I love horror as much as the next person, but I've been on a really big fantasy kick lately. Do you have any recommendations for (preferably full-cast) fantasy audio dramas?
i'll be honest anon, i'm so picky about my podcasts i've only ever finished 6 shows.
i've never stepped out of my comfortable horror bubbles, but i have an extensive to-listen list i can pull some recs for you, from the podcast fandom itself!
DND podcasts tend to be great if you're looking for full-cast and lore based fantasy, so consider dice shame (if you already like malevolent), the adventure zone and dames and dragons!!
if your itch is more for proper audio dramas, consider caravan, the once and future nerd, greater boston and radio:outcast
again, i havent actually listened to any of these, but i hope youll like them, happy listening :)

Sept 13: 2013 Things Billy Does Unironically
Tumblr media
Is Gangnam Style technically from 2012? Yes. But it was still popular enough in 2013 that Billy would absolutely still be referencing it.

Randomly recommending a great podcast here, if you like fantasy and sort of D&D kind of stories (with a bit of queerness sprinkled on top of course lol) you should really listen to “The Once and Future Nerd” just saying

Yllowyyn realizing the elves are fascists who extract wealth by oppressing and slaughtering "lesser" races and then rescuing a baby and waitress from summary execution, getting almost shot in the heart, and then letting himself get stuffed in a barrel blindfolded without even basic directions on which way shore is if he doesn't want to drown to make up for the crime of his privilege is really the minimum ally behavior

Lingthusiasm Episode 80: Word Magic
The magical kind of spell and the written kind of spell are historically linked. This reflects how saying a word can change the state of the world, both in terms of fictional magic spells that set things on fire or make them invisible, and in terms of the real-world linguistic concept of performative utterances, which let us agree to contracts, place bets, establish names, and otherwise alter the fabric of our relationships.
In this episode, your hosts Gretchen McCulloch and Lauren Gawne get enthusiastic about word magic! We talk about how the word magic systems are set up differently in three recent fantasy books we like: Babel by R.F. Kuang, Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, and the Scholomance series by Naomi Novik. We also talk about linguistic performatives: why saying “I do” in a movie doesn’t make you married, aka Felicity Conditions, aka an excellent drag name; performativity as applied to gender (yup, Judith Butler got it from linguistics); the “hereby” test; and how technology changes what counts as a performative.

Announcements:  People often ask us to recommend interesting books about linguistics that don't assume prior knowledge of linguistics, so we've come up with a list of 12 books that we personally recommend, including both nonfiction and fiction books with linguistically interesting elements! Get this list of our top 12 linguistics books by signing up for our free email list. Email subscribers get an email once a month when there's a new episode of Lingthusiasm, and this month existing subscribers will see a link to our linguistics books list! If you find this any time in the future, you'll get the books list in the confirmation email after you sign up.  In this month’s bonus episode, we get excited about the results of the 2022 Lingthusiasm Survey. We talk about synesthesia fomo, whether people respond differently to kiki/bouba depending on whether they're aware of them as a meme, complicating the "where is a frown?" map, the plural of emoji, and more! Plus, we mentioned swearing in this episode? Yeah, we’ve got bonus episodes about that too.  Join us on Patreon now to get access to this and 70+ other bonus episodes, as well as access to the Lingthusiasm Discord server where you can chat with other language nerds! Do you have any recommendations for fantasy audiodramas? Preferably with full-cast, but no worries if not :)
hello anon! i've got a few, some of which i can provide first-hand reviews for and some of which have been recommended by friends and colleagues ✨ a quick note that while most of these are audio-dramas, a few are actual-play podcasts, so feel free to skip those if you're not into that
(recommendations below the cut!)
The Penumbra Podcast (in particular, the second citadel storyline)
While the Juno storyline for TPP is also excellent, if you're looking for fantasy vibes, the second citadel storyline is the way to go! It takes place in a high-fantasy-esque world with knights, castles, magic, non-human creatures, and some very fun characters who I thoroughly enjoyed! Full cast, audio drama, high fantasy
Rusty Quill Gaming Podcast
This is another high-fantasy-esque world, which takes place in London circa 18-something something. The two caveats with this one are that it's 1) an actual play podcast and 2) a touch difficult to get in to, so I would recommend starting on the season one recap (between episodes 53 and 54) and then going back and starting on Bertie's sidequest (between episodes 39 and 40) and then listening chronologically from there. The podcast loosely revolves around this robotic humanoid machine called the Simulacrum that the party thinks is wrapped up in something sinister happening. It's very well done, though the NPCs being named after Real Life Historical Figures means that my blorbo for a while was Oscar Wilde (RPG character) lmao. So it goes. Full cast, actual play, low fantasy
Hello from the Hallowoods
This one isn't strictly fantasy, but the vibes are similar enough that I feel confident including it on this list! The podcast is told from the perspective of a singular entity, so it's not quite full cast, but there's still a wide variety of characters who we hear from and have dialogue from. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, where black rain has fallen and created a wide variety of creatures/affected humans in a wide variety of ways. There are also a lot of humans living in dreaming boxes, where they live solely in their own dreams. I'd describe the genre as soft horror, and the cast is comprised almost entirely of queer characters. Singular narrator who voices many characters, audio drama, soft horror
And then some recommendations from friends!
Audio Dramas
Unseen - Urban fantasy, stories about individual characters
Alba Salix - High fantasy about a royal physician, full cast
Magic Tavern - Comedy improv high fantasy about a modern day guy getting transported into a magical kingdom, full cast
Once and Future Nerd - A group of teenagers get transported to a fantasy setting, audio drama, full cast
Monstrous Agonies - Supernatural urban fantasy, supernatural styles help line
Care and Feeding of Werewolves - Supernatural urban fantasy, supernatural styled doctor
Silt Verses - Follows two people, Carpenter and Faulkner, who worship an outlawed god and are traveling along a river in a pilgrimage
The Bright Sessions - Dr. Bright provides therapy for the strange and unusual
Night Shift - Urban fantasy, features magical anomalies
Mistholme Museum of Mystery, Morbidity, and Mortality - singular narrator (the audio tour guide) walks you through the exhibits of a strange museum (and more!)
Actual Plays
Dice Shame - Fantasy RPG
The Adventure Zone, Balance and Amnesty arcs - Fantasy RPG
Dark Dice - Originally an actual play, now edited to be more similar to an audio drama, full cast
Transplanar - Dark fantasy RPG

Got coaxed into watching the D&D movie today (after listening to Inn Between last week no less) and while it was fun I genuinely think Inn Between is the better adaptation. Keep up the great work.
You know, I find this very interesting. I hope you don't mind if I wax a little poetic.
First off, thank you. I also had a lot of fun watching the D&D movie and being compared to it and called better is an honor. That's so kind.
I think what's giving me pause here is calling Inn Between an adaptation. Not that my intention matters all that much, the author is dead, etc., but adaptation was never really my intention. If you mean that it fits better within what a D&D game is or follows the feeling of playing better, then sure, I'll accept that.
But like, the D&D framework for me was always just that, a framework. Inn Between has always been an exploration of character development in a confined space. I just use a confined space with kind of a complex setup, which is to say a fictional D&D game. It's a series of bottle episodes, and the bottle comes with lore. That's why the things that happen outside of the inn are up for interpretation, because I want it to be familiar and non-distracting as well as a hook to hang the imagination on.
All this to say, it's hard to compare a rollicking adventure with familiar elements and names (the D&D movie) to a character study podcast that takes place almost exclusively in one room. At least we let people be gay here (because we don't have funding to lose if 3/5 main characters are trans).
By the way anon, and anyone else reading this, if you liked Inn Between and the D&D movie, audio drama podcasts have a lot to offer you! I'm a big fan of The Ordinary Epic, basically a cousin show of ours that tells parallel stories of a D&D game and its players. There's also Omen | A Fantasy Audio Drama, which is based on a Pathfinder game and is a swashbuckling good time; Absolutely No Adventures, a show about a chosen one who would really rather not, thank you; The Once and Future Nerd, a sweeping high fantasy about three Pennsylvania teens getting caught up in political and cosmic chaos; and Sidequesting, a lighthearted fantasy adventure about avoiding the main plot. Check these out if you thought the movie was good, but could be gayer.
Thank you again, anon. It matters to tell good stories and I'm glad mine are good.

Order of the Stick fans, you should give podcasts a shot. In particular, I think you'd really enjoy The Once and Future Nerd, which starts out as a seemingly-average portal fantasy but later on interrogates, subverts, and examines a lot of tropes found in fantasy. And is just generally a really good story.
Once and Future Nerd fans, you should give webcomics a shot. In particular, I think you'd really enjoy The Order of the Stuck, which starts out as a seemingly-average parody of DND campaigns, using a lot of 2000s humor, but later on interrogates, subverts, and examines a lot of tropes found in fantasy. And is just generally a really good story.

5!!!
There are so many good audio drama tropes. Fighting capitalism in space (What Will Be Here, Moonbase Theta Out, Seren, Starship Iris, We Fix Space Junk, Burst), narrators breaking the fourth wall to little pieces (The Vanishing Act, Starfall, the Once and Future Nerd, Greater Boston, Small Victories), fake true crime (Arden, When Angels Visit Armadillo, Passenger List, Blackwood, Olive Hill, This Sounds Serious, Morland P.I., Murder at Camp Jesus if you squint), fictional advice shows (Monstrous Agonies, Kaleidotrope, Solutions to Problems, the Godshead Incidental).
But my favorite one is almost more of a coincidence than a trope, it's just showed up three times. And it's people who are sexually attracted to plants. Why did this happen three times. Why is this the funniest thing the writers could think of. Why are they right.
So there you have it, Ethics Town Podcast. Plants Romance.
(It's The Adventure Zone, Life with Althaar, and the Land Whale Murders btw.)
