As someone who learnt english as a second language via textbook, I have to say "flying by the seat of my pants" is a hilarious idiom xD
It's the first time I've seen/heard it.
Could you share another one you like using?
Idk about idioms specifically, but there's a bunch of phrases I learned from my mom!
Lord love a duck! (Incredulous, like 'oh my god')
Lord suffer in sheep dip! (Sheep dip meaning sheep poop. Incredulous, but for annoying things- like 'are you kidding me?')
Is there a piano tied to your ass? ('Don't be lazy, do it yourself')
Someone's cruising for a bruising. (You're picking a fight.)
I don't give a rat's rip. ('I don't care'- a rat's 'rip' is it's butt crack.)
Pull up a stump! (Get yourself a chair, sit down.)
Everybody out of the pool! (Get out of the car)
I'm flying by the seat of my pants. (I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm doing it.)
Don't go blowing smoke up my ass. (Don't over-compliment me, don't flatter me, don't stroke my ego, don't tell me positive lies)
Looks like it's gonna rain on our parade. (A storm is coming.)
Sorry to rain on your parade. (I've given you bad news- can be used sincerely or sarcastically to denote sympathy for incurring a bad mood.)
Better button that lip. (Stop talking.)
Someone's gonna stick a boot up your ass. ('Stick a boot up your ass'- fight you, beat you, kick your ass.)
Stick that lip out any further, and a pigeon'll shit on it. (Stop whining.)
Suck it up, buttercup. (Stop whining.)
Dumber than a fence post. (Very stupid.)
The back forty. (The wild or forested area behind a rural home. The 'forty' being forty acres, or farmland.)
Don't go begging for a fat lip. (Whatever you're saying or doing is going to bother people and get you in trouble.)
What on God's green earth (What the fuck)
I'm sweating like a pig in a porta-potty (like a pig in a plastic outhouse- I'm very warm, it's hot here)
He thinks the universe flew out of his ass. (He thinks he's more impressive than he is.)
Your mouth wrote a cheque your ass couldn't cash. (You promised more than you were capable of providing.)
You've got a horseshoe up your ass. (You're very, very lucky.)
Taking a dirt nap. (Dead.)
Pushing (up) daisies. (Dead.)
Give me forty acres to turn this rig around. (I need time and space to move this large, heavy, or unwieldy thing. Usually about navigating a vehicle. Taken from a song lyric.)
Jesus take the wheel. (God help me, I can't handle this, I give up.)
Gone belly-up. (Has died.)
We've got a floater. (This one is dead.)
Herding cats. (Trying to organize chaos, managing an impossibly complicated situation.)
I've got a black thumb. (I am bad at growing plants, all my plants die- reference to having a 'green thumb', or being good at growing plants.)
Stop trackin' floor cookies. (Floor cookies are bits of animal shit that fall off your work boots- 'tracking floor cookies' means wearing your boots in the house; take your shoes off at the door.)
Running around like a headless chicken. (Frantic, disorganized, stressed out by many tasks or panicked by a big situation.)
Spinning my wheels. (Waiting around for something to happen, getting nowhere, frustrated by inactivity, not making any progress towards a goal.)
He's gonna blow a gasket. (He's going to lose his temper, he's going to be angry.)
They'll tan your hide. (They'll punish you severely; usually through violence. Specifically in reference to a spanking.)
He's a few bricks short a load. (He's not clever / he doesn't think things through / he's crazy)
Not the sharpest tool in the shed. (Not the smartest person. Very dumb, clumsy, or absent-minded.)
I'm not going to bail you out. (Not going to save your sinking boat- not going to help you out of your bad situation.)
Looks like things are going south. (The situation is growing worse.)
I'll start making tracks. (I'll leave now, I'll start working, I'll get going.)
He's fucking the dog. (He's not being productive, he's doing a bad job, he's made things worse, he's screwing around.)
He's making puppies. (Less graphic version of 'fucking the dog'.)
Plant your ass. (Sit.)
Playing grab-ass. (Procrastinating- accomplishing nothing, slowing people down.)
He couldn't find his ass in the dark. (He's stupid, ineffective, underqualified, or incompetent.)
He couldn't pour water out of a boot if the instructions were on the heel. (He is unbelievably, comically dumb or ineffective. He can't do anything right.)
One foot in the ground. (Dying, or half-dead.)
I'm kicking rocks. (I'm not doing anything productive.)
I'm hauling ass. (I'm running away.)
Madder than a wet hen. (Very, very angry.)
Like I said I'm not sure that these are all idioms but they're all the phrases and sayings from my childhood that I can remember right now
EDIT: Cannot BELIEVE I forgot my mom's favourite
52. Wish in one hand, shit in the other, see which gets filled first. (Wishes don't come true by themselves)
Plus some more I forgot:
53. You make a better door than a window. (You're in the way of my view.)
54. You can take a long walk off a short pier. (Go fuck yourself.)
55. He's about as sharp as a bowling ball. (He's stupid.)
56. Scoot your poot. (Move over.)
57. Not my first rodeo. (I know what I'm doing.)
58. He's built like a brick shithouse. (He's broad and sturdy and very strong, solid.)
59. I smell bacon. (I saw a cop nearby.)
60. I don't want to hear a peep. (Stop talking.)
61. You're thinking with the wrong head. (You're making bad decisions because you're horny.)
62. I'd lose my ass/head if it wasn't tied on. (I'm very absent-minded, forgetful.)
63. That went down like a lead balloon. (That situation was bad.)

a.n: this is for week 2 of jinxed July; night swim; @thatdammchickennugget @finalgirllx <3
Burning wood had always been a favorite smell of yours. You couldn’t quite explain why, you didn’t grow up in farmland or with any major rural land area around you. You were city through and through, but something about the smell of a bonfire made your soul tingle with satisfaction. It probably also helped that you were surrounded by some of your favorite people on a secluded area of lakeland with your guys’ own private cabin where you were participating in the usual debauchery that your little group usually entangled themselves with.
Currently you were watching three drunken fools (read Mattheo, Enzo and Theo) try and create a three person pyramid because Draco bet them that they couldn’t do it. “Berkshire, you bloody fucking idiot, of course you cannot be the top of the pyramid, look at your shoulders, you’re bottom material!” Mattheo had his hands pointing down at the sand next to where Theo was already on all fours, “Yeah, c’mon Enz, embrace your true calling. We all know you’re a bottom.” Theo sent him a playful wink and Enzo shot him the finger, “Yeah, fuck you both. I can score any person I want and you guys can barely score those inside the same house as you.”
Enzo continued his grumbling and he crawled down onto the sand next to his lanky counterpart. Mattheo’s drunken grin grew only wider as he started to climb on top of the pair, a hand on each one of their inner shoulders and what you could only assume was his boney knees digging into their backs from the groans and grumbles. “Oi, will you two shut up? Hey! Someone take a picture!” You rolled your eyes, grabbing the camera and standing up, “Alright, boys, say cheese!” The three cheese’d in unison before a ‘mysterious’ gust of wind had them tumbling down in a tangle of limbs.
“You’re dead, Malfoy. Get your pale ass over here! Oh, no don’t go hiding behind your girlfriend, you think I won’t get to you cause Parkinson is there,” Theo’s voice was growing quieter despite him shouting. Your fingers laced with Blaise’s as you pulled him down the back steps of the cabin and closer toward the lake. “Where are you taking me, good lookin?” Blaise’s voice was smooth like velvet as his eyes lazily watched your form drag him down to the beach. Your toes hit the cool sand, a nice contrast from earlier in the day, “I was getting kind of bored of the fire, fancied a swim. Do you fancy one, too, B?”
Blaise quickened his pace, wrapping his arms around you and lifting you up by your middle, a small giggle emitting from your throat. “Oh, a swim, huh, you fancy a swim is it darling? What kind of swim hmm?” Blaise let you down near the edge of the water, arms still encircling your waist. You wrapped your arms around his neck, “I was thinking…maybe…the skinny kind?” Blaise’s eyebrows shot up, “You wanna go skinny dipping in the lake?” You bit your lip as you nodded, “Is that bad? Do you wanna do it? Yes or no, hmm?” Blaise gripped your hips a little rougher, “You know I can’t say no to you.” You dropped your arms from his neck, instead gripping the hem of your shirt, “Yeah, I was counting on that.”
You turned your back to him them, pulling your shirt over your head before pulling your shorts and underwear off as well. Turning back to face him, now fully nude you smirked, “What’s taking you so long, Zabini? You joining me, or are you just gonna watch?” Blaise licked his lips as he watched your naked form walk backwards towards the lake, “You know I’m not opposed to watching.” You put on a playful pout,“C’mon, B, don’t make me go in alone, you can never say no, remember?” Your tone was teasing yet pleading. In a flash, Blaise was out of his clothes, his pace quickening to catch up with you. You turned, slightly sprinting towards the water as he ran to catch up with you.
Your feet splashed as you took larger steps into the water, you could hear Blaise right behind you as you dove into the lake. You tried to swim a little further out when you felt two strong arms wrap around your waist and pull you upward. You were laughing when you surfaced, Blaise’s now bare chest pressed against your back, his lips close to your neck, “Running away from me now hmm? Now what’s that all about?” You turned round in his grip, wrapping your legs around his waist. His hands moved to grip your ass, pulling you impossibly closer, “I just wanted to make sure you’d follow.”
Blaise hummed in response, his nose brushing against yours, “I’ll follow you anywhere, love.” You open your mouth to respond but never get the chance as his lips crash into yours, one of his hands cupping the back of your head while the other gropes your ass under water. He pushes his tongue against yours, demanding, rough, like he’d been thinking about doing this the whole night but couldn’t think of how to get you alone. “Was this your plan all along, hmm?” he asked, hands exploring your body as his lips trail down the expanse of your neck, “Wanted to get distance from the others just so you could have your way with me?”
He flips you then, your back now to his chest. You could see the cabin in the short distance, see the bonfire on the back deck, see all your friends still drinking and talking with one another. One of his hands makes its way between your legs as he speaks once more, “Is this what you wanted, love? Want me to fuck you in front of all our friends? Without them knowing? So fucking dirty, aren’t ya?” A gasping moan was all that you could manage as his hand between your thighs quickened its pace. “Don’t get shy on me now, darling. Use that pretty mouth of yours, tell me what you want, yeah?”
“I, ah-fuck, I want you to fuck me in front of our friends…want you to fuck me right here without them knowing…oh, fuck, B!” You were losing your ability to speak your thoughts with the ministrations he was doing between your legs. Blaise wrapped one arm about your waist, pulling his other hand away, a low whine emitting from your throat at the sudden feeling of bareness. “Shh, it’s alright love, I’m gonna give you what you want right now.” You could feel how hard Blaise was on the curve of your ass, could feel his fist as he gripped himself, lining himself up. “Fucking hell, there it is,” he moaned against the shell of your ear as he slowly sunk himself into you, “fuck baby you feel so good.”
A whining moan left your lips when he started rocking his hips into you, “That’s it baby, feel good hmm? Like having my big cock buried deep inside you while our friends are just meters away, yeah? What would they say if they knew you were being a whore for me right now? Taking me hard and raw right where they can see it?” You were at a loss for words, both from pleasure and at the pure filth Blaise was whispering into your ear. You gripped harder onto the arm wrapped around your waist, surely leaving little crescent moon shapes into this skin. Your other hand found solace between your legs, wanting that extra dose of pleasure while Blaise’s hips pounded into you from behind.
“That’s it, baby, go on. Fuck- play with yourself, I’m ‘bout to fill you up. I know you’re close, ah-can feel you squeezin’ m’cock…fuck, love, that’s it.” Blaise could feel that you were nearing the edge, could feel your muscles contracting around him. He slid a hand up your chest and to your throat, squeezing, “Don’t want you to make a noise when you come, think you can do that for me? Can you be my quiet little whore?” His grip on your throat had you tumbling over the edge, your orgasm hitting you like a wave of intense pleasure. Blaise buried his face in the crook of your neck as you felt him spill into you, “Fucking, bloody hell…”
He thrust a few more lazy pumps before slowly pulling out of you. You turned in his arms, fiercely connecting your lips with his. When you finally pulled back, a smirk was graced on Blaise’s face, “Careful now, love, or we might go another round before we make it back to the cabin.” You lightly toyed with the hairs on the back of his neck, “S’that so? What if that was my plan?” Blaise opened his mouth to give what you were sure would’ve been a cheeky response when you heard the chaos of your friends coming down the length of the beach.
“Oi, what’re you two doing in there?” Mattheo shouted, pointing towards the water with the neck of the bottle in his hand. Enzo leaned down beside him, picking something up from the sand, “What the hell are thes–oh my god,” Enzo faked a gagging noise, “Are these Blaise’s boxers?” Enzo looked up, mouth agape as he dropped the piece of clothing like it was on fire. “Awh, what’s wrong, Enzie, don’t wanna join us naked in the lake?” You teased.
Theo shrugged his shoulders, pulling his shirt off and tossing it in the pile. “Theo, don’t you fucking dare come in here,” Blaise warned. Theo shrugged his shorts off, standing tall and shaking his hips side to side before running towards the water, “I’m coming for you Zabini, get ready to give the Italian stallion a big ol’ kiss.”

Really hope you guys like this, and woo first piece for earthspark since I've started watching the series. Hope you guys enjoy the chaos which is to come.

The Malto's property is a busy one, Twitch yelling at the others as they practise. "Keep up slow poke Twitch's madly zips between the hay bales strewn across the yard, chassis buzzing with energy. "Gotta be faster than that, Jawbreaker!" She shouted gleefully, panels flared and fans roaring.
Hashtag revved her engine competitively, darting around the yard in tight circles as she sought an opening to knock Thrust off his pedes laughter echoing from all of them. Nearby, Nightshade sculpted away as they planned out new projects.
Dot smiles as she watches her kids run around the yard, and back and forth from the barn. "Play nice you lot!" She calls out while finishing her coffee. The sound of  propellers alerts her to Megatron's arrival. She looks out the other side of the widow with a smile as Megatron touches down. "Megs wasn't expecting to see you today" she calls out while walking out to meet him.
His optics scans the surrounding farmland, ensuring all remains secure within guarded borders, before his powerful lip components peel back in a fierce yet weary grin. "And risk missing the sparklings?" he retorts, striding over rust coloured soil towards the porch Dorothy stood on.
His field pulses warmth upon seeing his friend, soaking in her calming company. “It is good to see you Dorothy” A gruff hum rumbles his massive frame, relaxing further.
"so optimus, has you playing babysitter today?" She asked with a smirk, trying to ruffle his plating. A scoffing snort bellows from Megatron's vents at the insinuation of playing nursemaid.
Twitch's laughter makes Megatron look up to watch as she flies around with Mo before their eyes and optics land on the ex-warlord. "Hi Mr Megatron!" A collection of voices call out, Dot laughs at her kids. "Believe it or not they seem to enjoy having you around, think they like you better than OP '' she states smugly. A rare soft chuckle rumbles from Megatron's frame. "Well if the Prime cannot appease youthful tastes, it seems his title means less than once assumed," he replies loftily, it earns him a small slap to his plating from Dorothy.
Beside him, her own amusement rings sweet as Terran continues with their Shenanigans. Megatron's optics glint fondly. He didn't know how to voice his appreciation to the soldier turned ranger, she trusted him so willingly with her family and he would forever be thankful for that.
Dot walks towards her work vehicle. "You gonna be alright dealing with all of them by yourself?. Alex shouldn't be far away" she replies while getting into the driver's seat and ready to head off to work.
"Twitch Not fair only you and Nightshade can fly!" Hashtag calls out.

"Too bad bozo should have picked a better alt mode instead of a Ghost Van '' Twitch calls back as she takes off with their basketball before throwing in through the hoop.
This handful of newsparks posed no threat whatsoever, and he'd make sure they were protected while she was away.
"Worry not, I shall keep them entertained and out of trouble until your return" he rumbles, His massive frame shifts casually aside as Dot's vehicle rumbles past, optics following until taillights fade into rural tree line. Massive peds crunch soil as Megatron straightens, surveying once more.
It's only once the kids mother has left do they go about doing their own things.
Nightshade and Hashtag with little projects together. “Can you give me a tutorial on renovating?” Nightshade ask Hashtag as the two work away
Jawbreaker finds himself sitting beside Megatron with Mo sitting in his lap. “But I never thought you had a grounded alt” Jawbreaker states while watching the ex Decepticon. “Much has changed since my time on cybertron and even while here on earth.” He starts. “I was once a miner, my Alt was that of a Mining Drill, it's only as of recently I've taken an alt mode of a flying type” he replies, a sad smile on his lips as he remembers. He's broken out of his memory when Twitch flies back in a panic.
"There is someone on the property!, they didn't see me but i didn't stick around to get seen" She states and it makes all the young ones tense up.
"You don't think it's GHOST again?"
"It could be the neighbour!" Robbie states trying to calm everyone.
"Show me," he rumbles curtly to Twitch, striding toward the perimeter of the woodlands. His engine rumbles a warning growl. "Remain here. Stay out of sight, Little bird stay in drone mode in case it is GHOST."  The young terrans all retreat back into the barn watching. The wind whispers against his armour as he and Twitch move through the woods, Twitch stays close to Megatron's side hovering as they slowly scan the area.
A loud whistle leaves a human as they move throughout the woodlands. "Bluey!" They call out while looking through the woods. "Blue! Come on!" They call before their eyes catch movements, they huff to themself moving closer hoping to find their dog.
As they turn down another track they freeze when Scarlet optics linger on them, their body goes into fight or flight mode but instead of either they sand frozen to the spot hoping they hadn't been seen. Megatron freezes as well, optics narrowing to analyse the stranger before him. No weapon was drawn, but their presence alone was alarming. A low menacing growl rumbles leaves his intake, Twitch hovers over his shoulder plate quick to hide behind his back as she transformers, ember optics watching the human from behind Megatron as she clings to the large Mech.
"Explain your business here, human," he demands. "You trespass" Twitch's faint glow flickers beside him, awaiting the answer that could mean swift action, depending on what the human said would decide how quickly she would fly back to the barn.
They fall to the ground moving backwards quickly. "BLUE!!" They shout loudly. The sound of heavy footsteps crunching against branches, leaf litter and rocks follow before a large cybernetic Dog stands in front of the human growling at Megatron. Its ears are pinned back as it barks loudly at the large Mech, guarding their human.
Twitch's optics widen in shock. “No way you have a Robodog!” she squeals out in delight only for Megatron to make sure she stays behind him.
Megatron's optics narrow as he watches the Metal dog and vice versa. Bright blue optics watch his every move, the creature looked like a merge of cybertronian tech yet at the same time his scans said it was something different.
"Explain," he rumbles again, optics narrowing upon the trespassers. Loyalty to one's charge he respected, if nothing else. But his main concern was his charges and their safety. More footfall alerts Megatron to one of the children running towards them. Robbie pants as he catches up to Megatron, his eyes going wide when he sees his neighbour. “DON'T BLAST OUT NEIGHBOUR!" He yells loudly.

"You know them?" he asked Robbie who nodded. "Yea they leave across the woods, their another one of my Parents friend's!" He states only to flinch as the cyberdog sniffs him. its ears perk up and whines at the young man waiting for a pat. "Robbie?" The other human calls out in shock.
“Um Hey!, sorry about him” Robbie says sheepishly while patting the dog's face. "Um... when did you get a robot dog?" He asked his neighbour, they let out a groan as they continued laying on the ground. Crimson optics scan the pair, A rumbling purr vibrates his massive chassis, posture shifting from confrontational to watchful. "You seem acquainted. Explain yourselves further - why have these 'neighbours' not been introduced before now?" He asked Robbie.
The young man turns back to Megatron. "Because the terrans are hiding from GHOST, Megatron," He states, but the shock of reality finally kicks in after he says those words. "We are all gonna be in deep shit when mom gets home," he says in a panic. Twitch perks up. "Ohhhhh, Robbie said a bad word! I'm telling mom!!" She shouts while flying out from behind Megatron's shoulder.
"Troubles abound it seems," he finally replies, his tone modulated into something approaching conciliatory. "Explanations are due. But not here, it isn't safe out here." Crimson optics scan the forest shadows.
That's how they end up sitting in the Kitchen of the Malto's house with both Robbie and Mo, along with the Terrans watching them from windows and Megatron sitting on the ground beside the house watching. They slowly sip on their drink as the kids look at them with worry. "You're not going to tell anyone about the bots right?" Mo asked.
"What!, no, no! That would put Blue in more danger, I'm out here hiding him for the Government" they state. It makes all the terrans relax before questions fly about themself and their cyberdog.
Megatron scans Blue appraisingly where the cyber-hound lies on the Doorstep near his Pede. He had never seen anything like this creature. He had his run in with turbofoxs and other creatures like on cybertron, but this one almost reminded him of Ravage in how protective they were of their human.
A sigh vents softly from Megatron's frame, he reaches out slowly running a servos over the dog's back which makes the mutt huff, before it rolls over in delight, soft chafing noises leave them.
It's only when Alex returns that he realises something is up. "Kids... what's going on?" He asked his children. The older of the collect waves. "Um Hey Alex, you might wanna sit down" they call out to him. He nearly drops his shopping bags when he sees the Metallic Dog.

Twisters HC Part 2, electric boogaloo
ft. my attempts to make a coherent timeline based almost entirely on vibes
Kate and Tyler take an excruciatingly long time to get together. If the movie is set is June (which is what I'm going with based on when tornado season starts and the fact that it makes the most sense for the movie to start a little after the beginning of tornado season), they dance around each other until August after the last chase of the season.
However, by the end of the first week, the Wranglers are sick of their shit. Boone dreams of locking them in a closet together. Javi and Lily actively scheme to make them room together. Dani sticks a post-it note to Tyler's back that says "kiss me" and shoves him at Kate. Dexter intentionally sets their sleeping bags together every time they chase overnight. Nothing works until Kate finally just walks up to him after the last chase of the season and asks if he plans on kissing her, and Tyler responds by dipping her in the sappiest Hallmark kiss you can imagine. No one is sure whether to cheer or groan, because from here on out they will be even more insufferable.
Two weeks after she starts dating Tyler, Kate wakes Javi up in the middle of the night sobbing about how she's going to get him killed just like she got Jeb killed. Javi just silently calls her mom and hands her the phone. Cathy provides expert advice, and Javi provides hesitant head pats because what do you say to that?
Javi and Kate fight like siblings. The first time Javi steals Kate skittles and she full on tackles him, it surprised the Wranglers. The third time, no one even looked up. The seventh time, Tyler just called Cathy and put her on speaker.
Javi's mom left when he was a toddler, and his father traveled a lot for work. When Javi and his dad moved to Sapulpa, they became the Carter's closest neighbors. Rural neighbors, which means there's about a mile of the Carter's farmland in between their houses, but Javi and Kate met when Kathy dragged her over there to deliver a welcome pie.
Because Javi's dad traveled so much, Javi spent a ton of time over at Kate's house, to the point where Kate started calling the guest room, "Javi's room".
Javi's dad died unexpectedly a few weeks after Javi's 18th birthday. Cathy offered to let Javi move in with them, at least until he graduated high school, but Javi insisted on staying at his house, and his room at Kate's house went back to being the guest room. Of course, it didn't stay empty; there was almost always at least one Tornado Tamer that needed a place to crash and now, five years later, Cathy finds herself with a new group of kids (because they're all kids to her) crashing in her guest room and raiding her fridge.
Kate left town a few weeks after the funerals finished. She didn't go straight to New York but instead worked her way up the East Coast for about two years before she landed her meteorology job in New York 3 years before the start of the movie.
Javi drifted aimlessly for about six months before he served four years of active duty in (insert whatever military branch is the most likely to do whatever it was Javi was doing because I don't know how the military works) and is now an IRR for the next four years (I think this is how it works?). He got off active duty about six months before the events of the movie (based on his hair has somewhat grown out of military regulations at the start of the movie, but he still gives off military vibes).
Tyler and his team have been chasing unofficially for about six years, but it wasn't their full-time job until about two years ago, shortly after they brought Lily and her drone on-board.
They don't livestream every chase. Instead, they film for the majority of tornado season and try to get enough footage to be able to release weekly videos through the off-season, in addition to making more educational-type videos about tornadoes and what to do if one is coming for you, as well as showing behind the scenes kind of stuff, like what modifications they've made to the truck and stuff like that. The Wrangler's family dynamic is as much a draw for their audience as the tornadoes are and they know it.
Boone has absolutely stuck a Lego up his nose on a dare, and Dexter yelled at him the whole way to the ER when it got stuck.
Dexter thinks he's the only sane person on the team, but in reality, he gives off serious mad scientist energy when he gets going. He also thinks he's the Team Dad, but it's really Tyler. Dexter is the fun childless uncle that bought you toys your parents hated at Christmas and let you drive the ATV before you were old enough to.

𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝕸𝖎𝖓𝖎𝖘𝖙𝖗𝖞 𝕺𝖓 𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝕸𝖔𝖚𝖓𝖙𝖆𝖎𝖓, 𝕻𝖆𝖘𝖙 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝕽𝖎𝖉𝖌𝖊 𝖁𝖎𝖑𝖑𝖆𝖌𝖊
Summary: After a multitude of wrong doings at your catholic church, you and four other nuns are sent on a mysterious transfer to a ministry nobody dares speak of. On behalf of the Count Copia, you are welcomed after a suspenseful journey. Author Note: This is the first chapter to my new series based on some of my favorite movies like Dracula, The Phantom Of The Opera and Labyrinth. You might even get some references to some others as well as a few ghost lyrics. This is going to be a build up to smut, and this will be a romance one obviously but beware this is major corruption kink coming your way. If you need some help, the ghoul in this chapter is Aether, and half of this is quite literally the exact script of Dracula. You can even look it up and see! Please enjoy, all feedback in my inbox is greatly appreciated.
Chapter one of my new series, “𝕽𝖔𝖘𝖊 𝕲𝖆𝖗𝖉𝖊𝖓 𝕱𝖚𝖓𝖊𝖗𝖆𝖑 𝕺𝖋 𝕾𝖔𝖗𝖊𝖘”
In a Coach in the Carpathian Mountains, a young woman reads to four passengers from a travel brochure.
“Among the rugged peaks that frown down on the Borgo Pass are found crumbling castles of a bygone age.” The woman is knocked from her seat by a bump in the dirt rural road.
“I say, driver, a bit slower!” Another woman says, her black veil crooked as she shakes in the mobile.
“No, no! We must reach the mountain before sundown!” The driver says, a crack in his voice as the silent erie sound of the forest starts to swallow all sounds.
‘And why, pray?” One of the female passengers asks, closing the bible in her lap.
“When the sun sets the demons start evoking the mountain side like raging wolves and hyenas, desperate for any vulnerable being to feast upon!” The driver replies as they are enveloped in a cloud of fog, the steep road getting more bumpy.
You held tight onto the rosary in your hands, a charm of Jesus Christ on the cross between your palms as you listen to the man speak.
As the vehicle stops in the center of the small village on the ridge, the passengers eagerly step out of the transport and into the rich moist soil. This is a small village of three homes and one or two inns, mainly farmland and water sources as it fits in a small acre.
A woman from the nearest inn steps out of the entrance as chickens follow, her hair is in a messy bun and there is soot smudged across her face and clothes with a few patches holes in her dress and apron.
“Oh dear, let me help with your luggage sisters.” She says, wiping her hands on her sides to rid of the grim.
“Oh do not worry madam, we are to arrive up top the mountain by tonight.” you say as she grabs a leathery bag.
“Tonight? But the sun is already half set? The gate keeper, he is afraid. Good fellow, he is. Wants me to ask if you can wait to go on after sunrise.” She says as she sets the luggage back into the trunk.
“Im dearly sorry but im afraid we have specific orders from our adviser to be there by sundown, and I fear we are already late.” You reply, hands still clasped together.
Was what the driver said true? Why would it? Perhaps he was only trying to scare the group of young women.
“And who needs you on the mountain? Who sent you faithful young holy women to the dark abbey?” The innkeeper says in disbelief, she studies the very christian and catholic constant theme on the luggage and clothes.
“Count Copia, I assure you, we are here on holy deeds.” You say, willingly ignoring the description of the abbey, surely it was not truly an unholy place, it was an abbey after all.
‘Count Copia? And to the ministry?” She hides her hands in her apron pockets with her brows knitting.
“Yes.” You nod slowly, unsure of what she means, is he not the holy man they were sent to serve?
“No, you mustn't go there. We people of the mountains believe at the castle there are devils. Count and his ghouls!  They take the form of wolves and bats, goats and succubi. They leave their coffins at night, and they feed on the blood of the living.” She says, placing her hands on your shoulders and eagerly rushing you inside, “Look at the sun! Its already gone, come we must go indoors.”
“But thats all superstition. Why I…I cant understand why…” You try to reason as the door is slammed shut after the other nuns enter.
“But wait, I mean, just a minute. What im trying to say is that im not afraid. I've explained to the driver that its a matter of holiness and god filled right, We've explained it and we must arrive soon.” You say as she pokes at the fire, letting out a cough into her hand.
“If you must go then take this for your mothers sake,” the innkeeper hands you a small vile of blood, “This will protect you..”
‘W-what is it?” You ask, the other sisters surrounding you in curiosity.
“The blood of christ!” She says, eyes wide with fear.
For a moment you feel the need to call help for the woman, she must be a poor paranoid soul. And there is no way she of all people would have the blood of christ.
The sisters gather back into the small mobile and quickly ride upon the foggy dark mountain as the red piercing sun drowns in the horizon.
When the car stops in the pitch black court yard, the car hurriedly drives away.
“Wait! Driver! Our luggage!”
The groups attention is brought back to the stone path to the large entrance doors as it is lined with lit candles that come of flame. The dancing red light illuminates them to follow, you take the lead, as you seem to be the least terrified.
You push open the large black doors and step into the Obsidian floor of the main castle. Its dark just like outside and candles suddenly egnite.
The nuns look around the room, taking in the shadowed paintings, murals, and stained glass.
A footstep spooks you as the sound comes from a taller man at the top of the main stair case.
“G-Good evening.” You bow your head slightly in respect as you can only make out his shape.
“I am…Count Copia..” He says, thick italian accent in his voice as he begins stepping down the long stairs.
“Its very good to see you. I don't know what happened to the driver and our luggage and…well…with all this..I thought I was in the wrong place.” You say, hoping to not sound rude, but there wasn't a cross in sight and the stained glass showed depictions of devilish things instead of virgin mary and jesus.
“I bid you welcome.” The count says,
Outside the large windows, there the howl of a wolf.
“Listen to them…children of the night. What music they make!” He smiles hauntingly.
The older man starts walking off down a corridor lined with paintings and candles. The hall is painted dark red with black trim. One candle stick is consumed with spider webs, it catches your attention as you follow.
“A spider spinning his web for the unwary fly. The blood…is the life, Ms…” He invited you to say your name.
“Ah of course, My name is Sister _, from the western Catholic church of god.” You say with another pleasing bow.
The man hums, his eyes darkening, “Im sure you will find this part of the ministry more inviting.” He says as he opens the doors to a larger room, it has five beds, dressers, nightstands and even an chest at the foot of every bed. Theres two couches on either side of a coffee table in the center of the room, accompanied with a vase of dead roses, a fire place, and two other chairs of black leather. What is most questionable is why the room is a circle, not one corner.
‘Oh rather! Its quite different from outside. Oh, and the fire! Its so cheerful.” You say with a smile.
“I took the liberty of having your luggage brought up. Allow me.” He says as he takes the groups wool capes, he hangs them on a coat rack.
‘Oh yes, thank you.” One of the sisters says as she sits on the neatly made bed.
The room is painted a deep purple, black trims and wall designs. The curtains over the large windows were a pitch black, and the beds were of black steel and neatly covered with purple silk sheets and purple cotton. The room was lit with candles and a chandelier.
You pick up the letter on the bed, but you accidentally cut your finger on the sharp note card.
As a droplet of blood rolls down your finger, the man quickly turns away.
“Oh dear im sorry, its just a paper cut, I didn't know you were squeamish.” You apologize as you grab a napkin cloth and hold it.
“The infirmary is on the main hall to the left, I hope you shall never need it.” He says as he holds his hands behind his back.
“Thank you,” You smile.
‘I will have a ghoul take you there, and get a bandage.” He says with a large swallow.
You tilt your head, “ghoul?” You ask, what is with this odd abbey?
Suddenly, out of the darkness of the room, a masked entity approaches you. His silvery devil mask shines in the candle light, through the slit shines his piercing white eyes, pupils so thin and slit like a snake your unsure if they're even there or if its the shadows playing tricks on you. Hes in a nice suit attire, a skull tie and button up pants. His dark hair is slightly wavy and is cut short at his ear and neck, he has a calming presence and you notice his ears are long and pointed. You take in the fact that this man was not infant human, but rather a demon.
So the innkeeper was correct? About unholy ghosts here?
He leads you to the infirmary, the walk there is silent as you continue to study his form. He has a spaded tail, and his hands are a pale muted purple and his veins are visible in a lighter white color. The ghoul had long sharp claws too, as well as a thicker build.
He opened the door to the infirmary, he lets you sit down as he gathers materials to address the minor cut.
As he comes back, he kneels in front of you and takes your hand. The pads of his fingers are rough but smooth, hes very gentle and has a calming affect to him.
You swallow, your afraid to speak.
The ghoul parts his lips, like hes about to speak but doesnt know what to say, “Your heart is racing.” he says, deep voice like a deep cave filled with echos and shadows. Its warm and heart filled, he truly means no harm.
Your hands tremble as you shiver, “w-what?”
‘Ah uh…sorry…I meant that your frightened and there is no need too be.” He quickly blurts out, like he hasn't talked to a stranger in years.,
“This is not what i was expecting..” You say as you start to ease up.
“Nobody does, don't worry, you are safe.” He says as he cleans the wound.
“This…is not a place of god is it..?” You finally ask as he lets go to cut a piece of gauze to use.
“No. It is not.” He looks into your eyes.
You had the feeling that when your church said they were moving you, that it wasn't because you were the best sister of god there. You had started asking to many questions and you always knew that when they transferred people it was never for the better but to rather rid of the so called delinquents that questioned god. In a way you knew you would be thrown out, but not like this and to the wolves.
“Im sorry…I just…I don't want to die..” you start to tear up, ‘I don't want to burn for eternity.”
The ghoul quickly looks up at you, ‘no no no don't worry,” He chuckles, “Your not going to die here and you wont burn for eternity, I doubt god even knows you exist.”
Your taken aback some, “But don't you eat people? Kill us for blood? Sacrifices and such?”
“Your demonology books are far outdated…” He says as he wraps your finger.
“So….you ghouls are…kind?” You say, standing up.
He nods, “yes, everyone here is.”
You look down at your feet, “I apologize, I feel I need to introduce myself and start over.”
The ghoul stretches his hand out, “You may call me Nameless Ghoul.”
You take his hand, “Im Sister _, I hope we can be friends.”

Excerpt from this story from Truthout:
Rural La Paz County, Arizona, positioned on the Colorado River across from California, is at the center of a growing fight over water in the American Southwest. At the heart of the battle is a question: Should water be treated as a human right, to be allocated by governments with the priority of sustaining life? Or is it a commodity to be bought, sold and invested in for the greatest profits?
As the West suffers its worst megadrought in 1,200 years, investors have increasingly eyed water as a valuable asset and a resource to be exploited. For years, investment firms have bought up farmland throughout the Southwest, drilling to new depths for their water-hungry crops and causing nearby wells to run dry. Now, new players have entered the scene: “Water management companies” are purchasing up thousands of acres of farmland, with the intention of selling the water rights at a profit to cities and suburbs elsewhere in the state. Some argue that treating water as a commodity can efficiently get it where it is needed most. But others fear that water markets open the door to profiteering and hoarding, leaving poorer communities in the dust.
In 2013 and 2014, GSC Farm, a subsidiary of a water management company called Greenstone Resource Partners, which is backed by MassMutual, bought nearly 500 acres of farmland in Cibola, a tiny town in Arizona’s La Paz County, for just under $10 million. The farmland comes with the rights to more than 2,000 acre-feet of Colorado River water a year. (An acre-foot is the amount of water it takes to cover one acre with one foot of water.) Then in 2018, Greenstone sold the water rights, in perpetuity, to Queen Creek, a rapidly growing suburb of Phoenix nearly 200 miles away, for $24 million.
The transfer marked the first time a water management company sold Colorado River water rights. La Paz and two other counties sued to block the transfer, arguing that the Bureau of Reclamation, the federal agency that oversees water resource management, had conducted an insufficient environmental review before signing off. The counties’ request for a preliminary injunction was denied in April 2023 by a federal judge, and three months later the water began flowing down the Central Arizona Project, a 336-mile canal. Then, the judge seemingly backtracked in February 2024, ordering a more thorough environmental review.
“In the meantime, they’re still allowing for the water to flow, which we argued should have been stopped completely until the complete environmental studies have been done,” Holly Irwin, a La Paz County supervisor, told Truthout. “It’s really frustrating, not only for myself, but for the other leaders and elected officials in what we refer to as the river communities.”
The ultimate results of the lawsuit could affect how easily water management companies are able to transfer river water rights for profit in the future.
“I’ve had people already contacting me, asking, ‘Hey, look, I’m looking to buy this piece of property. It’s got water rights. Can it be transferred off the Colorado River?’” said Irwin. “Which is what we knew was going to happen. They just opened up Pandora’s box.”
Companies like Greenstone are betting that the price of water will increase. Western states generally allocate water through a “prior appropriation” policy of “first in time, first in right.” In times of shortage, those with the most senior water claims — often farmers and ranchers whose ancestors claimed Native land — are allotted their full share of water first. Now, companies like Greenstone are lining up to buy those increasingly valuable water rights.
The Colorado River provides drinking water to 40 million people across seven U.S. states, two Mexican states, and multiple tribal lands. Since 1922, its water has been allocated among the states through a framework created by the Colorado River Compact. But river volume has decreased 20 percent since the beginning of the century, leading to tense renegotiations, with the three “lower basin” states — California, Arizona and Nevada — agreeing to reduce their water shares.
Compared to Colorado River water, groundwater tends to be less regulated. Major investment banks have spent hundreds of millions buying up farms with claims to the groundwater beneath them — part of a larger movement by investors into physical assets like lumber, buildings and infrastructure.
Once pumped, groundwater aquifers in warm, dry places can take thousands of years to replenish. In an effort to conserve water basins, Arizona passed the 1980 Groundwater Management Act, heavily restricting groundwater pumping in several urban “active-management areas” (AMAs), including the Phoenix and Tucson areas. It also mandated that developers obtain a state Certificate of Assured Water Supply, demonstrating their new projects have enough water for 100 years. The law is credited as a success for protecting water levels in urban areas. But its lack of restrictions on groundwater removal from rural basins has become a concern as the state population swells and rural wells run dry.

People who live in population centers often don't realize just how much the urban/suburban lightscape has robbed them of.
Not just the stars and galaxies you should be able to see with the naked eye -- though that is also something that's almost impossible to see near cities due to light pollution -- but also the absolutely magical experience of seeing fireflies the way they should be seen. The way they can only exist away from man-made light sources.
Coming back from a historic small-town theatre I frequent, I have the choice between taking the interstate or the rural back roads. I almost always choose the latter, so earlier this evening I was driving out in the country for about 15 miles. That region is primarily farmland with a handful of scattered residences. It was around dusk, and -- friends, it was like the earth was covered in glitter. In the fallow fields and pastures, tens of thousands of fireflies sparkling, just this universal, unbroken twinkling everywhere you looked. The kind of light show that doesn't even look real because we're used to seeing just a few fireflies at a time, if we're lucky enough to have a large backyard or a patch of woods nearby. Or maybe you don't get to see fireflies at all because you're in a city and there's nowhere for them to lay eggs (in undisturbed fallen leaves, mostly), so you've only seen them in videos. But the fireflies were the only lights on this land before we put up our electric flood lights and streetlamps, and in these broad swaths of unlighted field and self-mulching fencerows, they're still thriving.
I watched this display in awe as I drove, slowing down at times to admire a particularly flashy area. And then I'd drive past a house with a billion watts of exterior security lighting, and... nothing. Not a glimmer in those yards. Maybe one lonesome flicker in the ditch by the road, a firefly that couldn't find the party or didn't make it to the darker areas for some reason. It's alone because there's no reason for fireflies to come to bright places; they light up to find mates, and they're obscured and blinded by the man-made lights.
The closer I got to my suburban home, the fewer fireflies there were along the road. When I came to the high school with its massive day-bright stadium lights that stay on all night (and which fill me with rage fully as incandescent for so many reasons), I didn't spot a single firefly for a quarter mile in either direction. Kids growing up in the neighborhoods around that school will never have the chance to watch fireflies in their own yards, or learn to scoop them gently from underneath to catch them without harming them and then let them crawl to the tips of their fingers to fly away again. When they grow up, they won't have any emotional association with fireflies that would inspire them to leave a few leaf piles along the fence in autumn, or to turn out the exterior lights at dusk and let the fireflies do their thing.
It saddens me that many (probably the majority of) people living in this era aren't getting to see how beautiful nature is when we just leave it alone. Instead of enjoying its natural state, we're spraying poisons on our lawns, and replacing native species with non-native ones because the yard looks more uniform that way, and throwing bagged leaves in landfills instead of letting them break down naturally and provide vital habitat for small animals and insects, and installing so many landscaping and security lights around our residences that you could stand in the yard and read by them in the middle of the night. Fireflies are actually threatened in some areas where they used to be common because of all these things.
If you live in a city or a lighted suburban area, I'd encourage you to try to get out to the country at least once and experience fireflies in force in their natural habitat. And if you're in an area where fireflies are native and you are in a position to, maybe leave a little pile of wet leaves for them in a corner of the yard. Turn out the lights in summer. Refrain from spraying pesticides on your grass.
Let the little guys light up the world for another generation.

“I’m not okay! I will never be okay!”
The outburst is sudden. Explosive. Like the kid’s been holding it in for far too long. Alicia has known this was coming — saw it in the tension in the boy’s shoulders, in the redness of his eyes, in the way he never smiled and never cried and was always terse around her — and yet. And yet. She is not prepared for it.
“You — you don’t get it! You’re strong, and you’re tough, and I’m — I’m not, I’m just not, okay?!” His voice cracks, but the floodgates are open now. Alicia doesn’t think he can stop, even if he wants to. “You’re fine, ‘cause you’re you, and you’re always fine! I can’t — I can’t do that, okay?!”
He glares at her, and oh, he looks just like Maddie. When their momma died, Alicia needed to be strong enough for the both of them, strong enough to carry them through, and Maddie, she cried and cried, but she got angry, and she glared so hard, too hard and too old and it broke Alicia’s heart to see it. Maddie bellowed — Don’t you care?! — and Alicia couldn’t say anything because of course she cared but she had to be strong and she had to be tough and she had to keep going and couldn’t let it get to her and Maddie screamed something fierce, screamed so loud and so long it was amazing her tiny body didn’t give out, she was so small —
Just like her little boy.
He’s so small.

Alicia needs to find him.
He doesn’t know these woods — probably doesn’t know any woods, and that bit of scrub Amity Park calls conservation doesn’t count. This isn’t some patch of green in the middle of a city where the most you’ll see is a stray cat. This is rural. This is wilderness and farmland, where the nearest anything is two miles away.
And this is nighttime. No local would dare go out at night. Alicia more than anyone knows why. Her city slicker fool of a nephew doesn’t stand a chance out there. And like hell she’s gonna just stand by and wait for it to happen. She ain’t giving up the only family she has left to the woods without a fight.
But she’ll be damned if she doesn’t go out there prepared.
*~*~*
“Danny!”
Alicia knows it’s foolish to call out his name like that. She knows it might not be Danny that answers.
But she’s at a loss.
His tracks should have been easy to follow — and they were, for a time. Danny may be smart, but he’s a city kid. He never learned how to hide his tracks the way Alicia and Maddie had growing up in the backwoods of Arkansas. Never learned to pass through these woods without a sign, like the ghosts in the stories Alicia’s momma liked to tell her and Maddie before she died. Never learned to navigate any woods, Alicia reckons, without help from his mom.
But his tracks disappear.
They stop abruptly, in a small clearing, not too far from the fairy circle she hasn’t had the chance to warn him about because he’s hardly ventured off the farm, let alone this far into the woods and —
She takes a breath, and she realizes she’d been holding it for the past minute. Calm down, Alicia. Panicking here won’t do anything but make her lose him for good. And she can’t have that. She won’t have that. Not again.
She takes another breath, steadying herself, and scans her flashlight over the tracks she can see.
Danny had broken through several branches and a thicket of thorns to get here — then fallen to the ground. Probably tripped on one of the roots that arched just above the dirt, hard to see those in the moonlight. She winces in sympathy — a fall like that would leave a mark.
But even so, he had gotten back up again. She sees it clearly in the footprints that follow the fall — stumbling at first, but they grow stronger as they push on into the clearing. The final tracks he left are the clearest — deep footprints facing the other side, the faded treads of his sneakers’ soles pressed firmly into the soil. It’s like he had jumped into the air.
But there’s no sign of where he landed. No hint of where gravity could have pulled him back down to Earth.
Like the moment his feet left the ground, he had disappeared.
Just like —
No.
She wouldn’t think it.
Not here, out in the wilderness at night, where anything could breathe life into those very thoughts.
Not now, when the only family she has left is all alone out here.
But how is she supposed to find him?
Alicia stands up straight, grimacing in frustration at the pop of her back. She’s getting old. Too old to be out at night searching for her fool of a nephew. Not that she’s any wiser, when she’s the one who drove him away.
She takes a deep breath to call Danny’s name again — then chokes on her voice as a wail brutally murders the silence of the night.
The wail — she can’t call it anything else, the way its cries linger in the air — howls through the night, making the hairs rise on the back of her neck and setting her teeth on edge. It echoes over itself, multiplying into a cacophony of moans and keens and shrieks — voices of the damned, screaming in agony and grief.
And before she can think, she finds herself sprinting towards the ghastly sound, gritting her teeth as it grates at her ears and pierces her soul. But she can’t give up, can’t slow down, can’t — can’t think as the wail fills her head and pounds against the inside of her skull —
Only one thought breaks through the cacophony, tolling like a funeral bell, pushing her to move faster, to get there before she’s lost him forever.
Not again.
Not again.
Not again.
*~*~*
“Danny, I’m so sorry.”
It’s all Alicia can say; but it isn’t enough, and they both know it. She’s losing him, she can feel it — feel the gulf between them stretching further, even when she steps forward, even as she wraps her arms around him, engulfing him in a careful hug — as if holding him too tight would shatter him; as if holding him too loose would let him slip away.
Foolish.
She isn’t much of a hugger, but even she can feel that this hug is awkward and wrong — in the way his muscles tense when she gently pats him on the back, the way she towers over him and holds him in place, the way he holds himself like a wall of ice and doesn’t hug her back.
She finally lets go, and he steps back, away from her, glaring at the floor, shoulders risen to his ears.
Then his eyes snap to hers, and they are icy blue like his fathers, and deadly sharp like his mother’s — but the fire in them is cold, and it chills her to the bone. His voice matches his eyes.
“I don’t need your pity.”
And before Alicia can do anything, he brushes past her, and he storms out the door, into the night. Into the wilderness.
He doesn’t look back as he slams the door shut.
*~*~*
By the time she finds him, the wail has long since petered out, leaving a deathly silence in its wake. She spots him facing away from her, kneeling at the edge of the lake just northwest of her property, the moonlight catching on the edges of his figure but leaving the rest in shadow.
She wants to run to him, to look him over, make sure he’s okay, to bring him back inside. But that’s not what he needs. So instead, she surveys the area, and she approaches slowly, making her footsteps loud in the unnatural silence.
Alicia knows this part of the lake — has spent a good amount of time sitting where Danny kneels, thinking or just taking in the world. There’s always something a little bit different every time she comes this way — some new growth in the plant life, or some new animal tracks after the rain, or even a tree fallen in the wake of a storm. A couple storms have passed since she last came here.
Nothing natural could have changed the landscape to be what it is now.
Multiple trees have been torn from the ground, violently uprooted and radiating outwards from the lake. Some of them almost look like they’ve been hit by gunfire — large chunks of them missing, splintered wood clawing outwards from the gaping wounds. Greenish smoke rises from the exposed wood.
The same smoke curls from Danny’s fists at his sides.
Carefully avoiding the craters and downed trees, Alicia makes her way to the edge of the lake. Not too close to Danny — she doesn’t want to spook him — but not too far, either. She wants him to know that she’s there, that she’s there for him, for as long as he needs it.
She lowers herself to the ground with a huff.
And she sits with him, in the stillness of the night.
Out of the corner of her eye, she watches as the smoke dissipates from Danny’s hands; as his fists relax; as he slowly shifts from kneeling, to sitting, to holding his knees. She can’t help the small sigh that escapes her — the way he’s curled up, hugging himself, staring intently at the lake so he doesn’t have to look at her — it’s just like her son.
Just like Flynn.
She sighs again, deep and long. Then she speaks.
“You had a cousin, you know.”
Danny doesn’t respond. But she knows he’s listening.
“Flynn,” she continues. “He was my son.”
She pauses as memories wash over her. “He could name every fish in this lake — and he would, too, when given the chance. Tell you all about the peepers, too. Sometimes, I caught him just sitting and staring into the lake — right where you’re sitting now — just thinking, I guess. He was a smart kid.”
Alicia takes a breath, and can’t help the way it shudders.
“He’s gone now. And it was my fault.”
She swallows, and feels her throat click. “We had a fight — can’t remember what about, it was so long ago — but he ran out of the house. And I went after him, of course I did, but it was broad daylight — he should have been safe — and I didn’t get there fast enough.”
She can remember it like yesterday: the way the sunlight had shown as he ran, warming her skin against the gentle, cool breeze that ruffled the grass and the trees. She’d been glad it was nice out — meant neither of them would catch a cold when she could finally catch up to her fool of a son. She remembers her confusion when Flynn had stopped running — then her dread as the dark green of the forest in front of him had slowly warped to something brighter, swirling and glowing and radioactive and growing with each passing moment — then her panic as she had realized what it was.
“It was one of them ghost portals,” she tells Danny. “I’d never seen one before, but your momma, she’d told me all about them. And she’d told me what all came out of them, too. I ran as fast as I could, and I told Flynn to run; but something reached out and grabbed him. And by the time I got there, it was too late. The portal closed. And my boy was gone.”
She can’t help the shudder in her voice, in her chest as she breathes, in her arms as she tenses them to hold herself together. It’s been a long time since she’s talked about Flynn. Too long. But she can’t break over it. Not yet. Danny needs to know — she gets it.
“Losing Flynn like that — knowing he was right there, that if I’d been a bit faster, or if I’d just listened, he’d still be here — it does something to you. My no good ex-husband, he didn’t get it. I’d be a fool to say he didn’t grieve, in the end — but he wasn’t there. He didn’t see. He didn’t understand.”
She watches from the corner of her eye as Danny stiffens.
“I hunted these woods for anything to get my son back,” she continues. “He just thought I was crazy — me spouting about ghosts and fae, like he knew anything about these woods. It ruined our marriage. And I don’t regret that; but it was a bad time. I had nightmares every night about losing him; and every day I did everything I could to find him. Your parents came out here, too, with all their fancy equipment. Didn’t find a thing. And everything I found out in the woods — none of it helped.”
She sighs and ignores the way her breath shakes.
“I never found Flynn, or the thing that took him. It was my fault. And by now, my son is probably dead.”
Danny’s head lowers into his knees as Alicia speaks. She doesn’t expect him to say anything once she’s run out of words. But a moment later, his voice, hoarse and quiet, echoes out from him.
“How do you do it? Keep going?”
Alicia huffs gently. “One step at a time, I suppose. The world keeps going. No matter how much it feels like it should all stop.” She rubs her face, and she’s only a little surprised to find it damp. “It’s hard, with him gone, knowing it’s my fault. There are times the guilt eats away at you.”
“Does it ever go away?” Danny squeezes his legs to his chest. His voice is small. He’s just a child.
Alicia takes a deep, shuddering breath, then lets it go. “No, Danny. It doesn’t.”
She’s not going to lie to Danny — he deserves better than that.
“Losing someone like that? It never goes away.” She pauses. “It gets easier — or maybe you get used to it. Hell if I know. But it never goes away.”
“Then what’s the point?” Danny sounds… angry. Frustrated. Desperate. He’s on the brink of tears, and he looks tired, so so tired, exhausted even — but it reminds Alicia of… something. Maddie? Maybe Flynn? And she chuckles ruefully.
“See, that’s the hard part. Is there any point to death? To losing someone and knowing it’s your fault?” She sighs. “Danny, I’ve had a long time to think. Ain’t much else to do around here.”
She takes a moment to gather her thoughts.
“You’re always gonna miss them — that won’t change. And they’ll always be a part of you — that won’t change, either. But the world keeps going, one step at a time. And that’s how you gotta take things. There’s work to be done. And there’s people you gotta keep going for. When Flynn was taken, it was your momma that kept me going. Then your sister and you.
“But out here, in the middle of nowhere, that don’t work forever. Here on the farm, you got structure, and you got hard work to keep things going. But mostly, you got solitude. And you got a lot of room for thinking.”
She pauses. “It took a while, but I think I learned how to keep going for myself. Not saying it’s easy — but anything worth doing takes hard work. And I’ll be there for you, as long as you want it, and as long as you need it.”
Alicia looks down properly at Danny then, from where she sits. His face is buried in his knees, and he’s gripping his legs like he’ll fall apart if he lets go. His whole frame trembles with tension.
He’s so small. And it breaks her heart to see him hurting like this.
Alicia puts her hand on Danny’s shoulder, and it nearly engulfs his upper arm. His head shoots up, and he stares at her with wide, glowing green eyes.
Then he starts to pull away from her, turning his head away and blinking his eyes.
“Hey.” Something in her tone makes him stop. She continues. “You don’t have to hide from me, Danny. You can let it out.” And so should I.
Danny searches her face for something — Alicia doesn’t know what. But after a moment, his face crumbles, and he gasps out a sob before launching himself into her arms. Alicia rocks back a bit with the force of it — then catches herself, and holds him tight, rocking him and rubbing circles in his back like she used to do with Flynn.
“I’m here, Danny. I’m here.”
She won’t tell him it’s okay — they both know it’s not.
Maybe they’ll never be okay.
But she’s there for him. And she’ll be there for him, for as long as he needs. Maybe forever, if Maddie was right about ghosts, if Danny is somehow ghostly.
“I’m here.”
She’s there for him when he lets go and leans against her in his exhaustion. She’s there for him when she keeps her arm around him, and they sit, and breathe, and stare out at the lake, under the stars, under the moonlight.
I’m here.

Missing Ontario
“Island Time” becomes less of a cheeky joke and more of a spiritual state of mind.
For the past couple years now Jethro and I have been using two weeks of summer to head out to Ontario and visit family. This was a new special development in my life, firstly because the 2022 trip coincided with my very first instance of Paid Time Off from a job; I had a mullet, I didn’t own a pair of formal shoes, and I felt like I was maybe finally “earning” adulthood. Secondly because I was going to meet Jethro’s extended family. For context, despite having known each other for a decade, I did not meet Jethro’s parents until one year prior. It’s an amount of personal privacy that I am both confounded by and envious of, and either way respect immensely.
The Ontario trip always feels like a bit of dream, but I would chalk most of that up to my lack of travel experience, even on the smaller scale of around my own country. So many things are so close to what I know and yet just slightly different. The buildings, the brands, even the flora seem like close approximations of what I would see in my day to day in BC. I think I know what variety of tree I’m looking at until I get a little closer and realize I have no clue. Like a dream that you believed to take place in your own house, only to wake up and realize you have no familiarity with the location your brain chose as a substitute. There seem to be some esoteric rules around the sale of liquor in Ontario, and despite having it explained to me multiple times I could not tell you for certain whether you are allowed to buy gin and beer at the same store, or what time in the evening you are now shit out of luck. Also why am I only allowed to by singles or cases? The half-sack eluded me.
There are three main stops on the trip: Topsy Farms on Amherst Island, cottage country just outside of Sydenham, and Toronto. And both trips where done in the same order as well, a kind of system shock shotgunning us right into rural farmland before heading to the more manicured wilderness of high-privacy cottage properties, all packed tightly together on the lake, and then back to bustle and urbanity in the city. It felt like a forced system reset before a 10 day long relaunching process, and an absolute joy to not see my phone at all for the first 3 to 5 days of the trip.
The whole of Amherst Island is beautiful and pastoral, with gravel roads and ivy trails clinging to old buildings. On the view from the ferry the landscape is dominated by multiple wind turbines, imposing giants that made me think of huge white pins being stuck into the map of the province; remember Here. We stay with Jethro’s godmother Leah, and we fall asleep to the sheep bleating in the distance, get up late in the morning for coffee, and then spend the rest of the day walking, swimming, and socializing with Leah and whoever else happens to stop by the farmhouse. “Island Time” becomes less of a cheeky joke and more of a spiritual state of mind. Sometimes when I find myself too wound up in my everyday life I try to access the bodily feeling of being back on the island - the wind of the bluffs cools my hot skin and dries my wet hair.
Tumblr media
Veggie dogs on offer at the bluffs kitchenette.
The slow living continues as we move to our next destination, which is Grandpa Greg and Grandma Carol’s dream eco-cottage nestled just between Birch Lake and Desert Lake.
A quick intermission:
It was at this point in writing this piece that a couple things occurred. Firstly, I spent quite a lot of time on google maps trying to find the lakes the house was on, including using google street-view to travel along Canoe Lake Road to try and get my bearings; a trip that makes me carsick more often than not in person, and also apparently virtually through the computer screen. I had to go lay down for a moment. The other thing was that in my map searching I did find that there is a “Steely Dan Island” on Canoe Lake. Imagine the rest of this piece being written with Steely Dan playing in the background.
Tumblr media
Rikki don’t lose that map pin.
Grandpa Greg is a green engineer who has designed a beautiful home with multiple eco friendly features — low flow and composting toilets, good airflow through the house, and the larder in the basement has an ambient temperature low enough to store perishables even in the summer. And keeps whiteclaws cool too, which was important to me. Most of this portion of the trip is spent, again, sleeping in, drinking, lounging, and socializing. But with a different feeling. You can be washing your coffee mug at the kitchen sink and look up to a family of kayakers in a space of water that up until that point you had imagined to be private property belonging entirely to the Allens. But my favourite piece of the house design is that every window is a picture frame, each looking out onto a carefully selected view of the property, framed by leaves and tree branches artfully encroaching into the view. Grandpa Greg told me during the first house tour that his direct inspiration was a trip on BC ferries, and the walls of the ship lined with large rectangular windows to capture natural landscapes as art. It was a different view of a BC Ferries ship than I had ever considered — I was (and still am) certain that every aspect of those particular experience are tailored to push my specific buttons. But the implementation of the picture windows at the cottage are effective — the kayakers are unexpected, but also impersonal; a painting where the subject could only have just appeared while you weren’t looking, and will likely be gone when you look again, off on their own business.
The time spent at the cottage is the driving reason for the excursion out to Ontario in the first place. 2022 was the year Jethro’s middle brother Fionn graduated high school, and then the youngest, Calum, in 2023. I was very much a guest on a trip specifically meant to circle wagons for the last available times before all three boys were off to their respective cities and busy with all the things young adults are. We played badminton, watched movies, and spent time in Sydenham eating poutine from the chip shop in front of the Foodland. And of course playing games.
Tumblr media
I have developed a reputation among the family for being a euchre spectator. I did not grow up with much gaming culture in my household, the extent would be Scatagories or Pictionary with extended family on a holiday visit. We favoured creative-focus left brain games, and I could not tell you who was the winner of any one of them. Often there was no winner. So suffice it to say I was a bit out of my depth with real number and strategy capital “C” card games. I struggle with quick small math in general and my main objective in a game is usually just to have something to do with my hands while we’re chatting.
The Allens have had the police called on them for fights over bridge games.
But the atmosphere is thrilling. There’s something about sharing the space with someone who cares very deeply about what they’re doing, however small and fleeting it may be. It feels electric, and you can’t help but laugh and cheer for a hard fought victory, or even share the frustration of a difficult loss. I was much better at the off-road croquet that we paired with gigantic blue gin and tonics.
Tumblr media
A croquet crime in progress.
It’s been hard saying goodbye at this point in the trip. We spend the majority of our time at Greg and Carol’s, and both times there’s been something final felt in the air, a moment when you realize that you’re watching your partner say goodbye to the children he remembers his younger brothers being. I hug everyone tight before we go, feeling less a stranger to them every time I experience the sadness of leaving.
And on to Toronto. And getting back to the city at this point feels right, forget a heartbreak by immersing yourself in the busyness. We stay with Jethro’s cousin Laurel and have between two and three days to visit museums, art galleries, and restaurants, often ending the nights with a glass of red wine on the porch with Laurel. Our most notable meal was in 2022 in the distillery district at El Catrin Destilleria, where Jethro and I got the drunkest we have ever been at a restaurant off of the largest and best spicy margaritas we’ve ever had. The food was amazing as well of course, I recommend the Lime Carlota icebox for dessert, but share it with a friend because it is massive.
Talking about experiencing Toronto is the part of the trip I tend to trust my perception the least in, partly because we’ve spent the least amount of time there, and also because I’m starting to feel like maybe the culture in any city is going to be more favorable than my current thoughts on Vancouver. The buildings are older, the amenities are closer together, and I watched a family walking down the street towards a public pool with the children already in their bathing suits, because they lived close enough to a community centre for that to be practical in the middle of the city. Laurel is able to walk to groceries, her daughter’s daycare, an endless amount of restaurants and coffee shops, and the beach of Lake Ontario.
On our last full day in the city Jethro and I walked down to the beach to start our day with a dip in the lake. It was cooler than it was on Amherst, but still pleasant, especially in comparison to glacier fed BC lakes. I was beginning to pine for my own bed at this point, excited for the opportunity to visit Casa Loma in the afternoon, but also growing exhausted from not ever being on totally familiar footing anywhere I went.
And then almost more quickly than I wished we were back on a plane home.
Tumblr media
I mentioned in the previous post that we are going to Japan this year, and this is specifically in leu of Ontario. Fionn has moved out of their grandparent’s house, and is building a full adult life for himself in Toronto. He made a solo flight over to BC and stayed with us a couple days and we got to tour him around our city, and make bad choices in front of him we didn’t have the freedom to when he was a teenager. Calum is home for the summer and working at the chip shop we ate at while were visiting.
Tumblr media
Jethro repeatedly “promised” me a 2024 trip that was about him and me, and not all about visiting his family, and we’ve had our eyes on Japan for a while. He definitely worried that he was overextending me with constantly meeting new people and bringing me all over the province. But I feel a real sense of loss not going back to Ontario this year. Last Christmas Grandpa Greg and Grandma Carol gifted us a photograph of the bluffs on Amherst Island; there’s an inherent knowing among people who have visited the spot that it’s a special place.
The point in summer we were over there in years before has past, and it seems like I’ve forgotten to do something very important.

All Too Well Lyrics- Final Draft
Mar 16, 2011- Paris, France
We went to Germany, then Venice Italy, then Milan. Germany was an amazing crowd. I was on a serious show high after that one. We spent our 2 days off in Venice and it is CRAZY there. You have to travel everywhere by boat, and there are old houses where the front door steps lead straight down into the water! I’d heard about it, but actually seeing it is so surreal. The next day I went exploring a little in the morning but I went back to the hotel and slept all day. I think I was catching up on sleep I didn’t get the whole trip. It wasn’t until Venice that I actually slept a full night. We took a side trip to Schwangau, where they have the Castle Neuschwanstein. I’ve been in love with that castle since I was a little kid. I did a report on it in 4th grade. We drove 2 hours outside of Munich to rural (I mean remote, farmland, stuck in the 1600s rural) Germany and stayed in a tiny old hotel. My room had a circular bed that I couldn’t sleep in (one leg is always dangling of the side) and went shopping in this little village surrounded by fort castle walls because the town was built in the 1600s. We went to this little shop where we poured our own balsamic vinegar into bottles. I got this cranberry balsamic vinegar that is so good, you could probably drink it. I actually did. Anyway, today I had a lot of anxiety about my career because I don’t know what to do for the ‘Mean’ video. It’s such an important song and message, and it just isn’t coming together. I get so stressed out. I played our Milan show tonight then flew to Paris. My life is so beautiful right now. Everyone once in a while I have to remind myself to breathe and take in the view.
Jun 17, 2011- Nashville, TN
Something so unexpected and amazing has happened recently … I’ve become blissfully happy with my life. Like, actually grateful for every second of the day. I’ve noticed this onset for a while, but it’s really hit me in the last week, and especially since I wrote those 2 new songs. I really do need to create in order to live and feel worthwhile. But it’s more than just that. I’m happy with my family. I’m happy about this tour. I’m happy that tomorrow morning I get on a plane to Pittsburgh, play a stadium of 60,000 people, then fly home. I’m happy that the next day, I’m recording 2 new songs. I’m happy that I get to meet so many people on the road who make me feel like my music really matters to them. This ridiculous thing happens to me when I’m this happy … I start feeling like karma will balance it all out by making something tragic happen. But I’m trying to just show gratitude as much as I can. Everyday, every minute, I’m grateful for being happy right this moment. I think I’m a summer person. I’m also a work person. Tour gives me something to pour myself into and a reason to feel ok about sleeping in til noon on my days off. Today I went to a management meeting and approved/declined things and then went shopping for Father’s Day. Tomorrow it might rain in Pittsburgh. I hope it doesn’t. Taylor
Sep 8, 2011- Nashville, TN
I was supposed to fly to LA after the show in Tacoma WA last night, but after talking to my brother on the phone and missing my mom and my town where I knew my way around – I got homesick and flew back to Nashville instead. It was a long flight, but I’m so happy I chose to come home. Mostly because I wrote a song on the plane on the way home called ‘Red’. I got in at 6AM this morning, slept til 10, brought mom eggs benedict for breakfast, went and got coffee (the pumpkin spice lattes are back at Starbucks!!) and mom and I drove around talking. She showed me all the new decorating she’d done in her new house. It looks absolutely fantastic. She has scented candles burning in every room, so each part of the house smells like a new kind of heaven. In the evening I went to Nathan’s studio to record. When I played Red for him, he lost it. He absolutely freaked over the lyrics. I was so happy. As we started recording it, it got more and more awesome, with banjo and this affected vocal part that runs under the chorus going “re-e-e-e-e-d”. I’d love to name next album red. Scott came over because I called him and he was still working at the office. He said this song takes it to the next level. He lost it over this song. My mom loves it too. It’s so different than anything we’ve done. I can’t even tell you how alive and worthwhile I feel when I’m writing a new song and I finish it and people like it. It’s the most fulfilling feeling, like getting an A+ on report card. Recording again tomorrow.
Oct 30, 2011- Nashville, TN
Tonight we played in Memphis. I've had a chest infection for the last few days, so singing has been so hard. Last night, my voice kept quitting on me, going all raspy or just not being able to reach the high notes... I almost cancelled tonight's show, but I made it through. I went into a few coughing fits tonight, but I sounded better than last night. We've already played 3 shows in Nashville, Knoxville, Louisville, Lexington. We only have 9 shows left on this tour and I'm ready for a break. I've written two songs in the last few days. I want to record them so bad, but my voice is shot from being so run down. I'm just so glad to have a few days off. (ok... 2) Guess what I'm doing tomorrow? Getting a kitten!!! I've wanted a cat for so long and I'm finally doing it. I love Scottish Folds. I look up internet videos of them. They're so cute and love humans. So I'm going to get this little kitten tomorrow morning! I'm naming her Meredith. Meredith Gray. Because she's gray. Taylor <3

Zhangjiajie
I’ve spent the last 4ish days in the rural area of Zhangjiajie, in the mountains of Hunan province in south central China.
I flew in from Beijing on Saturday to Zhangjiajie and then it was an hour drive to the town of Yangjiajie. This town is mainly farmland, lots of roosters crowing, and is very warm and humid. I came here to see Zhangjiajie National Forest, which is famous for its over 3,000 sandstone pillars which are on average about 660 feet tall. They were formed about 350 million years ago due to softer rock around the pillars eroding and falling away. I have truly never seen anything like it, I cannot adequately describe how huge these things were or how amazing it was to see.
The owner of the small hotel I’m staying at, Carol, gave me an extensive run down on how to do a self-guided tour of the park; which I was glad I did instead of doing an official tour. My hotel was only about 300 meters from the park entrance, so I could walk there myself. The park itself despite being very intimidating in its sheer size and the fact that most of it is hundreds of meters in the air, was pretty easy to get around in. There is a system of cable cars to get up the mountain, and a series of buses, bridges, and hiking trails to get around the park from there.
China only very recently opened its borders for the first time in over 3 years, and it is notoriously difficult to get a Chinese visa. While in the bigger cities like Beijing there were definitely more foreigners and expats, and people in general were more used to foreigners, I’ve definitely been noticing a difference in Hunan. I think I have seen less than a dozen foreigners total in the time I’ve been here. I get a lot of stares and kids pointing at me going “哪国人!” (foreigner) I even had a family ask to take my picture with their kid because I was the first foreigner she had seen. Its understandable, not a lot of outsiders have really been traveling through here lately. It is honestly pretty refreshing to travel and be around mainly locals and not the crowd of college aged drunk backpackers that tend to frequent a lot of touristy places around the world.
Don’t get me wrong, people have been so incredibly helpful and accommodating and welcoming the entire time I’ve been here. Every single time I have gotten turned around someone has asked if they could help me. People have been so patient with my broken Chinese. And there is definitely a lot of privilege being a white English speaker that has made getting around a lot easier. I have just definitely been feeling very much like an outsider and it gets a bit wearing to have so many stares every time I do anything and even though its not the same at all it has definitely been very eye opening for what a lot of people experience daily that I haven’t experienced to this extent before.
Anyway. I spent most of Sunday exploring the park. It was really incredible. I just could not comprehend the scale of how big the pillars were. It was quite literally breathtaking and jaw dropping. More than once I stopped dead in my tracks because I just could not believe my eyes. At one point we crossed a natural bridge that had formed between two of the pillars. There were also lots of monkeys and at one point there was a gigantic sculpture to someone in the Communist party with a ton of Communist memorabilia around it, idk what that was all about but it was huge. It was super duper hot and humid but being up high in the mountains helped a lot. Once I got back down to the bottom though I realized I’d gotten sunburned despite it being cloudy. I always forget thats a thing. When I made it back to my hotel I was more sweat than person by that point.
Carol’s mom cooks meals for the hotel, so I ate very well the whole time I was in Zhangjiajie. On Saturday night they were hosting a school group from a nearby university, 20 students, a professor named Jin, and his family. I got to talk with the professor for a while. Apparently he had lived in Germany and Switzerland for over a decade while getting his degrees. He asked me a lot of questions about the US election and he honestly knew more about it than I did. He said people in China pay close attention to this because really the results impact the entire world, which is unfortunately true.
On Monday Carol had again given me extensive instructions for a self guided tour of Tianmen Mountain. This was a bit more complicated. First it involved an hour long car ride to Zhangjiajie, then taking a series of buses to get to the bottom of the mountain and a cable car to get halfway up the mountain. Tianmen Mountain (天门山)translates to Heaven’s Door Mountain. It is called this because of an incredible door like natural arch halfway up the mountain that looks like it is leading to the sky. After taking the cable car halfway up the mountain, I hiked up the famous 999 steps to 天门, Heaven’s Gate. It truly looked like we were climbing stairs directly into the sky.
Once at the top of the staircase, we entered a cave into which was astoundingly built a gigantic escalator which took us up the rest of the way to the top of the mountain. I cannot even imagine how all of this was built.
From there, we were a good 4,500 feet up in the air. I could not comprehend how high up we were. And there was a Burger King and a Bubble Tea restaurant at the top somehow. I had some lunch and them took the long winding path along the cliffside. The path was quite literally hanging off the cliff with a sheer drop of 4,500 feet below. I walked along here for about 3 kilometers, one section of the path was even a glass walk which was honestly terrifying. There were lots of little kids with their families doing the hike as well, and they were absolutely not convinced that the glass was strong enough to hold them, which was completely understandable.
I’ve noticed a lot of people visiting places like this in very fancy clothing, even little kids will wear their best dresses or traditional outfits, because people take a lot of pictures and want to look good in the pictures, even though it is very hot and humid and there is a lot of physical activity.
After hiking I arrived to 天门山死, Tianmenshan Temple. Which, again, was incredible that such a huge temple was built so high up. From there I took something similar to a skilift to take me back to the start of the mountain path, and from there took a cablecar all the way back to town. I was told that this last cablecar was one of the longest cablecars in the world, and it certainly seemed like it. It brought us from 4,500 at the top of the mountain all the way back to the ground in the middle of town 30 minutes later. It was really cool. The line to get in it was pretty intense though. The park tries to limit traffic by only selling 3,000 tickets per hour, which is considered very few tickets given the size of the park, but the problem arises when everyone leaves the park at the same time at the end of the day. This resulted in a very enormous line to get down.
From there I took a shared car to get to my hotel. A lot of people live in very rural areas in the provinces and its tough to make the trek into the city from there so whenever someone drives from the city to town or vice versa they try to fill up the car with people. People generally chip in for gas so its like a rural version of uber without the app. People just roll their window down if they see someone standing on the street or walking down the road and ask if they want a lift.
My window in my room had a gap where it wouldn’t shut all the way so it was letting mosquitoes in. I had managed to block it the last two nights and it wasn’t bad at all but because a rainstorm was incoming there were way more bugs tonight than before. I’m talking thirty to forty mosquitos and other giant bugs I don’t know what they were and don’t really want to know. They’d all gotten through the blocked window and were everywhere which was horrible, so I managed to switch rooms for the rest of my stay.
On Monday it was rainy in the morning and while I could have gone back to Zhangjiajie National Park to see more of it, its an enormous park, I didn’t have it in me and ended up spending the whole day sleeping. My big outing of the day was going with Carol to the grocery store to get snacks. On Tuesday I went to the train station to head to my next stop, Fenghuang, which is also in Hunan province and was only about a 2 hour train ride away.
I’ll update about Fenghuang soon, I’ll be here for about 3 more days.

warning: the following contains spoilers for pokémon scarlet/violet
aether and i actually had some errands to run, so instead of doing our usual “let’s walk everywhere on our journey!” routine, we switched it up a bit! after finding a flying taxi, we headed to the town of cortondo, a lovely little place in the south province that we’d briefly visited. and while we were there, we thought, “hey, we can do the gym challenge here while we’re in the area!” sooo, we did!
Tumblr media
it was a big surprise to run into nemona again! she swears she isn’t following us around, but it’s getting a little… weird? uncomfortable? sorry nemona! this is a rural area that’s big on farmland, so we didn’t expect to be seeing her here. she seems so… suburban? either way, that aside, she insisted she wasn’t stalking us to beg for a battle, and then sort of let really quickly after?
Tumblr media
and so, we are introduced to a neat little tidbit of cortondo culture! the olive roll is both a gym trial and a tradition! by doing completing the challenge, not only do you receive the opportunity to battle the sugarbug of cortondo, katy, but also, you invite good luck for the upcoming olive harvest! and that’s amazingly cool, in my opinion!
Tumblr media
the olive roll itself takes place north of town, in a field specially designed for it. you have to push a giant, olive-shaped ball through an obstacle course and into the field at the end! there’s neat ramps and trainers you can battle to take shortcuts, but despite how heavy the olive ball is, i opted to take the long way!
Tumblr media
after a good bit of struggling, i managed to get the olive ball to the goal! nice!! i hope the luck between both my and my boyfriend’s challenges yields a fruitful olive harvest! next stop, battling the sugarbug! i hadn’t heard too much about katy other than she specializes in bug-type pokémon, but with a title like that, she sounded quite sweet!
Tumblr media
and sweet she is! when i met her, she was feeding one of her vivillion a nice treat. she introduced herself as katy, owner of the soapberry patisserie… but quickly realized she was giving me the wrong introduction. apparently, she’s both a gym leader and a sweets maker! i often forget that gym leaders are just powerful trainers with strong bonds with their pokémon rather than unapproachable, intimidating people known only for their prowess. with both katy and brassius, i’ve been delighted to learn otherwise!
i brought in reaper alone for this battle, confident that he was strong enough to defeat any bug type thrown his way! katy’s nymble and tarountula both fell to him before i knew it. i knew it was a good idea to teach him flamethrower! her last pokémon fit her quite well: a sweet little teddiursa! defeating the terrastilized bear was not as easy, but reaper handled it well!
Tumblr media
after the victory, she presented us not only with a sparkly gym badge, but also cupcakes! i’m not usually a big fan of cupcakes, but her sweet treats were absolutely remarkable! also bonus points because i absolutely love cherries, haha! she wished us luck on our travels before she sent us off. i hope we’ll get the chance to talk more in the future!
Tumblr media
and then i met this guy. his scary atmosphere is um… very off-putting? now, that could be because he’s part of the pokémon league… or he’s part of the elite four… or because he’s a teacher at uva??? this very intimidating guy is actually the art teacher of uva? he’s got a stern face and a way of speaking that makes me want to avoid going to his class in the future, even if i really love art.
Tumblr media
like… is this guy really one of my teachers?? yikes! he followed up promising my defeat with, “it’d be a pleasure to see you in my class” and i am so not sure how to feel about that! :/ yeesh, how scary! he’s also got this weird little cape on the back of his jacket that makes him seem a liiiiittle less serious, but i’m absolutely terrified to attend that art class!
signing off for now and sincerely hoping none of the uva staff know my blog! ^^;;

Nonexistence
Tony slammed the trunk of his Honda sedan shut and stormed around to the front, kicking up dust in the church’s dirt parking.
“Where the hell are you even going?” Kelsi screamed at him, sobbing on the church steps.
“I don’t know!” Tony yelled back. “Maybe I’ll drive down to Camden and jump in the river. Or just drive off the fucking pier.”
“Well I— You can’t—”
“I fucking can,” Tony said.
“Wait!” Kelsi screamed. “I have to tell you something. Please.” She ran up to him and held onto his arms, her body quivering.
Tony sighed.
“Get in the car,” he said.
They pulled away from the white church and drove through Medford, heading south toward Berlin. Little white and blue houses speckled the defunct farmland returning to wilderness. At length Kelsi spoke:
“I know where you came from.”
“What?” Tony said, holding one hand on top of the steering wheel and staring straight ahead.
“Three years ago, you had an accident in Cinnaminson with your truck.”
“I didn’t have any fucking accident in Cinnaminson,” Tony snapped.
“Wait, listen to me. They took you to Cooper Hospital in an ambulance. You were so badly hurt. A semi had struck you going the opposite way on 130.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” Tony said. Outside, the scenery change to the mix of sandy soil and low pines that typified rural South Jersey.
“Please just listen to me,” Kelsi said. “At the hospital I waited all day and all night while the emergency crew tried to help you. Eventually, a small doctor in a white coat came to see me. He pulled me into a conference room and told me I had a choice.”
Tony momentarily took both hands off the wheel to rub them on his face, then gripped the wheel on both sides and glared at the road. Kelsi went on:
“He said they could not save your natural life. The semi had hit you too hard. Too many parts were broken and bleeding. Instead, he said, they could save your practical life.”
Tony said nothing to this. To the right, a series of small lakes passed by.
“The doctor told me they could take your consciousness and recreate it in another body, perhaps an artificial one, and I could have you forever. They’d frieze your sperm and I could have your kids and you’d be their father never knowing you died and were brought back to life.”
“Kelsi, this is the dumbest story I’ve ever heard,” Tony said. “I’m not a fucking robot.” He squeezed his hands on the wheel as if in proof.
“You’re right,” Kelsi sobbed. “You’re not a robot.”
“Then what are you telling this ridiculous story for?”
For a long time Kelsi could not answer. Her face was in her hands, crying. Tony stopped the car along the side of the road and they sat there beside the pines. Eventually Kelsi spoke:
“The doctor told me it would cost a lot of money. It was too much, way more than I could afford. So he told me about the second option.”
Kelsi took her hands away from her face and watched the sun dipping below the treetops. There were no other cars around and all was calm and quiet but for Kelsi’s heavy breathing.
“In the second option, the doctors wouldn’t recreate you. They would recreate the image of you. They’d plant a chip in my brain that would make me think you were still alive, make me perceive you, make me feel and see you, even though you weren’t really there. To me, it would be as if I never lost you.” Kelsi resumed sobbing into her hands.
“Kelsi, this is some messed up Inceptionshit. Obviously I exist. I’m sitting here talking to you. I can tell I exist.”
“No you can’t!” Kelsi yelled. “I’m just imagining you saying that. You’re just a creation of my imagination.”
“I can’t be a creation of your imagination because I know I exist!” Tony said.
“No you don’t!” Kelsi yelled again. “You don’t know. You don’t think. You just seem to say those things. I imagine you say those things. None of it is real. You’re not really there.”
“Kelsi this is bullshit!” Tony shifted around uncomfortably in his seat, searching for the right words to say. The sun sank behind the pins to the west and cast long shadows over the narrow road.
“I don’t care if you believe me,” Kelsi said. “But please just trust me.”
“If I don’t believe you, how can I trust you?”
“If you leave,” Kelsi said, “there is no more of you. Outside of me, you don’t exist. Walk away, and you’re nothing. I don’t care if you believe that or not, just don’t do it. Don’t walk away and become nothing.”
Tony started the car. They drove back to Medford. Tony parked in their driveway and they walked into the house in silence. On the TV, the local news talked about shootings and carjackings in Philadelphia and Camden.
In the morning, Tony packed a suitcase. As he did, he said to Kelsi, who was lying on the bed:
“Maybe I do believe you, Kelsi. Maybe your tears speak truth. But I won’t do what you say. I can’t live my life like that, tied to you by some metaphysical paradox. If vanishing into nonexistence is the cost of freedom, so be it.”
And he walked out of her life forever.

Back to my shorts, in this one, she interacts with Toadman. Here I show that she knows of the events of megaman 4 but no details.
Tempo dashed through farmland and around fields. She's not used to being in the rural areas, especially areas where the GPS in her visor doesn't help her. Luckily, she knows one thing, what Toadman's mobile station looks like. Once she finds it, she comes to a screeching halt. “Tempo please. No need to kick up dust.” Toadman said welcomingly. “Sorry, I saw you station too late to slow to a stop. Anyway, here's your seeds! Whacha growing here?” Toadman takes the seed packets from her and explains “well just some basics. Wheat, barley, potates. Ect.” He walks over to the field. She asks a question “Toady… do you ever question your purpose? Like what you're for? Especially after the Wily incident? I know very little about it, no one wants to tell me… but…do you?” Toadman looks to her, and he hops to her and hugs her. “Tempo… you're not gonna get more from me about the incident. If you really want to know more, you'd need to talk to Ring… he's the only one of us who can talk about it. But let's look at your question.” He let's go and does a come here motion as he starts to put holes in the ground for seeds. “I, was built as an agricultural robot. I plant seeds, I water in mass, and I fertilize soil. That's what I was built to do. Why I look like a toad I have no idea.” He throws seeds into the holes he made and starts covering them up. “When Dr. Albert Wily threatened Father and Kalinka, my rain generating missile, the rain flush, was modified to create acid rain, and I was changed into a combat robot.” He starts creating the rain flush by wiggling his hips side to side. “Since it has changed back and I'm back on the farms. But I'm still looked at in fear due to my short stint as a robot master. Some people still see Wily's combat robot. Does this mean that's all I am?” Tempo had been letting him talk, but she answered “well no, you're not that guy anymore. You're Toady, my brother Toadman, a man who loves plants and agriculture and, for some reason, dislikes Snakeman. You're gonna water these crops with your water missile, and it'll also fertilize the ground and end a short-lived famine.” The rain flush fires, and he throws Tempo an umbrella. She quickly puts it up to protect her engine from the rain. “And there's the answer to your question. You are whatever you decide to be. But I have a feeling this isn't about just purpose. If you're looking at expectations, I'm afraid I'm not the one to ask.” He puts his arms out as if basking in the rain. “The only advice I have for that is, learn to love who you are and ignore what people think you should be. That's how you stay happy.” Tempo smiled “Thanks Toady. That really helped. I'd better get going.” She revs her engine, and Toadman tells her “glad I could help. You get going. It was nice to see you.” She looked back “It was good seeing you too. See ya later! Bye!” She dashed away, and he shouted “Bye!”

Seeing a lot about dogs lately, and how all dogs should be on a lead outside of the house. To some extent, I agree, in heavy urban areas you should put them on a lead... but I grew up in a town of less than 500 people in a valley between two mountain ranges on some of the best farmland my country has to offer. We had a lot of people who came through, to hike up mountains or because we're on route between the two biggest cities who would always without fail complain about our dogs off of leads in the fields and up the mountains.
Those dogs are trained so bloody well, you wouldn't believe it. My dad was a dog handler for the army, and then for our countries police service. If nothing else, my dad damn well knew what he was doing.
Those dogs in fields seemingly left alone with a whole field of sheep? They're there to protect the sheep. If anything is a threat, then that's when they'll become dangerous. Even then, most of our livestock guardian dogs much preferred to be big and loud to scare away predators than to physically attack.
Those dogs off of leads with ten year old me up in the mountains? There's no human with me that I know, one of them dogs is going ahead, they're the leader, they come to me if the path is blocked. The dog staying next to me? Watch her bolt if I fall off of the path, or slip into the lakes. She knows the route back home, and she knows how to get somebody to get help.
That dog that used to try and herd us all up to school in a morning? She's a 'retired' collie (rest in peace to our Eden) who doesn't go into the fields to work much anymore, so she follows and rounds us up all the way into the school gates and then goes home at her own pace.
Whilst I'm talking about how dogs are incredibly trained and won't do you any harm unless you go to hurt one of us, do you know which animal isn't well trained and which will bite you? The donkey. They're quite common in my country for rural people to have a donkey - they're territorial, they aren't particularly high maintenance, and they love our weather (our weather is genuinely shite). If you put your hand over the fence and the donkey bites you, I have no sympathy. She's in a private field and there are signs telling you not to try and pet her or feed her.
Additionally, horses out in the fields and you can't see the stables. They haven't been abandoned, they're grazing! We had a group of tourists open the gate of the horses field and try to take them out the field to 'find their owners' they didn't get very far but by the time we got there, one of our draught horses was ready to do some damage.
Moral of the story: in these small farming towns, the dogs are trained, and the ones in fields are not trained to be around strange humans. Please respect that. You make our life just that little bit easier by not insisting the dogs work on leads or by insisting that the animals shouldn't be alone in a field.
