I agree with the the third person chosen. And I've been bored of the retellings that are epistolary for no reason (and most are like "Here is Mina's REAL journal, finally we can read the story from HER perspective and how she wants a different man than Jonathan".) or first person purely to say that the original authors completely lied about everything. Third person limited (or omniscient) is such an opportunity to play with a first-person-limited source material in order to explore outside their thoughts and writing.

The kind of stories that break their own back trying to contort canon into a pretzel knot of 'no wait the characters were all randomly lying to their diaries for no reason and they REALLY did/thought THIS FOR REAL HONEST!!1!' are so nauseating, especially when inflicted in first person

Third person is a far vaster playground with way more toys to play with (even if I choose to play mainly with the toys and implications that canon left laying around in the sand)

#now and then I'll come across a rare first person story (sans diary) that really hits though #I'm not shooting down the entire style #it just has to be done well #there are exceptions to every preference #my writing

how many times do i have to tell you that if you’re going to make walburga (and any other female character) a two-dimensional stereotype, you better be doing the exact same for the death eater characters because (shocker!!!!) if you’re choosing to base how much attention you give to a character’s complexities on their actions, then they all did terrible, unjustifiable things, and as such should be receiving the same treatment

Look, I don’t know if this is an actually unpopular opinion, but I think that the Lotus Casino scene in the movie, was better than the one in the show. I’ve seen a lot of people in the fandom agree that the only good scene from the first movie is the Lotus Casino scene, because that shot of them taking a bite of the flower as the camera spins and Poker Face by Lady Gaga begins to play is just so much fun. The point of the casino is that it’s supposed to lure you in, it’s supposed to be fun and inciting, it’s supposed to make you feel the greatest you’ve ever felt , and I think that the movie captured that vibe much better than the show did. The entire scene in the show honestly felt a little boring, and I felt like adding Hermes in there took away from scenes we could’ve had (and don’t get me started on the fact that when they got out of the casino time was already up and all Hermes had done was just stall them). In the books it’s described as this magical, dream-like place, somewhere anyone, regardless of age, could unknowingly spend decades, maybe even centuries in. I just feel like the movie managed to capture that feeling much better than the show did.

back on my pathologic bullshit when i should be sleeping

anyways despite most of the original english translation being a bit funky, i think this line from Clara in the opening scene’s og translation makes more sense and flows better in english than the remastered translation, the line in the remaster sounds more awkward and disjointed to me.

Original (2005)

“What an absurd place, it’s just a piece of taxidermy. This means everything isn’t for real yet. Looks like it hasn’t started.”

Remaster (2015)

“What a silly place, it’s stuffed! So it’s not real for now…? I don’t think it has started yet.”

“stuffed” is way more vague and confusing, which —i’ll admit— is kind of pathologic’s whole vibe but i do still think “piece of taxidermy” is a better wording of it.
