Am I the only one who finds the attempt at commentary on like, 90s comic book racism and homophobia in dc: yj to feel very hypocritical? Like, you try and make this point, yet Empress, a notable, well liked woc is entirely excluded from the story, except for the one panel where she shows up with the VILLAINS? Seriously, why choose to bring back Cissie over her?
Also, this comic seems to place the blame for all the "problematic" stuff from the og run on the characters themselves and like. While I register young justice was far from perfect, I don't think this story resolves any of the actual problems I had.
If you want to make a point about comic book nostalgia letting us turn a blind eye to racism and homophobia, or argue that racist and homophobic fans look back fondly to the 90s because it was Like That, then why not tell a story focusing on the other characters?
Why not tell a story about Anita, and have the other characters apologize to her instead of cassie? She was written out and forgotten more than Cissie ever was. Why not tell a story revamping the new members from Bendis's run? Sure, I wasn't a fan of it, but jinny hex (who is queer!!) and teen Lantern had a lot of potential. Wouldn't a story where these 3 need to track down the core 4 have done so much more for that message? Made the point feel more genuine?
