CHAPTER 6: To Hold Onto
“ Sometimes the sins you haven’t committed are all you have left
to hold onto.”
— David Sedaris, When You Are Engulfed in Flames
“Rayla!” Wind whittled uselessly away at the stones, chipping off so little Callum couldn’t see any of it even with the light from his staff. Nor could his spells find any crevice or cranny not blocked by the stone wall that had previously been the ceiling, his breath spells bounding back and blowing his hair into his eyes. But even drawing water from the moss and sending it forwards just left dripping, unworn down rocks in his wake. Callum turned on his heel in frustration, pacing the length of their section of tunnel once. Another path turned off on the right, next to where the boulder wall stood.
“Can’t you do something?” Callum demanded. “Don’t you have nature magic?”
The boy rubbed the back of his neck. “Uh, plants are more my specialty—”
