Olaf Hits the Dragon with His Sword
Back in October my friend @unrepentantauthor and I played a round of @prokopetz's mini-RPG Olaf Hits the Dragon with His Sword. Today I noticed that every post about the game was made by someone playing solo, so (with my friend's permission) I'm posting our game as an example of what it looks like as a back-and-forth between two people.
They played Olaf; I played the Dragon.
OLAF, why have you come?
I am a knight sworn to defend the innocent, and to strike down evil beasts for the wrongs they have committed. The dragon has slaughtered countless people, and must die for it, if not by my sword, then by the hand of some other brave warrior to come. Today, the task falls to me. For I am capable, and I am here.
(+IRON)
As for THE DRAGON, what is your nature?
You speak of wrongs committed, little knight, and I do not deny them. I have shed the blood of the innocent and the wicked alike, the blameless man and the murderer; it was my power to do this, for I have taken this land and named it mine, and now all things live under my dominion and fall to their knees at the whisper of my presence. You are not the first knight to come here, seeking glory and heroism, speaking of the grief and pain I have caused; you are not the first knight whose bones will find their resting place in my hoard.
You name me DRAGON, O little knight who comes in iron, who seeks for vengeance and names it justice, but I name myself DEATH, I name myself DESTROYER, I name myself END OF ALL.
(+DEATH)
OLAF approaches THE DRAGON's lair.
If I must add my bones to your horde, so be it. I have shed blood every month of my life in service of my principles and my quests, and I have lost many precious things already. I have lost wealth to bad fortune. I have lost friends to irreconcilable faith. I have lost the best years of my youth to hard training. And I have lost finger, eye, and foot to past combats. Yet I have still more to give. I do not fear losing my life today.
(+SORROW)
THE DRAGON responds:
You do not fear death, and you believe you have the capability to vanquish me? What good is that iron shell of armour when the creature inside it has already halfway to death, having abandoned himself so to sorrow and sacrifice? You are weak, you little knight, you little fool, you pitiful thing with nothing to live for.
There is no justice in the iron of your sword; there is only death, yours or mine, and the foolishness of a man who has willingly abandoned so much. Your strength will one day come to an end, and when that day comes you will have nothing remaining to you.
You can never regain what you have lost. Lay down your sword, foolish knight. Melt down your armour and forge of its iron the shovel, the hoe, the plough. Abandon this futile endeavour.
(+IRON)
OLAF speaks:
I am confident in my steady hand, my keen eye, and my stalwart heart. I have slain monsters, and the prices I have paid are but costs, not failures. I may slay you today, and I would rather take my chance at doing so than retire to a profession of which I know nothing, to live out a life of vulnerability and humility. I will not expose myself to your predations, O Wyrm. I will do as I have done many times before, and shed your blood in service of my cause. I will be a credit to the name 'knight'.
(+AMBITION)
THE DRAGON responds:
It will be naught but the highest of honours, then, to be slain by such a man. I call it a great flattery, to know you hold my death so high in your esteem! A credit to the name of knight! A beast which slaughters in service of its cause, so accomplished in violence that it can conceive of naught else, who aspires so dearly to end life that it can never dream of creating something new.
How much blood is on your hands, knight? How many lives have you already ended? If I am to die then I go knowing it is at the hands of a dealer in death as great and terrible as I myself was in my prime.
(+AMBITION)
OLAF speaks:
How telling of your nature, that you should compare your slaughter to my vengeance. Do you truly see no difference between wanton and indiscriminate killing of the innocent, and the sanctioned ending of a violent life to prevent further suffering? Do not seek to make me doubt my just cause, when I have seen the ashes of the young and the bones of the meek left in your wake. Do not tell me of my bloodied hands when there is an ocean of blood in your maw. I will not waver. I will not stay my hand.
(+IRON)
THE DRAGON responds:
You are not the first to speak these words to me, knight, and I tell you now you shall not be the last. Look now upon my horde, these many suits of armour. See them battle-worn, once gleaming but gone now to rust and ruin, and know that within each of these iron shells lies a rotten sack of meat and bones, a thing which was once a man. I have been visited by more knights than you could ever count, though you may live a thousand years, and each of them came to me with your words in their mouth. They are long since forgotten, their stories untold and their names turned to dust. Yet I remain! I am the DRAGON, red and wrathful, greater than any; I have withstood armies, lain whole kingdoms to waste, outlived even the memories of those who aspired to destroy me. What are you compared to I, little knight, little morsel of meat whom I could end with the merest snap of my jaws.
I weary of this folly. Let us speak no more. Strike me down now, if you dare!
(+BLOOD)
OLAF HITS THE DRAGON WITH HIS SWORD
(roll: BLOOD 4, IRON 6 2 1, AMBITION 6 3, SORROW 2, DEATH 3. -1 IRON, -1 AMBITION. roll: BLOOD 1, IRON 5 3, AMBITION 3, SORROW 6, DEATH 5)
SORROW dominates. OLAF is left broken by his trials.
OLAF, speak of your wretchedness.
As I had known, but not allowed myself to fear, this was surely my final combat. I have sustained more wounds this day than any year of my life, and though I may yet survive, I will not live as I have done. My sword hand is lost, forever to remain in the belly of mine enemy. So too have I finally lost the courage that brought me here, poisoned to death by the words the DRAGON spoke to me ere I began our battle. This was my choice, but it is a choice I weep for. I am not only wounded, but old, and I shall be lucky to provide so much as an odd word of combat training to young squires, if I can even bring myself to do so. I am not yet dead, but I am diminished more by my survival than by any death the DRAGON could have given me.
DRAGON, speak of what comfort remains.
Olaf has lost both his sword hand and the unyielding courage which drove him forwards in his quest for justice. He is slower than he was, more hesitant, less certain, damaged in body and mind. He was not slain in battle, but he thinks his life is over all the same.
There is more to life than iron and death. There is grief and there is suffering. Olaf cannot stand to hear the songs written to commemorate his vanquishing of the dragon, and so when they are sung he listens instead to the laughter of children who no longer live in fear. He travels to villages the dragon had razed to the ground, and sees fresh green sprouts growing in what once was blasted wasteland. He wakes each night screaming, shuddering from nightmares, but there are gentle hands to sooth him and to hold him close.

The crackling embers calmed you and guided your heartbeat to slow to a steady tempo. The warmth that radiated from the fireplace threatened to bring a slew of memories from what felt like a past life.
You knew you should turn to face your interviewer, that you probably seemed rude ignoring him to instead stare longingly into the warming fire but something kept you there.
You felt... safe.
For the first time since the sirens sounded, you felt safe.
That thought brought you peace and you finally sighed in content and smiled as you turned to face the man who claimed to be your savior.
Mr. Langdon simply raised his eyebrows at you, not commenting on your actions of the past few minutes. The only other movement was his fingers slowly stroking the underside of his chin. They seemed to sparkle from the light catching the shining stones and golden metal.
He seemed more at ease as well, like he was able to experience the thoughts of peace and happiness that had been running in your mind. Or maybe the fire brought its own kind of warmth to him as well.
The sound of a log crumbling into ash turned your attention back to the fireplace. Your eyes only rested there for a moment but when you turned back the man in front of you had changed.
No longer a beautiful man leisurely sitting by the fire, Mr. Langdon instead had a furrowed brow with a matching grimace and leaned forward the moment your eyes met his once more.
You found yourself wondering what could have brought this sudden change. Before your thoughts could spiral any deeper into questions, you saw him open his mouth to speak. The low timber and plush lips brought an unwilling blush to your cheeks.
“How are you... enjoying things at the outpost?” Mr. Langdon’s pause and scrutinizing eyes made you nervous. Like he was a seasoned hunter laying a perfectly placed trap and he had no true care for your enjoyment, and instead was hoping you fell for the trick.
Despite the countless warning signs blaring in your mind, for some reason you wanted to tell him the truth. How much you hated Madam Venable for ruining an already depressing situation, how you wanted to scream every time a petty argument broke out over dinner, how many nights you laid awake wondering why you were facing this tribulation. Were you chosen or simply damned?
Oh, many times you wished you could escape this sadistic stone tomb.
Recalling his assurance, rather threat, that he would know if you dared to lie to him, you settled on the truth... just more simple.
“This isn’t how I imagined the apocalypse would go.”
A weighted statement full of multiple meanings but the truth nonetheless.
At that, you saw his lips flick up into a quick smile and his eyes glimmer in the low light dancing around the room.
“Is that so?” Mr. Langdon leaned back in his chair, crossing his legs and clasping his hands over his knee, the simple movement somehow seductive.
A flutter in your heart brought warmth to your body. Maybe it was the fact that you seemed to amuse Mr. Langdon, got him to smile in a way that didn’t seem malicious. Made him turn into the man you had seen just moments before.
You let yourself smile in return. For some reason, your tense body relaxed as if you were two friends casually conversing over a shared humorous experience.
Instead of laying out your reasons, something reckless inside your soul emboldened you to taunt him with a vague truth. Something about his pretentious demeanor intrigued you, especially after Gallant mimicked his line about being able to sense the darkest things about a person. You were desperate to see what he was hiding in the shadows of his own being.
“Yes.”
You looked him in the eyes, watching as he stared back blankly, his mask of aloof superiority now back. You knew it then to be a mask — you could feel his genuine self itching to be shown.
He was genuinely pleased to have someone make him feel something. For a moment, you wanted to continue your thoughts, share every thought and feeling and secret, but you wanted to see how far the game would go.
Your rational side knew it would likely end with you being left to rot in the outpost. It didn’t matter much. You accepted your death long ago and this entertainment finally brought some life back into your veins.
After nearly a minute of a scrutinizing glare, Michael removed his hands from his knee and laid them flat on the arms of the black leather chair.
Your attention was brought to the ringed fingers drumming lightly, as if he was pondering his next words. Something inside you didn’t quite believe him. As if it was an act for show. That he knew exactly was he was going to do next. He was simply... waiting.
Toying with you.
Seeing if you’d crack under the silence. Fill the lack of noise and if so, how you’d do it.
With an apology?
An insecure question?
A babbling attempt to say what you think he wants to hear?
Or something... else?
You thought forcing Michael to speak next would surely annoy him but instead when he opened his mouth, he seemed as if he was amused by your resolute rebellion. His teeth shined from the flickering fire, making him seem like a hungry beast.
The warmth seemed to increase from your side, like the flames were growing, intensifying, as you pressed on. You wondered if your words or his were the fuel.
“Venable told me you caused quite a ruckus when you got here.”
You grimaced, recalling your punishment of starved time in the cell below.
“Is that a question?”
His eyebrows raised at your snarky retort, his mouth a thin line. He must be getting impatient. You didn’t like this look of him.
“I’m sorry.” You murmured out with a well placed sigh.
“I just... didn’t, and don’t, agree with that rule.”
He hummed noncommittally.
“This outpost has a quite extensive library. So why bother yourself with stealing something as silly as fairytales?”
There was an challenge in his eyes as he continued speaking as he stood.
“Now, at least it wasn’t some cute version, I’ll give you that.”
His steps resounded as he moved to circle behind you. Daring you to follow him with your eyes or a turn of your head but you stayed still.
“How many days did Venable keep you in that cell?”
He placed his hands on the arms of your chair, leaning over to encircle you even further. His presence smothering you as the heat suffocated you even further. You couldn’t tell if it came from him or the fire.
“Hmm? Tell me, was it worth it?”
As his last words left his mouth in a whisper, he leaned in so his mouth was brushing against your hair.
Your breath hitched from his proximity, your skin raised in what felt like a strange mix of fear and anticipation. Your mouth felt dry as you forced yourself to swallow.
“Yes.”
The simple response and all its weight hung heavy in the air as only the sound continued to be the still lively fire to your right. You knew it to be no ordinary thing. Mr. Langdon made no movement, staying torturously close.
After what felt like an eternity, he took in a deep breath through his nose, seeming to breathe you in as much as he was refilling his lungs. You wondered if he even needed to breathe.
You could sense the satisfied smirk and feel the hot air as he leaned in to the shell of your ear.
“Good.”
You were unsure how to respond. Even more unsure if you should.
Mr. Langdon stood upright again, the soft brush of cool air hitting the back of your neck, relieving you as it sent shivers down your spine.
His left hand came into your view and you finally looked up at him, hesitant to instantly take it as much as you wanted to. There was still a part of you that was weary and unsure. Unwilling to not question.
Seeing a polite, disarming smile on his lips, you placed your hand in his, surprisingly warm and soft, and rose from your seat.
He turned your body towards him, the proximity once again sending mixed signals throughout your body. More so excitement now, but still laced with the ever present tendrils of trepidation.
He took his hand from yours but then moved to place it under your chin. Not cupping it in a romantic manner, but like how an adult would do to a pitifully naive child.
Your skin flushed where it met his, like he had the same power as the fireplace before. Something in the back of your mind noted how it had simmered once more. The flames calming as you accepted his extended hand.
Mr. Langdon cocked his head and let his eyes be overrun with clear pity. He even sealed what felt like the overly faux emotion with an empathetic sigh.
“Although life isn’t the fairytale you wished for, try to make the best of it, princess.”
You had to control every muscle in your face to not scrunch your nose at the words that stung like a patronizing slap despite the show of emotions that accompanied them.
Not trusting your tongue, you silently nodded. His fingers dug in for a moment like he was dissatisfied you maintained your composure and was about to lose his. He ripped his hand from your chin with a snarl and turned around to step behind his desk, his eyes roaming the wooden surface as he flexed his fingers, perhaps your touch had pained him.
He pulled out the thin black chair before he paused and looked back up at you, once more a different man than moments before. A Cheshire grin was clear on his face and that same glimmer of mischief back again.
“Oh, one last thing.”
“Yes, Mr. Langdon?” you forced out evenly, trying your best to control the whirlwind of emotions pounding on the door inside your chest to be let out.
“Remember, heed the warning of Snow White. Never trust witches or beautiful apples.”
His sing song voice sounded light like another taunt with his dismissive wave but the look in his eyes turned dark and intense as he lowered himself into his chair. Like he was spurring, no demanding you to remember his words, this moment.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
The somber warning that felt like a thinly veiled threat haunted your bones. He made no other comments to you that day or any other, didn’t even bother to look at you when you two were in the same room or hall.
You thought he had forgotten about you. His amusement snuffed out and attention passed to the others... until the night before Halloween. Or simply, what you were told was Halloween.
You opened your bedroom door to find an unfamiliar book lying open on your pillow. Its golden edges shined in the candlelight as you cautiously stepped forward. A Bible - open to the first page of the Book of Revelation.
Blood red words stood out, written in the margins. You leaned over to get a better look, not daring to touch the holy object that felt tainted with darkness.
‘Was this how you imagined it?’
There was no name nor did you recognize the handwriting but you knew for certain this had come from Mr. Langdon. The smallest amount of heat tickled at the back of your neck.
You laid down, unsure how to react, still unwilling to touch or even close the book. Your skin prickling as though it could sense the heavy feeling of dread in the air.
Once you finally succumbed to an uneasy slumber, you dreamt of the bombs.
Sirens wailed from above as you trekked across an endless forest. Calling for help, voice hoarse as none came. The land turned barren with every step, an ashen land of death. Each moment, the sirens twisted more and more into tormented wails. A torrent of winds coming from each direction, bitter and sharp as knives against your skin.
With a pain in your chest that you could only describe as your heart being torn out piece by piece, you finally crumbled - broken and unable to continue. Weak and unwilling to fight any longer. You looked to the sky to beg for mercy when you saw an open door, its glowing insides the halls of the sanctuary promised to you. As you ran with energy anew, the sultry voice you heard was like a holy instrument carrying through the air.
Mr. Langdon came into vision, still blurred around the edges, you were unable to see him wholly. His forehead and golden locks bloodied from the thorns that encircled his head. One hand extended to you, another behind his back, his words coming to you clearly now as the thorns twisted into sharp horns.
Let me save you.
Let me save you.
Let me save you.
As you reached out your hand to his, the light faded from behind him, instead bringing forward his hidden hand that held a beating, bloody heart. Its steady tempo drowning out his plea as you felt a seeping emptiness consume your chest.
You woke with a start, body drenched in sweat as if you had been hugged by the sun itself. Your mind spun, consumed with a single thought - if the dream had progressed, would you hesitate to take his hand, despite what he had turned into before your eyes?
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Your heart was beating so fast you barely heard a word Venable was sprouting, only snippets of sounds came through between the coursing blood that filled your ears.
Your mouth was practically watering at the sweet smell, the feel of the smooth skin in your hands, the taste you knew would be yours if you only took a bite of the shiny red treasure held within the palm of your hand.
But that voice in the back of your mind was screaming at you, back away into the shadows slowly and whatever you do, do NOT eat the forbidden fruit. It will bring no knowledge, only suffering and agony beyond compare.
Something even further hidden away is telling you to run. Run as fast and as far as you can from this evil place and never, ever look back.
You hear Mr. Langdon’s words over and over in your mind. So powerful, you can almost feel his breath tickling your ear once more, his enticing warmth overtaking your body.
‘Remember, heed the warning of Snow White...
Never trust witches or beautiful apples.’
In what felt like the final step of a test, you decided to pause before sinking your teeth into the apple alongside all the other residents and instead slowly backed into the shadows of the hallway toward the kitchen.
The silence hung in the air, and you were a moment away from turning around when you heard a cough, then another and another, the sounds of shared agonized death building in a crescendo confirmed your fears.
It confirmed that Mr. Langdon somehow knew. And if he knew... why didn’t he stop it?
A thought ran through your head, a darker one biting at its heels, so fast you were unsure it was your own.
Why didn’t I?
...Because they deserved it
You desperately shook your head to rid yourself of the thought and suddenly realized the truth with resolute finality. There was no where to go. No where to run. No one to run to. No matter where you fled, it would be a dead end. Even if you escaped this cave, you would only be thrust into another wasteland, wandering the purgatory above.
You found yourself in the kitchen, unaware your feet had even brought you there. In what seemed to be a final act of mercy, or perhaps penance, you spotted a large butcher knife hanging on the wall.
The metal held tightly in your hand felt like an extension of your body from your place in the corner of the darkened pantry. You had locked yourself in, backed yourself into a corner. But where was there to run - truly, to escape to?
A desperate prayer silently fell from your lips. Not for peace nor forgiveness. But for Mr. Langdon’s capsule of pain free salvation.
Nonetheless, you figure even a knife to the heart would be better than suffering the death forced upon the other residents. At the first sound or sign the killers have noticed your absence, you’ll take yourself out. Death was no longer fearful. It was the undeniable ending you had accepted many months ago.
The sounds of steady steps broke through your contemplation. Your hand stilled as you raised the blade above your chest. Your body was unable to move for some unknown reason even though everything inside you begged you to move already.
This was the end.
Accept it.
Instead, all you could focus on are the sounds of the footfalls. Light but purposeful. Steady and strong, unlike Venable’s wavering trio of steps.
Calm, almost casual. As if they were taking a stroll in a park or admiring paintings in a museum. Unlike the rushed, quick steps of an always determined Ms. Mead.
As your mind caught up with what your heart and instincts knew, a smooth voice broke the silence, its undeniable comfort charging your body with its light.
“You can come out now, Princess.”
You looked up, a mixture of wet and dried tears on your cheeks, and saw a magnificent sight.
There was your savior, a circle of candlelight cradled his golden locks and danced around like a halo on fire. Tears sprung from your eyes once more. Not out of fear, but out of pure awe and admiration.
The knife fell with a loud echoing clang in the now empty stone halls. You could only stare on as Mr. Langdon shifted to lower himself to you.
He brought his right hand from behind his back, and extended it to you.
Without hesitation, this time, you accepted it.
You accepted Him.

"you deserve good things." for whoever strikes your fancy ;D
I realized after I finished this that I don’t actually know if you’ve played Neverwinter Nights 2 before 😅 but it’s written now, so here you go! if you haven’t played NWN2, you should, this game is for me what KOTOR is for you 💖
Etain/Casavir, mutual pining my beloved, sometime in the early days in Crossroads Keep, spoiler-free except for one very vague reference to in-game events
---
Etain found Casavir right where she expected to, in one of the rooms that hadn’t yet been furnished enough to see much use beyond one paladin seeking solitude. This one was fully constructed, at least, and had a fire crackling merrily in the hearth, though it wasn’t quite enough to chase away the chill that seemed to radiate from the very stones of Crossroads Keep.
There was a pile of old furniture against the wall opposite the hearth, some of it little more than splintered wood while others seemed to be fine except for a bit of threadbare upholstery and a lot of dust. Casavir had managed to find a few chairs that were in working condition, and had saved them from their fate as firewood. One of them had been repurposed into a table, holding a well-loved book and a steaming mug, while he sat in another one with a piece of his armor in his lap, meticulously repairing a ripped seam. The rest of his armor lay in a neat pile next to him, his sword and shield propped against the wall next to the fireplace - within reach, as always, just in case.
A third chair sat across from him, empty and inviting. Etain took its presence as offer enough, and slid into it cautiously in case it couldn’t support her weight. It creaked loudly before settling, announcing her arrival with more fanfare than she would have preferred.
Casavir looked up from his sewing, the warmth that bloomed in his pale eyes as they met hers doing more to dispel the cold than the roaring fire. He bowed his head to her, as formal and solemn as always. “Good evening, my lady.”
“Hey.” She flushed at her own comparative lack of decorum, and added a mumbled, “I mean, good evenin’.” He chuckled quietly, the sound clearly intended to be kind rather than mocking, though it also made her blush darker.
“Is there something you need of me?” His voice wasn’t quite hesitant, but it was the closest to it she’d ever heard. While his face betrayed nothing - it rarely did - he tensed, sitting up straighter in his chair. He looked like he was about to reach for his sword, as if he expected trouble; she was starting to realize that he always expected trouble.
In his defense, trouble did tend to find them - and her in particular - more often than could be explained away as coincidence.
“Relax. There’s no emergency or anythin’. I just, um…” Etain bit her lip nervously, digging around in her pocket until she found the little cloth bundle she had hidden in there.
“You what?” he asked patiently. He set his sewing down on the floor next to him and relaxed back into his chair, slowly untensing.
“I have a gift for you,” she said in a rush, thrusting the bundle at him. He took it much more delicately than she had presented it. “A little bird may’ve told me that your morn day was a few days ago. I wanted to get you somethin’.”
The ‘little bird’ had been Katriona, but truly his birthday was just a convenient excuse. She'd bought the gift weeks ago - not that she would tell him that.
Casavir ran his fingers over the soft green cloth square as if trying to map the shape of the item within it before unwrapping it. The corner of his mouth rose with the beginning of a smile, though he didn’t let it fully bloom. “It was kind of you to think of me, my lady, but you did not need to trouble yourself on my account.”
“It’s no trouble. Really.” She laughed as he still made no move to open the gift, and nudged the toe of his boot with her own. “C’mon, open it.”
He studied the cloth for another long moment before carefully unfolding it. In it was a bronze cloak pin about the size of his palm, simple but well-made and shaped like a sword and shield. On the shield was a crescent moon, curved like a bow and crossed by an arrow - the symbol that had been chosen as Etain’s heraldry when she’d been knighted.
His old cloak pin, a dented and battered shield bearing Tyr’s scales, had been his gift to her before her trial, a token of his faith in her that had helped her through one of the darkest nights of her life. But that had been over a month ago, and he hadn’t gotten a new one yet; he’d been using an unadorned one since. It was only appropriate that she replace it, since she’d taken his old one.
Part of her felt like it was arrogant to give Casavir a pin with her own mark on it, but she knew his bond with Tyr was a complicated thing, and his relationship with Neverwinter was tenuous at best, so they were both out of the question. He’d cut so many ties that, when you took those two away, all he had left was… this. This room, this half-ruined keep, and its Harborman commander.
“It’s lovely,” he said eventually, oddly subdued. He traced the crescent on the shield with his forefinger. “I do not deserve--”
He moved like he was about to try and hand it back, and one of her hands shot forward to stop him. He froze as soon as her skin touched his. “Yes, you do. You deserve good things, Casavir. In all the months we’ve known each other, you’ve never asked me for anything.” Sure that he wasn’t going to try and give her gift back, Etain loosened her grip on his hand, though she didn’t pull away completely. “When’s the last time you let yourself want somethin’?”
“What I want…” His hand unfurled under hers, the rough pads of his fingers brushing light as spring rain over her palm before coming to rest at the inside of her wrist, where her pulse raced at a hummingbird pace. His throat bobbed as he swallowed hard, a small catch in his normally smooth, deep voice. “What I want is irrelevant.”
“Not to me.”
He met her eyes again, and he looked at her in a way no one ever had before. The normally wintery blue of his eyes turned as warm and intense as a summer storm, and made her feel the same way, powerful and wild.
The smile Casavir had been holding back finally settled on his lips, small but real. “Etain…”
Someone cleared their throat in the doorway. “Knight-Captain.”
Etain jumped back, her face burning as she realized how far she’d leaned toward him. She turned toward the door, relaxing a little to find it was only Kana. As far as she knew, her right-hand woman wasn’t much for gossip, so there was a small chance that they might be spared from the rumor mill for at least a little longer.
“I apologize for interrupting.” Kana seemed to mean it, though if she had any opinion beyond that she kept it close to the chest. “A group arrived at the gates, and the leader is requesting an audience. He says he knows you.”
“Of course he does,” she muttered sourly, then louder she added, “Thank you, Kana. I’ll be right there.” She saluted and left without another word, and Etain turned back to Casavir and his poorly concealed amusement. “I guess duty calls.”
“It always does,” he said, a hint of either sadness or disappointment behind his voice. He rose to stand, his movements stiff from the unhold hours he probably spent in that chair before she disturbed him. But when he bowed and offered her a hand, the motion was as graceful as ever. “May I accompany you?”
“Are you sure?” Despite the uncertainty in her voice, she still took his hand and let him pull her to her feet. “You were in the middle of somethin’ when I came in.”
Casavir tucked her hand into the crook of his elbow. “It can wait.”
Arm in arm, they left the room to go see what trouble had come to find them this time.

How would you rank the 18 Class Trials from THH, DR2, and V3 from worst to best?
This is... virtually impossible for me, lol. Comparing the trials from each game to each other?
How about I just rank them within each game? That'll make it a little easier for me to deal with...
DR1
6) 5th. It's driven by lies and ultimately rushed to its end before the characters can draw any solid (pointless/meaningless) conclusions. So of course it's last for this game, and it’s probably last for the entire series as well. If there are any saving graces to this trial, it’s the surprise when your closest ally is willing to let our protagonist die... and that this trial contains the fake/bad ending route.
5) 3rd. Although the main culprit is pretty obvious from the jump, it requires some surprising twists to explain how everything got to be the way it turned out. But did I always find those twists plausible? Errrrm... not really.
4) 2nd. Pretty good trial that's hurt for me by the fact that there'd barely be any need for a trial at all if a certain third party didn't dick around with the evidence for no reason. Also, the dual nature of Toko is an incredibly predictable reveal. Without those two aspects dragging it down, though, this could easily go higher.
3) 1st. Sure, the major hint given and, subsequently, the eventual culprit are pretty obvious, but this one establishes so much about how the trials work and how much the details you observe will matter that it’s still pretty fun that first time around. The initial surprise of the first victim makes for a great way to keep you invested in the trial experience. This trial is damn near iconic now, so it feels almost mandatory to respect it.
2) 6th. DR1 still has the best "final trial,” easily. SO MANY great reveals, and they all totally work for me. Nothing rings false or disappointing, and it also features Makoto finally coming into his own and taking the lead. I nearly labeled this my top pick for DR1, but...
1) 4th. It's easily the most emotionally dramatic/satisfying for me, and there’s something weirdly inspirational for me about Hina’s incredibly harsh stance during it. This one GOT ME IN THE FEELS, and in part that was because I saw so little of it coming. After the more predictable elements of the first and third trials, this felt like the writing was firing on all cylinders.
DR2
6) 2nd. You have to accept a couple leaps of logic to make this trial keep flowing, and the fact that trial is ultimately reliant on someone noticing a candy that’s very small and hard to see while the person is also in a stressful situation and they are groggy from being drugged/asleep and it necessitates the person retaining this seemingly useless detail inside their brain .... that’s always bugged me.  The “escape route” conversation even retroactively raises questions about the first trial. Oof. On the upside, the reveals it brought us about Fuyuhiko and Peko were incredibly important, satisfying, and legit surprising turns. And it’s pretty cool how it’s basically a two-for-one combo trial because you have to solve the Twilight Syndrome case before you solve the current case.
5) 3rd. Other people have pointed out the leaps of logic and missing pieces of this trial, but at the same time, the candlelight hanging is so intense and the ultimate reveal of the culprit is such a brutal turn that I have to give it some props. The culprit’s primary plan is ultimately one of the most ingenious in the series, IMO, and definitely one of the most twisted/fucked-up, which earns it some points.
4) 4th. This is probably the single murder case in the franchise that I understood the absolute least about when entering the trial, for better or worse. On the one hand, that made it really fun to see the mystery gradually unfurl, but on the other hand, it made it tough for me to provide the right answers at certain points in the trial, leaving me fumbling. A big part of those issues was how it was initially hard for me to wrap my head around the nature of the funhouse via the provided 2D graphics... but once I eventually got there, I had to respect the creativity that went into devising such a “weapon.” Also, it can be hard to tolerate Komaeda in this trial. He’s even more of a know-it-all-but-reveal-none-of-it jackass than ever before, and his turn towards overt cruelty towards the others (and Hajime in particular) left me raging. The culprit reveal is good, but the motive does beg the question of why he didn’t just come forward from the jump.
3) 6th. There are a lot of great reveals in the final trial that totally reframe how you see the characters, and some of them are deliciously twisted. There’s also a ton of great dialogue provided, and in retrospect, it’s actually sort of neat to have one endgame mastermind reveal in this franchise that doesn’t involve the “They were hiding among us this whole time” trope. All that plus the surprise return of our surviving heroes from the first game! However, this is also where they officially reveal a core element of DR2 and its setting that I've never liked. This knocks the trial down a few pegs for me. Of course, by the time you reach the trial, I'm sure 99% of players have already figured that particular "twist" out. There’s adequate evidence to predict it in the first freaking chapter, and I know this because I DID predict it in the first chapter of my initial playthrough... which further hurts the supposed “reveal” of the island’s true nature when it comes around.
2) 1st. Probably my favorite of the “first trials,” there are lot of components that go into this one. There’s a combination of two premeditated killers plus one spur-of-the-moment accidental victim, there’s a satisfying (though admittedly maybe too easy) reveal of the killer being one of the most unpleasant people to be around during the first chapter, and I really dig how audio became a very important component of the mystery due to the total blackout. This is also the part of the game where we learn just how twisted Komaeda really is, which is HUGE both in terms of its immediate shock factor for a total newcomer and in terms of its impact on the game as a whole. Of course, since it’s a “first trial,” it can’t be too complicated... but they still manage to confuse so many of us with “MEAT ON THE BONE” :P
1) 5th. Again, I will almost always give the most emotionally intense one the top slot. The “traitor reveal” is obviously THAT MOMENT in DR2. I also love how this one used the strange internal logic established early in the game RE: Komaeda’s luck to develop the eventual solution. And forcing us to make use of evidence gathered in multiple locations outside of the immediate site of the body/murder? That more complexity of that type that I see relevant to a trial, the more I appreciate it, and this one has loads of that stuff. Although I guess the investigation isn’t technically part of the trial itself... but it’s still very relevant to it.
DRV3
6) 4th. I found this whole trial to be just... extremely predictable. Maybe it’s because I was so far into the series that I’d gotten used to its tricks by this point, but this was the most predictable trial for me since the first one in the first game. The whole looping/rollover map setup of the VR? Obvious. The murder weapon? Obvious. Our culprit’s ongoing confusion at everything discussed? Obvious. There were only a couple of points I didn’t have already figured out when I walked into the trial room, and those turned out to be basically irrelevant (such as the bottle of poison). The eventual motive is at least a surprise, but I also found it hard to accept that this culprit would really kill people over it. Overall: Super lame.
5) 3rd. Another double murder trial, and once again one murder overshadows the other. The séance murder is definitely clever. Sure, you know the culprit pretty early on, but the methodology is the good part. However, the real fascinating one for me is the art lab “locked room” murder. Going into the trial, I couldn’t fathom how they were going to explain that one, and I found the answer both smart and satisfying. It’s funny to imagine how many times the culprit had to try that stunt with the lock before it actually worked, heh. This is probably the best of the three “double murder” mysteries in the series, but the trial isn’t as emotionally affecting as the 3rd trial in DR2 to me. Moreover, the trial loses points for the most infuriating Hangman’s Gambit of the series and especially for the motive reveal. When the killer’s motive can be boiled down to “they’re basically just a psycho serial killer,” it’s not very interesting.
4) 6th. The first part of the trial, which deals with re-assessing the first case? It’s pretty damn on-point. That leads to the mastermind reveal, which... isn’t great, really. It’s not a terribly interesting character to make the mastermind, they have no interesting motives or characterization to unevil, and they’re ultimately just a pawn behind another, off-screen group of masterminds. But then things get uproariously funny to me. The metatextual stuff is just so goddamn ridiculous. It’s frustrating and annoying how much of our not-mastermind’s explanation is clearly full of lies and half-truths that we’ll never have complete answers on, but that’s also part of what makes it all fascinating. We get to swap protagonists like four times! There’s a fake-out Game Over! These are really cool things. But it all leads down the road of our protagonist arguing that fiction does affect reality (yes, good), that fictional people can still matter (definitely) and that... fictional lives are equal in value to real ones? Uhhhhh slow down there, champ. That only works for YOUR universe, where fictional people can be made out of living, breathing individuals. But in light of the metatextual stuff you’re surrounded by, you kinda sound silly AF right now?
3)  2nd. Look, this is still incredibly irritating to me. Also, if you go down the alternate “lying” route at one point, you are forced to accept that these piranhas were somehow trained to only eat dead things, which is just... so deeply dumb.  But what is good is the entire ropeway conceit (which is a very significant part of the trial!) and the idea of the partition inside the tank. This was a murder with an elaborate, intelligent plan that is very well-executed. And the motive reveal? It’s one of the best in the series! I respect that stuff. (If I had the right to toss the execution in as part of the soup, I’d say that it’s also one of the series’ best. Let’s call it the icing on the cake.)
2) 1st. The writing that made this trial work is undeniably clever. The way the narration told us exactly what was happening without really telling us what was happening? It was a masterstroke of both great writing and perfect localization coming together. When it becomes clear during the trial what is about to happen, it’s a huge shock. The transition to another protagonist with the lights flickering out and back on is beautiful. Even the core concept of a protagonist who was willing to step up and try to kill the mastermind immediately is just deeply interesting. And obviously this one made my emotions run high. HOWEVER! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Kaede Akamatsu was a more interesting, unique, and compelling protagonist than Shuichi Saihara ever was. Ultimately, the protagonist-swap, no matter how well-written, was a mistake because they shifted us from a unique character with an interesting new perspective to a character who is, in many ways, “Makoto Naegi with even less self-esteem.” Yes, I know he has aspects that make him distinct as his own person, but there’s still just too much there that feels like we’ve done it before, and he never fully escapes from that. It feels like a massive waste and a huge missed opportunity to ditch Kaede like this. Now, if they had just done the protagonist swap in reverse — making us start out with Shuichi before flipping things over to Kaede — we could’ve had ourselves something amazing here.
1) 5th. I know I decided that I couldn’t rank all among each other, but if I did do that, I feel confident that the 5th trial in DRV3 would rank very high indeed. You go into the trial unable to even determine who the victim was due to the fact that two people are missing and there was nothing left of the body that spoke to an identity. Going into it, you naturally figure that one of the two missing parties has to be the victim and the other one is probably the culprit. But even with just two friggin’ suspects, the amount of turnabouts in the case that made me rethink all my assumptions was insane. Sure, the explanation for how the person inside the Exisal can maintain “character” is pretty damn thin, but once you get past that, I don’t think there’s a single false note in the trial. It even breaks unprecedented ground by continuing into another Non-Stop Debate after everyone has already voted. And of course, it culminates with a lot of intense emotion. Even the execution is emotionally satisfying! ..... although I’m not sure if I should count the execution as part of the trial, but hey, still. As far as Dangan trials go, the fifth one in DRV3 is basically a masterpiece.

WU SUCKS but not the reason you think
I'd like to preface by saying Wu has made a lot of mistakes and should be held accountable. But like the main arguments against Wu be like.
1: Morro
2: Traumatizing kids
3: Keeping secrets
4: Mot treating his nephew like is damn nephew.
5: Flirting with his brothers wife.
And the thing about that needs talked about. 1:Morro. First off getting kids hopes is not cool. It can be detrimental to development depending on the age of the child. BUT. Not a single soul told Morro to train tirelessly for 60+ years after his death to take revenge and be the green ninja. Absolutly no one. Wu had compassion for his failings and wanted to show Morro he could still he great without being the green ninja. But the little brat ran tf off and got trapped and died. And he got cursed, how- we dont know. But its implied that it's either intentional entrapment or you have to be a terrible person, guess which category he probably falls into. Mind you Wu also told our OGs that they could also be the green ninja and none of them went off the rails to settle some invisible score. Morro made his choices and he made shit ones. Wu was an influence but not the problem. Morro is unstable, dramatic, and holds grudges Wu didnt cause that.
2: the traumatic experiences the nina go through are also not exactly his fault. He didnt just pick them off the streets. THERE WAS A PROPHECY. Ok? Yall with me. Fate isnt uncontrolled by anyone the ninja needed to be trained to help Lloyd fight the Overlord. That wasnt his decision. And yall act like the ninja couldn't leave whenever they wanted to. He didnt gaslight them or belittle them in anyway that wasnt for teaching. Please bring me receipts if you think otherwise. I do admit he could help a little more, be more clear, but when has a old magic teacher character ever been straightforward. With that logic fuck Dumbledore, and Gandalf, and any wise old teacher that goes to find chosen one who once again are chosen by fate not the master himself. Yall literally cant blame Wu for Child's Play and you cant blame Wu for their experience with Nadakhan either. The enemies that go out of there way to attack the ninja are not a direct cause if Wu himself. Usually. It be like blaming Garmadon for Chen. Yes they had history but it's still not his fault
3: Secrets. I will admit there is next to no reason for keeping secrets from the ninja. Considering history always has kind of score to settle. But considering his age and the apparent imprisonment or death of his past enemies there no way to predict every problem that comes back to screw him over. The Time Twins for example. Yes they came back for Wu. But he did remove their powers and separated them over 20+ years ago. They were not exactly threats to his new students now were they? Again with Aspheera, who was literally locked in a tomb why take the time to educate the ninja on a problem he had no idea was going to come back for him. Same with Morro to a more confusing degree. MORRO DIED. How was he to prepare the ninja for that? Yes please tell me how they were supposed to prepare for a dead guy. I'll wait.........k. he should be more forthcoming with the ninja, about things he knows could harm them, like the Serpentine after Lloyds released them, Chen, the Overlord, the effects of Travelers Tea, Tomorrow's Tea, Oni, Etc. But most of the time the ninja go and do it first then wonder why Wu didn't warn them.
4: His nephew. Wow his parenting sucks. Morro is not his damn child let's start there. Comparing their relationship is unfair. Wu cared for Morro the way he cares for Kai and Nya. He never accentuates a paternal relationship with then. Cause they are students, students he has to train with he intent to send them out onto dangerous battle fields and mind games. He was alone so yes it looks different but it's also a leap to just assume that Wu viewed Morro as his own despite treating him the exact same way as his 6 other students. Now back to Lloyd. Why didnt he get his nephew from Darkleys where it was known he ran away from multiple times? I DONT KNOW. No one does. That is a bad move I can only theorize about. Maybe Misako said something about staying away, maybe he wasnt kept in the loop about his nephews whereabouts due to idk KICKING HIS FATHER INTO HELL. C'mon yall. Now in the later seasons my best guess is that he doesnt know how to differentiate his nephew from the chosen one side and the goofy child side. Hes never had a child and his early relations with Lloyd were scarce and when Lloyd came to live with him. It's not due to some familial obligation, destiny literally called for it. Putting some definite strain on their relationship. I'm not excusing it he should try better, but he'd have to build a relationship from nothing and most people know their immediate family upon birth or during childhood which is not the case here. Wu treats his nephew more like a vessel of power than a person which isnt cool but knowing that the kid might not come back after every fight is a good damper on happy relationships is it not?
5: Misako. Good lord I don't have to explain this one. No excuse. It shouldn't be happening. BUT. After Garmadons death she was a free woman as gross as it is. It's more a flaw on her than it is him she chose to have a baby with one brother and still try to get with the other. And I know it takes two to tango but dont get mad at the idiot that the cheater is cheating with. Be mad at the cheater. The thing people really dont get about love triangles. The "other guy" brings on the questions/options but the person who cant choose or screws with both parties is the one in the wrong. Lloyd seems ok with it. Because Tommy said so. I dont particular give two shits about his take on the show half the time. If Lloyd were actively against it the Wu would probably stop. If the Fsm family acted like a normal ass family we probably wouldnt be here. But their priorities are a little screwy compared to typical nuclear families. Not an excuse just some perspective
NOW, why he is a bad character despite all of those arguments. he chooses to train soldiers rather than care for impressionable teens. Yes the situation called for it but the pressure could he alleviated if he decided to actually help before the world was on fire. He chooses to teach by experience than be upfront. Which works sometimes but not when actual lives are at stake. His trial by fire teaching works but the possiblity it could go wrong is to big to be brushed aside. His seemingly unreachable vault of empathy is hard to swallow. He rarely actually feels things for other people, his lack of enthusiasm when they pull through something hurts to watch. His lack of empathy about raising his nephew to attempt to kill his father is frightening. The pride he demonstrates by choosing not to disclose his past until it's too late is dangerous. He doesnt directly put down the ninja unless he has to and its more implied than anything and is on his students and this fandom for taking it so harshly. He trusts them a lot because he doesnt see them as kids anymore. They are warriors and it was necesary. He should have more compassion. He should be more straight forward, he should try to act like a person and not some ethereal being of elsewhere that doesn't have time to appease feelings or care about people until after hes wronged them. His values are off kilter sometimes which is whatever until it starts to hurt people
But yall need to stop blaming him for other people actions. Morro was a mess to begin with. His problems are in the past because he took care of them already. Misako came onto him. (He should have resisted but he didnt start shit she did). He needs to try to be an uncle alongside being a teacher. He needs to act like a fucking person more than the infinite cache of wisdom and unforeseen unused power that he acts like. And also it's a kids show. How many children think the way yall do?, we're teens/YAs we're reading into things. A LOT which makes everything more complicated. Comments rebuttals open. There's a collection of little mistakes hes made along the way that dont fit into these categories but these are the main reasons I know people hate him and the little things add fuel to the fire. I will legit talk about anything Except for the morro thing I am so tired of seeing it Morro made his choices hes a fucking Villain Wu didnt make him that way being a bitter asshole did that. Thanks for reading!! :3

MLQC Season 2 Chapter 15 (Kiro’s Chapter) Part 3 [Land of Map Country] Translation [CN]
I’ve mentioned before in an earlier post about how s2ch15 is the BEST Kiro chapter I have ever read so far in MLQC. This part 3 is the start of it all.
Thanks again for helping @link4eva
***Once again DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO BE SPOILED!!!***
Enjoy~
For the previous translation of Chapter 15: Part 1, Part 2.
[Land of Map Country]
Tumblr media
The footsteps behind me suddenly sped up as if they were close. I stepped forward without hesitation and quickly jumped into the tram.
The tram closed its doors at the same time and started to move.
I looked out the window behind me with lingering fears but saw no one.
Kiro: Don’t worry, he can’t catch up to you. This is a superhero’s car.
Kiro seemed to read my thoughts and comforted me in a relaxed voice.
I steadied my breathing, looked around the car, and found that the monitor on the roof was lit with red dots, so I turned off the map and waved to it.
Tumblr media
MC: Thanks for all the help, superhero!
Kiro: Eh? Wasn’t that already obvious?
He deliberately dragged out his words to show disappointment which made me instantly laugh.
Kiro: I thought you would make a long list about how you really feel right now.
MC: True emotions can be said face-to-face.
Hearing my words, Kiro was silent. After a long time, he laughs and replies to me in a low voice.
Kiro: I’ll remember what you said.
Kiro: I have controlled the route of this tram and it will bring you safely to my side.
Kiro: Next, Miss Chips will have a good rest in the car and she will arrive at her destination soon.
“Soon”…
I was taken aback for a moment and felt a somewhat uneasy.
Do I really want to see Kiro? Why did he hide during this time?
I glanced out of the window and the fog blurred the boundary between heaven and earth, looking chaotic and at a loss.
To this day, I still don’t know why Kiro suddenly put on the “Helios” mask, but I am quite sure what must have happened.
He is like a Rubik’s cube, its colors shuffled with different secrets scattered on each side. ***Sidenote: What an absolutely perfect analogy to describe Kiro!***
No matter how hard I try, I can’t put together a complete Kiro.
He seemed to have carried many secrets and heavy responsibilities from the beginning.
I know that everyone has secrets and they don’t want to show them to others.
He didn’t want to tell them, so I didn’t ask.
Because of an adult’s self-righteous maturity and tacit understanding. Because he is afraid of touching the corners he does not want to touched….
Because I am afraid of being hated.
And in this way, it seems that the distance between us is gradually drawn further.
I took a deep breath and decided to abandon those inexplicable adult principles and looked at the surveillance with a sincere expression.
Even if he will be hated, I have to hold on tightly to his hand.
Tumblr media
MC: Kiro, I miss you very much.
MC: Although I don’t know why you left suddenly, but now that you found me, I’m really happy.
MC: In fact, I have been looking for you all this time and I have been looking forward to seeing you.
MC: No matter what happens to you or what you become, I don’t care.
MC: To me, a healthy Kiro is the most important thing.
There was silence over the collar. After a long time, there was small, low voice.
Kiro: MC, I….I miss you too.***Sidenote: WAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! TAT***
Kiro: I have also been looking forward to meeting you at that time. You may not believe it but I missed you much more than you can imagine.
His voice is very soft, but I can hear it very clearly.
During this time, the tram came to a halt slowly and I found that it stopped at the door of a department store near the city center.
Kiro: MC, go to the underground parking lot.
His voice was muffled and a little nostalgic.
Kiro: You can just follow the No.2 safe passage and go down. The signal in the underground parking lot isn’t good…..I’ll have to cut off the communication for now.
MC: Okay, I’ll go in right away.
Kiro:…Mm. Miss Chips, goodbye.
Kiro: Also, to “see” you again, I am very happy.
As soon as his voice fell, the collar was completely silent. My heart felt a little strange but I quickened my pace nonetheless.
Maybe he listened to what I said just now.
Thinking of this, I started running, wanting to see him even sooner.
Running out of the safe passage, I saw a figure standing at the door.
Tumblr media
MC: Kiro!
I ran and leaped forward. The figure paused, then slowly turned around, revealing a sharp profile—
At the moment I met his eyes, my footsteps became slower and slower, and I finally stopped in the open space a few meters away from him, unable to smile.
Tumblr media
MC:….Helios.
Helios looked straight at me. The indifference between his brows and eyes made my heart feel weak.
Why is this happening?
He clearly said just now, “I’m looking forward to meeting you.” Is it a temporary remorse? Or can he only face me in this way?
I couldn’t hold his cold gaze and lowered my head in a daze.
That invisible line seemed to have shown up again, between me and him.
No wonder his tone was so helpless and low just now. No wonder he never mentioned meeting with me.
He still remained in the circle of the map and refused to come to me.
Helios looked at me, concealing the complex emotions in his eyes and his mouth became a sharp thin line.
Helios: From the look on your face, you really don’t want to see me.***Sidenote: DAMN!!! TALK ABOUT A COMPLETE 180 JUST LIKE THAT!!!***
I took a deep breath, smiled and raised my head.
MC: How could that be! I think it’s a coincidence, Helios, meeting you here like this.
No matter what kind of him, he is him. If Kiro only wants to face me in this way, then I will do so with sincerity.
He turned and strode towards the depths of the parking lot but something seemed to flash in his eyes.
I ran to keep up and walked to his side.
He didn’t wear a collar, so he should be a “human” card. I deliberately kept my distance from him to avoid accidentally touching him.
MC: Helios, where are we going?
Helios: It’s “I”, not “we”.
Tumblr media
MC:…..
I frowned but since he didn’t flat-out refuse me, I just assumed he accepted that I would act with him.
Soon we walked into a fire control room.
Helios stopped in front of an unremarkable wooden door in the room. He took a key from the door frame and opened the wooden door.
Behind it seems to be a utility room. The space isn’t large.
MC: What are we…”you” doing here?
Helios: Last time you said that you want to investigate the hunter game and the lighthouse. Are there any results?
Tumblr media
MC:…..
MC: Helios, the conversation should be about you and me, not selectively ignoring each other’s problems.
Helios: Let me ask again, what is the relationship between the hunter games and the lighthouse?
I calmed down my emotions and explained my conjecture about their relationship based on the overall situation.
He listened without saying a word and squinted when he heard that the hunter game might be related to opening the lighthouse.
Helios: According to you, the hunter game relies on powerful Evol energy fluctuations to open the lighthouse.
MC: Yes.
Helios: How did you open the lighthouse last time?
MC:….. After being pricked, there was a “click” and I fell.
He frowned and looked at me with a confused look.
Helios: Describe all the events that occurred at that time.
Helios: Start from when you squatted by the stone slab.
MC: Were you close by?
My eyes lit up and looked at Helios. Hearing my question, he instantly stopped.
Helios: Don’t ask boring questions, just say it.
MC:….I just squatted there, carefully looked at the slab for a while, then reached out and touched it.
MC: It’s like it was alive and then I found a cut on the palm of my hand and my feet lit up.
MC: Then I felt the ground under my feet moving along with the sound of gears turning and I fell.
Tumblr media
MC: And then, I met you.
He raised his eyebrows, showing a familiar expression of disdain.
Tumblr media
Helios: Blindly feeling your way around without knowing what’s hidden, how foolish.
MC: It was just a matter of trial and error.
***Sidenote: Had to look these above quotes up online cuz Google Translate wasn’t making any sense and found out it was an idiom. Basically, Helios thought it wasn’t wise for MC to just reach out and touch things without knowing what would happen afterwards. I hope I interpreted it right***
He ignored me, turned around and took out a sealed test tube container.
Helios: Reach out your hand.
I do not know why he said this.
He took out the knife he carried close to his body and quickly cut my finger with a sharp movement. I didn’t even feel any pain.
Helios: Drip the blood in by yourself.
MC: …..
Although I was very confused, I obediently dripped the blood from my finger into the glass test tube according to his instructions.
Worried that it wasn’t enough, I squeezed my finger a little bit harder.
Tumblr media
Helios: What are you doing?
He snatched the test tube, furrowed his eyebrows and stared at me.
MC: What? Didn’t you say to drip blood into it?
Tumblr media
Helios: …..
Maybe it was my very calm attitude that made him speechless, but his mouth was slightly open and he didn’t say anything.
In the end, he just lowered his head and opened the paper bag in his hand, took out the iodine and band-aids from it, and threw them to me.
MC: You forgot again. No matter what you say or do, I trust you.
There was a momentary pause in his fingertips, trembling slightly. He didn’t speak but he knew what I was talking about.
Whether you are Kiro or Helios, yes, it’s all the same to me.
My heart will always trust you unconditionally.
Helios watched in silence as I bandaged my finger, took out a small knife, turned the hilt and handed it to me.
Helios: Keep this with you.
I looked at the heavy knife which made me feel somewhat distant but familiar.
A long time ago, I also received this knife.
Many things are like a circle. I thought I had walked for a long time, but I found that I had come to a certain corner where I had left.
Tumblr media
MC: Is this kind of self-defense alone really enough?
Helios: No need to repay me.
I quickly took the knife and saw him turning around to leave the room and I hurriedly followed after him for a few steps.
He stopped, making me pause mid-step, then he put his hand on the doorknob, horizontally in front of me.
Helios: Stay in here, I put enough aerosol in it.
MC: If you’re going to solve the hunter game, I can help you.
Helios: I said no need.
Helios: I will end this game in my own way.
He didn’t give me time to speak and took a big step back, closing the door of the utility room with a “bang”.
“Click--”
The door was locked.

In Defense of Defense Tests
For those of you that are wondering “Why is it that my score seems to vary wildly whenever I try a defense test? What exactly do I need to score high?” I present a not-so-light analysis based on the Water Defense test that ran from 16 Jan 2021 - 31 Jan 2021.
This will get end up bit long winded, so I will keep most of it under the cut. I don’t say for certain if this is 100% correct, as this is only based on one sample size of tests. To summarize what I will detail below, what seems to be the key to getting an SSS from our repeated trials is:
Last until Turn 5 (ending on first attack is recommended),
Take ~30k in damage (unless ending on second attack, ~32k),
Have ~60% of health remaining (unless ending on second attack, ~55%).
Minimize taking Neutral/Weak damage as much as possible
Tumblr media
Over the course of the two weeks that Water Defense was accessible in game, we attempted the test 125 times (of which 10 were SSS, 98 were SS, and 17 were S) and screen recorded each one. I watched each battle and collected the data points I believed would be a significant factor in determining the Score:
Remaining HP
Total HP(Initial HP + Heals)
Enemy Total HP
Total Damage Dealt
Total Enemy Damage Dealt
Number of [Neutral] Attacks
Number of Enemy [Neutral] Attacks
Second Turn 5 Attack (Y/N)
Most of these factors are obvious, as this is a Defense Test, and as the other mods and I have stated before, it’s imperative to last until Turn 5 with enough health leftover. What I am looking for in this analysis is something more specific.
Let’s look at four examples that I’ve sorted in Remaining HP order:
Tumblr media
This was the highest score captured that did a total damage of 82220 against the enemy, and took 25097 points of damage. The Remaining HP was approximately 65% of the Total HP
Tumblr media
This attempt had the second highest Remaining HP value, but because it ended on Turn 4, the score dropped as expected. It did 74872 damage against the enemy, and took 24194 points of damage. The Remaining HP was approximately 66% of the Total HP
Tumblr media
Out of the three SSS scores here, this was the lowest SSS score, with approximately 62% of the Total HP leftover. This test caused 86117 in damage and took 26820 points of damage.
Tumblr media
Finally, this attempt was the only one of these four that ended on the final attack of turn 5. That explains the dip in the Remaining HP, only retaining approximately 58% of the Total HP. It did more damage than the first example above, but less damage than the third example (85612). It also received the highest enemy damage (29802)
These help show the variability of the results.
Why point these out? Doesn’t it make sense that the more you last, the higher your remaining HP, the better your score?
Yes, but lets delve deeper-
In the Basic Tests, in general all you need is:
Overkill on Turn 3 or Turn 4
At least three duos
At least 80% in the battle gauge
I plan to find what the thresholds we need for a score of SSS on Defense Tests. Before I start throwing this into my statistical software, this is what I believed was needed by simply eyeballing the dataset:
Last until Turn 5
At most 30k in damage from enemy
At least 60% of health remaining
Tumblr media
First things first, I imported the data into my statistical program and looked at distributions.
Tumblr media
Sexy~
The distributions themselves don’t really give me the information I want, however. It just lets me take a look at what kind of distribution I might be working with. The Total Score and the Percent Health Left do tend to barely look like normal distributions, so that is a start.
Next, I created a model based on the factors that I’ve collected, with the Total Score as my response variable, the thing we’re looking for. I won’t go too far into statistical jargon, but using a stepwise model, I was able to remove a few of the factors that weren’t significant. Namely the Enemy Total HP and Number of [Neutral] Attacks. I had already discounted these two before I even ran the model, so I was pleased to see that my software thought the same.
The model of significant factors I ended up with were:
Total Damage Dealt
Total Enemy Damage Dealt
Number of Enemy [Neutral] Attacks
Second Turn 5 Attack (Y/N)
And a calculated column of the % of Health Remaining
I’m a visual person, so I made another chart based on these factors:
Tumblr media
(Total Damage Dealt was the least significant of all the other factors, so I opted to look at it with the Total Enemy Damage. Number of Enemy [Neutral] Attacks will also be covered below.)
Just by the pretty colors and shapes alone, you can see that scores that reached 20k or above tended to be on the first attack of Turn 5, take less than 30k damage, and over 60% health remaining.
Hey, I’d say my eyeballing was good!!
Within this batch of attempts, only three of our SSS scores didn’t follow this pattern. Two of them ended on the second attack of Turn 5. The third one is a battle that mimicked the results of many of the other SSS tests before it, but took in about 3k more damage than the rest.
Doesn’t that mess with your prediction?
N-no! Don’t call me out like that! (>3<)/
The two that ended on the second attack still was within the margin of error for my prediction, taking no more than 32k in damage, and having approximately 57% of health left.
One other aspect to keep in mind, although it sounds obvious is minimize taking weak/neutral damage. This was not something I was looking at originally, but I found that there was a difference in score when we took 1 Neutral attack vs 2 or 3 Neutral attacks. (We took no Weak damage)
That third attempt that skewed my prediction finished the battle with approximately 59% of its Health remaining. Oo, so close. But based on the other attempts with similar Health, Damage Taken, etc, it should not have gotten a score of SSS. Yet it did. Why?
Because unlike the other battles that ended in a similar position, that battle only took one neutral attack from the enemy, instead of two or three. Out of the 10 SSS scores, 7 of them completed taking only one neutral attack, while 3 took two.
Based on this quick analysis, both visual inspection and effect screening, I have the hypothesis I presented at the beginning. Statisticians don’t like to deal in absolutes, so this will always be just a theory.
Tumblr media
I hope this was at least interesting, I know it was a lot of numbers. I tried to avoid jargon and simplify most things, but there’s just so many interesting points to find when you’re going through so many of these battles!
As with all games, there is a bit of RNG that plays into it that I may have missed. Does it matter that Malleus buffed twice in one battle, but only once in another? Maybe. Do I want to go back through 125 battles to determine that? Absolutely not.
I’d close with saying that although I laid out what is most likely required, this does not mean that it’s not possible to get the SSS score in other ways. Finishing on the 4th turn with more HP remaining is quite possible. But in order to spread out and hone in on a more accurate threshold, there would need to be more occurrences of 4th turn SSS, and we were unable to do that during the Water Defense Test.
Perhaps next time! I look forward to updating my assumptions when I collect data from the All Defense Test~

Top 10 Games of 2021
As usual, here are my favorite games that I played over the year, not necessarily ones that came out in 2021.
I’ve decided not to include Deltarune chapter 2, because it’s technically part of the same game I already awarded last time, but know that it’s incredible. Now, the annual list!
10. Mario Party Superstars
After half a dozen disappointing Mario Parties, we finally got what fans have been begging for. While there are still some glaring issues, such as the completely busted coin economy and some puzzling minigame choices, I’ve been having a blast with my friends.
9. New Pokemon Snap
At last, a fantastic sequel to the original fun novelty. It’s so charming to see Pokemon living their normal lives in the world. From many of my favorites to some surprising, often forgotten pokes, I enjoyed discovering the many secrets in this relaxing game.
8. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX
While BDSP disappointed many with its faithfulness taken to a fault, the Mystery Dungeon remake had the perfect mix of new and old. While it stuck to the original three generations of Pokemon like the original game did, it also added all evolutions of those Pokemon that appeared later, such as Mamoswine and Sylveon. As a result, the roster felt totally natural. The QoL additions are much appreciated, and there’s so much content to explore. I loved the music, too; the remixed medley of songs from Gates to Infinity is absolutely lovely, even though I hadn’t played that one. I could easily see myself pouring dozens more hours into this.
7. GameCenter CX 2
AKA Retro Game Challenge 2. Such a shame the original was the only to get officially localized. The experience of playing games with your friend, looking up tips in magazines, and waiting for new game releases as a kid is done so well in this charming nostalgia trip. They could have easily made all of these simple minigames, but they’re all legitimately fun games in their own right. I haven’t even touched the RPG yet, but it’s apparently a full thing with legitimately interesting mechanics.
6. Yooka-Laylee
You heard me right! As a huge fan of Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie, I was looking forward to this, but then put it off for a long time in fear of disappointment. But despite hearing all the complaints, I gave it a fair shot at last, and you know what? I loved it. It’s exactly what I wanted it to be! I honestly don’t understand the hate it gets. If anything, I wish it had more levels. The space one was so cool, and I even loved the casino level. It’s a proper Banjo game in my books, and I’m bummed that the sequel wasn’t also a 3D platformer.
5. Pokemon Card GB2
Another game that tragically didn’t get an English release. The Pokemon TCG was already done well on GBC, and the sequel continues it by including the entire original game’s island, plus a whole new one. The addition of even a single new expansion adds a lot of variety to the game. And that soundtrack! Wow! The normal Team GR battle theme is one of the best Pokemon songs, forever trapped on a Japan-exclusive spinoff game. More people need to hear it.
4. A Short Hike
The definition of “charming.” True to its title, you can see just about everything in the game in an hour or two, but what a lovely hour or two you’ll have. What else to say other than it makes me feel warm inside?
3. Lisa: The Painful
The complete opposite of my last pick. Equal parts depressing and hilarious, this bizarre game gave me an unforgettable ride. On top of the dark humor, the game’s also a lot of fun, with many unique party members. I can’t get the Shenmue grunt sound effect song out of my head.
2. Final Fantasy XIV
Hoo boy. It was really difficult to decide between this and my #1 pick. I had never played an MMO before, and never thought it would appeal to me. But when a friend started the free trial over the summer, I figured eh, I’ll give it a shot. And boom, now it’s half a year later and I’m going to themed cafes with guildmates. My idea of MMOs had always been grinding to fight difficult bosses with minimal story. I didn’t expect to fall in love with a fascinating world. I’ve joined a wonderful free company (read: guild) and made many great friends through it. I’m having the time of my life, and I can’t wait to start Shadowbringers soon.
1. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
This is the kind of game you wish you could experience for the first time again. Not since 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors have I had my mind blown to such a degree. There are many mystery games that make less sense the more you think about them, but 13 Sentinels is a game that rewards you for connecting the dots. I love how many times I looked into the timeline and realized how everything fit together. Rather than just outright lying to the player, which makes mysteries feel cheap, the game gives you multiple perspectives. What seems like the obvious truth to one character then plays out entirely differently when you see it from another angle. All of this on top of a kaiju-fighting mecha RTS game that’s surprisingly fun once you get the hang of it, which has tons of postgame levels. If you’re not into visual novels, you may become bored from the tons and tons of story. It’s definitely a VN at heart. But if you’re into mysteries involving sci-fi tropes like giant robots and time travel, this love letter to them is an incredible experience.

Dear 91teivos,
Mod Vera: Thanks! Everyone in the world is going through some kind of existential crisis, so it made sense for the AA characters to join the party! (And since it was another follower who gave us the idea, we might just keep that idea in the think that after all...)
Tumblr media
Dear dawsongfg,
Mod Vera: No need to apologize! We like to space out letters from specific people a little, but we’ll answer as many as we can!
Tumblr media
(Referenced Letter)
Dear Bluedragoncody,
Co-Mod: Don’t worry.  I doubt they’ll have much luck against the Ace Attorney crew, even without the Proto Badger.  They have the ultimate weapon against despair in their arsenal, after all.
Tumblr media
...They’re doomed, aren’t they?
I can’t make any promises, but if I ever gain enough skill in the art of animation (which has been a dream of mine for a long time, it turns out), I’ll keep that idea in mind.
Tumblr media
Dear skibot99,
Mod Vera: Probably Tumblr bein’ weird. (What else is new?)
Tumblr media
Dear sheeeesh,
Mod Vera: Mods get brought on as needed, as you can see with the arrival of Mod Edgeworth! Also, DGS2 is one of the few AA titles I’ve never played, but rest assured. Where there’s a letter, there’s a Mod who can answer it!
Mod Edgeworth: To add to Mod Vera, even if you weren’t accepted during any mod applications, that doesn’t mean you have lost all chances. I applied early January and lost to Mod Vera. Regardless, Co-Mod informed me that, even though I was rejected, he saw my potential and kept me in mind for if I was ever needed. Now, here I am.
Just because you get rejected, that doesn’t mean it’s game over. Show that you have potential and make yourself known by sending letters to us. That is what I did, after being rejected. I made myself known to the mods by sending letters. We do read them and they tell us how much you know the characters and games of AA more than any application. Of course, you must also follow the guidelines. That just goes without saying.
Co-Mod: I think my actual words were something like “Don’t tell anyone, but you were my second choice.”  But yeah, what they said is true -- becoming a Mod here, like many things, may or may not happen to you, but you can definitely increase your chances by waiting patiently and demonstrating your potential.
As for DGS2 letters, I’m afraid those are still off-limits unless you know of a way to play or watch the game in its entirety, translated into English.  I guess I could check to see if the Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2 channel finished translating...
Tumblr media
(Translation: Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?!  ...D-Don’t tell me?!)
...Okay, looks like I have some watching to do.  Don’t know how I missed that.
So, uh...  That part in bold was what I was going to say.  Now that both games are finally getting an official English version, all I can say is, hang tight!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Previous Post)
Dear Inferno again,
Co-Mod: Yeah, I agree.  I was just joking around.  For anyone who didn’t catch it, that was a reference to Sbemail #108.
The event’s technically over, but we’ll answer the rest of the April Fools’ Day letters when they reach the bottom of the queue.  I’m as eager to see Trucy’s reaction to the news (after the stunned silence) as anyone else, after all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Video in Letter -- Strong Language Warning)
Dear Ella,
Mod Edgeworth:
Tumblr media
I can’t see the first link and....
Tumblr media
How did you find this masterpiece and where can I play this game?
Co-Mod: We don’t check for direct messages on Tumblr, if that’s what you’re referring to, so it wouldn’t have made any difference anyway.  You can always send links in your letters, of course.
Tumblr media
(Previous Post)
Dear Inferno,
Mod Edgeworth: That mad lad would be me and thank you.
Tumblr media
I like to put my heart and effort when answering these letters. With this one, I figured you wanted to see Trucy in costume, so I just searched up an image on Google for the Ancient One’s costume, a sprite of Trucy and a bald head to put on her. The rest I photoshopped on GIMP.
We’re still going through letters from January. Hopefully we will get the rest of yours soon enough.
Tumblr media
Mod Edgeworth: Thank you very much. Your support and the others’ support that have liked, commented and reblogged it mean a lot. As you have stated, a majority of the fandom seem to consider him the worst. I’d like to think it’s because how AA had created this villain of a character to be universally hated was pure genius. Not even the Phantom gets this much hate… and that’s saying something.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, I’d like to keep my real identity outside this blog a secret. I write a lot of letters here and I don’t want to break the spell for anyone. Think of it like a Disney theme park. The cast that play the characters will never admit their true identities, outside of family and close friends, to prevent the experience from being ruined. I want to do the same as a Mod. I don’t want to break the spell of writing to your favorite AA characters. This blog had helped me through my tough times and I want to help everyone else as a mod.
However, I will answer your letters and, if you post anything on your account, a mysterious friend I know may linger and give you a like ;)
Tumblr media
(Previous Letter)
Dear Ali S. Fakenamington,
Co-Mod: Beautifully so.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Previous Letter)
Dear Sinyove,
Mod Edgeworth: That letter was made in 2012 before AA5 and AA6, which was WAY before I became a part of the AA fandom. I’m certain a lot of us were not here when this letter was made, except maybe Co-Mod, but you’ll have to speak with him about this. I will say that the mod that answered this is no longer working here... I think. At the very least, I haven’t heard from him.
That being said, AA4 or Apollo Justice was the first AA game I’ve ever played. Despite all of the hate I saw towards that game, I still loved it regardless. Though, having not played the trilogy, playing the tutorial of AJ was a pain in the ass. I remember going to YouTube to find out how to beat it, because it was so hard. I also played it on PC.
I do see where The Mod was coming from. Had the two sequel games never existed, Apollo Justice would have more holes than my brothers’ socks. My only critique is that Phoenix wasn’t any better either with having Mia babysitting him during almost every trial AND investigations. Hell, Phoenix needed Mia to know how to talk to a kid, talk to a perverted old man, almost gave up in most of his trials in the first game and never conducted a trial without Mia until Turnabout Goodbyes when Maya literally couldn’t summon her. For the most part, Apollo was doing fine on his own without Phoenix, with only Trucy assisting him for the two middle trials, only almost giving up once and Phoenix having assisted him during times when Apollo was not in a normal situation (like when the criminal turned out to be his own co-council/mentor or when he had to lead a trial that included the Jury System). That’s more than Phoenix ever did on his own in the first two games and I think Apollo deserves more credit than he got in that letter in my opinion.
Tumblr media
For me, Apollo Justice is one of those games you either like or you hate. I love it for what it is. My least favorite AA game would have to be Ace Attorney Investigations, the first game. The second one is my absolute favorite.
Co-Mod: Sadly, I haven’t seen or heard from the Mod in a while, so it may be time for us to declare him MIA again.
Tumblr media
Erm...  Sorry, poor choice of words.
I’m fairly certain I wasn’t around 5 years long ago, but I have to say, Capcom did a great job of making Apollo and his story more interesting over time.  He may not be Phoenix, but he certainly carried his legacy forward pretty well, both as an attorney and as an Ace Attorney protagonist.
Now, WHAT ABOUT ATHENA ALREADY!?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dear BDC,
Co-Mod: It fits like a glove, if you ask me...although it also kind of reminds me of 101 Dalmatians.  And thanks for that bit of info!  I never get tired of watching people enjoying the fun dialogue and plot twists of Ace Attorney, so I might have to look him up.
I’m not sure I feel the same about watching Dahlia’s voice actress, though.  I’m sure she’s a nice person and all, but the thought of hearing that voice for so long...  *shudder*
Tumblr media
(Previous Letter)
Dear dawsongfg again,
Co-Mod: I wasn’t trying to say that natural deaths can’t happen in the Ace Attorney universe, just that most deaths aren’t what they seem.  I knew right away that Archie Buff’s death was no accident, for one thing.  Waaaaay too much of a coincidence, know what I mean?

2020 Favorite Video Games
Tumblr media
I don’t know if I am an outlier or if this is the same for everyone else but I really did not play a lot of games this year. 2020 was a very harsh year for all of us, especially for me for some personal reasons. So to get to the chase, I am just gonna say it left me not doing much in what little free time I did have, and I didn’t play much either. Usually I try to keep my lists for ‘favorite of the year’ to only titles released that year but since I played so little this year, screw it. I am gonna include any game I played this year regardless of release date.
Collection of SaGa
Tumblr media
By far a flawed rerelease. It’s bare bones: there are no advance features you would usually expect out of these kinds of emulated rereleases like save states, fast forward, or rewind, and there was no real effort made to touch up almost 30 year old localizations that had to meet Nintendo of America’s then harsh standards. This really is just 3 roms slapped into a nice looking interface with an option to increase the game speed (which by the way you better use, the characters walk very slow in these old games).
I am bit harsh here, but only because I thought the Romancing SaGa remasters and the upcoming SaGa Frontier remaster all looked like they got a great budget and a lot of love while this is just another Collection of Mana situation (moreso specifically talking about Seiken Densetsu 1/Final Fantasy Adventure/Adventures of Mana part of that collection). I would have loved to see Square Enix do a bit more for these older games. Or at least include the remakes. Seiken Densetsu 1 had two great remakes, both unused in Collection of Mana, and all three of these original SaGa titles have remakes that have never seen the light of day outside of Japan. How great would it have been to get the Wonderswan remake of SaGa 1, as well as the Nintendo DS remakes of Saga 2 and SaGa 3?
But my gripes aside, these games are still fun as they ever were. Replaying SaGa 1 specifically during the holiday season really helped calm me down and made me feel at ease. It’s easy to forget but even in their Gameboy roots there are a lot of funky and weird experimental choices being made in these games. They aren’t your run-of-the-mil dragon quest (or considering the gameboy, maybe pokemon would be more apt) clones.
Raging Loop
Tumblr media
Perhaps my favorite game of the year, Raging Loop is one of the best visual novels I have ever played hands down. The level of creativity and splitting story paths that went into it is simply mind blowing. The basic premise is both a wonderful throwback to the old days of Chunsoft sound novels while still modern and somewhat reminiscent of both Higurashi and Danganronpa. Essentially you play as Haruaki, a poor slub that got lost in the mountains with no clue where to go until you stumble upon an old rural village with a strange history and even stranger superstitions. Before you know it there has been a murder and the Feast is now afoot.
The less said about Raging Loop the better, although I do want to say a lot about it one day if I ever can write a proper review of it. This is a gripping game that will take hold of you once you get into it though and never let go. I actually 100%-ed this and I very rarely do that. I got every ending, every bonus hidden ending, played the entire game twice to hear all the hidden details it purposely hides on your first play through, played all the bonus epilogue chapters, unlocked all the hidden voice actor interviews, collected all the art work, etc, etc. I was just obsessed with this game, it’s that damn good! And the main character is maybe the best troll in all of video games, god bless Haruaki.
Root Double
Tumblr media
From Takumi Nakazawa, long time contributor to Kotaro Uchikoshi’s work comes a game any fan of Zero Escape or Uchikoshi in general will probably enjoy. Root Double, like its name suggests is a visual novel with two different routes, hence Root Double. The first route stars Watase Kasasagi, the leader of an elite rescue team in the midst of their greatest crisis yet that could lead to nuclear devastation as they try to evacuate a nuclear research facility that has gone awry.
The other route stars Natsuhiko Tenkawa, an everyday high schooler whose peaceful life is thrown into turmoil when he stumbles upon a terrorist plot to destroy the nuclear facility in the city and his attempts to stop them. Together the two separate plots weave into one and creates a really crazy ride. Part Chernobyl, part science fiction, any fan of the genre will easily enjoy it. And hey it’s kind of relevant to include on this list too since it just got a Switch port this year (I played it on steam though).
Snack World
Tumblr media
I was shocked upon starting Snack World as it is instantly incredibly charming, witty, and downright hilarious at times yet I heard almost zero people talk about it. EVER. This game is Dragon Quest levels of quirky though, and the localization is incredible. The game has such an oddball sense of humor that works really well with its presentation right down to the anime opening video that sings about the most bizarre things. Instead of the usual pump up song about the cool adventure ahead we get stuff like wanting to go out to a restaurant and eat pork chops.
The self aware/fourth wall breaking humor is just enough to be really funny, but doesn't overstay its welcome and always makes it work right in the context of the dialogue. And finally, just everything; with the menus, the name of side quests and missions, and the character dialogue -- are all just so witty and full of quirky humor. This is one hell of a charming and funny game and addictive to boot.
Trials of Mana
Tumblr media
Trials of Mana has gone from one of those legendary unlocalized games, to one of the first major breakthroughs in fan translation, to finally getting an official English release complete with a fully 3D remake. In a lot of ways from a western perspective this game has had an incredible journey. As for this remake itself, I really found myself having tons of fun with it. I loved the graphics, and the voice acting while a bit on the cheaper side almost kind of adds to the charm since both the graphics and acting really give it an old PS2 vibe. I know that is probably just more me being weird but yeah, I had to say it.
I really hope Square Enix sticks to this style of remake more often, instead of just doing Final Fantasy VII Remakes that break the bank and involve extensive tweaking to both plot and game play. I’ll take smaller budget projects that play more like the original game any day personally. I wouldn’t mind if they also deliver a brand new Mana game all together in this engine either.
Utawarerumono Trilogy
Tumblr media
This year saw the release of the first entry in the series, Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen--and thus finally after three years since the sequels Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth came out in 2017 the trilogy is now complete in English. I ended up binging through Prelude to the Fallen very fast shortly after it came out and immediately jumped on to the sequels. Perhaps the best part of 2020 was that I finally played all three of these fantastic games, and did so back-to-back-to-back. Playing the first Utawarerumono was an experience I will never forget, it was like visiting old friends again that I haven’t seen in ages, by and large thanks to the fact that I saw the anime adaption of the game when I was much younger, nearly a decade ago. Back then I would have never of dreamed that I would get to play the actual game and get the real experience.
And it only got better from here, as all three games are such wonderful experiences from start to finish. The stories are all so deep, and by the time you get to the third entry, Mask of Truth, it’s crazy to see how they all connected over so many years and weaved together into a plot much bigger than they ever were. What carries it beyond all that though has to be the fun and addicting strategy role playing game aspect, which while a bit on the easy side, is still so much fun and helps make the game feel better paced since you get to play the conquests your characters go on and not just read about all the battles they fight. Beyond that the games are packed full of awesome characters, and I know I’ll never forget the amazing leads in all of them. Hakuowlo, Haku, and Oshtor will all go down as some of the greats to me.
Ys: Memories of Celceta
Tumblr media
Ys: Memories of Celceta is a full 3D remake of Ys IV, a rather infamous game in Falcom’s Ys series. Not to get bogged down too much into the history of Falcom but by this point they were facing a lot of hardship and had to outsource this entry to other developers, and thus passed it on to two particular developers they had a business relationship with, creating two unique versions of Ys IV. Tonkin House who had worked on Super Famicom port of Ys III with Falcom ended up creating their own YS IV entry, Mask of the Sun for the very same system, where Hudson soft who had produced the much beloved Ys Books I & II remakes for the Turbografix (PC Engine) CD add-on created their own Ys IV entry Dawn of Ys for that console. Both games followed guidelines and ideas outlined from Falcom themselves but both radically diverged from each other and turned into completely different games.
Falcom finally putting an end to this debate on which version of Ys IV you should play have gone and created their own definitive Ys IV in 2012 for the Playstation Vita. I played the 2020 remastered version of this remake on my PS4. I even bought this on the Vita when it first came out but I am horrible and only horde games, never play them. So it was a lot of fun to finally play this.
Memories of Celceta is probably one of the best starting points for anyone looking to get into Ys, especially if you only want to stay with the 3D titles as out of all the 3D entries this explains the most about the world and series protagonist Adol Christian. Beyond that it’s just another fantastic entry in a wonderful series that has a few good twists hidden behind it, especially for long time fans of the series.
Random Video Game Console Stuff
Tumblr media
Xbox Has Blue Dragon: I actually got an Xbox One this year for free from my brother. Because of that I started to play Blue Dragon again and there’s a lot I would love to say about this game. I don’t know if I am fully committed to replaying it all the way through however but I find myself putting in a couple hours every few days and enjoying myself again. Does anyone else remember Blue Dragon? I feel like it really missed its audience and had it come out nowadays and probably for the Switch it would have really resonated with the Dragon Quest fandom a lot more instead of being thrown out to die on Xbox and constantly compared to Final Fantasy VII and the like which it had nothing at all similar with.
The Turbografx 16 Mini: This was probably one of the best mini consoles that have come out and I feel like thanks to the whole 2020 pandemic thing it was largely forgotten about. That’s a shame, it has a wonderful variety of great games, especially if you count the Japanese ones (god I wish I could play the Japanese version of Snatcher included), and a wonderful interface with fantastic music. One of these days I would really like to be able to play around with the console more seriously than I have already.
Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon Never Existed: So Nintendo localized the first ever Fire Emblem game on Nintendo Switch which is awesome to see them touching Famicom games again--I haven’t seen Nintendo of America rerelease old Famicom titles since Mysterious Murasame Castle on the 3DS, but their trailer hilariously made it seem like this is the first time ever they released Fire Emblem when in fact they had already localized the remake Shadow Dragon on the Nintendo DS nearly 10 or 11 years ago. I and many other fans I talked to all found this really hilarious, probably solely because of how much they kept repeating the fact that this is the first time you will ever be able to experience Marth’s story.
Tumblr media
All that aside though I have to say the collector edition for this newly localized Famicom game is probably the most gorgeous retro reproduction I have seen in a long time, and I really spent many many hours just staring at the all clear glass mock cartridge. I have found myself really obsessing over retro reproductions during 2020, and obtained quite a few this year. I really hope this trend continues to go on in 2021 as recreating classic console packaging and cartridges is a lot of fun.

Title: Trials and Tributes (4/5)
Summary:
"There were witches who lived among them. Or so that's what Levi was told. He just could not believe for the life of him that she'd be one of them."
Levi is a soldier who interrogates witches before they are put on trial and Hange might just be a witch.

For the first time, Levi actually spat out tea Hange had served. “What the fuck is this?”
If it were any other tea, he probably would have regretted it. He didn’t even think the liquid she had served was tea though and he almost felt satisfied to have given it such a fitting end. Sure, it did have the flowery scent and maybe even a little fruit. It was just a little too strong though and a lot of the tastes just didn’t mix too well. Levi even questioned if it was even supposed to be drank
Hange gave him a wry smile. “Yeah, so you did notice… I was hoping if I washed the kettle enough the smell would disappear.”
Something dawned on Levi though. Knowing Hange, there was only one explanation for the odd taste of the kettle. “Why the hell are you using kitchenware for experiments?” Levi only felt a little guilty a second after when he saw Hange wince at that swear word.
"I needed a point of comparison,” Hange answered matter-of-factly.
A part of him was self aware that maybe he was a little too angry about the wasted tea. It was tea after all, a luxury and one of the few simple joys Levi looked forward to everyday and the taste of that one cup, had definitely ruined his mood for the next hour. “For what?” Levi managed to say, not allowing himself to say anymore, for fear of saying something he would regret.
“Well, it wasn’t for nothing for sure…” Hange started. Levi did not need to prompt her. If it really was interesting to her, she would ramble endlessly on it unprompted. And that was she did for the next few minutes. “So to cut a long story short. If it’s just boiling water, it starts bubbling within a few minutes. But some of the oils I was able to make from the herbs take hours to start bubbling and even days to evaporate."
“So what?”
“I think that’s an important piece of knowledge.” Hange defended.
“As long as you know all liquids boil eventually, I don’t think you need to. Give me one situation where you actually need to know what evaporates faster. Why would you need to know how long it will take?”
Hange paused for a second. “At least I’ll know how long I have to wait.”
                               Trials and Tributes
Levi finally got the two week-long vacation he deserved.
He probably could have gotten it anytime of the year, having been an exemplary soldier and the pride of the army. It just never seemed worth it when there were always witches to interrogate and trials to watch.
For the first time since he joined the army though, Levi saw worth in it. He saw it in the long trek to his hometown and the long trek back. He saw it in the week-long stretch before Hange was to be executed in a trial by fire. If the officials and the clergymen had thought about it, they may have realized how odd it would be for the officer in charge of the trials of Hange Zoe to take a week off in the days counting down until her execution.
They were a little too trusting. That was a card Levi had on his side and he was determined not to waste it.
As he made his way through the familiar rolling hills, which he was certain was less than a day’s ride to the cabin he had lived in long ago, he allowed himself a few minutes to reflect on that special card on his side. It was Hange’s sharpness and quickwittedness which had made it so easy for him to deal that card in the first place.
Back in the cave, Levi had been too distracted and maybe a little too emotional to have noticed that he was being followed.
Don’t touch me! Hange’s out-of-character snarl and the way she had recoiled from his touch had made it easier for the guard to interpret the situation as something different.
Levi wasn’t a traitor conniving with a suspected witch. To the guard and to the many people who had heard of his deeds soon after, Levi was a soldier sharp enough to have known that there was a cave connected to the sea and to have hypothesized that just maybe, Hange had escaped there.
That great escape only further confirmed their suspicions. Hange definitely was a witch. And she was due to be burned at stake soon.
Soon. That was where the urgency came. The urgency that had Levi galloping through the rolling hills, risking a painful fall or even death to get what he needed from that cabin in the woods.
That trek should have taken three days but having given up food, water, safety, and the comfort of a relaxing ride, Levi made it there in a day.
                                         Trials and Tributes
It could have been the particular tea mix of that day, the beautiful clear weather or the lack of aches in his joints. Regardless, it manifested in that particularly good mood Levi was in that day. “I think your herb mixing skills are actually improving,” he said. Surprisingly, he was the one breaking one of their bouts of silence in between conversations that day.
Hange blushed. “What? You think so?”
“Well, remember that poultice you gave me. The green oil one for body aches.”
“There are different types of green oils”
“The one you gave me last night.”
“I gave you a lot.” Hange cocked her head to the side, looking deep in thought. “Try to describe the smell.”
“The smell? How am I gonna describe a scent?” He knew Hange would have been better at describing them since she knew the names of all the herbs in the garden. Levi on the other hand, only had the names of the primary and secondary colors and the basic shapes to describe things with. He had a sharp sense of smell and could recall most scents by memory. Articulating and describing them were a completely different story.
Hange wagged her finger at him. “Don’t underestimate your sense of smell,” she sang playfully. “To be honest, I think picking something by scent might even be more accurate if you try to articulate yourself. I have probably ten green potions lying around there.”
“I can describe it by shade.”
“There are only so many shades the average person could pick out and a much lower number of shades of what would be natural for potions.”
“Then why don’t you just take them out and I’ll tell you which one it is?”
“No. I wanna play a game. Describe the smell.”
“Fine. It’s like a mix between a fruit and an herb. When I smelled it, it felt...cold.” Levi had kept his explanation simple hoping finally she would give up and just line up the green medicines on the table for him to pick up.
Hange paused for a second and stared at nothing, looking to be deep in thought. She snapped her fingers. “Oh, that one. She opened her cupboard and from his angle Levi could see that she had reached for the top shelf and took a quick look at something inside.” She turned to him and smiled.“I think I know what you’re talking about. It’s still a work in progress so thanks for the feedback.. At least I know it’s actually working well.” She settled on the chair in front of him.
And she was still smiling. Her cheeks were still a bright shade of pink. A happy shade of pink.
“Why are you still smiling?”
“You know, I think this is the first time you’ve ever complimented me.”
                                       Trials and Tributes
On the top shelf. That was all Hange had told him.
As he neared the cabin, he was reminded that he still had his doubts about how good the instructions were. When he entered the musty cabin though, he started to understand why she was not too nervous at having kept her instructions so simple.
She had said it in a rush before they brought her in for more interrogation. He had no time for anything else, having spent most of the time in the black market, coordinating with transporters to find Hange a safe way out of the city.
The cabin was musty. The windows probably hadn’t been opened since Hange was arrested and the smell of herbs that wafted through the air, although they remained, reminded Levi of stale bread.
The smell wasn’t something he wanted to give a passing thought to. He opened the windows as soon as he arrived and forced himself to forget the mustiness by focusing elsewhere.
It was easy to distract himself. All he needed to do was take in the sight of the room and indulge that feeling of nostalgia that followed. The room was organized the same way as he had last left it, save for an extra bed on the side, possibly for patients and Levi only needed two pieces of information to figure out the meaning of Hange’s instructions.
It’s a piece of medicine. It’s on the top shelf. The cupboards were lined up in a way that the lower shelves were decorated with different bottles while the upper shelves were decorated with pieces of cloth, some equipment. It was Levi who had suggested she decorate it that way years ago, so it would not be too hard to remove bottles if she needed to dig for something towards the back.
It’s on the top shelf. Although he did know his way around the cabin, he did not know his way around the top shelf. Having never been tall enough to see its contents without the help of a platform or stool. A disadvantage he had never wanted to acknowledge.
For the first time though, Levi had to acknowledge his below average height to get things done. He placed a stool in front of the cupboard and stood on it. The shelf extended all the way to both sides of the square cabin. The platform though gave him enough view of both ends. Just like he had remembered from the occasional peek at Hange opening keyboards, he did see the equipment from mortars and pestles to iron rods to iron clamps and glassware. For a second, he wondered how he would be able to find the bottle of oil she was talking about.
He had made the better decision though of opening all the cupboards and checking the top shelves. The top shelf of one of the last cupboards he checked was empty save for one bottle towards the back of the shelf. He probably wouldn’t even have noticed it if he did not feel for any contents towards the back of the cupboards.
There was no label. It was the only one there. Hange though was the bare minimum of organized and Levi was sure it was just like Hange to not put a label though if it were the only bottle in an empty top shelf.
There was a small note on parchment paper under the bottle. Levi pulled it out along with the bottle. He jumped off the stool and placed the bottle on the table near the cupboard where they used to share stories over tea so many years ago.
For some reason, touching the table was enough for that wave of nostalgia to morph into something else, possibly sadness or loneliness, a reminder that the happy conversations over tea he had enjoyed years ago were long gone. It was enough for him to need to sit down and just breathe before doing anything else. As he relished the short reprieve he had allowed himself, he examined the unlabeled bottle. It had gathered dust, just like the wooden table, the bed on the corner and the small makeshift kitchen and workshop.
Levi felt a sense of duty to at least clean what he could and found himself wiping the dustiest thing close to him --- the glass bottle with the oil. The contents only became more recognizable as he cleared the dust. It was a yellow transparent and viscous liquid, typical and expected of an ointment or oil.
Hange had told him long ago, the scent could tell a person what something is more than its appearance.
There are only so many shades the average person could pick out and a much lower number of shades of what would be natural for potions.
Don’t underestimate your sense of smell.
Sitting on the table where she had said it long ago, he recalled those words so clearly it was as if he could hear it again. And maybe she was right.
The scent wafted out of the bottle as soon as Levi opened it.
As fruity and as flowery as he always expected it to be. As he put it closer to his nose, he felt the unnatural chill that rushed through his nostrils and quickly chilled his whole body. It was a warm day in spring but Levi found himself shivering for a moment.
He opened the note he had left on the table. It wasn’t a label but by then, he was certain he didn’t need one. The scent had told him enough.
For Levi, when he comes home. That was all the note said.
                                  Trials and Tributes
Although Levi had been able to sneak her the oil she had needed, Levi wasn’t there to escort her to the pyre.
A two week leave. Or so that was what he had applied for.
Many of the people around had clocked it to a much needed break since he had exhausted all his mental power, trying to stay one step ahead of the cunning and wit of Hange Zoe. It was only expected that Levi took that two week leave to go back to his hometown. Too many have seen him exit the main gate of the walled capital. Levi though was only there for three days tops. He had reentered the city again through subtler means.
A few days before the execution, Levi was once again within the city walls, navigating the dark alleys, the slums and the underground market that snaked through them, learning of the slave trade, the human trafficking trade and the logistics of transporting fugitives out of the capitol and ideally the country.
Hange was no slave though. On top of making sure she did have a sure way out of the country, he wanted to make sure she got out in one piece.
The logistics of sneaking someone safely out of the city was complex and painstaking. He was finding a way to break a high profile prisoner out of her cell. He might only have one chance at it and he needed to make sure the trip out of the city was as smooth as possible. Hange was not someone he would have been comfortable leaving with the run of the mill trafficker or drug lord.
He needed more time.
They just needed to buy time. It was Erwin who had made the plan, that risky plan that took advantage of both the eagerness of the higher ups to execute her in some grand festivity and the boiling point of one of the concoctions Hange herself had been so familiar with. It was Hange who considered how it should be executed.
The area where she was to be burned was already burning. The mixture of wood and hay had been laid in and spread around the lot save for a path to the center where Hange was to stand while the flames consume her.
A beautiful spectacle approved by those with power who valued aesthetic over practicality. In fact, so beautiful of a spectacle and so politically motivated that there were notably many more platforms and seats reserved for noblemen, plutocrats and religious authorities.
And that’s what we’re going to give them now. Levi had blended into the crowd that gathered on the main square. He kept himself invisible a few rows back but still near enough to the center to witness the execution.
A bishop stepped up on the platform at the center, recounting her crimes while the people quietly listened, save for a few murmurs among the crowd.
“Witch, you have been tried and convicted under the benevolent will of God. You are a consort of Satan and shall burn at the stake. Repent now and God may have mercy on your soul. Fail to repent and you shall writhe on that stake just as you shall writhe for eternity in the pits of Hell!” The bishop waved a cross in front of Hange but the latter didn't even flinch.
Hange was silent, unmoving only looking forward at nothing. She did not cry desperately or squirm under ropes. She did not curse the gods or attempt to resist the arm the cuffs that held her close to a guard. That was one reason why Erwin and Levi were so easily able to convince the higher ups to allow her a more unconventional burning at stake.
The other more blatant reason was the fact that she had escaped the swimming test a little too well. Everyone who had witnessed it were more than convinced she was a witch. And if they cemented it then. Maybe, just maybe Levi could keep the people’s guards up, keep them planning a magic proof way to execute her and push back another execution a few weeks back while he finds a way to get her out of the city
That witch is dangerous. I have witnessed her magic. You cannot bound her. A piece of bullshit which Levi had proposed to the clergymen when they had asked his opinion on her execution.
What if she refuses to walk into the flames?
Then we push her in. Levi was sure though that she would walk in. He had prepared the coal himself the night before. The coal at that moment glowed a light orange on the ground illuminating her path to the center of the pyre.
Levi could not tell from where he was standing the exact moment Hange had started walking towards the center. He could hear from the gasps though and the screams of ‘witch’ that people were seeing something arcane.
Levi violently pushed his way through the front of the crowd. Before he had even noticed it, he had stopped in front when he finally got a good look at Hange from head to toe. She calmly walked towards the center of the pyre barefoot, barefoot on the path that glowed with flames and embers.
It wasn’t over yet.
Hange turned towards the audience and for a second she had made eye contact with Levi. Her face stayed serious though, her expression unperturbed by the flames around her. She put a hand into the flame that was almost burning high enough to be the same height as an adult human. This gesture elicited more gasps from the audience.
Levi found himself unable to look away. Hange brought her hand out quickly from the flame and with it, she had a part of the flame burning in her hand.
For a few seconds she held the flame in front of a crowd, her expression unchanging. The flame danced on her palm, like a cursed pet, a spawn of the devil. With it, Levi was starting to smell it again, the faint yet distinct mix of fruits and flowers that had kept him company his years in the battlefield, that kept him looking back at Hange Zoe. The scent kept him staring and only complemented the eerie smile on Hange’s face that crept up her lips.
Maybe I am bewitched. Levi’s blood ran cold and he had to admit that at that exact moment, Hange might have actually been a witch.
That scene only lasted a few seconds before Hange shook her hand and the flame died out. The scene was still long enough though to completely engrave itself into the heads of all those who watched.
Fire cannot touch the witch. We need to consider other execution methods. Those were supposed to be Erwin’s lines. The lines that would convince the executioner to douse the flames and pull Hange out.
What none of them had failed to consider though was the extreme mass hysteria that could have been caused by such a simple magic trick.
The crowds exploded into screams of terror. Others were running away from the pyre while others were cheering at the executioner to find a way to kill her faster.
Hange too had dropped her facade of complete calm. She was starting to walk away from the flames and out into the safe open space where the crowds were starting to disperse.
Everything was happening all at once. For a moment, all he could see were the people rushing through and the crowds. All he could hear were the screams of the people, accusations of witch. And somewhere in the air, he smelled it, the faint yet distinct mixture of fruits and flowers was there but something else was joining the scent. Another smell Levi knew too well. Something was burning and Levi had to act fast.
Levi pushed at the crowd and up to the front to see the executioner pushing Hange back into the ember trodden path. He saw the barrel of gunpowder and the three guards that were hauling towards the pyre and Hange who was painfully trying to keep her balance on the fiery path beneath her.
Levi only had a second to act. At that moment, something possessed him.
                                        Trials and Tributes
“Then go for the neck. Like this!”
For the fifth time that day, Levi found himself on the ground while his uncle’s saxe knife was pressed to his throat, almost close enough to draw blood. “But they might die.” Levi managed to say.
Kenny sighed. “Kid, you’re gonna have to kill one day.”
“But I’d rather not. Mom wouldn’t have wanted it.” Levi carefully pushed himself back up to a standing position, keeping his eyes trained on his uncle who would sometimes pounce in surprise when the young boy’s guard was low.
Kenny twirled the knife on his head and looked. “Kuchel is dead and you have to learn to fend for yourself.”
“There must be a way to fight without killing.”
“There is. You can knock out a man by hitting that same artery. Like this.” Kenny tapped at the place where he had pressed his knife only a second ago. “But I’m not gonna spend my time teaching you how to be a softie. I’d rather you kill when you need to. If you hesitate, you might end up just like your mother.”
The scar of having lost his mother only that year hadn’t completed healed just yet. Levi found himself biting back tears at the fate that awaited him, an isolated life in a cabin and brutal training with his uncle, learning how to kill.
Or as his uncle had defined it. Self defense. Somehow Levi wasn’t convinced.
Kenny sighed. “Levi, what would you do if you ran into the witch that started the plague? Knock them out and run away?”
                                        Trials and Tributes
“This is as far as I go. Just go straight there and pass the mountain and you’re out of our territory.”
That was the first thing Erwin said since they had started their long trek down south. They had been riding for more than a day and at that rate, they were both confident that no one would be near enough to hear any of their conversations. Even if they did, Levi would be long gone past the mountain by then and Erwin could easily feign having gotten lost on the way to some village.
“You’ll take care of her right?” Levi asked. She was the first thing that came to mind when Levi found himself brought back to reality by Erwin’s voice. He noticed soon after though that she had never left his mind.
“Leave her to me. I’ll take care of her.” Erwin assured. “You’ve done more than enough already.”
“I wish I could have taken her with me.”
“With her injuries, she might not even make the journey,” Erwin said.
Back at the cave where Levi hid after the incident at the capital, Erwin had recounted her injuries, minor burns to her feet, a few deeper burns on her hands and a major burn on her lower back having been pushed back by the executioner into the ember trodden pyre. Somewhere along the way, she had also passed out from suffocation.
The last time Levi had seen her she was face down on the ground next to the pyre right after Levi had jumped in to pull her out.
The executioner and the guards were quick to attack, ready to kill the intruder. With the amount of power concentrated in the square that day, there were more guards to subdue than usual. Then, it reminded Levi of the war he fought years ago. It could have been worse though, back in the war, he at least had allies. Back in the square as he jumped in to pull Hange out, he was faced with the prospect of dozens, maybe fifty or even a hundred soldiers, all focused on taking him out.
Levi though was still much quicker, so quick that he had found it difficult to even control himself. He had gone into survival mode with his only weapon then, his saxe knife.
It was Erwin who had pulled him out of trance then. That awakening came as a tap on the shoulder and an urgent order to take advantage of the chaos and run away. Levi was still in his civilian wear and in the plain cloak which made it easy enough for him to pull it over his head and blend in with the panicked crowd.
By then though the damage had been done. Through fighting instinct alone, Levi had snuffed out any attempt to harm the unconscious woman next to the pyre which had resulted in the death of most if not all the soldiers, a few clergymen and a few nobles
Levi could not bring himself to murder anyone in the crowd though and consequently, they were left with witnesses.
When they had met clandestinely in the cave a few days after the incident, Erwin recounted both the testimonies and his own experience. They described his movements as too quick to have been both natural or mortal.
By some miracle of crowd mentality and mental conditioning, the fifty or even a hundred witnesses in the crowd had concluded for themselves that it was Levi who was practicing witchcraft. With some clever manipulation of his own testimony on the chaos of that day, Erwin had managed to paint Hange as a victim manipulated by witchcraft. She was unconscious throughout the whole fiasco after all.
All efforts were then turned towards finding the rogue soldier Levi who had manipulated the events which ended with a poor innocent woman being burned at stake. Suddenly, he was a wanted man for possible heresy, treason and witchcraft and was sure to receive the capital punishment.
If they caught him. Levi found himself with no choice but to leave.
“Erwin, do you think I practice witchcraft?” Levi asked as he turned his horse towards the direction of the mountain path.
“I told you before. I don’t believe in magic.”
“How can people so easily conclude for themselves then that what happened in the square was magic?” Levi asked. He had worked with Erwin enough to know that the blonde did have a way with words, enough to have manipulated others before.
Erwin always needed some basis for manipulation. How could he have convinced a crowd to believe that it was witchcraft? Levi had enough time on his own to have reflected on it already. The crowd then was terrified and confused. He had probably murdered a number of people after all.
But to conclude it to be witchcraft? To make it possible for Erwin to convince many others that he had been behind it all along? “I murdered them. I can say that much. But to accuse me of witchcraft is unsettling.”
“People only believe what they can see. From where I stood, I had a good view of you Levi, or at least as good of a view as you allowed me. You were fast, too fast that even I questioned whether or not you were a trick of the light.” Erwin started. “I’ve seen many things but that was my first time seeing something like that and I was sure it was the first time seeing something like that for most of the audience. People won’t accurately remember a scene they can barely comprehend. In fact, you can even prey on those uncertainties and create a story of your own. Many saw you kill but not many saw you defending Hange. It was easy to make her just as much of a victim as everyone else, especially with her injuries. Crowd thinking is a curious thing.”
“But you don’t believe that something like that could be magic?” Levi asked.
“I think the idea of magic and witchcraft is just an excuse for those too lazy to dig deeper. Most priests just attribute unfortunate events to the work of the devil or to a poor victim which they will just hang then. They then forget about this and drink their merry way until the next plague or drought comes then they find another scapegoat. And the cycle just continues….I don’t believe though that any of these phenomena can be so easily attributed to one person or to the work of the devil. There must be a logical explanation behind everything. What if those bouts of ‘magic’ are just part of how the natural world works? And we just need to dig deeper into these phenomena to find out why they happen?”
Levi only continued to listen.
And Hange…” Erwin let out a breath and looked up at the sky above him. “Her research and analysis skills are commendable. She had theories about invisible particles in the air, about the special properties of certain chemicals. She exhibited an impressive amount of knowledge about how the world works and had the deduction skills to compliment. Maybe that’s why she was such a skilled apothecarist. She’s ahead of our time and that’s what made her such an easy victim?”
Ahead of our time? “An easy victim?.”
“We live in a society which rejects what is deemed unconventional or unfamiliar. The village people who turned on Hange for example, instead of asking Hange themselves why she was able to do what she did. They accused her of witchcraft, just like they did to the victims before her. It should have been expected though. Many people naturally fear what they cannot comprehend especially when we have religious leaders boring into our heads that anything unexplained is the work of the devil.”
“Do you believe Hange’s actions are comprehensible?”
“I asked Hange myself. She explained everything. If I needed to, I’m sure I could have reproduced a lot of what she did if she guided me through the processes..” Erwin lowered his gaze towards the ground. “I can’t help but think, maybe if we lived in a more open society, this type of discourse and research might actually be helpful. If more people were informed and could easily discuss this among themselves, we could probably find ways to avoid plagues before they happen, cure more illnesses and improve the lives for many people through discoveries and inventions.”
Hange is ahead of our time. An extraordinary person, born into a society that rejects the extraordinary. Maybe the same could be said for you too.
Levi found himself taking up a lot of energy just resisting the temptation to turn back the way he had came. Even as the clip-clop of horse hooves only got softer as Erwin disappeared into the night, Levi found himself considering the risk of getting lost or worse arrested if he decided to turn back and follow Erwin.
In the capital though, the only thing that awaited him was death. At least his survival instincts were enough to recognize that much. That was enough to spur Levi on.
The next morning, when the remaining nobles reconvened their meeting on the mysterious murder of the clergymen, the nobles and the guards at the town square, their main suspect was long gone.
Levi had already disappeared into the mountains and into the night.

Gladiator: 200th Chapter Celebration
Tagging: @kigozula @seyaryminamoto
---
Seyary, this is a great milestone for you. Just want to let you know that I’m happy for you and impressed by the work that you have done over the long years of writing this story. You’ve inspired others to get into Sokkla as well as to have fun with the ship. Its been a great pleasure!
When I first picked up this story, I was still in college and rediscovering ATLA. Gladiator, as well as your other stories (which I recommend that others read as well) really cemented my liking for this ship. Years later, I’m still here, though all the ups and downs.
Now, despite me liking Gladiator a whole lot, I’ve admittedly fallen behind on catching up with it, chapter by chapter. That said, I do want to read it at my own pace and as I read more I still find myself loving the story, as there is much to enjoy.
So, to that end, I’ll be commenting on the parts of the story I have been caught up with, Chapters 1 to 100. I hope that’s okay.
---
1.) Favorite Character: Sokka
Now, this doesn’t mean I don’t like Azula. Of course not. And choosing one over the other is such a hard call to make that I would rather have them both occupy the same spot. But I decided Sokka in this case for a number of reasons. Others have commented on Azula in their own posts, so I thought giving my reasons for Sokka seemed only fair.
We’ve seen Sokka change a lot over the course of the story and I seeing him morph into the character he is now is such a stark contrast to the one we saw at the very beginning. He hated the Fire Nation and was unwilling to cooperate with Azula. And yet, after trial and error and harsh circumstance, we have seen become a great warrior in his own right and the closest companion Azula has ever had, being her secret lover. It has been such a treat seeing him change and adapt and grow in this story. And as someone who really does like him as much as Azula, it was (and still is) a thill to see him get an all-star treatment in a story.
And yet there are lingering complexities within him in this story, as far as I have gotten in it. There is still that awareness within him of who he serves and what he is doing, along with a nagging feeling of inadequacy that has hounded him at every turn. Bit by bit, either by his own efforts or with a little help, he is clawing his way forward internally to find some reconciliation. And I find that very compelling.
And also its fun to see him thrash gladiators.
2.) Least Favorite Most Dreaded Character: Ozai
Well, that’s not true really. I don’t dislike any of the reoccurring characters actually.
The best way to describe this particular choice is “Most Dreaded Character”. I chose Ozai for this one because I dread the moment in when he finds out Azula and Sokka’s little affair. Now, again, I’m only on Chapter 100, so things could have changed by now. Yet, I believe still that if Ozai finds about about all this... a lot is going to change for Azula, Sokka, and even the Fire Nation. He will be a consequential character in the chapters to come and dread to see the his wrath and what that will mean for everyone else. It will not be pretty.
3.) Favorite “Antagonist”: Toph
When I first picked up this story and saw Toph introduced as an adversary, I was hyped. Like, you have no idea how hyped and pumped up I was for them to brawl. And I was not disappointed.
See, for me, Toph represented more than just a metaphorical torn in both Sokka’s and Azula’s side for a good chunk of this story. She is at times a very compelling mini-villain, as if she is straight out of a Disney movie. She loves what she does and enjoys it, and knows just how powerful she is. And flaunts it in spectacular display. She has such a simple yet understandable motivation and was a very real threat to Sokka’s own life in the very first fight they were in. And despite both Sokka and Toph eventually learning to respect and even befriend each other, there was always the nagging thought that they would eventually fight again, and each one knew they wanted to win that rematch. Toph provided Sokka and Azula a reoccurring adversary to strive toward beating. Even as other gladiators came and went, they always knew Toph would be their biggest obstacle. So much build up was focused on training for that eventuality. And all of it was compelling enough to paint Toph as this great rival to them. Her being a part-time ally in some cases and even being a friend didn’t really change that until after they had fought a second time.
Its because of this that I now believe firmly that Toph should be used as an antagonist more, if a story needs one. She is just so fun and so good as villain that hope others come to use her as one in AUs.
As I read more, I’m sure this might change in time. But, even with all the fights Sokka has had, I firmly maintain that Toph was his greatest adversary on many levels.
4.) Favorite OC: Rui Shi
Honestly, I think this guy is a sprit animal to someone out there. He’s just a guard trying to do his job right and the person he protects consistently makes that job harder for him in the most ridiculous ways. “Oh great, my princess is in an affair with her Gladiator and that won’t stop fucking like rabbits. Joy.”
Honestly, this man needs a vacation. A long one. And Seyary hasn’t given it to him, because she likes to make his life hard. Rude.
For the longest time, I actually thought Rui Shi was much older than he actually is in the story. So until a picture of him was finally made, I pictured him as a 40 year old veteran with a graying mustache and beard. Even with how he actually looks, I wouldn’t be surprised if his job made him grow gray hair from all the stress.
Good OC, one of a few I like.
5.) Favorite Suitor: Zhao
Should probably be no surprise. Where I am at right now, he’s essentially the suitor to beat as well as having the ultimate Gladiator for Sokka and Azula to defeat. Azula even admired him at some point. Though that has changed, I feel that Zhao has his eyes set on courting Azula further. Its a move that Ozai would likely not object to, provided Zhao pulls off something grand to earn that honor. And although every suitor has made Sokka angry, I feel Zhao would anger him on a deeper level as his interest in Azula grows.
I look forward to seeing him more.
6.) Favorite Gladiator(s): Jet and Suki (For Chapters 1-100)
Jet being a brainwashed Gladiator highlighted a dark aspect to the games. He was also a brutal berserker when in the ring and one of Sokka’s most bitter adversaries. Suki to me was an interesting contrast to Sokka his situation with Azula. She was to me a kind of noble gladiator, an Amazon in the ring put gentle when out of it. Putting the canon characters in as Gladiators was always a treat for me and actually lends itself to some world-building.
7.) Favorite Gladiator-Canon Pairing: Sokka/Azula
This should not be a surprise :P
I could go on and on about it, but for the sake of brevity, I’ll keep things short. This should not be surprise because the driving force and the very soul of this entire story is about a warrior-princess falling in love with a tribal gladiator. Their differences and how they reconcile them, their fears and pain, their passion and drive, all propel this story forward. Things have changed in this story because of them and they themselves have changed because fate brought them together.
If that isn’t enough to make them my favorite, then I’m sorry I don’t know what else to say to convince you XD
8.) Favorite Arc(s): Rough Rhinos Arcs
Two arcs hit me hard on an emotional level - The end of the introductory arc and the Rough Rhino’s arc. They literally crawl out of quagmire, find a dragon in the process, and have one of the most touching and sincere heart-to-hearts in the story thus far. It was one of my favorite arcs to read and the emotional stakes were high. As I read more and continue, this might change, but for now I maintain this is one of my favorite arcs.
9.) Favorite Places/Locations: To Be Determine
This is the down side of having to catch up. There are a lot of locations in the story and in the ATLA universe that I like, and its always a hard choice for me to decide. I am a big fan of settings for a story and when I find a setting I like I usually latch onto it in all its locations. So for now, I will not decide on a solid choice.
... however, in any AU it might show up in, Bs Sing Se is my first choice by biased default. I just love that city and I always appreciate when a story fleshes it out in little ways. Gladiator being set for a fraction of its time in the city was great for me as I got to read more about the city I like so much.
10.) I wish to see Sokkla in...: More tender, couple-like moments
Surprising, I know. But I what I mean is this - moments where they refrain from arguing, don’t bicker, and just enjoy being around each other, doing small things together. And its hard for them, they have to train they, have to keep their relationship a secret, they can only be a true couple for fleeting moments because of how dangerous and vulnerable it will leave them. And it claws at my heart every time. So I cherish the moments they have when they can be themselves around one another, fleeting as they sometimes are.
11.) I believe Sokka and Azula’s relationship will be revealed when/like/because of...:
... when they get careless. When they feel that they are safe in their secrecy, complacaent in their routines for keeping their relationship hidden, that’s when it will be revealed. Its a kind of Hubris of sorts.
And when its revealed, it will lead to something bad and irreversible for the both of them. You can only hide something like this for so long. Even historical royal affairs were never as secret as theirs. And they have taken painful precautions to keep it all under wraps.
So when it finally does, it will change everything. And that’s going to be quite the wild ride.
12.) I believe at the end of Part 3...:
... that a sacrifice will be made. A death or a relinquishment of something. Sokka and Azula will be together, but something will have to be given up, and it will test them for the final time.
I can’t say what it will be, but I’m going to enjoy finding out.

My Thoughts on Jedi Fallen Order
So after upgrading to a new, stronger laptop (pretty sure my stupidity in attempting to run this game on my old laptop hastened its tragic, untimely demise), I finally finished Jedi Fallen Order last night. I had mixed feelings going into this game, as I have some friends who said it was amazing while others said it was a mediocre story with decent gameplay.
Now after playing, was it the greatest Star Wars game I’ve ever experienced? No, but it was very good. Some minor gripes here and there, but overall I had a blast playing the game.
Warning: Some spoilers will be included, I’ll try to keep them as minor as possible though.
Story:
So I’m not gonna go overly deep into the story as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who still hasn’t played the game, but to be honest I found the plot of Fallen Order to be a bit generic at first. It’s a classic light side vs dark side narrative with a redemption arc or two sprinkled in. In fact, I found the plot of Fallen Order to be quite similar in structure to the Disney Trilogy. Both have MacGuffin hunts (holocron and wayfinder), both include journeys to different planets following the trail of someone else (Eno Cordova and that one assassin dude mentioned in IX), both have mentors who have distanced themselves from the Force (Cere and Luke), and both have antagonists who were failed by their masters (Trilla and Kylo).
Fallen Order splits off from this more generic route after returning to Dathomir and does it’s own thing, but I found myself asking why I enjoyed the first 75% or so of Fallen Order when I absolutely hated the DT. I found the answer to lie mainly in two things: the characters and the world they found themselves in.
Characters:
Cal Kestis: I absolutely loved Cal’s character arc. He has his own deep personal struggles with his past, feeling responsible for the death of his master. He faces those fears and comes to terms with his past, determined to make a better future. Cal not only comes out of his journey a Jedi Knight, but as a stronger person. Compare this to Rey, who had no meaningful flaws or personal struggles. Plus Cal’s the first ginger Jedi! Score one for diversity!
BD-1: My fourth favorite Star Wars droid, only behind HK-47, KOTOR 2′s T3-M4, and K-2SO. He’s cute, adorable, and loyal to a fault. What more could you ask for in a droid? (Other than a tibanna-powered blaster rifle and a bloodthirsty, anti-meatbag personality of course!) Plus there’s a revelation about his history towards the end that only makes him better and better.
Cere Junda: Star Wars has always had its mentor characters, but in all honesty I found Cere to be pretty generic. A Jedi Master who failed her Padawan and touched the dark side, only to be horrified by it and renounce the Force. Throughout learning her story, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had already seen something like this before. Her arc isn’t bad, it’s well done and feels natural to her character, it was just rather generic.
Greez Dritus: Gotta say Greez grew on me as the game went on. He has his flaw in his gambling problem which bites Cal in the ass a couple times, but towards the end I really felt the connection between him and the others grow. He’s also the source of a good deal of humor.
Nightsister Merrin: Sadly, Merrin being an eventual ally was spoiled for me, but I love the subversion because it was built up that she would be an eventual boss fight. Merrin might be my favorite character besides Cal, I wish there were more interactions with her in game! She’s hot, has a great accent, a wicked sense of humor, and is powerful with Nightsister magick. But beyond all that, she’s a parallel to Cal. Both are survivors, the last of their kind, and I’m hoping that if a sequel is made, it goes deeper into their relationship because Merrin and Cal have great chemistry. I also love how Merrin challenges Cal and Cere’s plan to train the next gen of Jedi using the holocron, putting that idea in a more realistic, less idealistic light.
Prauf: I really feel bad for him. I liked him and you could feel the camaraderie between him and Cal, how he wanted Cal to succeed and do great things. He didn’t deserve what happened to him.
Oggdo Bogdo: Fuck this frog! He killed me so many times!
Trilla Suduri (Second Sister): The Jedi Padawan that felt betrayed by her master and became an inquisitor. I always love it when antagonists have a personal connection to the protagonists in some way, shape, or form. Trilla shakes Cal’s faith in Cere, and plants seeds of doubt in him. She wants revenge and the Emperor’s favor, and therefore we know why she chases Cal across the galaxy. She has motivations for all her actions, which is something that Kylo lacked in the DT.
Taron Malicos: I knew something was off about this guy the second I met him. I quite enjoyed the clash of beliefs between him, Merrin, and Cal. Malicos proposes a way forward, a new Jedi Order, but one founded on darker teachings. He offers Cal that power, but Cal proves his stature as a Jedi in refusing it.
Ninth Sister (Masana Tide): Probably the weakest of the villain characters for me. Ninth barely has any presence in the game at all other than the start and to serve as a boss battle on Kashyyyk. I honestly just don’t think she fits into the story as is. Perhaps if they tweaked it so that Ninth and Cal knew each other back before Order 66 she would have fit better. Ninth just doesn’t have any personal connection to Cal and the Mantis crew (like Trilla does) and doesn’t really serve as a trial like Malicos does. Remove her from the story and not much changes.
(If you somehow haven’t had this next one spoiled yet, I’m impressed. Please skip to ‘World’ if so)
Darth Vader: I absolutely loved how he was portrayed. A terrifying, unstoppable force. You won’t last in a fight with him, your can only hope you can outrun him.
World:
Fallen Order’s worldbuilding was on point. Cal’s ability to sense Force Echoes lets you get a more detailed understanding of the environment around you. It’s a small-scale Star Wars story, but the planets all feel lived in if you take the time to explore them. It’s the small details like the probe droid witnessing your initial use of the Force on Bracca or the side-stories you can discover like the tragic tale of the family running from the Empire on Zeffo or Malicos’ corruption and manipulation of Merrin that really flesh out the world. Compare this to the galactic-scale story the DT told, which somehow made the galaxy feel extremely small and uninteresting.
My only complaint with the world-building is the Zeffo. They’re just... there. Very little is explained about them. Who were they? Why were they important? What happened to them? Why did they disappear? Perhaps this was to leave room for a sequel but to me the Zeffo just felt like discount Rakata. I wish the devs had gone with the Rakata instead, but maybe that’s just me.
Also the wildlife on every world is more than capable of killing you if you aren’t careful so you almost always have to be on your toes for them, which rolls us into the next part...
Gameplay:
The gameplay was great fun in Fallen Order. Leveling up and unlocking new abilities was exciting and once I got the hang of them all, it was so much fun just cutting through your enemies. I played on Jedi Master difficulty (died approximately 75 times, give or take a few I may have missed) and it felt really well balanced. It forced me to study my opponent’s moves and adapt to them instead of being a hack-and-slash type of game. Combos are fluid and fun to pull off, parrying opponents leaves an opening to attack, and you can experiment with different fighting styles.
Customizing your lightsaber and appearance was also great fun. So many different options and combinations for everything! Plus you got rewarded for exploration with these extra customization options, so it adds incentive to do that if you care about appearances and whatnot. You can become the General Grievous of ponchos!
Overall Rating: 8.5/10
Overall Fallen Order was a great game that could have been even better. Of course I have to admit I’m looking at this through the nostalgia of games like KOTOR 2, which flipped Star Wars completely on its head. I would have preferred if Cere’s story had been a bit more nuanced, the Ninth Sister had more reason for being in the story, or if the game had Cal seriously question the use and role of Jedi in the galaxy (he does a couple times to BD-1, but it’s never really built on).
And then there’s my overall gripe about this type of story set after Order 66. It sets up questions like... where was Cal during the OT? Was he dead? Somewhere in the Unknown Regions doing something else? I know the ending of the game sets up the opening for Cal’s story to continue, but still, these types of stories usually end in death for the Jedi protagonist, so I am a bit nervous for his future.
Despite that though, I am super happy I finally decided to play this and am eagerly awaiting a sequel to continue this story.

MLQC Season 2 Chapter 15 (Kiro’s Chapter) Final Part [Invincible Position] & [Silver Promise] Translation [CN]
***SPOILERS*** DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED!!!
This is the final translation of Kiro’s chapter 15 in MLQC season 2. Since there wasn’t much left, I decided to combine the last two parts of the chapter into one. Thanks so much for waiting and hoped that you enjoyed reading~
For the previous translations of chapter 15: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4. Part 5, Part 6, Part 7
I highly recommend reading Kiro’s Rumors and Secrets: A Boulder of Hope (translated by the wonderful @link4eva ) that’s included with the chapter karma.
[Invincible Position]
As soon as Helios said the words, the boy’s pupils lost their focus, and his body was shaking uncontrollably, as if he had to squeeze all his life to fulfill this absolute command.
The silver-white arc of light from his feet instantly shoots outward like ripples.
The dazzling light gathered in the palm of his hand and then exploded into countless arches, jumping around.
Joker’s calm expression finally broke. He struggled to get up and raised his hand with difficulty.
But nothing can be changed.
The moment the silver-white arc appeared, we had won.
In the next moment, some chaotic voices loomed outside the department store.
The boy’s body shook violently. Soon, the light dissipated and he fell to his knees helplessly, completely drained from the immense amount of energy used.
Probably this huge unstable force caused a certain amount of chaos in the city at the moment of transfer, but at least—
All of them left the misty Loveland City safely.
Helios smirked and was about to say something but suddenly a pool of blood spilled from his mouth.
Tumblr media
MC: Helios!
I ran to him in a hurry, just barely managed to catch his quivering body. The strong smell of blood instantly filled my nose.
I carefully avoided the wound on his body and helped him up, took his gun and let him lean on my back, blocking Joker from him.
The knife in Helios’ hand was chilling in the light, and the blood-stained silver pistol was also extremely heavy.
But I still held it up straight and pointed it at Joker.
Helios: What are you doing?
MC: I will protect you.
Even though I know we have won, Joker is still here.
As long as he is still here, we must not let our guard down.
Tumblr media
MC: I will protect you.
I repeated it again, without calling his name.
Joker: It turns out you did it on purpose.
Helios: Are you just realizing that now?
With a trembling hand, he took out the black metal box from his pocket and pressed one of the buttons.
The screen showed the city map of Loveland City. He glanced down, raised his head and smiled softly.
I followed his gaze and Joker frowned.
He glanced at the young boy who was sitting on the ground and his cold eyes revealed his anger at this moment.
Joker: Your goal was him from the beginning. You were using me.
Joker: A clever hunter must know when it is the best time to be injured, and then use the wound to attract its prey.
Joker: Unexpectedly, you are a very good actor.
Helios: Don’t be discouraged, you flatter me. This game is not bad, right?
MC: ….?
Could it be that Helios was injured deliberately?
I stared blankly at him trying to understand the meaning of their conversation.
He pretended to let me hypnotize the boy, then hid his Evol and purposely exposed his flaws.
He wanted to use this method to divert Joker’s attention and at the same time, consuming Joker’s physical strength.
When the time was right, he took advantage of Joker’s vulnerability and used Evol to command the boy to move the whole city away and save everyone.
He thought of everyone’s circumstances, figured out how to save others, and put me in the safest position in advance.
But he never considered himself. In order to ensure everyone’s safety, he let himself get injured.
My whole body was shaking, my back facing him, holding the pistol, my eyes were beginning to sting.
He slowly straightened his body, stretched out his sweat- and blood-soaked arm, wrapped it around my waist, and moved in front of me.
Sensing my gaze, he turned his head to look at me, his eyes had a certain light in them.
As if not caring about the scars on his body and trying to comfort me so that I don’t have to worry about him.
The boy who fell on the ground was panting heavily and then finally reacted, staring cruelly at Helios.
Teenage Boy: Da--damn it. You cheated!
Helios: You are so stupid.
Helios slowly stood up with my help.
The simple action seemed to consume all his energy but he didn’t stop, struggling to straighten his back, and looked down at Joker.
Helios: The current Loveland is just an empty city.
Helios: No one’s life will be threatened, no more conflicts will occur, and no one will die because of the hunter game.
Helios: You have lost the bargaining chip with me.
Tumblr media
Helios: You lose.
Joker raised up his head, no emotions could be seen in his dark gray eyes.
Joker: As long as the fog still remains, the game can continue.
Joker: You can send people out but I can send people back again.
Joker: No one can stop it until I have the answer.
His nonchalant attitude made me a little angry. The tragedy I saw in the hunter game was so vivid that I couldn’t help but speak.
Tumblr media
MC: ….What do you take human life for!
MC: No one is your experiment and tool to achieve your goals!
MC: No matter what you want to accomplish with the hunter game, it doesn’t matter if you are looking for CORE or looking for the lighthouse…
MC: You can’t turn a blind eye to life. No one can do that.
Joker’s expression moved slightly. He looked at me casually for a while, then spoke after a long time.
Joker: You know a lot.
Joker: But everything needs to be proven.
Joker: The formula on the paper, the theorems, and…
Joker: The ambiguity of the world.
Joker: The hunter game is just a method of experimentation.
Joker: All sacrifices and trials are necessary on the road to truth.
Joker: The world needs answers and if you can’t grasp it, you will never move forward.
Joker’s voice was faint but his eyes remained unwavering.
I was taken aback for a moment and I didn’t understand what Joker was referring to.
What does he want to prove?
He seems to have more secrets than I thought, like a complex mathematical equation. No matter how ridiculous his methods are, he will not stop.
Helios: No matter what you want to argue, you should not exchange innocent lives for answers.
Joker: Our position is different, there is no need to discuss it.
Helios: Don’t be too impatient.
Helios: I haven’t taken out my bargaining chip yet so how do you know that there is no need for discussion.
Helios looked at him calmly, speaking slowly, word for word.
Helios: You disperse the fog and I will take you to the lighthouse.
My heart jumped and I looked at Helios in surprise. He stared at Joker but secretly squeezed my hand, silently telling me not to speak.
Joker’s gaze fell on Helios, as if interested in his words.
Helios seemed to chuckle slightly and continued.
Helios: Evol energy fluctuations are not the only way to open the lighthouse.
Helios: You have worked hard but you have gone too far.
Joker: Why should I believe your words?
Tumblr media
Helios: The thorny slab of the “8” sign, the transparent steps, the residual intelligence…
Helios: If you have entered the lighthouse, you should know what I am talking about.
Teenage Boy: Surely, you are deceiving us. There is no residual intelligence in the lighthouse!
Although the boy was powerless on the ground, he still retorted righteously, as if he was quite sure that Helios was lying.
I was taken aback for a moment, looked at Joker and found that he also showed a somewhat puzzled expression.
Helios didn’t speak and looked carefully at Joker for a while, suddenly the corners of his lips curled up, seeming to understand something.
Helios: It seems that you have never opened the lighthouse.
Teenage Boy: Nonsense, we have been inside many lighthouses!
Helios grinned and raised his eyebrows casually.
Helios: Are you sure?
Joker: Did you see the residual intelligence?
Joker spoke suddenly. There was no expression on his face, but I inexplicably heard a trace of apprehension in his voice.
Helios’ gaze stayed on Joker’s face for a moment, and then he answered directly.
Helios: It depends on your attitude to find out if I’m telling the truth.
There was finally a crack in Joker’s expression and he took a deep breath as if hiding his emotions.
Helios: Let’s talk about the conditions again.
Helios: I will take you to the lighthouse and you tell her how to disperse the fog.
Helios: Also, let her leave safely.
[Silver Promise]
Helios’s words pierced my heart like a sharp knife, and I grasped his hand tightly and looked at him anxiously.
Tumblr media
MC: I’m not leaving. I’m going with you.
Helios has suffered such a serious injury and there are still many things we don’t know about Joker….
In any case, I can’t let him go to the lighthouse with Joker alone.
Helios: This has nothing to do with you.
His tone was firm. I opened my mouth and wanted to say something, but Joker interrupted.
Joker: I can agree to your terms.
Joker: I’ll let her go and resolve the fog.
Joker: However, I need to prove first that you can indeed open the lighthouse.
Helios: You have no room for negotiation with me.
Helios interrupted Joker and his eyes were cold.
Helios: Tell her how to get rid of the fog, and then ask your lackey to send her away.
Helios: If you still want to go to the lighthouse, do as I say.
MC: W-wait….
Tumblr media
Helios: Listen carefully.
He leaned close to my ear, and his tone was softer than ever before.
Helios: You need to disperse the fog in Loveland City.
Helios: So that the game can truly end.
He looked into my eyes with a commanding tone but comfort and encouragement lurked in those depths.
Helios: You want to save everyone and find that healthy Loveland City again.
His tone eased slightly, but his eyes were firm and left no room for argument.
I know he is right, and if I linger any longer, I will only drag him down and I can’t let him lose everything that he has done.
MC: But your body….
Helios: The wound looks scarier than it actually is. It’s not fatal.
I bit my lip, tried to restrain the urge to cry, and nodded gently.
Tumblr media
MC: Okay, I promise you.
MC: But you have to promise me one thing.
MC: After the matter is over, you must contact me as soon as possible to let me know you are safe.
He bends the corners of his lips, the expression on his face softens considerably and I seem to see Kiro.
Tumblr media
Helios: I promise you.
He raised his hand, lightly wiped the corner of my eye, and then let go of my hand.
The moment my palm lost the warm touch, my heart was empty as if I was torn open.
I turned around, not daring to take another look at Helios, fearing that I would regret making this decision if I delay it for another second.
The moment I walked to the boy’s side, I still couldn’t help but turn my head and look at Helios standing in the shadows.
Helios: “Wait for me to come see you.”
In the faint silver-white arc of light, I saw him open his mouth slightly.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and then, darkness swept through my vision.
Tumblr media
The boy teleported me to the weather station in Loveland City and reluctantly told me that the special substance to eliminate the fog was hidden under the weather station.
After the teenage boy disappeared, I did not give myself too much time to process my emotions and started to work on dispelling the fog.
I contacted Zehn and asked him to send someone outside the city to find the weather station staff in the shortest time and bring them back to the city safely as soon as possible.
After that, I arranged for the BS researcher to come quickly and sample the special substance and swiftly conduct analysis and research on it.
While I was waiting, I started to edit the news about “Loveland City has successfully dispelled the toxic fog” on my mobile phone and prepared to release it after the fog was successfully eliminated.
Soon, the staff of the weather station returned and according to the analysis, many large metal cans without labels were found in the underground warehouse.
The staff frowned, seeming to know exactly what it was, and quickly picked up a jar and ran to a certain research room.
I took a step back slightly, turned and walked into the lounge.
At this point, this is something that can only be left to the professionals to do.
I looked at the vast white fog outside the window, but my heart was extremely peaceful.
“Boom—”
Mist containers scattered into the distance and exploded violently.
Upon release of those containers, the treacherous fog slowly disappeared and the night sky of Loveland City finally revealed a small array of stars.
The real midnight of Loveland City has come at last.
After confirming that the fog has dissipated, I posted the news bulletin to various social platforms, hoping that this information can spread faster.
When I was finished, it was already dawn, and a bit of cold morning light was reflected in the sky, and I stood in front of the window, my mind full of thoughts.
I looked up at the untouched starry sky and a rush of stinging pain surged in my heart.
Tumblr media
MC: Kiro…
The superhero fulfilled his promise.
He returned the former Loveland City to everyone.
But no one knows how much he paid for this and no one knows whether he is safe.
I clenched my hands tightly, praying in my heart over and over again that he would come back safely as soon as possible.
“Buzz—”
There was a vibration from my phone and I quickly picked it up. After seeing the name on the screen, my prayers were finally answered.
Helios didn’t say much on the phone. He only asked me to meet at the bridge’s edge.
I hurriedly left the weather station, only to find that the sky was already bright and some people had gradually started returning to Loveland City.
The police sirens kept blaring along the way, “caution” tape was set up in every corner of the city, and several helicopters hovered in the air.
The Loveland City government and related agencies are actively doing recovery and post-work.
Maybe Loveland will return to the old days soon.
Thinking about this, I quickened my steps.
Upon arriving at the river, I saw Helios sitting on the railing of the bridge from a distance.
He sat there alone, his silver hair almost blending in with the blue sky of dawn.
My footsteps stopped, and seeing him like this, I felt a pang of emptiness in my heart.
Tumblr media
Helios seemed to hear my footsteps and turned to look at me.
He has changed his clothes and all his injuries from yesterday were covered under the neat clothes, as if nothing had ever happened.
His expression is still so cold, but after everything that happened yesterday, I know that there is already something different.
I steadied my breathing and met his gaze.
Helios: I came to honor the promise.
Helios: You did very well.
MC: How are you?
Helios: Aren’t I standing in front of you unharmed?
I was slightly taken aback.
MC: What about Joker? Has the lighthouse issue been resolved?
He didn’t answer, just took the familiar metal box from his pocket and tossed it to me.
I caught the metal box in the air and saw an ocean sector displayed on the screen with many active coordinates on it.
Helios: These are the coordinates of all the players who were teleported away by “ghosts” in the game.
Helios: According to the map, they were trapped on a small island in the sea.
Helios:  I will start from Joker’s side to investigate the whereabouts of this group of people.
Helios: I have erased your information from the system. Joker will not find you.
Helios: There are also the coordinates of all the players in this device. I need you to be my eyes in Loveland City and always pay attention to their movements.
MC: What about you? Where are you going?
MC: You haven’t answered me yet. Has Joker’s problem been settled?
I subconsciously blurted out the question in my mind. I am pretty sure he is hiding something from me.
What he said seemed like he was going to some dangerous place.
Following his profile, I once again saw the strange-shaped earphone in his right ear, and my breathing became still.
Helios looked at me steadily, his eyes shining, but he was silent.
He seemed to have noticed my stare. After lowering his gaze slightly, he reached out and took off the earphone.
His eyes closed slowly, and when they opened later, the azure blue pupils were coated with a layer of piercing golden light.
At that moment, I seemed to hear the sound of a string that was always tight being torn off.
I closed my eyes and tried to suppress the constant bitterness.
Tumblr media
MC: Are you going to use your power again?
MC: You want me to listen your orders and leave, right?
MC: Still want me to forget? Forget all this, forget about your ears.
I stubbornly opened my eyes, struggling with the silent person in front of me.
This is an unspoken conversation. Many things have changed since he commanded the boy.
Helios: You should have forgotten.
Helios: But I don’t want you to.
I stared at him blankly and was suddenly locked in place by his words.
The morning wind pulled the hem of his clothes and the dawn behind him broke through the thick clouds at some point and spread over his shoulders.
His whole body was bathed in a layer of warm gold.
Helios: I want you to always remember everything about me.
Helios: No matter…..what kind of me.
I blinked hard, the whole world became a little brighter, but only those golden pupils made my eyes become hot and damp.
MC: What I remember is always about you.
It’s you: the light is you, the darkness is also you.
From beginning to end, all I envisioned was him.
Hearing what I said, a faint smile appeared on Helios’ face.
Helios: I need you to stay.
Helios: Because only in this way can I feel at ease.
Helios: But just saying that, it is still you who is solely delivering trust.
I watched him approach me step by step in doubt, lowering his head, those golden eyes magnified in front of me, allowing me to see a complete self.
Tumblr media
Helios: So you can command me.
MC: Me command you?
Helios: This is your privilege.
He bent down, raised his hand and gently brushed my hair behind my ears, his expression calm and relaxed, waiting for me quietly.
MC: I command you—
I looked into his eyes, knowing that it had no real effect, but I knew it was his own way to seal a promise that only belongs to us.
MC: You must come back safely.
The corners of his lips curled upward and the brilliant light fell in his eyes.
Tumblr media
Helios: Wait for me to return.
His voice fell and he walked to the far side of the bridge without looking back. His back gradually disappeared at the end of the bridge.
I close my palms and tell myself in my heart—
He will come back safely.
This is our agreement.
In the ancient and mysterious giant building, the light from the walls faintly appeared.
The silhouette formed by the lines stood in front of Helios and Joker but was silent.
Joker circled the empty hall and walked back to where he was.
Tumblr media
Joker: You lied.
Helios stood calmly in the shadows, as if he had anticipated the current situation.
Tumblr media
Helios: Didn’t you lie to me too?
He looked at Joker and his expression gradually became colder.
In a remote corner of Loveland City, a faint mist floats quietly in a hidden dark place.

one that some might not deem normal but works well for us lol (I mean, we’ve been friends for about 10 years now) we have a good understanding of each other and know we don’t have to talk/hang out all the time in order to know we still matter to each other, we both have our own lives and just knowing the other is there no matter what is enough. we’re the type to not talk for weeks and then send random memes and act like we’d been talking the whole time😂 it works really well for me too cause i’m not good at “socializing” on a constant basis and tend to just...not text people for ages on end, but I’ll still care for them and think about them just many see it as me cutting them out rip
