Oof. Y'all, can I get more comparisons of Tim being Bruce's dad? Not in the literal sense, but as in Tim's role in their relationship.
The other kids were adopted by Bruce. The man took care of them and saw them as his kid.
Tim? Tim adopted Bruce as his to take care of. He ensured that man survived and maintained essential upkeep tasks (like sleeping, receiving medical care, eating, etc.). The relationship eventually morphs into being more mutual on taking care of each other, but it starts the exact opposite of Bruce's relationship with the rest of his kids.
I just want Tim, trying to explain to his siblings why he has a different relationship with Bruce, and they come to the conclusion that he basically fathered Bruce out of his all-encompassing grief.

So... what exactly are executive functioning supports...?
Planners, checklists, and reminders are definitely executive function supports, but they aren't the only things that are available. ...so, I've made a list of some examples. A thread (🧵)
Executive functioning includes so much, so executive function supports can be SO MANY things. Executive functions include decision making, working memory, task initiation, planning, prioritizing, many forms of self-regulation, and more.
So let's talk in broad categories
Category 1: Decisionmaking
Avoiding a decision altogether,
Choosing randomly,
Reducing the number of options to decide between,
Always doing the same decision (such as having a uniform for yourself),
Outsourcing decisions,
Having outside structure/expectations
Category 2: Working memory
Keeping things visible,
Reminders,
Collaborators who gently remind you of things,
Writing it down (i.e., notebooks, post-its, to-do lists, etc.),
External structure such as lunch hours,
Understanding why and how working memory fails
Category 3: Information processing
Avoiding weak processing areas (eg. reading for dyslexics like me)
Have information in multiple forms,
Make information processing context relevant,
Reduce incoming information or competing demands
Category 4: Task Management
Body doubling,
Transition time,
To-do lists,
Breaking tasks down (including people to help with that),
External structure for identify the next step,
clear, explicit instructions,
Schedules, planners, itineraries.
Category 5: Organization
Mind maps,
Labels,
Notetaking templates,
Physical organizers,
Organizing methods (Kondo, Only 4 Things, etc.),
House cleaners, professional organizer, etc.
Clear bins,
An ability to toggle visibility
Category 6: Cognitive Flexibility
Transition time,
Pre-change warnings,
External support for identifying and reminding the new direction,
Context-based exemplars of similar change,
Visual schedules,
Reminders of when structure will start again
I've listed a lot of things here, but there are just so, so, so many more options.
Executive function supports can be ways that we think or approach situations (internal) or structures imposed on us by others (external). They can be physical tools that we can touch and interact with (tangible) or completely abstract ideas or approaches (intangible)
The big takeaways are that executive function supports can be any tool, structure, or communication that supports any of our executive functions.
Executive functioning struggles are core to the ADHD and autistic experiences (and secondary to other ND conditions). This means executive functioning takes a lot of energy for ADHD and/or autistic people, and the more support we have the more energy we can use for other things
So, yeah, planners, checklists, and reminders are definitely executive function supports, but so is a highschool bell schedule, hobby-related groups, professional services, and colleagues (consensually) harassing you to remember to send that email.
There are a lot of options!

listen i do appreciate canon marineford for the tragedy it is. however it does happen to also be extremely funny.
ace is on his knees on the execution platform, the same place the father that he despises and has tried to define himself outside for his whole life had knelt, thinking this might be the most fitting ending to the life long crashout ace started when he found out who his father was
and then in comes LUFFY, his cheerful persistent little menace of a brother, who has come to COP CENTRAL to break ace out PUBLICLY.
Not only that, but he’s staged a mass break out of the formerly inescapable prison IMPEL DOWN (HE WASNT EVEN LOCKED UP IN THERE? SO EVERYONES A LITTLE BIT CONFUSED AS TO HOW THAT HAPPENED???)
He also kind of looks like shit? But he’s fighting like he’s on day three of a methamphetamine high so no one can be sure how injured luffy Really is.
side note: luffy tanked a lung full of Kills You Dead Toxin and then got shot full of Lowers Your Lifespan Drug and on top of all that, DEMANDED the Super Lowers Your Lifespan Drug when he realized he might need anything resembling recovery time.
as an elder sibling myself, ace might’ve been truly grateful for being loved at the end, but i KNOW there’s a part of him that was INFURIATED that his kid brother managed to crash out harder than he did like OMG STOP COPYING ME FRRRRRRRRRR.
#one piece#marineford#portgas d ace#my posts#imagine being upstaged at your own execution by the snot nosed kid brother you used to bully for sport. PERSONALLY I WOULD BE FURIOUS.#ace looks at luffy like: surely his disregard for his own life and reckless actions have nothing to do with my influence on him as a child.#surely not!#ace and sabo raised each other and luffy. and i do think that the crashout gene that the three of them seem to share is directly bc of that#like luffy and sabo were professional crash outs before. like there’s a certain level of ‘idc if i get beat to shit i’m taking you with me’#that growing up fighting tigers and bears and wolves or whatever instills in a person#but after marineford? you cannot tell me that luffy and sabo aren’t fighting for the empty throne of crashout king in aces honor.#sure they have REASONS for what they do. but the casual disregard for ANY personal consequences post marineford is kind of awe inspiring.#after luffy beat enels ass with the golden mii fists after getting his ass beat into the ground three full times i truly thought that#was as far as luffys ‘crashout harder than my opponent’ strategy went. pre time skip luffy crashouts are NOTHING compared to post time skip.#and given how sabo is rolling in the manga rn he’s doing the same thing#like it’s one thing to want to fight someone bc they fucked with a homie#it’s another thing entirely to think the solution is shouting your name address and social security at them repeatedly#before you fight Unkillable David the Destroyer with nothing but hands flip flops and a dream#before marineford he was somewhat cognizant of his own mortality. not by much mind you but enough to have that shit make him pause for a#second#i promise that if crocodile had the same amnt of advantage over luffy and tossed his ass into the sandpit after beating luffy to a pulp#luffy would EAT the sand and get back to fighting crocodile#crashout is an excellent word. that describes such a specific state of mind and set of actions. and it is THE most succinct answer to the#question: what the fuck is wrong with the ASL brothers.#the only difference between an irl d1 crashout and monkey d. luffy is that he’s dodged most if not all consequences.

Problem: laundry is boring
Solution: bury phone in pile of to-be-folded clothes so that you cannot pick it up and must instead fold your clothes to access it
Subsequent Problem: Spotify Ad comes on and makes this unbearable
How This Is Actually A Good Thing: makes you more motivated to hurry up folding so you get to your phone and mute the ad

ADHD task completing tip
okay so growing up i was usually told "do the hard thing first and then you get to do the fun thing." and generally that's reasonable.... if you've got decent executive function. but for those of us who don't, this is a thing i've been using to get through school/work/general human functioning. It's still using hard thing/fun thing, but it interweaves them WAY more
first step: find something that sparks some dopamine quickly. i usually use short-timer online chess or mobile games. if you pick scrolling social media or something that doesn't have a clear endpoint, make sure you have an easy way to set a timer. On apple phones, there's a timer setting that says "stop playing" instead of playing a sound. I love this because it'll take you to your lock screen so you can't accidentally dismiss the timer and keep going. Do NOT make this movement or taking care of bodily functions; eating/hydrating/going to the bathroom/moving around are things you can and should do when your body tells you. take care of ya self
second step: look at your task and break it up TINY. If you have to write a paper, don't break it up by paragraph. break it up into something like fifty words. Cleaning a room: ten items put away. Close reading: 1 page. Really you want something that if your executive functioning was playing nice you could do in 1-4 minutes. I recommend NOT saying "work for x minutes" however, since that's a really quick way to sit there watching the clock. You wanna tie progress to completion not time spent.
third step: estimate how many levels/games/etc of your dopamine source it takes to last 1-5 minutes. Ideally you will already have a sense of this. I'd advise not "testing it out right now" and procrastinating that way.
fourth step: get to work. every time you complete a tiny task, you can do one unit of the dopamine thing. If you get some momentum, you can stack rewards, so if your tiny task was 50 words for one mobile game level, 150 words straight would be three levels. If you are having a really hard time getting going, you can start with 1-3 units of your dopamine thing to kinda jumpstart the process, just decide how many you're doing first so you don't lose hours to it.
note that this ONLY WORKS if you don't ignore your timer/level cutoff. The idea is to get dopamine levels up and use that to power through the next tiny task.

xiaochen, to me, is like. li tianchen is building a house of cards. liu xiao tells him that card houses are fragile so you have to be strong enough to withstand the event of them falling eventually. but li tianchen's card house hasn't fallen yet! so li tianchen just keeps building the house of cards and puts his identity into being a really good builder of card houses. liu xiao maybe even gives him more cards and compliments his house making skills. and it's like. "wouldn't it be fun to topple it later? just pull out one card, and woosh! it's all gone in a second. doesn't that sound fun?" and tbh li tianchen would (and has) enjoy(ed) toppling card houses, but only if it's other people's card houses. this one though? he just built this card house after the last one fell apart and he's gonna be inconsolably upset if this one falls apart too. and it does fall apart — spectacularly, even, that all the cards get blown away by the wind and li tianchen doesn't have any cards anymore to build a new card house. maybe he doesn't want to build a card house anymore. can't be a good card house builder without cards.
so liu xiao offers to play a new game with him. remember when your card house fell apart, tianchen? there are other games like that, games we can play that don't need cards. we can play dominoes. we can play jenga. half the fun is watching something you construct fall apart, you know? here, I'll teach you how to play. do you want to play?
and li tianchen is like. well I don't have cards anymore. I'll probably suck at playing other games, but it'd be nice to play games with someone else. what else is there to do? liu xiao gave him cards earlier, so he might as well see what other games he plays.
liu xiao asks him if he wants to play cards and li tianchen tells him nah, liu xiao should choose what they play. liu xiao smiles and brings out the jenga set.
li tianchen doesn't know how to play jenga but he learns quickly. he misses his cards but it's fun taking turns playing jenga with liu xiao. they're constructing something together! li tianchen isn't playing alone. that's nice. liu xiao wants to play games. li tianchen is good at playing a game; maybe he can be good at playing more than one game.
then liu xiao tells him that this jenga tower will fall too. that's all part of the game. li tianchen understands this. it'd be less upsetting if li tianchen is the one who takes it apart instead, so it's on his own terms, instead of waiting for someone else to topple it. but is it really on his own terms if liu xiao was the one who suggested playing jenga in the first place?
maybe soon liu xiao will topple the jenga tower they built together. but it hasn't happened yet! when (not if) it does happen, well, li tianchen has gotten good at playing games now. so liu xiao will keep playing with him, right? liu xiao likes games, and li tianchen is a good player. and good players aren't afraid of game overs anymore. it's all part of the game.

How to manage ADHD executive function deficits:
Implement strategies that rely on executive functions :D
Suck at breaking tasks down into smaller steps because it takes too much mental energy? Have you tried breaking down tasks into smaller steps?
Poor time management? Try managing your time better!
Have trouble keeping track of important appointments etc? Use a calendar and a planner (don’t forget to check your planner regularly!)
Tired of forgetting things all the time? Just remember set to multiple reminders, add important dates and appointments to your calendar, don’t forget to also add them to your planner that you need to remember to check regularly oh and don’t forget to write down to do lists!
If my executive functions were efficient these strategies might be more doable, or maybe Im just not trying hard enough? -.-

"Psychologists define values as the purpose or attitude we take regarding our chosen actions. A value is not a goal or destination but rather a compass that guides our journey toward a more meaningful, purpose-driven life. Values reflect the ways we most want to show up in the world. In comparison to emotions, which come and go and sometimes mistakenly lead us into thinking there is danger, values provide a steady hand that reminds us about the kind of person we want to be. In comparison to logic, values do not require us to solve anything. They require only that we choose, with clear-eyed intention, how we take our life’s journey.
We can always choose to put our values in the driver’s seat, even when we find ourselves on a path we didn’t choose, don’t much like, or that is truly unjust. We can put our values in the driver’s seat even while experiencing the searing pain of guilt, shame, sadness, or anger."
- Yael Schonbrun, from "How to Make a Decision When There Are No Good Choices." Tricycle, 6 March 2023.

i don’t hate the crossroads flashbacks we got (they’re woefully underbaked but they gave me felassan cameos. i can forgive a lot for a felassan cameo) i really just wish there had been more.
i understand not everyone is here for the arlathan lore but given that the major antagonists for 4/5 of the game are elgar’nan and ghilan’nain?? they absolutely should’ve made the rebellion against the evanuris a bigger part of the game!
there’s so much to play with there to actually pull off the rook-solas parallels that they wanted to achieve if you set up the crossroads flashbacks in a way that echoes the missions rook & their team are facing in the present. infiltrating one of the evanuris’ ceremonies (arlathan forest) for example, or defending an outpost that has been discovered by the evanuris (weisshaupt).
it would’ve given them a chance to flesh out elgar’nan & ghilan’nain’s characters as well as introduce us to more of the rebellion. it would also have given the new cast an actual basis to form opinions on solas, prior to the “castling” moment.
