and looked at your camera with an annoyed look in your face
But your smile slowly returns as Rae goes on a mass massacre making you both win without meetings, making you bounce in your seat, clapping
“Good Job Rae! That was so good! You successfully scared me, I might not sleep in your room now.” You teased her, making her gasp
-
“Here we go. Here we go. Here we go. Hello everyone and welcome to the streeaam! Part 2. We are starting the playthrough of little nightmares 2- Hold on, Y/N’s calling.”
“Love?” Your voice rings out through Rae’s phone
“Hiii Baby! You’re on speaker” Rae states while looking at the game settings
“Oh. Well Hi chat! Anyways, Mcdonalds? I’m 5 minutes away, don’t start little nightmares yet, come on.” You whined
“Oh you big baby, I wasn’t starting without you.” Rae laughs
“Liar, I was watching your stream.” You deadpanned
“Pshh. Pshh! But yeah, Mcdonald’s fine. And hurry up! I wanna play!”
“Okay, okay sheesh, I’ll be there with your chimkin nuggies”
-
“Baby?” You knocked on her door, even after all the months that you have been together, you always knocked on her door before entering, incase she was doing something.
“Come in love! Perfect timing.” You open the door to see your girlfriend playing with Mika, Little Nightmares 2 plastered on the screen. You approached her and kissed her forehead
“Hi Babe. Hi chat! How are you guys doing? Hold on, let me set this down.” You say, arranging the food on Rae’s desk, careful not to spill anything
“Are we ready? Baby, grab your chair. Are we ready? Are we ready? I’m so excited!” The excitement in her eyes is making you smile
“Oh she’s excited alright, she wouldn’t shut up about it chat. Trust me” You chuckled.
“Will there be a lot of screaming? Rae?” You read chat
“Uhm. Hopefully not, I don’t know dude. Can’t control my screams.”
-
“A Shoe!” Rae gasps
“Baby, there’s literally hanging kids dangling in a net and the first thing you notice is the shoe?” You looked at her in disbelief
“Oh. What happened to you guys? Stinkyy. Oooooh. Physics!” You bit your lip and shook your head at your girlfriend’s antics
“Y/N, I feel comfort when I hold this shoe.”
“Ouch. Are you saying I’m not comforting you? Rude.”
“Stop trolling!” She says, turning to you as you held up a fry
She raises her eyebrows before biting the whole fry, along with your finger.
“Ouch! Damn it Rae! You’re like a chihuahua”
“Owa Owa.”
-
“I’m sorry. OUWGHH?! OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD, PALAMPARAMPARAMPARAMPALAMPRAMPRAMPRAM! SHE’S COMING!”
“RAE! RUN! RAE! RAE! RAE! HOOOOLY SHIT! RAE! RAE! RACHEL RUN! RACHEL! RUUUN!” You panic, gripping her thigh as the teacher neck elongated, following your little character into the vents
“SHE DOESN’T CARE! SHE DOESN’T CARE! PLEASE?!”
A moment of silence pass the both of you as the character Rae’s controlling gets to safety. Rae slowly turns to meet your eyes, and bursts out laughing.
“You should’ve seen your face!” You laugh at her
“OH OKAY? Like you weren’t screaming for me to run.” She says then proceeds to repeat what you said while in a panic, making you laugh harder
“Sorry for screaming, it’s just really gross and unexpected.” She says sheepishly to her chat, which was now spamming ‘HAHAHA’ and ‘Damn how long is that neck’
-
“So, this question is directed to Ms. Y/N.” The interviewer moves his body to face you.
“Yes?” You smiled, guessing that this must be about you and Rae
“How are you feeling about your pictures trending on Twitter worldwide?” he asks, a smile on his face as the pictures flashed on the large screen behind you
“Ahm, it’s really great. A lot of hard work was put into that photoshoot, mostly because my girlfriend, Rae refused to put on the dress and was attached to the suit she’s wearing right there. God, she looks so beautiful. Uhm, but anyways, it took a lot of effort to get her out of that suit. ” You grinned
“Ahh. I recognize that look, Makes me remember about my wife and I. You’re so smitten. Can I just say that I ship you guys so hard.” The interviewer says
“Ah- Thank you. Hehe.” You say, embarrassed but proud
“While were on this topic of trending pictures, Can you guys explain whatever these pictures are? I’m pretty sure your fans already know what these are. But an explanation would be nice” The interviewer now addressed your whole group
“Well, considering that Y/N is dating Rae, Luna is dating Sykkuno and Jace is dating Imane, or Poki,  Okay, so there’s this AU that’s around their community where they are mafia’s and we’re all members now. We all joked about being apart of their mafia, to which they agreed. So now Rae and Y/N are now the assassin duo, Poki and Jace are their supervisors and Luna, Sykkuno and Corpse are the deadly trio” Sebastian explains
“Their community is so creative I swear. And combined with our fandom, the fanarts and fanfictions are the best.” Luna says, a smile present on her face
“And yes, we all do read fanfiction, in multiple platforms.” You laughed, the live audience gasping in surprise
“None of you are safe.” Jace says in a playful intimidating voice
-
“Okay, I’m gonna get off. Thank you for watching. I’ll see you guys later, thanks for watching, I hope you guys enjoyed the stream. Uhmm. Appreciate you guys. Byeee!” you hear Rae end her stream from your spot in her bed.
“Hunter x Hunter? or AOT?” you ask her as you put your phone in silent and set it aside, opening your arms for her.
She crawls into your side, cuddling you while groaning lightly.
“Do you wanna take a bath first? Or do you wanna eat dinner? Maybe take a nap first? You’ve been streaming for 13 hours baby, your eyes are probably tired now.” You say, running your free hand through her hair
“Naps and cuddles please.” she mumbles, her head buried in the crook of your neck
“Okay baby, I’ll just put AOT on, oh wait. Hmm, Jujutsu Kaisen sounds great right now. No, wait even better, Ouran Highschool Host Club.” You go to turn your head to ask Rae, but you see her asleep.
You chuckle quietly, knowing Rae, she can overwork herself, sit on a chair for 13 hours, playing various video games, while you really can’t see yourself play videogames for 13 hours straight, you admire that she has the patience and energy to do that.
Smiling, you lower the volume of the Anime that you’re watching, slowly pull the blankets up as Rae shifts closer to you, clinging like a koala. Mika jumps up and settles in between the two of you, Your smile widens at the feel of things, the calmness, the silence, the tranquility and the sense of home, something that only Rae can provide. Something that you have been looking for ever since your career took off. The constant trips to the studio, the paparazzi, the world tours, the concerts, the interviews, everything, everything was worth it when you know you’re coming home to her.
You didn’t even know how you got to where you are now, cuddled into Rae, the comfort streamer you never thought you would meet, even when you mostly stayed where she stayed... Dating her was a dream, you didn’t believe it at first, she quickly proved that dream theory wrong when she kissed you, under the rain. As cliché as it seems, that was the day you both silently agreed to never let go of each other and take care of each other even if the other is half way across the world.
Even if dating her means also dating her room mates and her chat...
You would never trade it for anything.
Even if you knew she would scream her ears off once she knows that you have a whole album that’s inspired and dedicated to her.

Come be my teacher pt 2
Aish we're back
Link to part 1
Jung Hoseok nearly died to actually make publishable Yoongi's book
But eventually he made it
He hoped the day at the luna park was enough for Jungkook to be forgiven after spending nearly every afternoon with Namjoon and his kid brother
Mostly, he hoped Namjoon could forgive him to have to deal with both his child and his own kid brother
When he mentioned it, Namjoon has a variety of emotions.
Surprise, then recognition. Eventually softness.
"they have been good, all things considered." He laughs a little "Just warning you, Jungkook took a passion for Just Dance"
Well, Hoseok considers when he watches his son weirdly dancing in front of the television, there are worst things that could happen
Also, now that he has a life back, he can discard Min Yoongi in his man cave or whatever he likes to call his attic and go back to his routine
Which means, pick up and drive is kid to school
And see again the cute teacher
Not that he cares
But you know
He does
That day Kim Taehyung was wearing a dark green vest and a white shirt and looked as an absolute old man
His housemate confirmed it and if Kim Seokjin tells you you look bad, it's true
The thing is, Taehyung didn't want to look hot, he just wanted to look comfy and cozy to his kids
When he steps outside to collect the kids, he regretted every choice made that morning
Because there it was. In all his elegant glory. Jung Hoseok.
The two exchanged a small wave and Tae nearly forgot he has something to say to him
"Come on Taehyung" he tries to say to himself "he's just another parent. Nothing to worry about. Nothing special. Not a crush, no sir"
"Hoseok-ssi" he calls him. By his name, because the first thing Jung Hoseok told him as they met is "you're taking my son most of the week, we can at least call each other by our own names"
"yah?" He was already moving towards the car, dammit.
Stumbling at bit at the beginning, Tae tells him about the little recital he proposed to the school board that year
Hoseok beamed at him
"that sounds wonderful! kids will have loads of fun"
Taehyung was positively gloating, but tried to hide it
"so this week it's going to be parents-teachers conference, so we can explain every detail"
Nobody will pry from his cold hands the knowledge that the reason why it was happening that week was that Taehyung knew as a fact that Hoseok was busy until now
And also, that nobody knew about the meeting in the first place
The thing is, a meeting was supposed to happen at some point, and Taehyung was a very considerate teacher, okay?
He needed to tell the principal about the meeting, tho
Ugh
On the other hand, Hobi was quite serene.
The wonders of a full night sleep, he guessed
Nope nothing to do with the cute teacher and the cute vest that made him look cozy and cuddly and all the stuff a grown up should not look like
It would be a lie to say that it didn't do anything to Hoseok.
But then again, Hoseok can be a good liar
His phone chimed in, showing a text from Yoongi
"so did you ask him out?"
"who?" "What do you mean who" "i mean who would I ask out" "the teacher, dumbass"
Hoseok stared at the phone for a solid five seconds
"you don't even know what day of the week it is" "And yet I know you brought the little monster to school, so you've seen him"
For someone who forgets to eat, Yoongi can be really persistent about stuff
"why" he just asks, glancing away from his computer. If anything, he knows Yoongi has little to none interest in his love life by itself
Not after he finished all the people he could set him up, anyway
Including himself
That was so weird that both kinda decided it never happened
So back to the text, Hoseok patiently waited for whatever was the real reason behind such concern
"I may or may not started planning the next book based on whatever vibe you and your lovely teacher give off"
Hoseok shrieked, but just a little
"but you know!!! Most of the time the final product have nothing to do with the beginning!!!" Yoongi continues
Six exclamation point usually mean that he's either lying or trying to convince him of something he didn't actually believe in. So lying, after all.
"and what's the plot" hoseok asks, but then "no, nvm. Don't tell me. Just. Idk. No"
Yoongi didn't reply, but then his editorial instinct won over all his better judgement
"okay, tell me the plot"
Yoongi answer arrived after less then three minutes and it was a shit ton long. He basically already planned everything and all he needed was the main characters
"and they would be me and Kim Taehyung?" Was the only answer Hoseok managed to cave
Because yeah, if life was a written book maybe they could have been the perfect romance
Even by changing some basic stuff - "don't worry you're all idols here" - and making some unrealistic concessions - "your character is the greater dancer of all times" - the way Yoongi was telling the story
A story that didn't exist
makes him want to fall in love for real
But here's the catch: they were real people, and crush on your child's teacher is problematic at best, creepy at worst
So no, he won't be pursuing that. Thank you very much
(but gave yoongi permission to work on the story nevertheless because, you know, it's his job)
And he r e a l l y is set on his mind the day of the meeting after school
Doesn't matter that he exited work early just to go home and shower
And definitely didn't have anything to do with his choice of wardrobe that saw some neat jeans he had brought but never wore and his best fitting pastel red shirt
Along with a leather jacket because what the hell he was still young after all
And if some heads turned to check him out, when he entered the classroom, well. He couldn't blame them
He sat gingerly on his child desk and waited. Mr Kim still nowhere to be seen
Talking about Kim Taehyung
His day started the night before with his housemate that, in order to forget his impossible (only according to him) crush decided to have a drink
And since it would be too sad to drink alone, he had to bring Tae down with him
Little mattered he had to work the morning after and kids were not merciful with headache
He enters the room with the parents with eyes fixed on the floor, trying to remember everything he needed to say and--- oh
Of course Jung Hoseok was there
Of course he was stunning
And of cour-- no wait he was talking to Namjoon? What was he doing here?
Oh right. Mixed classes. His kids and mr Lee were together in this project.
Having the ten years old doing the talking and the eight years old doing the dancing was his idea after all
Mr Lee smiles at him, like the old turtle he was, and sat down, waiting for him to speak
The old turtle seemed frail and sweet but he remembered being a child with him. It was all a play
Which makes him perfect for this project, he guess
So, let's convince the parents he knew what he was doing and what he was talking about despite never producing any school play
It went fairly well for the most of it
Every time he met Hoseok's stare, the other man was smiling, and that made him feel both excited and incredibly shy
But mostly gives him enough confidence at least finish the presentation of the general idea
When parents asked questions - price, time needed, how the parts would have been distributed - he tries to be as clear as he can
And hopes nobody will actually spot how much he still doesn't know
Eventually, the questions are over and the meeting is too, with a copy of the project to take home and a promise to see each other as soon as possible
Tae was putting in order his papers, trying carefully to not perceive either Hoseok nor Namjoon, but of course karma hates him
So a few of his pages fly down the desk, right in front of. Well. Of course Hoseok. Who else
It's not like he could have the worst face in the history of faces and just have his life passing by
No, he had to live his 5-hours-sleep-10-hours-work while wearing his most anonymous clothes and have something less of a Idol staring at his face
Wait
He was staring
He said something
He said absolutely something and Tae was just too far away in his head to hear anything oh my--
"everything alright?" Hoseok asked, and the question clearly triggered Namjoon attention, because he came close too
"ye-what-ye sure. I'm sorry, I must be a bit tired. Hi, Namjoon-ah"
Hoseok smiles at him, but Taehyung makes a weird face at the other man
Well, they clearly knew each other enough to drop some honorifics
Probably wasn't the first time Namjoon came instead of his parents to school stuff like this, Hoseok always knew he was a good big brother
"You did great" the young man says, to which Taehyung smiles a little. Namjoon walks over them but doesn't stop, heading towards the door
"I gotta go now, Hoseok-ssi, see you Tuesday. Tae, see you around"
"Watch your steps" both Tae and Hoseok say, which surprised them, but proved them right when Namjoon bumped into a desk
Then it was only them. And Tae knew it's gonna be awkward really soon.
"so, how you know him?" He asks. Oh, Jungkook babysitter. Makes sense
"and you?"
Taehyung makes a weird face, half displeasure.
"I'll tell you in the parking lot, I'll feel less irresponsible if I'm not at work"
Hoseok felt he has to decline and go straight home
Also stop asking about the private life of his kid's teacher and babysitter
Because that was none of his business
But he was a nice person and nice people listen to what others have to say, right?

all's well that ends well to end up with you
After a weekend conference Jo finds herself in an unfamiliar and unexpected situation with an all too familiar face from her past.
“How was the conference?”
As Link approaches Jo she can’t help but jump in surprise, he’d snuck up on her as she stood outside of one of her patients' rooms editing their chart. She had been gone for the weekend at a medical conference in New York and hadn’t seen Link since coming home.
“It was good,” Jo doesn’t look away from the computer in front of her, typing as she speaks to Link. “Robbins is pretty amazing, I’m kinda bummed I never got to work under her as an OB. But I learned a lot and I had fun.”
Her phone dings next to her and before she can grab it Link is reading the screen with interest, “Who’s Michael and why does he want to know how your morning is going?”
Jo snatches her phone up, putting it into her pocket as she closes out of the computer. She turns and begins to walk away from Link, “I met him at the conference.”
“Does he live nearby?”
“No.”
“Did you sleep with him?”
“Atticus Lincoln!”
Whipping her head around Jo isn’t shocked to see the smug grin on Link’s face. He shrugs, walking past her towards the elevators as he continues his thoughts, “I’m just saying, you’re a single mom of a three-year-old who had a whole entire weekend to herself. I assume you went to a bar, got wasted, and slept with the first eligible doctor you laid eyes on.” “Wow you really do not know me at all,” Jo follows Link into the elevator, pressing the level one button. “He’s a doctor that I happened to connect with in New York. We’ve been texting, not that it’s any of your business.”
“I’m your best friend and you’re not gonna tell me about the first man you’ve slept with since…”
“Don’t try to calculate, it’ll hurt your brain.”
While she’s always more than happy that she has her college friend back in her life Jo often finds herself annoyed at his antics, the same way she assumes siblings get tired of each other. She assumes that Link does these things to get a rise out of her but she always has the suspicion that his love for life and childlike excitement has something to do with it as well.
“Well I’m glad you had a good weekend,” the doors of the elevator slide open, and Jo and Link step out. “Still on for dinner tomorrow?”
Jo nods as she begins to walk down the hallway away from Link, “Yes and I promise I won’t burn it this week.” Link’s laugh echoes down the hallway as Jo turns the corner towards the hospital daycare. She’d flown in early in the morning and gone straight to work meaning she hadn’t seen Luna for three days. She was more than ready to scoop her daughter up and go home to watch movies on the couch.
“Mama!”
The excited voice of her daughter snaps Jo out of her thoughts, a grin overtaking her face as she runs towards her. She opens her arms just quick enough to catch Luna as she barrels forward into her chest. Even though she was just gone for the weekend Jo couldn’t help but savor the feeling of her daughter's arms wrapped around her.
“Oh my little star, I missed you so much,” Jo pulls back and presses a kiss to Luna’s forehead. “Did you have fun with Auntie Mer?”
“Yes she did, she was a perfect angel,” Jo turns her attention to Meredith who’s standing in front of her with Ellis hoisted on her hip. “I came to check on this one, she’s got a bit of a cough so sorry if Luna catches it.”
Jo shakes her head, squeezing her daughter tighter, “It’s okay, Luna is a warrior. Thank you so much again for watching her.”
“Jo you’ve watched my kids more times than I can count, don’t worry about it,” Meredith brushes off Jo’s thanks with a grin. “So did you have fun? Adult fun?”
“What is with you and Link? I go to an MFM conference and you guys think my whole weekend was a sexscapade,” Jo rolls her eyes, grabbing Luna’s backpack and hoisting the three-year-old onto her hip. “Not that it matters but I did have fun.”
Meredith shouts her goodbyes as Jo and Luna walk out of the daycare. While she’d be hesitant to admit it out loud Jo did enjoy having a weekend to herself. She’d caught up with Arizona and Callie and even had a chance to sleep in for once. The handsome man that she’d connected with was a nice bonus as well.
As if on queue Jo’s phone dings as she climbs into the driver’s seat of her Audi, a smile lighting up her face as she reads the text.
Hope you girls are having a good night, can’t stop thinking about you.
A blush spreads across her cheeks and Jo can’t help the swarm of butterflies that well up in her stomach. While one weekend wasn’t enough to judge a whole future she was excited to see where things took her.
+
True to Meredith’s word both Luna and Jo caught the cough and cold that Ellis had. While Luna had recovered quickly Jo couldn’t seem to shake the brain fog and fatigue plaguing her. She trudged through her work weeks, adopting the same bedtime as Luna and pushing off everyone’s questioning and concerned gazes until she couldn’t anymore. After three days straight of waking up exhausted, fatigued, and throwing up Jo surrendered and called Meredith to come and get Luna. If she could barely manage to get herself out of bed how was she supposed to take care of a rambunctious toddler as well? While she waited for Meredith to arrive Jo laid in bed, phone pressed to her ear.
“Hey.”
“Hey yourself. What’s up?”
“I don’t think Luna and I will be able to make it this weekend.”
“Are you guys okay? You sound terrible.”
“Gee how romantic of you, you really know how to woo a girl.”
“Jo…”
“I’m fine just… pregnant.”
There’s a long pause, an unavoidable silence encompassing both ends of the phone. Jo knows this is the last thing he was expecting, it was the last thing she was expecting, but it’s where they found themselves.
“What’d you say?” “I’m pregnant. I took a test yesterday. Well, I took seven but still.”
Jo can hear him suck in a breath on the other side and she can’t help but wish she was telling him in person, standing across from him as he launches forward and wraps his arms around her in that pleasant rush of shock and excitement.
“From New York? It’s…” “Definitely yours. There’s not really any other contenders.”
“Holy sh-”
“I know, not exactly the kind of news you were expecting,” Jo pauses, toying with a loose thread on her comforter. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize, we’ll work it out. Okay?”
“Okay.”
“I want to stay on and talk but I have surgery. I’ll talk to you later?”
“Of course. Talk to you soon.”
Jo hangs the phone up, falling back onto her pillows with a sigh. She had never pictured herself in this situation but here she was; a single mom to a toddler pregnant by a guy she had seen over one weekend who lived states away. The thought alone hurt her, but she knew that she could get through it.
“Was that mystery man from the conference?”
Jo nearly jumps at the sight of Meredith standing in the doorway of her bedroom. She looks down to Luna who’s sleeping soundly beside her before answering, “Yeah that was him.”
“You didn’t seem very happy to talk to him,” Meredith seats herself at the end of Jo’s bed, raising her eyebrows with a questioning look. “Trouble in paradise?”
“More like trouble in everyday life,” Jo rolls her eyes, looking up at Meredith. “Thanks for taking Luna, I appreciate it.”
“Of course,” Meredith pauses, eyeing Jo warily for a moment. “Are you sure you’re not contagious?”
“I told you I have food poisoning,” Jo groans as she slips further under the covers. She wasn’t in the mood for Meredith‘s questioning today. “I’ll call if I’m not okay.”
The answer placates Meredith for now and Jo wakes Luna and sends her with her friend. She stays in bed for a few more minutes before the urge to throw up overwhelms her. After she spends half an hour hunched over the toilet she finally feels good enough to crawl back into bed, falling asleep before thoughts about her unexpected pregnancy overwhelm her brain.
Despite falling asleep quickly Jo finds that she’s restless. When her stomach finally feels settled she drags herself to the kitchen, eating plain toast before jumping in the shower. By midday, Jo feels better, save for her lingering exhaustion. Meredith texts to inform her that Ellis and Luna have suckered her into a sleepover and that she’ll bring Luna home the next afternoon. With not much else to do Jo settles on the couch with a movie.
She doesn’t realize she’s fallen asleep until there’s a banging on her front door. The bright light shining through the windows alerts Jo to the fact that she slept through the night and Meredith is bringing Luna home. She jogs to the door, her apology to Meredith failing on her lips as she realizes it’s not her friend in front of her.
“Hey.”
“What are you doing here?”
“Well you called and sounded terrible and we were supposed to meet up this weekend anyway so…”
“So you hopped on the first plane to Seattle?”
“I hope that’s okay.”
”Of course! You know I missed you, I'm just shocked.”
The rest of Jo's statement is cut short as Luna barrels down the hallway and crashes into her legs. It only takes a few seconds for Jo to realize just how screwed she is before Meredith‘s voice echoes down the hallway.
“Alex?”
The blonde doesn’t wait for a response, instead wrapping her arms around the man standing in Jo's doorway. As she pulls away from Alex Meredith looks between him and Jo before letting out a gasp.
“Oh my go-“
Jo doesn’t hear the rest of Meredith's sentence as she shakes Luna off of her leg and bolts down the hall. She barely makes it to the bathroom, the little bit of popcorn and toast she managed to eat yesterday reappearing in the toilet bowl before her. She can hear Luna calling down the hall for her, Meredith distracting her quickly. As her body heaves forward again, Jo feels a warm hand on her back and another pulling her hair back.
“I’ve only been in town for an hour and I’m having a blast,” Alex chuckles as Jo swats at him blindly. “Sorry about the throwing up.”
“I blame you for this.”
“And I blame Arizona.”
When she’s done throwing up, Jo sits back and takes a long look at Alex. Although she had seen him only a few weeks earlier she can’t help but take him in all over again. The crooked smile she’s become so accustomed to still graces his face and his presence calms her nerves more than she thought it would.
“I can’t believe you flew all the way out here.”
“You were going to fly out to Kansas with Luna, I figured the least I could do right now was help you out for the weekend,” Alex brushes the hair back from Jo’s forehead and she can’t help but lean into him. “How are you doing? I mean throwing up aside obviously?”
“Tired. And I can’t remember anything,” Jo doesn’t have a better answer for Alex, her train of thought being interrupted by Luna babbling outside the door anyways. “I should get her.”
“I can get her if you want,” Alex stands quickly, extending his hand to Jo. “I mean if it's okay with you that is. I’m just trying to help out, I can take her for a bit and you can nap.”
Jo nods in thanks, bypassing Meredith in the hallway and immediately curling up in bed. She can hear Alex and Meredith whispering but can’t quite make out their words. Luna is babbling and she can tell that Alex is responding to whatever the toddler is saying to him. As Jo drifts off to sleep once again she can’t help but feel like the future might not be as dim as she had first thought.
When she wakes up a few hours later Jo is greeted by the sight of Alex coming into her room. She pats the spot next to her on the bed and curls into Alex’s side as he settles in, his arms wrapping around her shoulder. The warmth that spreads through her as he presses a kiss to her forehead is warm and comforting, something she’d craved for far too long.
“Thank you for helping with Luna, I really appreciate it.”
“It’s no problem,” there’s a momentary pause before Alex speaks again and despite not being able to see his face Jo knows he’s grinning. “We’re having a baby. Can you believe that?”
“I would say no but the constant nausea and throwing up make it hard to forget,” Jo threads her fingers through Alex’s as she rests his hand on her still flat abdomen. “We’re having a baby.”
The moment is bittersweet, the excitement of the tiny new life overshadowing the reminder that they could have already had this had Alex not left. Jo chooses to overlook that as she lets herself finally feel the excitement that’s been bubbling under the surface since she had seen the positive test two days before, “The first time I sleep with you in three years and you knock me up. I think you just missed me.”
“I did. I have every day since we said goodbye outside the airport.”
Alex’s candor makes Jo’s breath hitch. As she turns to meet his eyes she knows he’s telling the truth, but she still finds herself craving the reminder that this is real and not a dream.
“I want us to be a family, that’s what I’ve always wanted with you, Jo. I know we didn’t count on Eli and Alexis or Luna. And we definitely didn’t count on this little one,” a smile spreads across Alex’s face as he squeezes their intertwined hands still resting on her stomach. Jo can’t help the tears that well in her eyes at the small gesture. “But I can’t picture a future without all of them. Or you, I definitely don’t want a future without you, Jo. I told you in New York that leaving was my biggest mistake and I meant that. I don’t want to be a dad without you by my side, I don’t want anything if you’re not by my side. I can do it, I can live my life, but I don’t want to unless you’re there too. I love you, Jo.”
Jo can’t stop the tears that are tracking down her face. She knows she’s worrying Alex with her emotional display but her raging hormones make the task of stopping the tears near impossible. Instead, she reaches up and kisses him squarely, letting her lips linger a bit longer than she normally would. When she pulls away Alex’s eyes are still closed and he’s wearing a blissed-out expression.
“I love you too,” Jo savors the words as they fall off of her lips, not having said them in this context since the last voicemail she had left for Alex before she had read his letter. “I love you and our family so much.”
There’s nothing else for them to say, the couple enjoying the silence that surrounds them as Jo leans up to kiss Alex again and they get lost in each other. It’s an easy feat, their emotions and feelings towards each other guiding their actions as they once again fall into bed with each other. Jo knows that they have more to discuss but for now she’s content to get lost in Alex all over again.

The Interlude: A Marcus Pike Love Story
Chapter 1/7 (complete, more in masterlist, story also tagged)
Marcus Pike x fem!Reader
Word Count: 2.9k
Tags/warnings: none right now really, no use of y/n, reader’s bf is a douche (it’s not Marcus don’t worry), Marcus is a sweetheart, pining, romance, fluff
I was nervous about this, but @tintinwrites “gently nudged” me into writing this ;)
Tumblr media
Marcus Pike couldn’t believe how quickly six months went by since he moved to DC for his new job. He buried himself in his work to deal with his heartbreak over Lisbon, which actually did help. It didn’t give him the time to stay stuck inside his own head and as a result, he had never been more successful in his job. Marcus didn’t even entertain the idea of going on a date or anything, and instead chose to be married to his work.
However, the case he was currently on hit a roadblock. Marcus and his team had been after a prominent art thief for weeks now and they didn’t have a single solid lead. The guy was so elusive that they didn’t even know exactly what he looked like. Somehow, the thief always managed to avoid cameras or any other type of identifier, and it frustrated the hell out of the art theft team.
But, Agent Pike had an idea. It was risky, but he felt backed into a corner and didn’t see any other options. He got in contact with a prominent local artist and got him to agree to set up a sting at his next art show. It would be too tempting for the thief to pass up, and Marcus banked on an appearance from their slippery friend at the show.
It was mid afternoon when Marcus and his team arrived at the gallery to meet with the artist and get themselves set up.
“Johnny Luna?” Marcus asked the man who stood in the middle of the room.
He turned around from the portrait he focused on and greeted the agent with a wide smile, “Agent Pike, I assume?” he extended his hand, “Nice to meet you in person.” Johnny was the definition of tall, dark and handsome, and he had a smile that lit up a room. He had a kind face and flawless skin, and Marcus found himself envious of the man at how effortlessly charming he was.
“Nice to meet you too,” he replied cheerfully, “Thank you for letting us do this. It means a lot here.”
“Happy to help,” Johnny looked around the room, “Just promise me nothing will happen to my babies.”
“We’ll have agents posted throughout the whole gallery, and we’ll stick around all night,” Marcus took note of his team in the midst of their set up, “Nothing’s gonna happen to any of your paintings. You have my word.”
Johnny was about to answer when a figure approached behind him, “Hey Johnny,” your voice broke into the conversation, “Sorry to interrupt, but I need your opinion over here real quick,” your eyes met with Marcus’ and they lit up, “I just need him for a second, I promise,” you added with a quick wink.
Marcus nodded as he watched the two of you walk towards the large painting that was the centerpiece of the collection. As he studied you, he felt something awaken within himself that he tried so hard to keep dormant. You were so beautiful, and there was just something about you that immediately pulled him in, even after just a few words. But as much as Marcus wanted to make a move, he reminded himself about what happened last time and he forced himself to refocus on his work.
“Agent Pike,” Johnny’s voice knocked him out of his thoughts, “Let me introduce you to the best event planner in DC,” he introduced you with your name and swung an arm over your shoulders as you extended your hand to the agent.
“Call me Marcus, please,” he took the opportunity to really study your face, and he couldn’t find a single thing that he didn’t like. He hoped his gaze didn’t linger too long, but he didn’t want to look away from you.
“Marcus,” you repeated his name with a wide smile. The two of you stood in silence for a moment with your hands still connected until you felt the need to talk to him more, “So what drew you to working in the art department?”
“Big fan of art I guess,” he shrugged as he reluctantly let go of your hand and suddenly felt nervous under your soft gaze, “What drew you to event planning?”
“I saw The Wedding Planner when I was young and it sparked the party planner in me,” you replied with a giggle, “Although I have to say I’m a big fan of art and history as well. Federico Andreotti is one of my favorite artists.”
Marcus’ eyes lit up, “The Interlude is one of my absolute favorites,” he felt as if he could run in every direction at once with how much life filled his veins at how perfect you were.
The smile on your face only grew and you felt your heart pound in your chest, “I love that too! Serenade is my personal favorite,” you opened your mouth to say something more but just then, a member of your staff called your attention, “Excuse me gentlemen, duty calls.” You bit your lip before you slowly turned away from the agent and got back to your work.
The two men watched you walk away, and Marcus couldn’t help the question that left his lips, “Are you two… together?” he motioned between you and Johnny and found his heart beat faster in his chest.
“Nah man, she’s my best friend. Known each other forever,” Johnny replied right away as he faced him, “You’re more my type anyway,” he added with a wink.
Marcus chuckled at the comment, “I’m flattered, but she is more my type,” he retorted playfully.
Johnny smiled brightly at him, “I knew it!” he laughed as he clasped his shoulder, “And honestly, I know we just met and all, but I can tell already you’d be so much better for her than Tom.” He watched your whole interaction silently, and it made an idea pop into his head. Johnny knew you well enough to know when you liked someone, and he definitely knew you liked this agent.
Marcus’ face dropped, “So she’s with someone?” He couldn’t hide the disappointment in his voice.
“Yeah, a huge douchebag if you ask me,” he scoffed.
Clearly there was more to the story than that, but one of Marcus’ colleagues walked up then and wanted to go over some details with them. They spoke for a while, and the entire time Marcus snuck glances over at you across the room.
“One thing we have learned about this guy is he seems to take a liking to the ladies,” the other agent said, “The few images we have of him, he’s always talking to good-looking women at galas when he comes to scope it out.”
Agent Pike scanned the room and studied his team and he found himself wondering when so many men were on the art theft team. The only two women were much older, and he knew he couldn’t use them for the setup. Chatter filled the space around him as everyone put in their opinions and ideas; everyone knew that they couldn’t blow this opportunity to finally catch this guy.
“What if I help?” your voice chimed in from behind him.
Marcus jumped and turned around to face you and he wondered how long you had been standing there. “No, this is something for my team to handle. I can’t ask you to do something like that.”
“No offence Agent,” you quipped back, “But your team is kind of a sausage fest. Besides, how much risk can there be in the middle of a crowded art show with a whole FBI team here?” you were light with your words, but held firm in your stance.
Marcus turned back to his team, who all seemed to be in agreement. It was unconventional for sure, but no one saw a better option. With a sigh, he turned back to you and extended his hand once more, “You’re right. I guess you’re an honorary agent for tonight,” he used his humor to hide his nerves before he went through the plan with you and his team. You were to arrive early and wear a wire and a hidden camera while you talked to several men at the show to give them a better shot at identifying their thief.
Once the plan was set, you left with a nod so you could get ready for the evening. Marcus felt a similar feeling in his chest as he watched you leave. Johnny stood by the door to lock it behind you and he shot Marcus a knowing smile when he turned around and caught his eye. He looked away and pretended to be occupied, but he could still feel Johnny’s gaze on him.
The afternoon flew by and before he realized what time it was, you were back at the gallery, all dressed up. Marcus stopped in his tracks when you walked through the doors in your little black dress, your hair and makeup styled to perfection. You greeted Johnny before you looked around, and your face lit up when you met Marcus’ gaze.
“Wow,” he breathed out when you made your way over to him, “You look stunning,” Marcus complimented you as he felt himself get flustered. But he kept it together; he had to be extra focused now that you were involved in the sting here, “You ready?”
You nodded with a fierce determination in your eyes, “I’m ready, Agent Pike.”
Marcus felt a tightness in his chest at your bravery. Beautiful and brave, he hardly knew you but you were already a dream come true for him. And Marcus found that he wanted to do anything to get to know you more, not to mention he felt a fierce determination to keep you protected during the art show tonight.
He pinned a small hidden camera to your dress and handed you an earpiece so he could stay in touch with you throughout the evening as he explained his plan. You were to float around and chat up men in hopes that they could get enough to successfully identify their culprit once and for all.
“Don’t worry, I’ll always be close by,” Marcus said in a soft voice, “I’ll watch over you.”
“I know you will Marcus,” your voice was equally as soft as you gave him a look that he couldn’t decipher the meaning behind.
Marcus’ fears were soon pushed aside as the show started and people filtered in. You moved throughout the crowd, and made sure to take the time to talk to any men who lingered. The tech team went right to work and analyzed the images from each of the men you spoke to and so far came up with nothing. And true to his word, Marcus was always close by just in case something went wrong.
As you made your way around the room, you approached a tall thin man who studied the centerpiece of the collection.
“Hey there,” you broke him out of his trace as you cleared your throat. You seemed to startle him, and you couldn’t see his face until you were right next to him. Immediately you became suspicious.
The man soon recovered, however, and he grinned at you, “Well hello there,” his voice felt like ice and you wanted to back away from him. Yet, you stayed determined. “Shouldn’t you be hung on these walls too? Because you are a piece of work.”
You forced a chuckle at the terrible line, “You’re too kind, but thank you,” you shifted yourself to make sure that your hidden camera got a good look at the man, “This is real art though. You can really feel the emotion the artist put into this piece,” you of course knew just how much your friend poured into the painting before you, but you kept that to yourself.
“For you sweetness, I’d buy it in a heartbeat,” he leaned in close to you.
“You don’t even know me,” your reaction was genuine, “Besides I couldn’t ask someone to spend that much money on me. I’d feel too guilty.”
“Well maybe I won’t actually pay for it then…” he spoke under his breath. When you looked at him in surprise, he shook his head and changed the subject, “I mean…” for the first time he seemed unsure of himself, “There’s things other than money that can buy affection. If you get my drift.”
At that, you visibly cringed and took a step away, “I…. I have to go. Excuse me,” you turned around and walked away, suddenly very uncomfortable. You scanned the crowd for a familiar face and you let out a sigh of relief when you saw Marcus in the distance and you all but ran to him.
“You alright?” Marcus asked in concern as he placed a hand on your shoulder.
“I’m fine,” your voice didn’t convince him in the slightest , “He just seriously creeped me out. I did not get the warm fuzzies from him at all,” you made yourself laugh for a moment at your words, and Marcus relaxed along with you.
“You did really good tonight,” he said your name with admiration, “I think we got what we need here so you can enjoy the rest of the show now,” he paused and looked you over once more, “Thank you.”
At his words, your nerves completely disappeared as you looked into his soft, kind eyes. You let yourself exhale as you handed the hidden camera pin back to him. Once your hands connected, neither of you pulled away for a few moments, and you let your touch linger with his. You were about to close your hand around his when a voice called your name.
You jumped and turned around to find your boyfriend, Tom, walked up with a scowl on his face. He was taller than Marcus, and had a lean, muscular body, though he was not as handsome as Marcus or Johnny. “There you are. You haven’t answered your phone. I’ve been looking all over for you,” there was more annoyance than concern in his voice as he spoke to you.
“I’m sorry,” your once confident and sparkly demeanor changed as you suddenly became a shadow of yourself, “I told you I’d be here and I’d be busy.”
Tom sighed as he ran a hand through his light brown hair, “Well, are you ready to go then?”
“Yeah, just give me a few minutes?”
He nodded with a huff and gave Marcus a disapproving glance before he turned and walked away. You turned back to Marcus and tried to smile, but it didn’t reach your eyes like before, “Sorry, I gotta get going. Is there anything I need to do before I go?”
Marcus watched the whole interaction with a subtle frown on his face, but he softened his expression when you turned back around, “No, you’ve done more than enough,” he paused. He didn’t want you to go so he tried to think of a reason to keep you in front of him for even a moment longer, “Here’s my card. It’s got my cell on it so give me a call if you ever need anything,” his breath caught in his throat when your fingers touched again as you took the card from him, “I’ll probably need to follow up with you if we successfully ID our perp.”
You were about to pull out your phone when Tom shouted your name again. You let out a shaky breath before you decided not to irritate him further, “You can get my number from Johnny, just tell him I said it’s ok,” you lingered for another moment, “I’m sorry, I gotta go.” With that, you rushed to meet your boyfriend, who put his arm around you the second you were close enough. But it wasn’t a comforting or loving embrace, and he seemed to treat you more like an object or a possession than a person. And it made Marcus furious.
“I see you’ve met Tom,” Johnny’s voice came from behind Marcus, “I told you: total douchebag.”
Marcus nodded in agreement, “Is he…” he cleared his throat as he struggled to find the words, “He’s not hurting her or anything, is he?”
Johnny shook his head, “What kind of best friend do you think I am? I wouldn’t let her stay with him if he was.”
Marcus sighed as he watched the door in the futile hope that you would walk back inside. The two men stood together in silence for a moment before he remembered, “Oh, she told me I can get her number from you. I need to follow up if we get a lead,” Marcus said.
Johnny smiled widely, “I would love to give you her number.”
Meanwhile, you sat in the passenger seat of your boyfriend’s car as gazed out the window as he rambled on about himself yet again, not even bothering to ask you about your day. But then again, he rarely did. You were brought back to the present when your phone buzzed, and you looked down to a text from a number you had just saved in your phone.
It’s Agent Pike. Thanks again for your help today, the sausage fest art department appreciates it. I’ll be in touch. :)
For the first time since you got into the car, you smiled.

It’s Nothing Serious - Chapter Seven
Chapter One
Chapter Two
Chapter Three
Chapter Four
Chapter Five
Chapter Five and a Half
Chapter Six
A/N: Hey. Been a while. Here’s an update and a loose promise I’ll be better? Also thanks for all the notes, comments, and messages recently! I forget who wanted to be on the tag list, but comment and I’ll know for next time!
“It’s not serious.”
You pinch the bridge of your nose.
 “Mother.”
 “It’s not. You’re really overreacting.”
You curl your fingers into the bed of your palm and feel the bite of your nails digging into the flesh. “It’s cancer.”
 “Psssh.”
You want to throw the phone across the room. Instead, you screw your eyes shut and lean back against the wall.
“Do you have an appointment soon?”
“You know I don’t like hospitals.” She says just as you see the deadbolt to your apartment flick unlocked. Javi pushes in seconds later, looking just as tired as you feel. You give him a little wave.
“Well weigh that dislike of hospitals against your dislike of death,” you say, turning away and putting your hand on your hip. You don’t want to burden him with this, but you see his eyebrows perk up anyway. Shit. You lower your voice. “Can’t Dad sit with you? Or Luna?”
“You worry too much.” She chides.
“You don’t worry enough!” You scold into the phone. You feel a hand around your waist and turn just in time to get a kiss on your forehead. It calms you down.
Sighing, you regain your composure. “Mom? Please promise me you’re going to go back.”
“Well of course I’ll go back, Bean, but really, I don’t want you worrying about me.” Somewhere in the background, you hear a crash behind her.
 “Mom?”
“It’s just your father. He’s putting up shelves for the crystals and I think he fell. Can I call you back?”
You sigh. The only thing your mother is worse at than soothing your anxiety is calling you back.
“Yeah, sure.” You say. “But actually call?”
 “I always do.”
 “Hmm.”
 “Bye Bean, I love you.”
“I love you too,” you say before you hear the line go dead. You put the phone back on the hook and drop your head, trying it to calm yourself down. From the couch, you hear Javi perk up.
“Sounds like you had a worse day than me.”
You look up and give him a weak smile. “We’re having a lot of those, recently.”
How long are honeymoon periods supposed to last? You would have at least guessed six months. That only seems fair, given the seven months of angst and hookups that preceded finally, finally being able to admit to one another that maybe this meant a little more than you led on. You would have taken three months, even- three months of everything just being calm and quiet and nice, where the most stressful thing to happen is burning dinner because you’re too busy fucking on the counter.
You moved to the wrong fucking city.
It wasn’t even a week after your drunken exchange of I-love-yous that it began. All those bodies piling up once more, only this time the cops and their allies were giving just as good as they had got. Bodies from both sides seemed to pile up in higher stacks all around you two. Three days hadn’t passed without you having to calm down one of your students -or worse, one of your fellow teachers- over recent events. It was getting to you, too, if you were honest. Javi had warned you against going out like you once did, and as much as you hated it, you knew he was right. You thought of the friends of friends who had disappeared or died, caught in the crossfire or in the consequences of their poor decisions. The more you heard, the more you wanted to lock yourself in your apartment, hidden away from the chaos of the outside. You managed to see your friends at work but meet-ups outside had dwindled severely. Alessa found out she was pregnant and didn’t want to risk it. Lisa’s brother-in-law got caught in between two sides of a gunfight and couldn’t work any longer, so she was helping them more around the house. Maritza was the only one who still tried to go out, but it was a rare occasion you could even gather everyone up for a dinner at home.
Maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad if you could have spent all this new, anxious free time with Javi, but if anything, he had picked up your slack when it came to existing in the outside world. Since Los Pepes had entered the picture, the man worked around the clock. Sometimes you would go the whole evening without seeing him, only to be awoken to the feeling of his body falling on the bed next to yours. While he still insisted on driving you to work every morning, he had begun staying at the office later and later, sometimes not returning until 2 am. The fire and anger that once fuelled him seemed to have died out, and the poor man is running on fumes. You could see it when you both woke in the morning in the dark circles under his eyes and the uptick in cigarettes he had been smoking. You try and take care of him - bringing him coffee in bed, rubbing his shoulders when he sits up, lost in his own thoughts. He appreciates it, he tells you as much, but no matter how hard you try he’s still as weary as ever when he finally comes back to you.
You don’t want to add to that. You know that what he’s seeing at work must be leagues beyond your little pep-talks and lonely evenings, and you don’t think it’s worth mentioning even if it has started to take its toll on you. You miss your friends. You miss days at work where the kids are sunny and mischievous, instead of withdrawn and scared. Hell, you miss your boyfriend- it feels weird calling a man his age that- you’re supposed to be in loved-up bliss, but instead it seems the universe decided to throw you another curveball. You overcame the intimacy issues only to come face to face with this bullshit not days later.
And now your mom is sick.
Javi gets up from the couch and comes to stand beside you, his tired hand dropping down to take your fingers. You smile at the effort, which seems small, but you know takes so much for him these days. You reach up to wipe a stupid tear out of your eyes.
“Swear she thinks she could cure this with sage and essential oil,” you try to joke. He doesn’t say anything, only runs his thumb along your cheek bone and tilt your chin up to look at him. You try and give him a smile before another year drops down your face. Frustrated, you press your hands into your eyes and let out a groan.
“Fuck.” You say. You drop your hands and look back at him. “I’m sorry.”
“What are you sorry for, huh?” He asks.
 You shake your head.
“I don’t…I don’t know.” I’m sorry I can’t be soft and happy for you when you come home? I’m sorry that he has to spend all day on the front lines and come back to this mess? “Things have been rough lately. I don’t want to add anything to your pile.”
“It’s not my pile that’s getting added to,” he pulls you against him, pressing a kiss against your head once more. You close your eyes and let out a sigh. “You okay, hermosa?”
You nod, pulling away just enough to look him in the eyes. “They caught it early. She’s just stubborn. She’ll go, though. Her dad was an oncologist. She pretends like she doesn’t know, but…” you shake your head. “Fucking parents, huh?”
“Yeah,” he says, reaching out to push a loose curl behind your ear. “Fuckin’ parents.”
You relax into him, letting your head dip down into the dip when his neck connects to his chest. He brings his arms around you to keep you there. The two of you stand like that for a moment, two idiots swaying to the silence of the world’s chaos.
“You’re not bad,” you sigh against him, snuggling in deeper. “For an alcoholic cop.”
He chuckles. “Agent.” He combs his fingers through your hair. “You’re not bad for a teacher who lets strange men finger her in a supply closet.”
You hold a finger up. “One time.”
He catches your hand and brings your fingers up to his lips, kissing the tips. It’s enough to make you melt.
“I am sorry,” he says, placing your hand against his chest and holding it there. “About your mom.”
You sigh. “What can you do?”
“Do you need to go back?”
“I’d never hear the end of it if I did,” you pull away from him and make for the coffee table, where you had set out two drinks for Javi’s arrival before your mother had called. You pick them up and extend one to him, and he takes it gratefully, dropping onto the couch next to you. “She’s convinced I worry too much. Me, her brilliant daughter who chose to live in the middle of a war zone,” you purse your lips. “Sorry,” you say.
He shakes his head. “You’re right,” he leans forward to set his drink down on the coffee table before resting his elbows on his knees, bending forward in a pose of contemplation. Sensing the shift in the air, you sit up and run your fingers along his back.
 “Javi- I didn’t mean…”
He shakes his head again. “This thing…it’s a fucking mess. All of it.” He sighs. “Sick of seeing fucking bodies.”
You reach for something to say to comfort him, but you know there’s nothing. Instead, you scoot closer to him, resting your chin on his shoulder.
“Have you thought about it? Going back to Texas for a while?” He asks.
You shake your head. “She doesn’t want me to. And neither do I,” you reach up and lace your fingers through his, unclasping a worried hand. He turns to you, his eyes flicking up and down your face.
“You shouldn’t stay here because of me. You’d be safer.”
You blow a raspberry. “Don’t flatter yourself.” Sensing he took the joke to heart, you nudge him with your chin. “I’m here because I want to be here. With the kids. With you.”
He turns back to face forward, and you’re unsure if he’s satisfied with your answer before he speaks again.
“If anything happens to you…” he shakes his head. It forms a pit in your stomach.
You reach out and press his hand against the center of your chest. When he looks at you puzzled, you smile. “See? Still beating. Think that’s a good sign.”
He sighs, but not without a small smile on his face. Taking advantage of the moment, you reach out and take him by the chin, pulling him in for a long kiss. When you break away, his hands come up to pull your face back to his, and you can’t help but smile as he presses his lips against your mouth and begins to trail down your neck.
“Yeah,” he says, kissing the pulse point that makes you shiver. “I think it’s a good sign.”
You’re not great at taking care of yourself when you’re stressed out. Who is, really? You hope he hasn’t noticed, though, the way the bags under your eyes have darkened to match his or how much more quickly you seem to go through liquor bottles. You want to think he doesn’t notice- that he’s too focused on other things, but it’s getting harder to pretend. You try and rally your energy every time you see him. You want to be this bright spot for him in the middle of all this chaos and violence. You cook, you clean, and you go down on him like you want to live the rest of your life on your knees. You smile. You joke. You try to be pure sunshine in the bullshit he’s caught in.
But now your mom’s sick. And, fuck, you’re empty.
He must notice it. He has to see it when he comes home to you, and your house is a mess. He has to hear it when you spend the next few weeks by the phone, arguing with your family- Luna is too busy with the baby to go home, your father doesn’t want to believe it’s real, and your mother-fuck! - she keeps telling you not to worry. Not to worry! Like the few times she calls, she doesn’t tell you offhandedly how much worse she’s getting. Like you’re not trying to keep yourself from telling her how you hear gunshots every night, or how you can’t go a week without seeing a dead body. Like you’re not protecting everyone from your feelings because surely, they have it worse. You know everyone has it worse. How do you compete with cancer and being a foot soldier in the war on drugs? You’re just some teacher. You’re just some lady in over her head. Like everyone else in this country.
Maybe it was just a bad day when he came home that Wednesday. For both of you. One of your students’ siblings had died the day before, and you had spent the majority of the day trying not to cry alongside an eight-year-old. You had been trying to reach your mother for days, but the calls kept getting picked up by the answering machine and you couldn’t come up with any other way to say, “please call me back and tell me you’re okay”. When you finally came home, it was to a messy house - why are you so disappointed? it’s been a disaster for weeks- and you barely have enough energy to kick a few things out of a sort of path. You check your messages, willing there to be one overlooked recording of your mother’s voice assuring you she’s doing fine before her scheduled surgery, but the tape is woefully empty, just as it was yesterday and the day before. You pick the stupid machine up from the table and throw it to the ground.
You chain-smoked three cigarettes by your window, zoning out into the ether as night descended upon you so gradually until it was suddenly dark. You thought of your student, the one who came home to a massacred older sibling, and your stomach cramps. Before you can stop yourself, you imagine your mother in the same position they described to you that morning- spread out like a starfish on the floor, eyes wide open and dull as they stare up to the ceiling, a halo of blood around their head. Your throat itches and you light a fourth cigarette.
When you went to the refrigerator, finally, but discovered upon opening the door that you had once again forgotten to go grocery shopping. The only things that stared back at you were three-day-old pasta leftovers, some eggs, and a few beers.
“Fucking idiot,” you said to yourself.
You pulled out the carton of eggs and had begun to whisk them together when you heard the door creak open. You turned around to call out a greeting but bit your tongue when you saw his face. A deep scowl marked his otherwise handsome features, and he had already lit a cigarette before coming in.
“Hey,” he said as if he was annoyed with you. You tried to ignore it, focusing instead on the eggs in front of you. He made for the couch, stripping off his jacket as he walked.
 “Fuck!”
You turned around to see him wavering, trying to regain his balance. He reaches out and grabs the edge of the counter, but it’s stacked so high with papers that his hand slips and he’s falling back onto the floor- but not before hitting the back of his head. You run around, dropping to your knees beside him as he pulls a bloodied hand from the back of his head.
“Hang on- “you run to the sink and grab a wet towel. Jogging back to him, you reach out to nurse the area when he snatches the rag out of your hand.
“I can do it myself,” he says. “Why is your fucking answering machine on the floor?”
You feel stupid and lost for words, like a child who just got scolded. You hold your hands in front of you.
 “I want to help- “
“If you want to help, why don’t you clean the fucking apartment?” He snaps.
Your eyes widen. He’s been grumpy for weeks, surly even, but there’s an extra bit of venom in his voice tonight. Before today, maybe you would have called him on it, snatched the rag out of his hand, and told him to go fuck himself, to go to his place and bleed over his own towels.
But…fuck you’re tired. You have been hanging by a thread all day and the only thing that was keeping your eyes dry was the thought of curling up with him tonight. Maybe if one of the many, horrible things hadn’t happened today you would already be kicking his ass out, instead of standing there dumb and speechless, taking this abuse you don’t deserve.
So, you let him have the rag. You turn back and walk to the kitchen and keep making the eggs.
He has it worse. He has it worse.
You two eat dinner in silence. You can tell he’s not pleased with the meager meal, but he just grunts and shovels it into his mouth. You barely eat, picking at little bites like a bird. Instead, you think about how chemotherapy makes people lose their appetite, and wonder if your mother can eat right now. You imagine her too-long blonde hair must have begun to fall out, and for a moment you think you can feel the sickly strands tightening around your fingers. It’s all-encompassing, and you don’t hear when Javi tries to get your attention.
 “Eloise!”
You jerk your head up, your blank face meeting his. He frowns.
“I said do you want a drink,”
“Oh,” you say, softly. You shake your head. “No.”
He rolls his eyes and pushes up from the table, going to the liquor cabinet. When he pulls the doors open, his head drops, disappointed.
 “You’re out.”
“Oh?” You turn around. He turns and sends you a look.
 “Yeah.” He says
“I forgot to go to the…” you wave your hand.
“Seems like you forgot to do a lot of things,” he sighs. You frown, a bit taken aback by his annoyance. But yet again, you bite your tongue. He sighs and walks towards the table, snatching up his keys.
 “Where are you-?”
“To get some from my apartment.” He says. He swings the door open with too much power, and when it falls closed with a crack it makes your shudder.
Across the room, the phone rings.
You scramble to your feet, nearly tripping over that same answering machine that had claimed Javi. You yank the phone off the hook, shoving the phone to your ear.
“Mom?” Your voice is like a little girl’s.
“What?” The male voice says. Your shoulders deflate.
“Sorry,” you say, pressing your hand to your forehead. You look up as the door to your apartment swings open again, and Javi walks in with a storm cloud over his head, whiskey clutched in his fist. “He just walked in, hang on.” You hold the phone out to Javi. “Steve.”
He lets out a sigh and walks forward, taking the phone from your hand. In a daze, you walk towards the kitchen and begin to clean up the few dishes you dirtied, your mind zoning in and out of reality. You don’t notice you’re just standing with the water running until a hand comes from the corner of your eye and switches the tap off.
“Stop watering the pipes,” Javi says. He walks back to the table and lights a cigarette, sitting down and kicking his feet up. You turn back to look at him.
 “Everything alright?” You ask.
He scoffs. “No, it’s not fucking alright.” He takes a drag and blows a plume of smoke out. He looks up to you, his eyes darting to the glass he left by your hand. He makes to sit up.
“I’ll get it,” you say, and you pick it up, walking over towards him. You’re just about to hand it to him when your ankle gives, and you drop the glass, spilling his drink over his pants.
“Goddammit!” He yelps. He looks up at you - and you know it’s not you, you know he’s had a bad day, you know there’s so much on his plate- but the snarl he has feels like a punch to the stomach.
“I’m sorry, let me- “you reach for the napkins you thought were on the table before realizing you forgot to buy those, too. Your hand flails around you as you’re caught in your anxiety.
“You’ve done enough,” he grumbles, pushing up and walking past you to pull a rag from the counter.
You’re not sure why hearing him blotting his pants behind you does it, but you feel it immediately. That hot, wet trail down your face. And once that first tear is loose, you know you can’t stop. Suddenly, you’re silently weeping, snot and water running down your face as your shoulders shake and you reach up to try and hold yourself.
You let out a long breath, but it comes out as shaky, and the sounds from behind you stop.
 “…El?”
You begin to paw at your face but realize it’s a lost cause. Shaking your head, you ignore him and walk back to your bedroom, closing the door behind you before dropping against the wall.
You were doing so well. You hadn’t cried, you hadn’t screamed at him during his shittier moods, you had been an angel. You pushed through all of this bullshit, hoping that, even though you couldn’t compete with his life, he would notice. He would realize how much of toll your own, lesser bullshit had begun to take on you, and had some sympathy. More than that, you had hoped he would appreciate it- how you never pushed him to take care of you, how you were always there for him with a meal and warm arms, how you were soldiering on for him through all the stress. You wanted him to think you some sort of martyr, a girlfriend who was pushing all her needs down to take care of him when he needed it most. If he was emotionally unable to reciprocate, he could at least fucking notice.
But he didn’t. He was too up his own ass, too busy at work, too concerned with being the only person in this relationship with problems that he didn’t even fucking see how much your teeth nearly cracked every time you faked a smile for him. You were mad at yourself, too- you had folded into this smaller version of yourself after making excuses for him, and now you had the gall to be sad about it? You had paved this path. You tried to protect him from your pain, thinking it was kind, when really you were coddling him.
You feel anger rise in your chest. You clench your fists in your hands, and you’re about to scream into your knees when you hear the soft knock on the door. Furled by anger, you stand up quickly and swing the door open to see a much softer looking Javi in the doorway.
And that takes the wind out of your sails. Instead of laying into him like you wanted, you let out a pathetic sob. Immediately he’s pulling you towards him and you’re caught in a tight hold as you sob into one of his nicer shirts.
“El,” he says softly, and you choke out another sob on his shoulder. Carefully, the two of you descend to the floor of your bedroom as he keeps his hold on you, tracing his fingers up and down your back as you continue to cry against him.
His tone is soothing as he circles through what little he can say - “baby” and “I’m sorry” and “it’s okay”. As your cries come to a slow, you pull away from him and try to wipe your face.
“Baby,” he says again, reaching out to touch your cheek. You dare to make eye contact, and, fuck, it breaks your heart. He looks like a little boy who just realized he had crossed a line. You let out a pathetic little hiccup as you wipe your eyes again.
“I’ve tried- “you stutter on your words as your tears keep falling. “I- I know it’s hard for you, really fucking hard, I know my d-day to day can’t compare to the shi-shit you see,” you try to take in a deep breath. His hand runs down your arm. “But I’m not doing okay. And I’ve tried to put that aside to t-take care of you, but - fuck, I need- “you feel yourself begin to hyperventilate. Fuck, you haven’t cried this hard since you were a kid.
 “What do you need, baby?”
“Fuck, Javi, my mom is dying!” You yell. “She’s dying and I can’t get a hold of her. And every day I have to go to the school and hear more awful fucking stories about other kids’ families dying. I have to let them think I have any kind of answer when I fucking don’t! I’m just as lost as they are! I’m in my godamn thirties and all I want is to hug my fucking mommy, too!” You huff a few more breaths. “But I can’t, so I pretend. And I come home to you, and I- fuck, I love you so much, and I don’t want to burden you or make you take care of me when you have it so, so much worse but today- “you swallow, your mouth dry from crying - “today she was supposed to go in for surgery. And I haven’t heard anything. I spent all of lunch not eating because an eight-year-old, a fucking eight-year-old! Was telling me that she found her brother with a gunshot wound between his eyes. And I can’t do anything to help her! Just like I can’t do anything to help my fucking mother who won’t even call her daughter back to leave a message to say ‘hey! I SURVIVED SURGERY’. And maybe if I hadn’t had all of that I could put up with your shitty moods like I have been for weeks because I know it’s hard and I know you have it worse but today I just-I fucking couldn’t! I couldn’t do it! I couldn’t take YOU yelling at me when all I wanted was for you to fucking- I don’t know! Pull me in your lap and pet my hair! Ask me how my day was! Ignore my dirty apartment the way I’ve ignored your passive-aggressive moody bullshit for a month because you understand I’m not doing the fucking best right now! And I need the person who loves me to fucking act like it!” You fall forward, sobbing again. The arm on your shoulder drops, and you expect for a moment he’s going to get up and leave you to cry into the night. Instead, though, he scoots back until his back leans against the footboard of the bed. You look up in time to see him open his arms.
 “Come here,” he says.
Too eager, you scramble over to him as he pulls you against him, petting your arms and face as you keep weeping against him.
“I’m sorry,” he says. “I do see it. I do. I promise.”
You hiccup and he pulls you tighter.
“I know you have it worse- “you start.
“Stop,” he says, pressing your head against his chest.
You keep crying over the next half hour as he whispers sweet things to you. When you’ve exhausted yourself, you drop your head to his lap, fading in and out of consciousness as his fingers comb through your hair, soft and comforting. You don’t quite remember him urging you up and into bed, but by the time you’ve regained your senses somewhat he’s pulled your back against him, tucking his nose into the nape of your neck.
“I’m sorry,” you say softly. He shakes his head.
“You don’t have anything to apologize for.” He says. “Go to sleep, hermosa.”
 You do.
The next morning is quiet. The two of your dress quickly and rush out the door, having slept past your alarm. He tells you briefly he’s got a lot on at work today, and you take it as a sign you’ll be walking back this afternoon. You nod and give him a quick peck before running up the stairs to the school, at least somewhat happy to have avoided talking about last night.
So, you don’t expect it when you leave the school one afternoon and see him waiting for you outside, his arms crossed on his chest, aviators on, posed in front of his car like he’s in a film. You fight the urge to smirk when you drop down to the final step and his mouth jerks up at the corner.
“You look like a cliche,” you deadpan, walking up to give him a quick kiss. Only, it’s not quick- you try to pull away tastefully, but he takes you by your waist and pulls you into a deeper kiss. You give him a swat on his shoulder but return it regardless, luxuriating in the attention. It feels nice.
“Get in the car,” he says when he finally pulls away. You tilt your head.
  “You takin' me somewhere?”
“Not if you don’t get in the damn car,” he swats your ass, causing you to shriek, before beginning to walk around the front. Despite yourself, you smile as you clamber in.
You don’t ask questions throughout the whole drive, but you admit you’re a bit disappointed when you just pull back up to your apartment building. You try and mask it, hopping out of the car and waiting expectantly for him to come around and join you. He climbs the stairs quickly, beating you to the door to hold it open.
Without thinking, you reach for your keys. It’s almost muscle memory now. You haven’t been to his place for any real time in months. You think it reminds him too much of work.
Except, now he’s nodding you over to his door he’s begun to unlock. You come to stand by him, eying him as he fiddles with the lock. As the bolt clicks, he smiles, then turns to you.
 “Close your eyes,” he says.
 “Really?”
 “Fuck you. Yea really.”
With a small grin on your face, you make a show of daintily closing your eyes. You see a flash of light- him waving his hands in front of your face. Convinced you really have your eyes closed, you hear the door open, then feel a warm hand taking your own. You walk inside, blindly stepping after him until he drops his hand, and you feel his hands come to rest on your shoulders.
 “Alright,” he says.
You open your eyes, and it takes you a while to realize what he’s even made a fuss about. In front of you are two plates with a single sandwich and a side of potato chips. You’re kind of annoyed for a second- when you surprise him, it’s always with a cake or really good head, never just dinner. Dinner that’s basically a sandwich.
You turn to look at him before noticing that the apartment has been cleaned up. You swivel around, taking in the sight, noticing the repaired answering machine has been put carefully back on the side table. You haven’t seen your home this clean in a while, and you realize that he must have done this, too. You start to say something, but he’s already pulling out your chair for you, urging you to sit down. Lost for words, you drop yourself into the seat and watch as he comes around to sit in front of you. He waits for you to say something, but when you don’t, he begins.
“It’s not much,” he says finally. “But you were right. I’ve been a dick, and I’m not the only one with shit on my plate.” He rubs the back of his neck. “When my mom was sick…I should be better to you. For you.” He bites his lip. When you still don’t say anything, he continues. “I’m sorry, El. You’re so…good, and I’m…” he shakes his head. You reach out your hand, covering his. There’s a flash of a smile across his face. “I called sick to work. They were having me doing bullshit paperwork, anyway. Murphy can handle that.” He clears his throat. “It’s uh, not much, but a rich guy owed me a favor, and he had a smoker. I had some old rubs from Señora Garza, the one with the hands? My dad sent me them from back home a while, and I know it’s not going home, but I know you miss the food- “you reach forward and pull the top of the sandwich off.
 Brisket.
You look up at him, and you start to cry.
His face drops, alarmed. “Oh- no, baby- “
“Javi,” you wipe a tear away. “This is- this is - “you bend forward and let out another small cry. Immediately, he’s on his feet, coming around to kneel beside you. Just as he’s about to say something, you lean forward and catch his face in your hands, pulling him in for a kiss. It’s long and warm, and when he finally breaks away, you’re rewarded with a bright smile.
 “You like it?”
“I love- I love it.” You say, running a hand through his hair. “This is very sweet.”
He looks down, pleased with himself. You lean forward and press a kiss to his forehead. He reaches up and takes your hands.
“I…I really love you, El,” he says, not quite daring to look you in the eyes until he’s finished his sentence. “I just hope you know that.”
You nod before pressing another kiss to his lips. “I do,” you say. “Even when…I do know, Javi.”
He nods, and the two of you sit there, blissed out together for a moment before he lets out a breath.
“Well, you better eat. Fucking thing took six hours to smoke, better not let it get too cold.”
You let out a laugh as he stands and comes to sit across from you. With a smile, the two of you eat. It’s not the perfect approximation of the food back home, but it’s enough to fill you with the comfort you had been craving for weeks. Javi watches, proud of himself as you lick the remaining sauce off a finger, smiling at the flavor.
“You did good, Peña.” You say, flicking your eyes back to him. He smiles, tossing the napkin down between the two of you before making to stand. He walks over and extends a hand down to you, and you raise your eyebrows.
“Is there more to eat?” You ask, somewhat hopeful. It’s impossible, but if he found a way to get a malt shake down here too you think you’d have to spend the next three weeks with his dick in your mouth.
“Something like that,” he says, urging you up. You send him a playful look as he reaches behind you and pulls the zipper to your skirt. With strong hands, he pulls your underwear and skirt down to your ankles, dropping to his knees to let you step out of them. With a twinkle in his eye, he smiles up at you.
“Go sit on the couch,” he orders. “And keep your knees apart.”
Turns out his surprises come with pretty good head, too.
A/N: Idk if this is of any interest but in my head Eloise is played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. But of course, you cast her however you like!! She’s yours, too

Chapter 1: The Outcast
Tumblr media
“How could you possibly sleep right now?” Her mother asked while yanking her blankets off of her which earned her a loud groan “Today is a special day for you”
Luna lazily rolled over to the other side of the bed “Special for me or for the pack?” She muttered into her pillow
Before she knew it, she was yanked out of the bed and onto the hardwood floor below “I’m serious Luna!” Her mom hissed while the girl rubbed her now sore head “It’s been centuries since the pack was lead by a female alpha”
Luna slowly rose from the ground “It’s not that big of a deal” she huffed “It’s been done before”
The older woman crossed her arms “What is your problem?”
She slightly shrugged her broad shoulders “I just don’t see what the big deal is”
“You come from a long line of alphas-”
“Cool” her mother gave her a stern look
“This means a lot to your father so it should mean just as much to you”
Luna ripped off her bonnet and shook her wild curls “Have you ever thought of the possibility that hmm, I don’t want to kill my own father and take up all of these responsibilities and have everyone look to me for guidance?” She gave a small smile but her mother shook her head
“Of course not” her mother returned her smile “The Luna I know is head strong- careless, but head strong when she wants to be” she slowly rubbed her shoulders “She’s full of leadership and untapped potential so to answer your question, no. I haven’t thought of the possibility of you not wanting this position”
Luna then put her arms on her mothers shoulder “Mom, I don’t want this position” she sternly told her but she just rolled her eyes “I’m serious!” She huffed as her mom pushed past her “I don’t know the first thing about leading a pack”
“You lead hunts all the time!”
Luna grabbed her mothers hands “Mom, that’s different”
“How so? The others already listen to you and respect you, it would be the same thing but with the title of Alpha wolf”
“Yeah along with the responsibilities of keeping everyone safe and solving every single problem that we seem to have”
She then tied her curly brown hair into a ponytail “Where are you going?”
“For a run” she told her as she stretched “Need to clear my head”
Her mother stopped her in her tracks by holding her face in the palms of her hands “Don’t be late to the ceremony tonight” the girl rolled her eyes and nodded “I love you Luna” her thumbs gently caressed her cheeks “You don’t understand how proud you’re making your entire family”
“I love you too mom” she responds softly while gently removing her mothers hands from her face “I’ll see you later okay?”
With a slight nod Luna exited her room and out of their home to find some peace of mind. Her tan skin then began to turn into fur and she grew two times her size once she had all four limbs on the ground.
Running was probably the only thing Luna could do without getting in trouble. There was no “lead by example” or “stop showing off” she could just be herself with no consequences.
Granted, she did like that the other wolves respected her, but that was solely based on the fact that her father was pack leader. She heard the whispers, how could she not? She had excellent hearing. They all disliked her, they were jealous. They would even tell the cubs to stay away from her because they would rather kill them than have them turn out to be like her.
Was being a free spirit that bad? She was just curious of everything, she couldn’t help it. Apparently she got the trait from her father. Of course being fascinated with everything is a whole lot different if you’re a alpha male.
Dad
He didn’t have long, he was getting weak. For as long as she could remember she dreaded the day this would come. She wasn’t like her father, not in the way they wanted her to be anyway. She wasn’t full of wisdom and knew how to be cool, calm, and collected. She didn’t care if random fights broke out around the village or if the cubs learned how to hunt in their youthful days. She wasn’t fit for the position.
Flashback
“Can I be honest with you?” Luna asked her father and he just nods “I don’t wanna be alpha wolf”
“I know” his deep voice replied softly “No one wants it to be you either” ouch “Responsibility is a burden no one wishes to carry. The blame will always go to you if something goes wrong”
“So then how do you do it?” She asked “How do you not get stressed from everything?”
“Who says I don’t get stressed?” She quickly looked over to him “The key is how you hide it”
“Well…” she looked around the woods and over at the waterfall across the way “What situations stress you out?”
He lets out a deep sigh “When I have to explain why the person who ruined a weeks supply of food for the entire pack should be the new alpha wolf”
Her amber eyes met his crimson ones “It was an accident”
“You try explaining that to twenty hungry cubs” she lowered her head in defeat “Your actions are more meaningful than your words”
“So what was I supposed to do? Go hunt by myself to makeup for all the food I lost?”
He slightly nods his head “Something to show that you care about what you did”
A huff escaped her mouth “So what did you do?”
He turned to face her “I told them that you were a free spirit. You’re being forced to grow up to take care of everyone else before you get to experience your childhood. I then said that it’ll take time for you to grow up and mature to be your own wolf”
“You remembered what you said word for word?” He slowly nods “Bar for bar?” His eyes darted to her own
“Never change who you are Luna” that made her ears perk up with interest “You may not be the wolf they want, but you’re the wolf they need to understand that change isn’t always bad”
She slowly shook her head “Why can’t you just do it, they listen to every word you say”
He turns his head back to the waterfall “The words wouldn’t mean the same if they came out of my mouth” the wolf besides her was probably three times her size, long black fur and striking red eyes, and yet she felt the safest around him. She couldn’t imagine such a calm nature coming from an intimidating wolf like him.
“When I become alpha will I look just like you?” He looks over at her with curiosity “The black fur, the red eyes?”
“Go” he told her “I’ll tell your mother you went on a run” She shook her head in confusion “You want to know what’s on that side of the forest so go, explore”
He knew what she was thinking with just one look “But I thought you said beyond the waterfall was forbidden?”
He slowly walked back towards the village but stopped in his tracks “Just don’t do anything stupid”
End of flashback
Why should I waste my twenties being something that I’m not?
Luna then left her usual route and ran towards the waterfall
Dad would want me to explore, I’m sure they’ll understand

If He Was Your Fan, Chapter 61: Britainization, Part 2 (A Henry Cavill Fanfic)
Chapter 61: Britainization, Part 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Henry announces that he is driving you and Stella to a place for breakfast. You and Stella are both relieved you got dressed up a bit. The name Lanes of London Mayfair is a big indication that you should. You are dressed in a fluffy burgundy fisherman’s sweater and black leggings with brown riding boots, looking ready for a day of shopping but not at the gym. Stella is in a white shirt and beige jeans with dark brown sports jacket and ankle boots. You are happy you left your usual athletic gear behind.
After that, Henry takes you and Stella to a place that is not even listed.
“Henry?”
“Hmm?”
“I looked up London Trench,” you tell him. “They are online orders only, aren’t they?”
“For the general public, yes.”
You and Stella look at each other. She looks excited but you feel sick for some reason.
With a knock on the door, and Henry telling his name and time on the intercom, you are buzzed in. You step into a boutique that almost looks hidden.
“Mr. Cavill?” a woman bows.
“Hello,” he nods. “This is my lady and her friend. My lady needs a few trenches.”
A few? Did he say few? A few trenches was like…rent money! You look at him incredulously, and he only gives small smile.
“Must make it worth their while,” he shrugs.
Within an hour you are in selections called the Queen Classic, a straight cut, and the Goddess, an A-Line for dresses. You opt for the Goddess, and he takes you to Burberry’s for something shorter and surprisingly more expensive than that. You are cringing inside, and Henry hasn’t flinched. He is happy to see you try on coats. You feel the looks of the sales people at both stores. Face to face they are amicable and friendly, but you see the looks in the reflections of the mirrors when they do not think they’re looking. They don’t think much of you, maybe they think you’re a flavor of the month? Maybe it’s all in your head?
“Well, that’s that,” he sighs. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah,” you smile. “yeah.”
“Sweetheart?” he says slowly, his blue eyes searching yours.
“I-I didn’t realize they’d be so—”
“Good coats are required here, love, I won’t have you getting sick,” he nods, tipping your face up for a quick kiss.
You nod and smile in understanding.
“Alright, you two, don’t get into too much trouble,” he winks. He gets in his car and is gone.
“Gotta be at work today by four for the dinner rush,” Stella said brightly. “What do you want to do?”
“Let’s just hit a mall or something,” you say. “and we can’t go someplace Henry would.”
“I know, the places he took us!” Stella laughs. “He’s…he’s kinda out of it, isn’t he?”
“Childhood weight problems aside, I don’t think he realizes how hard it is out here, no!” you laugh back. “Experience is the best teacher on those things.” You get slightly serious. “I hope he never suffers like that. No one should.”
You both decide to go to Victoria’s Secret several blocks away, opting to start walking off that massive breakfast you just had. When you arrive, you ask for what they have in emerald green.
“That his favorite color?” Stella asks.
“No, it’s actually blue,” you say. “hey do you have any blue green?”
“Hold on, let me see what we have,” the clerk smiles and leaves to check.
“You seem to buy a lot of that stuff,” she says softly. “Do you wear it?”
You are looking on a rack, but you are thinking of the previous night:
“It’s tomorrow,” Henry said softly and pinned you against the door to kiss you.
You instinctively put your arms around him, welcoming his kiss, his touch. You raise your leg and he semi squats to help you wrap it around him. You both pulled at each other’s clothes hungry to feel skin to skin, your kisses passionate and breathy. You pulled your sweater over your head as he wrapped your other leg around his hips, kissing your chest and licking the skin between your breasts that your bra left exposed. He carried you up the steps to your loft bedroom and laid you on the bed, pulling your jeans off. He smiled at your navy blue bra and panty set. He returned to kissing you, and you pull at his sweater as he unbuckles his belt, slid it off and threw it carelessly on the floor. He slid his jeans off, and stood in nothing but boxer briefs that did not hide his arousal. He crushed you into the sheets and you arched to him, wanting nothing more than to feel him…
“It’s a lot easier to always wear bra and panty sets,” you joke softly.
“How many do you have?”
“Uh….I really don’t know?” you answer honestly.
After getting lingerie and clothes, you catch the tube to Angel Central Mall, and do some shopping there. You feel terrible that there isn’t time for a mani pedi, so you find a massage place that does shoulders and neck, promising to do a pamper session on another day.
As you both make your way back to Brixton, you look at the sights out of the window, try to remember the exchanges. You are so grateful to Stella for being your friend, smiling at her as she steals a nap during the ride home. You notice that some young people are staring at you. You sigh. You may be recognized, you have to get used to that.
youtube
Back in Brixton, walk back to your building together.
“There were people staring at you?” Stella gasps “Why didn’t you wake me?”
“There was no danger,” you tell her smoothly.
“Why haven’t you posted yet?”
“What?”
“Why haven’t you posted yet?”
“I post all the time—”
“Never pictures of yourself, though.” Her eyes narrow. "And never of you and Henry."
“Even before I dated Henry, I never posted much about my love life online,” you shrug. “My s/o’s asked to take pictures, so I didn’t deny them, but I’m not big on my love life on social media. Special occasions or requests sure but—”
“I get it, you like that your relationship is between you and Henry, not you, the world and Henry.”
“Yeah, it’s more intimate that way,” you smile. “I have pictures of Henry and me on my phone. Besides, it’s lots easier if there is a breakup.”
“Breakup?!” Stella chortled. “Break up? You and Henry? I don’t think so.” She pauses and turns you around in mid walk. “I’ve seen how he looks at you. He has no intention of letting you go.”
“I know,” you nod. “I’ve had the rug ripped out from under me before, that’s all.”
“You have?” she asks. “How bad?”
“Engaged,” you shrug, earning a small gasp from Stella. “he thought the ring on my finger, though not the marriage one, meant he could treat me any way he wanted. He cheated, he lied…it was like he thought the commitment gave him carte blanche to act up.”
“That’s shitty.”
“Yeah,” you shake your head. “Rings can be a symbol of love that will never end, but for some it is ownership or cuffs.”
“Kinda dark, there.” she says softly. "I don't think Henry is--"
“Sorry, it’s in the past, and I’m over it, but I learned that commitments mean different things to different people.” You take a deep breath. “It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this way, Stella.”
“What do you mean?”
“The last time I was in love was my ex-fiancee,” you tell her. “and that was a long, long, time ago.”
“So you are in love with Henry!” she cheers.
“Yeah, of course, I am!” you laugh at her. “He’s intelligent and fun, has a good degree of common sense. He’s a natural leader and he is protective of and warm to those he loves. I need that, all of it. I have never felt so safe before, never..”
“He’s not bad looking either!”
“His looks can only go so far,” you shrug. “I’ve dated men who were good looking, even a model and an athlete. You’d be surprised how little that all matters if they are thick or coldhearted. Or even worse, a man with money who thinks he can treat you any way he wants because he buys you things--”
“Thick.”
“Yeah…” you giggle, realizing you’re using a British term. “thick.”
You both drop your stuff and go back to Market Row, Stella to work and you to do more shopping. Upi check out some of the surrounding stores, hoping for some really special finds that could liven up or make you feel more unique.
You finally make your last huge purchase: a bicycle. You head to Brixton Bikes for that, and get the lights, the helmet, anything you need. Strapping your bags to the rack in back and no longer a single walking moving target, you head home.
Just as you get a good stride on, your Bluetooth starts to play the instrumental version of “Addicted to Love.” You smile, clicking on. “Hey, love.”
“Hey….are you out and about?”
“About to head home,” you say.
“By yourself?”
You don't miss the edge in his voice. “On my new bike,” you tell him. He is quiet. Ooh, that’s not good. “Sounds like you’re in pub.”
“Yeah, yeah, very good, I'm at the pub, " He says. You can hear the smile in his voice for not using the word bar. "just for a pint with friends,” he says. “I just wanted to see how your day went.”
“Pretty well, but we didn’t have time for spa,” you say. “but I did find some nice things.”
“Good, glad to hear it,” he says. “I’ll stay on till you get home.”
“Awwwww.” Some men sigh dramatically in the background.
“Shut up!” Henry laughs.
You talk until you are safely inside your studio. “Alright, I’m locked up tight.” You feed Luna.
“Good,” he exhales. “they say it isn’t safe for women—”
“I am a moving target now, Henry.”
“Alright, alright,” he exhales heavily. “Talk to you later?”
“Definitely,” you sigh, sitting on your couch and starting to unpack your purchases. “Love you.”
“I love you, too.” He purrs, earning another round of catcalls from his friends. He laughs.
“Good night.” You shake your head at him and his friends.
“Good night.”
The first forty eight hours in your studio have been anything but calm, but now there is quiet. After unpacking your things and washing them for wear, you finally get ready to go to sleep. You take a shower and make your way up the steps to bed. It suddenly looks too big to you. You suddenly notice there is something under your covers. You pull them back and find the t-shirt he wore under his sweater last night. You squeal and throw off your nightshirt, trading it for this one. His scent surrounds you as you pull it over your head and you fall on the bed, your impact setting off the scent of him in your bed. You inhale with a smile as Luna jumps up and sleeps at the foot of the bed opposite you, where she usually nestles by Henry’s feet. You look at each other and you sigh dreamily, closing your eyes and letting sleep claim you.

Night Moves
Draco X Reader (college!AU)
Summary: Healing was a long process, and Draco was there to wait for you.
A/n: Do I know what this is? No, not really. It’s cute and fluffy and a warm up as I get into the habit of writing again now that the semester has been winding down. Let me know if you want more modern college stuff, because I don’t mind it one bit. I love y’all, and as always, I want to know what you think.
Tumblr media
I paused, a call coming in from a familiar name. I answered it, pausing my work.
“Are you in bed?” His voice sounded almost excited.
“Uh... no?” I raised an eyebrow that he couldn’t see. “Just working on some stuff for class,”
“So... you haven’t showered or anything?” He pressed.
“No,” I almost laughed, leaning back in my desk chair. “I’m still presentable if that’s your question.”
“It is,” He sounded delighted. “I’ll be outside in twenty minutes.”
“For what?” I pressed on, closing my laptop. “Draco, why am I being kidnapped tonight?”
“Does it matter?” He countered and I could hear the engine of his car thrum. “Twenty minutes.”
“Yeah, yeah,” I chuckled. “I’ll see you then.”
Smiling, I stood from my desk, stretching. Checking the mirror to make sure that I was presentable, I concluded I would be good enough for me. Probably not Draco, but that could be his problem. Humming and straightening up around my room for the night, knowing that I wouldn’t be back until late, I leaned against my desk waiting for his call to let me know he was outside my building.
The call came and I grabbed a sweater and headed downstairs, breaking out into the crisp air of the night. He was there, of course, looking pristine as ever, leaning against his shiny sleek black car. The smile on his face was more valuable than his sports car and immaculate outfit, however. It had been a while since I had seen him smile like that.
“You’re unusually chipper,” I noted.
“My classes were canceled for tomorrow and thought you might like a break from your essays and projects,” He raised an eyebrow, opening the car door for me before rounding the car to get in himself.
“You’d be right,” I smiled, taking his passenger seat.
Stopping at a local sweet shop and picking up more than enough for the two of us, we drove the city streets, alive with night life, laughing at the ridiculousness of the outing. Pulling up to his apartment building, we crashed on his couch, on a sugar and freedom high.
Settling on the next show on our list of things to watch together, we found blankets, tea, and comfort in the soft lighting of the tv. I glimpsed over at Draco as one episode shifted to another, and in the blue light he seemed almost at peace. Like there was no weight on his shoulders anymore.
“You’re staring,” He raised an eyebrow, glancing over at me.
“Well, you’re so gosh darn pretty,” I taunted, rolling my eyes, and looking away. “Am I not allowed to look at you then?” My tone remained in jest.
“I suppose I’ll allow it,” He grinned.
“Thank you so much,” My face fell flat at his antics.
The hour grew later and our sugar high waned until my eyes had a hard time staying open all the way and I was slumped against Draco, who wasn’t faring much better than I was. My hand absentmindedly played with his, tracing random patterns on his warm skin and fidgeting with his rings.
His hand pulled from my, drawing my attention to his face, which was now closer than I had originally thought. I wasn’t afraid though. It was Draco. I trusted him more than most.
In the fog of the sugar crash, the blue light, and the late hour, a softness fell between us. Comfortable and safe. Vulnerable.
My eyes finally slipped closed as he drew nearer. But I paused.
Looking down, I pulled back fractionally. He let out the breath he was holding and backed away as well.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered, hopeless. “I...”
“No, I’m sorry,” his voice was soft and gentle.
“God no don’t apologize,” I almost laughed, my hands resting on his chest. “It’s not you. It’s me. I...”
“It’s him,” he answered softly. We had been friends long enough for Draco to know the pain that my past love had caused to me heart and the tears that came of it.
“Yeah,” I let out a defeated sigh. “I’m... I’m really sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize either,” he tilted my chin up so that I would meet his eyes. “What he did... whatever he did... that’s not your fault.”
“But,”
“No,” he stopped me gently.
I sat up, pulling away from him and hugged my knees. “It’s so stupid,”
“It’s not stupid.” He replied softly, tucking my hair behind my ear.
“I’m... I’m just so scared,” I confessed to the soft blankets around us. “And it’s stupid.”
“It’s not stupid,” I could hear the smile in his voice as his arm pulled me close to him. “Smartest girl there is. Knows Latin for crying out loud and here she is calling herself stupid,” Tucking me into his arms, I uncurled a bit.
“I am stupid. I was stupid I... I don’t want to screw up like that again,” Tears picked my eyes. “I don’t want to go through that again.”
“Hey,” he called softly, causing my to look up at him. “Just because he screwed up doesn’t mean you have to for the rest of your life,” a smile drew on my face. “And not that I don’t value your affection but, it’s just a kiss sweetheart. It’s not heartbreak and tears. It’s not forever. It’s just tonight.”
I nodded and wiped away my tears, resting my head on his shoulder, finding comfort in his words. He rubbed my arm softly, holding me in the quiet of the night. Quietly he pressed his lips to the crown of my head and inhaled deeply.
“Thank you, Draco,” I whispered, silent tears falling. “I know it’s not fair to you,”
“I wouldn’t say that,” He refuted. “I know you need time. I’m here to wait,”
A smile played at my lips. “You... you don’t mind? I... I know it’s a lot.”
“Even if were nothing more than friends, it’s enough for me Y/n,” He smiled down at me. “If I get to watch you rise from the ashes and become a new healed person, that’s more than I could ever ask for,”
“You really are something else Draco, you know that?” I looked up at him, laying my head on his shoulder. A deep breath. “And if you’re willing to wait, I’d love to wait with you,” A deeper thought. “Just let me make it through a year... let me try a year without him...”
“But not alone,” Draco assured, tightening his grip on me. “Let’s get you home though,”
“Is it that awkward?” I dismayed.
“No,” He laughed, and I could feel it shake through him. “But it is nearly two in the morning and I do believe you have class in the morning?”
“Are you gonna be okay driving?” I asked with genuine concern.
“Give me a little credit Y/n,” He rolled his eyes, taking the both of us to our feet. “We’ll be fine,”
“Okay...” I was still skeptical.
“You’re quiet,” He noted as we drove through the sleeping city.
“Thinking,” I replied, tearing my gaze from the twinkling lights and to him. “I... I didn’t... I haven’t been leading you on have I? Because I never meant to,”
There must have been something in my tone or in the worry on my face that made him laugh.
“No,” He clarified. “Though it would be hard for anyone near you not to fall for you in some way,”
I offered a small smile. It faded as my depressing thoughts came back.
“I’m sorry, was that too much?” He consoled softly, his voice barely audible above the hum of the car.
“I... No, I don’t think so,” I decided. “I don’t know,” I sighed, wrapping my arms around myself. “You... you know... I... I’m okay...”
“You’re okay in the moment, but afterward, when you’re alone is when it starts to hurt again,” Somehow, he always had the words that I could never find. I hummed an acknowledgement. “Just...” Now it seemed that he was at a loss for words. “Don’t stop telling me what hurts, even if it’s something I do,”
Nodding, I gave a smile.
“Thanks, Draco,”

Ina x MC: That Day
Ina x MC: That Day
Loosely based on chapter 6 of QB. Read the other parts of the series here: The Dance, A Small Detour, One Chance.
Summary: Ina and Luna discuss their past.
Warnings: Sadness, I guess. Warning for coming out stories?
Tag: @samanthadalton @domakir @kulaykape @hellyeah90sbaby @dopeyouth @kwaj05 @thedaft1 @swimmingshoebakerydreamer (Let me know if you’d like to be added or removed)
Author’s Notes: Sorry, I’ve been real busy, but here’s another installment of my series.
——————————————————————–———–———–———–
Luna strolled into Ina’s office at a quarter past seven. It’d been a long day for both of them. Ina had a full day of lectures and quizzes while Luna had midterms approaching.
“Professor,” Luna said, putting down her bags.
“Good evening, Luna. How are you?”
The two made small talk while Ina pulled the stack of quizzes she needed graded. But as well as Ina could hide her emotions, Luna felt there was something off about Ina.
“Here’s the answer key,” Ina began. “It’s all multiple choice so it shouldn’t take too long.”
Ina handed Luna a red pen. But Luna wasn’t paying attention to Ina. Instead, she scoured through the stack of papers, pulling one out and comparing the answers.
“Whose is that?” Ina peered over Luna’s shoulder. “Oh, that’s right. You took this quiz today.”
Luna hummed in reply. “Aww man. I got one wrong.”
This time, it was Ina’s turn to tease Luna. “Nerd,” she scoffed.
“Shut up.”
The two worked in silence, except for Ina going ham on her keyboard. That research paper wasn’t going to write itself.
“Why are you typing so vigorously?” Luna commented absent-mindedly.
“Hmm...I don’t know, maybe because this paper’s due at midnight,” Ina said quite uncharacteristically. Ina, the polite and beloved anthropology professor, was not one to be so brash.
Rude! For no reason! Luna thought. While Luna was pondering the true reason for Ina’s disrespect, Ina stood up and began pacing back and forth. Finally, she stopped, slumping onto the couch that sat at the corner of the room.
“Ina?” Luna questioned, getting off of her chair. Like usual, her initial intuition was spot-on, something was, in fact, off.
Ina laid on the couch, her head resting on the couch’s arm. When Luna finally approached it, she took a look at Ina. Her face was slightly glossy, tear-stained.
“Scoot over,” Luna said firmly.
Ina huffed a little, but she moved further into the couch. Luna faced Ina, acting as a handkerchief, wiping away Ina’s tears.
“Do you wanna talk about it?” Luna finally broke the silence.
“No.”
“Okay. We can just lie here together. It’s okay.” Luna wrapped her arms around Ina. Ina subsequently buried her face in her shoulder, her tears falling slowly, wetting Luna’s shirt.
The two stayed like this for a few more moments, until Ina sat up, wiping the lasts of her tears. “I apologize, Luna. I owe you an explanation.”
“You don’t need to-”
“Please, I want to. I feel like you should know.”
“Only if you’re sure.”
“I am.” Ina had gained her confidence back. “I know we haven’t known each other for long, but I trust you. Maybe it’s naive or too early, but well...I feel like I could tell you anything, and you wouldn’t judge me. So here goes.”
And boy, did Ina open up. It was unlike anything Luna had ever witnessed from the mysterious professor. But she wasn’t complaining. This was arguably what she loved most about Ina.
“It was my freshman year of high school and I was sitting in my US history class. I was such a little nerd,” Ina recalled fondly. “Anyway, this girl walked into my class and god, I was smitten. What she made me feel...I’d never felt before. I mean, I hadn’t been with any guy, but this was different. Sure I’d thought some guys were attractive, but every time I looked at her, I got butterflies.”
“Aww! I’m imagining a little nerdy Ina staring at a pretty high schooler now.”
“Mhm. Well, we got assigned each other for a project. And we hit it off. She was brilliant, passionate, caring...I really liked her, but I thought it was just as friends. One afternoon, we went to the library together to prepare for the presentation of the project. She asked me if I liked girls, and I hadn’t really considered it. Some sort of internalized homophobia, I guess. I went home that day just deep in thought. But God, she made me feel so alive. It was something I’d never experienced before. And then I just started thinking of kissing her and I never wanted to stop. I think I knew then and there that I liked women.”
“Well? What happened after?” Luna asked, invested in Ina’s anecdote.
“A few days later, some teacher was berating her for not knowing an answer to something rather trivial and I found myself defending her. I guess my protective side came out.”
“Not the only thing that came out then...” Luna smirked.
Ina scoffed but had a huge grin on her face. But just as quickly as it appeared, her smile faded.
“When we left school that day, she uh thanked me with a kiss. And that’s how I knew for sure that I liked her. A lot. I asked her out a few weeks later and we were together for a little over a year. At the time, she meant the world to me. We’d do everything together and she was my first for a lot of things, my first kiss, my first love...”
“A year? That is...surprisingly long for a relationship at that time. Why’d it end?”
“Her parents were incredibly supportive. They knew about us since the beginning of the relationship. Mine...did not know. I had told Lilian, and she listened and supported me a lot. We were always pretty close. Well, after a year together, Emma asked to meet my conservative parents. I was both giddy and nervous, but I thought I was ready. I truly thought love was unconditional. Maybe I was naive to think acceptance was guaranteed. And well, I told my parents that I had someone special for them to meet. In retrospect, I should’ve told them more details. Maybe they were expecting a dashing young man that could escort me to Prom in the following year or whatnot. And well, Emma came over for dinner and I told my parents about us. They...were shocked. Their perfect little nerdy daughter was gay. They didn’t handle themselves well that night. They said some unforgivable things to Emma. We tried to work through it, but we were young and broke up a few weeks after that.”
“Ina, I’m so sorry.”
“I...it’s okay. It’s been a while now. They didn’t throw me out of the house, but they didn’t talk about my sexuality at all. Emma was always my ‘friend.’ No one in the extended family knew. It was like they were ashamed of me. Lilian was the wild child and I was the apple of my parents’ eyes, but they never looked at me the same after that dinner. It was a tough time. Lilian and my friends at school supported me. If it weren’t for them...I don’t know where I’d be now.”
Luna caressed Ina’s check, wiping away the flowing tears.
“I just existed in their house for a while. I had a brief period of dating guys who were’t too good for me, probably out of my parents lack of support. Trying to be straight. But there was never any feelings between the two of us. They just...weren’t Emma. The last guy I dated was sweet, but I felt nothing for him romantically. And then Lilian was pregnant. And that was the last straw for my parents. They kicked out Lilian and I left with her. After all those years of her supporting me, I needed to support her. They said some inexcusable things to her and I’m glad we left. But it was incredibly difficult. Lilian and I struggled a lot. We had to work odd jobs just to pay rent whilst still going to school. Today’s the anniversary of them kicking us out. Today I have to be strong for Lilian’s sake, but I lost my parents that day too. I guess it all just hit me now.”
“You don’t need to apologize. Come here.”
Luna wrapped Ina in her arms once more. Then, she held Ina’s face, staring intensely into her eyes.
“You are the strongest woman I know. Strongest person I know. But it’s okay to not be strong too. You don’t need to pretend to be strong 24/7. Strength and weakness...that’s what makes us human.”
Ina smiled at Luna, tears falling freely. For a moment, they just stared at each other. Ina then leaned in, closing the gap between them. She captured Luna’s lips slowly, but as the kiss prolonged, the passion increased. When they finally pulled away, both women were out of breath.
Ina cleared her throat, standing up and beckoning Luna to get on her feet.
“Dance with me.”
Luna took a second to play a song on her phone, but she then gratefully accepted, leaning into Ina’s arms as they moved slowly.
Tu cabeza en mi hombro
Quiero yo tener siempre
Acaríciame, cielo

Ina smiled again at Luna, a hand rising from Luna’s waist to cup her cheek.
“I hope your coming out story is better than mine,” she jested.
“Well, yeah I guess. When my family moved to the States from Venezuela, my mom always emphasized the importance of getting a good education, being prudent, all of that. I was very involved in high school, and I was a part of a lot of science extracurriculars. My freshman year of high school, my mom forced me to join mock trial to improve my public speaking. I thought it was useless since I knew I wanted to do neuroscience. She drove me to every practice, every conference...I fell in love with it. The more I did research for trials, the more passionate I became about public policy, law, and civil rights. And of course, gay rights. I guess that’s how I knew. Mind you, I was one of those kids who cuffed their jeans and got called out for not sitting in chairs properly.”
“It makes so much sense now. And you are...extremely well-spoken. Anyway, how’d you tell your parents?”
“We were at a mock trial competition. I had just used Obergefell v. Hodges as legal precedent to win the trial. My parents picked me up and I told them all about the case. My dad kinda stopped me mid-sentence and asked me if I had anything to tell them.”
“And?”
“I told them, but they said they already knew. They didn’t care who I’d be with, as long as they’re someone decent, kind, protective...the whole nine yards. The only problem is that they’re just very nosy about my love life. If I texted someone and smiled they’d look to see who it is. They also acted as if each person I’d bring home to meet them was the love of my life.”
Unreasonable jealousy flashed through Ina’s eyes, but her voice remained steady. “Did you bring a lot of people home to meet your parents?”
“Wouldn’t you like to know,” Luna smiled smugly.

Chapter Fifteen The Heist
Luna Lovegood hated Hogwarts. Yes, she was in Ravenclaw, and yes, she loved learning, but school? School was where curiosity went to die in a long, slow, stretched out sentence.
For Luna, the transition from her family home, where her father had encouraged her explorations and experiments, to a place of high stone walls and demanding bells had been terrible for her, and she’d nearly quit after her first year.
Now she was glad that she had persisted, because school had one thing worthwhile: Ginny Weasley.
When Ginny had hexed those boys for calling her Loony, the stars in the dark night had burst into existence, and school had become not just bearable, but pleasant. Luna had skipped everywhere for the rest of the that week.
This year, however, there was no skipping. Even Herbology, one of Luna’s favourite subjects, was overcast by the horrid cloud that Snape and the Carrows left on the school.
At least Ginny and Neville were in Herbology with her. N.E.W.T.-level courses often combined sixth and seventh years, and Luna was glad to have her closest friends with her at least once a week.
They were currently repotting Venomous Tentacula, which involved lots of soothing whispers and gentle strokes to the stem and vines. Neville worked easily, and Luna did too, even humming a lullaby to her knot of vines as she transferred the plant into a larger pot and carefully aerated the soil.
“Ow!” Ginny hissed, drawing her hand away from her plant.
Luna patted one of her vines and paused her melody. “Did it bite you, Ginny?”
Ginny pressed her wounded hand to her mouth. “Just got me with its leaves. Bloody bastard hates me.”
“You have to be gentle,” she sang, and reached for a watering can.
“I am gentle!”
Luna giggled. Ginny could be gentle, but it was not her natural state by any stretch.
Once Luna had finished repotting her Tentacula, she moved to Ginny’s station to help her work.
“You have to be kind and patient.” Luna ran her fingers along one of the vines. “It’s a sensitive plant.”
Beneath Luna’s hands, the vines no longer lashed out with sharp, sudden outbursts of movement, but instead swayed in time to her humming.
“See?” Luna paused her song. “Now put your fertilizer in that pot.”
Professor Sprout praised them all for their hard work, and congratulated them for finishing the lesson without any bite accidents. “There’s usually at least one of you turned bright purple and on your way up to the hospital wing, but you all did excellent work today,” she beamed at them.
“Hospital wing’s full up anyway,” Hannah Abbott mumbled, just out of Sprout’s earshot, as she cleaned up her work station.
Hannah looked unusually wild today. Her thick plaits were uncharacteristically loose, and dirt streaked her cheeks. She wrestled her book into her bag with the sort of determination one might use when salvaging Snargaluff pods.
Neville reached across his station to hers and picked up her shovel and trowel. “Ernie will be fine,” he murmured, and returned her tools to the greenhouse shed.
Hannah tried and failed to regain control of her trembling lip, then hurried out of the greenhouse before Neville could come back.
It wasn’t just Ernie, who was recovering from a detention after he had called the Daily Prophet “rubbish” and added that he hoped Harry would show up at Hogwarts so he could “put Snape in his place.”
It was Parvati and Padma Patil, who had refused to attend Muggle Studies. Each night that they refused earned them a night of detention, until after three weeks both girls had become too ill to attend any of their classes.
It was Hugh Ward, who had defiantly announced to the boys in his Slytherin dormitory that he was a half-blood.
Luna didn’t know what curses the boys had used to try to punish Hugh for being so proud of his Muggle lineage, but he had been in the hospital wing all week. Luna had visited him, and the Patil twins. She made a point to visit anyone who had been in Dumbledore’s Army, because they were her friends.
On these visits, it was not uncommon for her to find Hannah, helping Madam Pomfrey change linens and administer medicine to those who needed it. Though Hannah never did any of the Charm work in the hospital wing, she watched closely each time Madam Pomfrey cast a spell.
Luna knew that Hannah wanted to become a Healer. Each time Luna visited the hospital wing, she thought about becoming a Healer, too. She liked caring for people, and she was taking enough N.E.W.T.s for it. But so much of Healing was urgent, and Luna had never done well with urgent.
“Must you always move so slowly?” Ginny snapped.
Luna frowned at her gloves as she packed them away. She much preferred the greenhouse to the castle and couldn’t understand why Ginny was so eager to get back. She’d much rather be down here with the fresh air than back with the Carrows.
“Come on,” Ginny whined, “I’m starved.”
Luna squeezed her Herbology textbook between her personal field guide and the thick tome for Transfiguration. With those three texts and her scaly Care of Magical Creatures book, her bag was nearly bursting at the seams.
“Why didn’t you eat breakfast?” Luna shouldered her heavy bag and hurried to the door where Ginny and Neville were waiting.
“I wasn’t hungry at breakfast.”
“Helen said she was sulking in the Owlery after a row with Harry,” Neville whispered, but not as quietly as he should have.
“We didn’t have a row! And anyway, don’t use his name. Someone might hear you.”
“Should we just call him You-Know-Who?” Neville asked with a grin.
Ginny shoved him, none too gently, and picked up her pace, leaving Neville and Luna trailing behind her.
Luna pursed her lips and looked up at Neville. There was something different about him this year, but Luna couldn’t quite put her finger on it.
“Did you grow taller over the summer?” she asked, and tried to gauge if she was looking up more than she had looked up last year.
“What? Oh — yeah, I did. Gran sent out for a whole new wardrobe.” He wrinkled his nose. “It was only like, an inch I think, but she insisted. I think it was her way of apologising that Mum and Dad were gone most of the summer.”
Luna tilted her head. “I suppose they work quite a lot.”
Neville laughed. “I haven’t seen much of them since… well, I guess since Voldemort came back. I mean, a meal here and there, but usually only one at a time.”
“I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s not bad.” He adjusted his bag. “Their work’s important. And I’ve always had Gran around.”
Luna looked down at her hands. There was dirt under her nails, and she supposed she ought to clean up before lunch, but she liked when her hands were dirty. It reminded her of her mother, who had always smelled like earth and soot. It also reminded her of her father, whose fingers were often stained with ink.
“But you miss them.”
It wasn’t a question. Luna didn’t ask questions she already knew the answers to. There were plenty of other questions to be concerned with.
“What do you think we should call Harry?” she asked. “And I suppose we’ll need names for Ron and Hermione as well. Should we all have secret names? Like cats, perhaps? I should like to be Turnip.”
When she and Neville reached the castle, Ginny was waiting impatiently at the door.
“You both walk slow,” she complained, and stormed inside.
“My,” Luna said, “it must have been quite a bad fight with Parsnip.”
Neville frowned. “No, I don’t like that one.”
“Butterscotch?”
“Hmm…”
“Pickled Herring?”
“Must it be food?”
“I like Pickled Herring, because it sounds like him, but backwards.”
“I suppose.”
Luna waved goodbye to Neville and joined the Ravenclaw table. She sat next to a girl named Kim Sheringham, who Luna did not consider a friend, exactly, but they had lived together for the better part of six years, which might count for something to other people. It just didn’t count very much to Luna.
“Hi, Luna,” said Kim.
“Hello,” Luna said, but remained focused on her lunch
“How was Herbology?”
Luna hummed. “Warm. Pleasant.” She reached for the pitcher and poured herself a glass of water.
“Sounds nice. Listen, do you think you could do me a favour?”
Luna stared at Kim and took a sip from her cup. She waited for Kim to ask for what she really wanted.
Kim faltered, but she’d always been more keen on small talk than Luna. Finally, she said, “Could you tell Flitwick I’m not well? I need to review for the Muggle Studies exam tonight. Please, I just can’t keep all the Sacred Twenty-Eight straight. Just tell Flitwick I fell ill after lunch or something. Any excuse will do.”
Ravenclaws, as a rule, did not skip lessons — unless they had an exam to prepare for.
“I could review with you,” Luna offered, and pretended not to notice the way Kim’s brow furrowed.
“That’s alright, thanks. Just tell him I’m not well. He’ll believe whatever you say, you know.”
Now it was Luna’s turn to frown. She didn’t understand what Kim meant, but she didn’t get to ask because Kim was already leaving.
Luna finished her meal alone, still puzzling over Kim’s comment, and wandered to Charms by herself. She apologised to Flitwick for Kim’s absence, and promised to take notes for two. Flitwick readily accepted her vague excuse, and this only puzzled Luna more. How had Kim known that Flitwick would not press her?
She was distracted throughout class, but her notes were no less for it. She was not sure that they would help Kim — no one ever asked to borrow Luna’s colourful, pictographic notes — but Luna would not mind explaining them.
After Charms, Luna had a free period, while the Gryffindors took their Charms lesson. She passed Ginny and Neville outside Flitwick’s classroom door and smiled. Ginny grinned back, which worried Luna. It was not the sort of grin that suggested Ginny was truly in a better mood; it was Ginny’s mischievous grin.
Luna waited until she was in the library to check the Galleon in her pocket. She had not noticed it grow warm during her Charms lesson, but it must have, for there was a new date and time inscribed where the identification number would be. Tonight, an hour before Muggle Studies.
Whatever Ginny had planned would get them all into trouble, certainly, but Luna at least knew that it would be fun, and fun was in such short supply these days.
There was plenty of time between now and then, so Luna set about working on their personalised field guides for Herbology. She had started adding to it, not just for Herbology, but also for Care of Magical Creatures. Hagrid was sweet, but Luna did not find him an adept professor. She could appreciate the practicality of his lessons, at least, but had started recording what she learned from their field experiments into her Herbology project. She enjoyed this sort of work, collecting information and organising it. And decorating it.
Professor Flitwick had suggested a career studying magical plants and animals, doing field work, exploring, traveling and notetaking, making discoveries. Luna liked the idea of it, but the way he had presented it sounded tedious. He had mentioned the Ministry and paperwork, almost as if he had been trying to put her off from the job. He had even suggested that she spend her summer reaching out to people at the Ministry to try some job-shadowing, but Luna had a hard time finding people in the Ministry that were not involved with either the Death Eaters, the Rotfang Conspiracy, or the Heliopath Army.
Was it not enough to simply wander?
Luna had never been good at purpose. It was one of the many things she had always admired about Ginny. Ginny had always known who she was and what she wanted. Luna, for all her appearances of self-assurance, wondered and doubted far more than anyone knew.
Luna finished her note about Fire Crabs in preparation for tomorrow’s lesson and waited for the ink to dry. She swung her legs back and forth and stared out of the large window. Neither of her parents had ever made a living on the things they were passionate about. They did things that were uninteresting to fund their curiosities. She wondered if she would end up doing the same.
With a sigh, Luna closed her field guide and headed down to the Great Hall for dinner. Again, she ate alone, but she watched Ginny talk with one of the girls from her dorm. Ginny’s smile was wide but empty, and she tapped her fork anxiously against her plate.
Neville sat alone, picking at his food, and Seamus and Lavender sat together, but they had more interest in the professors’ table than in each other.
Luna shook her head. Gryffindors were always so obvious. If the Carrows were even a little bit smarter, they might have known to be suspicious.
Neville left dinner first, and after an exact count of thirty, Ginny followed. The rest of the D.A. made their way out of the Great Hall in staggered exits. Some relied on a count of their own choosing. Some relied on waiting until a certain number of people had exited before they made their way to the seventh floor.
If Umbridge had taught them anything, it was how to avoid getting caught.
Luna waited until Michael Corner loudly announced that he was going to check on Padma, and trailed after him at her usual aimless pace. When he headed for the hospital wing, Luna went all the way back to Ravenclaw Tower, but instead of climbing the stairs, she slipped down another corridor to the Room of Requirement.
The Room no longer looked as it had for D.A. meetings. In fact, Luna thought it looked rather like a proper classroom. There were even stacks of reference books on some of the desks.
“I thought if anyone did walk in on us, it would look like we were studying,” Neville said, when he saw Luna’s curious glance.
She hummed thoughtfully. “You should ask it not to let anyone walk in on us.”
Neville looked surprised, then frowned and sank into one of the desks. He drummed his fingers thoughtfully.
Luna always appreciated the way Neville took her ideas seriously, rather than laughed at them, or dismissed them instantly, the way so many of her peers and professors did.
Padma and Parvati returned from the hospital wing with Michael, and a small crowd surrounded them, asking if they were alright. Hannah and Susan were notable outliers, clustered by themselves and whispering quietly. Ginny, too, stood alone, trying to count heads, and another girl in a green headscarf, someone Luna had not spoken to since those early days of the D.A., sat by herself.
Luna slipped into the desk beside Atalanta Shafiq. She smiled pleasantly.
“Hello. It’s Atalanta, isn’t it?”
The girl stared at her with large brown eyes. Luna thought she was in fourth year, the same Dennis Creevey would have been in.
“You’re Luna.”
Luna’s smile widened. “How did you know?”
“Everyone knows you. You’re one of the people who went to the Ministry with Potter two summers ago.”
“Oh, you mean Pickled Herring.”
Atalanta stared at Luna as if she had lost her mind, a look Luna was used to, though she hadn’t seen it in a while. She hadn’t spent much time with new people recently.
“You’re friends with Hugh, aren’t you?” Luna asked her.
Atalanta nodded. “I know you visit him. How is he?”
“Oh — he’s well. Don’t you see him yourself?”
The girl turned to stare straight ahead. Her face was hard and her voice tight. “He asked me to stop coming. As if everyone doesn’t already know we’re friends — as if he has anyone else to bring him notes —” She broke off abruptly and her nostrils flared. “Everyone knows we were friends with the Creeveys anyway. My lineage doesn’t protect me as much as he thinks it does.”
“It sounds like he cares about you.” Luna hummed. “But you seem like someone who can take care of yourself. It’s okay for both of those things to be true, you know.”
Atalanta did not say anything. Luna appreciated the way the girl considered her words. It was like watching someone put together a puzzle, and Luna loved puzzles.
The door opened and closed one last time for Pearl Lais and Ginny announced, “I think that’s everyone. Let’s get started.”
All conversations ceased as she spoke. Ginny commanded a room with more ease than Harry had. Luna could not help but smile dreamily.
“So as you all know, tonight we have an exam for Muggle Studies.”
“I won’t take it,” Zacharias Smith announced loudly.
“And we fully plan to resume our protest,” Parvati added, voice defiant. Padma looked less confident, but she nodded when Parvati looked at her.
“Standing outside the Muggle Studies classroom is great,” Neville said, “but if we could do something more coordinated and subversive, we might be able to get more students on our side, and you wouldn’t have to go to detention.”
Padma raised an eyebrow. “You have something planned that won’t get us in trouble?”
“As long as we don’t get caught,” Ginny grinned. “I heard Snape threatened to take your Prefect badge. Your protest has been great, but it’s not worth that. We need people like you in charge as much as possible. Let me show you what we have in mind. It’s so easy, even Neville could do it.”
Neville did not look upset by the remark in the least, and pulled a stack of loose parchment from the desk at the front of the classroom. He began passing it out.
“It’s partly a Muggle-trick,” he said, “so it’s perfect for Muggle Studies.”
“There’s a bit of Charm, of course,” Ginny said, “to make it more interesting.”
Ginny and Neville explained the procedure of the prank to the members of Dumbledore’s Army. Everyone had several sheets to practice with, but Luna took to it right away. She found it a rather endearing bit of spellwork, but she knew that Alecto Carrow would hate it. Still, it was a harmless and funny prank. Even if they did get caught, the punishment couldn’t be too severe.
As Luna finished folding her third sheet of parchment, just for something to do with her hands, Ginny slid into the desk next to her.
“Hey,” she said, “I have a special job for you.”
Luna looked up from her parchment as Ginny pressed a small bottle into her hands.
“Neville got that from Herbology today. Can you smear it into Carrow’s book before the exam?”
Luna held up the colourless vial. “Should I wear dragonhide gloves?”
“No, it has to be ingested. Just the corners of the pages will do.”
“How will I get the book?”
“Just ask her for it. Say you need to check your notes or something. She’ll believe whatever you tell her.”
Luna stared into Ginny’s deep brown eyes. “Why?”
“You have an honest face. If I ask, she’ll know something’s up.”
Luna wasn’t sure what it meant that she had an, “honest face,” but it was the nicest compliment Ginny had given her all year, so she took it and pressed it into her memory like she pressed flowers into her field guide.
“I should go now, then,” she said. “So I’ll have time.”
“Don’t worry about getting caught,” Ginny said. “I’ve got something else planned and she’ll probably single me out for the whole thing.”
Luna didn’t mean to smile, but she did. “I would be honoured to have detention with you,” and she punctuated her statement with a curtsy. Ginny laughed, and it made whatever punishments Luna might receive for smearing poison into Alecto Carrow’s book worth it.
As Ginny had predicted, Professor Carrow did not suspect anything was amiss when Luna arrived at her office early and asked to check her notes against the enormous tome that she read out of during their lessons. She muttered something about Ravenclaws and perfectionism, then left Luna at a desk with her notes and the book.
Carefully, Luna dabbed some of the poison onto her finger and smeared it onto the upper right corners of each page. She pretended to skim some of the pages, and even made a few marks into her own notes to sell the lie, but she wondered if she even needed to. Professor Carrow hardly paid her any mind.
When she had finished, she thanked Professor Carrow, and waited until she was alone in the hallway to wipe her hands clean.
All students were required to take Muggle Studies, and the curriculum was entirely new, so everyone, from first year to seventh, took it together in the Great Hall three evenings a week. Luna found it slightly more entertaining than History of Magic, because while Professor Carrow could drone on much like Professor Binns, Carrow at least took questions, and Luna loved when her friends asked questions.
In their very first class, Neville had challenged every line of Professor Carrow’s reading. She had snappishly asked for his lineage not twenty minutes into class. With a wide grin, Neville had said, “Longbottom and Fawley.”
The other day, Ginny had asked Professor Carrow why they weren’t going to evaluate the Carrow family tree the way they had the Bones family. Professor Carrow had turned red and Luna had expected her to hex Ginny then and there.
Luna had not asked any questions yet, though she had, at one point, raised her hand to point out that it was unfair to accuse Muggles of being liars and cheats when Thicknesse was a continuation of Scrimgeour’s evil plot to bring down the Ministry through the horrors of gum disease. The other students had laughed, and Professor Carrow had given her a condescending smile.
“How could the Ministry allow such plots to happen right under their nose?” Professor Carrow had asked with a sickly smile.
“Same way they allowed Death Eaters to infiltrate and Voldemort to take over,” Neville had said loudly, and he’d gotten a week of detention.
The dining tables were removed from the Great Hall each night of Muggle Studies and were replaced with rows of desks. Students sat by year and by house, so Luna took a seat near the back of one of the Ravenclaw aisles. She thought it was a good thing that the D.A. was largely composed of upper-years. Professor Carrow would be less likely to notice them folding up their exams.
The Great Hall was quiet as students worked on their exams. Quills scratched against parchment and occasionally Luna heard the sound of a page turning as Professor Carrow licked her finger and turned the page of her heavy tome.
As she folded up her exam just like they had practiced in the Room of Requirement, Luna watched Professor Carrow closely. The woman coughed after five pages and reached for her tea. After ten pages, she rubbed her throat and finished her drink. By the fifteenth page, her cheeks were already flushed purple and she looked uncomfortable.
“Professor!” Ginny shouted. She didn’t need to shout, since the hall was as silent as O.W.L.s had been, but as her voice echoed, every head turned to her.
She had her hand stretched as high as she could and she bounced anxiously. “Professor!”
Professor Carrow stood from her desk and frowned down at Ginny. “This is an exam, girl. Be quiet.”
“It’s an emergency, Professor. Can I go? I’ll only be a minute.”
Professor Carrow’s mouth lifted in a sneer. “No.”
“Please, Professor? I mean, I’ll use my exam if I have to, but —”
Laughter rippled across the hall and Ginny grinned.
“Make it quick!” Carrow snapped at her, and Ginny sprinted from the hall.
She really was gone only a minute — both Luna and Professor Carrow counted — and Luna wondered what she possibly could have accomplished during that time.
Ginny maintained an appearance of studiousness as she returned to her exam, and Professor Carrow returned to her book. She rubbed her throat again and looked at her empty tea cup. She snapped her fingers impatiently. A house-elf appeared with a pop and poured her a fresh cup, then vanished just as quickly.
Luna forgot all about the clusters of parchment that decorated her desk. Her focus was wholly on Professor Carrow as the woman inspected the cup of tea. She sniffed it, tapped her wand against it, took a small sip, and seemed satisfied. She finished the cup and went back to her book.
Luna kept watching, and it was another seven pages before Professor Carrow licked her finger and paused. She looked at her hand, at the book, and then directly at Luna. Luna tried to shrink into her seat.
Carrow got to her feet and started down the aisle of Ravenclaw desks with a look of fury that might have cowed a dragon. Luna, however, was spared immediate consequences by a squeak that began on the Gryffindor side of the room, followed closely by a squeak from the Hufflepuff aisle.
Hastily, Luna Animated the collection of parchment mice that she had so carefully constructed during the exam. They joined the chorus of mice that now filled the hall, leaping off of desks and scampering towards Professor Carrow.
Luna didn’t think Professor Carrow was a woman who feared mice, but it at least startled her, and it certainly upset several of the other students, who screamed as the parchment creations scurried over their feet and onto their desks. Students leapt up onto chairs and desks, and the entire hall descended into chaos.
It was impossible to tell, as Ginny and Neville had probably planned, where the mice had come from. Carrow pointed her wand at the ones nearest to her, and they went up in flames, but they were quickly replaced with more. Some tried to climb her skirt while others scampered across the room, nibbling on exams and tearing every piece of parchment to shreds.
“Everyone out!” Carrow snapped, crushing one of the mice under her heel. “Orderly!” she added as a few of the more skittish students bolted for the door.
But even those that ran reached a wall of students who had, for some reason, stalled in the doorway of the Great Hall.
“What now?” Carrow elbowed her way to the front, and Luna stood on her tiptoes to peer over Draco Malfoy’s shoulder. She saw a message painted on the floor of the entrance hall in bright red, impossible to miss.
DUMBLEDORE’S ARMY: NOW RECRUITING
Professor Carrow tried to vanish the mess, but it sparked with fireworks and she leapt backwards. A pair of first years stared in awe. A few upper years laughed.
“Weasley!” Carrow snapped, and a few of the older students waited for the inevitable joke of, “Which one?” before realising that Ginny was the only Weasley left at Hogwarts.
Ginny leaned against the pillar that framed the door into the Great Hall. She smiled at Carrow. “Yes, Professor?”
Professor Carrow lifted her wand. “You’ll get more than detention, brat —”
“Say, Professor,” Ginny said, “you’ve got a little something on your —” Ginny gestured to her face, then paused and gestured to Carrow’s hands, “well — everywhere.”
Professor Carrow looked down at her hands, now bright purple.
“That looks like Venomous Tentacula poison,” said Neville. “You ought to be careful around the greenhouses, Professor.”
Carrow whipped around and aimed her wand at Neville, then searched the crowd for Luna. “You,” she snapped.
Luna raised her eyebrows.
“What’s your name?”
“Lovegood,” Luna said, before it had even occurred to her to lie.
Carrow ran her tongue across her teeth. “Lovegood? Your father runs The Quibbler?”
“Er — yes, Professor.”
“You and Weasley, to the Headmaster Snape’s office immediately.”
Luna started for the stairs, but Ginny folded her arms over her chest and refused to move.
“Weasley!”
“Snape isn’t Headmaster.”
“I’ve had just about enough of you. Pureblooded or not —”
“Last week you called me a blood traitor, but this week you’re suddenly all concerned with —”
“Imperio.”
Luna watched, horrified, as Ginny’s posture relaxed and her dark eyes widened.
“Stop!” Luna cried, which, futile as it was, at least provided cover as Neville drew his wand.
“Stupefy!” Neville shouted, and Professor Carrow fell backwards, sprawled over Ginny’s message on the floor.
A few of the students cheered and footsteps thundered down the stairs.
Amycus Carrow and Argus Filch shoved their way through the crowd of students. They took in the mess of paint on the floor, the unconscious and purple professor, and Neville with his wand drawn.
“What did you do, you filthy brat!” Amycus snarled.
“She was only Stunned,” Seamus Finnigan shouted. “Seemed fair since she was using a bloody Unforgivable!”
“Another week of detention then?” Neville asked, with more bravery than Luna thought anyone should have, considering how many detentions had landed students in the infirmary.
“No, I think your punishment should be a bit more public and swift —”
“Professor?” Malfoy interrupted. He grabbed Luna’s arm and pulled her forward. His Head Boy badge glinted in the candlelight. “Professor Carrow was just about to take Lovegood and Weasley up to the Headmaster’s office. Shall I help you escort them?”
Amycus Carrow did not do well with being interrupted. It was a challenge for him to hold so many thoughts in his head at once.
“Lovegood and Weasley?”
“Yes, sir. They’re responsible for this mess, too. Pansy can help Professor Carrow, here, and I’ll help you get this lot to Professor Snape.”
Luna did not fight Malfoy’s tight grip on her arm as he took her to Snape’s office, not the way Ginny pushed and pulled on Amycus as he dragged her up the stairs. Neville, too, was more docile in Filch’s grip, and he eyed Malfoy suspiciously.
Carrow announced the password, “Asphodel,” and the gargoyle that guarded the stairs to the Headmaster’s office parted with ease.
Luna was so rarely angry. Anger was a concept, something she witnessed in others, and maybe glimpsed in herself the way she could glimpse the edge of the Black Lake on a clear day. She did not feel true anger very often, but as she was pulled up to the Headmaster’s office, it rose in her chest with each step.
It was horribly unfair of Hogwarts, who had denied Umbridge access to the Headmaster’s office, to allow Snape control over it, when Snape was the very one who had killed Dumbledore.
Luna tried to swallow down her anger, but it refused to budge. She hated Hogwarts.
Carrow pounded his fist on the heavy oak door at the top of the stairs and pushed it open.
The Headmaster’s office was different from what Luna remembered. She’d only seen it once before, but she had adored it. There had been so many trinkets bobbing and whizzing about; it had been full of noise and life. It had reminded her of her mother’s office.
Now, however, it was cold and empty, with nothing but a Pensieve in a corner and a desk stacked with parchment. Fawkes’ perch remained, but was empty, and behind the Headmaster’s desk were the frames of all the previous Headmasters, including Dumbledore, fast asleep. She looked away, and settled on Snape’s face. As much as she disliked Snape, looking at him hurt less than looking at Dumbledore’s portrait.
Snape, seated at the Headmaster’s desk, kept his eyes on what looked to Luna like a letter.
“No, please, come right in,” he drawled. “I’m not busy or anything.”
“These students cursed Alecto,” Amycus said. “Stunned her right in the entrance hall.”
“They had nothing to do with it!” Neville snapped. “I Stunned her because she used an Unforgivable on Ginny! It was just me!”
With an eerie amount of care, Snape set the letter aside and finally looked at the group that had invaded his office. His face had no more displeasure than it usually did as he looked at each of them.
“Then give Longbottom a detention,” he finally said to Carrow. “Five feet of lines reading, ‘I will not hex my professors’ ought to do it.”
Luna could not tell if Snape was serious. Amycus appeared to be having the same problem. His jaw worked fruitlessly before he finally sputtered, “That’s it?”
Snape stood. “What would you like me to do? Expel him and send him back to his Dumbledore-fanatic parents? You’re in charge of discipline, Carrow. So discipline them. Can’t you control a few children?” He opened a cabinet and pulled out a cloak. “I have business off of the grounds tonight. I expect that this will be dealt with by the time I return.”
Snape held the door open for them, and Carrow reluctantly led them back down to the corridor. Snape swept past them, dark cloak billowing the way it had as he had paced the aisles during his Potions lessons, and disappeared down the stairs.
Carrow watched him go, a hard look on his face. “Are the dungeons ready, Filch?”
“Oiled the hinges this morning, sir,” Filch said. “Haven’t put the chains back in yet —”
“It’ll do for now.”
Ginny’s thrashing did not hinder Carrow in the slightest as he, Filch, and Malfoy took the three of them downstairs into the dungeons. Their wands were set on a nearby shelf, tauntingly visible but well out of reach, and then the three were left alone until Carrow could come up with something more creative.
“Did you see it?” Neville’s voice was steady, and he leaned almost comfortably against the stone wall.
The iron-wrought bars rattled as Ginny kicked them, but they did not budge. “Of course I saw it. We ought to go for it now, while Snape’s gone.”
Luna eyed a trickle of water that slid from the ceiling and into a small puddle on the floor. She wondered if it came from the Black Lake or a leaky pipe. “What did you notice?” she asked.
“The Sword of Godric Gryffindor,” Ginny said. “Didn’t you see it hanging under Dumbledore’s portrait?”
“Oh. Is it important?”
“Dumbledore left it to Harry,” Neville said. “He needs it. I don’t know how we could get it to him, though.”
“I can talk to him,” Ginny said. “If we could just get out of here —” She kicked again, but the bars did not budge under her assault.
“We aren’t getting out of here.” Neville retrieved a worn piece of parchment and a golden feather from his pocket. He searched for a dry spot on the floor and unfolded the old parchment. “But we can make a plan. Halloween would be good, when everyone’s at the feast.”
Ginny gave the bars one more kick for good measure, then joined Neville on the floor.
Neville pressed the tip of the feather to the parchment like a quill and said, “I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.”

Ginny was forced to scrub the entrance hall clean until there was no trace of her graffiti, and students could see their reflection in the polished floor. It took her the better part of three full weeks and her hands were blistered and cracked when she was finished.
Luna spent every night reading out loud from Alecto Carrow’s horrible book, and if she faltered or hesitated in any way, she earned a welt and had to start over. It went on for two weeks.
Neville was left in the dungeons for a week, and did not appear for lessons nor meals. He said nothing about what happened to him, but he flinched when Seamus clapped him on the shoulder at his first meal back.
It wasn’t even an hour later that Susan approached Neville and asked what the revenge plan was. Neville told her to keep her head down until the Halloween feast.
To an outsider, it might have appeared that the Carrows had won. Muggle Studies lessons passed without incident. There were small protests in Dark Arts, but nothing more dramatic than civil disobedience. It was quiet at Hogwarts, until Halloween.
They started small. Seamus and Parvati slipped some of the Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes Exploding Whizz-Bangs into the eggs at breakfast with a Switching Spell. After the chaos of breakfast, Alecto Carrow promised to hold the entire school for an extra hour of Muggle Studies that evening if no one confessed or gave up the perpetrator.
No one said a word.
Lavender took the leaflets from the Daily Prophet with Harry’s face and the bounty and modified them. Instead of “Undesirable No 1” the leaflet read, “Desirable Chosen 1” which was enough of a change to get their point across. She lamented that Dean could have done better, but the rest of the D.A. praised her work.
The leaflets were blown up to twice their size and pasted into windows all across the castle, with the help of everyone in the D.A. Every common room, from Gryffindor to Slytherin, was plastered with Harry’s face.
By lunch, the Carrows were scorching walls left and right, and Atalanta Shafiq told everyone that the Carrows had accidentally blasted a hole through the Slytherin Common room right into the Black Lake and flooded the dormitories.
Neville’s job was an unfortunate one, but he took it with grace. He waited until lunch was nearly over, then shouted at Crabbe and asked, “I know you said you’re a pureblood, but isn’t there a bit of troll in your tree? Was it on your mother or father’s side?”
Crabbe threw a hex that sent Neville flying five feet backwards and when he got up, he was puking up something slimy. Hannah escorted him to the hospital wing.
Ginny’s role for the day revolved around being as suspicious as possible without getting into real trouble. She ducked through hidden corridors. She paused to fiddle with her bag or her shoes. Luna stayed close with her for most of it, until after Transfiguration, they ducked out of Amycus’ careful watch by slipping into Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom.
Demelza was waiting for them. “Ready?” she asked.
Ginny nodded and plucked out a strand of her hair.
Luna left the bathroom with Demelza, but Amycus Carrow saw exactly what he expected to see: Luna Lovegood and Ginny Weasley heading down to the Halloween feast.
Luna watched Demelza sit next to Helen Donoghue and engage Helen as easily as if she really were Ginny. Amycus stood at the door, eyes intent on Ginny. Luna could not help but smile, despite her trepidation at her own task.
She ate slowly, unsure how full her stomach ought to be. She looked at the professors and bit her tongue when she noticed that Snape was missing. Their plan hinged on Snape being out of his office.
Well, it was too late for them to change course now. Neville was waiting for her in the hospital wing, and Ginny was probably already hiding out by the Headmaster’s office.
Luna took a deep breath, pulled the bright yellow half of a Fainting Fancy from her pocket, and swallowed.
She woke with a headache in a corridor not far from the hospital wing with Neville and Michael Corner leaning over her. She licked her lips and tried to swallow down the spiced pepper flavour that seemed stuck to her tongue. She decided that she didn’t care for the second half of those Fainting Fancies.
“Are you alright?” Michael asked her.
Luna sat up and rubbed her throbbing head. “I fell,” she said.
“I tried to catch you. You should have warned me when you were going to do it.”
“It’s alright,” Neville said.
Luna gagged. His breath smelled like Porlock dung.
“You’d better get back to the feast,” Neville told Michael. “The less time you’re with us, the better it’ll look for you.”
“Are you alright?” Luna asked Neville as Michael hurried back to the Great Hall.
Neville grimaced. “I was hoping for boils. Madam Pomfrey says I’ll be tasting acid for a week, but she was at least able to stop the puking, so we can go ahead with the plan. Everything seems to be going well so far.”
“Oh… there is one thing…”
Luna told him that she had not seen Snape at the feast. Neville checked the map while they walked.
“I don’t see him at all,” Neville frowned. He ran his finger across the Marauder’s Map. “Oh — he’s just arrived at the gates. What do you think he left for?”
“Perhaps he’s joined a league of vampires. Halloween is a special holiday for them.”
“Then I guess we’d better hurry up before he finds us and drinks our blood.” Neville squinted at the map. “You catch up with Ginny. I have an idea. Peeves is just around the corner and if he can stall…”
Neville was still talking as he disappeared behind a tapestry of Mordicus Egg cooking over an open fire. Luna paused to watch the heavy tapestry resettle in Neville’s wake. The threads of the flames seemed alive as they rippled back and forth, until finally the tapestry stilled.
She skipped on ahead to the gargoyle at the end of the corridor. She spun around once in a circle, and did not see Ginny. So she spun again, and this time Ginny stepped out from behind a suit of armor.
“How’s Demelza doing?” Ginny asked.
“She’s very good at being you,” Luna said, then said, “Asphodel,” to the statue. It stepped aside easily and Luna hummed. “I really thought he would have changed it.”
“It’s a good thing he didn’t. Where’s Neville?”
“He said to go on without him.”
Ginny was already halfway up the stairs. “Alohomora,” she said, and the lock on the office door clicked open. She shoved the heavy door with her shoulder.
Ginny ran in for the sword, and Luna listened at the door. While she listened, her eyes roved over the portraits. Their oily eyes were fixed on Ginny as she lifted the Sword of Godric Gryffindor from its display.
“Breaking and entering!” one portrait shouted. “In the Headmaster’s office!”
“Put that sword back, child,” Dilys Derwent said in a kinder voice. “I’m sure you mean well, but —”
“Thievery!” Phineas Nigellus Black shrieked at her. “Unheard of! In my time —”
“Treachery!” one woman with a thick wand shouted.
“You’re the traitors!” Ginny shouted back at them. “Letting Snape in here — helping him — and after what he did to Dumbledore!”
She broke off and stared at Dumbledore’s portrait. It’s gold frame glistened, and the impression of Dumbledore stared back at her, as still and as unmoving as any Muggle portrait.
Luna abandoned her post at the door and came to Ginny’s side. She stared at Dumbledore’s portrait and felt her heart grow heavy, the way it did each time she passed her mother’s office in the basement of their family home.
“Ginny,” she whispered, “we should go. You can’t argue with what’s been done.”
“It isn’t fair.” Ginny turned her fierce glare on all the portraits, then back onto Dumbledore’s still portrait. “You know what the sword is for, what it can do. Tell them.”
The portrait did not so much as blink at her.
“Ginny.” Luna tugged on her arm.
Ginny’s lower lip trembled, and she turned away from Dumbledore’s portrait. Luna pulled her towards the door, but froze on the first step.
Ginny heard it too — footsteps coming up for them.
They backed into the office, but there was nowhere to go, nowhere to run as Snape and the Carrows burst into the office. Ginny brandished the sword as she might a wand for a duel. Luna did not have time to reach for her wand as Amycus Carrow thrust Neville at her. He fell into her and she staggered under his weight.
“You two,” Alecto Carrow sneered, “are supposed to be in the hospital wing.”
“Oh, but I feel much better,” Luna said. Neville only groaned.
“How’d you find us?” Ginny snapped.
“Hogwarts is a castle filled with portraits, Miss Weasley. I think you can figure out the rest.” Snape waved his wand and Ginny jumped as if the sword had burned her. It clattered to the ground and she clutched her hand to her chest.
“I thought,” Snape drawled, “I asked you two to control these children.”
“We did —” Amycus protested. “We have — she was just in the Hall, I swear.”
“I think a detention in the Forbidden Forest ought to teach them a lesson or two. Every night for the next week. From sundown to midnight.”
Luna tipped her head to one side. “But —”
Ginny squeezed her wrist and she stopped talking.
But that meant they would be with Hagrid instead of at Muggle Studies lessons. She wondered if Snape just didn’t realise when Muggle Studies lessons were. Did he think they were during normal lesson hours?
“And what if they try it again?” the Carrows asked.
Snape removed his cloak and pulled out a smudged piece of parchment from his pocket. “I expect you’ll prevent them from trying again.” He glanced at the sword on the floor. “I’ll have it removed from Hogwarts, then this will no longer be a problem.”
As he tucked the parchment into a book on his desk, Luna was certain that the smudge of ink was actually a small black pawprint. She supposed if Snape was a vampire, he must have a familiar by now.
Snape took a seat at his desk and surveyed the small crowd in his office. “Well? Is there a reason you’re all still here?”
The Carrows shoved Ginny towards the door, and Luna helped Neville limp down the stairs.
“Yes, I know,” she heard Snape say as the door closed. “I can have a duplicate ready in days.”
And as the latch on the door clicked, Luna thought that she heard the familiar rumble of Dumbledore’s voice.
—————————— ✶✶✶ ——————————
It was midnight, but no one was keen on heading back to the castle just yet. Ginny sat down in the grass and leaned against one of the trees on the edge of the forest, still in view of Hagrid’s hut, but away from where Neville was helping Hagrid pick Moondew for Madam Rosmerta’s Butterbeer.
Luna crouched down beside her.
“Do you think the Carrows will come and collect us?” Ginny asked. “Or could we stay out here all night?”
Luna ran her hand over the trunk of the tree. She loved the transition from the soft moss to the rough bark and back again.
“It’s just so empty in the common room,” Ginny said. “Is it like that in Ravenclaw?”
Luna crossed her legs and folded her hands in her lap. She thought for a moment. “A bit. Terry Boot never came back. Mandy checks for his name in the paper every day. Anthony Goldstein wasn’t a Muggle-born, but his family left for Canada after Dumbledore’s funeral, and they don’t plan to come back any time soon.” She plucked a small dandelion flower from the grass by her knee. “I expect it’s worst in Hufflepuff.”
Ginny folded her arms over her chest and looked up at the stars over Hagrid’s hut. “I miss him, Luna. I miss him so much, but when we talk it’s like he isn’t there. And I — I know you probably don’t want to hear it — I’m sorry — but I don’t know that I have anyone else —”
Luna reached for another dandelion and folded the stems into the beginning of a flower chain. “I will never take half of you,” Luna said, “and I don’t believe that you are one to give halves.”
Ginny’s laugh was sad. It made Luna’s chest ache. She leaned against Ginny and continued working on her flower chain.
They sat in silence, until nearly two, when Hagrid insisted they return to their bunks.
“I’ll walk yeh ter the castle,” he said, “but don’ let Filch catch you on your way up.”
Neville waved the map. “We’ll be alright. As long as any portraits don’t get involved.”
Luna tied off the flower chain into a crown and stood. She spun in a circle and dropped the circlet on Ginny’s head. “Up we go,” she said, holding her hand out to Ginny.
Ginny took it. “Thanks, Luna.”
Luna smiled. She pulled Ginny along and hurried to catch up with Neville. She took his hand as well.
Luna hated Hogwarts, and she had no desire to go back behind those high stone walls, but at least she did not have to go alone. At least she could go with friends.
