As someone who knows the last of us part ii forward and backwards, inward and outward, would you say the remastered version is worth buying? I’m still on the fence.
Aw thanks haha, and I would say yes! Especially because it’s just a $10 upgrade. The skins are really fun to swap around, No Return is a fun new mode, the photomode upgrades are very nice, and just playing the game in 4k resolution is so 🤌 it’s so crispy and nice looking. My favorite feature so far though was the Directors commentary that can play during the cinematic cutscenes. I loved the insight from everyone. So I’d say yes and recommend a playthrough with that!

If you still make gifsets, would you ever consider making one comparing the new 4k restoration of Cinderella to the previous remaster? I love how much detail they've restored to this beautiful movie, even if the differences are only small ones <3
Hi there! Thank you so much for expressing an interest in my gifs, I really appreciate it! Unfortunately, I think I've kicked the bucket when it comes to creating content on here, but if I ever do return to gif making, I'll be sure to make a comparison chart! In the meantime, here are some screenshots:

Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition is arriving early next year. The news was accidentally posted early to the Xbox store and was even briefly available to play (albeit in unfinished form) on Ubisoft Plus.
According to its now-deleted Xbox Store page (which was shared by Wario64 on X), the 2003 adventure will now feature 4K graphics and 60 FPS with improvements to controls and audio. It will also feature auto-save and cross-save functionality. Here’s the full blurb:

"As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Beyond Good & Evil, we're excited to share that the official launch is set for early 2024, and we look forward to sharing more with you in the new year," Ubisoft wrote in the statement.
Beyond Good & Evil originally launched for PlayStation 2, Xbox, PC, and GameCube in 2003. It stars Jade, a reporter and fighter who joins a resistance movement to uncover a conspiracy on an alien planet. Gameplay involves taking on enemies in martial arts melee combat while using Jade's camera to take photos of clues and evidence while solving puzzles. The cult classic received its first big remaster in 2011 in the form of an HD upgrade, while its long-lost sequel, Beyond Good and Evil 2, has seemingly been in development limbo since its formal reveal at E3 2017.
Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition is expected to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.

I’m very impress of your artwork but how are you able to do this type of art work without taking up any memory space on your computer??
Thanks. I'm not sure what you mean, they are art done on PC so of course they take up space. These days as I'm remastering and updating older art to be higher resolution for prints many of them are 1-2gig per image. My current art archive is getting close to 1TB in size.
If you mean RAM, I've only ever run into problems with some animations when I forgot to shrink from 4k to smaller size.

It's the time of year for the annual viewing of Morozko (1964)!
The only movie bold enough to feature Santa Claus stopping an attempted suicide, Baba Yaga attacking a man with Ents, and a tiny mushroom wizard turning a man into a bear-man for not thanking him for giving him a bow and arrows. There is also singing. And people laughing at a woman trying to wrestle geese in a bog. Sometimes a movie just SCREAMS late November.
You probably know it from the MST3K episode, "Jack Frost"
youtube
Here is a fan subbed version of the full movie (either remastered or just taken from a print that was stored properly. And even this upload is 10+ years old. There is an even nicer DVD transfer on YouTube, without subs. Check it out if you want to be weirded out by a movie from 1964 looking like it was shot yesterday. Even crap film stock captures raw images at like 4K+. You just have to light it with miniature suns)

Idk if you can do this at this point in time but do you think you could get screenshots of Metroid Other M for the wii? I feel like the bottle ship in its is so neat with it’s different simulated areas and hologram generators! Also follow up question, can you put more of your high res burial at sea 1 and 2 screen shots on you artstation page? Pretty please with sprinkles? Thanks again for all the gorgeous pics! 💕
Well, if you're promising sprinkles, how can i say no? :D As of tonight, they're up on my Artstation page! https://www.artstation.com/artwork/PXa541 I appreciate you still enjoying them, even after all this time. :) Unfortunately, i seem to have lost (deleted?) some of the higher res versions of some of the shots, but there are a handful of 4k ones in the gallery.
As for Other M, i probably won't get around to it as i'm so behind on playing and screenshotting games, but i'll keep the idea on the back burner for sure. Don't know if it's any consolation, but i do intend to do a screenshot run of Metroid Dread (and maybe even grab a few of Prime Remastered!).

Need some insight from someone who has either a decent understanding of color theory / film trends of the 90s and very early 2000s and/or computer animation from the same period.
I was perusing Reddit while I waited for my normal Friday meeting with my boss and stumbled across this post, itself a screenshot of an argument on Twitter concerning the UHD 4K remasters of Lord of the Rings. (So here we are on Tumblr, talking about Reddit talking about Twitter. Thanks internet.)
To save you a click (and because I'm really only interested in the comparison and not the pointless argument) here's a crop of just the side-by-side comparison. Original DVD releases are on the left, with the remaster on the right.
Tumblr media
As you can see, in the course of making the remaster they've elected to dye the entire movie that particular shade of "Late Harry Potter Movie Puke Green" that we all know and... have opinions about.
I'm not sure about the second picture (the statue) but I think the shot of Rivendell is taken from Fellowship, which was released in 2001. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like CGI in the 90s and very early 2000s often had this bright, hazy look to it. Unfortunately the only other examples that came to mind immediately were Jurassic Park (1993) and Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I first I thought it was maybe because the latter two films utilized Industrial Light & Magic, but then I started looking elsewhere:
Dragonheart (1996)
Tumblr media
My apologies for pulling this one out of our collective memory hole, but ... Disney's Dinosaur (2000)
Tumblr media
Well, surely it's because of the examples have been dinosaurs, dinosaur-like aliens, and dragons, right? But it can be seen to a lesser degree in other examples.
The body horror thumb abominations from Spy Kids (2001) for example:
Tumblr media
And the animals in Jumanji (1995)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I get that these are all daytime shots, but I swear even in nighttime shots the CGI is brighter. (I don't have an example for this one).
Can someone with a better understanding of color and/or CGI explain to me what it is that I'm detecting? Is it just the uncanny valley? Is it something to do with the limitations around lighting CGI models from that period? Is it just me? I've had this theory for a while but I can't put my finger on what exactly I'm detecting.

Playing Classic Games in HD Shouldn’t Be a Crime
Tumblr media
In the realm of video games, there exists a tapestry woven from threads of innovation and nostalgia. One such golden thread is ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’, a game released in 1998 for Nintendo 64 that set new standards in the adventure genre. It introduced us to a three-dimensional Hyrule full of mystery, danger, and intrigue — all to be solved and resolved by our hero Link as he wielded his trusty Master Sword against evil forces.
The Nintendo 3DS version, which came out in 2011, enhanced this masterpiece even further by adding sharp visuals through its enhanced graphics and improved controls optimized for the handheld console. Now, thanks to dedicated gamers and technological advancements, the 3DS version of ‘Ocarina of Time’ can now be experienced in all its glory on personal computers via emulation software.
Emulators allow players to run console or arcade games on their PC or mobile device. For example, if you wanted to relive your childhood memories playing SNES classics like Super Mario World but don’t have access to that system anymore, you could download an emulator onto your PC and play those same games without needing the actual hardware. Emulating ‘Ocarina of Time’ on PC opens up possibilities beyond what was originally available on either the N64 or 3DS platforms.
These enhancements include upscaled textures and shaders to give the game a crisp, modern look while still retaining its original art style. Think of it as applying a fresh coat of paint to a timeless piece of artwork; it enhances the overall experience without compromising its essence.
To put into perspective just how much of a difference these modifications make, consider that the native resolution of the Nintendo 3DS version of ‘Ocarina of Time’ is only 400x240 pixels. By comparison, most modern PC monitors support resolutions well above Full HD (1080p), with many supporting Ultra HD (4K) resolution. The leading texture pack project for Ocarina of Time 3D brings the internal resolution of the emulated game up to these lofty heights, while adding shader support via ReShade post-processing effects.
As mentioned before, emulators allow users to play console games on their computers. However, in order to do so legally, one must first obtain a ROM of the game they wish to play — which can prove challenging due to copyright laws surrounding intellectual property. This is where things become murky; downloading a ROM of a game you already own isn’t necessarily illegal, but distributing said ROMs certainly is. So while this option may seem appealing to some, it’s important to understand the complexities involved before diving headfirst into the world of PC emulation. The average user will bear no responsibility for a ROM downloaded from an online repository, but if the same user were to acquire the ROM via torrent file sharing, there is the very real possibility that they will receive a strongly worded warning letter from their Internet Service Provider, or possibly worse.
If you choose to proceed with caution and respect both the developer’s wishes and the specific (and well litigated) limits imposed by copyright law, however, you will be rewarded with an unparalleled gaming experience. Using texture packs and emulator upscaling, these games can often look better than ever before, surpassing even the official HD remasters released for subsequent systems.
In the case of Ocarina, every leaf on every tree, every crack in the stone walls, and every stitch in Link’s green tunic comes alive with newfound clarity and detail. It’s almost as though time itself has stood still since 1998, allowing us to revisit Hyrule in ways we never thought possible.
When compared directly side-by-side-by-side, the differences between the three versions of Ocarina of Time are easy to see. While the original hardware undoubtedly holds a special place in our hearts, there is something truly magical about seeing this iconic title running at the native resolution of a modern PC. The combination of increased performance, higher frame rates, and expanded color palettes makes for a far more immersive and enjoyable journey through the land of Hyrule than was ever achievable when playing on the Nintendo 3DS.
In conclusion, despite the legal gray areas surrounding the use of ROMs, there is little doubt that using a PC emulator to play games like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is worth the effort. Whether you are seeking to relive fond childhood memories or simply want to discover what all the fuss was about back in 1998, emulating with texture packs on PC provides an unrivaled opportunity to experience these timeless classics in a whole new light. Just remember to exercise caution when acquiring your ROM, and always respect the wishes of the developers who poured their souls into creating all of our beloved classic games.
