changing the game

i coded an interactive game thing on AO3. in the spirit of sam reich, i made a bunch of my friends play this before i posted it :)

i'm pretty sure i've once again broke the ao3 end notes.

making this work has actually been insane. as much as this fic is my own work, it has been influenced by so many other people too.

i remember watching the rick perry documentary on dropout when it first came out. it kind of restarted something in me that i have long forgotten.

you can draw a straight line from me watching that documentary to me learning to code for fanfic reasons.

this entire thing has been an exercise in connecting with other creatives in various fandom spaces to make something i found cool and fun.

i mean, sudokus on ao3??? who would have thought.

making the connections game was really fun too. i learnt so much about combinators, its wild. i feel like a part of my brain has been unlocked.

anyways, i hope people have fun and read this.

Yourspace, a modern "Myspace" page template

I've been making pages for (formerly) Neocities and my personal site for going on 8 years now, and it turns out that I have a lot of old ass codes that I don't really like or use anymore. So, I've decided to start uploading some of them!

This is "Yourspace", a modern Myspace-based layout code that ditches the horrid table layouts, with bonus compatibility for mobile screens. It's not compatible with old Myspace themes as a result, but should be much easier to customise to make up for it. Intended for Neocities, Nekoweb, etc., it does require basic knowledge of HTML and CSS to use -- since it's older it's not my cleanest work, but should be readable enough that it's (hopefully) not difficult to work with.

It’s been a rough time to be a Solas hater. His last-minute romance in Inquisition is very popular, and even if you didn’t slip him Fade tongue, his status as the games’ new big bad means that every pre-game interview about Veilguard was very Solas-centric. Whether or not the game would make good on the promise of Solas as a character was a huge topic of discussion, and whether or not it did is a current matter of debate. However, what is it exactly that Solas’s writing promised? The narrative issues with Veilguard have been spoken about at length, but I haven’t seen anyone address the state that Inquisition left the franchise in, and especially how so many of these issues center around lore reveals and writing choices made in relation to one character. In short: in this essay, I want to argue that it is, in fact, Solas’s fault.

Shower big idea today was making a website that essentially goes through the Eras of Robotnik. First load it’s the hyper sleek Robotnik Industries page with of course a page about himself and his accomplishments. Perhaps a slightly unfinished section that has a note that Stone should fix it. Then somewhere, there’s a little blue blip. If you click on it, the page reloads to an article on the destruction of San Francisco and the related articles mention the pyramids and highway attack. And one of the related articles is a link to the Mean Bean under new management! Look at it, so nice. Oh but there’s a little thing about mushroom coffee. Click that and get a long log of Robotnik’s time at the mushroom planet. So on and so forth. Personal blog of someone who saw the egg pod come down from space. Wedding registry for Rachel and Russell. News broadcast about the giant green light off the coast of Hawaii. Of course a specific Robotnik page in bright lime green for when he has powers. Patent for crab mech. Streaming website with vods. News report of final message…

I think the godhead Robotnik page would be his regular Robotnik industries page but every red highlight has gone lime green and it’s just a large manifesto. And somewhere at the bottom is the clickable portion that takes you to mech manual.

The mech manual would have a bunch of instruction pictographs like a furniture assembly diagram. But they’re all Stone since it’s made for him. Instructions of how to maintain the engine. Keep smiling at fig. 1 Robotnik

There can be a DLC for the ‘pre’ movie stuff. Things like newspaper articles about a young Ivo being sooo smart, the job listing at Robotnik Industries, etc. By DLC I guess I mean a link at the bottom of the ‘who is Dr. Ivo Robotnik and why did he save the world’ article.

I really hate to post something like this on an account called uke-zone, but there's not much choice. I'm going to be homeless in a month.

For the past 2 years, I’ve been stuck in a toxic job because I took the first one I could get without reliable transport. I’ve been working as a web admin, making $14,400 a year. My rent is $12,360 a year, not including bills. I scraped by, constantly stressed, and exhausted. I lived alone after leaving an abusive family environment, so I just kept going.

Four days ago I was given a termination notice���the day after I refused to violate FCC guidelines. They wanted me to add a static list of customers to an email list, without allowing them to unsubscribe, and I couldn’t let myself be complicit or get hit with a $5,000 fine.

No savings, no support system, and no cushion. I won't survive the next month if I'm evicted. There is just straight up nowhere to go.

In Texas, unemployment takes at least 4 weeks, assuming no disputes, and with my employer that's not happening. Rent is due. I'm looking down the barrel of being homeless again, and would frankly rather be dead.

I need to survive the next 30 days to not be constantly on the verge of losing everything. Going back to living paycheck-to-paycheck with no security and no safety net isn't an option. I was terrified one mistake or one bad turn could leave me with nothing until it did.

hearts, or what grows in forgotten places

there’s a hole in my chest, everyone says or perhaps they just think it, their gazes unsure,  avoiding the place where they expect to see viscera and an empty cage.

i'm not sure what they mean. i once thought that perhaps my heart had run away, or that i’d broken it like a toddler with a new toy,  so shiny it must be ruined for love of the game.

but i soon forgot to notice the lack i’d been sure everyone could see. i forgot to stay up waiting for my heart to come back  to roost behind the safety of these bars of bone.

it went unmentioned for so long, you see.  but maybe it was because for years i shone too brightly  for them to notice the shadow of absence, and now that i'm finding my place in the sky, i've settled and slowed down enough for people to take a closer look.

i forgot.

i don't know if there was anything there  before the moment i realized it was gone; i don't know if maybe there’s been something else  nestled in that space behind my ribs, between my lungs— my whole life, the ache at the center of my chest perhaps the growing pains  of a garden hidden, delicate and twisting, unnoticed as people’s gazes skittered away.

i cannot dig out this living thing rooted in my chest. i will not snip off the flowers just to prove to you there’s something  there where you think you’ll only see blood and carved out meat. this garden of gold roses is mine to shelter in the dark, sharp thorns pricking soft garden walls–but it’s mine.
