Sonic Prime: "Season 2"

Eight more episodes of Sonic Prime are out! They're labeled as "season 2" despite just being the next eight episodes of the first (and presumably only) season, allowing Netflix to market it as multiple seasons without having to give the cast and crew raises. They love doing that shit to their original cartoons. Ugh.

Anyway! Last time, I gave the show some leeway because it was still finding its legs. This time, though? We're now two thirds of the way through the series, and sadly, I think it's time to accept the truth:

While there are parts I like, a lot of this show... kinda sucks?

This multiverse sucks and Rouge was robbed

Previously, I noted the pattern of each universe spotlighting a different friend of Sonic's (Tails in New Yolk City, Amy in the jungle world, Knuckles in the pirate world) and predicted that, hopefully, Rouge would get her time to shine next. And with 16 episodes left, surely there's time to explore new worlds that are more interesting than the jungle and pirate worlds. Those were just the warm up act. Right?

...Right?

Nope! That's it! There are no more worlds.

This multiverse show where anything is possible really is just about another Eggman-controlled dystopia world, a jungle world, and a pirate world. That's all they came up with! Just those three, and two dead worlds that don't really count - one a featureless wasteland, the other a ghostly echo of the original Green Hill dubbed "Ghost Hill." (Sonic's friends appear here as holograms stuck repeating a single line each. It gets old immediately.)

The jungle and pirate worlds and their inhabitants being so overwhelmingly generic becomes unforgivable the moment you realize this is all we're gonna get. It just leaves me wishing they'd thrown this whole concept out and finally made a normal Sonic cartoon with no twist in its premise. A few of the new takes here are good, particularly Nine as a darker riff on Tails, but so many of them don't feel anything like the fun characters they're supposed to be. They're stock cartoon characters wearing the Sonic casts' skins.

I'll admit my bias is showing, but god, Rouge is REALLY done dirty by this setup. The normal Rouge we see in the first episode is so fun for how briefly she appears, but then in all the other worlds she's reduced to a generic action girl with zero personality. What's her purpose, exactly, when every AU version of Amy is ALSO a straightforward action girl? It drives me absolutely insane that they gave us a PIRATE ROUGE and she doesn't care about treasure. They do nothing with this! How!!!!!!!! She's just never gonna get her turn. It's so obvious that Rouge is only in this show so that they can have another girl, but you could swap her out with another character like Blaze and it'd make no difference.

Speaking of the pirates, though...

The way things play out in the pirate world is so stupid

Previously, with the Paradox Prism shard within reach, Captain Dread Knux was regressing into his old obsessive personality. I'm fine with this. Sonic and Dread both want the shard, they're gonna fight over it. Obvious stuff. But the actual impact it has on the story is maybe the stupidest bit of writing in this entire show so far.

Basically, while fighting a couple of the Eggmen and their robots at sea, Sonic has to briefly run over to the enemy ship to fight them and grab the Paradox Prism shard while Dread and his crew remain back on their ship. Dread goes "Oh my god, look! Sonic's abandoning us! Traitor!" While Sonic is... like 200 feet away. Still in clear view. Fighting the guys who are trying to kill them. Retrieving Dread's beloved treasure for him.

And yet, Dread's crew buys this! And when Sonic runs right back over with the shard in hand, they're all like "HOW DARE YOU BETRAY US" and turn on him.

It's just. What?!

This isn't a huge part of the "season," but I highlight it as maybe the worst moment of the show's character writing. I'm reminded of Thorn Rose's backstory from last time, where she was depicted as suddenly snapping one day when she saw her friends pick one too many berries in the jungle. Sometimes a character just needs to pivot for the story to work, and they aren't really interested in getting there smoothly.

The Chaos Council fucking sucks

I tried so hard to like these guys, but they drag the show down so much.

The choice to have a team of five different Eggmen really just means that Eggman has been split into five one-note characters. Four of them revolve entirely around the most trite, predictable, boomer-ass jokes based on their ages. The teenage one is whiny and just wants to play video games. The young adult one is a vegan hipster who does yoga. The old one is cranky about all the whippersnappers and has a bad back. The baby is a baby. These are jokes that would've been tired if this show aired 20 years ago.

The odd man out is Mister Doctor Eggman, the middle-aged one with a toupee who's the stand-in for regular Eggman. But even he kinda sucks. The other four all being one-note joke characters means that he has to be the straight man of the group, so he's just very dry and serious and plot-focused without any of Eggman's fun eccentricities. He's neither particularly funny nor particularly sinister, which is just about the worst place for an Eggman to be.

He doesn't even have any incompetent robot lackeys to bounce off of, because the unfunny alternate age Eggmen fill the quota for bumbling secondary villains. But also, like... Orbot and Cubot are in this show! They were in the first episode! Where are they? God, I never thought I'd miss them so much...

But, okay. It's not ALL bad.

The highlights

There's a recurring theme here, which is that the best episodes are the ones where Sonic is pitted against a foe who can match his speed and they just let the animation carry it.

The first of the new episodes is mostly about Sonic fighting Shadow, and BOY is their fight fun to watch. Said fight happens because Shadow blames Sonic for shattering the universe and doesn't trust him to fix things. Shadow wants to restore their world, but he refuses to see the various AU counterparts as the same people Sonic once knew, and he doesn't really care what happens to them. Ultimately, though, he begrudgingly accepts that Sonic really is the only one who can hop between dimensions for Plot Reasons, and therefore lets him go try to do things the nice way. He sadly spends most of his time waiting around in the void between worlds, but in the last episode of the batch he and Sonic get to team up against the Chaos Council's forces and it's very cool.

As far as recent interpretations of Shadow go, this is a good one. He's a great foil for Sonic, which just makes me wish he could travel with Sonic to the different worlds. He's cynical and overly pragmatic in his approach, but his points aren't entirely wrong. His anger feels justified. They even let him have some snark! And Ian Hanlin is really great in the role - definitely a contender for Shadow's best voice ever. He just sounds so natural.

The other speedster Sonic fights is Chaos Sonic, the Chaos Council's take on Metal.

He can talk! Deven is basically doing a Jaleel impersonation for him? People are very mixed on this.

The idea behind Chaos Sonic is to turn Sonic's obnoxious smack talk and zingers back around on him, and I don't hate this idea, even if a lot of fans find him annoying compared to Metal Sonic. (Some comparisons have been made to Archie's Shard, but I assume this is a coincidence.) Like the rest of the script, his dialogue certainly isn't anything to write home about, but the fights he gets into with Sonic and co. are so damn fun and dynamic that I have to like him. I also like how expressive his eyes are on his dome screen face, and the animators have a ton of fun with the fact that his torso and head can rotate 360 degrees.

Unfortunately, he's destroyed at the end of his debut episode. I'm praying he gets rebuilt, because this show desperately needs better villains than the Chaos Council.

Again, the animation in Prime is maybe the best animation in any official Sonic media, period. I just wished I liked the characters and worlds enough to be invested in more of the fights. It's hard to care about the dozenth group battle against the generic Eggforcer bots and the baby in his Fisher-Price mech.

The note we end on

After fighting a giant glowing replica of the normal Eggman for... some reason? Episode 16 ends with Sonic and Nine getting into an argument over what to do with the Paradox Prism shards. Sonic wants to restore his original world, but Nine still wants to create a new, better world out of the one that's just an empty wasteland, believing he doesn't belong anywhere else. Nine angrily runs off with the shards, and Sonic is distraught as he realizes that Shadow was seemingly right about how he shouldn't trust Nine.

I kind of like this conflict, mostly because Nine is the standout character of this show. But my main problem is that we don't know what will happen when everything is fixed.

The logical assumption is that the alternate worlds will just... stop existing, right? That must be the idea if Sonic and Nine are treating restoring the original world and creating a new one in the Shatterverse as mutually exclusive options, right? If the Shatterverse disappears, will Nine and the rest all stop existing, too? The show seems unwilling to discuss this possibility, so I'm left not really knowing what the stakes are in this conflict. Nine becomes a whole lot more sympathetic and Sonic becomes a whole lot more monstrous if restoring the world will erase most of this show's cast from existence, but the thought that this could even happen doesn't seem to have crossed Sonic's mind. Sonic seems to want to take his AU friends back to the regular Green Hill - he at least wants to introduce Nine to his normal friends - but like... he can't really do that, can he? They're not gonna have four Tailses running around.

I don't really know what direction this is all headed in. I guess we just have to keep watching, even if I'm past the point of accepting that this show is mostly very mid.

It's just frustrating that everyone else working on this show is clearly giving it their all while the writers at Man of Action phone it in for so much of its runtime. The scripts drag this show down so, so hard. There are moments and episodes I like, but you have to slog through so much mediocrity to get there.

I think they had a good relationship, I also hc Joker was the younger brother who had to stay at home with his dad while his older brother just went away and never came back for him, just leaving him alone with all the mess at home.

And he just had to stick around with his drunken dad.

His mum was also a drunken but at least she cared about him, deeply.

If Joker did have a relationship with his mom, now that I think about it more; (I have to disagree with myself back in May) it would probably be very protective.

Joker drinks his feminine juice thank you very much so he took majority of the abuse in order to protect her. There's no hard feelings between mother/son despite the crappy living situation.

If she’s still alive (omg the possibilities) she would be set for life, a literal queen.

She hasn’t a clue what her son does up in the big city—all she knows is that a nice man drops off a duffel bag each month with money and a handwritten note from her son. She ain’t complaining but it would be nice to see her son..

Joker crafts each letter with a shocking amount of love and care. A completely different man emerges when he writes to his mother and she keeps each one and treasures them dearly.

Her name is the password for many important things in Joker’s operations. He's so far removed from his old life, no one is the wiser. If J dies, there’s even a protocol in place for his mom (and you of course).

Things obviously weren’t easy growing up with a deadbeat father so Joker makes sure his mother is happy now and lives life comfortably.

He can never visit her (duh his scars and he's kinda ashamed of who he's become) but he thinks of her as much as he does his Light. So like everyday.

I can guarantee you Joker killed his father. Moving right along.

Any siblings would no longer matter to Joker. They either deserted him and Mom or they didn’t help fight back when J got fed up for the last time…Joker considers that a sign of weakness. They’re dead to him.

Joker dreams one day that his Light will get to meet his mom (if she's still alive. We don't know how old she is)

He wants the two most important women in his life to know each other. One is from his past, the other his future.

Hello! I just saw your Matriarch post! Can you possibly do a prologue about her backstory and her going to the other dimension with a batfamily and batmom that are still alive and together? And possibly a part 1 where she just walks into the Batcave one night after she sends out an all-call to the bats and the league and once they all start questioning what is going on she comes out and tells them about her backstory and how she'll prevent her future from happening by offing the rogues one by one and saying something like "I'm the only one who could ever succeed in doing this. And do you know why... it's because I know exactly how each and every hero and villain alike think. I know every plan and protocol in place that both sides of the gallery (i.e. meaning the heroic side and villainous side) have in place, how to stop or outsmart them, and every single possible move any of you could make against me. If you think you can stop your wife, mother, friend, or whatever else I am to you, then by all means... I invite you all to play my game, if you can capture me AND discover my plan, then I'll stop for good and go back to my time. But should I be victorious, well, the world and all of you are MINE."

Notes.

In this au (Y/N) pretends to be a hero for the public sake. A part-timer of the league in the future.

Bruce doesn't know (but has suspicion) she is killing or torturing almost half of his rouge gallery.

She's afraid that Bruce won't love her become of his no-killing code.

There's technically a "(Y/N)" in this timeline who meets Bruce and falls in love. But, The Matriarch technically killed her before she could meet Bruce.

But here's another question. How does this (Y/N) interact with the Batfamily?

Since (Y/N) knows of each horrible thing that has happened to her children and lover. Batmom is very protective then most other Batmoms.

She still wants to give her children freedom, but also knows that when she did... They were beaten or almost killed for the sake of protecting others.

Batmom decided to mess with this world's timeline so it would be better than her own. But still deliberately decided to let some things stay the same.

1st Example, Dick Grayson. Now depending if Batmom came around before Dicks parents demise is up to you. But in this instance where she did, Batmom would try to save his parents but it doesn't work out.

2nd would be Jason, this is where it gets kinda fucked up.

Batmom is a very caring individual but Matriarch isn't.

Batmom would do whatever she can to make sure Jason will never know of his mother being alive. Batmom will even go out of her way to guilt-trip Jason and emotionally manipulate him. To the point where he doesn't care if his real mother is alive or dead.

But, if Jason does end up curious and decides to find his mother. Aw hell he ain't gonna be free from Batmoms protection. Including Matriarch.

Batmom will get Bruce on her side to not let Jason out of the house or better yet city to look for his mother. It will take a lot of convincing and emotional manipulation part two. Anything regarding Jason's mother or possibly anyone close to bearing resemblance is wiped from the Bat-computer database.

If Jason managed to find a way to convince Batmom or escape Gotham. You are three steps ahead as Batmom or Matriarch.

The only way Jason could even wind up dead is if Batmom was a second too late.

From that point on if that happens, it'll be a much worse for the latter members and friends of the Batfam.

(Y/N) has and will install trackers on everything and anyone. Your always listening, always alert.

You'll put on the facade sure, but the truth of it all is that.. You're no longer just "scared". No you're terrified, to the point you have the smallest threat or villain is your biggest enemy.

"Hey can we check out this store before we leave?" You asked smiling as you looked up at your significant other.

"Um..." they looked at their wrist watch, "We have a few minutes to spare sure."

"I won't be in too long."

They nodded, "That's fine. I'll wait for you here."

"Oh..." you pulled away. "You don't want to come in with me?"

"I'm kinda tired," they slightly smiled and held the side of your face. "But you should go... like I said I will be waiting here for you outside."

Pouting you nodded, "Okay."

Noticing your sad eyes they pulled you into their arms, hugging you tightly.

"We still have our next stop, remember?" They said kissing the top of your head. "I want to save my energy until then."

With their reassuring words, your smile returned as you hugged them back. "Alright, I can't wait then."

"Me too."

Pulling away you bid your significant other goodbye and walked into the store. There weren't many things you still needed to get, but seeing the (favorite color) outfit on the mannequin intrigued you.

Thinking about your next stop made you felt all giddy on the inside. It had been such a long time since you two went on a trip together, you were excited to spend some quality time and enjoy your marriage.

For once you thought that things were turning around in your favor. And of course you weren't going to let this opportunity slide by to spoil them and let them know how much you missed them.

"(name)?"

Looking over your shoulder you saw your long time friend, a smile forming on your lips.

"Izuku, hey!" You exclaimed walking over to him. "I did not expect to see you here."

"I came here looking for a present since Ayane's birthday is coming up." He explained pulling you into a hug, smiling as he felt your warm embrace. "I didn't quite know where to go so I decided to come to the mall."

Slightly pulling away you said, "I forgot that her birthday is next week... I'm sure whatever you decide to give her she'll love it."

"You think so?..." Izuku chuckled lightly, "I've been trying my best to make her happy. I really want to make this work between us."

"Has she been distant?..."

He sadly nodded, "When I get home from work she's already asleep and when I have time off she gets busy or makes plans before I'm even able to."

It made your heart ache for him. Izuku was always such a sweetheart and cared about those around him, especially his family and friends. He never failed to be there for them or even when strangers asked for his help. Seeing him suffer like this was so unfair.

"I'm sorry to hear about that... I know you really care about her." You said holding both his hands in each one of your own. "I'm sure she will come around when she sees how hard you are trying to fix your marriage. Ayane would be insane to let go of someone like you so easily."

Izuku slightly blushed hearing your words. "I don't know sometimes I feel like she's better off without me―"

You shook your head, "Don't say that. Ayane is lucky to have someone like you. You're a kind hearted, respectable, funny, selfless, person. I know she's your life but she really knocked it out of the park with you."

He smiled looking at you, feeling thankful that he has someone like you around to bring him out of his fearful thoughts. Sometimes he wishes things would have turned out differently.

"Thank you, (name). You always know just what to say."

"I try my best because you're the type of person who deserves the whole world."

Izuku smiled with his eyes closed as he gently squeezed your hands. "I miss having you around like old times, (name)."

Your eyes become glossy knowing you feel the same way, "Me too."

Maybe if you hadn't moved in junior high, things wouldn't have played out this way. If you had convinced your parents to let you stay and finish your third year― but you couldn't keep going on with what if's not anymore. Life turned out the way it did and all you can do now is support him.

"I can help you find a gift if you'd like?' yo suggested.

"Really? I'd appreciate it!" He widely smiled, "You're not busy?"

"Well I came in here to look at something while (s/o name) is resting outside on the bench." You pointed at the entrance door. "I'm sure he won't mind me being here a while longer."

"Let me know when you need to leave I don't want to keep you from going somewhere you need to."

"No worries, did you have any idea on what you'd might want to get her?"

"Actually..."

Turns out shopping with him was a lot of fun, it felt weird not doing it with your partner. But it was different with him. Izuku paid attention to detail and was vocal about what he thought. He was a gentleman even when you had picked things off the rack, he offered to carry them for you.

It was kinda eye opening how different he was compared to (s/o name). Jealousy started to build in your chest, Ayane was lucky to have a boyfriend like Izuku. If this was how he was with you, as a friend, you can't imagine how lovely he mustbe with her.

Approaching the checkout counter, he placed all items down.

"Did you find everything you needed?" A women asked.

"Yes, thank you." You responded and turned to look at Izuku, "You can pay for Ayane's present first. I can pay for my things second."

"No, I'll pay for your things too." He said taking out his wallet and reaching for his credit card.

Shaking your head you held his hands, stopping him from giving his card.

"No way!" You said, "I have enough money to pay for my things Izuku―"

"I insist." he softly smiled looking at you in the eyes. "It's the least I can do for you helping me to find her a gift."

"Izuku." You whined, "You can't pay for my things it'll be too expensive in total!"

Chuckling he placed his hand on top of yours. "I don't mind."

Knowing he wasn't going to give up, you sighed letting him do it while he gave you a sheepish smile in return. The women behind the counter couldn't help and chuckle at your interaction.

"My, you two are such an adorable couple." She took his card and waited for him to put in his details. "Young love."

He smiled looking down at the machine in front of him. "Thanks I try my best to make them happy, that's all I ever want to do."

Your eyes slightly widened at his response making you turn red.

"I can tell you make her happy. I saw the way you held their stuff while they looked around. Not many couples do that for each other nowadays."

The women handed you the bags and mumbled a thank you to her.

"Thank you for coming!" She waved at you both goodbye, Izuku and you waved back as you headed to the entrance door.

You were too flushed to even say anything. His comment was something you never expected, you'd think he would have denied it by saying you were only friends.

"L―Let me pay you back―"

Izuku stopped you this time from taking out your wallet.

"Can you please let me have this one?" he begged. "I wanted to do it for you. I don't want you to return or pay me back with anything."

"I swear sometimes you are too kind for this world Izuku."

"I mean I don't think so." He chuckled rubbing the back of his head, "But that's thoughtful of you."

"See you just proved it again." You said opening the door and letting him go out first.

Izuku shook his head finding it funny how stubborn you were as well. He was about to ask you something when he bumped into your back, he stepped aside and looked at you.

"(name)? Is everything alright?..."

He followed your gaze and saw your partner standing there kissing, someone else.

Your hand gripped the newly shopping bag tightly, not blinking once. Tears started to brim in your eyes as you tried to understand what was happening in front of you.

Izuku immediately covered your eyes with his hand but it was already too late. The damage had been done nothing he could do to shield away the pain in your chest.

You looked down at the ground, tears falling to the floor. The shiny tile mirrored your ache, you tried your best to control them but the sobs were becoming harder to keep down.

He lowered his head and softly spoke "(name) do you want me to take you somewhere else?..."

"N―No..." your voice broke, "I can't... walk away and pretend like nothing is wrong."

It was sickening how they both stood there kissing each other not caring about them being caught.

Firmly you walked towards them removing his hand from your eyes. Izuku stood behind you, making sure he stayed close to you.

You parted your lips to speak, but no sound was coming from them. It was difficult to even gather a word, like your voice had been taken away.

Izuku of course noticed and slid his hand into yours trying to comfort you to let you know he was there if you needed anything.

"(s/o name)." You spoke trying to speak firmly without your voice breaking.

(s/o name) and the women turned around, it was much of a bigger surprise than you had anticipated.

"I―Izuku..." the women spoke.

"It all makes sense now..." he said furrowing his eyebrows as he looked looking straight into her eyes. "You always made sure to make plans and arrive late when I was already asleep so I wouldn't notice the time you came back home."

Your eyes flashed with anger, feeling upset at yourself for not noticing is sudden change in character and the trips he had to take. It was plainly obvious for anyone to see except you.

"To think that I tried hard to match my schedule with yours to fix things." Your lip was quivering, "Damn it... I was so set on doing anything for you."

"I'm sorry you found out this way, (name)." They said looking away from your gaze.

"But you're not sorry for cheating are you?" You questioned then looked at Ayane, "And neither are you huh? You did not care about having an affair or thought about how this would affect your spouses! All you cared about was your damn selfish desires."

Ayane scoffed. "Don't pretend you are innocent when I have seen the way you looked at him each time you two were together. You are the same as us, so don't point fingers and turn into hypocrites because it doesn't suit you."

"You're wrong." You roughly wiped away the tears. "I never once thought about cheating I knew if things went south I would be upfront and tell the truth. I could never in a million years think about breaking a person's trust."

"Can you please... drop it?" Your partner said, "I know it wasn't ideal but you are making a scene here."

"You're right."

The sound of your hand connecting with their cheek echoed in the busy mall. (s/o name) held his cheek in shock not believing what you had done.

Ayane's eyes widened, her hand went up to hit you but Izuku caught it in time.

"Don't you dare hit them." Izuku's grip tightened on her wrist.

"Why are you defending them when they were the one who started it?" She accused you, "How can you choose them over me!"

"Because they weren't the one who hurt me." He let go of her wrist standing beside you.

(s/o name) clenched his jaw. "Why do you always have to be so damn dramatic? I started to go out with out you should be happy I even considered doing that for you (name)."

"Yeah because that was the bear minimum you jerk!" You exclaimed raising your voice not caring if strangers stopped by and stared. "We got married and swore an oath to be there for one another... I shouldn't have been getting the crumbs that you couldn't give to her."

"At least they were having more fun with me than you." Ayane accused. "The only reason they stayed with you is out of pity."

"And you seems so proud saying it out loud." Izuku chimed in, "It's like neither of you actually cared about us to begin with."

She looked away feeling slightly regretful for not being honest with him.

"What's done is done, (name)." (s/o name) said standing taller as they proudly held Ayan's hand out in the open in front of you two as if you both never existed in their lives. "I screwed up alright? I cheated on you with her. Let's just start the divorce and finish this boring relationship."

Stepping back you tried so hard to make sense as to what you did wrong. Were you not enough for them? Were you too caring? Too bothersome when all they wanted was their space? Did you ask for too much in return―?

"You're right." Izuku spoke wrapping his arm around your back, holding you close to his chest. "This marriage was doomed from the start and for once I am glad that it's over. Because (name) never deserved all the stuff she has done for you. It always looked like such a one sided relationship, at least finally they're getting rid of the garbage that held them back all these years."

Their eyes widened getting ready to counter attack with their fist. Ayane held them back from putting their hands on Izuku.

They pressed their tongue on the inside of their lip, seething in anger. "You son of a bitch."

"You can get mad all you want, but you better, listen to me." Izuku ordered, looking straight into their soul with no hesitation. "I don't want you to come back and look for them understand? I want you out of their lives for good. (name) doesn't need to keep suffering because of you."

"You're just going to stand there and let him talk to me that way?"

"You have until tomorrow to get your stuff out, (s/o name)." You replied and turned, walking away from them blocking out their rage against you two.

Izuku was trying so hard to keep himself cool and collected but his tightened fist and clenched jaw proved otherwise. Yes he was hurt and bitter for how things turned out but deep down there was a feeling of relief, glad that he wasn't going to be in a lonely home, tied for the rest of his life.

Sniffling you leaned closer into his side trying to hold yourself up. Tears kept rolling down your tear stained cheeks.

Looking around the mall, he managed to find a secluded spot away from prying eyes. Gently he sat you down on the bench. Izuku crouched down in front of you holding both your hands in his own.

"It's okay, let it out." He softly spoke.

But it was difficult to keep crying. The heaviness within inside you remained and yet no more tears came out. You had cried yourself to the fullest.

In the same way, you felt like an idiot about crying for someone who did not deserve your tears to begin with.

"You're not a fool for letting yourself feel, (name)." He knew you so well. "You are pain, it is natural to feel like you have to free yourself in some way."

"Y―yeah but I―I wasn't the... only one who got h―hurt." You stuttered, breathing heavily. "I―I should be helping.. you t―too."

"I was already anticipating for this to happen." He lowered his head, looking down at the floor with a disappointed smile. "I did have some small hope that I would be wrong, I won't lie that it does hurt."

He exhaled out as his lip began to quiver. All the emotions he was trying to block out were suddenly hitting him all at once. Sniffling he closed his eyes in hopes of stopping the tears from falling, but failed.

"I―I'm sorry..." He croaked out, resting his forehead on your lap and letting go of your hands.

"Don't apologize..." you whispered, "You also found out that you were cheated on. It's okay to cry it out, remember?..."

Izuku did not respond, you took the moment to gently caress the back of his head, running your fingers through his soft green locks. His body slowly relaxed as he felt your touch.

"I know this is something we both... did not expect to happen. And I won't lie it hurts like hell..." Tears began to cover your eyes. "but we will... no matter h―how much time it takes us, we will get through this... together."

Sniffling he wiped away his tears with his forearm, lifting his head to look at you. "Can I... can I hug you, (name)?..."

You weakly chuckled not believing he was asking you for a hug.

"You don't need to ask, Izuku." Opening up your arms you invited him in. "My hugs are always here when you need them."

He leaped into your arms, hugging your body tightly. Sobs began to escape from inside of him. You did your best to calm him down by rubbing his back gently. "There there... it's okay."

"I should be the one comforting you..." He said breathing hard.

"Sometimes it's okay if the roles are reversed, you know?" Resting your chin on his shoulder. "You've been there for me countless times when we were little, it's my turn to comfort you."

"I―I know... it's just that," he pulled away sitting down next to you. "I wanted to ease your pain a bit, help you in any way s―so you could feel better."

"I feel better knowing you are the one here with me." You said trying to assure him in some way that his presence alone was enough. "It's going to be awhile until either of us are okay again... that is the truth. Maybe―" you sighed looking down at your lap, "With time things will turn out differently."

"I'll be here, just like I always have been, (name)." He reassured you, "If you need anything, anything you can tell me."

"W―well..." you turned away from him.

"What is it?..." He asked leaning forward and tilting his head to the side.

"I―uh..." you clasped your hands together, moving your thumbs one over the other. "I was wondering... if it would be okay if I could stay with you?... j―just for a couple of days of course..."

Izuku smiled for the first time, "Of course. I was going to ask you as well but I didn't want to pressure you to make a decision."

"I felt kinda embarrassed asking you..."

"Why? You shouldn't feel like that at all. You'll always have a place to go to I told you that if something happens you can stay with me."

It was funny how he was acting more like a loving partner than (s/o name) ever was. With him you felt save and appreciated.

"Thank you..." you wrapped your arms around his mid section.

He cupped the back of your head, pulling you tighter against his chest. Using his other arm to wrap it securely around your lower back.

You both did not know if it was the ache or the exhaustion that was already creeping up your bodies, but the hug this embrace felt nothing like any of the hugs you had given each other before. This closeness, the feel of arms enveloped around each of your figures, held so much love.

It went far beyond it being just a hug between friends.

"Do you want to pass by to pick up some of your clothes?"

You shook your head.

Looking down at you, chuckling tightly. "I can just lend you some of my clothes then."

There was no clear answer as to what you were both feeling, all you did know was that you did not want to be with any body else.

you knew you liked him from the very beginning but the circumstances of your friendship complicated making any moves. you wished you could, but you just couldn't. you were still a rookie and you shouldn't date, especially not an idol from your own company. but you just couldn't take it and seeing how yeonjun was treating you, it made you like him even more. he was just so funny, so understanding and kind you felt like you were going to melt every time he looked at you. after a few months you guys were really close to each other, cuddles and being touchy was normal. one day you decided to invite him over when your members were away. he obviously accepted the invite and you both ended up on the couch of your dorm, watching a movie. well, he was watching because you were just blankly staring at the screen, thinking about, how could you possibly tell the choi yeonjun that you in fact have feelings for him. yeonjun soon noticed you weren't focused on the movie at all instead you were just sitting next to him very nervous. "hey, are you okay? you look stressed, do you want to talk about something?" hearing his caring and soft voice did something to you and everything you wanted to tell him just came out from you mouth without your notice. "i like you choi yeonjun" you said not even turning your eyes from the screen. when your mind actually processed what happened, you snapped, looking at him shocked. the silence filled up the space between you which was only sometimes disturbed by the noises from the movie. to your surprise, boy chuckled and a warm smile appeared on his face. he shook his head in disbelief and gently brushed his hand through your hair. you were uni friends, you talked pretty frequently, mostly about books or movies but you just felt so comfortable with this nerd weeb kid that one day you understood that... you have feelings for him! you didn't know how to approach this matter because the thought of confessing to someone stressed the shit out of you. but you and him just felt so right and knowing soobin's rather shy nature when it came to crushes, you knew you had to take the risk. one day you just asked him out for a walk around the uni grounds because you knew he would totally panic if you two were going somewhere unfamiliar to him. you were walking for a minute talking about some petty uni stuff when you finally gathered all the courage you had and stopped him by grabbing his wrist. "i actually asked to go out because i have something to tell you" you started, staring at him with a determined look. soobin looked kinda scared, but nodded at your words with his lips forming into a little pout as it usually did when he listened to you focused. just the sight of his pout made your heart shake, your eyes dropped to his lips for a second but then came back to his eyes again. you took a deep breath and finally let it all out. "i like you, soobin" you said feeling the overwhelming weight leaving your heart immediately. "like, actually, a lot" you added not turning your sight away from him for even the slightest second. you were still holding his wrist in his hand but it didn't seem to be a problem to him. soobin raised his eyebrows and his expression made you chuckle quietly. the boy was too stunned to speak. his eyes dropped to the ground and he quickly placed his free hand on the back of his neck, scratching it. "are you going to respond?" you were getting impatient. "well... yes... i-" he stopped and took a deep breath before he continued. he looked very nervous but really focused too. you were childhood friends. your mom was best friends with his mom so that's how you two were always stuck with each other. when you were younger you didn't think much of it, it was your beomie, the one that you had sleepovers with and the one who never let you win any hot wheels car races. but when you got older you noticed that sometimes the things he's been doing make you feel... different. like... you like him but... more? it was all very tragic to you because you just didn't understand what's happening to you and why do you feel this funny feeling in your stomach when beomgyu plays with your hair. he's been doing this forever!! what's so different?? you were completely lost to the point you felt weird around beomgyu. when he finally noticed that something's off, he decided to just ask. you were at his house, playing games and after winning another race he begun. "can you tell me what's wrong? you've been acting weird lately, did i do something wrong?" he said putting his gamepad aside. you looked at him stressed 'he noticed' you said in your mind trying not to lose your shit. and just when you were about to say that everything's fine, you just... exploded? "because it's been so different lately, i don't know what's happening but i feel this thing in my stomach whenever you're next to me or touch me and it's really nice but also scary i've never felt this way before beomgyu" you spat it out with one breath which left gyu kinda speechless. he quickly recovered from your sudden flood of words and decided to remain calm. "so... you mean you feel weird when i do... this?" he asked quietly and slowly leaned towards you. his hand traveled to the side of your face, and when you thought he's going to kiss you, his thumb stroked your cheek in a very warm and lovely gesture. the loud gulp could've been heard in the room, and the only thing you were able to do, was nod. "so you like me!" he said, proud of himself, leaning back. you furrowed your eyebrows looking at him still confused. "well, obviously i like you, we're frie-" you didn't finish. that's when you understood. you don't like beomgyu. you like like beomgyu. gyu laughed seeing your realization and shook his head. "it's okay" he finally said, really softly. he looked away to the screen, grabbed the gamepad and started fidgeting with it. "i like you too" he smiled but refused to look at you because his face was... red. poor boy got shy shy shy~

taehyun

taehyun was always so cool to you. he was your friend's older brother and whenever you hung out at their place, you'd suddenly meet hyun somewhere in the house. you didn't know if it's your radar or were you purposefully looking for him whenever you’re at kangs' house but something about meeting him when your friend thought you're in the bathroom gave you a thrill. you obviously didn't do anything crazy, just talk for a little, normal chit chat. but it was enough for you. your friend obviously didn't know about your little crush on taehyun because they'd kill you for even looking in his direction. but they didn't need to know, right? one day you came over because your friend decided to make a sleepover for you both. mr and mrs kang were away for their anniversary trip and the house was all for you both. and well, taehyun. the whole evening you haven't seen him and you obviously wouldn't ask your friend about him because that'd be weird. so when your bestie fell asleep, that's when you decided to investigate. you strolled through the hallways of the home looking for the older boy or any signs of him. that's when you finally got to the top of the stairs where was his room. you tip toed to his door but couldn't quite hear anything besides the noises of the washing machine in the toilet few meters away. you didn't know what were you thinking but you decided to just peek inside his room to see if he's there. you grabbed the door handle, when suddenly you heard someone's voice. A friend of mine actually came up with the idea for naga scara!! Together, we fleshed out the plot. It wasn't originally a fic, though, it was just a rp that got me brainrotting afterwards. I couldn't stop thinking about the whole concept until I finished writing Hidden in the Sands. The fic literally wouldn't leave me alone unless I was working on it LMAO

I'm going to take this as an excuse to talk a bit about the behind the scenes here (you have NO idea how much I've wanted to infodump about this fic)–originally, the reader was actually my friend's interpretation of Lumine and Sanad was originally my Alhaitham. I also played the part of Kuni himself. It was a bit awkward, actually, because Alhaitham and Kuni had to talk to each other a little bit and it felt like I was talking to myself.

I've changed the personalities of the reader and Sanad greatly, as you might have already guessed, since Sanad behaves nothing like Alhaitham; Sanad's more like one of those "prime examples" that Alhaitham talks about when he says, "Book learning alone is not enough to cultivate intelligence." Sanad is, intentionally, a very flawed but still reasonably likeable character. I want to talk about him too. Oh boy, looking back on this I sure did talk a lot about an OC I don't think anyone genuinely cares about.

I wanted to make him come off as normal, like an actual human person. He really is just a regular dude, he's just been kinda brainwashed by the Akademiya, as shown by the lines, "The Akademiya has declared them to be just baseless nonsense, so of course I don't think they actually exist." and "Desert dwellers tend to be... fearless." He's absorbed many commonly held beliefs (and biases) in the Akademiya, a textbook example of someone who's been taught what to think rather than how to think. I wanted him to be realistic. However, he's still funny, charming, and overall good-willed, even if he's spineless and very easily led.

I've greatly changed the fic from the original rp, and only the base premise (yandere!naga!scara and the whole "commissioned to find the culprit for some strange murders in the Hadramaveth") remains the same. It went through several versions at first. In fact, before I came up with Sanad, I was going to have Cyno replace Alhaitham! But ultimately, I realized Cyno was actually competent and I might have had to write a proper fight scene, which I did not want to do. You can still see a remnant of the first draft I chose to leave in (from when Cyno was the disposable companion) in the bad joke Sanad tells at the beginning of the story.

Using Sanad also had other benefits that I feel helped pull the fic together!! His cowardly nature gave reader a chance to endear themselves to Kunikuzushi, for refusing to abandon Sanad even after he (frankly, understandably) ran away. Even this early on, I had decided that whatever backstory naga Kuni might have had, it absolutely had to revolve around betrayal since canon Kuni's backstory is so deeply tied to it.

It's a really minor pet peeve of mine, and it doesn't bother me too much, but I usually don't really like it when the yandere starts to fixate on the object of their obsession for no reason than, like, "love at first sight" or "they simply caught my eye for some vague reason I cannot put into words." It's not bad, per se, and it's not even a solid rule of mine! I can think of several fics I love that don't give a solid reason, though the characters in those have such a dynamic that you still understand why one became so interested in the other to begin with... (I'm making this more complicated than it is, I think, but I'm beginning to think it's just I just don't care for it when the MC has the depth of a piece of paper.) Anyway, I'm getting derailed again, but I chose to give Kuni a reason to empathize with the reader in the form of Sanad and his "betrayal" because of this preference of mine.

However, and I think I've touched on this a bit in a previous post, this wasn't the only reason Kuni decided to spare them. In fact, even after he decided to leave you for last, he still thought he was going to come back to kill you. What really interested him was your insistence on saving Sanad even after what Kuni perceived as a betrayal. Why would you try to help someone who didn't even make an attempt to help you? It doesn't make sense. You're too soft, it's endearing.

Whether or not Sanad's actions are justified is debatable, though I personally understand them. He's never fought in his whole life. If you, the experienced monster-fighting adventurer couldn't do it, how could he? He doesn't even have a sword. It's certainly cowardly and rude to say the least, but given the circumstances, I think it's the choice most people would make in that situation. Of course, it's absolutely something Kunikuzushi could have (and did) twist into something completely different. I think I made it pretty obvious, but contrary to what Kuni said, Sanad had no such malicious thoughts when he left you there. Kuni is extremely jaded; his perception of the world has been mostly shaped by the betrayals he's experienced, and he's no different in this AU. As I said before, Sanad's not a terrible person, just terribly average. If he had survived, he absolutely would have had survivors' guilt.

Anyway!!! I'm not sorry about the infodump, thank you for giving me the slightest reason to tell you all about it. Here's what you actually asked for.

Kuni views most people as inconsequential, little more than helpless ants. He doesn't care about them in the slightest. If anything, they irritate him. So when someone shows up–an old friend, a crush, anyone–his first thought is to get rid of them if they venture too far in, and especially if they see him. Even if he doesn't know that they know you. If he lets them go, more will come. If he finds out they're looking for you, specifically... well, it doesn't really change his plans. He's going to kill them no matter what.

It does motivate him though, to be a bit crueler, to make it last a bit longer. What they are to you doesn't change the outcome, but it might sour his mood a bit more if they were anything more than friends or family. It's not likely that he'll leave them be long enough to find this out, though. Logically speaking, they're probably not going to tell a monster like him all about the friend/family/crush they're looking for in this desert, especially not when he's clearly unfriendly.

It's not totally impossible, though. This hypothetical person would have heard all about the strange attacks (as mentioned in the fic), so seeing a large half-snake person could make them realize that Kuni was most likely the cause for your disappearance (even though they'd assume it was murder and not kidnapping). Even so, I doubt they'd have a little chat over tea about who all Kuni has murdered recently.

Anyway, I digress. Assuming he figures it out somehow, whether or not he tells you about them depends on his mood and your behavior. Unfortunately for you, dealing with people irritates him. Especially when they're specifically looking to take what's his from him.

He'll come back covered in blood either way, but if he's in a bad mood, or you haven't been on your best behavior, he'll tell you all about what they looked like. He makes sure to mention that they were looking for you, and describe in detail everything he did to them.

"I'm going to leave his corpse out to rot in the sun," he hissed into your ear, pulling away to look you in the eye, "for the vultures and serpents to feast on. It serves him right. He was on a fool's errand; it's impossible to retrieve what's lost to the sands."

A interesting comparison and differences………

So have you guys may be wondering something? Because I actually noticed something that I think many people find this comparison quite believable, and for good reasons. Because it also involves around a spin-off of the main show that’s set in an extended universe. Much like Helluva Boss. And that spin-off…….is Fear The Walking Dead. Now you guys may exactly asking “why or how is this comparison to two separated spin-off has notable similarities yet plenty of different things?????” When I answered that major question from you all, you’ll eventually understand.

Right off the bat, FTWD and HB has a similar problem/flaws when how comes to the later seasons as far as the writing, character, set pieces, etc. Especially with two common/noticeable problems between them…..among with explaining the different things to along with it.

Is how both show switch and just mostly focused on one or two characters, taking over the other important main characters purposes. Which is being Blitzo and Stolas, among with Morgan Jones. Hints how the fandom/community called both of them being “The Biltzo and Stolas Show” and “The Morgan Jones Show.”

Starting with Morgan Jones, his first appearances happened around the beginning of Season 4, set a few years later after Season 3 ended. And I can agreed that Morgan isn’t a good choice for a multitude of reason. But the main problem is how he doesn’t really do anything much or changed anything for the show beside just killing walkers and being insufferable despite being the new main protagonist after the story arc of the Clark family, whose purpose was to healed what was broken and helping other supporting characters, but his niceness and nobility is what kinda ruins him as one of the best characters from The Walking Dead universe. And this happened ever since Travis was killed off from Season 3, then Nick was also killed off during Season 4, Alicia was gone around the end of Season 7, and Madison just….isn’t the same person anymore. Because of that, he taking over for what could’ve been a potentially great new season for the Clark family after Season 3, if everything’s was different. But guess not. On the positive side, Morgan isn’t quite a terrible father nor a terrible leader. Since he still has a heart inside of him, still at time, deeply care towards the people surrounding him, and even tried his hardest to be a good father to his daughter, ever since he lost his own son….unlike with Blitzo and Stolas.

I’m just going to say this…..Blitzo and Stolas was two characters I used to enjoyed and ship a whole lot!!!!!! At first. They may seem like two fun characters who may be a bit of a gay horny couple and often at times, they would often used each other. But they do have moments where I felt them in between, was something I’ve never thought was that good….that is until Season 2 came, and their characterization is right I started to realize……they’re never a good character nor a good father, and most of the time, they both always appeared in almost every episode. And looking deeper. Really shows it all.

Like with Blitzo.

Although he can be hilarious at times and has a few moments that makes him stand out. Yet at the same time, he screw everything up and is a complete asshole. Especially how he treats Moxxie and even stalks him and Millie as well, despite the moment from Episode 6, Season 1. He still abuse the hell out of Moxxie, not to mentioned, taking advantage from Stolas, and most of all….neglectful to his love one/friends/colleagues. I get he has a tragic backstory, ever since Buck has never cared for him beside MONEYYYYYYYY!!!!!!! But just because there’s people who are asshole to you, doesn’t excuse the fact that you’re an asshole, abusive, and a neglectful imp who doesn’t let his own siblings nor colleagues just moved on and do their own things. But still been trying to have a relationship with his adopted daughter “Loona.”

Which perfectly leads to Stolas himself.

Stolas is not a good character and a good father. Straight away. He’s responsible for cheating on his own wife with a imp, leading into massive drama behind the Goetia family. It’s even possible Octavia has a good relationship with her father once when she was young, but as time’s goes on…eventually leading to her father relationships with Blitzo. But not for good reasons. Especially in one of the best episodes from Season 1, Episodes 2. It’s apparently cleared he only cared for himself but doesn’t cared about anything else, even if he tried to cheer his daughter up when taking her to Loo Loo Land. But it was around the same time when Stolas also invite, you guess it…..Blitzo! The same guys who he was falling in love and was cheating his wife. He only invited him….JUST TO BE HORNY TO HIM!!!!!!! Making him a complete fucking liar towards his own daughter about “needing security,” when you’re just having Blitzo to flirt with him…..the same can be said for Season 2, Episode 2 when he and Blitzo are trying to search for Octavia, after she accidentally ends up in LA. Yet, only for him TO JUST FLIRT ON BLIZTO INSTEAD OF BEING SERIOUS ON SEARCHING YOUR OWN DAUGHTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Both the concept of the spin-off has a lot of potential. Especially how Helluva Boss is meant to be an episodic show about three Imps and a Hellhound forming an assassin team known as the I.M.P that involved around teleporting to the human world, in order to assassinate their targets that’s responsible for doing horrible thing. While Fear The Walking Dead is a prequel to The Walking Dead, which is set around the beginning of the Undead Apocalypse. These ideas, again, sounds freaking awesome!!!!!!! But, that’s where another problem rises, because FTWD moved away from the concept as Season 4 came by and Morgan coming along for the ride. It just only become more like a midquel/sequel to The Walking Dead than an actual prequel and the writing just becomes ridiculous and abysmal. As for Helluva Boss, it should’ve been an episodic rather than a plot driven show, which resulted into a complete mess of too many recurring plots and characters, an confusing world-building, characters personalities being assassinated or completely downgraded, many plot holes, etc.

Conclusion. These show, despite so many issue and flaws that cannot be ignored. I still have a lot of fun watching them with some fun I can enjoyed from, especially with its entertainment value. But with Fear the Walking Dead finally getting closer to end in Season 8 as Morgan Jones is officially leaving in the end of the first half, to search for Rick Grimes. Leaving a bit of a nice sendoff to him, leaving the rest of the original cast of the characters to conclude the rest of the storyline. For it to come to the end. As far as the current state for both HH/HB “mostly HB,” it’s not looking good for how the fandom has become a divisive mess that argues with their opinions/criticisms, and especially how Vivziepop has become a mainstream definition of how not to be an amazing creator, she’s not a terrible person …but not a good person either. Even the way she responded to criticism, is not looking pretty for both her and the future of her animated shows. Even growing some concerned for Hazbin Hotel….still……….

We must wait and see. Sooner or later.

here's some notes on my recent chsc: what you're missing

-since i published as needed as last year's snow in january, i've been busy trying to graduate and not had any time to read or write or even really think about genshin. then i visited our chsc server friends for a few days beginning of june and i came back and haven't stopped writing since

-on the drive up me and taho spent most of the two hours yapping about chsc, and it was lovely but also extremely extremely strange for me to hear someone praise my writing irl. im genuinely just stumbling through word documents like a bow-legged fawn so

-starting back up with writing this summer i started working things out on physical paper in a notebook. its actually been really fun/feels different than notes app/sticky note-ing it. i still did use sticky notes for puzzling out intricacies of the smut tho (and then proceeded to pretty much use none of it) i'll attach a pic of my notes here for fun even though its slightly horrifying to do

-like most of my fics ive had this one waiting in the wings for a while, basic premise though was just 'chsc first time happens after scara backhands childe in front of people and childe gets very horny about that'. wrote it over about two weeks, fight scene fucked me up until i just locked in and wrote all of it at once at 2am. spent a while rearranging the smut then sent it to pachi to beta, forced myself not to look at it during those days, got it back and made isolated edits and was too embarrassed to read the smut i wrote 2 weeks ago again so i just posted it. hope its ok

-i always always always have trouble with scara during harbinger era. its because im a chronic overexplainer/overjustifier for characters getting together. for his actions during that time i lean on the little tiny bit we ever saw of it and that's mostly abrasiveness... but you gotta pull on how wanderer acts/ his backstory a bit too to like really see where hes coming from at that point in the story. halfway thru writing i realized he wouldnt act the way i was imagining him acting, had to fix that, then had to tweak the rest of the fic

-basically; i think childe would accept that he has a thing for scaramouche without too much thought. he's into mean people who're older than him + match his freak. he goes towards what makes him feel good. scara on the other hand i think... he immediately justifies the pull he feels as 'childe's stupid enough that i can use him'/'he worships me without being told'. this is a guilty pleasure for both of them until they realize its not (which is what i hoped to set up by beginning it with their abyss connections-- they're alike from the very beginning and they're both being used in different ways) <- i talked to pachi some in the middle of writing and it helped me puzzle out what chsc would be feelin a bit more. ty dr pachi phd in childe characterization

-had to have like multiple tabs open of bible's rgg pwp fics as emotional support. i filtered fics tagged 'cunniligus' in my bookmarks more than once. i was floundering. 90% of what i write or consider writing is E rated but i don't actually get much fulfillment out of describing smut. however i kind of tried really hard here bc i know thats what 99% of people are reading this for and even though i hate when i have to write the words scaramouche and clit directly next to each other i ended up pretty proud of the smut here.

With a strained expression across his face and in a tone that sounds a little too genuine, he says, “feels kinda... different, since it's you." It's as bold-faced and earnest as anything else he's heard Childe say. But it's a sort of confirmation that Scaramouche was hoping to avoid—whilst simultaneously enjoying dancing around it. Stupid to give him this much leeway, this much permission, and not expect the guy who does everything else with the ruthlessness and loyalty of a hunting dog not to extend that to this.

i liked this bc i felt like i managed to nail down scara realizing he might've bit off more than he can chew without disrupting the smut. and childe + dog metaphor + shaky earnest confessions + L + ratio

-my penchant for having characters write letters in fic returns (almost as bad as my thing with inserting flashbacks in the middle of stuff) (i like first person but i dont like it in fic so this is the only way i can do it)

marty, who, in this image is around 18/19 years old, and doc, who's around 29.

the whole idea of this is that marty accidentally got stranded in november 1942, back when he was still 17. i don't know why, but i think i'd stick with a time circuit malfunction. anyway. he was all tired and shaken up when he made his way to the center of town and then met doc. doc felt bad for the child, and there was somthing that just clicked - doc ended up adopting him. like for real. legally. because marty was not yet old enough to get his own house and didn't have money anyway. the two of them get close, comfortable with each other and i headcanon them as very affectionate because platonic closeness is always looked over >:(

important detail to note: doc doesn't know about time travel and never will. marty came up with a fake backstory and tells it to everyone because he literally can't explain all the shit and the delorean is beyond repair.

on christmas 1943, a little over a year after marty got stranded, doc announces that they have to move out of hill valley. why? doc got a new job. what kinda job? doc doesn't tell marty.

marty gets to figure it out on his own, because eventually, they arrive in new mexico, and marty knows history woohoo

he has a chaotic sense of fashion because he IS from the 1980s after all. he copes by joking and being sarcastic (this is how he deals with being stuck in the 40s) and he will beat everyone up who even dares to insult doc. oh yeah he also has longer hair than our marty bc he never cut it since part 3.

chaos ensues when doc meets his colleagues and marty makes his own friends at los alamos, and doc and marty struggle to communicate because of the secrecy of it all.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Afterthoughts

Game: Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (May 23, 2024)

It's that time again!! If you had told me not too long ago that I'd have to give my thoughts on 2 different Mario RPG remakes on Switch (and an upcoming brand new M&L) so close to each other, I would've laughed you out of the room. But here we are. And now I look quite foolish, don't I?

My mood is kinda in free fall and I only want to write about these Mario RPGs when I'm in a good mood, but I think I'm okay right now. So I'll capitalize on it. Similar to the Super Mario RPG Remake I'll try to focus on what makes this such a lovely remake rather than gushing about why I adore TTYD. But if you're curious, it has some of the best characters, writing, and combat in the series. While I also think it's a really padded out game. That's my micro review of the original. Okay? Okay.

As always, this isn't a review. Just me throwing up my thoughts. Go play Thousand Year Door RIGHT NOW. Either the original or the remake. I'll wait.

SPOILERS FOR THOUSAND YEAR DOOR AHEAD, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!

Opening

I feel like I've given you my long, tragic backstory with Mario RPGs a billion times but if you somehow missed it. These were my favorite games of all time, they fell off, I get sad, so on and so forth. Thousand Year Door is one of my favorite video games ever, in the trio of greatest Mario games ever made you have Super Mario RPG, Bowser's Inside Story, and TTYD. And, yeah, needless to say. I was bummed when Paper Mario started to go in its new direction. But I'd like to not give that the oxygen of attention at the moment.

So when they were like "Oh there's one last thing" in that direct, the MILLISECOND that first note hit I was like "HUH???" And I flipped my fucking LID, I couldn't believe they were ACTUALLY gonna remake TTYD. And not only that, it was looking good! And then it came out and I couldn't afford it lol.

But thankfully my good friend (Idk if they want me to name them here so I'll avoid it for the time being) bought it for me. Which was so so so nice of them and I genuinely appreciate it cause this was such a wonderful experience. So this review is sponsored by my friend :)

And again, I'll skip the suspense. This is another WONDERFUL remake that's a total love letter to the original and understands what made it so good.

Stuff I liked

I think the best place to start would be with how faithful this is to the original. It doesn't change pretty much ANYTHING. If there's any major changes to stuff that was in the original (not counting new content) I can't remember it. Not that I was expecting them to change it but still, it's nice that they didn't like, butcher it or something crazy. It's the same good plot, pretty much an identical script (with any changes being for the better imo.), and the same wonderful gameplay.

But of course, what makes a remake interesting is what ACTUALLY gets changed. And I think pretty much right out the gate you'll notice the MASSIVE graphics overhaul this game got. It takes a more papercraft approach like the secondary Paper Mario Trilogy (SS, CS, OK) but applies it to the worlds from the original game. And it looks AMAZING! This is basically exactly what I wanted ever since we got to see the SS Flavion in Smash 3DS lmao. In addition to that there's SO many new sprites in this game for each character. It's actually crazy just how much new animations there are for everyone. Not just teammates, who now have back sprites and TONS of facial expressions and reactions, but even enemies and NPCs have TONS of new things that can do. Sometimes enemies will laugh at you if you get fucked over, people will change to match the mood of what they're saying. It's actually crazy, I had to stop playing every 5 seconds to look at all the new sprites and details. One of my personal favorite new expressions is Mario tipping his hat in respect when death is brought up. It's small but it's such a Mario thing to do and I actually flipped out when I first saw it.

Then there's the redone soundtrack. OH MY GOD it's SOOOOO GOOD. This might be a better OST than the original, and may be one of my new favorite Mario RPG OSTs in general. Every song is lovingly redone and they all sound SO NICE. In particular the battle theme, which changes for each chapter, is SUCH a treat. I adored that. All the boss remixes are great (Cortez in particular was a big shock that I loved) and I believe the teammate themes are actually new. This was also a lovely addition. Bobbery (not biased because he's my favorite partner) probably has my favorite theme. And some of my favorite songs, 'Happiness and Sadness' + 'We're Counting On You, Mario' were both SO well done!! And it's changes and upgrades like these that REALLY add to the experience and make it even better in my opinion! Or at least, wonderful to reexperience!

Then of course there's the combat, which is pretty much completely unchanged as far as I can recall? But they did actually add new super bosses which was really cool! You can fight Prince Mush which is neat, and Whacka which is AWESOME! This actually gives a reason to do the Pit of 100 Trials a second time (fun fact, this remake was my first time ever beating the pit! And I did it without dying. You can retry a floor if you die in this remade version of the pit, just as an fyi).

And the game over all is filled with nice little changes like that. Stuff that's maybe not ground breaking, or giving you a brand new reason to try it like the changes to Super Mario RPG's combat. But in my opinion, these small quality of life improvements are just as good. A much easier to access quick travel room to warp to each chapter is added in the sewers. Saving is instant, similar to Origami King and such. Most of the backtracking that people complain about has been cut out with simple pipes and springs in convenient locations. They even add more stuff to collect like letting you unlock CONCEPT ART WHICH IS SO FUCKING COOL, I still haven't looked through it all but it's actually amazing they did this and I'd KILL for Mario Art Books from every Mario game please just release more Mario concept art UGH. And of course there's the changed dialogue to confirm vivian being trans which is so nice, and I'm honestly shocked they actually did it. It feels almost un-nintendo of them to do. But I'm so happy they did it! It's a real remake, baby!!

In general, yeah, this game is perfect. It's filled with clear love for the original, without being afraid of acknowledging where improvements were made in future titles. Like, again, instant saving or the really nice graphics or music changing for each chapter. And while there aren't any WILD changes like brand new cutscenes in the Super Mario RPG remake, I'd say what they add and ultimately didn't add makes this such a wonderful remake all the same. I had a blast playing it and it felt so good to just, genuinely no coping love playing Paper Mario again!

Stuff I didn't like

But of course no game is perfect. And I do have some nit picks. Like, why don't they use Mario's official new signature when he signs up to join the Glitz Pit? No but seriously, folks-

There's not much wrong with this remake, there's some small stuff like them not fixing EVERY bit of fluff from the original. You still have to mash 100 times for the 'I Love You' scene. Which is funny! But like, no one complains about THIS but you all complain about a little backtracking? Amateur hour. I also think the Prince Mush fight isn't as cool as everyone says it is. I'm not huge on fights where you have to play 100% perfectly but I know that's just a me thing. And I wish SO badly they could've done a tiny bit more to have teammates interact with each other more. Although I do love that everyone comes out whenever you stand on the altar in front of the door. But like, I think everyone should've come out when the Crystal Stars are gathering everyone's wishes... OH MY GOD I FORGOT THEY MADE THE CRYSTAL STARS UGLY IN THIS REMAKE OH NOOOOO GAME RUINED-

But really, I think my big main complaint is that this remake feels a little... Too easy? Compared to the original. In the original the game is MASSIVELY padded out by having you get constantly fucked over by the stage elements. But this time I swear I got hit by a stage element maybe 2 or 3 times. But my enemy was CONSTANTLY getting fried or slammed to death in every fight. It's too common on the enemies, but feels like it's massively toned down on you. I think in the original you can get fucked over a bit much, but this doesn't feel like a compromise, if that makes sense?

Final Thoughts

But WHO CARES!! This remake is SO good! Genuinely, if you love Thousand Year Door, if you hate Thousand Year Door, if you've never played Paper Mario in your life. I think you owe it to yourself to finally experience this wonderful video game. It's truly one of my favorite video games ever and I think it's such a fantastic entry into the RPG genre.

From small changes to big changes, this is a wonderful remake. I don't know if I'd say it's a replacement to the original, personally. I actually think the original's more simple graphics have a GREAT and cartoonish feel to them that's lost a little bit with the papercraft look. And obviously nostalgia is a hell of a drug, but if someone told me they prefer this version? It's absolutely a no-brainer why. I'm so happy I loved this game so much...

Sooooo, how about that Paper Mario 64 remake, guys-

And that's that! Once again, I know I've said this a million times. But even though this remake was amazing and made me fall in love with Paper Mario all over again. I'm still waiting patiently for them to do a new Paper Mario in this style. I'm only so impressed that they made an amazing game amazing again. I want to know if they have what it takes to make something BRAND NEW with such a wonderful plot, characters, and combat. I'm very excited for the potential of future Mario RPGs regardless though, and I can't wait to see what's in store for us with Brothership. But Intelligent Systems, I AM wait for a new Paper Mario in this style. You've been warned.

2. Hmmm. So once upon a time I was writing an original fic for NaNoWriMo, and my two leads had been switched at birth, and were now somewhere in their twenties with a Whole Mess of Political Intrigue about to boil up around them. Ah... part of it is up on ao3, under "Jonathon Lily"? I never finished it and I was a lot younger so I make no claims to quality. I had planned on having them meet in a casino in a riverboat and some kind of brawl spring up but ended up changing my plans, but I still wanted that introduction of the FL kind of sweaty and louche so I kept the scene and shifted the POV to her little university friend Matthew. Who was just there to be a pair of eyes and possibly a sprech-hund, no narrative significance to speak of, invented on the fly. The little top-knotted fucker ended up dominating my plot. Another minor character did the same thing, when I wondered if two unnamed girls put in separate incidents to fill out the scene might be the same person, and if so how, and ended up with an incredibly complicated backstory and a touching relationship arc with one of the antagonists. Argh. I'm. I'm a bit of a pantser, I guess. (Still a bit sad I never finished the story. Oh well.)

7. Ah, that would be "My Adventure, by Belladonna Baggins nee Took". I'd been re-reading The Hobbit, and the opening chapter says that Bilbo's mother was kinda cool but doesn't give details, so I wanted to give her something to do. In this case, she encounters a couple of Elves who wants to visit the Sea and escorts them, and a lot of it is fun and games but also they encounter trouble on the way and when they finally get to the Sea the Elves (who are very young), immediately drop everything to travel west. So it was one of those fluffy fics with an undercurrent of tragedy, and I had So Much Fun doing Tolkien-style poetry you have no idea. (Also, a straight journey from The Shire to the Sea is very short and simple, so I came up with an arduous explanation for why they took a massive detour by following rivers. I regret nothiiing.) I think... I mean there's the excuse plot of the journey, but the actual plot is that Bilbo's Mother was also once young and longed to see mountains.

20. Awkward intimacy, I think. Enemies stuck tending each other's wounds and sheltering from a storm. Friends who don't know how to say I love you in words but their every action resounds with it. Navigating secrets and old pain as kindly as one can...

Hello again! I simply adored the headcanons you came up with for Matthew and Avery's story like omg it's all so good? Such delicious angst and lovely romance! Your backstory for Matthew is incredibly sad, but it also fits his character perfectly. I've always had a similar headcanon that he must've been very poor growing up and has a deep resentment of Neal because of it. His thick NJ accent (I have family from the "poor side" of Jersey and he sounds a lot like them) compared to Neal's upper class way of speaking is a big indicator of that for me. And I love that idea you came up with of the two of them often in each other's orbit by accident, but then Matt starts intentionally creating these "coincidences" for them. That's so cute and funny! I can easily picture it in my mind. I can see Avery snatching up some priceless pieces of art and just when she's about to leave Matt shows up like "I hate to interrupt your grocery shopping sweetheart but I'm afraid you've got too much stuff for the "10 Items or Less" checkout 😉" and then he takes some of the art she had and leaves lol.

And oh my goodness your little scenario of them casing a place as a couple and abruptly sitting down and asking each other how they felt about a particular painting from an emotional standpoint is super sweet I would definitely be the same as Avery and fall in love right then and there lmao.

Also, I saw that you're now writing for THE Daniel LaRusso yaaayyy I'm ridiculously excited! Ralph Macchio was one of my first childhood crushes, and to this day he is still a celebrity crush of mine. And Danny is a delightful character and I especially love how the actors and writers on Cobra Kai have made both him and Johnny evolve as people post the movie canon! So yeah, expect some requests for Danny from me in the future as well as my typical requests for Matt lmao

Hi Kelnon,

I honestly think Matt has real issues with getting in his own way. He hates the vulnerability that comes with being with Avery but craves it at the same time, it’s a constant war for him. He’s been taught it shows weakness, but with her it doesn’t feel like that, it’s almost natural. It fucks with him a little, esp when he starts revealing more about himself.

I think for me the indicator was the distain in which Neal said Blue Collar criminal, like it’s beneath him. Arguably Matt’s the one that has to work harder because he doesn’t have the same opportunities as Neal.

I think for both of them there’s always been an attraction but Avery is usually guarded when it comes to her work life and personal life intermingling so there wasn’t much opportunity to spend time together until he started orchestrating his own meet cutes. I also think he likes to see her a little riled up because it breaks that cold professional persona she’d created, he started to see the real her and he kinda likes it. I imagine that’s how their first time started. He turned up at another one of her heists, stole a bunch of art, they’re arguing/negotiating. She’s berating him, telling him what an asshole he is and he’s like but you kind of like it though don’t you, that I challenge you, I think you like it more than you let on and then he kisses her and it all goes to hell and their fucking amongst the artwork. He wakes up and all of it’s gone, he’s not even mad, he’s just standing there with half naked with the sheets wrapped around his waist smiling because she challenges him a little too.

I do think that Matt has a deeper appreciation for art, we see a little of it throughout the series. He has an appreciation for beautiful things. I feel like maybe as a kid when he needed to escape his home situation, museums were his refuge and that’s how his love started, I feel for him it’s more about the history and feeling the weight of it in each of the items.

I am writing for Danny, I write a small piece involving a hotel bar for him and his lady love. I really like the way they’ve expanded his character and built out him and Johnny. It’s a really well written series.

Teen Justice Headcanon of the Week

I'm currently on my way back home from the city for the holidays and I wanted to share something I've been headcanoning about Troy for a very long time

I have this ability to give a character with the angstiest and most tragic backstories. That is, if they weren't given a backstory already.

And we all know how Troy has a mysterious past that even THE Batwoman wasn't able to comprehend.

So, here's the tragic past of Donald Troy in my perspective (Please take note that this isn't canon and may make no sense)

For me, there's a reason why Troy is oblivious to certain things. I think there is a reason why he keeps his hair long, and I personally headcanon that he is afraid of needles, lightning, and the dark. I also headcanon that he used to be afraid of the water. And last but not least, I headcanon that he doesn't remember much about his past

Troy basically had an Eri backstory. Eri from My Hero Academia was a child who was used for her powers to take down the heroes or something like that.

Here's my take.

Troy is the child of a mad scientist who was obsessed with taking down Wonderous Man

WM found the lab and stopped the operation before it could get any worse when Troy was around 5 or 6, or at least that's what WDM had estimated his age would be. (I'm getting tired of writing WM so Imma just write Dane). When they first saw each other, Troy's first instinct was to attack since that's what he's been trained/modified to do. Of course, Dane easily restrained him which only scared Troy. Dane had comforted him and this is where he sees the serial number/code tattooed on his nape.

As it turns out, Troy doesn't have any birth records or any records at all. So, secretly, Dane took him back to Themyscira.

Now, onto the fears...

From an early age, he was genetically modified so that he'd be stronger than Dane. This is where his fear of needles comes from; he doesn't like the feeling, nor the sight of them since they remind him of what the scientists did. So taking him to the hospital has been very difficult because of this.

His fear of the dark comes from always being in a locked room with no one to accompany him and the only time they'd come get him is when it's time for another unethical experiment. He hates night time or at least used to. The only reason he's not entirely scared at night is because he can see the stars and the moon. But if you were to put him in a dark room with no way for light to get in, he'll feel like he can't breathe and he'll go into a panic attack. It only makes it worse that there's limited space.

His fear of lightning comes from the electric sparks of machines that were used on him. It died down as time passed but it still kinda scares him.

He actually got over his fear of water. His fear came from being drowned in a tub to make him stay awake during the experiments and from being drowned simply for torture or punishment. He only got over it after being taken in and Dane slowly showed him that the water isn't so scary (Which also gave him the love for sea turtles).

Growing up, Troy never really liked having short hair. For one, he really looked up to Dane and wanted to look like him. Secondly, he didn't like the serial number on his nape showing. It was no doubt he got insecure everytime people saw it and he would always cover it like his life depended on it.

The one thing I don't know if it's a good thing or not is that he doesn't remember much about his past. Dane doesn't know if his mind chooses not to remember or simply because he was too young to remember any of it at all. But the thing is, Troy doesn't even remember being adopted.

I actually have an entire plot dedicated to this so I might make a part 2 of this.
