Ah fuck it. We all know of the theory that Gortash looks and behaves the way he does cuz of grief. But, what if it's not grief? What if it's duty? What if it's guilt but also, dare I say it, affection?

What if the reason he couldn't care less about that grand plan and those horrible ambitions and himself is cuz he's the survivor. Cuz he now has the duty to actually live and not function in his partner's stead?

What if he's trying to rush and put everything to an end simply because his priorities shifted from being a nice little cog in someone else's machine to actually, truly living for the first time because he's still capable of it when others aren't anymore? Others that allowed him to be in that position in the first place? What if it's to honour them, because that was their last wish? What if it's a last desperate act of affection for the person he tried to convince isn't a monster?

They wanted for Gortash to live. At the very least, they wanted for him to live longer than most. So what if he's trying that now that they're gone, and he's cursed with the privilege of being alive? Durges prayer told him to live, so what if he's struggling to do exactly that now? To honour and love whom he's lost, who mattered to him?

The thing about your best friend dying young, is that part of you will always be the age you were when you lost her.

A part of you, the part of you that knew her, that lived in the same space as her and breathed the same air through laughter and glee and childlike goofiness, gets stuck there.

It gets stuck, stagnant, unmoving and frozen and painfully so. There's no adjusting the size of it to make room as you grow, as you gain life experiences she will never have, as you become an individual alone when you were supposed to become the two of you together.

The thing about Barb Holland dying when she's a sophomore in high school is that a part of Nancy Wheeler will always be standing at her locker blushing about a boy.

A part of her will always be squealing as she flies into a brightly lit pool, will always be walking up the steps away from the girl waiting for her down below.

This part of her will never die, because if it does then the part of Barb who existed in those moments is lost forever.

Nancy and Barb were a unit, a single life in the little world of Hawkins, Indiana, and so part of Nancy has to remain sixteen years old forever, for as long as forever can last because.

Because she is in charge of carrying so much of Barb's story.

She knows things, was present for little moments of laughter or teasing or sorrow or hope that no one else got to saw. Not even Barb's parents will ever know the extent of who their daughter was in the same way Nancy Wheeler does, and it's not a responsibility she signed up for when she sat down in that ballet studio next to the girl with the red hair when she was only six years old, but it's a responsibility she's aware of now.

Sixteen and killing the thing which took away her best friend.

Sixteen and driving to Illinois to seek out some sort of justice.

Sixteen and still, still, still fighting to be heard when she knows something is wrong, when she knows something is off the same way it was when her best friend's car stayed parked on the road all night.

Sixteen years old and another innocent girl is dead, another one another one always a goddamn other one--

Sixteen.

The thing about your best friend dying young is that you become the protector of their story.

Even when it's your fault she's not here to do it herself.

One scene to break us all

I grew up on Star Wars. I'm more of a new era fan, with prequels being always a part of it. Also, as a kid I was watching Clone Wars series on television. It definitelly made both my idea of the world and humor more dark than psychologist would consider healthy, although I have my own opinion on refusal to expose children to tough themes in media, but thats not what I want to write about. I want to write about a scene that I can't really recall having much interested in when I watched it as a kid yet now, I can watch it over and over with tears crumbling every time I see it.

Why didn't it affect me? Affect us? Why was it that in the past it felt like an exposition? We can account it to my small brain not really comprehending what's going on, waiting for a cool duel between Anaking and Obi-Wan among the fires of hellish landscapes. But I think there can be a deeper cause. One that was explained in quote accounted to Joseph Stalin. "One death is tragedy, thousand is a statistic"

Execution of Order 66, without any Star Wars uniwerse background, is about the scale of events that happens in the movie. I heard that scenes used in that sequence were primarly planned to be at the begining of the movie to showcase scale of Clone Wars, notify a viewer about how all of galaxy is raging in fights between clones and droids. They scrapped that idea and used it to showcase the scale of Palpatine's victory over Jedi: all around the galaxy, with one sentence, Sith Lord wiped out hole Jedi Order we came to know thruout the prequel trilogy. That's what I mean by exposition. It's shocking and terrifing on it's own, but ultimatly, those were just the events. Emotional weight was put in the Jedi temple.

So what changed? Why is it now that I watch order 66 I can't help but shed at least one tear?

As I said, I was watching Clone Wars on television. But it was occasional, when I have the time and hit the right channel at the right time type of watching back then. Then I watched it preety much from beggining to an end when I was a bit older, but it still didn't feel that close to home, as it was way back when it was still ending on Yoda and his little journey. Even then tho it already altered my perception of the movies.

Then came the time, the year 2020, everyone will remember as the year pandemic hit. But fans will know it was also a year of the finale release, Clone Wars season 7, featuring phew side plot-lines, Echo, Bad Batch, martez sisters and Darth Maul. But most importantly, it finally got to that point. It finally allowed us to hear "Execute order 66" in the show. And as it did, it did justice to what Order 66 represents. The end of an Era.

By connecting the Clone Wars show, by putting it right into the events of ROTS, it symbolically made all of that happen thru out the show part of the Prequel Trilogy for good.

Now we don't see sexy, blue alien chick getting blasted in the back. We see Ayla Secura, kind yet tough master that helped carrying Anakin after he took explosion onto his chest, getting shot multiple times by Commander Bly.

We don't see weird looking brown Jedi getting shot down by clone pilots on some airy planet, we see Master Plo Koon, the one that brought Ahsoka to Jedi Temple, dying before he could blink.

We don't see a long headed man, concerned about wookies in previous scene, confused at clones. We see Ki Adi Mundi, man that almost died in the second invasion on Geonosis and bickered around with Anakin and Ahsoka, terrified of the sight and feeling that his clones are out here to kill him.

Thousand deaths is a statistic. It's the exposition of scale. It's how the history is written in the book. The war took thousand of innocent lives. That is important on it's own. But you won't cry over it. You will cry over a death of the ones you cared about. Over the ones you got to know.

At the beggining, when I said about watching Order 66 scene, I lied a bit. I ment watching the extended edit, fan made, connecting all the scenes happening in the universe that were ever made for screen. I'm still waiting for any cinema to release the Revenge of the Sith movie that starts from that episode in season 7 Clone Wars, then follows both story lines of Anakin and Ahsoka together and when it gets to Order 66, it puts all the scenes possible, even cut scenes from Jedi Fallen Order, as it too crushed my heart, when I realised what's going on when Kal high fived a clone on his way.

Order 66 started as a statistic about thousand deaths. Years have passed however, allowing us to witness characters truly involved in it to the point where the scene, being not far from two decades old now, is more heartbreaking than ever before.

Oh no

A resistant Durge who denounces Bhaal is killed by Bhaal and subsequently resurrected without the Urge per canon. But upon resurrection realizes that the odd echo of feelings for the (now deceased) Gortash are STILL their and somehow even stronger than before.

Resistant Durge thinking that the old them, pre-brain scramble, surely liked Gortash as they did as a side effect of being a fucked up evil Bhaalspawn, and that once they overcame/removed the urges, this inexplicable discomforting itch of feelings for Gortash would die with that part of themself, too. Having all these strange emotions bubbling in the back of their mind while they agree to a truce and temporary partnership to get the brain under control for the time being. Being willfully ignorant of Gortash's apparent honestly and genuine interests in Durge. Wishing to get everything over with so they can get away from the uncomfortable familiarity and comfort Gortash's voice brings. Being convinced that once they escape Bhaal, these feelings it's causing will go away with it.

Only to come to realize once being revived a new that they had liked Gortash despite the Bhaalspawn thing, and being beholden to their father actually suppressed it. Because now that their free of his influence altogether the feelings that were poking and prodding at them quietly, and guilt of watching Gortash die hit them full force. Forced to have the dread and regret and guilt of realizing too late that Gortash was the one thing from their previous life that WASN'T thrust upon them at their father's command. They had been so eager to be rid of the one person in the world who truly did care for them, mean something to them, while thinking the exact opposite.

Or something.

Most of the time some people have a fear in them that something might go terribly wrong if they start having a good time. And it's not really their fault. Most of the time, it's their past experiences which make them doubt if they're worthy of that happiness or not. Deep down they don't take life for living it, they takes as they have to survive it.

Important question, do more of the RE8 villagers survive in this version?

Yes, very much yes. I can't, at this time, guarantee any specific characters other than Elena (definitely) and Luiza (probably), and an undetermined number of unnamed villagers, but I definitely plan for some of the villagers to survive.

While the total wipe-out of the Village in RE8 is a lot more believable than other "total wipes" like Raccoon City or the Pueblo in RE4, as it seems significantly smaller than both RC or the Pueblo, and has a more intelligent breed of bioweapon under specific instruction to exterminate the Village, Resident Evil has a weird and kind of uncomfortable history with complete massacres over its long history that I'm always inclined to push against. It's lazy, uninteresting writing to me when it's a trope recycled so frequently... especially given it's very clearly mostly used to provide clean narrative "closure" between each game by eliminating any other survivors other than the main protagonists (and Wesker lol). Like... RE4, for example, functions as a contained narrative because the Pueblo dies at its end. Its function is over in the continued story of "Resident Evil"... it only matters going forth in the context of Leon, Ashley, and Ada as characters. But as a writer, I'm much more intrigued by a version of that story that involves other survivors. What would it mean to live through something like that, not as the hero outsider protagonist, but as a civilian? How do you even recover? Who would you be after?

The weight of the horror of the complete destruction of a place that's isolated to a single game becomes faded when it's the same shit in every game. I'm sick of it, and bored of it. It would hit harder if it wasn't every damn game... better to take it apart and try something new with its empty box.
