Arrah's Favorite Shows. (All-star edition.)

This year is the year of music on my blog. Because I literally post only about music. Well just to change that. Today I will tell you about my unsolicited list of my favorite TV shows. A.K.A. the greatest shows of all time. 

Posting about ranking or lists is not a very easy task. It needs a lot of time and effort especially for a film/TV show. And motion pictures are a very broad category. There’re a lot of genres out there and it’s hard to rank them because there are a lot of factors for different categories to consider. Hence the simplicity of this list. It’s not a rank but just a list of my favorite shows.

The only factor that I consider in making this list is: Likeliness. Just as simple as: ‘How much I like them’. Which means how often I did a rewatch on them, how often I tweet about them, how often I searched for the hashtag just to see what the public’s opinion about it. In short, how obsessed I am. This is not to offend the tv show bros.™  out there… So if you didn’t see Game of Thrones on the list, that doesn’t mean that GoT is not a great show, in fact I like it so much that I am willing to take someone's life just for the last season to be changed. But hey, this is what I want. If you don’t agree then you can make your own Greatest-Show-of-all-time list.This is my attempt of trying to make this brief. For I am planning to make a separate, more in-depth review of some of the shows listed below. *take a deep breath* *sigh* Let’s go.

Modern Family.

Is there anything more I need to say? I think this was the peak of television. A real comedy show where you just love each character equally. Even though there are some problematic things about it. It is not comparable to what other problematic things other shows have done. And this is the real Family Show. They love each other down, whether they're on a roll or off-cam. And that reflects on the show. I think that’s why it’s so genuine and warm. 

I’ve decided to make a separate post about this show because it's so good it needs full attention.

Favorite Character? Gloria and Alex. What do I hate about it? Homophobic and Racist remarks from Jay, Phil-Claire’s relationship towards Alex, Hailey’s demise and Manny’s shadowed character. Favorite Episode? All of it. There’s no episode where I didn’t chuckle. There are also a lot of times that I even cry and that’s saying something.

Parks and Recreation

I was a ‘The Office’ girl down!!! I thought it was the best thing until I watched Parks and Recreation. Fuck I even bought a Parks and Rec DVD set. It has one of the best well-written couples on Television. I’m looking at you, Leslie, and Ben. And you know me. I love a strong, independent protagonist. It is so well written that each character's progress is just unbelievably perfect. 

Favorite Character? Leslie. April. Donna. What I hate about it? Leslie losing the election. Which is just more of me being a sore loser. I don’t want my girl losing you know. Chris Taeger. Saperstein Twins and Bobby Newport. Favorite Episode? The Fight, especially one of the scenes where they were being interviewed while drunk. If you don’t have a recollection of this episode it is the release of Snake Juice. Hunting trip. My favorite was Ron was shot and Donna’s Mercedes was jacked. LOL

The Office

Its a classic. And well deserved one. When I told you about the problematic things a TV show does. This is it.  You'll see the obvious ones in the first couple of episodes and would probably say: ‘Hey that’s not kinda okay’ but you’ll let it slip because it was hidden in some passive aggressive tone. But there are some jokes where as the time goes by you’ll only slowly realize just now how there is a slight misogynist/other undertones. It’s not just ‘Hey it was kinda not okay.’ But more of a ‘OMG that was not okay’. But the transformation and the character growth of Michael Scott is one of the biggest clutch moments you'll ever see in TV history. That needs to be studied. This used to be my favorite TV Show. But as I watched more well-written comedy shows, I realized how sometimes, people over hyped this show for what it is. It is still a great show. But the two mentioned above were miles better and deserve the same recognition this show gets and still receiving.

Favorite Character? Pam and Dwight. What do I hate about it? A lot. Jim in the last season. Michael in the first episode. Angela when he tries to juggle two men. Favorite Episode? The bat episode. And the legendary Fire Drill episode. ‘Stanley! Barack is president. Barack is black, Stanley!’

Brooklyn 99

The start of my Adam Sandberg obsession. His character had a lot of green flags. And the story was so cute and funny. Also, one of the greatest TV couples out there. (Jake Peralta and Amy Santiago) It is very wholesome and smart. The characters themselves and their story build-up. Enemies to lovers, done right!

Favorite Character? Amy Santiago. Jake Peralta. (Such a green flag guy.) What do I hate about it? The police propaganda. What more can I say? Stop this, America. Favorite episode? All the Halloween episodes where they have a little contest. Especially when Jake proposes to Amy. 

Gossip Girl

The epitome show. The blueprint. I don’t care how toxic you say this was. Or how bad it is for the recent youth. It is what it is. And yes I love Chuck and Blair. But I like Blair better. She’s the Queen. I love the fashion in the show and the pretty girls and the dresses they wear. And might I say, Blair runs this show. It’s so epic where she actually bagged a prince. And I think that would be such a great ending for her character but of course, they have to make it complicated and make a character bad for the sake of another few seasons. But I don’t mind it. The show was still good after that. Serena is such a… BLEUGH. Hate that girl down. Raised me as a bad bitch I am. 

Favorite Character? Blair. DUH. What do I hate about it? Serena. And lily and her ways with Serena. The fucking pedophilia/ grooming that somehow we bat an eye on.  Favorite Episode?  - Where Blair is doing the Waldorf designs.  - I loved it back when they were in Constance. Gossip girl makes such sense in that setting. Basically when they’re in school. - I also love the Blair takedowns. Legendary.  - The Hamptons episodes were okay.  - Blair’s wedding (both with Louie and with Chuck)

While you were sleeping.

Top 2 best K-drama of all time and she ain’t number 2. I never liked Suzy but this drama made me a fan of her. I love love loooove the story and the lore and the connections and flashbacks and all of it. It’s perfect and I don’t think I’ll ever love a drama like this ever again. The chemistry of the main two leads is amazing and also with the second-lead. Jung Hae In, come here baby let me love you instead. I love the sub-stories and how it connects to the main plot. It’s sooo good. Peak of K-Drama. Like OHHH don’t even get me started with the cinematography. It’s funny, it’s romantic, exciting, mysterious, dramatic… all of the feelings you'll feel in this drama. 

Favorite Character? Nam Ho-Joo. My girl is the key to everything. She’s it. I also like Lee Jong Suk’s brother and of course Jung Hae In. I love the mother, the police officer and of course Jung Suk’s character. I’m telling you the cast ate. Favorite Episode? All of it. I don’t know what to say. What I hate about it? Hmmm… actually I lied. There is one episode that I hate… it is when Nam HoJoo’s mother hated JaeChan all of a sudden. And the reason is just absurd to me. Maybe it’s just me and the way I see things differently or because I wasn’t a mother yet. But come on, that reason is so stupid. But I guess they have to stop having breakfast there at some point. I mean if that’s the reason, PD-nim, you should’ve just made them stop. You don’t need that drama.

Hospital Playlist.

One of the best K-dramas and the most comforting K-drama. I don’t know about you but this drama is home. Just like While you were sleeping, I think these kinds of dramas are so authentic that replicating something like this would be very hard to do. It’s so popular that even doctors watch it in Korea and make commentary about it.  I love the relationship of the characters from the main ones to their respective love interest to other side characters. The whole hospital setting wasn’t just the focus but the actual life and struggle of the medical people. It’s really well written. There’s no antagonist, just people and life. I love that there is no power struggle between the supposed owner of the hospital and the appointed CEO, and they actually become more close. And probably lovers…

Favorite Character? Kim Jun Wan, Lee Ikjun. They are all loveable but I think I fell more connected and fell in love in general with each of their characters.  Favorite Episode? The one where Ikjun cracked the egg in Junwan’s head, comedy gold. All of them are good actually. ALL OF IT! What I hate about it? The age gap between the love interest. Like…. Aren’t they just Attending and Professors? It’s probably not that big of a deal but if you really pick every bone in this drama I would say this is what irks me.

Descendants of The Sun

I mean it is the OG. Opened the doors of K-Drama real wide. It’s not the first big K-Drama hit in the PH but it’s like the start of the Korean wave in the Philippines. Everyone is obsessed and so am I. And not putting this on the list would just be wrong. So wrong. I still rewatch this from time to time and try to ignore the fact that they are not together anymore. Or the fact that I hate Song Jong Ki now. I love the story. The acting and the cinematography. This drama shows you what a real budget is. Sure some dramas have a bigger production than this but this is a real budget put to use. Can’t even comment on the acting because it’s SHK. I don’t know about SJK but SHK and the rest ate.

Favorite character? Kang Mo yeon. Yoon MyeongJu. I mean the girls. The girls carry this drama. (The girls and a few men, not you SJK.) Favorite episode? The earthquake. The diamonds. (Although some of the injuries are very similar and inspired by Gray’s anatomy. We close our eyes.) What I hate about it? The Hospital director… and that one stupid doctor. I also don’t understand when Onew’s character went over dramatic just because he ran away during an aftershock, and when a survivor got mad at him for not helping him. Sir, a doctor's life should be prioritized because if he went superhero on you there are more lives that will be lost. I think him being affected by some teenager/worker’s opinion is just so…. unprofesh. 

Hometown ChaCha

A very hometown vibe, also made one of the comforting KDrama that existed. So……… good. I love it’s cinematography. The characters, their involvement in each other’s lives and their very own backstory, their growth and their ending in general. It’s so rare to have a happy-good Kdrama. I feel like most of the dramas lately made their ending so heavy and open ended that it will keep you up at night. But sometimes people just need a breather and a happy ending. And this is exactly what it is. A feel-good Kdrama through and through. Plus the two leads are good looking so it’s a no brainer that this KDrama is so popular. Shin MinAh did well, and her fashion, unlike the mass’ opinion. Is good. I looooove it. Made me want to buy a Silver Vivier but since it’s so expensive. Just settled for a simple silver mary janes for a while. 

Favorite Character? The best friend. And of course Ms. Dentist. What do I hate about it? The last episodes where one of the leads where he has a conflict with his past. That it’s not even his fault. Like why would you…. I think that is unnecessary.  But I guess we need it for the drama. Favorite Episode? I’m sorry. You might find it as a cliche, but everything. All of it.

Tempted (i know..)

Going against the public is something I always do. I know. At this point might as well call it a kink. Because holy shit. This drama was hated by the public. I don’t understand how the public would collectively enjoy True Beauty and yet hate this show. For me they are in the same tier. Or maybe I’m just butthurt because you all ganged up to bash Joy’s acting when she’s not the problem. It’s the script. And there I said it, that this was a mess top to bottom. But this is a chaos I want to be part of. 

Favorite Character? Joy’s character. Hands down. All of them. I mean literally all of the characters are bad people who don't need to hang out together. Even the adults, they’re worse. Only Joy’s character was likable and Joy understood her well. Let me just add my 2 cents again, you can be a bad-willed person in the show and yet you could be the greatest character from the show as well. But this show has two things; bad characters that are badly written as well. It’s not winning at all. Only Joy’s character made sense and kept making sense throughout the show and somewhat she was shitted on for playing it really well. Also the rest of the cast bullied Joy so those people’s days are numbered. I’m looking at you Moon Gayoung and Woo Dohwan. Kung magsyota man kayo please wag kayo mambully ng ibang cast member. Di naman kayo magaganda’t gwapo. PWE! What do I hate about it? A lot. So why do you even include this on this list? To give you an answer to the latter question, is because I looooved the angst. I love the push and pull and the cat and mouse chase. And a lot of you said that she doesn’t have chemistry with Woo DoHwan. It’s just that the guy has more chemistry with Gayoung (because naglalandian sila). But to give you an answer to the initial question. I hate how messy it is. How badly written, especially the adult’s character. If you’re a feminist this is somewhat the opposite of what you’re fighting for. Like how can you be a mother and not care about your kid because you wanted to be with your first love. I get it. Yay career woman but holy fuck…. You literally and completely disregard your daughter. And also everyone in this drama was selfish. They’re not exactly what they say they are. If you’re really a friend you should let him be with someone he loves.  Favorite Episode? Girl, after all the trashing I did. You might be surprised that I have a favorite episode from this show. I love the first couple of episodes. I know it’s all part of the plan but I find it very cute. I told you I like push and pull. Cat and mouse chase, duh.

My Mister. 

Now let’s get back to the real K-Drama grind. I remember watching while I’m also at the lowest point of my life. And let me tell you go straight to my bones and through my stomach. My guts flipped, my eyes were swollen. Completely sobbing. Ugly crying. This is a real drama. If you want your consumer to feel devastated. You should do a drama like this. Not because you want them to be devastated just because you want people to be. Give them more. Give them something to really sob for. The actors are acting, all of them. They are well written. And all of them have a good ending.

Favorite Character? IU’s character. The CEO.  What do I hate about it? I know that this needs to be more slow-phase but this is a little slow phase for me. I didn’t totally hate it but I hate the silence. Because it’s really triggering to me. I think it is more of my fault. The silence was really good. I just fucking hate how it affects me. It probably means that it does its job right? Favorite Episode? Okay, don’t get me wrong with this one. But my favorite was when her grandmother died. I know I should’ve not said that but it is. That episode is the most heart-wrenching piece of media I watched in my life. A real masterpiece. 

Skam (Norway and Texas)

Living through Google Drive links. If you know, you know. And if you have lived that era you need compensation somehow. Skam is a show about teenagers' real life and problems. There are a lot of charming points of that show but there are a lot of things that will make your eyebrow raise! Arrah didn’t we have a show like that? It’s called SKINS. Aren’t they just a copycat? Yes, somehow but this show is like the 20th century version. More ‘Now’ problems. Not that the ‘before’ problems weren't the problem anymore. They still are. IT’s just there are new ones. And yes, just when you guys are lowering your guns, I put Skam-Austin here. And that's just the truth. For the first time in my life I would admit that the white people did something… nice.

Favorite Character? Noora. I love a well-read girl.  What do I hate about it? The part in Skam-OG Season 4 where Noora has to get all the boys and none for the main girl for that season. I also hate the fact that it somehow made her the main character not the girl that is supposed to be the main character.  Favorite Episode? The party where Noora told William he’s selfish….. And when William gets out of the car with his boys after his date with Noora being all beaten up. That Kanye song and the wind did all the work. Fucking masterpiece.

The Haunting of Hill House

I am a weird girl. I am a cool girl…. (Gone girl monologue). My comfort show is a horror show. No, but for real. TV history was made after this show was released. There are articles written about this. I can’t lie about this show because it is out there. And if you don’t buy all the shit that I will say about this show…. 1. Why the hell are you deep down to this post?, and 2. Go see it for yourself. THERE ARE ARTICLES.

 I can’t believe that a horror show would give me such comfort. I was a scaredy-girl. I do get scared a lot but I don’t mind it. And this… it’s just beautiful. Like while you were sleeping. The connections of everything from the flashback to the present time are just mind-boggling. It’s so well made, it’s criticism proof. I love the symbolism and little Easter eggs hidden in each scene. I love the attention to detail through the script and props. Can’t you believe it? If all filmmakers would just have the same attention to details we could’ve enjoyed the media to the fullest.

Favorite Character? Eleonor and Little Eleonor. I also love the Neck-bent lady. *wink* What do I hate about it? Nothing. I love every single episode of it. Oh I hate Steven. Boy you’re the one with the third eye, open it. Favorite Episode? The funeral episode. That 360 shot was something. And I think that was the one that imprint Haunting of Hill House as one of the greatest shows. 

Queen's Gambit

Oh look at that. We finally made it to the end. I never thought we'd be able to make it this far but here we are. Look at us. If you made it through this post holy fuck let me kiss you. You must’ve been interested in me. And I appreciate it. 

So, for this show. Is there anything left I have to say for this one? And the answer is YES. This show just woke up all the fashion desires I have in my body. And it’s not even a fashion related show. It’s about chess. But that's just one of the many things that you can commend in this show. 

Beth’s growth, not only on a personal level but her relationship with others. How she started alone but ended up being surrounded by many people who loves and adores her is just *chef kiss*. The motherly love shown by her adoptive mother was so good. Can I just say how good it was? It was one of fewest adoptive mother-daughter relationships that has a very good outcome. There is no grudge and abuse (which happens a lot in a show where a mother adopts someone) Just mutual respect that eventually turns to love. Among all the relationships Beth has in that show I think her love for her step mother was the most significant and the most impactful. Of course her love for chess was the main plot and the reason for this show. But her love for her mother and desire for affection was the gasoline that moves the whole show. I also love how the show portrays vices like alcoholism, cigarettes and drugs and yet oit was still a graceful show. It was done tastefully. But most importantly I love the fact that a girl like her keeps battling in a world played by a lot of men.  Such a classy show.

Favorite Character? Beth. Obvi. What do I hate about it? The age gap between all of his opposite sex romantic interests. What the fuck was that?  Favorite Episode? I just love seeing Beth’s transformation. I will say those episodes where she shops or where she is dressed beautifully. The final white outfit….. LOVE. Wow. Wow. We’ve finally made it. The end. 

Would it be funny if I just stop writing here without having a closing remark because I’m tired and writing this whole piece drains helluva brain juices I have. Very funny.

rip gambit you will be missed 😔

Don't even know what to say tbh.

For those that don't know, the big State of the Game article came out detailing incoming changes and adjustments and all the big stuff. Gambit was mentioned! But at what cost. Basically, they are ceasing any kind of support for Gambit. What we have now is what it is. We will get the Dreaming City map back in TFS and they will add Shadow Legion and Lucent Hive as enemy factions in TFS. That's all.

As many of you have noticed, we’ve been quiet on Gambit since last year’s overhaul that launched alongside The Witch Queen. In that revamp, the team made significant changes across five categories in Gambit: core activity fundamentals, Primeval tuning, invasions, ammo economy, and rewards. Unfortunately, these updates didn’t move the needle for player engagement. Although we know our Gambit fans mostly care about new or returning maps, this is an area of the game with lower engagement that would take resources away from more popular parts of the game to shore up.   While we don’t have plans to dedicate more resources to significantly transform Gambit, we do have a few updates planned for the year of The Final Shape. These include porting the Cathedral of Scars map and its beautiful Dreaming City setting into the latest version of Destiny 2, as well as adding the Shadow Legion and Lucent Hive enemy types. 

I don't know how to tell you this Bungie, but the reason "engagement is low" in Gambit is because Gambit sucks. Ever since half of it was removed with DCV, it just sucked. It has no variety, the gameplay is largely busted, it's not sufficiently updated, ammo changes suck, invasion cycle sucks (why is the enemy even getting a portal when their Primeval is at 5% health and the other team is still in mote collecting phase is beyond me), there are no cool armour sets to chase (just look at Iron Banner and Trials stuff, imagine dedicated cosmetics) and finally there are simply no weapons that are worth anything. Both Vanguard and Crucible have more weapons and also adept versions. There is zero reason to go into Gambit without major changes to Gambit. And now with the further changes to how playlists and challenges will work, there will be even less reason to go into Gambit. Observe:

Before then, we’re making Gambit entirely optional to maximize your rewards unless you’re looking for a piece of gear that’s specific to the mode. Gambit will continue to serve as a source of Exotic engrams via weekly challenges, though as we mentioned above, you’ll be able to complete all your weekly challenges in any ritual you’d like starting in Season 22. If you want to stick to Vanguard or Crucible challenges without touching Gambit, now you can.  We’re also reducing the number of Gambit-specific Seasonal Challenges starting in Season 22, so players won’t need to bank motes to be able to earn that big purse of Bright Dust for completing nearly every challenge in the Season. Finally, we’re adding Fireteam Matchmaking to Gambit next Season, which will replace the Freelance node and should result in faster, better matchmaking by combining both Gambit playlists. We’ll keep an eye on reception and player engagement after these additions take place, and we hope you’ll visit ‘ol Drifter next Season to get your hands on his new Void Machine Gun. 

Ngl, but I don't think anyone besides like a total of 6 people will play Gambit next season. The incentive to go in there is completely removed. You won't even have to go in there for pinnacles or for challenges. The Void Machine Gun will not be enough of an incentive because the chance of that gun being better than two recently available craftable Void Machine Guns (Commemoration and Retrofit Escapade) is very low. And besides, once you get it at the end of your first match, you can leave Gambit forever.

This is the feedback loop that just reinforces the idea that people don't like Gambit. And I mean. Who would at this point. I'm pretty sure that if Crucible had stayed the same as it was at the start of Beyond Light, engagement would be low there too. But you know. Crucible has received major updates pretty much every season since with multiple new modes, several Trials overhauls, Iron Banner overhaul, competitive overhaul, new armours and weapons added and YES, even new maps. God forbid even 5% of these resources went into Gambit.

Anyway, this is the whole section about Gambit in 6500 words. It's basically a "you guys aren't playing this so we're doing the bare minimum of keeping it in the game as is, no new work will be done on it ever." Thanks I guess.

And for the record, something I also added while having a rant in my discord, I want to make it clear that I don't want anyone to spiral into a Bungie hate train. Even for this. I understand perfectly well what's the community attitude towards Gambit and what it's been for years now. People just don't like it and they're not incentivised to like it and they're actively encouraged to hate it. Spending resources into a game mode on the hope that maybe you can change people's minds would be insanity. Like, the amount of change Gambit would need to MAYBE start appealing to gamers would be beyond any reasonable time and resources Bungie can put in. And if you could guarantee that people would love and play Gambit then, fine. But you can't. Most likely, even if major changes happened, people would still just do their weekly stuff and bail. It's simply not worth it. In order for people to like it, it needs to be completely and thoroughly overhauled in a way that would need more time and effort than the entire Light subclass overhaul and it's just not a reasonable expectation, nor is it guaranteed to work. So I get it.

I'm still disappointed and annoyed about it because I believe it wasn't given a fair chance at all. I also know how good it can be and how Gambit Prime could've been improved upon over the years if they tried. Instead, it got removed and that was honestly the death sentence for Gambit. It's unfortunate. It's my favourite game mode that could've been so much better was it given even a fraction of attention of Crucible.

I'll still be playing it. You will find me in the Gambit queue waiting for 2 hours to find 7 other lunatics to play with, don't worry about it. But I'm absolutely incredibly sad about them being basically forced to axe the potential of the whole game mode that is incredibly creative and fits with the type of game Destiny is perfectly.

There's other interesting stuff in the article and some upcoming really cool improvements and changes to the game. But if you're a fan of Gambit in any capacity, this is a death certificate for the mode. I suggest coming to terms with it quickly because Bungie changing their minds about this is highly unlikely.

Animation Night 169: Sex. 2.

So. Storytime.

Two years ago, we had a joke. "We should totally show some hentai on Animation Night 69." we said. Having said that, we were honour-bound to totally commit to the bit. Teaming up with @mogsk, I wrote a massive post on sexuality in animation and the history of 'hentai', from the hentai seiyoku discussed in 20th-century sexology journals to the modern subcultural kaleidoscope.

It is, genuinely, one of my favourite posts I ever wrote in this project. It's definitely not perfect - the sections on BL and the lolicon boom are especially weak, but still! There's no way I'm beating that.

Mogs, meanwhile assembled a perfectly pitched playlist of animation dealing with the theme of sexuality, from classic oldschool BL like Kaze to Ki no Uta to charming little comedies like Oruchuban Ebichu, and a scattering of actual h-anime like Weather Report Girl. For my part, I led with the genuinely classic film Kanashimi no Belladonna (Belladonna of Sadness).

So somehow - somehow! - we managed to make the idea of getting together with your online friends to watch a bunch of anime about sex just... plain fun and uplifting, to the point that @footsteps-on-the-dance-floor will tell me years later how much she enjoyed it. Not to mention, we got a pretty good cross-section of the different dimensions of sexuality in animation as well!

I didn't even get banned on Twitch.

This week, the counter has drawn the sex number. So can we do it again? Well, my friends, we're gonna try~ Tonight, @mogsk and canmom present: the long-awaited sequel to sex. Sex, 2.

This time we're narrowing our focus a bit. One of the distinctive elements of eromanga, by the analysis of Kimi Rito in The History of Hentai Manga, is how particular images get encoded as signs that can be reused by other mangaka, and these signs can become the seed for particular subgenres. So, our selection tonight is in part designed to give a brief cross-section of some of these visual tropes.

So let me introduce you to our program. CWs: sex, obviously; also a couple of these films (Cleopatra, Parade Parade) cw for rape. Here's the programme, read on for brief descriptions of each item and a lil cultural context~!

Cleopatra (クレオパトラ), 1970

Last time we led with certified classic, genuinely moving and good as hell film Belladonna of Sadness. This was part of a last gambit by the struggling Mushi Productions, the studio of Osamu Tezuka, credited with inventing TV anime back in the day with Astro Boy. Long before there would be such a thing as an h-anime subculture, Tezuka experimented with creating erotic animated films based on history and mythology.

Belladonna is the best remembered of the three, and with good reason. Tezuka was largely not involved by this point. The others, though... are some plain fucking weird movies, I'll tell you that much. So tonight we'll be watching Cleopatra (1970). I may have shown you the trailer before - this is the Caesar trampoline movie. That is only the beginning.

I recently finished reading Osamu Tezuka's manga Ayako, written in 1972-1973 - not long after this movie, actually, during Tezuka's gekiga phase. I'm sure it's common knowledge by now, but Tezuka was one horny old guy! Ayako has all manner of skulduggery: incest, murder, gangster stuff, more murder, etc., but the core story is about a girl who is imprisoned in an underground cell for 20-some years by the machinations of her family. As she grows up, she ends up in an incestuous relationship with her protective brother - and once she finally escapes, she is highly agoraphobic but also throws herself at nearly every man she meets.

It's very much a story of the sins of the past echoing down into the future, shot though with post-war history and gangster movies, but its central fixation is the figure of Ayako herself: the soft cloistered object of obsession and attraction. Whether they want to protect Ayako, seek absolution from her, fuck her, or exploit her.

But it's also in places a really wacky manga, with a lot of very comical contrivances or hyper-cartoonish panels with extreme squash and stretch. It's a completely different way of displaying action.

I think this gives me a sense of the sort of wavelength Tezuka was on when he draws a scene where Cleopatra is tied down by stakes and a bunch of guys line up to rape her while she shouts at them defiantly. It's all very theatrical, a huge contrast to the much more internally oriented Belladonna. Just a plain strange movie, but it's one I've been fascinated to watch for ages.

Whatever we make of Cleopatra, we'll jump into the program that Mogs drew up! Once again she's come through magnificently.

My Sexual Harassment (僕のセクシャルハラスメント), 1995-6

Our next act is some old school yaoi! One day I'll get to do that big effortpost on the history of BL, but not this day. In any case, Boku no Sexual Harassment is an OVA from the mid 90s about a young man called Junya Mochizuki trying to fuck his way up the company ranks for the sake of himself and his partner Kazunori Honma. In particular, he has an affair with his boss, Mr. Honma, running across the whole OVA.

This is perhaps best known for an infamous scene involving corn. It's here as a window into this period of BL - not quite as high-mindedly aesthetic as its 80s predecessors, and with its erotic focus being on like... 90s salarymen, which is quite a specific thing!

Interspecies Reviewers (異種族レビュアーズ), 2020

Next, a series which has the dubious distinction of proving too steamy for Crunchyroll. Interspecies Reviewers enters the general milieu of modern videogame-inflected fantasy anime, a comedy dancing along the line of whether it's too overtly porn to air on TV. The story tells of a group of fantasy characters who are the clients of monstergirl sex workers, hoping to encounter as many different species as possible. This is a frame device for a series of episodes focused around what it would be like to have sex with various kinds of monstergirl.

This is an example of a recent trend in TV anime, namely very overtly sexual cable TV anime such as High School DxD, which have in a way come to fill the gap left by OVAs. This is a niche that also includes the likes of Goblin Slayer and Redo of Healer. In contrast to those series' "big grimdark plot with a side of rape" approach, Reviewers is light-hearted fantasy sex comedy mixed with (if you live in China) a certain amount of actual porn, which fansubbers have kindly spliced back in to the censored release for us.

Agent Aika (AIKa), 1997-9

The panty shot is one of the more popular visual tropes in eromanga, to the point that Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga dedicates a whole two page spread to the history of the trope. (Surprisingly, I can't find any more substantial account in Kimi Rito's History of Hentai Manga).

You'll see it often enough in anime, overtly or subtly, and certainly in the early works of Katsuhiko Nishijima, who debuted in 1986 with Project A-ko, a classic Kanada-inflected OVA that still bears signs of its hentai roots. But there is nothing that takes the panty shot to the same extreme as Agent Aika (1997). The degree to which the camera in this action anime contrives to show panties at a machinegun rate... it crosses over into a level where it feels less like outright fetish material and more like experimental art.

This is a series that is only coherent through the erotic focus. And yet, it's not generally categorised as porn. Nobody actually fucks. Lines are very arbitrary...

Comical Psychosomatic Medicine (アニメで分かる心療内科), 2015

This ONA adapts a gag manga series themed around the idea of an education series on fetishes, paraphilias, and so on - not so different in concept from Peepoodoo and the Super Fuck Friends, from the sound of it! The ONA is produced by Shin-Ei Animation, a venerable studio known for beloved characters like Doraemon; it's a bunch of five minute bite-sized chunks which I plan to sprinkle in between the other stuff we watch as a palate cleanser.

Parade Parade (パレードパレード), 1996

Having warmed you up sufficiently, this is the point in the evening where we pull out the futa porn.

Parade Parade is an OVA by the studio Pink Pineapple, one of the giants of the 90s erotic OVA scene - I wrote about them a bit last time. It's a relatively "tasteful" example of the futanari (二形) trope, literally 'two forms', referring to basically a character with a mostly cis woman-typical body except for a penis (generally in addition to a vulva), which she will typically use in penetrative sex. This is typically represented as either the result of magic, an intersex condition, or just a fantasy world where it's not unusual.

Depending on your subcultural corner, this might be further distinguished from other niche variants of dickgirl (e.g. a futa must have both sets of genitals).

In anime and manga, the futa trope apparently traces back to the introduction of American trans porn magazines to Japan, inspiring mangaka such as Kitamimaki Kei to start drawing futanari characters. Futanari manga first spread through dōjinshi in the 80s, and became popular in eromanga in the 90s, before circling back to the West. So actually yeah I guess this one is on us trans girls! I always assumed it was like, an independent invention. The more you know...

Here we have succesful idol Kaori, who's secretly intersex - and only her girlfriend Yuko knows. She's very careful to let nobody know, for the sake of her career, but a rival lesbian idol is about to find out...

Golden Boy (1995-6)

Now here is a true classic.

Golden Boy is a comedy series about a wanderer named Kintaro, who dropped out of uni to travel around Japan getting into sexual escapades. Each episode, he runs into someone and hopefully falls for them while coming across as an idiot pervert, but gradually reveals that he's actually a decent and resourceful guy - and yet, having found love, there will always be a reason he must move on. A setup to hang all sorts of plots, carried by some honestly unreasonably impressive animation from the realist school, most notably Mitsuo Iso. It's just... very very well done.

The above clip did the rounds on here a while ago (I think maybe the dubbed version), and we will indeed be watching episode 4 to put that in context.

Queen's Blade (2009)

So this is a studio ARMS OVA - the guys who did stuff like Mezzo Forte with Yasuomi Umetsu - a fantasy story about a warrior tournament. But for our purposes it's standing in for the 巨乳 kyonyuu subgenre - meaning 'huge boobs'. So if you wanna do the meme in Japanese, that's the word you need.

This has a rather specific history in eromanga, recounted by Kimi Rito in The History of Hentai Manga. Per Rito, the popularity of the term dates back specifically to 1989, where it was used to promote porn star Kimiko Matsuzaka, as well as Western gravure porn magazines. Gradually displacing other terms like 'D-cup', the onomatopoeic ボイン boin and portmanteau デカパイdekapai, kyonyuu soon became cemented as the term for a type of character design. It grew in popularity in the space opened up by the bishōjo genre established by the lolicon boom.

So under the pen of mangaka like Kei Keitamimaki (him again!), designs with massively exaggerated boobs became very popular, defining a subgenre of their own. Artists would sometimes express anxiety over whether they would be 'allowed' to draw such extreme designs, but it became widespread in seinen magazines. Gradually, these genre boundaries dissolved and boob size started to become a symbol of characterisation.

Queen's Blade is a fairly longrunning series but as far as I understand, it's broadly a silly ecchi anime about women with very large boobs fighting to become queen. It's not the most comical example of this trope necessarily (nothing can really beat High School of the Dead's supersonic bullet dodging tits) but it's pretty up there.

Colorful, 1999

Colorful is a comedy series of brief (~7 minute) skits about boys trying to see panties and suffering many consequences. As a late 90s anime it's got some interesting stylstic Y2K stuff - look at that rotoscope clip! - as well as strong animation from people like Norio Matsumoto of Naruto fame.

Motivation

The think that creates struggles to study is having the lack of motivation. Instead of being in your room always going to a café and changing the scenery creates a whole new sense of feeling and productivity! A clean desk is the first step to success.

Actually doing work

People would usually do all of the steps to create an enjoyable studying space, that they lost track of time and not get any work done. Starting as soon as possible with the hardest to easiest tasks helps create the perfect flow in order to finish your tasks.

Background music

This is completely optional but classical musics or brain musics may help the brain feel productive and focus. Avoiding music like rap, rock, indie, etc to not get distracted. Musics with lyrics in them tends to make your study sessions into singing sessions, using a classical music playlist on Spotify or any of your option of music platform to avoid getting distracted by your favourite artists.

Personally when I watch a movie involving a high achieving, academic validation character or just straight up smart, rich characters motivates me to study even more to be just like them.

Study techniques

If you study for 5 hours with no breaks chance's are, you'll forget everything very quickly! Taking small breaks lik 10 minutes every hour or two and getting up from you seat to stretch will help not only your blood flow in order to avoid cramps, but also refresh the mind to process what you're learning and or have learned!

laurel lance, kara danvers and oliver queen!!

Laurel Lance.

Okay, for this one I chose A Lot’s Gonna Change by Weyes Blood. It reminds me of her after the gambit went down and the whole arc around it (Also it kind of reminds me of her after the undertaking and her becoming the black canary and being a hero but ANYWAYS.)

“If I could go back to a time before now before I ever fell down, when I had the world gently wrapped at my fingers.”

Before the gambit, Laurel had her whole life at her fingertips: college, a semi stable family dynamic, a boyfriend, a whole ass future ahead of her. With one act, her entire life was pulled from underneath her feet.

“And no one good thing could be taken away from me, if I still believe that hearts don’t lie.”

Like I said, her entire life and family was shattered and it just… kept shattering and she was trying desperately to pick up the pieces while her own hands were bleeding. Every couple of years something good would be taken away. It reminds of all the trust issues that she had developed over all the years of hurt and betrayal: her parents, her sister, Oliver (also I want to make it clear that this is not me bashing Sara or Oliver.)

and how long it took for Laurel to trust tommy, to let him in only for him to die and her to sleep with Oliver again.

That’s just some of the lyrics and my interpretation, anyways it’s VERY e-1 laurel coded.

Kara Danvers

For this one I chose ancient dreams in a modern land by MARINA. It reminds me of Kara after landing on earth and becoming supergirl also how even though she grew to call earth her home, she still felt disconnected from it and Argo.

“Our ancestors had to fight to survive, Just so we could have a chance of a life.”

How Kara’s parents (and Clark’s parents) sent her and her cousin away for their safety and how there was (probably) a possibility that it would fail, how Alura knew that her pod was knocked into the phantom zone. How Kara grieved her planet, her parents, her friends, the random people that she ran into.

Basically this scene.

“What's your purpose, why were you put on Earth? You could be lost but you belong to the world.”

How she was told she was sent to earth to protect and guide Clark and when she gets there he doesn’t need her protection anymore. Basically Her purpose to keep going after her entire world died was gone, how she tried so hard to blend in to be normal. How supergirl was always treated like some.. publicity magnet for catco in the earlier seasons and how much Kara hated it.

But that’s just my analysis.

Oliver Queen

For this one, I genuinely couldn’t pick because I have a 4 hour long playlist for him and I love his character so much BUT headless horseman by the microphones. It just fits him so well.

“I got hit hard, I’m on the ground and if you swing again I’ll duck but I wish you the best of luck.”

This applies to Oliver in so many parts in his life, but mostly the island/those five years away. How the hope of returning slowly faded from his eyes but he still kept going, fighting for something he didn’t know anymore.

“I miss my closest friend, And now I cling to the rocks and the wind.”

Oliver going back to the island post-season one. he didn’t know where to put all the grief, for Tommy and for his father (I think Moira confessing to sabotaging the queens gambit unraveled all the unprocessed grief Oliver had shoved down in order to survive.) in a (semi) safe environment so he went back to the place it all happened in hopes that something would push it back down and he wouldn’t have to deal with it.

Again, this is just my analysis/opinion. But yeah, the entire song is literally so Oliver coded.

— her family own a big old farmhouse with a ranch and loads of animals in propsect hill, and they've employed a lot of the island's farmhands and animal handlers over the years. her mother tends to get drunk and fire everybody when she's stressed so as a result they've gone through quite a lot of staff.

 — her parents are german-american. she was born in marina in a big old farmhouse. her great-grandfather moved to america as an immigrant and worked on a plantation, made his way up cos he could speak a lot of languages and therefore win more people over. putnams have always been good at persuasion. for the last two generations, putnam men have owned the farm rather than worked on it, handled finances, kept the books and stocks, and do very little of the dirty work. the putnam farm is a big supplier in the island's meat industry. they have a competition for “the biggest hog in prospect hill” every summer.

— both of her parents had large personalities, so alma’s never really been shy around adults, even as a kid she’d speak to them in a forthright, confident manner, and because she was always surrounded by adults, she’s always seemed a bit wise beyond her years. up until high school, she didn’t really have any friends. other kids thought of her as an oddball, a grown up in an eleven-year-old’s body, and she thought of them as immature and beneath her. rather than sleepovers, bike rides, and making mud pies, alma put her time instead into bettering herself, learning to speak several languages, learning the clarinet, practising ballet, horse-riding. she was a child who always had to have an activity or project on the go, or she would become listless and nightmarish for the carousel of au pairs and nannies hired to care for her.

— after turning down juliard bcos of said injury, alma went to columbia uni and majored in classical civilisation. she can read ancient greek and latin, but she also speaks french and beginner’s italian. she studied classics cos she thinks it makes her sound smart, but actually doesn’t really care for latin and just loves learning about feckless hedonism and the festivals of bacchus and writing about how all women in myth are literally forgotten or abused for their bodies and the greek fascination with cannibalism. anyway she spent most of her time at uni doing ballet and theatre anyway

— she’s very much a consolidation of every character in the secret history. has a morbid longing for the picturesque at all costs. obsessed with w.h. auden and the beat poets. the film to watch if you want to understand alma is thoroughbreds. there are a lot of parallels between lily (anya’s character) and alma, but she also embodies amanda’s cold disposition and ability to cry on cue.

— alma’s idea of a romantic gesture: exchanging vials of blood so that each of you can carry a piece of your lover around on your neck with you always, or being gifted a ruby-hilted dagger engraved with her initials. she wants the fucked up kind of love that megan fox and machine gun kelly have. her love language is gifts (sociopath) and words of affirmation.  

— she will put everything else on hold for success. she lets things consume her with obsession. at university, her academic merit and her reputation within the theatre society was all she could focus on. she loves the smell of libraries, the ancient smoke of learning, of feeling like old wine in a new bottle reincarnated from the bones of some old, dead witchy woman who invented a cure for cowpox or somethin. as well as the practical elements of ballet, she loves the theory of it. she’ll read every book she can find, despite knowing u can’t learn a skill like that from a book. she will stop at nothing 2 get what she wants. watch ur damn backs.

— pretentious motherfucker. loves poetry, especially the romantics, loves the morbid poets even moreseo, edgar allen poe, sylvia plath, allen ginsberg, she just loves them all. can’t get enough. her favourite films are like…. wanky artfilm independent european cinema. especially french new wave. loved umbrellas of cherbourg and her clothing style is based a lot around looks in that film.  “what do you think of goddard’s work??” while snorting a line off someone’s sink at 5am on a school night, but you can bet she’ll make it to that 9am ballet class smelling of rose petals, looking pristine and like butter wouldn’t melt on her tongue.

— very intelligent and beautiful and knows both of those facts. loves to play devil’s advocate and growing up she was always an active member of her school’s debate society. humanitarian, vegan. judgemental but takes great care not to appear so. extremely petty and vindictive. must come first. obsessively devours mystery and thriller novels. she herself is a gillian flynn book waiting to happen.

— farm hands / blacksmiths / welders / carpenters / ppl who have worked at the farm that alma fucks with. it's like a power kick for her because she knew she could be absolutely vile and was basically untouchable because the moment they said anything back or didn't play into her games she would just tell her parents to fire them. can be quite emotionally manipulative and coercive. also loves to flirt with the farm hands n try to seduce them and has been doing this since she was a teenager. again, i think it's the power trip, and the idea of having a secret with them that nobody else knows about, but like, also being able to use tht against them.

– regulars at the library!! alma spends most of her time in a cage underground (its what she deserves) in the archives so if u have a character who is big into reading or might be carrying out a research project or even works for the police dept / journalist etc - alma's your girl. guards the town records with her little gloves and knows everybody's business. a real rita skeeter bitch if u will.

– didn't go into dancing professionaly but spends a good deal of time at the studio so dance partners she practices with. if there's a local company tht put on shows or smthn then i want ppl who she actually respects and views as competent peers, ppl who she’s constantly undermining to subtly dig away at their self confidence,  two dancers always goin for the same roles hate each other dynamic, i want mia goth / dakota johnson bein cute in suspiria vibe

currently reading: Actual books: they're piling up on my bedside table and I haven't started one in forever, but next on the list is Good Omens. Fic: I'm part way through Of Earthly Wants by maevewren, and I'm really enjoying it! Definitely recommend it if you're looking for some Sterek to read.

current obsession: Outside of Teen Wolf/Sterek? Sleep, mostly 😅 My life at the moment is pretty much work, sleep, and desperately trying to fit writing time in wherever I can with varying degrees of success.
