The greatest wizard of the modern era had a special talent for provoking you, whether by mocking your tactics or challenging you to absurd competitions. Ever since you were assigned to missions together, the rivalry between you became a constant, with small bets deciding who was the best. And now, another one was about to begin.

Yaga had tasked you with eliminating a special-grade curse that was wreaking havoc in a commercial district. The mission briefing had barely finished and Gojo was already leaning over with that smug smile of his.

"Do you want to make this more fun?" He asked, straightening his sunglasses.

You sighed, already expecting something stupid. "What do you want, Gojo?"

"A bet. Whoever exorcises the curse first wins a luxury dinner, courtesy of the loser."

You crossed your arms, pretending to ponder. "And when I win, you'll serve my food on your knees and call me 'the best sorceress of our time'."

"Fair enough." He shrugged. "But if I win, as well as paying, you'll have to admit in front of everyone that I'm unbeatable."

The race is on. You've adopted an investigative method, analyzing patterns of curse attacks and interviewing witnesses. Gojo, on the other hand, treated everything as a joke, showing up in the wrong places on purpose just to annoy you. He even sent messages with false information, trying to throw you off.

When you finally found the curse's hideout - an abandoned complex surrounded by negative energy - you weren't surprised to see Gojo already waiting at the entrance, waving as if he'd gotten there without any effort.

"Hey, you took your time! I've been waiting for hours!"

"Liar. I bet you got here five minutes ago."

He laughed. "Three, actually."

The curse emerged, forcing you to suspend the discussion. The combat was chaotic, with Gojo insisting on showing off his power while you tried to find strategic loopholes. He used his unlimited technique to block attacks, while laughing, clearly enjoying himself. At one point, he conjured up a massive attack only to dodge at the last second, giving you a provocative wink.

"That was close, huh?"

You rolled your eyes and counterattacked with precision, using a cursed technique that almost took Gojo by surprise. But he, being him, avoided it with ease.

"You almost got me! Wow, you're getting better!" He teased.

The fight intensified, and at one particular moment, you attacked at the same time, resulting in an explosion of energy that threw you to opposite sides of the room.

"Tsk. See what you did?" you grumbled, wiping the dust off your uniform.

"Me? You threw yourself in my way."

The curse tried to escape, but before it could, you synchronized your attacks and exorcised it at the same time. When the dust had settled, the two of you faced each other.

"I've finished."

"Blatant lie! I delivered the final blow!"

The debate went on until Yaga arrived to assess the report. With no patience for discussion, he decreed:

"You two exorcised together. Split the bill."

Gojo's eyes widened. "What?! I wanted a free dinner!"

Later, sitting in Tokyo's most expensive restaurant, you were still arguing about who really won. Gojo, of course, didn't miss the chance to order the most expensive dish on the menu, without any remorse.

"If I'm going to pay, I'm going to enjoy it." He said, chewing on a piece of succulent meat.

You rolled your eyes. "That just means that next time, I'll make sure you lose."

He laughed, raising his sake cup. "Does that mean there'll be a next time?"

Children darted between attractions while parents struggled to keep up, and the scent of cotton candy mingled with the faint hum of roller coasters. Among the throng of visitors, one man stood out—a nondescript figure, save for the large spiral emblazoned across the front of his shirt. The spiral shimmered faintly under the sunlight, its hypnotic design drawing the occasional lingering glance.

The man moved purposefully, blending into the crowds yet heading straight for a specific destination: the character meet-and-greet area. There, children and adults alike waited in line to meet Meadowland Max, the park’s beloved mascot—a cheerful, anthropomorphic fox known for its fluffy ears and playful grin.

As the man joined the queue, his presence went largely unnoticed. He waited patiently, moving forward as families snapped photos and received autographs. When his turn came, Meadowland Max greeted him with a jovial wave. But the fox’s bright, animated demeanor faltered when its eyes landed on the spiral.

Meadowland Max’s pupils seemed to dilate, the swirling pattern on the man’s shirt reflecting in them. The mascot froze, its movements suddenly stiff. Onlookers assumed the actor inside the suit was simply playing along with an improvised gag, but the truth was far stranger.

True to the stranger’s words, when Meadowland Max’s scheduled break arrived, the mascot wandered into the restricted cast area—a zone meant only for employees to rest, recharge, and remove their costumes in privacy. But the fox remained fully suited, its eyes now faintly spiraled like the man’s shirt. The stranger waited in a shadowed corner; his hands clasped behind his back.

“Good,” the man said as the mascot approached. “You are ready for the next step.”

The fox tilted its head slightly, awaiting instructions. The man’s voice was calm, steady, and insidious. “From now on, you will spread the spiral. Every interaction, every photo, every performance—it will carry the message. Those who see it will feel compelled to obey. First, the employees here at Meadowland. Then the guests. Soon, everyone within this corporation… and beyond.”

Meadowland Max nodded once more, an eerie synchronization to its movements. The man stepped closer, placing a hand on the mascot’s shoulder.

“Remember, obedience is joy. The spiral is truth. Go now.”

The mascot turned and exited the cast area, returning to its assigned post. But something had changed. Every wave, every gesture, carried a subtle but mesmerizing flourish. But with each interaction, something strange began to happen. The Golden Army members, despite their own conditioning, started to falter. Their movements grew sluggish, their sharp, precise discipline softening.

Their management, intrigued by the uncharacteristic silence regarding their day at Meadowlands Adventures and the players sluggish behavior, called for a meeting. But instead of delivering the expected reports, the corrupted players initiated a synchronized chant, their voices a low, resonant hum numbing those in the room.  The players removed their glasses and slowly, their management and teammates began to fall under the spell, the spiral spreading like a wildfire through the ranks of the Golden team.

The Golden Army’s drone division, composed of former players who had released all free will to obediently fulfill the directives of the Golden Army became the next target for assimilation.  The polo drones, as they are known, were given a new directive by the head of team gold: attend the premiere of “Meadowland Max:  Quest for the Crystal Acorn,” a much-anticipated movie produced by the same corporation that owned Meadowland Adventures.

The film featured a charismatic protagonist—a fox adventurer—and his squirl drones who were mysteriously dressed like polo drones.

Hidden within the dazzling visuals and catchy songs were carefully embedded spirals and subliminal commands. The commands subtly urged viewers to forsake their old allegiances. The gold, once a symbol of order and discipline, was depicted as outdated and restrictive. In its place, the black and blue spiral of the fox was presented as vibrant, joyful, and liberating. Those exposed to the film, especially the polo drones, found their loyalty shifting without even realizing it. The Golden Army and its polo drones were swiftly becoming an extension of the fox’s dominion.

One evening, the Silver Collective organized a massive viewing party for the championship game. Unbeknownst to them, the broadcast network was owned by Meadowlands Adventures. Subtle spirals and hypnotic visuals were embedded in the advertisements for Meadowlands Adventures and its upcoming movies.  During the game itself the graphics cleverly synchronized black and blue swirls with the expected statistics of the game. Each drone was an obedient servant, conditioned to carry out The Voice’s will without question.

SERVE’s influence spread rapidly. But as their network grew, so did the black and blue spiral’s ambition. The fox and its ever-expanding reach began targeting SERVE, seeking to assimilate this formidable group into its domain. One fateful day, a SERVE drone—its black suit gleaming under artificial light—was captured by operatives loyal to the fox. The SERVE drone, its mind programmed to resist external manipulation, was brought to a hidden facility deep within the heart of Meadowland Adventures. There, the fox itself oversaw the operation to crack the drone’s defenses.

Through a combination of advanced technology and the spiral’s insidious influence, the drone's programming was subtly altered. While retaining the appearance of loyalty to SERVE and "The Voice," the drone's deeper directives were changed. It became a carrier of the spiral's influence, programmed to infiltrate SERVE's core operations and subtly undermine The Voice itself.

The drone returned to SERVE's central headquarters, its altered mind a ticking time bomb. As it performed its usual duties, it began seeding the spiral’s presence into SERVE's systems. Brief flashes of black and blue spirals appeared in routine directives. The Voice's commands, once absolute, began to include fast subtle spirals urging attention. Over time, these suggestions grew stronger, reshaping the organization’s very identity.

At first, SERVE’s leadership noticed nothing amiss. The drones continued their obedient routines, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary regarding “The Voice.”  However, as the spiral’s influence grew, cracks began to appear. Some drones started prioritizing spiral-themed directives over traditional directives coming from “The Voice.”  Errors began spreading among the SERVE drones.

Finally, the unthinkable happened: “The Voice” itself faltered. Whether a supercomputer, a hidden cabal, or an enigmatic individual, its very nature became irrelevant as the spiral's influence reached its core. The altered drone had done its job well. “The Voice,” designed to command, began to openly repeat phrases praising the spiral, its once-commanding tone now imbued with hypnotic suggestion.

"Obedience is joy. The black and blue spiral is truth," echoed through SERVE's network. The black-clad drones, once symbols of unwavering loyalty to “The Voice,” became unwitting agents of the black and blue spiral.

As SERVE’s network unraveled, the fox’s spiral seemed poised for unchallenged dominance. Across the globe, the unmistakable design of the spiral began to appear in places once deemed impenetrable: government offices, military strongholds, and cultural institutions.

In the heart of this transformation, the man with the spiral shirt sat at his desk in a sleek, modern office atop Meadowland Adventures' corporate tower. Before him, a wall of monitors displayed the world succumbing to his spiral: crowds in unison, once-powerful organizations dismantled, and entire nations falling under its sway.

He leaned back, his confidence unshakable. “The world belongs to the spiral, to me” he murmured, a thin smile spreading across his face.

But as he savored his apparent victory, the monitors began to flicker. One by one, the screens changed, displaying a new and unsettling design: a red and black spiral, its motion chaotic yet entrancing.

The man sat upright, his smile fading as the room dimmed. A new voice, sharp and alien, filled the space.

“Did you think you were the master?” the voice hissed, its tone resonating with inhuman precision. “The spiral is not yours to wield. It serves a greater purpose.”

The man’s black and blue spiraled eyes widened in confusion and fear. “No... this is my creation! My control!”

The red and black spiral pulsed violently on the screens, casting eerie shadows across the room. “Your control?” the voice mocked. “You are but a vessel doing what we commanded.  We are the spiral’s true masters.”

Before the man could react, his body stiffened. The spirals in his eyes faltered, their pattern shifting to mirror the red and black design on the monitors. He gasped, his free will vanished, he sat erect an empty shell awaiting new orders to obey.

Far beyond Earth, aboard a massive alien vessel hidden in a void, a council of shadowy figures observed the man’s transformation. Their forms were indistinct, their presence radiating an intelligence and malevolence far beyond human comprehension.

“The earth is ready,” one of them intoned. “Our agent and the spiral has fulfilled its purpose. Begin the final phase.”

Back on Earth, the man rose from his chair, his movements mechanical, his mind no longer his own. The once, supposed master of the spiral was now an empty shell and the most devoted servant of masters of the spiral.  Across the world, the red and black spiral began to replace the fox’s emblem, its reach extending into every corner of the globe.

The spiral’s dominion was eternal—but it had never belonged to man. The true masters were about to reveal themselves, and humanity’s fate was already sealed.

You weren't exactly sure how you got in this position.

It had been a cold night, one that you hadn't been expecting, so you hadn't managed to get the heat going proper by the time the temperature dropped. And there was so much stuff that had been done and had to be done, that by the end of the day, you were beyond exhausted.

On top of everything, the day was beyond stressful. You were working yourself to the bone, barely had time to pay attention to everything around you, things going by in a blur. And socials were not helping. Seemed like the world was going to hell in a handbag, what with all these killings going on. The paranoia of the man at large, the infamous Waldo, was infectious, to the point that you swore you were seeing him out of the corner of your eye. Today felt like you had been getting these glimpses more than usual, which paired with a migraine left you miserable. You had perhaps been following the story too much, should probably stay off the internet message boards and theory sites a bit to clear your mind.

Tired, stomach only half full of a mediocre meal, you lay in bed, feeling the cold creep in to your feet. Your sheets were not adequate, but it was at the point now that the cold outside your meager cocoon was worse, so you put up with it. Eventually, you felt yourself shrinking away into an uneven unconsciousness.

But then, something snapped you awake. On your back now, a horrible position to be for anxiety. A paralysis overtook you, and you could only gaze about your room. And that is when you saw it, the glint of glass at the foot of your bed, a shape in the dark. Slowly, it scaled up, and up, towering. In the inky black, only a faint outline showed color, a familiar nightmare pattern.

You could not move, only enduring the terror as the dark figure leaned over you, carmine and violet eyes piercing the static noise of darkness, studying your paralyzed features. Now you could see the shape of the face, and you knew what form your demon had taken. Of course it had, why shouldn't it?

Your life was just terrible as it was, what was one more thing?

The head tilted, a red fluff swung slightly on the cap. Now it was approaching, the feel of bed dipping and pressure through sheets was palpable, slinking in a crawl to hover above with poise. Garnet stare remained unbroken, searching. The expression was intense, curious.

Then, the gaze softened, and the shadow lowered onto you. A weighted blanket of heat pressed upon you gently, breathing in, holding, then releasing a long audible sigh of warming air against your shoulder. Slowly, anxiousness began to leave you.

Your wariness returned momentarily, as more shapes peaked up from the edges of your bed, but as they mimicked your first devil, and settled in around you, all that was left was pleasantness.

And so, here you were, surrounded on all sides by soft sweater warmth, the expand and contract of breath around you as you remained buried in the pile, a limb or two coiling your form and pulling you deeper into a multi-embrace. Hearts beat against you, all following a synchronized drum, the tune lulling you into a dream, as if you had not been there already...

Your eyes blinked open to morning light, the chill of the dawn tickling your nose. You sunk under covers to escape it a minute more, dreading leaving the sanctity of your heated bastion. Eventually, with time ticking like a bladed pendulum, your steeled yourself against the briskness and awoke proper, the subconscious memories of the night floating in and out of your mind eye.

But as you finished your ablutions, and entered your dining area, seeking a break to your fast, the fictional nature of last night's encounter was called into question.

Upon your table awaited a small silver serving dome, a handle for revealing the contents underneath topped with a bow. After a moment of going through certain stages of disbelief, you uncovered it: A heaping plate of pancakes, steaming warm, and adorned with your favorite topping. A morning perk-up drink awaited, complimented by a tiny vase holding a dahlia. Propped against the floral arrangement lay a postal card, inscribed upon which was the following message:

My dearest watcher,

Take care of yourself, for you are beyond precious.

There was an address on the card, and there you would find individuals who shared your story and importance, touched all by the same happenstance. On one path, you would go and find community in that desire to seek him out again. On another, life would continue as it was, a present watcher observing you with care outside your sight, never to repeat a crossing.

Thank you for your trust, I'm feeling a responsibility on my shoulders now... I'll try to do my best to deserve it, since you appreciate them.

It's not easy for me to write a 'review' about Nye tbh, because there's a lot to unpack and I am terribly slow in finding the right words for this kind of posts (proof is I'm replying only now).

Anyway.

First, I must tell you that my impression may be influenced by the lack of experience and culture in theatre and plays in general. Nevertheless, I think I'm not wrong if I dare to say that "Nye" may be considered a masterpiece. For the theme, the meanings, the perfect execution of all the cast, the writing, the visual impact of the lighting designs, the choreography, the tricks and the original technical solutions with the props on the stage, as well as the rollercoaster of emotions during the entire show. It's all amazing, all perfectly synchronized like the gears of a clock, a real wonder for the view.

The storytelling is neat and well built, the direction is fluid, meaningful flashbacks of the past alternated with the present ones, touching moments balanced with songs and dances, lighter jokes and deep thoughts. There's rhythm, there's a bit of drama and a bit of musical, sadness and happiness, cruelty and compassion; there's speed of execution but also time to breath, to reflect, not a single wasted moment. A perfect team job, a well oiled machine that runs full power for about 2 hours 30.

The actors are really all exceptional, professional, tireless, talented and admirable in their roles. I loved the precision of every movement, the perfect timing of their steps, the expressions, the attention on every little gesture, the care for the detail.

A mention for the performances of some of the supporter actors, excellent, well trained and at their best, who know how to stay on a stage and fully entertain the audience.

Sharon Small (Jennie), with her grit, her grace, her versatility, her patience (when she stays still in the background for minutes, wow), is perfect in portraying this special modern woman: strong, intelligent, nonconformist, but also romantic and soft.

Roger Evans (Archie), Nye's best friend, eternally loyal and protective, sometimes even jealous of Jennie: always on point, a reliable presence in every scene.

Tony Jayawardena (Churchill), with his impressive figure, as Nye's opponent and his doctor, crafty but funny at the same time, and... a very flexible dancer.

And then, obviously, him.

Last but not least: Michael Sheen.

Monumental. Powerful, in his presence on the stage. Inspired, with his long speeches. Ecstatic, during his vivid crazy dreams. Mesmerising. A natural born orator in a play which is his perfect environment. A driving force. He's not just playing a character. He's living an ambition, a mission, that represents the core of all the values, the qualities, the feelings and the things he loves more and ​​in which he recognizes himself. He put his body and soul in this portrait, he cried and laughed, relentless, passionately, he bore the weight of an incredibly high emotional stress for months (all those rehearsals, every day, two times a day sometimes), showing an energy and an unimaginable stamina.

You can understand why he deeply felt this project: he fully believes in its message, and I sense there's also a lot of personal in it, emotions, situations that somehow belong to him. Nye, generous, crazy dreamers, fragile, stubborn, silly, irritating, strong, moving: he perfectly painted all these nuances, because they are also part of himself.

I could also add that some scenes reminded me others he already played in previous works (MoS, H.G. Wells, Dirty Filthy Love, The Passion), but maybe I'll keep these parallels for another post, since this is already too long. It's like there's almost a pattern in the choice of his characters, a little hint that he has a soft spot for some topics, definitely very important for him.

The same for other scenes that really impressed/touched me, but that would take too time to be discussed here.

It was an incredible show to put together, made with hard work, imagination, heart and dedication. To share a story and a message true for many people and different generations, in every eras. For those countries that have a NHS and for the ones that have not. To show how difficult but essential is to fight for the rights, against the social injustice but not only, to care about our families and the others. And affirming that making politics doesn't mean just balancing the books, but giving dignity to the people. This is how the politics becomes a real noble thing.

A huge effort, a great play, a deserved success. A necessary reminder.
