So I usually try to do music from a bunch of different countries on these playlists, but now that the Latvian thing has become an acknowledged running joke, it's time to take it to the next level. Also, while I dunk on the algorithm as much as any tumblr user... it really has taken my love of Citi Zēni and turned into a plethora of awesome artists that I've had an amazing time listening to. So I'm gonna just give Latvia some love here.

The game is simple: Pick a song from one of my bad descriptions. You do not have to recognize the song to pick it. Just go with the description that suits your mood. Feel the vibes. Vote, reblog so other people can vote, and at the end of a week I will make a playlist out of the results, from the song with the least votes to the song with the most votes.

Charles’ mum never tried to leave his dad. Not when he smashed her Ashe Bhosle records. Not when his dad used a belt on Charles for the first time. Not even when a neighbour called the police after hearing an argument through the walls (is it an argument if there’s only one voice shouting? His mum had learned to hold her tongue and at thirteen Charles knew how to brace for a blow). The WPC turned up at the door the day after, asked Charles’ mother questions in an even voice, and left alone after finishing the tea his Mum served on their best bone china.

But at least twice a year she and Charles packed their cases and caught a train to Birmingham, leaving his dad behind with a freezer full of carefully labelled Tupperware.

His auntie’s home in Birmingham was packed and lively. His auntie, uncle and his two cousins, Priti and Hari, all in an end of terrace house. There was a constant hum of noise there– Hari playing ska records on his record player from his bedroom; the clatter of pots and pans from the kitchen where his mum and auntie would congregate; the stamp of Priti’s feet up and down the stairs as she rushed around getting ready to meet friends.

His mother had a voice in her sister’s house. Charles woke to the sound of her and his auntie talking each morning. She called Charles beta here. At home he only remembers her calling him that once. Charles had been very small and full of chicken pox. His mum had sat on the floor next to his bed to stop him scratching, her hand smoothing though his sweat-soaked hair. She’d sang to Charles to lull him to sleep. In Birmingham, she sang every day.

When Charles grew enough not to be a complete liability on the cricket pitch, Hari took him along to play with his friends.

“I’ve got a friend like you who’ll be there. Aidan,” Hari said as they cut through the back streets to the playing fields.

Aidan wasn’t like Charles in appearance or manner. He was broad chested, with dark, tightly curled hair that showed a reddish tint when the sun hit it. He cuffed his trousers like Hari did, and his Docs were brightly shined. His short-sleeved shirt was a maroon and white check, his braces thin and black. He looked sharp. He wasn’t like Charles at all, except that he was half-caste too.

“Jamaican dad, Irish mum,” Aidan said, offhand, when they were introduced. “Saves you asking later. Hari always get it the wrong way round.”

“Indian mum, English dad.” Charles replied, and then tagged on, “I’m Charles.” Aidan smiled then, like they’d just shared a joke.

“He can be on my team,” Aidan told Hari, and grabbed Charles’ shoulder to guide him to where there was a gap in the team’s fielding cover.

As Hari walked over to the other team by the stumps he shouted, “Don’t show me up,” to Charles’ back.

“He says that like he’s any cop himself,” Aidan muttered into Charles’ ear, and told him the story of Hari falling into the wicket just the week before.

At the end of that week Charles left with a ska mixtape from Aidan, and two Fred Perry polos that Hari had outgrown.

At 15, his older cousin, Priti, snuck Charles out with her to a daytimer.

In the queue, Priti swiped and smudged kohl under Charles’ eyes. “Gotta hide that baby face,” she said and pinched his cheeks. She made him promise, yet again, that he’d keep his gob shut about the daytimer from his mum, her parents and most especially Hari. “He’s such a grass,” Priti said. He could already hear the hum of music leaking out from inside the converted warehouse.

He let out a huff of breath when they got past the bouncer and the ticket table, and Priti laughed. “If your parents could see you, such a naughty boy!”

Priti’s friends ran to meet her and pulled her onto the dancefloor to dance in a swirl of long hair and fruity body mist. Charles waved off their beckoning hands and watched the dancefloor heave with bodies. The music was a strange mix of familiar and unfamiliar: bouncing synths with Indian strings overlaid, all underpinned by the shifting rhythms of dhol drums. The vocals singing over the top sounded joyful and yearning by turns.

By the end of the afternoon, Charles had joined Priti and her friends on the dancefloor where they taught him dance moves, taking the piss at every misstep he made, but cheering him on when a girl asked him to dance with her.

When Charles broke away to visit the loos he looked at himself in the mirror. His curly hair was frizzy with sweat, his eyes dark with the smudged kohl. He looked different. He didn’t look tougher, or more like his cousins. But maybe, sweaty and happy with his eyes traced in eyeliner, he looked more like himself.

On the way home, Priti sent Charles into the chippy with a fiver while she changed and scrubbed off her make up in the public toilets. They unwrapped the newspaper when she finally emerged and walked slowly back to the house, eating. The vinegar the chips were doused in stung Charles’ sinuses. At the top of the street, Priti stopped and rubbed a screwed-up hanky across Charles’ cheek. “I’m not explaining how you got that lipstick on you,” she said.

She left the kohl alone.

Sara Chidouin - Sara likes indie rock, folk rock, and indie music. She's a Mitski girl and loves The Lumineers. Though she also loves cheesy pop songs that would borderline embarrass her if anyone found out she listened to them.

Joe Tazuna - Joe loves KPOP! He's a big fan of "BTS", "Blackpink", and "Day6." The more upbeat the song the more he's into it generally, though he's the type who can list at least a few songs he likes out of most genres. So a song having a more slow or sad tone wouldn't be a dealer breaker for him.

Gin Ibushi - Gin likes theme songs from TV shows. They're catchy and scratch his brain in just the right way, and he often hums them to himself during school hours. He also likes pop, rock, and instrumentals.

Keiji Shinogi - Keiji is a blues man. He loves the sound as it does something to his emotions that's indescribable. In his opinion it's best listened to while sitting on a park bench watching the world pass by. He also likes country and pop.

Alice Yabusame - Alice loves rock, of course, since it reminds him of his sibling bond. Yet, he has a soft spot for songs from musicals and a not so hidden love of ska.

Reko Yabusame - To no surprise Reko loves rock! She's the type of person to spend hours on YouTube looking for a good rock cover of her favorite songs of other genres. She also has a soft spot for gothic tunes and more unique sounds that most people wouldn't find beauty in listening to.

Nao Egokoro - Nao has a highly specific indie taste that could come straight from the "Life Is Strange" soundtrack. All of the music she really likes is perfect for staring at the celling and contemplating life, and this does not register with her as she'll give you music recommendations with a big cheery grin.

Kazumi Mishima - Mishima likes instrumentals. He often puts them on in the background and listens to them while he grades papers or makes some nice afternoon tea. Generally he likes the softer ones the best, but every now and then he'll look for something that sounds more epic.

Q-taro Burgerberg - He has a not so secret love of country music that he tries to hide, but most people assume that's his favorite genre immediately because of how he's dressed. He's big on banjos. He also likes R&B.

Kai Satou - Kai likes orchestra music. Anything with a ton of instruments that sounds like it could be in the background of a heavily dramatic soap opera is his favorite. He likes pop as well.

Kanna Kizuchi - Kanna loves love songs. As long as the main theme of the lyrics are about platonic or romantic love she can listen to any genre and find enjoyment. Though she also likes chiptune.

Shin Tsukimi - Shin listens to a lot of chiptune. It makes him feel like a cool computer hacker from the moves, even though he'd never admit to that. He's also the type to listen to video game/tv/movie soundtracks non stop. Though he also likes indie music and anything by Mitski.

Ranmaru Kageyama - Ranmaru's big into synthwave. He tends to listen to it while he studies or is drifting off the sleep at night. He also likes indie and blues.

Naomichi Kurumada - Naomichi loves pop rock. It's the one genre that always makes him super excited to work out. His favorite songs have an upbeat tempo and usually he's not big on songs that have a slow melody.

Anzu Kinashi - Anzu likes jazz. She loves the upbeat tone and trumpets mixed with fast paced piano. If she had background music she'd want to have a lot of trumpets for sure.

Rhaya Headcanons

I’m at work, bored, and the brainworms are in full force with this bean. So it’s time to blurb some random facts with him!

Fishing is an important hobby for Rhaya, be it line or net fishing. It’s not for sport, but it gives him a nostalgic joy to it, as it’s one of the last connections to his parents he remembers vividly

Coupled with the last fact, give him a frayed net and he’ll fix it. A line and he’ll have at least three knots to tie a hook to it for. He can’t teach it back worth a damn, but he just… knows.

Rhaya collects souveniers from every trip he goes on. From clothes, to instruments, weapons, knick knacks, doodads, snowglobes, ESPECIALLY snowglobes, he collects it all. His room’s a tad cluttered from it all, honestly, but they serve as physical memories for his travels.

Rhaya’s go to food is anything spicy, but he will eat just about anything without a second thought.

His favorite drinks however? Number two is coffee. The caffeine do nothing for him, but he really likes how there’s a suble taste difference depending on who brews it and where. His absolute favorite drink is Catnip Tea. For reasons.

Rhaya’s a sore loser, but not in a bad way. Since he started learning to use swords, he gets estatic at the thought of losing a duel with a more skilled opponent. It just means he get to try/learn something new and rematch them. IMMEDIATELY. He’s such a good sport about it that it’s hard for people to say no, but they ended up putting a limit on how many times he could do rematches at the dueling clubs he and his master went to.

Rhaya doesn’t hold grudges… with anything done to himself. He’s usually one to live and let live and forget the wrong people have done to him short of physical harm.

Sleights against his friends and loved ones, however, and at the least you’ll get a snarky and petty possum who will get under your skin and inconvenience you in creative ways. If he chooses violence… he’s quick and to the point on getting his pound of flesh on someone’s behalf.

Rhaya’s dense when it comes to love, both to the feelings of others and his own. But his love language tends to bleed through with spending time with someonr, displays of affection, taking an interest in their hobbies, sparring with them, and gifting souveniers. There would be a distinct difference in how he’d treat someone as opposed to his other friends.

Rhaya wouldn’t wear matching color socks.

If it wasn’t obvious, if it were modern times, Rhaya would be a ska possum. Or a ska punk possum. Some combination of it.

Cuttlefish creep Rhaya out. He can’t explain it, but his mind decided that THAT’S the one ‘nope’ thing for him.

Due to Rhaya’s… interesting situation on who raised him, certain things that seem like common sense to most seem.. weird to him. Not casting magic by stabbing people. Not eating random bugs and plants that you know are edible just because. People not cracking jokes and flirting while in danger. …Okay, the last one is understandable.

Rhaya loves puzzles. Has a love hate relationship with jigsaw puzzles, however. He tends to use the motif of missing or found pieces a lot.

Rhaya’s a tactile and visual learner. He can hear something explained to him and it may leave him within the next hour. Seeing things, writing things down, experiencing it, and experimenting helped him develop the skills that he has now.

He’s a biter. I will not elaborate.

Rhaya can be upside down for several hours with no consequences.

Whenever Rhaya gives someone a gift, it’s usually something well thought out. And may involve him shadowing someone to be sure that the gift he has planned will work. They will remember the intent, so he has to be sure to leave an impact.

Rhaya doodles in his journal to help punctuate entries.

Rhaya has an interest in the language of flowers. He can’t tell you full specifics, but he remembers a certain combination of flowers he always gets for someone. She seems to like it a lot when he delivers them.

That’s all for now. I can do more, but I might going into spoiler territory. So I’ll leave all these for now. …I really cannot wait for these sessions to be weekly.

11. what is the best live music show you’ve ever been to?

hmmm. this is always a funny question bc i often times can’t see the stage so this is not based on visuals. when i went to scranton apocalypse fest last year it was dope bc i’d argue most of the bands were highly entertaining and great. esp parkway drive and motionless in white. the kid of death tour was another good one, in this moment and ice nine kills were visually stunning and on point. fleetwood mac had a lot of visuals that were cool but it was just awesome to see stevie dancing around as she does and also the fact i got to hear christine mcvie live destroyed me!!!

12. who is a band or artist that you’ve never seen that you’re dying to see?

good question!! slipknot is one that i’ve always wanted to see but thought the crowds would be too scary. blink 182 bc they were influential to baby acey getting into pop punk. my ultimate jealousy band i’ll never see live (bc they’re messy and hate each other) is pink floyd.

i’m currently on an ice nine kills kick (i have a bunch of gifsets coming soon bc their mvs are interesting, especially for the silver screams) so i’m gonna say IT is the end. it’s been stuck in my head especially the honk honks. (it’s metalcore meets ska which is like peak high school acey)

hardest question bc idk what constitutes as underrated. whenever i think a band is it’s bc i’m not looking in the right spots. i think i’m gonna say the spill canvas bc no one ever talks abt them anymore and one fell swoop was really big for me and ship playlists.

uhhh. another hard one bc overrated seems so bleh. i’ll just say there are some artists i see around a lot that i don’t listen to bc they’re not my cup of tea. (if this was 2008 i would say cute is what we aim for or boys like girls but it’s 2024 acey)

I have SO many. I listen to a wild range of music. Everything from ska to indie rock to punk to emo to pop. Some of my all-time fave bands include: The Killers, Foreigner, Avett Brothers, Postal Service, Betty Who, Beyonce, Lizzo, Tegan and Sara.

16. Want any tattoos? What of? 

I have around 35 tattoos (hard to count when you have half sleeves and such). I DO want more tattoos, but in the past two years one of my chronic conditions has made it so I'm allergic to my tattoos. They get welts and hives all the time. Which really sucks because uhhhh, my entire body is covered in them 🤷‍♂️

18. Who is the last person you texted? 

I sent Frankie some smut as a little treat!

20. What/who do you miss? 

I miss all my loves in the US. But in terms of 'what' -- the thing I miss everyday is being able to leave my house without it having to be an entire Event. I miss life before the pandemic where I didn't have to take 100 pre-emptive steps to protect myself every time I go out. I miss 2020 when everyone (in my country) was in this together, when everyone was masking and staying home when they were sick, when everything was accessible by being online. I miss when people cared.

The pandemic isn't over. Some of us have never left lockdown.

22. How much sleep did you get last night? 

I actually went to sleep hella early. I was asleep before my daily kudos email (this is how I tell time, okay?) which comes about 00:20. Then, I got up early with Doom Them -- so I think I got about 7 hours? I only need 5-6 to be functional.

Last night I cried from laughing so hard at this picture of our cat

26. What are some seemingly childish things you like? 

I don't believe joy has an age limit. I'm a regular at our local toy stores, I know all the staff, I'm always buying new fidget toys and Squishmallows. I got into Squishmallows about the same time I got my Autism dx (mid-2020) and since then, Squish have become a constant form of comfort for us. We currently have about 300 in our collection -- and that's after some major downsizing. There's no way to know how many squish we've rotated through over the years. Here's the last full squad photo we took in Jan 2022 (there's nowhere in our house to do a full pic of the 300 we have currently)

28. How are you, really? 

I'm actually doing well this week. Summer weather arrived without warning and my depression is lifting. I feel really inspired for the first time in weeks!

Not really. My middle name is the name of some random ski instructor my parents met the year before I was born (I have theories about this, about why my dad randomly remembered this person's name -- but that's a whole other thing. Oh, and also that's one of my middle names, it's complicated. I have like 5 names)

Ornithophobia (fear of birds). Also scared of horses, cows, and airbags.

40. Do you like the beach? Do you prefer it sunny or cloudy? 

YES!! I love living ten minutes from the beach. We go there a lot to relax and scream at the ocean. I prefer sunny weather, hands down, but it's cloudy 90% of the time here.

Cranky Cave(tm)! Cranky cave is when I'm having meltdowns. I go to my room and turn on the fairy lights and galaxy projector. Grab a ton of squish and fidgets. Bury myself in blankets. And watch my comfort shows.

Postcards from Snagglepuss

The Return of Betty Makaska (not to be confused, remember, with Bde Maka Ska in Minneapolis)

Rather brilliant autumnal-like afternoon in Wisconsin Dells, relaxing with Huckleberry Hound and our genial host, Crazy Claws, by that last one's retreat along Artificial Lake Delton over tea ... when, by sheer surprise, SHE returned into my life.

The "she," if you ask, reader, is Betty Makaska. You probably remember her from my recalling an episode with her in a houseboat on Lake of the Ozarks some years back during a typically muggy Ozarks summer while having breakfast in Minneapolis for some reason or another. A mountain lion not unlike yours truly from the same general area.

And by sheer surprise, even, which caught even Crazy Claws off his rocker!

"Ohhhh, SNAGGLEPUSS!!" Betty explained to me as she made her way through.

"BETTY--!!!" replied I. "Where have you been all this time, and what bringest thou to this retreat?!"

"Old times' sake," saith she. Trying not to be grotty-looking considering the fall weather in such regions as these, yet having that certain quality (or want thereof) making her somewhat endearing. And you can guess, even Huckleberry Hound was a little stunned to the point of some hot tea spilling on his leg (which he was quick to blot up)!

"I assume," saith I, "you still recall that somewhat interesting night on that houseboat of yours in the mugginess of summer on the Lake of the Ozarks, the portable air conditioning, and such wonderful lovemaking like we had through that night!"

(You could sense Huckleberry Hound was blushing and at once giggling at the thought.)

"Oh, do I?!!" remarked she incredulously. "Snagglepuss, you couldn't have been a more wonderful romantic like we were that muggy summer's evening!"

Later, at supper of roast pork loin, stuffing and gravy:

"I do have to admit," Betty remarked, "that my heart, so to speak, is close to Hog Waller."

"The Hillbilly Bears, I take it," remarked I.

"Obviously ... and what's particularly interesting is where the entire ursine community, or so it seems, can just love to make camp by the riverside when things get muggy, and spend much of the time swimming and diving. Which, I have to admit, I learned early on."

"So how goes the Rugg family?"

"Especially interesting is where Shag, the younger son, will swim out to Maw Rugg, kneeling underwater near the shallows, for some breastfeeding most interesting ... as in doing such underwater!"

"I take it Shag Rugg likes it that way."

"Which," Betty added, "can get to be an interesting prelude for some rather fascinating diving adventures where they've actually found freshwater pearls on occasion in that river!" (In matter of fact, she was wearing a necklace made from freshwater pearls actually found close to the Rugg homestead.) "Oh, and I ever mentioned where Floral Rugg, the older sister, has also done some diving herself?"

"Mainly for the fun of it."

"True, Snag, but she's also found the odd freshwater pearl as well."

"Rather fascinating, if I may say so myself!"

"Though I must admit that the pork loin was rather juicy ... how exactly was it possible?"

To which Huckleberry Hound remarked, and rather casually, "I just sprinkled on some Pleasoning over the top of the roast before baking."

"Obvious Wisconsin pride there," Crazy Claws remarked. "And not too salty in the process!"

At any rate, with quite the dinner conversation complemented by the presence of a certain old flame of mine in the catsonna of a certain Betty Makaska, we managed to finish off the pork loin roast that evening. How that was possible ...

what a good day for new(ish) music for exie!

first up, one of my all time fave bands- billy talent- rereleased their 1999 ska album watoosh! originally released under the name pezz

i have been pirating this album for ages, never thought i would ever have an official copy! it’s so so so good and i love that i can listen to it in a way that’s actually going to support the band. nita my beloved you’re mine 😭

next up, bad omens with the concrete jungle ost release. this is probably the coolest version of a deluxe album i’ve ever heard. i love the idea of reimagining the previously released album instead of just rereleasing it with a few bonus tracks. i will say; not every track on this album is my cup of tea. end of the day i prefer the original but there are some pretty cool moments on the ost! and having live recordings fucks too- i love hearing the differences between live vs studio versions
