Ectoberhaunt 2023: Science VS Magic

Dear Phandom new and old, sorry for the delay but this here is our 2023 theme and prompt list! Once again we've changed it up a little to make it a little easier on all of us, and to invite fun and mayhem Phandom wide! Prompts are once again Monday-Friday, with Friday being singular prompts, and weekends being (mostly) free as catch up days. The only real change is our new 'isekai weekend' on the 21st and 22nd, with two different sub prompts for the days. Isekai is a subgenre of anime in which a character ends up in a different place or world all together. It literally translates to 'otherworld'! The two prompts for this weekend are 'past prompt', where we want to see the Phandom use a prompt from either of our previous calendars. The other is 'portal shenanigans'. as it’s the end of gamingmas i just want to extend a massive thank you to not only dan and phil, but everyone in this phandom who has made this such a good few weeks. it’s been such a joy seeing so many people engaging with dnp content and also the incredibly talented people who have also contributed! i feel very proud to be a part of this phandom, full of artists, gifers, comedians, editors, writers and so much more.

We need to talk, Pham. Stop shaming Christine Daaé.

I have seen this behavior consistently for the 30+ years I have been a Phan. What's worse is that I see A LOT of it from grown women. I see posts calling her foolish for leaving Erik. Slut shaming her or calling her a gold digger. Calling her stupid, weak, or unworthy because a "real woman" (presumably the women posting these absurd notions 🙄) would have loved him better and been worthy of his awesome talent and capacity for love. 😳🤮

It's disturbing, disheartening, and disgusting. And it needs to stop.

First off, none of these characters are real, so perhaps let's take things a little less seriously in general. It's a fictional story. I get it: we all love it, and probably love the Phantom's character. That's fine....I've made a 20+ year career dressing as the dude, for crying out loud. 🤣 Maybe we all identify with Erik/The Phantom to some degree. Regardless of the version of the story, if the actors or authors do their job well, we *should* feel pity and compassion for him. But feeling compassion and completely ignoring the character's dangerous and abusive behavior are two very different things. It has the potential for some severe consequences in the real world.

By shaming Christine for leaving Erik at the end, you are potentially telling young people that staying in abusive relationships is the right thing. You make them think that if their significant other is talented, misunderstood, been abused themselves etc, then they should stay and love them into a healthy relationship. That if they just love their abusive SO harder, sacrifice themselves a little more or for a little longer, or keep putting that person's needs above their own, that the relationship will suddenly become this wonderful, euphoric experience. It won't. As a survivor of longtime abusive myself, I can tell you from experience: it doesn't happen that way.

Celebrate healthy relationships and enforcing healthy boundaries. Stop shaming Christine for fighting for and winning her life and saving the man she loves.

And please stop calling this a romance. It's the antithesis of romance.

I am sick of members of this Phandom completely ignoring Erik/The Phantom's behavior to justify their blind adoration. Erik is an abusive and dangerous character, and extremely toxic. He lies to and manipulates Christine using her trauma from her deceased father. He kidnaps her, multiple times. Threatens her and her colleagues. He extorts hundreds of thousands from the business managers. He endangers dozens of people with the chandelier crash, and effectively holds hundreds hostage for months or years at a time with his reign of terror at the Opera.

Then there are the murders. Several of them. Probably been at that for awhile so we can assume it's far more than the two we see in the show. We don't know his actual body count, but we do know he's adept and comfortable taking human life.

And yet, I see some mature phans out here completely ignoring all those things and still shaming Christine for leaving him. Why? Because he's "sexy" (author's note: PLEASE go re-read Leroux. Please). And he's talented. And has so much love to give. And is misunderstood. And society was terrible to him...so it's all fine. 😳🤮 She should have just stayed and loved him like he deserves to be loved. 🙄

Recently I saw a post shaming Christine and the justification was that Raoul was so much worse. He isn't. Is he a perfect character? No, not at all. Does he make mistakes and try to use Christine? In some versions, yes. Does he run around extorting, manipulating, threatening, and killing others? Also no.

Pleasw don't ever use LND!Raoul's character assassination as some kind of justification, because he's still the most sane, normal human being in that show, and Erik is still 1,000 times worse than Raoul in LND. Also, using LND as justification for anything makes for a very weak and uninformed argument.

"Hurt people hurt people." Ever heard that phrase? Abused people sometimes abuse others, especially if they haven't done the work to heal themselves. Their previous abuse does NOT entitle them to abuse others. That is always a deliberate choice and those choices have consequences. The dangerous, disgusting rhetoric I see in the Phantom community basically excuses toxic behavior because Erik was previously abused and nothing is his fault. That is simply not true. Those that abused me were previously abused. Didn't make my abuse hurt any less. And I made the choice to do the work so that the abuse stopped with me. Previous trauma is a reason for the behavior, but it is NEVER, ever an excuse.

And don't let the fact the dude can sing or that he's a snappy dresser blind you to his toxicity.

We can all enjoy the Phantom character's complexity and love him, while still acknowledging his flaws and holding him accountable for his deeply inappropriate choices.

We talk a lot more these days about trauma, toxicity, and self care. And yet, as a community, we still shame the character of Christine Daaé for doing the healthy, correct thing. The ONLY thing. And in doing so, we set a disturbing precedent for our young or vulnerable Phans who now might think that staying in toxic relationships in the real world is okay.

Please do better, Phandom.

Today 20 years ago, Danny Phantom aired on Nickelodeon on April 3rd after the 2004 Kids Choice Awards..

Happy 20 years of the Ghost boy and his silly friends! One of my favorite shows of all time! As an introverted kid with low self-esteem, I related heavily to Danny and his struggles. He always felt human to me and I enjoyed drawing him all the time! Seeing that there are other people who are just as passionate about this show as I am makes me feel so overjoyed!

Aside from the stupid ship war between Valerie and Sam ending up with Danny and the weirdos who ship the most bizarre shit on earth.. the DP Phandom has to be one of the best fandoms I’ve ever been in! (Next to MLAATR) The amount of talented artists and writers sharing their masterpieces on the internet has always amazed me! I swear most of the DP fans I’ve interacted with are the most polite and chill people ever. I’m so grateful for all my mutuals and friends. Thank you all for being there for me and for understanding me!

Nobody, not even anyone irl, will ever understand how much I fucking love this show. Idgaf about the creator being problematic or if it has flaws/it didn’t age well. I love Danny Phantom to bits and pieces.. (just so yk I don’t support Butch lol)

I've been a part of the phandom since I was fourteen back in 2012, but i've only recently deviated from my lurker ways and started being active in this community on tumblr. which I have been enjoying immensely! I'm super confused about something however, and so i'm making a post about it. please help.

often when I see the word "parasocial" used among the dnp audience, I've noticed that it's used with really negative connotations. Or with the implication that having a parasocial relationship is inherently bad and terrible. today, for instance, I've seen the term parasocial likened directly to "creepy."

I'd like to ask why that is-what has led to the perception of a parasocial relationship in this fandom as one that is intrinsically invasive and creepy. And I'd like also to put forth my own thoughts on why I think it's unhelpful and incorrect that we use this term to be a near synonym for creepy.

first, a definition. I'm turning to Hank Green for this, as he succinctly sums up what a parasocial relationship is in this vlogbrothers video (a recommended watch). He says a parasocial relationship forms "when the parts of your brain that are designed to have a social relationship between you and another person are used to have a relationship with a person who does not know who you are or, sometimes, cannot know who you are... because they're Huckleberry Finn."

At its most basic, a parasocial relationship is a relationship between you and someone fictional or nonfictional who doesn't know who you are. Hank goes on to say, importantly! that parasocial relationships have been happening since the beginning of time. People have been fans of famous or talented people since time immemorial, people have cared for fictional people since the first stories were told among humans.

Similarly, in one of his Am I The Hole videos, Phil says that becoming obsessed with things is normal. "People hyperfixate on stuff. It's fine." We all do it.

In many ways, parasocial relationships are as natural as myriad other forms of human bonds. Humans can't help but connect to each other. To other living and even non-living things. Bonding and connecting and forming communities is what we do. And because of that, I think it's a disservice to oneself be ashamed of being in a parasocial relationship, or to use parasocial as a term to serve as a stand in for a disrespectful fan of someone. I think it fosters a sense of guilt where there shouldn't necessarily be any, especially if you as a viewer of Dan and Phil are respecting the boundaries they have set. You are doing something so normal! So human! You are finding support and comfort and empowerment and motivation and creativity and any number of other things from other people.

There is great joy and great good that can come from parasocial relationships. Obviously! Think of Phil's birthday stream, the feelings you experienced when the lights came on in the theater after TATINOF, all the laughs (among other things) Dan and Phil have gotten from our memes and art.

And it's important to consider the other side of this as well. Dan and Phil also have a parasocial relationship with us. It's different, of course, but they do think of us, make decisions because of us, without truly knowing us. At different points in time maybe they know the loudest of us, a few individuals, but for the most part they do not know who we are. They don't know who you are. But they do think about you. They think about what ties us together, our queerness, our beliefs about the world, the internet, our status as socially awkward and or mentally ill nerds etc. They think about how certain videos or projects or merch will be received. All creators are in a relationship with their audience. And it is often a parasocial one.

Basically i find myself exasperated with stumbling over the word 'parasocial' in this fandom. I want to have the information and know the truth and add my own thoughts! Maybe parasocial is used by other people elsewhere on the internet to mean something bad, but my thesis is this: it's not a bad word. It's a descriptor. And it's a normal thing. Those people are wrong. You shouldn't feel bad about being in a parasocial relationship with Dan and Phil! You should call that relationship what it is with pride! And do as much good with it as you can.

conclusion: talk to me about this! What is your perspective, what am I missing? let me know please. would be happy to talk about this with anyone.

Hello everyone! Today we have something very exciting to announce: the sign-ups for the Holiday 2023 Phandom Gift Exchange are open!

This event is a gift exchange where people create a phanwork for who they are assigned; you don’t know who will be creating your gift, but you can be assured that their talents will match up to your requests!

How to Sign Up

The grand majority of people participating will be gifting a phandom work to another, therefore, you all will be gifters. The person you will be gifting for will (probably) not also be the person gifting for you. On the form, you’ll choose what kind of gifts you'd like and genres/tropes/themes/etc. you enjoy. You’re also free to provide some more specific prompts. If you're just on tumblr, choose the tumblr group. If you're on twitter or on both platforms, choose the twitter or either option! Sign-ups to be a gifter will close Thursday, November 23rd at 11:59 PM.

"But wait," you say, "what about the betas?" Or maybe you didn't say that, but some may be wondering. Since the beginning of this event, we've been getting fewer and fewer beta sign-ups, and most gifters participating have not been choosing a beta from our directory, anyway. More Details

The gifting assignments will not be random. The admins (@husbants and @ttlmt) will be matching up each gifter with a partner based on the gifter’s self-identified skills and the partner’s likes and prompts.

There will be separate under-18 and 18-and-older groups. A gifter will only be considered to gift for people within their age group. A gifter will also only be considered to gift for people within whichever platform group they choose.

We will be communicating through Tumblr/Twitter DMs and email. There will also be a Discord (the link will be sent through email when assignments go out) and we’ll post updates and announcements there, too. Make sure your DMs are open, you’re checking this blog/the Twitter account, and you’re checking your email during the event!

When the gifters post their gifts on December 29th, they should tag both this account/the Twitter account and their partner on the post. This blog will reblog everyone in the Tumblr group’s posts. Our Twitter will retweet everyone in the Twitter group’s posts.

We’re really hoping this doesn’t happen, but if you are assigned to someone you have blocked or have any sort of issue with, contact one of the admins and we can switch around our own assignments or talk to someone signed up as a pinch-hitter and deal with it. Frostbite: - and with just one mighty punch the Great One claimed the crown!

Chief Frostbite gives the Far Frozen children some lesson in ghost zones history.

While I was making this I wondered why the Far Frozen people have a shrine with simple cave drawings as a place of worship for Danny. I mean if you worship someone/something you want to offer the best you can offer, so why didn't they made something better? We saw how Frostbite created a perfect copy of Danny made of ice within seconds, so it doesn't seem like it is a lack of artistic talent. I have some theories under the cut:

The Far Frozen people are big fans of Pablo Picasso and they took the quote, "It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child", at heart and have let their youngest members draw the heroics of Danny Phantom. This is their way to show the greatest honor.

The shrine is a prophecy the Far frozen have gotten hold of when their civilization was still young, like stone age period. So they preserved the shrine until the day Danny visits them. ( But this also means destiny exists and everything Clockwork told about that nothing is written in stone is questionable)

This theory is now a very confusing concept and I need to tell some background first: While I was searching for references I noticed that some of the drawings have Danny without the logo.

Since the episode "Memory Blank" Desiree presumably created a new reality/timeline where Danny always had a logo (if she is that powerful to have reality warping powers):

How did the Far Frozen know of a reality without a logo? Now comes the theory: We know that natural portals can be created which leads to different time periods while in the Ghost Zone. That means time flows not linear in the zone.

This reminded me of a concept in from the Elder Scrolls franchise, the Dragon Break or un-time. This is a phenomenon "that involves a splitting of the natural timeline which results in branching parallel realities where the same events occur differently, or not at all." With this penomenon stuff can also get sent into the future or something into the past. (The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim plot)

In terms of DP that means the events of "Memory Blank" did occur like we saw but it also did not occur like that, maybe Danny changed his outfit just like that without Sams doing. Everything is possible and not. That's why the Far Frozen have the knowledge of a reality which shall not exist.

In the shrine drawing Danny is also depicted without the battle suit, so they know of a reality where Danny defeated Pharia Dark without it:

Now then, why do they have simple cave drawings? Because of the non-linear nature of the Zone the news of the ghost kings defeat reached the area of the Far Frozen in their past but as Danny arrived their civilization already evolved in a modern state. For Danny it was just a few weeks/months between the events, but for the Far Frozen it was centuries or even millennia, thats also why they worship him like a god.

Like I said a very confusing concept.

Desiree could also just have super effective memory manipulation powers and did not create a new reality, and the nature of the ghost zone is just a mess, and the theory is wrong...

Oh boy, you're gonna wish you'd never asked 😆 Long post ahead

🎧 Vlad is a huge fan of 80s synth-pop and new wave. Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Smiths, Duran Duran, Tears For Fears, Pet Shop Boys, a-ha, and New Order, to name just a few.

🎵 On a similar (quarter) note, music from the late 70s and early 80s is still difficult for him to listen to because it reminds him of the years he was pining for Maddie, the accident, and being hospitalized. Mid-80s music and beyond, when he began to take his life back and build his wealth and power, is his "good old days" music.

🎹 Another music headcanon: In Familiar, I hinted at Vlad being a pianist. I think he'd look pretty hot playing a saxophone, maybe even a trumpet. And Martin Mull is a pretty good guitarist and singer, so Vlad also having those talents would be really cool. But I like to believe that Vlad plays the geekiest, dorkiest, nerdiest, most Slav-coded instrument of all: the accordion. Just imagine him torturing Danny and Sam and Tucker with polka music and ballads about cheese while on a camping trip. Maybe Wulf howling in agony from somewhere in the woods.

🧀 Yeah, he’s basically the negaverse equivalent of Weird Al.

👂 Vlad got his ear pierced in the mid-90s.

🔥 Despite being a fire specter ("having a fire core", to use the phandom terms), Vlad loves the cold. Winter is his favorite season, Christmas his favorite holiday. A bit of a spoiler for either chapter 13 or 14 of Familiar: Vlad is a superb ice skater.

💔 Besides his mother, Maddie was the only woman Vlad ever loved.

🐄 Vlad grew up the son of a poor Wisconsin dairy farmer. His mother was a first-generation Romanian* immigrant. He was the first member of his family to go to college, and on a full scholarship. He has no siblings. (*I may adapt Vlad’s nationality depending upon the story/art/situation, but generally I like to HC him as Romanian, which you can see on his backpack here in this AU.)

👊 Vlad was a victim of bullying in his teen years. Because of his first name and his ethnicity—not to mention his appearance and disposition: skinny, gangly, "ugly", shy, nerdy, poor—Halloween was always a miserable time for him: getting pelted with plastic vampire fangs in the hallways at school; cruel nicknames like "Count Vladislob" or "Vladis-louse"; racist remarks about his Romani mother; "Bleh bleh! I vant to suck your bluud!" It was awful.

✌️ Because he spent so many years being made to feel ashamed of his unusual name, when he became rich and successful after obtaining his ghost powers, he put his name and initial everywhere. V for Vlad.

🏈 Vlad got his love of Green Bay from his father. Apart from a shared surname, it was one of the only two (2) things he and his dad had in common.

🔧 Working on farm machinery like tractors and hay balers was the other. Vlad and his dad would often fix the farm equipment themselves rather than hire a mechanic—mostly out of necessity. Vlad is still pretty good with a monkey wrench, though in college his focus shifted from engineering to physics after meeting Jack and Maddie.

🚀 Vlad grew up in the sixties. Space race, the moon landing, the Cold War. Every kid his age had space fever. Vlad was no exception. Man it's honestly insane how much I've written and read in the last year and I'm loving it. Like who woulda thought it would take just traipsing into the Danny Phantom tag after seeing some rad crossover art (from STOVE) to get me writing again.

The DPxDC hyperfixation in particular is so strong. Like I just have SO many ideas and I love this crossover so much. I cannot stress enough too how much the like general positivity and encouragement from other people participating in the crossover (whether that be commenters on fics, people interacting with posts on Tumblr, or shouting ideas with friends over discord) has just kept me wanting to write more

I honestly didn't write a lot before getting sucked into the DP fandom. And when I started writing for the fandom I wasn't sure how much I'd stick with my projects or immerse myself in the phandom at large. I struggle with some mental health issues and finding the focus to write can be a chore at the best of times, let alone finding the motivation to keep a project going

Getting sucked into the phandom, and by association the DPxDC crossover crowd, has been amazing. Yall are so god damn talented and kind and encouraging. I can't always keep up with reading yalls amazing fics, and I can be bad at replying on Tumblr or to AO3 comments, but just know that like, I am rolling happily in every kind comment I get and I try to give back however much of that I can when I can.

I have so many more ideas I wanna write-- for DP and DPxDC (and maybe even DC-only stuff, though I consider myself more anchored in the phandom personally). I wish I had more time and energy to just go buckwild with it. I'm hoping to get a lot more done this Ectoberhaunt at least >:3c

......can we as a Phandom agree that "AI art bad" ? idk this fandom is so full of incredible talent and creativity, and a lot of the fan work is based on other fan work, the fans are basically feeding themselves here and the Phandom has survived for this long thanks to all the love for genuine artistic expression.... seeing AI "art" in the DP tag kind of shocks me? it seems like such an antithesis for all the Phandom stands for

The biggest encumbrance to me as an avid Erik x Meg shipper isn't the idea of Erik falling for someone other than Christine -- realistically I don't think it would take much for an isolated romantic man like Erik to fall head over heels for someone as beautiful and compassionate as Meg, especially if she fancied him back -- but instead it's the opposite. Why would someone self-possessed and sane as Meg (LND was character torture porn and I refuse to acknowledge the majority of it as canon) fall for a murderer? She was the one who found Piangi's strangled corpse. It would take some doing for her to witness that then become enamored of the man who committed that atrocity.

I know the Phandom likes to collectively forget Erik Did All That, but I don’t see Meg forgetting any time soon.

Yet the reason I ship them is the same reason I ship Christine and Raoul. To me, Christine and Erik are too much alike in all the wrong ways and they bring out and emphasize each other’s most troubling qualities: Christine's childlike fascination with Erik mixed up with her unprocessed grief from her father’s death makes Erik want to stay on that all-knowing, godlike pedestal to wow her, and it turns into him grooming her. Meanwhile, Christine feels she must remain the awed pupil, the child, and he only encourages her penchant for disappearing into her fantasy world and ignoring reality.

But although I think Raoul does buy into his savior role a little too much, he is a solid rock for Christine who also encourages her to take accountability for her own life and her own decisions. I honestly think he wants her to grow not just as a singer but as a person, to mature and live outside of herself and her fantasy life. He grounds her.

In my ideal scenario, that's what Meg could do for Erik. However, that can easily veer into the toxic trope of female characters functioning as caretakers and cheerleaders for the problematic male heavy with little else to do. Luckily my version of Meg wouldn't let any man, phantom or not, take center stage in her life. If he wants to be her partner in life, he can certainly come along for the ride; if not, maybe she broods awhile and always secretly carries a torch for him, but there's a whole world out there ready to embrace the talents of a smart, promising young dancer. She wouldn’t let it crush her spirit.

And now I'm back where I started: how does someone like that fall in love with a murderer in the first place? I guess her deep compassion once she learns about what he's been through could lead her to think he deserves a fresh start and a second chance. After all, isn't that what the audience wants for Erik at the end of the day? So why not a sweetie like Meg?

Controversial take, being nice to people around you requires getting rid of black and white thinking. And transphobia is creeping everywhere, even if people don't notice it. Controversial (?) phan take: I love that the phandom got a tad smaller over the years, I feel like the space HERE on Tumblr got way nicer and you peeps are so well spoken and talented and smart. And way kinder and supportive to phanfic writers too!

Okay so I have seen stuff like this happen in other fandoms too, like with mcr fans who hated anyone calling Gerard Way anything but cis (despite him having said he relates more to "women and trans people" than to masculinity etc) and they would purposefully go look at blogs that talked about G this way to pick a fight and act like they have the moral high ground. I will not be surprised if similar things happen here but lesser people in the fandom on tumblr does help it somewhat, the situation isn't that bad yet and that's why we should make sure we don't let it get worse by ceding ground to such arguments. We don't want all the dormant stalkers just turning their stalking habits towards the other fans now, which is happening on twitter with so many fandoms and even here on tumblr

Also I agree with the Tumblr fandom thing! I really think we got a chance to build it up from the ground again with fewer active members at the time of dnpgames return, and that has helped us be able to curate a good and supportive space! I love this little corner of the internet and I hope we are all able to keep it this way 🌸

Thanks anon! Definitely any place or person that's filled with hate towards fic writers over fictional shit is a red flag, it never stops with one delete fic or one deleted YouTube video, that's an angry horde waiting to sanitise everything you do
