On the topic of How Do You Handle XYZ Comment, I've always wondered how you handle terrible responses on your toh takes. Like I know the toh fandom doesn't lack piss on the poor reading comprehension and they also really enjoy wildly out of touch takes, but I've never seen any comments on your princess luz stuff of that nature. I'm sure they must be there but maybe I'm too early? But anyway, how do you tend to deal with the "acktually shipping luz and Hunter is incest" and the "ur not a real lesbian because putting amity in a poly ship is lesbian erasure" and the "as a white person kinda sus you make the poc woman an empress" kind of responses? Ones that are technically not hate and maybe if you squint could be from people who aren't inherently trying to do bad but just lack the maturity needed to engage with the internet at large?

this ask made me giggle. honestly, i haven't received as much pushback as you might expect! way less pushback than i expected. in the princess AU, i've gotten a LOT more "this is actually too grotesque for me to stomach" comments than "this is problematic" comments, which is fine. horror-thriller isn't for everyone, those comments do not upset me.

i have had a Few run-ins with bad faith people, whom i mostly block. there's one prolific commenter in toh tumblr fandom who would repeatedly write angry essays on my humor meta posts -- essays that were all about how belos is too evil to be sympathetic and/or about how hunter is a soft gentle boy who shouldn't be jokingly referred to as evil. then they'd go "i can't help my active and conscious decision to type a bunch of rude fucking words and then my active and conscious decision to send those rude fucking words because i'm autistic :(((" around the fourth or fifth time this happened, i was fucking done with that nonsense and finally blocked them. shoulda done it after the first comment tbh!! no more autism exceptions.

as for the rest of it, my main management strategy is to simply.... preempt the bad faith comments?

i had a LOT more unpleasant and conflict-filled fandom experiences when i was in the raven cycle fandom. that was my first exposure to "you can't ship multi-gender polycules if anyone involved is gay" and "queerplatonic het relationships are just heteronormativity shipping that you're trying to get away with." having dealt with those takes before, i've found a few different ways to disarm bad faith readers before they get started.

first is to be super open and honest about my interests. i talk about what i find compelling in different relationships All The Damn Time. it's really hard for anyone to accuse me of only wanting hunter to fuck amity if they've seen, like.... anything i've said about hunter and amity.

same with hunter and luz. the only negative reactions i've really gotten to how they're written in the princess AU is like.... two people being squicked by camila thinking they're romantically involved. i REALLY expected more pushback on the touchyfeely bed sharing stuff, but from what i remember, there's never been Any....? not even from people who consider them siblings.

i expected a lot of pushback on how mean hunter and amity are to each other, since it's taken So much farther than the canon. but it turns out that there's a very large overlap between people who like dark horror AUs and people who like hunter and amity murdering each other. (in a fluffy fic i don't think this characterization would fly Nearly as easily.)

i find that being funny really disarms people, too. when you look at any of my toh meta posts that could be controversial, they're basically all funny. people are a lot more willing to listen to what you have to say if you make them laugh, and it's harder for them to get angry at you.

and then the last thing is that i think i'm in sort of a privileged position in toh fandom. i've written a lot of controversial subjects and relationships and characterizations.... but i've also written some WILDLY popular mainstream fic. and people who like the mainstream fic don't really want to beef with me about differing niche opinions, bc there's a level of respect there. which they might not have for a writer they don't like.

but anyway. when things Do happen, i almost always just block and move on. there are so many people here who get what i'm talking about that there's no need for me to try to convert people who don't, you know??

People whose native language has grammatical genders - how’s it going with non-binary people? Are there new word forms that can be used instead? I know that you get latinx etc - any others? Or do you just have to live with gender everywhere?

Hello!! Firstly, I must tell you that your art is adorable! You were one of the first artists I ever found for TGCF and your fengqing dynamic is perfect!

I was wondering if you had any tips for learning Japanese? I've been trying to learn it for a year but I can't get the hang of it 〒▽〒 I try to use your Japanese versions of your comics to help but since I've already read them in English, I don't feel like I'm learning anything...

hmmm im not studying japanese so i don't have specific ressources... if any of my followers have some please feel free to share them in the comments! 💖 it might depend on your level as well.

however, i think that the most important thing about languages is that they're just a tool to communicate with people/access culture/knowledge in another language, so you shouldn't worry too much about the grammar and stuff like that from the beginning.

as someone who has studied many languages, my general tips are:

learn through things that interest you rather than textbook/language apps (ex. manga, anime, etc.) ※ i know that some people say not to do that because a lot of phrases are "unnatural" which is true, but imo if you have awareness about it you will pick up on that really quickly anyways. the point is just to consume a lot of the language;

try to speak/write in that language even if you make mistakes (native speakers really don't care!!): for example, you can tweet something simple or write a simple blog post in japanese often. you can also comment on people's art or fanfics using simple sentences, then you can read other people's comments to learn new ways to express yourself.

consume media that is directed at native speakers (ex. instead of language-learning youtube, you can just watch regular videos from japanese youtubers about topics that interest you), because that way you can learn a lot of natural/casual phrases to use. i'm saying this because language-learning videos will often "simplify" sentences but you won't hear it said like that irl.

as for where i think you should start, i'm assuming you already know the alphabets since you're reading my comics 🫶 in that case, i would encourage you to read a lot more! for example, you can find fengqing comics and fanfics in japanese on twitter 💖 many creators who participated in the 2023 fengqing web event write them!

for me, the most important thing when learning a new language is to be interested in the people who use that language. so just engage with them and learn through whatever contents you find interesting!! 💗

Hello! I had to google translate this again! I really like that instead of a parallel between lives you did a parallel on how people view them. I especially liked the parallel between Lucifer and Michael.

So this is my interpretation from what you said. Lucifer isn't a really good leader, he isn't responsible. He prioritizes himself over his people, he thinks of them as nothing but filthy sinners. Whether that's because of his pride or not. Thats really up to ya'll.

And Lucifer, who's main purpose before he fell, was to spread happiness (I'm actually not sure about this, but people keep saying that this was domain), but now he can't even spread the happiness to the people he cares about, especially to his daughter.

Hello! I'm asking here for any tips or ways or sources I can use for getting some really simply data: the total number of fanworks in certain language... from Wattpad.

I'm really ignorant about scripts, coding and python, so I don't know if this is something your script can do.

For context, I'm asking this because AO3 (as you may know) recently reached 11 million fanworks and almost 130k of them are in Spanish (which is my native language) and I want to compare how many fics are in Wattpad in Spanish as well, since Wattpad is really the main fic site for Spanish communities since a few years.

The problem is, when I just click the category "Fanfic" it says there's only 1.7k of fics and... I don't think that's true????? Too little to be true. And I don't know if like, that's really is (doesn't feel like it), if Wattpad hides certain information or what. So yeah, I want to know if getting the exact amount of Spanish fics in Wattpad is possible and how I could I do that.

Hey! It's not just you. Unfortunately, Wattpad makes it very hard to gather data of this sort, in part because search doesn't work very well.

However, I tried to do a bunch of estimates of this sort back in 2018 & 2019 -- and you may be able to extrapolate some from that. Based on a sample of about 1200 fanworks from Nov 2018, I estimated that there were probably about 5M fanworks on Wattpad that were categorized as Fanfiction by the author -- and maybe closer to 8M fanworks when you included works that were fanfic but had been listed by the author under a different category (e.g., Romance, Humor, or Paranormal).

I never actually posted language stats at the time, but I can share them now. Here were the languages of the sampled fanworks (based on using Google Translate to detect the language in the summary -- because Wattpad authors didn't have to list a language for their fanworks, and many didn't):

(Keep in mind that a bunch of these numbers are pretty small -- only 27 works in Italian.)

As of Nov 2018, it appears that authors were not required to specify a language, and that most did not.

If roughly 16% of the Wattpad works at the time were Spanish, then based on the sample we'd estimate there were ~800K Spanish fanworks categorized as Fanfiction on Wattpad as of late 2018, or ~1.3M Spanish fanworks overall.

I also showed how the overall number of Wattpad fanworks had been growing over time, but I haven't collected any new data since late 2018.
