1. feed me just enough that i'll never need a cage (1917) - man oh man, my beloved Tom/Will historical horror au. I was truly on another level when I was writing for 1917, I genuinely adore every fic I wrote for this fandom but this is quite possibly my favorite fic ever (definitely top 3!).

2. Under Your Spell (Saw) - my delightfully putrid Amanda/John (OH TEE PEE!!!!) fic that I wrote for a unique sample population (myself and only myself) as a treat, and the target audience loves how monstrous, gross, and horny it is.

3. body and blood (John Wick) - oh Mr Wick/The Elder, my delicious rarepair, the second fic ever in this tag (what a distinguished honor). I had the best time writing this, I loved getting into my beloved assassin husband’s head in this slutty, angsty little vignette.

4. Very God-Like, Don't You Agree? (Venom) - whenever I ask myself how/why I managed to only write one (1) symbrock fic, I reread said fic and am reminded that I managed to fit pretty much all of my favorite parts of their dynamic into this one glorious, kinky fic. I just read this the other day in fact and was overjoyed to conclude that it still kicks ass.

5. i hide my tongue behind my teeth and buy myself a new belief (Peaky Blinders) - oh man I just adore Tommy/Alfie, so much insane chemistry, so much angst, so much absolutely buck wild loose cannon energy. I am so happy that I captured so many choice dynamics for these two in this fic, and I also love my writing style here - it’s very much in line with what I’m always aiming to accomplish in my moodier fics.

This was so much fun! And surprisingly difficult - there are several more that I could have easily included here instead. Thank you for the dearly needed bolster to my writing confidence, sweet anon!

I made a banner for @feedmecookiesnow's amazingly perfect Symbrock-meets-the-Queer-Eye-cast fic "It's Not Anxiety, It's a Parasite" and i'm just. gonna watch this lil animated alien ooze zoom across my screen forever (but really it's to avoid all the feels this fic gave me)

“It’s ridiculous. I don’t need a life makeover.”

Anne fixes him with a glare. “Eddie, you need a life makeover more than anyone I’ve ever met. You are terrible at taking care of yourself, and it’s gotten even worse since we broke up. You’re reclusive. You go out at odd hours. You dress like a moody teenager. And I’m pretty sure you haven’t slept in two days.”

Eddie starts to protest, but everything she just said is true. He is reclusive, when he’s not interviewing. He prefers to go out late at night. His wardrobe is pretty much sweatshirts and baggy pants. He did sleep recently, but it wasn’t a good sleep, and it pretty clearly shows on his face. So yeah. She’s not wrong.

Also, he has a parasite.

Winterhawk ficlet: Dungeons and Dragons + “Adopting all the strays” wc 550

“No — Don’t you do it. Don’t you fucking do it.” A vein above Bucky’s eyebrow throbs, apoplectic. 

Beside him, Tony grins, ever the shit-stirrer. He pounds on the table. “Do it, do it, do it.” 

Steve’s gaze flicks between Bucky and Clint, and Clint can see his natural inclination for keeping the peace fighting with his desire for pure fucking chaos at the expense of his best friend’s sanity. Chaos wins. “I think you gotta do it.” 

Natasha raises an eyebrow, and the tiny twitch of her lips is more than enough permission. 

Clint rolls his D20. 

Everyone’s eyes are trained on the die as it rattles down the table towards Bucky. It bounces off the edge of Steve’s dice tower, skitters back to the center of the aisle next to Tony’s bottle of Mountain Dew. It spins on an edge, tipping one way, then another. 

It falls over, a shiny silver 20 glistening for all to see. 

The table explodes. 

Clint’s on his feet before he even realizes it; Tony’s chair is tipped onto the floor with the force of his guffaws; Steve’s wheezing; Nat’s smirking — and Bucky has his face in his hands, his head shaking slowly side to side, his shoulders quaking with resigned laughter. 

“NAT TWENTY, BABY,” Clint crows. He’s somehow on top of his chair, and maybe he should be worried about it bearing his weight, but he can’t find it within himself to be. “Plus five charisma, fucker, now gimme that NPC!” 

“I hate you so much,” Bucky says through his hands. “So, so much.” 

“I can’t believe you got Hawkeye another stray,” Tony says from where he’s crying on the floor. “What is this, the fourth? I thought for sure this tree-giant would be immune.” 

“I hate this game,” Bucky groans. His forehead is on the table, his voice muffled. “I hate that this is what you decided your character’s thing was. I hate you.” 

“It’s all in the backstory,” Clint snickers, dancing on the chair. “Hawkeye can’t resist a solo traveller. He understands. He empathizes. He knows what it’s like. He wants them to feel loved.” 

“You were supposed to fight him, not adopt him into the party.” 

“Why did you choose that voice for him?” Steve coughs out after a gasp of his inhaler, still laughing. “You sound ridiculous! You’re gonna be stuck doing that for weeks. What were you thinking?” 

“I don’t fucking know. Maybe I thought that my boyfriend, just once, wouldn’t make my life more difficult. Obviously I was wrong. Clint lives to provoke me.” 

“Hell yeah I do,” Clint says. Nat rolls her eyes at the finger guns he shoots at everyone. 

Bucky slowly lifts his head, resigned, and scribbles something on his notebook. “Okay, okay. Sit the fuck up, Tony, and sit the fuck down, Clint.” 

He leans forward as they settle, and glares daggers as he begins to speak. “Alright, the tree-giant — yes, I’ll think of a name, gimme a goddamn second — walks over to Hawkeye, putting away his Thorn Whip. He falls in behind the Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and Hawkeye #2, all of whom, for some godforsaken reason, have decided to join your party…”

okay so here's the headcanon: AU Clint Barton works various part-time jobs and is content with it. Gig work is where it's at. He does a bunch of things that are all very different to keep himself engaged. He's always on the go. He interacts with all sorts of different people and environments. He can codeswitch to fit the job, and while kinda messy and rushed half the time, he's reliable and always meets people's needs. He doesn't feel like he needs anything more "stable" or "traditional" or "career". His friends are all for it because he chooses jobs that make him happy.

Because I’m obsessed, I ended up figuring a way of getting some stats of the fics I read in 2022. I made a collection and added all the Venom bookmarks I created in 2022 so I could use the filters to find the top tags

I’m not sure if my results are accurate though. I make a bookmark of every fic I read and it’s usually on the same day, sometimes the next day. But while I could add even my private bookmarks to the collection, I’m not sure if they count for the filters, or if they’re even visible in the collection. They’re few anyway

The collection has a total of 216 fics

Of these, 162 are tagged for the movie, and 100 for the comics. Of course some fics are tagged as both. There are also tags of the Spider-Man movies and general Marvel tags

Symby is tagged in 195 fics. They got 11 more fics than Eddie, who’s tagged in 184 (there’s also the Eddie Brock | Venom tag which is used 54 times, some fics use it in addition to the Eddie tag and others use only one version). The next characters are Peter (31), Flash (25 + 5 tagged as Flash Thompson | Venom), Anne (22), Dan (13), Sleeper (11) and Dylan (7)

182 fics contain symbrock (probably includes ot3 and ot4 fics). The & symbrock tag (which is sometimes used along the ship tag) has 77 fics. Then 19 are Eddie/Flash/Symby, 14 are Eddie/Peter/Symby, 13 are Eddie/Peter, 12 are Flash/Symby, 11 are Eddie/Flash, 10 are Peter/Flash, 6 are Eddie & Anne, and 6 are Dan/Anne. Eddie being in a pairing usually implies Symby being too, and the opposite is often true except for some Flash/Symby and Peter/Symby fics. As it should be

I am not surprised at these numbers except I expected to see Eddie/Dan/Symby/Anne in the top relationships but it makes sense they are outnumbered by the many variations of lockscreen (Eddie and Symby and Flash and Peter). Also Carnage and Cletus didn’t make it to the top characters even though I remember reading a bunch of LTBC fics. I also had no idea I had read more movie fics than comics fics. I’m not picky when it comes to it and I guess there are more movie fics than comics’, but I was expecting a more balanced amount. Also Peter somehow beat Flash? That’s unfair

Alright give me marvel epic that sounds pornographic

It does have the sexy times! The Marvel Epic (tentative title is This Is War) is an installment to the Secret Avengers ‘verse (TOS ‘verse) and is a fix it for the current Donny Cates Venom run and Knull arc. It’s outlined to be 80-100K words, I have six chapters finished, and it’s primarily Winterhawk and Symbrock with a bit of background Fratt with an ensemble cast (lots of Flash Thompson and Miles Morales!). Have a snip (Winterhawk just for you, CB):

The kiss is spinning wildly out of control. Clint’s vaguely aware of a light flashing on the control panel but Bucky’s too addictive, the taste of him far too intoxicating to stop. It’s been four years since they’d first gotten together and Clint’s been a willing victim to the maelstrom that’s Bucky Barnes ever since. He’ll never want to stop; will never be able to stop.

Bucky’s the one to break away, pulling back and resting his forehead against Clint’s, his eyes nearly black as his breath puffs against Clint’s cheek.

“No,” Clint whines, attempting to chase Bucky’s lips. “Stopping bad. Why’re we stopping?” He needs Bucky like he needs oxygen; the man’s Clint’s beacon of light in the rapidly darkening depths of his own mind.

“About to land,” Bucky mouths, jerking his head toward the control panel. His hand leaves Clint’s hair and trails around to cup his cheek, the smooth vibranium thumb stroking gently. “Rain check?”

Now he has twice as many problems, including a kid who won't stop treating him like the big brother she never had and a moody alien parasite.  Or: you can totally secretly pine while sharing a brain with someone else, as Venom and Eddie are both determined to prove.

2020 fic recs

thank you to all the fic writers who kept me afloat and more or less sane during this weird, fucked up year. literally don’t think i could have done it without you. to pay it forward, here are some recs. it was really difficult to pick what to put on this list, but these ones did stand out the most in the end. still, my thanks goes to literally every fic writer ever, and especially everyone whose fics i read this year, even if they aren’t on this list.

disclaimer & some notes: a lot of these are older fics, because i discovered a new fandom and returned to ones i’d been taking a break from. but all were read during 2020. (did some maths and i seem to have read approximately 2.5 million words of fanfic this year?.....). also, tried to add warnings the best i could, please heed them and check the author’s warnings as well, just in case.

Covert Coffee & Flirtation Special by @glittercake | Bucky Barnes/Sam Wilson | 5.5k | warnings: none | Comment: so much fun! i was cackling half the time and the identity porn really works.

Like Soldiers Do by @glittercake | Bucky Barnes/Sam Wilson | 8k (ongoing) | warnings: canon-typical violence | Comment: there’s a lot of jokes and fronting here, but the intimacy and passion are what makes this fic so compelling.

There Is No Shortage of Blood by @albymangroves @dsudis | Bucky Barnes/Steve Rogers | 246k | warnings: (a lot, including but not limited to) rape recovery, rape aftermath, rape fantasy, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, etc. please read author’s warnings | Comment: a harsh, desperate, gruesome path through recovery, shot through with a lot of love, care and community. there are no easy answers here, but the little wins are all the more awarding for it.

Just Stay Alive ‘verse by @dsudis | Steve Rogers/Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes/Steve Rogers/Sam Wilson | 85k | warnings: dissociation, ptsd, mentions of child murder | Comment: a really interesting story (almost a theory, I want to say) of how Bucky finds his place in Steve and Sam’s lives, the different ways they all connect with each other and what they become together.

Comedy Jokes by @softsams | Steve Rogers/Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes/Steve Rogers/Sam Wilson | 77k | warnings: suicidal thoughts, panic attacks, car accidents, body image issues | Comment: this was one of the first fics I read in the mcu fandom. a lot of regular, non-Hollywood appropriate aspects of human life are made visible in this story, and there is just so much humanity and compassion and holding space that happens here, that it blew me away.

Alexander Pierce should have died slower ‘verse by Lauralot | mostly no pairing, some Bucky Barnes/Alexander Pierce in the first few parts | 301k | warnings: literally so many. including but not limited to rape, rape recovery, ptsd, violence, etc. please read author’s warnings. Comment: a very different, more trauma-heavy take on age-play than usual. complicated, well-written, often also funny and sweet.

VENOM:

Drawn into Something ‘verse by Nonymos | Eddie Brock/Venom, Eddie Brock/Dan Lewis/Venom/Anne Weying, etc | 101 k | warnings: graphic descriptions of violence, vore(ish), consensual non-consent, alien rape fantasy, rape roleplay, etc. check author’s warnings. Comment: not really sure how to describe this one. it’s got all the elements of a good Symbrock fic - aka weird alien significant other stuff - but also polyamory with your ex and her current bf + a lot of really good (and fairly disturbing) kink. this description doesn’t do it justice, just read it (or the author’s summary at least).

came all this way (to hold our hand) by @alakeeffectgirl | Eddie Brock/Venom | 651 words | warnings: none | Comment: possibly one of the strangest things I’ve read this year? A strange mix of not-quite-porn and fluff. short and very satisfying (to me).

HARRY POTTER:

Chrysalis by starcrossedgirl | Harry Potter/Severus Snape | 85k | warnings: mental health issues, depression, panic attacks, suicidal ideation, reference to child sexual abuse, etc. please read author’s warnings. Comment: a really well written account of Snape’s traumas and Harry discovering them and trying to find the balance with their combined traumas . there can never be enough Snape whump. 

Pacify ‘verse by Chickenpets | Harry Potter/ Severus Snape | 500k (ongoing) | warnings: again, so, so many. graphic descriptions of violence, underage sex, ptsd, torture, panic attacks, etc. please check author’s warnings. Comment: this is both a very interesting and extremely detailed retelling of the last two books (and beyond), as well as the greatest love story ever told, as well as a lovely description of a (morally extremely dubious, of course, but that goes without saying) hardcore bdsm relationship. I like bdsm fic where the bdsm serves a psychological or practical purpose and isn’t merely a kink, and this very much hits the mark with that. it also isn’t as simple as you might think. very, very creative and well-written.

Quid Pro Quo by anonymous | Harry Potter/Severus Snape | 88 k (ongoing) | warnings: past child abuse | Comment: a really nice account of a marriage of convenience turning into something deeper. love the sparse and obscure way Snape is written.

Under the Same Sky by @writcraft | Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter| 37k | warnings: none. | Comment: what I said about psychologically motivated bdsm applies here too – not bdsm, but kinky in a very compelling and casual way. don’t know if it’s romance with a side of kink or kink with a side of romance, but very nice either way.

This was one that didn’t really get as much love as I had hoped, haha. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but still. I put a lot of my heart and soul into this fic, and I’m very proud of it. The plan was for 2-4k of romantical Spideypool smut, and somehow it turned into, like... processing grief and loss and such. idk, man.

But somehow I managed to make the most of it and sat down and started writing. It’s very dialogue heavy, and probably not one of my best works, but it’s got a special place in my heart.
