This might get me cancelled, but idc, so...

Fanfiction is supposed to be transgressive. It is supposed to be about looking at something and saying "I could go somewhere interesting with that", "That was stupid, I could fix that", "I can make that better", "I can make that happen", "I can make them fall in love", "I can make them happy".

It's why one of my fandoms had about 30% more works shipping the main character with her (male) best friend as opposed to the guy she marries in the show. People looked at it and said "That isn't right. This is better". So they made it themselves.

But guess what? Shipping her or just liking her more with her love interest was still more popular amongst more casual audiences. And the fanon shippers were surprised by this!

It's why I am baffled by the things I see stated online.

People thinking that there being more fanfiction about a particular ship means more people ship it, as if one fan writes a fic each and then leaves and as if there are no people who ship it and just don't write fic? Because they are not writers?

People being surprised that main characters are shipped with other main characters more as opposed to a character that appears in one episode.

People being surprised that people can believe a character is straight in canon and still enjoy fanon slash ships where he's shipped with other men.

Of course there will always be more M/M works than M/F works. We have enough heterosexuality in media already and as for F/F, while queer women do write F/F fanfic, there aren't that many queer women in the world statistically as opposed to straight women and even if fandom has a larger number of queer women than average, queer women write M/M works too.

You can believe this is Problematic, but guess what, back then, we were all freaks and weirdos. People would share links on obscure websites because they were scared of being sued. Professional writers would purge all their fanfiction and pray to god no one ever finds out. And if you wrote gay fanfiction? Good luck being taken seriously anywhere.

We went from "ship and let ship" and "don't like don't read" to "supporting this platonic surrogate father-son bond makes you a bigot because the father figure once made an ignorant comment" and "it's problematic to ship the hero with the villain because the hero is scared of him".

Fandom stopped being about Liking and Enjoying things and started being about Fighting People and Proving You're Right and Your Ship is Better. Because if you don't become canon, if you don't Win, what is even the point?

Of course it will be like that, when you tell people shipping something is Activism and not shipping something makes them a Bad Person and shipping something you morally disagree with makes them a Bad Person and more importantly makes you a Good Person for fighting the important battle of stopping people from imagining two imaginary people kissing in their heads.

Shipping is a feeling. Sometimes it's "I ship this, hehehe." Sometimes its "Oh no, I ship this and I wish I didn't." Sometimes it's "I wish I shipped this but I can't." It's supposed to be fun and not a form of mental torture.

It's not a choice. It's not writing fanfiction or making fanart, that comes later, but it's not even a requirement. You can write fanfiction for something you don't even ship! You can write fanfiction for shows you didn't even watch!

And shipping something doesn't make you Better or Worse.

Ship shaming doesn't stop people from shipping something, it only has the potential to make them feel worse for something they, for the most part, can't control. And when the person in question is a literal teenager who also self-harms, it certainly has no potential to do anyone any good.

And it's why when the proshippers see a person like that, a person like them, they welcome them in. "You're with us now. It's your ship. Own it. Come join us." Because they have experienced the same thing and they know they would want someone to stand up for them, too. They won't let you feel as if you're alone. Because you're not and you never will be. You have a community, you just need to look for it and find it.

It's what made me realize that the antis were the bullies. Also, the antis were a bunch of teenagers too, who thought they were doing important activism by yelling at people in caps lock.

So get off your high horse. It's not that serious. Stop talking about it like it's life or death and maybe you will feel better.

hi! what do you make of ai art? im conflicted cause i see how its great for disabled people in many ways, but then i look back at the work people put into becoming artists and mastering the craft and feel many things lol i wish i could look at it similarly like i look at producers for example, where you have a vision and tools and you know how to use it well so you dont need the musical training background to be creative, but i cant help but feel like its more complicated with visual art? that theres a whole other side besides having a vision and good understanding of a shortcut tool. im very very torn and also sorry for all that on your succession blog but knowing youre a fantastic artist whos recently been dealing with this sort of impossibility to make art i wonder if you have some insight in this area.

i appreciate u wanting to know my opinion on a Hot Topic such as this! i dunno man i have an aversion to any definition of art of any kind that requires effort or skill as essential features that make the art “real”. i think a lot of what is happening with AI discourse is that people are appropriately appalled by the way capitalism mangles creative output and even what kind of relationships artists can have with their work and with the rest of the world. i do not have a problem with a machine that digests and reconfigures information — a machine is just a machine. if one copied the way i make texture with colored pencil and produced an approximation of a new original work by me, i would be fascinated by what reactions i might have to it. would i feel threatened by it? would i be flattered? what might it open up for me, to see my work broken into a particular machine’s data? this is just a dream, though. i see many artists understandably frightened by what the exploiter class may choose to do with their new toys (and what they are already doing to us with them). it just sucks to see that very plain class antagonism passed over with arguments about the “purity” of human-made art, how it is somehow apparent to any observer when a work is truly endowed with a “soul” (if these arguments sound eerily like fascist aesthetic principles, it’s because they are fascistic).

and then to see people cheering for their own doom with this thing of mr. game of thrones & co suing chatGPT, complete with condescending explanations of how it’s not going to hurt fanfic writers because the problem these multimillionaires have is actually with people monetizing their work, and the true humble Fan would ne’er ask a but penny. do people really not see how this is making the divide between the “artist” and the “common person” greater? it is so goddamn expensive to survive right now, and the wealthy are using fear of technology as a tool to prevent you from making money, and yes, making art at all. only those with enough capital to protect their intellectual property with the force of the law are allowed to express themselves through art. yes, i think it should be well within your rights to bind and sell (for money, yes, money) your game of thrones fanfiction. so many of us are living in poverty right now, bombarded by entertainment but prevented from ever chewing it up or spitting it out. ed roth’s rat fink character had it right. fuck mickey mouse. like, we’re actually back to saying “fuck mickey mouse” being really cool. put him in a blender full of data, have it put him into a beach scene with BBW anime versions of lara croft and princess peach. intellectual property is a historically recent phenomenon. it is a tool to make the rich richer and get you well and squarely fucked. theoretically, yeah, it sounds good to have your work and livelihood honored and protected, but just like they’re trying to replace artists and actors and writers with AI, every single tool becomes a weapon in the hands of the rich. the hell people are worried they need more punishing copyright law to fix is already here. the woman who designed care bears & strawberry shortcake never saw a penny from it. AI art is only a threat in the hands of the corporations that happily do these things in the first place.

anyways. lol. i’m not very technologically minded in my own art practice — i’m not naturally drawn to new technology as a part of my work, and find many of the results i’ve seen from current AI art tech to be kind of aesthetically unpleasant. artwork contains unpleasantness, though. i’m not really interested in arguments over what artwork “should” contain, only what it does. i think the best AI art i’ve seen (ie: the stuff i’ve enjoyed the most) has been from alan resnick:

it is so terrifically disquieting. it leans into what makes AI-generated BBW lara croft kind of difficult to actually jack off to. the overlapping lines of bodies, the nonsense text. but then, if this work has merit, is that because alan resnick is uniquely special, thus proving the point that the technology is only valid in the hands of a “real artist”? can mr. resnick be said to be the “artist” of these images at all, because he trained a program to his own style and input interesting ides? does he deserve lots of money for his work creating iconic adult swim shorts like this house has people in it? well sure

or would this art only have value if somebody put a tremendous amount of labor into it? you know. my mother used to tell me, “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work”. she said she should nail the phrase to my forehead, like martin luther at the church doors. having very recently become disabled & chronically ill, i don’t believe it anymore. i believe we should be able to use technology to make ourselves more free. we should not be so financially insecure that we are threatened by anyone expressing themselves with something we made. the ultra-wealthy are threatened by infringement because they need everybody else to stay poor, and the poor are threatened because they do not want to be poor any longer. it’s got nothing to do with strange scrambled pictures. if i could take pictures of every work of art i’ve ever loved and put it into a machine that mixes it up and turns it into a monster, i would do it just for a bittersweet laugh at it.

idk if u know the answer to this but i feel like u would. i was wondering if the bbc merlin creators have grounds to sue fic writers since their show is based off preexisting media? asking bc of the news of fic writers taking down their fics bc fanbinders were selling them and the writers are getting sued. and dont worry im not thinking of selling my tbom bind, this is out of pure curiosity 😅

So, a big caveat here that I'm not a lawyer and don't know much about copyright law.

Fanfiction has always kind of existed in a legal grey area. As transformative works, they fall under fair use so long as the creator is not profiting from their stories. In this case, I would think if a copyright holder were to pursue legal action, they would take it against the fanbinders actually profiting from the fics if the author is truly not involved in the sales and has received no monetary compensation. A writer could pull their stories and that's not going to stop a fanbinder who has already got a pdf or html copy of the fic that they're using to print physical copies.

Regardless of legality, it's a pretty asshole move to profit from someone else's writing like that, especially if it's scaring fic authors into deleting their fics out of concern that they might be sued. The bottom line is that NO ONE should be profiting from fanfic. We get to exist as a community and be (mostly) tolerated by copyright holders because we're not making money from their creations.

I was thinking more about my BATB au, so I just couldn't rest my artist hands when making up this comic. For those unfamiliar with the context for this, this is an SU AU where instead of getting his powers back, Steven gives up the fight and resolves himself to giving up his freedom to Spinel to save his family and the planet. In short, this is exactly as the name implies: a slow burn Beauty and the Beast themed Stevinel AU. Here's how the story starts out.

In the comic above, this is a tiny spoiler for the plot, but I am way too proud of it and this scene not to share. In it, Steven snaps at Spinel. After being taunted, belittled, and held prisoner with no chance or hope of escape, Steven can't hold his distress back anymore and unloads years worth of struggles onto the gem. As you can guess, i wanted to break some hearts. And this isn't even the full scene. Hehehehe

yeah there's a lot of tension going on at first in this story

Wild shit, right? Very good memory on your part! Yeah, when I originally made this tumblr I had been a medical student (and very not clever with usernames). Now, I've since graduated so I initially tried a username that was like 'medgraduate' or something like that and i hated it. Thus, the idiot was born.

Writing is sort of my secret identity at the moment. Nobody knows this is my hobby of choice. I think it's b/c I grew up in the era where it was taboo to publicly announce that you read/wrote fanfiction. I read the worst fanfic.... And survived?? :0

I would like to start this off with, I mean no harm with this post. And no disrespect meant to the original author. The thing was just bad. But please don't go send the author hate. Im just talking about what I saw wrong here.

I think we are all acquainted with the fanfiction called my immortal. If you don't know of this... masterpiece(?) I envy you, and you should skip this. There is time for you to save yourself.

I somehow managed to read this in school, on the school computer. And I was mostly doing it as a joke, reading the first chapter out loud to my friend. When I reached the second chapter is where it got really wired, like the absolute mischaracterization is god awful. Dumbledor yelling at Ebony and Draco for you-know-whating, let alone calling, them 'motherfuckers'. Its just wild. I was crying from laughing, and my friend had to genuinely ask if I was ok. I was not.

I made the mistake of reading at home, the whole thing. In almost one setting. Just for reference if you ignored my warning, the chapters where about as long as what you have read so far. So they did not take me long to read at all. Then again there was 44.

As bad as this was, I will say it was fucking funny. All the character's are cannon harry potter character's, but made 'goth'. I.e. The author made the all edgy vampires with ass names, and black hair. For example, Harry was Vampire, Ron was Darkness, Past Voldemort called himself Satan, as that was his middle name. Even though he had a cannon one.

Some of them are just blatant miss-spellings. Snape was Snoop, or Snake a lot, and my favorite one, Nevil was Navel. I just found that one really funny. There was a lot of words spelled wrong, sometimes to the point of it being unreadable.

I would consider myself to be a more alterative style, I like punk, grunge, emo and other things of that sort. I am however aware of goth culture and bands. So the fact that they were almost all goths, spelled goffic/goffik. And they just had to be all vampire satanists, and only where black, was just horrible.

The worst part for me was when anytime music was brought up it was my chemical romance (emo), Lincoln Park (alt), green day (punk) and slipknot (nu metal) I was pretty annoyed. As none of those are gothic bands. The only one im not sure on is Good Charlotte, I have not heard of that one so I dont know what to say it is. I have a good guess its not goth. Please let me know if im wrong on this. But the other ones are bands I listen to and really like.

Also all the mentions of serious topics in this very unserious, troll fic, just made me feel wired? They felt unneeded and just there to be there. They where not mentioned in a respectful way at all. In one of these topics, there was an authors note about how that it was a serious topic. And it was just vagally mentioned. There was so much brushing over of things that irl would not be brushed over. Like sa, sh, and attempted, are just mentioned and then the characters just go on.

I know it's meant to be like this, and I knew about it being called the worst fanfic before going in. But my god, it was horrible.

If you had any criticism you where 'preppy' so 'skrew urself, u suk!111' Im being fully honest the authors note's where more entreating the the 'plot' if you can call it that. The mc named Ebony Darkness dementia way. Smth like that. Has to go back in time to seduce Voldemort so that he wont make her kill Vampire, as she dose not want to kill him because she loves him. If she dose not kill him he will kill Draco, and she loves Draco.

The author keeps saying that Ms. Ebony is not a marry su. When she very much is, she makes her argument that Ebony is not perfect, because she has depression. Yet latter on in the story Ebony is complaining about how all guys fall in love with her, and that she wishes she where ugly. Like- ermmm... If you are asking to be 'ugly' you are most likely a Marry Su.

I feel like I could make this so much longer, but its already nearly an essay. (tbh might write one for fun lol). And it's only my first post on this blog, Im going to end it here. I could go on, as I have yet to mention all the hints at gay and bi fetish, or how some of the adult characters where made pedos.

HOLY FUCK HOLY SHITTING FUCK SOMEONE FINALLY NOTICED I'M SO HAPPY LMAO

i have so much to say about this oh my fucking god-

first things first, with the el noli fandom being very small, and the novels' author being very dead, i feel obliged to say that i have been desperately craving for content for the past how many years. much of this is due to the fact that the story itself is unfinished (don't even get me started on Makamisa)—but what really takes the cake is that i, along with my friends, have some thoughts on the two main novels.

[immediate apologies for this rant,, i tried to keep this short as i didn't want to get too into the topic lmao]

[TW: major spoilers for Noli Me Tángere and El Filibusterismo by José Rizal]

(1) character disappearances

basilio was a major character in el filibusterismo not only because of his involvement in the story, but because of his past. he knew simoun's true identity, and likely had an idea what happened with elias (there's no way he wouldn't know this—especially when the scandal with crisostomo was such a big thing with the nobility, not to mention basilio being taken under captain tiago's wing after). while i wouldn't yet call him an accomplice to simoun's formation or development as a character at this point in time, when he buries his mother and elias with crisostomo, it's one of the points of interest in his story because it's how he gets involved with one of the main characters in the first place.

moving on to the sequel; he becomes a main character himself. for his story, he could've used his position as a lauded student of medicine to his advantage, especially after julí's death. I'm of the opinion that even if his reputation was ruined due to the arrests, there's no way he couldn't have pulled a favour or two. basilio was angry enough to agree to simoun's offer of revolution, and we don't see much else in the last few chapters save for him trying to stop isagani from going to the party. we don't see him at all after that.

and placido ))):< mans had a whole chapter to himself and we barely ever see him again. the one time we do later in the novel, it's a mere footnote. we don't know the specifics of what he did under simoun's command, we don't even get to witness him in action. what happened in the time between his meeting with simoun and the botched explosion? what happens with his mother after the debacle? what did padre millon do after his outburst? i have so many more questions crammed in one of my oldest google docs lmfao. overall, i really like placido's character too. i felt a kinship with him when i read his chapter—so that factored into my interest in his character.

(2) unfinished story + literature

i understand that the author died before the last novel was finished, but after getting so invested in the series, it left me wanting as a reader. don't get me wrong—i love reading about the theories being made on both official research and on fanfictions when it comes to the stories. but with the fanbase being so small, and some documents unavailable for perusal (at least for me), it's hard to cope with the knowledge that we won't get much else.

additionally, from what I've heard, the novels are being treated as homework, and just that. just research for a subject. perhaps it's my obsession with the stories peaking through, but i stand by that. as a fan of classic literature, especially of works that aren't as globally recognised, it kinda hurts my soul lmao.

alright, listen; material like Les Misérables, Crime and Punishment, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Pride and Prejudice, and et cetera—they deserve their acclaim. I'm not downplaying any of the author's successes nor the legacies that those kinds of works have earned. but stories such as Noli Me Tángere, El Filibusterismo, Wives and Daughters, The Setting Sun, Doña Barbara, and more—i enjoy reading lesser known literature. they have fewer analyses, lower recognition, and are generally more obscure. shifting for these classics is the true immersion, the true experience, in my opinion. it's a chance at finally getting the worlds I've only imagined fully come into life.

(3) personal reasons

a few days ago, a friend of mine remarked that we (the three of us who's in the group) might have had a chance at being called attractive had we lived during the time period the novels were written. this isn't to degrade my friends or myself in any way—just simply stating that there are always better people when it comes to things like beauty. i agreed with her. growing up, i never really fit into that category of conventional attractiveness; and while I've often been told otherwise, i know i still had to grow into my looks, and earn my place into the middle hierarchy with peers, not like the people who've had the privilege of money and breeding to comfort themselves with to actually pay to be attractive.

I'm not saying that to sound misogynistic—i genuinely don't give a shit about the peers who gave me trouble in the past—but i do want to experience that too, you know? everyone's always dreamed of a better life, and what finer way than shifting to experience that?

avery probably could afford a nicer apartment (her apartment isnt that bad structurally, its just undecorated and ugly because she has no idea what she's doing and doesnt have a life outside of her job. like at all. whatsoever. & yeah averys a sopping wet creature she absolutely hates herself) but she doesn't see the point. she saves a lot, & when she buys stuff she buys stuff that'll last a long time so usually a little more expensive. she doesnt want to buy a house bc she doesnt want to deal with selling a house. imagine being able to afford a house. vampire hunters usually get paid rly well- they get paid per pair of fangs they turn in (vampires leave them behind when they die lol i forgot to mention that) so avery being pretty skilled gets paid pretty well- kelly being pretty shit doesnt get paid much (avery gives him some of the fangs she gets) scarlet used to be decent so she also got paid well but now she just. turns her own fangs in all the time and that's gathering a lot of money. for her projects. and she bought a funny little house with no upstairs but a downstairs that looks like an upstairs. so. ig scarlets the richest of the three rn bc of her little infinite money hack- avery could do it too but she doesnt rly wanna rip her teeth out all the time, and she hasnt quit killing vampires so whats the point.

Cuando se diseñó la armadura de Sagitario, Kurumada (el creador) no tenía la más mínima idea de que al final vendrían más caballeros de oro, por lo que hizo un diseño que pueda separarse en piezas grandes para buscarlas.

Al ver el éxito de esa armadura, Kurumada decidió crear las 11 que faltaban. Claro que el resto de las armaduras tuvo un diseño estilizado y elegante (la armadura de Leo sí la tenía pensada ya que incluso casi lo pone como protagonista).

Me tomé como headcanon lo que vi sobre que las alas de la armadura de sagitario la colocan como la más poderosa al tener tanta similitud con las divinas que tienen alas. Siendo estas las formas finales de las cloths en la saga de Hades.

En Saint Seiya, tanto el clásico, como next dimensions y the lost canvas muestran que las almas que llegan al inframundo pierden todos sus sentidos. Sin embargo, en The lost canvas the gaiden, se menciona que luego de haber llegado al inframundo algunas almas conservan su consciencia por un breve periodo de tiempo. Se muestra que las almas que llegan al inframundo pierden todos los sentidos y vagan por allí sin consciencia alguna, pero es posible despertar el octavo sentido.

El Arayashiki u Octavo sentido, es un sentido poseído por muy pocos personajes en la serie. Además de los Dioses, muy pocos Mortales han despertado el Octavo Sentido de manera voluntaria. Vijnana quiere decir “conciencia” y Alaya quiere decir “Morada” Es un término especializado del Budismo Mahayana. en la cual La palabra "raya" de Arayashiki significa almacén o deposito. El prefijo "A" cambia el significado a "mantener guardado". En otras palabras, la mente esta donde la información se guarda o almacena. Significa “La Morada de la Conciencia/Sentido” Es la base de la existencia de cada ser humano.

Alaya es la conciencia universal que toma y conserva la experiencia individual y colectiva. Es decir, el alma colectiva. Algunos la llaman la octava conciencia. Según esta forma de vida, el Vijnana sólo sera alcanzado cuando, por medio de la meditación, el devoto puede volver al estado de conciencia pura como lo hizo el Buda.

Se dice que para lograrlo se debe pasar ocho etapas “Camino de las Ocho Etapas” (en sánscrito, Astingika-Marga). Tras lograrlo serás desprendido del ciclo de la reencarnación y alcanzarás el nirvana.

En Saint Seiya, Kurumada asoció este estado (la "octava conciencia") a la superación de las reglas del Inframundo y el libre movimiento en el sin estar sometido. A esto llamó "Octavo Sentido”. Otra licencia creativa de mi parte. La explicación de Dohko en el cap 98 del manga sobre que las armaduras doradas tenían el poder del sol en su interior porque daban una vuelta en elipsis alrededor del sol no me gustó. Son las constelaciones las que rotan alrededor del sol, así que eso de las armaduras rotando elegí cambiarlo por un headcanon de que Apolo bañó las armaduras con la luz del Sol.

Los ángeles de Atena es como se refirieron a los santos de sagitario y Pegaso por ser los más fieles caballeros de la diosa. Teniendo en cuenta esto puse que el apodo del santo de sagitario de la era mitológica era precisamente “el ángel de Atena”. Además, según next dimensions, el santo de la era del mito recibió la “flecha de la diosa” la cual sólo podía ser detenida por la diosa Atena.

Tengo pensado hacer que esta historia llegue a relatar el conflicto mencionado por Hades en su Saga, ya que quedó sólo como un comentario que el caballero de pegaso era el “asesino de dioses” el único capaz de dañar a los dioses y quien siempre se enfrentaba al dios del inframundo en cada guerra santa.

Kurumada hace muchas menciones de cosas que sucedieron en la era del mito, pero nunca profundiza en ellas, por lo mismo esos espacios en blanco son los que yo uso para mi historia.
