Cernunnos Deep Dive

Unfortunately not much is known historically about Cernunnos. Scholars seem certain, however, that he was an ancient Gaulish deity.

*In depictions of Cernunnos, his head is notably adorbed with antlers, not horns. This epithet is also the name of the two primary deities of traditional Wicca. It is also shared among many other deities who are depicted with horns.

The name Cernunnos has appeared only once throughout history—on the Pillar of the Boatmen.

Though he is sometimes known as a god of animals or beast, Ceisiwr Serith (or David Fickett-Wilbar) makes the case that although he is depicted on the Gundestrup Cauldron surrounded by animals, only two are looking at Cernunnos, the stag and the dog. Plus there are other deities present on the cauldron.

Cernunnos’ depiction as a “Lord of the Wild” likely comes from his imagery, a man often sitting cross legged and with antlers on his head. This may denote a more spiritual, natural theme for Cernunnos. However, he is not depicted with vegetation or plants

Often depicted wearing a torc, Cernunnos is sometimes considered a god of wealth or fortune. Torcs were known to be a sign of wealth.

He is also seen as a cthonic deity or a psychopomp. Jo Forest makes the case that due to his imagery with snakes—creatures often associated with the underworld—and his relation to the ram due to the ram's horn. Rams were often sacrifices in ancient Indo-European practices.

Cernunnos is likely not a fertility god. This idea may come from his conflation with the Wiccan Horned God, as mentioned earlier.

Cernunnos has been considered to be related to masculinity, but this is also likely due to the conflation with Wicca’s Horned God.

Depictions of Cernunnos with domesticated and prey animals may suggest him being a god of hunting or hunters.

Jess South makes the case further for Cernunnos’ associations with liminality. Between man and animal; hunter and hunted; life and death.

Decided to mount my stag horn fern that’s lived in a pot for years… because of this the shield was pretty small but surprisingly thick, and the root/moss in the pot was so thick I basically had to cut it down to nothing. I just wrapped it on an old piece of fence with a ton of garden wire and it’s holding on pretty well, but it’s leaning forward a ton hung up so gotta fix that. This thing grows FAST.

(My partner is really into animal toy collecting; they particularly like dinosaurs, but exposure to Safari has since got me exposed to their dragon line. Which has some genuinely cool, interesting design!

Anyway, a long-term theme you'll see in this blog is Cool Mounts, quadrupedal Large creatures that can be ridden by creatures of various levels. This one, I imagine, is perfect for a druid or ranger in a forest's hour of need.)

Dazzling creatures of the forest, stag dragons are rarely seen by humanoids, preferring invisibility or the guise of a fey shape to keep themselves hidden. They are herbivores, browsing on high foliage and fast-growing ferns, although they are deliberately careful not to overgraze in any one tree or spot.

Stag dragons are guardians of the local ecology of their region. They monitor the wellbeing of their undergrowth, of the deer they run with, and the many small creatures from insects to songbirds that live in their home. They tend to allow forage and subsistence hunting, understanding humanoids as part of the ecology, but do not permit civilization's encroach.

In times of crisis, stag dragons are known to take valorous and trustworthy heroes as riders, although this agreement typically lasts as long as the danger.

This beautiful creature is clearly draconic in nature, but its graceful legs and branching horns call to mind a noble stag.

Platycerium coronarium is a species of staghorn fern native to Southeast Asia. Staghorn ferns produce two kinds of leaves: foliage leaves which are broad and upright, and spore bearing leaves which are narrow and branch like a stag's horn. When mature, the spore bearing leaf will produce a semi circular or fan shaped lobe that bears the sporangia as seen in this picture.

When I moved into my house in Surry Hills last century, Bert & Peg were my neighbours. A lovely old inner city working class couple who supported both Souths and the ALP and drank Reschs Pilsner.

Bert gave me two small stag horn ferns mounted to broken fence palings. They are both now enormous.

This is a tiny baby fern I’ve taken from one of the giants, I’m going it in memory of my departed neighbours.

Hi! Could I ask for a plant recommendation? A friend of mine has been Going Through It and I think having something to fuss over would help him a lot. That said he's not super into plants (neither am I lmao) so I'm hoping I can get him something relatively tolerant of mistakes while still needing to be checked on every day.

I'm thinking maybe an orchid would work? Or maybe a carnivorous plant? But I really don't know so I thought I'd ask an expert :)

Tbh I’d probably not recommend a carnivorous plant. They can be super easy if you have the right setup, but they do definitely need some extra equipment to keep happy (like high humidity and LOTS of light). That being said, if your person has lots of sunshine, that might be a good option! A humidity dome is a really good option for increasing humidity, which then fixes that problem too.

I do think orchids are actually pretty easy to keep alive and grow. The more challenging part can be getting them to re-flower, and lots of beginners think that the flowers dying means that the plant is dying. So orchids can definitely be a good option, as long as your person knows that the flowers drying out and falling off isn’t a big deal! Getting them to re-flower generally requires daily environmental changes (ie cooler at night, warmer during the day) and a good amount of light.

One plant group that generally likes to be fussed with, but are a little more resilient than others, are Marantas (prayer plants). They like sunshine and don’t like their soil to dry out completely, but they’ll usually bounce back just fine even if their soil dries out if it doesn’t stay dry for too long (and as long as it doesn’t happen too often). I’d definitely go with a Maranta (or Goeppertia) and NOT a Calathea if you go that route. They’re also fun because they move during their circadian rhythm.

Ferns are also easier than most people think IF you have a high humidity environment like a humidity dome. The high humidity makes them much more resilient to drying out more than they would be at room humidity, BUT they are much less tolerant to drying out completely than others. If they’re left completely dry, it is really hard to bring them back, which might be a little hard to stomach for someone already having a tough time. That being said, I think I water my ferns in my humidity boxes like once every few months. Ferns that have smooth broad fronds, like crocodile ferns, stag horn ferns, or birds-nest ferns, are also MUCH more forgiving than traditional frilly ferns with lots of leaflets.

An early Mabon post

Hey everybody ! :) mabon may be a teensy bit away still but the days are passing fast and the day is slowly nearing! I wanted to make an informational and fun post telling some stuff about mabon and what you can do, movies to watch 🧡

What is Mabon?

Mabon is the autumn equinox dated for September 21-24 this year (2020). The autumnal equinox occurs when the sun crosses the equator on its apparent journey southward, and we experience a day and a night that are of equal duration. Up until Mabon, the hours of daylight have been greater than the hours from dusk to dawn. This is the time to look back not just on the past year, but also your life, and to plan for the future. It marks the middle of the harvest, Mabon is a time of rest and celebration, after the hard work of gathering the crops. Warm autumn days are followed by chill nights, as the Old Sun God returns to the embrace of the Goddess. All Sabbats are occasions to express gratitude to the God and Goddess for the blessings in our lives, but Mabon is particularly so, coming at the height of the harvest season.

How to celebrate Mabon

You can start by decorating your altar if you have one with acorns, pinecones, seasonal fruits and nuts, and some of the colored leaves that drop from the trees in your location. Baskets are good things to use and scythes since they are symbols of harvest. As for candles, autumn colors can be used such as reds, yellows, oranges, golds, and browns. If you have a feast, whether solo or with others, include seasonal vegetables like onions, potatoes, carrots and other root vegetables. Spellwork related to protection and security is appropriate now, as are workings for self-confidence, prosperity, harmony and balance. If you are one who struggles with seasonal depression during the fall and winter months, use this time to set an intention for inner peace and strength. You might make and charge a talisman for this purpose, to accompany you through the next two seasons. You can also do things that aren’t related to witchcraft if you feel unmotivated or don’t have the time. Cozy up and watch some appropriately themed movies maybe even some horror or Halloween movies, make some hot chocolate or a good cup of tea with appropriate herbs to settle down and drink, you can even do things like read or make some cool looking pieces of art to either put on your altar, use as decoration, or just because you want to.
