Practical Tips to Create and Configure a Patreon Account and Start Creating
You can do this in less than an hour with my practical tips. Bonus: importance of building a community on Patreon. When I published my Substack Mastery book, I got in touch with some readers to obtain feedback on their first impressions.. One of the questions was which chapter was the most useful for them. It varied among readers, but one pattern emerged when I analyzed the data.  Readers from…

Doctor Beth's Patient Log --- A new newsletter!
This one isn’t a story…
This post isn’t about a teddy bear or a lamb, or a cloth doll.
I wanted to let you all know that I have started a Substack, Doctor Beth’s Patient Log.  It will be just like the stories here, but if you subscribe (which is free) you can get the stories straight to your email.
I’m still going to tell the stories here…. You all are my original audience and I wouldn’t dream of stopping.  But a bunch of you have had trouble with recent posts being inaccurately labelled mature (why is Felicia the frog or a Berenstain Bear mature?), and this way, if you want, you shouldn’t have to worry about that again.  I have contacted Tumblr (three times!) about the mislabelling and have not heard back.  And when I or my family have looked at the posts, they don’t have that label, so I’m assuming it’s corrected quickly, but I know it can still be aggravating.
Which is why I went and did some research on Substack (where I subscribe to a bunch of newsletters) and figured out how to duplicate my posts there for those who want (or if you have friends who aren’t on Tumblr but might be interested, they can always try the Substack).
The first newsletter comes out later this week.  It’s a retro story, Baby Bunny’s tale.  If you remember the Bunny with the samurai costume, it’s their story.  Then, starting with my Memorial Day post here, the same story will come out on the Substack newsletter too. If you’d like to subscribe, you can click here.
So, I hope you keep an eye out for that Memorial Day tale, about Navy Goat.  I’ve been saving his story for the holiday.  And if you’d like, or if you have friends who might be interested, you’ll also be able to see him on my new Doctor Beth’s Patient Log Newsletter.
More stories soon!

Kat’s Canvas is a newsletter/blog I’ve created to document my work and career! I’m currently in the process of adding entries on everything I’ve done since 2017, as an archive of information for other artists and fans of animation.
It contains retrospective journal entries about my animation industry work and life as an independent creative, as well as convention & gallery show recaps. As I work on writing more posts, I hope to add end-of-year reviews, film/graphic novel/game recommendations and more!
With the way social media platforms have also been openly embracing harmful policies and rhetoric, I’m also hoping for this to be an alternative space for people to keep up with me and get updates on what I’ve been doing.
It’s available to read and subscribe now - here's the link!

I'd seen a comment that the finalized design for Venom seems to have an unbuttoned shirt when compared to the buttoned vest of the concept art from the S4 trailer (which had leaked unfortunately), so maybe that's where the confusion might be coming from. Does make me curious how often they change a detail like that so close to model work being done, given so much of Strive's concept art (at least the ones I've seen) does tend to match what we get in the final game.
I must've blocked the correct amount of people because the last character leak I knew about was the Slayer one that was like a whopping 12 hours or something before the actual reveal anyway lol
We were actually talking about concept art through alpha then beta designs in the wiki server yesterday!! It's really interesting how far some concepts made it in the timeline before getting changed. @shmuelbrain dug these up.
Elphelt from the 3rd location test for Xrd Sign (late 2013?) still had a pink clover on her ear that she's got in her concept art (it got changed to green in the final release):

Sol's outfit changed pretty late in Sign's development too. The story preview they showed there had an interesting saturated color filter. I like it, but the more natural colors in the final version definitely look/read better. From the 3rd loc test.

We were musing over what could have made them change their minds about Sol's outfit for the story that late into development and decided that it was possible his arm anatomy kept bugging during animation so they gave him sleeves to hide it lol
Sol's story mode outfit (with the longsleeve jacket) seems to be a light reworking of the outfit he had in the Xrd prototype from 2011 (!!). He's on the right in this screenshot, but the imposter on the left's outfit is really similar too

Throwback to the fingernail gloves from his Holy Order uniform...
The Xrd prototype design fascinates me because it's essentially a 3D version of Sol's Vastedge XT design. He's even got the Junkyard Dog Mk.II in the prototype build. The design there is 1:1 to its design in VXT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note: The neon colors here are placeholders, it doesn't actually have that bright cyan in Vastedge.
The Xrd prototype/Vastedge design is cool because you can still see elements of it in Sol's Strive outfit. They tightened up his silhouette and made things like the gloves/hands read easier, but it's almost possible to argue that this is likely the same jacket. They've been tweaking this for at least 14 years!!
Tumblr media
It's tricky to figure out this stuff for most of the cast, but Sol's design changes are really well documented. I think he's usually the first character they make for games, so he's usually their graphics and gameplay test dummy

For this week’s newsletter, I wrote about 9-1-1’s decision to kill off the 118’s fearless leader and where I think the show may go without Bobby Nash.

Why We're on Substack After All
Having recently spoken out strongly against a presence on Substack, we have now changed our minds. We still prefer our own newsletter service, of course, but this platform is extremely well done.
And let's be honest: social media is finished. It doesn't allow us to reach our followers or see the posts of the accounts we actually follow. It's no good as a connector and has no real engagement. Yet that's exactly what we need in this world.
Anyway, here's Wonderwall:

gay matt damon article got picked up by the substack algorithm somehow so im peeking in on how regular substack people live thru my notifs and it’s really funny. every newsletter is called like “the petulant dispatch” or “monoculture girlfriend” and every post is like “i woke up at noon in my new york apartment after a late night of lexapro sweats and moongazing. it was snowing. i looked out the window and wondered about the last tenets of my girlhood. where did it go? when did it leave me?”

i'm not a substacker myself, but from the handful of peeks i've randomly gotten behind the curtain, substack's got its own admin issues related to content moderation of nazi fucks. and also there apparently started being some kinda social media aspect at some point too, that took over how people promote their newsletters? again, never had an actual substack account myself, i'm only subbed to RSS feeds of a small handful, but i thought i'd give you a heads-up in case it's also morphed into a similar toxic pit to what you're tryna escape (would love a newsletter either way)
oh hmm, i hadn't heard of that before--or maybe i had and forgot about this situation--but i appreciate you letting me know! i know some other artist friends who use it (NOT because of that situation, rather despite it i think) so that's why i had mentioned it--im def gonna look into other options as well...appreciate the heads up

to celebrate the 56th anniversary of the birds, the bees & the monkees, i decided to release my 4th newsletter on this special day.
she's been a long time coming… i've started writing and collecting my research all the way back in january and i couldn't have done it with the wonderful community of monkees-fans i've met along the way. i want to give a special shoutout to my friend @wutheringdyke, who's been there since day one.
sending lots of love to the people mentioned, my readers and of course: davy, peter, mike and micky. 🌻💛
