It wasn’t until we came to record our first album, Showbiz, that I got back into piano. We were working on a song called “Sunburn,” which is kind of a strummy guitar song. It sounded a bit weak, and since it was one of my favorite songs, I wanted to make it sound good. So that was when John Leckie, our producer, had this idea to work out the guitar part on the piano.

That was the first time I played piano in years it seems, and I had to spend two or three days just practicing “Sunburn,” which is a pretty simple part. When we recorded it, it sounded a bit like a Philip Glass film soundtrack. I think at that point I decided I’d get back into piano again.

From that point on, I went in the opposite direction and started intensively working on piano and the guitar became more just for the live thing. I’d say 70 to 80 percent of the songs I’ve written since then have been written on piano. Even though live, I play some of them on guitar. Even a song like “Stockholm Syndrome” was written on piano.

I find it easy to find interesting chords on the piano. Especially because on a lot of stuff we do, the guitar and bass are harmonising; I’m not just playing power chords and Chris [Wolstenholme, bassist] isn’t just playing root notes.

#Ranger Gathering 2023 is coming this June!

What is this?

Our very own Ranger Gathering is an event running during June. Every day has its own prompt which you’re free to respond to in whichever way possible, relating to Ranger’s Apprentice, The Early Years, The Royal Ranger and/or Brotherband.

Check out last year’s stuff here!

How does it work?

The prompts are being released early for those who wish to begin chipping away at some of them before June comes around. This is mostly for those who want to do as many as possible and would like to avoid burnout or may be busy in June, but either way, no one is obliged to do every or any prompt. We’re just here to have fun!

This prompt challenge is not just about making fanart or fanfic, however. You can post about whatever has been inspired by the prompt. This could be playlists, moodboards, memes, analysis, quotes, literally anything you have your heart set on. You are also free to talk about your headcanons, AUs and OCs if you want to.

If you wish to take part, tag your post with #ranger gathering 2023 so we can all find it! You may also choose to post on other platforms, just know that it might not be as monitored as here.

Other than that, there’s no real rules. You can do as many or as little of the prompts as you want. You can post wips or polished works, short or long word counts, lil doodles :’)) and rendered art, one song or a playlist etc.

I would just urge you to know your limits and your workflow and work accordingly. Burnout is brutal and pumping stuff out is not gonna be worth it. In the case of you really want to finish your work, you can just do it later it’s 100% okay 💖🍵

A little headcanon that Halt called Will "son" mostly because he never lived to have Pritchard call him that.

He sort of knew that Pritchard saw him as someone more than just a kid he found and taught for a while. But Pritchard never called him "son".

Mostly because he was aware of Halt’s trauma and issues so he didn’t want to push him. If they had gotten more time together he would totally call Halt that... but he didn’t.

And Halt wasn’t going to do the same. And despite his trauma and issues he called Will "son" as soon as he himself realized that’s who Will is to him...

HC that Dick spent most of his early years just following Bruce wherever he went- like he goes on all business trips to foreign countries and does his schoolwork (he’s homeschooled/private tutoring til at least high school) in Bruce’s office. He’s occasionally seen doing increasingly ridiculous stunts in the background of Bruce’s zoom calls. One time B just left the room and put a 10 year old Dick in charge for the rest of the meeting. The kid closed a business deal, declared a corporate wide policy for paid birthdays off and organized a bring your dog to work day. When meetings become too boring B puts himself on mute and plays catch with Dick until someone actually has something worth saying. And everyone remembers but it’s taboo to bring up that time Bruce got (accidentally) blasted in the face with a football while discussing budget cuts

i haven't read the early years but I'm assuming when Duncan first met Halt he was like "wait, aren't you the prince-" and then Halt smacked his hand over his mouth so he doesn't get outed

Piano was the first instrument I really played. I didn’t have any lessons, and though I tinkered with it since I was five, I didn’t really get interested until I was ten or 11. My dad used to play a lot of blues records, Ray Charles, and Stevie Wonder.

Ray Charles was the one that stuck out; I used to work on my left hand to “What’d I Say” in sort of this boogie-woogie style. I spent ages working that out, practicing the left hand doing one thing and trying to do chords with the right hand.

I went into a talent contest and played a solo version of that piece and actually won the contest. My older brother forced me into this talent contest and, though I was too nervous to do it, I did it anyway. It made me want to get out there and get some gigs and get in a band. When I first got into a band when I was about 13 or 14, I didn’t play piano for about six years because I just got so into the guitar.
