Neil Headcanons:
(I have more hc but these are just a few I’ve written down)
After Mary dies, Neil sleeps with a pillow against his back. He can’t sleep without it there
When Neil is scared, he doesn’t make a noise, just either flinches or internally breaks down because screaming from fear or nightmare or whatever draws attention while on the run
Neil can’t cook with flavor at all. He sucks at it
Neil is a really good driver in every way besides parking. He cannot park to save a life. Parking was not essential on the run when he was a getaway driver so he never learned to do it properly
Neil picks at the skin on his lips so they’re really dry and chapped and scarred
He’s a nail biter and sometimes bites his skin to the point it bleeds
He had very few freckles due to lack of sun while on the run, but he still had some speckled over his face until they were cut/burned off during Baltimore
Neil slowly pierces parts of his body over the years to reclaim his body
He also gets a few small tattoos
He never properly learns to fight. All the Foxes take turns/bet on who can teach Neil to fight. Matt teaches Neil to throw a punch and it’s the farthest anyone can get
He jump-ropes at the dorms sometimes if he’s antsy and can’t trust himself to go on a run
Neil sometimes hates showers and finds them to be a hassle. He’s not used to showering so much because he didn’t always have access to a shower while on the run
He actually looks nearly exactly like Mary and less like Nathan. Mary just projected her anger for her husband onto Neil since he’s their son and said it was because he looked like Nathan. Neil actually looks like 90% of Mary but has similar hair and eye color to Nathan
Neil likes skirts but does not prefer to wear them outside the comfort of his home. He is not used to doing things that make people stare
Neil has a habit of needing to do something with his mouth so he chews gum sometimes (Nicky buys packs of them for him after Neil’s pens exploded in his mouth for the fifth time in a single week)
Neil makes dry, out of pocket jokes about his trauma randomly throughout a day
His favorite fruit is actually bananas but his favorite berry are strawberries
Nathan is polish so Neil knew polish when he was 10 but Mary beat it out of him because she thought it made him sound like Nathan
After staying in Palmetto, Neil becomes a sleep kicker because his body and mind are slowly processing all the trauma he went through and it makes sleep just chaotic (a temporary REM sleep behavior disorder)
Neil can’t grow anything more than peach fuzz on his face because Nathan’s male family genes don’t grow facial hair
In Neil’s second year, the Foxes all share their own meal recipes so they can each teach Neil to cook something that actually tastes like food
Neil’s favorite color is gray but his favorite color (that’s not muted) is blue
The reason Neil is not good with his fists in a fight is because he’s got better control of his legs and should be fighting with those instead (Renee is the one to realize this but since none of the foxes know how to properly use their legs in a fight, Neil doesn’t learn much)

more ghouls with halloween candy
swiss is suuuuch a sucker person. he loves blow pops but he'll take dum dums or others too! he also really likes those caramel apple suckers. another thing he really likes is gummies?? not really any reason but he does. he also likes gum. it's an oral fixation thing yk? :b he also will eat most things that are sour. he will swallow a ring pop whole. and lemon heads too.
phantom also loves gummies. he likes the texture and most things fruity. he hates anything banana flavored tho bc it tastes gross to him and also most cherry flavored things bc it reminds him of cough syrup. he also loves caramel but he has an issue with it sticking to his mouth and teeth so it always looks like a dog trying to eat peanut butter. ;-; he's also totally the type to love getting those little bags of cheeseballs in their halloween candy. would also swallow a ring pop or lemon head whole, much like swiss.
rain is such a chocolate guy imo. he'll eat some fruity things every once and a while but 3 musketeers, snickers, hershey's, etc- much more his thing. he has this weird opinion on dark chocolate tho where depending on his mood, he'll either love it or hate it. doesn't like white chocolate tho.
dew absolutely loves sour candy and i am a strong supporter of this hc (which i've heard from so many people). he loves sour patch kids, sweetarts, warheads, crybaby candy, literally just anything sour. he also really likes gum and will steal it from the others of they won't trade him. once again, would swallow a whole ring pop or lemon head.
mountain is mallow person. not just personality wise, but he genuinely just likes marshmallows. really almost any candy with marshmallow, he'll like.he also like the same kind of candy rain does so they commonly share amongst themselves. he's not a fan of sour candy tho. he just doesn't like the flavor and also it hurts his tongue. :( he also isn't the greatest fan of peanut butter bc of the flavor, smell, and often texture. he'll eat it sometimes but he really only likes it in sandwiches or reese's, not any other candy. he doesn't like butterfingers bc of the crumby, crunchy texture.
rory loves anything strawberry flavored, especially starburst. she loves any and all types of starburst candy but strawberry is her favorite. still refuses to try a twizzler. loves hershey's and likes dark and white chocolate but she prefers milk over all. she also doesn't like butterfingers bc of the texture. not really a sour candy fan but she does like fruity stuff.
lus isn't super picky. she doesn't have a preference between chocolate and fruity flavors. she loves hershey's, snickers, crunch, 3 musketeers, really anything chocolate. her favorite starburst flavor is also strawberry but she also likes the lemon ones. a sweetarts enjoyer.
cirrus loves peanut butter stuff. reese's and butterfingers are her jackpot. she also really like twix and hershey's. she's not much of a sour fan but she'll eat some of it. she does not like smarties, they remind her of chalk. i also feel like she'd be the type to bite her suckers to fuck with people and see them cringe.

Eating Thai Fruit Demands Serious Effort but Delivers Sublime Reward
Many delicious species in Thailand, “the Great Power nation of fruit,” require laborious peeling and careful chewing. Then there’s the sticky fingers and occasional disappointment.
By Hannah Beech June 22, 2020
BANGKOK — All across Bangkok, fruit juice is dripping off chins, dribbling down arms and splashing onto the city’s sidewalks.
This is peak fruit season in Thailand, when the rising mercury concentrates the sugars in the tropical bounty that is native to Southeast Asia.
The region’s fruits are like no other. There is a fruit encased in prickly armor that smells of a deep, dank rot. There is a fruit that emits a sticky sap when peeled and another that stains fingernails mauve for those craving its succulent flesh.
And there is the rambutan, which means “hairy thing” in Malay. With its crimson skin studded with green feelers, the egg-sized fruit bears more than a passing resemblance to a coronavirus. It is yummy.
With pandemic travel bans in place, Thailand’s economic mainstay, tourism, has been battered. The country of 70 million has had to rely even more on exports of its agricultural products, and a national fruit lobby group predicts that overseas fruit shipments will increase by at least 10 percent this year, despite the coronavirus.
Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has called Thailand “the Great Power nation of fruit.” Last year, the country ranked as the world’s sixth biggest fruit exporter.
But most of the fruit is exported to Thailand’s regional neighbors, with China its biggest customer. The prospects of expanding to large Western markets like the United States may be appealing, but face some daunting obstacles.
Less than 3 percent of Thailand’s fruit was exported to the United States. Distance is one problem, as are worries about fruit flies accompanying the imports. But the main reason for the low figure may be that Southeast Asia’s indigenous fruits have what Fuchsia Dunlop, a British author of Chinese cookbooks, calls a high “grapple factor.”
Many of the region’s fruits require serious commitment to eat: laborious peeling, careful chewing and the frequent spitting out of seeds to which meat stubbornly adheres.
To snack during office hours on a langsat, a demure cousin of a lychee with a peel that oozes a kind of natural super glue, is to submit to sticky fingers and sticky keyboards. Soap doesn’t help.
The meat is perfumed but each bite is fraught, lest teeth accidentally penetrate the bitter seeds. The langsat is worth it, but only just.
Unlike a banana’s easy extraction, dissecting a jackfruit is to hack through a jagged sheath, then painstakingly pluck out rubbery polyps that taste like overripe Juicy Fruit gum.
The process can consume an afternoon, and there are fruit vendors whose careers are dedicated to peeling jackfruit — a single specimen can weigh up to 120 pounds — and other complicated fruits.
At Talad Thai, Bangkok’s wholesale fruit market and the largest in Southeast Asia, there is an entire building dedicated to citrus and a gymnasium-sized section only for the mango, of which there are more than 200 varieties in Thailand.
The fruits at Talad Thai are often transported and peeled by migrants from neighboring Cambodia or Myanmar.
“I was so poor that I had to look for work in Thailand,” said Sing Dy, who was unloading a truck of fruit as sweat drenched her coronavirus face mask.
She hasn’t seen her children back in Cambodia for six months because of the pandemic travel ban, but she still sends most of her $20 a day salary back home.
Each year, regional newspapers relate various jackfruit-related deaths, mostly involving someone lingering under a tree with fruit looming above. In May, a man in southern India was injured by a falling jackfruit and required spinal surgery, only to discover at the hospital that he also had the coronavirus. (He recovered.)
In terms of showiness, the rambutan jousts with the dragon fruit, a neon pink mini-football covered in acid-green tendrils. To some, the experience of eating a dragon fruit, which grows on a cactus indigenous to South America, is a letdown after all that dazzling packaging: It’s a bland mush with tiny seeds that can require floss to dislodge.
Thais tend to approach milder fruit as a canvas for the fermented, spicy flavors that dominate the country’s cuisine. So guavas, rose apples and pomelos, the world’s largest citrus, are often served with a chili, salt and sugar dip to enliven the experience. Tart fruits, like green mangoes, are balanced with a sweet condiment that includes fish sauce, dried shrimp and shallots.
If someone’s fingernails are dyed purple at the tips, it likely betrays a preference for the mangosteen, a palm-sized orb that looks like an extra in a Super Mario Bros. video game. Beneath its woody rind are juicy segments that strike a Socratic equilibrium between sweet and sour.
Even a peach has nothing on a mangosteen when it is perfect, but the mangosteen is rarely perfect. Many are afflicted with a blight that tarnishes the white flesh an ugly mustard hue. Which fruit is blemished is unknowable before peeling, and so to eat a pile of mangosteens is an exercise in disappointment.
The salak is also called the snakeskin fruit because its casing is undeniably reptilian. Inside is a not-quite-crunchy flesh that, like so many of Southeast Asia’s native fruits, hovers between delectable and decayed. Some scientists have theorized the smell attracts rainforest primates, whose consumption and dispersal of the seeds helps the fruit take root for another generation.
The most infamous fruit, which stinks of death, is the durian. Buildings and taxis in Thailand have no-durian signs next to no-smoking signs.
The durian’s flavor elicits passionate, and polarizing, responses, with few indifferent about the fruit’s appeal or repulsiveness.
On the outside, the durian resembles a medieval torture device. Nestled inside the spiky shell are kidney-shaped lobes of custard. The flavor is somewhere between an off-peak Gorgonzola and a crème caramel, with a whiff of skunk.
Orangutans adore the durian. In Indonesia, where expanding palm oil plantations have destroyed the apes’ natural habitat, orangutans occasionally raid fruit orchards for sustenance. Farmers have responded by shooting them.
Even if the smell could be put aside — which is, frankly, impossible — the durian would still probably have the highest grapple factor among Southeast Asia’s endemic fruits. Thai exports of the fruit are mostly destined for China, where consumers tend to be more willing to work for their meals.
The durian’s greatest supporters hold out little hope that it will ever capture the United States market the way the kiwi charmed Americans in the 1970s, when marketers renamed the Chinese gooseberry after New Zealand’s national bird. It helps that the kiwi, with its fuzzy peel, is cute and easy to eat.
While some of Southeast Asia’s indigenous fruits are available in specialty markets in the United States, the flavors lack the vibrancy of those grown at home, aficionados insist.
Ubolwan Wongchotsathit is a second-generation fruit magnate, and she used to fly her durian as far away as Dubai and Melbourne before the pandemic forced her to use land and sea routes instead.
“Americans say they hate the smell of durian,” she said. “I don’t understand. It is sweet love.”

What are the preferred candy and/or breakfasts of the batfam in CEC?
Thesis-level reasoning would be appreciated.
Please and thank you. ;)
Bruce: Reese's Cups for candy, Alfred's waffles for breakfast. Alfred's waffles taste awful. They were an early recipe attempt gone wrong and Bruce latched onto the bad batches as a comfort food. Alfred can make normal waffles now but never does because Bruce's face goes :/
Dick: Sour patch kids. He used to sneak them on patrol and eat them one at a time from his belt, sucking on them when he was getting sleepy and didn't want to admit it, because being with Bruce was his favorite thing in the world. It still is in the top three. The flavor of the red ones in particular still have strong sense-memories of feeling safe beside Bruce. He couldn't eat them when Bruce was "dead." He eats them again now, especially when he's feeling down. And for breakfast? Chocolate chocolate chip pancakes, covered in plain yogurt.
Jason: Champagne truffles dusted with gold. Jason will eat almost anything, but an unfortunate side effect of going from homeless to billionaire is accidentally developing a bougie palate he used to mock. When he got back to Gotham, and when he found out Bruce didn't have cancer, he celebrated both by going out and buying a pound of them. His favorite breakfast, to what he hopes is Tim's dismay, is Tim's organic Lucky Charms.
Steph: Atomic fireballs. She leaves them around the cave sometimes because Bruce also likes them. She likes to chew them so they cronch, and this noise delights Cass and horrifies almost everyone else. Breakfast is scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, and OJ, because she likes the tastes and it makes her feel like she has her life together like a normal suburban family in a TV sitcom. You were probably expecting waffles, but those are her favorite "any other meal or snack" food.
Tim: Altoids. He eats the peppermint ones like popcorn. He used to sneak them out of Janet’s purse. Dick has been trying to convince him for years they don’t count as candy. Tim refuses to concede. His favorite breakfast is Jason’s expensive protein-added oatmeal with one of Alfred’s rare homemade bagels on the side. He keeps buying organic Lucky Charms. Cassandra: Gummy worms dipped in vanilla icing, and if that isn’t available, caramel sauce. Cassandra’s philosophy about candy is that if it doesn’t hurt her teeth she’s not getting enough sugar at once. Bruce will sometimes join her. Her favorite breakfast is also gummy worms dipped in vanilla icing, but this time, on toasted chocolate chip bread, with a fresh banana smeared with peanut butter on the side. Alfred does not allow Cass to choose the breakfast menu very often.
Damian: It used to be nothing, and then it was gummy bears, and then it turned into wine gums. This has nothing to do with the fact that Alfred considers it one of the sensible sweets, nothing at all. His favorite breakfast is a milkshake. This has nothing to do with the fact that in early days in Gotham, sneaking early morning milkshakes was one of the times Richard really, truly smiled. Sometimes, when he’s feeling Responsible, he mixes a scoop of kale powder in, because Tim told him this makes anything healthy.
Dev: Werther’s Originals. Tim tells people, loudly, that he’s actually in his late seventies, but is not beyond stealing a handful to eat. Dev usually has one in his pocket. His favorite breakfast is cold chicken strips from the hospital cafeteria, stashed in a minifridge overnight. Alfred has not yet convinced him that his favorite breakfast is actually hardboiled eggs (easy and also cold) but God in Heaven, he is trying.
Alfred: Pez. He has a little Batman dispenser that he usually keeps full with lemon ones. It was given to him as a joke but he ended up really liking the candy and the dispenser and he finds the little painted scowl sort of cheery. His favorite breakfast is toast and soft boiled eggs.

Ooh I love this prompt list! How about “Ah, the puppy dog face. Check mate, huh?”
Pancakes and Coffee Syrup
Opening the bathroom door again, he stops, freezing like a deer caught in the headlights when he finds his boyfriend’s father standing just outside the bathroom. From the way he’s dressed, it’s obvious he’s just come home from the overnight TK told him he was on.
“Good morning, Carlos,” he greets him calmly. Like this is a regular occurrence for them to run into each other outside his bathroom, and instead, not the first time ever that Carlos has spent the night in his house.
*
Carlos spends the night at the Strand household, Owen makes him breakfast in the morning.
30 days of Tarlos - Day 15
Carlos wakes up with a pleasantly warm body next to him. He opens his eyes to find soft green walls instead of his dark navy ones; it takes him a moment to realize he’s not in his bed, and therefore, not his apartment. The night before comes back to him in flashes like a dream. He remembers showing up at the Strand household, TK opening the door with a mischievous grin on his face before he pulled him in by his shirt, his mouth on Carlos’ before he could even say hello.
They’d stumbled towards his bedroom, touching and giggling like schoolboys as they kissed any inch of skin they could reach. When they got to his room, TK had pushed him on the bed, and all Carlos could do was watch in awe as this beautiful man smiled down at him. His green eyes shining as they crinkled at the corners before he climbed into his lap, stealing his breath with every kiss he gave him.
They’d spent the night making love, taking turns pressing into the deepest parts of their bodies until they shook with pleasure.
Carlos has always enjoyed sex, and knows he’s a good and considerate lover who knows how to please his partners. Yet he can honestly say he’s never had sex like the kind of sex he has with TK before. Everything is heightened with TK; his want and need for him are more intense than he’s ever felt with anyone else.
He looks down at the man in question; there are locks of soft brown hair in his face as TK sleeps with his head on his chest, his mouth parted in his sleep to the point that there is a small trail of drool from the corner of his mouth.
Carlos rolls his eyes at himself when he finds it adorable, he’s stupidly gone on this guy, but there’s nothing he can do when his heart thumps funnily over him.
He starts to move, shifting from under TK slowly and quietly, he’s unable to stop his smile when TK whines in his sleep and tries to cling to him. He considers staying for a moment, but he really needs to pee.
He heads for the bathroom to relieve himself. After washing his hands, he splashes some water in his face and steals some mouthwash.
“Captain Strand,” he croaks out, swallowing hard under the embarrassment he feels at getting caught half-dressed by his boyfriend’s father.
“I think if you and TK have progressed to having sleepovers here, instead of just at your apartment, you can call me Owen,” he says with an easy smile.
“Right, of course,” he answers, trying to be polite. “I’m going to get my clothes and get out of here; I’m sure you want to get some sleep, sir.”
“Are you saying if you stayed, I wouldn’t get sleep?” Owen questions, there is an amused twinkle in his eyes that makes Carlos wince. “Is that how loud you and my son are? I’m not going to get any complaints from the neighbors, am I?”
Carlos stares at him, his mind going completely blank.
How do you even answer that?
If it’s with honesty, then the answer to that would be yes, he and TK are very vocal in bed, but even though it’s obvious Owen is messing with him, he’s pretty sure that’s not the answer the man wants.
“Uhh – “ he tries, but nothing else comes out.
Owen chuckles amused with himself, and with him, it seems.
“I’m joking,” he assures him. “I don’t want to know at all if that’s the case.
Carlos presses his lips together and gives him a nod.
“I don’t go to sleep right away after an overnight,” Owen starts, he jerks his head towards the rest of the house. “I was going to make some breakfast. TK will get up when he smells the food. Why don’t you join me?” Owen continues with a smile and then looks at him up and down. “After you put some pants on, of course.”
Carlos can feel his face go hot from the root of his hair to his chest; it doesn’t help that Owen’s mouth twitches like he’s seconds away from laughing. He nods one more time.
“Good,” Owen says pleased, clapping his hands once. “I’ll see you in the kitchen.”
Carlos goes back into TK’s bedroom; his boyfriend is now spread out like a starfish, still dead to the world as he sleeps. He considers waking him up in a moment of panic, but in the end, with a sigh, decides against it. He puts on his clothes from the night before, grateful that his shirt didn’t have any buttons for TK to snap off in his usual impatience to get Carlos out of his clothes.
Walking over to TK, he leans down to press a kiss on the side of his face, smiling at the soft sound TK makes in his sleep before taking a deep breath as he leaves the room.
He likes Captain Strand, both professionally and personally, just because he also happens to be the father of the man he’s quickly falling in love with, doesn't mean he needs to be afraid.
Walking into the kitchen, he finds Owen stirring ingredients in a bowl.
“Do you like blueberry pancakes?” he asks, looking up from what he’s doing.
“Yes, I do,” he answers; honestly, he likes any type of pancakes.
“Great,” Owen says with a smile. “Blueberry for you and me, then, TK isn’t really a fan, he prefers – “
“ – Banana chocolate chip,” he says, shrugging when Owen looks over at him surprised. “I’ve made breakfast for him when he spends the night; he has a sweet tooth in the morning.”
Owen nods, the corners of his mouth quirk upward. “He does,” he says softly. “When we lived in the city, he would have a donut, a Danish or a bear claw, and some frosted monstrosity he likes to call coffee every morning. Even when it’s plain black coffee, he puts some kind of flavored syrup in it.”
Carlos makes a face as he agrees with him. “I know, there is caramel, french vanilla and hazelnut in my cupboards now," he tells him. “I dragged him to the store the other day to buy some things for dinner, and he was eyeing a bubble gum flavored syrup, I had to put my foot down.”
“Did he pout?” Owen asks, grinning when he rolls his eyes. “You caved, didn’t you?”
“He gave me the puppy dog face,” he explains, scowling when Owen laughs.
“Ah, the puppy dog face,” Owen chuckles, shaking his head. “Checkmate, huh?”
Carlos lets out a loud sigh, even though he doesn’t mean it. He has no problem caving to TK; he likes to make him smile, even if it’s over something gross like bubble gum syrup.
“Don’t feel bad, kid,” Owen says as he starts to pour the batter on a skillet. “TK perfected that face before the age of two, he’s a pro, and we’re all suckers for it.”
“That would explain why he’s so good at it,” he murmurs. “He makes it, and I find myself saying yes to whatever he wants.”
“He gets that from his mother,” Owen explains as he looks back at him with a sympathetic face. “It’s the green eyes; she has them too. She would turn them on me, and I would be putty in her hands.”
Carlos smiles at the tidbit of information; he doesn’t know much about TK’s mom. He doesn’t speak much about her, except when he does, he does it with deep affection, so he knows they’re close, maybe not as much as TK and his dad, but it’s obvious he loves her.
“Accept your fate now,” Owen continues as he warns him. “It makes life easier.”
“I have,” he answers, he stops for a moment before continuing, his heart jumping as he speaks. “Fact is, your son has me wrapped around his little finger.”
Owen looks at him for a moment, studying him, and Carlos lets him, not hiding away from the man’s scrutiny. He doesn’t want to hide his feelings from TK’s dad; he wants him to know how much he cares for his son and that he’s not going anywhere.
“From what I can see, the feeling is mutual,” Owen starts to say, giving him a meaningful look as he turns serious. “You know about New York and before we came here?”
Carlos nods, swallowing hard as he remembers TK telling him everything the night of the solar flares. TK didn’t want to start anything with him before Carlos knew what he was getting into, he told him about his ex, the pills, and the OD before asking him if he still wanted to be with him. Carlos had gotten out a broken yes before pulling TK into a tight hug, grateful that life hadn’t taken him away before he got a chance to know him, to love him.
“I didn’t think my son would be happy anytime soon after that,” Owen tells him quietly, the pain he feels for TK etched into every line of his face. He gives him a small smile after a moment of quiet between them. “But he lights up when he’s around you, doesn’t matter where, at the firehouse, the bar or a call, you show up, and he smiles. I don’t have the words to thank you enough for that.”
Carlos opens his mouth, trying to find the words around the lump in his throat. He wants to tell Owen that he doesn’t need to thank him, that it’s his privilege and honor to make TK happy. He wants to say to him that it’s all he wants to do, to make TK smile and joyful. He wants to tell him that he’s the one that’s grateful because having TK in his life is a blessing, one he’s thankful for every day.
He wants to tell the man before him that he’s in love with his son.
The look Owen gives him tells him he doesn’t need to say any of it, Owen already knows.
A moment later, Owen looks over his shoulder, a smile on his face, and that’s all the warning Carlos gets before arms wrap around his waist.
“I thought you had left,” TK mumbles into his back, his voice still thick with sleep. “But then I saw your shoes.”
Carlos turns, lifting his arm over TK’s head to wrap it around him, bringing him to his side. He looks down as TK cuddles into his chest and sees he still has his eyes mostly closed. “Your dad offered to make me pancakes.”
TK cracks open an eye, looking over at his father suspiciously. “Banana chocolate chip?” he questions, getting an eye roll back from Owen.
“For you, yes,” his dad tells him. “Carlos and I will be having blueberry pancakes.”
“Weirdos,” TK mumbles, now leaning more heavily on him.
“How about I get you some coffee,” he suggests walking TK over to the kitchen table and sitting him down.
“Hmm, yes,” TK moans appreciatively. “With two pumps of hazelnut, please.”
Carlos shakes his head at him before turning towards the coffee machine, Owen points at one of the cabinets where Carlos finds familiar bottles of coffee syrups. With two pumps into the coffee, he turns back to TK, who is finally looking more awake.
He smiles brightly at him as he gives him his coffee. TK takes a sip, letting out another pleased sound.
“Good?” he asks, smirking down at him.
TK bobs his head as he reaches for his shirt, tugging him down as he tilts his head up. Carlos lets him, closing his eyes as TK gives him a light kiss.
“Sweet, just like you,” he says, grinning up at him. Looking over at his dad as he starts serving the plates, he lowers his voice. “Everything okay? He didn’t give you a hard time, right?”
Carlos shakes his head as he thinks back to everything Owen just said to him, he looks over at the man to find him watching them with a soft look on his face. When he catches his eyes, he sees the joy and, once again, gratitude in his expression. Looking at TK, he sees the care for him in his.
“No, sweetheart,” he says, leaning down to kiss his forehead. “He was great.”
TK smiles brightly at him in response, happy just like Owen said, and it fills him with warmth to know he’s the cause.
“Everything is great.”

#12
1: when you have cereal, do you have more milk than cereal or more cereal than milk? more cereal than milk - nothing worse than soggy cereal.
2: do you like the feeling of cold air on your cheeks on a wintery day? love it!
3: what random objects do you use to bookmark your books? it used to be whatever was to hand but now I don’t use them and just remember the page number.
4: how do you take your coffee/tea? I haaaaaate coffee, if I was drinking normal tea (which is rare for me), i’d have it with a little milk and two sugars, but my go-to hot drink these days is lemon and ginger tea.
5: are you self-conscious of your smile? i’m self-conscious about every part of my body.
6: do you keep plants? not even plastic ones.
7: do you name your plants? see above. but if I did have them, i’d definitely name them.
8: what artistic medium do you use to express your feelings? does colouring in count? that or I dabble in writing but i’m not good at that and I haven’t tried it in a really long time.
9: do you like singing/humming to yourself? always!
10: do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach? on my front with one leg propped up at a 90 degree angle hahah.
11: what’s an inner joke you have with your friends? probably just quoting movies alllllll the time.
12: what’s your favorite planet? pluto! i also kinda love Saturn? also quite like Jupiter and Neptune.
13: what’s something that made you smile today? I had to get a bandage over my eye, but to hold it in place properly it was wrapped around my head and I laughed at myself as I was leaving hospital cos I could only imagine what I looked like.
14: if you were to live with your best friend in an old flat in a big city, what would it look like? the flat itself? probably very high ceilings as they’re all like that here. I do like the idea of a more modern one that's like, loads of glass everywhere. i’d like a flat to feel quite spacious too.
15: go google a weird space fact and tell us what it is! i’m too lazy to google and if I started that I would just read space facts all night, however I do know this one; if you screamed to someone next to you in space they wouldn't be able to hear you, as space is totally silent. you need air to carry sound vibrations, and there’s none of that in space. that’s mind-blowing!
16: what’s your favorite pasta dish? anything with pasta in it really. I am partial to an arrabiata though.
17: what color do you really want to dye your hair? I miss it being purple. i’d like to have gone for some sort of aqua-blue in my younger years, but it’s probably just as well I didn’t - I hardly have any healthy hair left because I dye it so much.
18: tell us about something dumb/funny you did that has since gone down in history between you and your friends and is always brought up. I do stupid things all the time so there’s no really good example, but one that springs to mind is when I got my hand trapped in a bus door when I was trying to get off haha.
19: do you keep a journal? what do you write/draw/ in it? no.
20: what’s your favorite eye color? I don’t have a preference.
21: talk about your favorite bag, the one that’s been to hell and back with you and that you love to pieces. my current favourite bag hasn’t really been to hell and back with me, but it is my newest one and I absolutely adore it. it’s a really nice shade of blue leather and the interior is like a baby pink colour, and it was a Christmas gift, and it goes perfectly with the majority of my outfits.
22: are you a morning person? not really.
23: what’s your favorite thing to do on lazy days where you have 0 obligations? eat and watch Disney or Netflix.
24: is there someone out there you would trust with every single one of your secrets? yep.
25: what’s the weirdest place you’ve ever broken into? I've never broken into anywhere.
26: what are the shoes you’ve had for forever and wear with every single outfit? these days it’s just my one pair of skechers that I wore to work all the time. that or I have an older pair of ugg boots that I now use to wear around the house as a form of slippers.
27: what’s your favorite bubblegum flavor? I only really eat chewing gum, and it has to be blue extra!
28: sunrise or sunset? depends on my mood. right now i’d go for sunrise.
29: what’s something really cute that one of your friends does and is totally endearing? on every occasion where I've gotten some good news (both examples here are for when I got accepted into college/uni courses that I've wanted for YEARS), she’s written me out a card - or a page on a notebook and sent a picture - and it has congratulations and little notes of encouragement on them.
30: think of it: have you ever been truly scared? yes.
31: what is your opinion of socks? do you like wearing weird socks? do you sleep with socks? do you confine yourself to white sock hell? really, just talk about socks. ok, here we go. I have many thoughts on this. socks must be worn at ALL TIMES when you are wearing shoes, and the only exception to this rule is if you are wearing flip-flops or something similar (and if that’s the case then your toenails need to be painted, but that’s a whole other story). i’ll NOT have this not wearing socks with trainers rubbish. I don’t really like socks being visible when you’re wearing trainers or boots (unless it’s the cut socks with boots that have the ruffles or something), so I almost exclusively wear those invisible socks. the idea of mixing white/black shoes with the opposite colour socks unsettles me greatly, but if they’re invisible it’s not as big a deal. odd socks didn't bother me when I was younger, but now they’re a giant no from me. and finally, fluffy bed socks are a necessity when you’re in your pj’s or loungewear. they are also the only acceptable socks that you can wear in bed; sometimes I wear them and sometimes I don’t, but I would NEVER wear normal socks to bed. I told you I had many feelings about this hahah.
32: tell us a story of something that happened to you after 3AM when you were with friends. probably just drinking - we don’t tend to stay up that late unless we’re on a night out lol.
33: what’s your fave pastry? ngl, I love croissants.
34: tell us about the stuffed animal you kept as a kid. what is it called? what does it look like? do you still keep it? my all-time favourite teddy when I was younger was a postman pat one that my younger sister ‘brought’ me when she was born. there was his black and white cat teddy too but that got lost when we moved house when I was 4. I do still have the postman pat one somewhere, i’m sure my mum kept it. other favourites of mine included a Quasimodo and an esmarelda but I don’t have them anymore.
35: do you like stationary and pretty pens and so on? do you use them often? Y E S. and i’m constantly buying more for college and uni. and i’m about to start teacher training and the stationary part of that job ALONE is enough to make it a dream job.
36: which band’s sound would fit your mood right now? I've been in a real 5sos mood recently if that counts?
37: do you like keeping your room messy or clean? I obviously much prefer it when it’s clean, however it’s the getting to that stage that I hate.
38: tell us about your pet peeves! people who don’t remove the labels from the bottom of their shoes. people who chew loudly or with their mouths opened (SERIOUSLY). those are the first two that came to mind and the thoughts alone are enough to rile me up so i’m gonna stop there haha.
39: what color do you wear the most? black or blue.
40: think of a piece of jewelry you own: what’s it’s story? does it have any meaning to you? my mum and dad bought me a pandora necklace; it’s a long black rope one with a large panda sort of charm/pendant hanging from it. I don’t wear it often. they bought me it when I graduated from uni in Edinburgh, and the panda is relevant because during my time there was the time that the two giant panda’s came to Edinburgh zoo. I always like that story.
41: what’s the last book you remember really, really loving? harry potter was the last one I (re)read (fu jk rowling), and i’m pretty sure the hp books are the only books I've ever reread so i’ll just go for them.
42: do you have a favorite coffee shop? describe it! I don’t drink hot drinks, so no. although there is a starbucks in our local cinema and I always love going in there cos the folk who work there are lovely.
43: who was the last person you gazed at the stars with? myself.
44: when was the last time you remember feeling completely serene and at peace with everything? ooft, I don’t think I've ever felt that.
45: do you trust your instincts a lot? yes, they usually tend to be right.
46: tell us the worst pun you can think of. my dad is so bad for these so I should be able to think of something, but nothing’s springing to mind.
47: what food do you think should be banned from the universe? BANANAS. or even better - BANANAS on PIZZA. curse to hell the idiot who came up with that - that fucker should be burned at the stake.
48: what was your biggest fear as a kid? is it the same today? the ocean. and yes. the vastness and darkness of it all actually makes me feel physically sick. even thinking about it now has given me that sort of feeling of PURE DREAD in the pit of my stomach. and also sharks. just a massive nope for me.
49: do you like buying CDs and records? what was the last one you bought? I don’t even have a means of playing cd’s anymore, but the last one I bought was all time low’s new album wake up sunshine, which got delivered a few days ago. I already bought the album on iTunes, but I wanted a physical copy of the cd too.
50: what’s an odd thing you collect? the only thing I collect (now) is concert tickets. before, I literally would keep every cinema ticket ever. I had tickets from films that were out in ‘06.
51: think of a person. what song do you associate with them? I thought of my mum and then I immediately thought of follow the yellow brick road from the wizard of oz because it’s her favourite film.

54: who’s the last person you saw with a true look of sadness on their face? my bestie.
55: what’s the most dramatic thing you’ve ever done to prove a point? i’d only ever be dramatic in talking hypothetically, so I've never really carried out anything that could prove a point (that I can think of, I may be wrong), but I can get pretty dramatic when ranting so...
56: what are some things you find endearing in people? people’s laughs.
57: go listen to bohemian rhapsody. how did it make you feel? did you dramatically reenact the lyrics? I don’t need to listen to it to know it makes me feel extra haha. and if you don’t dramatically reenact the lyrics, have you even truly listened to the song?
58: who’s the wine mom and who’s the vodka aunt in your group of friends? why? ok the wine mom could be one of two of my friends, because one really is a mother and could probably do with a few glasses of wine, and the other is just the mother of the group, and the remaining friend is the vodka aunt. and there’s no real reason, she just is the fun aunt who would buy her nieces drink when they’re underaged.
59: what’s your favorite myth? ohhh, that some people think humans and dinosaurs existed at the same time. HOW can that be true? these people blow my mind. also, one that we spoke about recently in college; that there is an autism pandemic. not true, we’ve simply come up with better ways and means of testing and/or diagnosing. many people diagnosed nowadays are adults who were misdiagnosed as children, and that’s a major factor in why there seems to be a spike. just interesting.
60: do you like poetry? what are some of your faves? I don’t really like it.
61: what’s the stupidest gift you’ve ever given? the stupidest one you’ve ever received? the stupidest one I've ever given wasn’t really stupid but more funny, which was beard baubles for my dad at christmas, and one of the stupidest one I've ever received what a keyring which was one of those balls of fluff, but it had like, a small baby doll’s face in it. it was terrifying.
62: do you drink juice in the morning? which kind? either water or a little diluting juice.
63: are you fussy about your books and music? do you keep them meticulously organized or kinda leave them be? I don’t have many of either, but they’re all alphabetical, by author/artist then by title.
64: what color is the sky where you are right now? practically black as it’s nearly 1am.
65: is there anyone you haven’t seen in a long time who you’d love to hang out with? yeh but that’s a definite no-go.
66: what would your ideal flower crown look like? there’d be some green, yellow, pink/purple, white, maybe blue. some daisy’s would be nice.
67: how do gloomy days where the sky is dark and the world is misty make you feel? depends on the season because if it’s autumn then I like it but if it’s summer then it sucks.
68: what’s winter like where you live? honestly? just the same as literally every other season - in Scotland you get four seasons in a day most days.
69: what are your favorite board games? I used to love this harry potter game I had which was similar to cluedo. anything that’s a quiz I like.
70: have you ever used a ouija board? noooooo and I never will. they’re also legit banned from my house.

75: tell us about your pets! in my lifetime my family have owened almost 30 pets including budgies, fish, hamsters, cats, dogs, lovebirds and gerbils. I only have one living pet now who is an all black cat. we had a doggo who was the best doggo in all the land and I miss him so much.

79: what’s one of the cutest things someone has ever done for you? probably a very nice or thoughtful gift.
80: what color are your bedroom walls? did you choose that color? if so, why? they’re pink, and I have two large mdf boards which are a mint green. and I did choose them, just under a year ago we were decorating the house and I fancied a change. shocked me to my core tbh cos pink is definitely not a colour i’d have thought to pick, but the pink and green match in really well with the grey I have picked out for soft furnishings and my white furniture so i’m happy.
81: describe one of your friend’s eyes using the most abstract imagery you can think of. i’m not gonna do that i’m so tired.
82: are/were you good in school? I was, I still give myself a complex when there’s even the smallest possibility of rule-breaking.
83: what’s some of your favorite album art? probably an all time low related one?
84: are you planning on getting tattoos? which ones? I have five already, but I have a list of more that I want in my phone. they’re all mostly small ones.

91: where do you plan on traveling this year? literally fuckin’ nowhere except to and from uni. thanks covid for blessing us w your presence.
92: are you a person who drowns their pasta in cheese or a person who barely sprinkles a pinch? drowns. always drowns.

94: who was the last person you know to have a birthday? my friend.
95: what are your plans for this weekend? oh, big plans. i’m gonna paint my nails and help my mum konmari her drawers and wardrobes. big, biiig plans.
96: do you install your computer updates really quickly or do you procrastinate on them a lot? on my last laptop I procrastinated on them so much that they would forcibly shut down my computer and install themselves eventually, to the point where it would take over 7 hours to do it, until I eventually gave up on it. with my new one though I do it right away and it’s done in seconds. believe me; lesson learned.
97: myer briggs type, zodiac sign, and hogwarts house? isfj; aquarius; slytherclaw (I was slytherin for years, and then was resorted as ravenclaw, and now every time I take one of those buzzfeed percentage ones, I get almost 25% per house, so I just chose to combine the two official sortings I got and be done with it).
98: when’s the last time you went hiking? did you enjoy it? wouldn’t say hike really, but last year at least, and I do enjoy that sort of stuff.
99: list some songs that resonate to your soul whenever you hear them. safe, six feet under the stars, and weightless, all by all time low, reckless by youmeatsix, December by neck deep.
100: if you were presented with two buttons, one that allows you to go 5 years into the past, the other 5 years into the future, which one would you press? why? if I went into the past I could fix a couple of monumental mistakes just to see if my theories of how things would have worked out are correct, but if I went into the future i’d with any luck be in my dream job so that’s a tricky one. the way i’m feeling right now i’d lean towards the past.

Chapstick
Tumblr media
Words: 1,815
MASTERLIST
A/N: I do not claim to, nor do I own Stranger Things; the concept, characters, plot, etc.
She was an avid chapstick collector. Her collection was her prized possession, and her dirty little secret. She was known for loving chapstick, she had one situated in a pocket of each of her jackets, on her bedside table, on her vanity, in her locker, and in Billy’s car. Just underneath her bed, in a hollowed-out jewelry box, laid her holy grail. Decorated with stickers all the way back from her childhood to now, She managed to keep the box a secret from all. That was, until the first night Billy slept over.
Her parents were attending a wedding in Indianapolis, and her younger brother had been shipped off to her aunt’s for the weekend, so the house was all hers.
She and Billy were pretty fresh into their relationship, only going together for about five months, but he could already feel a difference in himself. All the other girls he had been with before, whether it be short or long, weren’t her. They were rough around the edges, had very little emotions, and only wanted one thing. She, however, was soft, had more emotions than Billy knew possible, and wanted the world- and everything it had to offer. She stilled his raging heart, calmed his trembling hand, and kissed his frowning lips. He spent less time in detention, stopped picking petty fights, got along with his family, got better grades, and stopped going to as many parties. “Once a party animal, always a party animal.” He’d say. As of late, he much preferred spending time with her than being surrounded by people he hardly knew.
He’d be lying if he said that she wasn’t the greatest thing to happen to him in his short life. His father was a disgrace to the title “father”, his mother was a whore, and he received little to no affection his entire life. In addition to her kindness and carefulness, she was quite the looker. Beautiful at any and every moment, sweet and soft, his favorite piece of art.
Thursday morning she had practically ran into him with excitement. “Hey Bill.” She cooed, drawing his eyes from his locker down to her. He immediately smiled, leaning down to kiss her.
“Morning baby, how’s my favorite girl?”
“Pretty great if I do say so.” She was practically bouncing with excitement. “Aren’t you gonna ask me why I’m so happy?”
He tilted his head, smirking. “Why’re you so happy?”
“Well- since you asked, mom and dad are gonna be out of town this weekend, and they’re sending Sam to my aunt’s and I’m gonna have the house to myself. So, do you wanna sleepover?”
“A sleepover? What’s in the itinerary for this sleepover?” He turned to start searching through his locker for his math term paper. “Mani-pedis, romantic comedies, gossip?”
She scoffed, smacking his arm lightly. “No. I was thinking, movie marathons, maybe breaking into my dad’s mini bar. Oh and probably lots of making out.”
His head whipped to the side. This was a slightly different side to her than he knew. “Sounds like a good time to me. I’m in.”
She was telling the truth, mostly. She forgot to add that she finally wanted her and Billy to “seal the deal”, and what better time than when they were home alone? Listening to his response, she took the final detail and shoved it into the back of her mind. “Yay! It’s a date!” She leaned upwards, kissing his cheek.
A soft blush dusted Billy’s face at the sweet gesture. “I’ll be at your place at eight tomorrow? Sound good.”
“Perfect!”
With a quick kiss and fist bump*, the two parted ways for the day.
*It was just a cute little thing they did
Friday afternoon, she had left school right after the final bell, having Jonathan drop her off at her house. Her parents had already been gone, and her brother was being picked up from school, so the house was silent upon entry.
For a moment she relished in the quietness, before getting to work. She cleaned and tidied each room. Fluffing the pillows, and removing the cat hair from the couch in the living room, wet-mopping the floor and wiping down the cabinets in the kitchen, perfectly setting the dining room table (as if it was already party ready). She simply closed and locked the basement door, as there was no helping that room. Her parents bed and bath were always locked when they left for an extended time, so she needn’t worry about that. She disinfected and perfected her and her brother’s shared bathroom, and closed and locked her brother’s room- it looked like a tornado had hit it.
Then came her room. She vacuumed the carpet, put on clean linens and sheets, fluffed her pillows, made sure she had the softest blankets in the house, organized her besides table, dresser top, and vanity, and made sure her closet was neat and orderly. When she was finished, nothing was out of place. Her entire house was perfect, save the basement and Sam’s room.
She dug through her closet to find her other secret arsenal, her scented candles. She had collected a plethora of vanilla-rum candles that her aunt made her every year for Christmas. She took the bin out and set it on her bed, digging through it to pull out the box of matches. She lit a candle on the coffee table in the living room, one on the kitchen island, one on her vanity and her bedside table, and one on the bathroom counter.
The clock chimes seven times, and she began to get ready. She took a hot shower, shampooing and conditioning her hair to the fullest extent, shaving, making sure she was in tip-top shape for her late night plans. She dressed in her favorite cute pajamas, slightly blow-dried her hair, moisturized her entire body, and for good measure, slathered on a healthy helping of her bedside watermelon chapstick.
Promptly at eight, Billy arrived, duffel bag slung over his shoulder, and a bouquet of baby’s breath in his hand. “Evening Princess, brought you some flowers.” He leaned down to kiss her cheek as she happily took the bouquet.
“Baby’s breath are my favorite.” She breathed in their soft scent.
“I know.” He smiled, placing his bag onto the counter. “You baking a cake or something?” He sniffed the air.
“Nah. Just my favorite candles. Nobody lets me burn them when everybody’s home.” She shrugged, moving to the cupboard to find one of her mom’s canning mason jars. She filled it halfway with water and placed the flowers into it.
“Well I’ll let you burn whatever you want baby. Hey- they look pretty good in that.”
“We don’t own flower vases, nobody gets flowers from anyone.”
The couple stood in silence for a moment, each of them taking in each other.
Billy admired the way the candle light made her face dark, but her eyes were still gorgeous and bright.
She admired how soft he looked in the dim light, and how kind his eyes were.
“I’m gonna go grab a shower quick, if you don’t mind. It was pretty chaotic at mine.” She nodded at him. Neil was away on a work trip, and Max had convinced her mother to let the Party sleepover. Which resulted in literal chaos let loose in Billy’s home. “Why don’t you pick out a movie while I’m up there?”
He kissed her cheek again on the way by.
Two hours later they had watched the entirety of ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’, and she was ready to put her official plan into action. She yawned, snuggling further into Billy’s embrace. “You ready for bed kid?” Billy softly smiled at her.
“Yeah.”
“Why don’t you head up? I’ll blow out the candles and stuff. Make sure the doors are locked. Meet you up there.”
She sleepily walked up the stairs and to the bathroom. She checked herself in the mirror and quickly brushed her teeth, blowing out the bathroom candle and making her way down the hall to her room.
“Hey babe, I was thinking- what the hell are you doing?!” She stepped into her room to see Billy seated cross-legged on her bed, her empty chapstick box next to him, and a pile of chapsticks between his legs. He was carefully examining the varying flavors.
She rushed forward to grab the box. “Billy, how did you find this? Were you snooping on me?” She was genuinely horrified that somebody had finally uncovered her secret.
He looked over at her, holding a green apple Lip Smacker in his hand. “So this is the reason why you always taste so fruity... and why your lips are so damn soft.”
She rolled her eyes. “I don’t really like the green apple one. But you didn’t answer my question! Why were you snooping?”
He looked down again at the array of chapsticks. “You snoop on me all the time.” He shrugged, grabbing the Dr. Pepper one. “I know you keep a damn chapstick on you at all times but I didn’t think it was this bad.”
She groaned, tossing the box at him. “This is so embarrassing.”
“Baby, if a collection of chapsticks... and lip glosses?”
“For special occasions.” She grumbled.
He chuckled at her. “If a collection of lip products is your biggest secret then you have nothing to worry about.” He uncapped the Root Beer one and swiped it across his lips. “I can see why you like these things so much, they’re pretty neat. And they don’t taste half bad either.”
“I never even got to try the Root Beer yet!” She snatched it from his grip.
He grabbed her wrist, pulling her onto the bed with him. “Then taste.” He pressed his lips to hers, making sure she got a taste of him and the chapstick.
She pulled away, and he raised his eyebrows. “I agree, a very good flavor.”
She had completely forgotten about her prior agenda as Billy came up with the brilliant idea to take a “Chapstick Inventory”, they narrowed it down to their mutual favorites, and whatever flavors they didn’t like, he’d take home for Max.
Lemon, watermelon, honey, cherry, peppermint, Dr. Pepper, grape, lime, banana, raspberry, and chocolate stayed. And green apple, strawberry, passion fruit, piña-colada, orange, kiwi, and bubble gum went to Max.
Billy kept Root Beer for himself.
What was once just her dirty little secret had now become their “thing”.
A quick kiss. Billy would always lick his lips right after. “Mm, what flavor was that?”
The answer was always different. “Banana.”, “Raspberry.”, “Lemon.”, etc.
But their favorite was always Root Beer. For it reminded them of their first “sleepover”, vanilla-rum candles, baby’s breath bouquets, soft velvet comforters, and the warmth of each other’s embrace.

Yet, there is always one common treat that will serve as Ol Reliable – and that is the cool taste of ice cream. From gelato to sorbet, sundaes to Italian ice, our agents all around NY, NJ and CT have the best recommendations for your next summer treat.
The Lemon Ice King of Corona
52-02 108th St, Corona, NY 11368
When you want some fun, a change of scenery and the perfect cool treat on the dog days of summer, look no further than The Lemon Ice King of Corona, Queens! “This family owned business with a homemade, secret recipe offers 100 flavors of the best Italian ices in all of New York, dare I say the world!” says agent Maryann Johnson. “On a hot summer night, my girlfriends and I would get in the car and drive on the LIE to 108th Street Corona and order not one, but two or three of the most flavorful, homemade, fresh summer flavors, like lemon, coconut, watermelon, mango and so much more!” The Lemon Ice King has been a unique and colorful dessert destination for over 60 years. Stay and enjoy your ice while watching a traditional and competitive Bocce game in Spaghetti Park, or head over to Citi Field and cheer on the NY Mets.
(Recommended by Maryann Johnson of our Upper West Side office)
Milkcraft
1215 Post Rd, Fairfield, CT 06824
“New technology ice cream with lots of novelty makes Milkcraft a Connecticut staple,” says agent Sheila Higgins. The trendy creamery freezes every scoop to order with food grade Liquid Nitrogen, which creates smaller ice crystals when freezing, and results in the smoothest possible ice cream. Their caramelized Hong Kong style waffles are made from scratch to order and their hot Creamee buns are made fresh daily, along with artisan toppings.
(Recommended by Sheila Higgins of our Wilton office)
Emack and Bolio’s
389 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10026
Emack & Bolio’s is so good that The New York Times called it “an ice cream shop with more than a lick of promise” and Good Housekeeping labeled them as “the best ice cream purveyors in the country.” Talk about a seal of approval. According to agents Keith Marder and Olga Bidun of the OK Team, their best flavors include ice cream based Deep Purple Chip, S’Moreo, salted caramel chocolate pretzel, chunk of funk and grasshopper pie as well as “The Original Oreo.” They also have sorbet and low-fat options. “Most flavors have great texture with the addition of Oreos, chips, pretzels, etc. and for some added crunch you can get a gargantuan waffle cone dipped in things like Nutella, Cookie Krisp cereal, sprinkles and Capt’n Crunch,” says the team.
(Recommended by the Olga and Keith Team of our West Side office)
Sugar Hill Creamery
184 Lenox Ave, New York, NY 10026
An indie ice cream shop in Harlem, this family-owned spot offers scoops (including non-dairy varieties) in both familiar and creative flavors.
“They use really high-end ingredients and have funky, savory flavors. In the summer they need to have an employee making ice cream all night long to keep up with summer demand.” – Jeffrey Green of our Harlem office
“Sugar Hill Creamery has an old-fashioned neighborhood feel with an artsy flair from the mural on the wall to the roasted corn and jalapeno flavors. The owners are there scooping and greeting folks at the door!” - Leanne Stella of our Harlem office
Saugatuck Sweets
575 Riverside Ave, Westport, CT 06880
A unique spot located in the beautiful river-front inlet neighborhood of Saugatuck in Westport, Connecticut. Nothing like a moonlit night sky near the waterfront and an awesome ice cream cone creation of your own making,” says agent Sheila Gallo. Saugatuck Sweets is within walking distance from the train and serves as an easy night out of Manhattan.
(Recommended by Sheila Gallo of our Westport office)
Anopoli Ice Cream Parlor and Family Restaurant
6920 3rd Ave Brooklyn NY, 11209
In an age of trendy ice-cream shops dishing up exotic flavors, agent Shira Rosenhaft always loves to visit this tried and true time capsule of a diner and soda fountain that happens to make their own ice cream, too. It’s like stepping back in time - the Kelly-green booths are the perfect place to enjoy an old-fashioned sundae or a root beer float, and much of the place looks unchanged since the early 1900s. The ice-cream flavors are simple - chocolate, vanilla, pistachio - but delicious. And, its central location amongst the hustle and bustle of Third Avenue’s shops and restaurants in Bay Ridge makes it the perfect spot to stop and cool off.
(Recommended by Shira Rosenhaft of our Global Services office)
Ample Hills Creamery
623 Vanderbilt Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238
Extraordinary ice cream is an understatement when it comes to Halstead favorite, Ample Hills Creamery. At one point in time cows grazed on Brooklyn's lush ample hills. Although the cows are gone, and the grassy hills have made way for rows of brownstones, the pastoral small-town spirit of old Brooklyn lives on at our neighborhood ice cream shops and in the playful, nostalgic flavors we create.
“What makes Ample Hills ice cream special is the mix-ins. My personal favorite is the Pistachio Brittle. They make pistachio brittle (think “peanut brittle”) and put large chunks of it in wonderfully flavored pistachio ice cream. The flavors are creative and unique with fun names and again, those mix-ins!” – Jenet Levy of our Park Avenue office
“The Ample Hills Creamery down on Union Street in Gowanus is a favorite stop.  Located at the corner of Union and Nevins, it stands out as an oasis in the post-industrial landscape. And of course, the Ice Cream is fantastic.” - Lisa Gaytan of our North Slope office
“Flavors change regularly, and they are currently offering Oooy Gooy Butter Cake and PB Wins the Cup among many others - plain and fancy!” - Perri Defino of our Bed-Stuy office
“Best ice cream by far is Ample Hills. Specifically, the vibe of the Vanderbilt Avenue location. Peppermint Patty with hot fudge is to die for. My boys always go for Chocolate Milk and Cookies and my husband is partial to Salted Crack Caramel. The staff is always full of energy, super nice and the cone size is enormous! Gets my vote for best ice cream in NYC!” - Karen Wolfe of our Park Slope office
Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory
1 Water Street Brooklyn, NY 11201
What is better than waterfront ice cream with views of Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge? “The Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory is one of Brooklyn’s best ice cream shops,” agent Jared Goodloe says. Whether you are taking the ferry after a long day, walking your dog along the pier, or just out on the town Brookly Ice Cream Factory is the perfect stop. “Due to high demand, the line can be a little long but don’t let that stop you. The factory has a vast assortment of flavors and toppings to fit all your desires,” Goodloe says.
(Recommended by Jared Goodloe of our Park Slope office)
Gofer Ice Cream
1020 Boston Post Rd, Darien, CT 06820
Gofer Ice Cream opened in 2004 in the heart of Darien on picturesque main street. People passing by can see families enjoying their unique products like Gofer Lite, Go-Yo, Milk Shakes, Razzles, Gofer Cakes and more. It is a favorite spot for locals to walk or bike into town for a summer treat. The shop features a few small tables inside, but most people prefer to sit out on the patio watching the buzz downtown. They have been so successful that agent Cheryl Williams placed them in a second location in Wilton, CT in 2014 near the Wilton High School, Wilton Deli and adjacent to the football field. You can hear kids across town asking their parents if they can "Go Fer" ice cream tonight!
(Recommended by Cheryl Williams of our Darien office)
UES
1707 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10128
This ice cream shop is like no other (keep reading for the secret info!). The large neon cone awning strikes you from a distance along with the typical line of patrons eagerly awaiting entrance, but nothing is what is seems.  The vibrant and cozy bubble-gum pink shop offers a unique rotating menu of delicious flavors such as banana brownie, ginger and espresso cookie coupled with chocolate chip and M&M cones. Why is everyone dressed to impress for ice cream? Say the magic words and you are transformed to an elegant 1920s prohibition-style speakeasy behind the mystery door serving decadent cocktails at the large bar or tufted banquets outfitted with chandeliers, exposed brick and other classy homages to Upper East Side culture. But you’ll delight on the yummy ice cream in over 15 flavors and tons of different toppings,” says Turner. If you don't feel like ice cream, you can order a good old grill cheese sandwich or burger.

Bischoff's Confectionary
468 Cedar Ln, Teaneck, NJ 07666
The best ice cream in NJ, and in Sabina L. Feiler-Fluger’s opinion, the entire country, is at Bischoff's Confectionary in Teaneck, NJ. Going to Bischoff's was like winning the lottery when she was a kid. “We would select a flavor and sometimes sit at the bar, or at the booths in the back and the ice cream was always served in old school, metal dishes on top of a small white ceramic plate. They still do that today,” explains Sabina. This place is legendary and exactly what you would imagine a traditional ice cream parlor to look like. It opened in 1934, has been family run through generations. It still maintains relics of a 1950's style parlor with wood paneling, an antique mirror with the logo etched on it, two sides to the shop- one with ice cream in a multitude of flavors scooped out of antique metal freezers, and the other side sells candy- chocolates, hard candy, gummies, even toys. “They have the BEST coffee chip ice cream, and all sorts of flavors- basic and unique, even weekly specials,” says Sabina. They have been written up in many publications as one of the top places to go in NJ for ice cream.

Snacks and you
Tumblr media
With school coming up (or already starting for some of you!), I know it can be such a hassle trying to get everything ready to get back to campus or to simply get everything ready to begin school. This year it’s different and even more stressful! With the pandemic, face masks, online school, etc., getting ready for school is even harder than it used to be. Who has time to think about food with twenty other things on the brain?
This year, as I make my way back to campus (finally!!), I realize I won’t be rushing to class except once a week. That means I'll be sitting around my dorm room with my laptop. What’s the one thing I do when I’m bored? Snack! I snack on anything and everything (candy, potato chips, fruit, you name it) that finds itself within my reach. This semester, as I live in an apartment-style dorm that’s right down the street from our campus store, I’m determined to cook healthier and stop snacking!
I have three secrets when it comes to snacking:
I chew gum
I cook hearty meals that fill me up
Or, should 1 and 2 fail me: 3. I get a healthy, filling snack
I often times find myself chewing at the insides of my lips. This is painful and it becomes a bad habit quickly! What I do when I’m home for the summer (or for quarantine), I grab food to stop chewing on my cheeks. This is nearly as bad as my cheek chewing habit. Chewing gum negates this habit, and it gives me a minty taste in my mouth. Not only do I enjoy that, but it also simulates the “I just brushed my teeth” feeling, making me less likely to eat.
When you’re full, you’re less likely to snack. Now, I’ve had (many) times where I’ve had a big meal and then got up to grab a snack less than half an hour later. So this isn’t a surefire thing, but it definitely helps! I won’t put any recipes here, but anything that features protein (tofu, beans, meat, etc.) is bound to be filling.
Snacking is sometimes unavoidable. Whether you’re eating a to-go breakfast, cramming something in your mouth in between zoom meetings, or grabbing the most available (i.e., closest) food, snacking is just a part of the day.
Before I get into which snacks are more nutritious for you, here are a few tips on how to actively choose healthier snacks:
We’ve all heard it said many times before any time we look up advice on how to eat healthier. Keep the junk food out of the way! If it’s harder to reach, you’ll be less likely to eat it. If this means keeping it on a high shelf, towards the back of the pantry, or putting a blanket over the cake container, try not to let yourself physically see it! This can be hard, and, if you live at home or with roommates, some members of the house may be a little aggravated if you start shuffling things around. I know that whenever I’m with my family, we have a shelf in the pantry about chest-level where we keep the candy, small desserts, and snack-sized chocolates. I don’t think I’ll be able to move that around, since it’s been there for nearly five years (the space dedicated to the candy, not the candy!). It’s especially hard when I open both doors of the pantry and see granola bars on my right and chocolate on my left. If you find yourself unable to move food around, try to have an image in your mind about what you want to snack on. If I think about a granola bar for most of the day and how we have just the kind I like, I’ll be more inclined to grab one.
The second tip I have is a little harder to follow, especially if you’re somewhere with people who share food with you. If you’re able, keep junk food out of the house! Avoid the candy aisle in grocery stores, and don’t even think about the freezer section filled with your favorite frozen treats. (An extra tip on grocery stores: stick to your list! And yes, writing dessert on your list is cheating)
Thirdly, ask yourself if you would eat an apple (or a banana). If the answer is no, you’re probably not hungry. If you really wouldn’t eat an apple because you “just don’t want an apple” (oh how I’ve used that excuse before!), ask yourself the same question with a different, healthier option before you grab the new bag of potato chips that are calling your name.
The last tip I have is mind-blowingly simple: drink water!! Drinking water is good for you, and it’s actually a natural appetite suppressant and can help you lose weight.
When you feel like you just absolutely have to eat something, regardless if you’re hungry or bored, here are some good snack options!
Fruit
Any sort of fruit, whether it’s an apple, a banana, a handful of blueberries, or a mango! Fruit is always a delicious option that works no matter the time, day, or season! I personally adore peaches, even if they’re straight from a can.
Vegetables
Whether it’s baby carrots, a veggie tray, or a whole tomato, vegetables are an amazing option to snack on
Peanut butter and celery or graham crackers
If you’re allergic to peanuts, try almond butter! If you’re allergic to nuts in general, try sunflower seed butter! You can do ants on a log (raisins, peanut butter, celery) and it’s still just as good, but I’m not a big fan of raisins. You can try unsweetened/dark chocolate chips for that healthy chocolate crunch!
Yogurt
I really like flavored yogurts, although plain, 2%, or fat-free is your best bet to be the healthiest option. Try it with loose (plain) granola for a crunch! I like to call that “interesting cereal”
Nuts
Nuts are super healthy! Pistachios, peanuts, cashews, almonds, and walnuts are all wonderful! No matter which nut you choose, unsalted is always healthiest! Unless, of course, you’re allergic. Maybe steer clear of this one if you are
Granola bars
Chewy, crunchy, Nature Valley, KIND, Clif Bars, Quaker, whatever your preference, granola bars are awesome! Be forewarned of just how much sugar is in whichever type you choose (less than 10 grams is optimal)
I’ve kept these options simple. I know when I think of snacks, it’s usually the prepackaged stuff. I’m not looking to spend more than five minutes in the kitchen trying to make myself a snack. I consider dipping graham crackers in peanut butter “making myself a snack.”
