WORD WITH YOUR TAGS BTW I’d take absolutely anything but if it was at all possible I’d love as many seiyuu’s recasted as possible. if they’ve retired or don’t want to them I’d (begrudgingly) accept new VA’s, of course!! but god I can only dream that we could get as many as possible back on board. I just know the one they could not replace (but wouldn’t have to) is Reborn. I’ve seen problems around Chrome’s VA; she was the VA of a Bandori character (Gacha rhythm game) and she had to step back from her role for health reasons (I don’t recall what they are but also she had to play an instrument at physical concerts so she was exerting a lot of energy for the role). I just wanna cling on to as many as possible for nostalgia reasons tbh skdnckcjdj. and you’re right ahhh Hayato’s voice is, I feel, a very core aspect of his character. so I’d hope if they had to replace him, they were super picky about who they choose to properly pull him off. tbh I think the voices of all the characters are very important to them!! ahh I’m rambling my bad but skndkcjc
i'm also hanging on for nostalgia reasons akjsakd i think we all are. i've watched the anime so many times i just can't imagine gokudera's "J U U D A I M E" sounding any different. his voice is so characteristic and recognizable, i link it so much to who gokudera is as a character that it pains me so much to know he most likely could get a new va in the reboot. i can't even imagine who they would cast (granted i'm not into newer anime so) but gokudera in the og anime had his silly moments, and his serious/angry moments, and his voice actor nailed those emotions in him and i just--love him a lot and i wish they can cast someone great for the role. like, if they have to recast the main namimori trio, i can only hope they do the kids right.
the only one that's non-negotiable for me is reborn. reborn and neeko in the role are like, the heart and soul of the khr anime. everyone else--yeah i would be upset but i could live with it.
ESPECIALLY BC most reborn characters have a catchphrase, a running gag, or something they are known for--like gokudera's 10th, yamamoto's laugh, squalo's V O I, lambo's gotta stay calm, mukuro's laugh, hibari's i'll bite you to death--it just goes on and on and on. i feel like any va they choose it's gotta be someone who holds a candle to the original anime. say whatever you want about og khr, but the one thing they got right was the voice acting imo
anygays i'm rambling too askdjal point is, if there is one, i want the khr reboot to be treated with love and attention.

hi lovely!! found it hehe,,, here’s your comfort fic! i hope you like it! mwah <3
Tumblr media
miya atsumu is a great texter.
not just in the sense that his ability to hold conversations is immaculate, and not just because your messages between him are overflowing with extravagant voice notes and an endless amount of objectively unattractive up close photos of his face. it’s because he always, always, without a shadow of doubt, no matter the hour, day, week, month, replies within the second. you’d jokingly accused him of being addicted to his phone, until you realized, aside his brother, you were the only exception — that’s also because he has some ridiculous ringtone for your calls and messages, but you pretend to be oblivious of that fact.
as you grip your phone with shaky hands and stare at your screen through bleary eyes, you watch as your message gets delivered, then read almost immediately after.
can i please be with you right now?
a grey bubble appears, hovering at the bottom of your screen, three dots rolling evenly within it. it then disappears, and in its place a message materializes.
of course. should i pass by or leave my window open?
already, your chest feels lighter.
fifteen minutes later, he’s before you, donning a simple shirt and sweatpants, sneakers on his feet. his smile is bright when his eyes meet yours, and his arms are home when they come to wrap around you, pulling you in close, embracing you tightly. your own arms easily slip around his waist, the feel of him beneath the thin shirt grounding and steadying. you release a shaky breath just as he squeezes you reassuringly, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of your head.
“heya, gorgeous,” he softly greets you, leaning back slightly to take a look at you. hesitantly, slowly, your head lifts off of his chest, arms still wrapped around him. his smile visibly falters at the sight of you, it saddens and softens, but it doesn’t disappear. although a little forcefully, he urges his smile to widen, and brings a hand up to the string of your hoodie, tugging and teasing, “nice hoodie.”
against all odds, you scoff amusingly, rolling your eyes. “yeah, you’d think so,” you retort, and he laughs lightly.
gently, he twists you around to pull you to his side, an arm tossed around and over your shoulder. “so, what’re we thinkin’?” he wonders aloud. “convenience store ramen?” atsumu tilts his head towards you, and when your nose scrunches in disapproval, his does too in mimicry, and then he shakes his head. “convenience store ice cream?” he says it as if it’s a genius idea, a victorious grin on his face, until he’s met with another disapproving look.
“m’not really hungry, ‘tsumu,” you begin to argue, despite knowing how fruitless the attempt is.
“tha’s not what i’m askin’.” he feigns offense as he says this, before he tilts his head back, thoughtfully humming. you watch him in both slight amusement and endearment. he’s really cute, you think, with the slight pout to his lips and the messiness of his hair. it’s obvious that he’d just rolled out of bed after having taken a shower, if not for his hair then for the comforting smell you sense. he’s sturdy by your side, body easy and relaxed against you, leaning into your touch just as much as you lean into him. he hums again, speaking to himself in hushed tones, and you think again, he’s really, really cute.
“you’re really cute, ‘tsumu,” you voice, and atsumu stops his deep and thoughtful monologue about the importance of a decision like choosing where to eat at eleven pm. when he turns to face you, you offer him an easy smile, before urging him arm tighter around you again, and continuing your walk.
“ya think i’m cute?”
“well, i am dating—“
his arm falls from around you to his side, and he halts in his steps.
“cute?!”
you pause, turning to the side to fix him with a humored, confused stare. he’s wearing a shocked expression, eyes wide and mouth slightly parting. it makes you want to giggle. “is that a bad thing?” you wonder.
with a whine, atsumu deflates, his arms tossed to his side, hands slapping his thighs as if he were a toddler throwing a tantrum. “yer cute,” he begins to argue. “yer cute ‘n pretty n’ gorgeous ‘n very hot.”
you quirk an eyebrow. “thanks?”
“but i’m handsome, babe. devilishly han’some if you will. sexy. charming. hot—“
“thought i was hot?”
“m’not taking you to mcdonald’s anymore.”
you gasp, reaching out for his forearms and gripping them tightly. atsumu runs warm, always has and possibly always will, that it’s always a welcome feeling touching him. unless you were in the middle of summer beneath a thousand blankets, but that’s not your current concern. “how did you know i was craving nuggets?” you wonder, exasperated and in awe.
he lifts up a finger and tilts his chin back, as if prepared to make a very important note. “not only am i devilishly handsome—“
“‘tsumu.”
“you’re always craving nuggets, doll.”
a fair argument, you guess.
“— and i’m psychic.”
you smack his arm.
Tumblr media
“finger. guns, babe. finger guns!”
you lift your hand up in motion of a gun, but instead, you flip your boyfriend off, sipping slowly through the staple yellow and white straw. condensation from the cup in your grip drips to your knuckles, slowly trailing down your hand.
your gesture is met with a deadpan expression before atsumu twists around away from you. he’s facing a bench in the middle of an empty public park, his phone propped up against the back of the bench and opened up on the camera app. in the small lower left corner of the screen is a small preview of a picture you’d just taken together: it’s cheesy and honestly a little cringe, with atsumu doing a ridiculous pose with finger guns, and a you with a hesitant peace sign. it’s what led you to this moment— he just really wants you to do some finger guns with him.
facing the phone, atsumu bends down and clicks on his screen, while you take another long sip. upon buying a ridiculous amount of fries, nuggets, and two burgers, the two of you had walked for a few moments, not so quietly because atsumu has the long lived habit of never knowing when to quite stop talking, until you’d reached the park. beneath a dying tree, the two of you sat and ate, watched the stars through the branches of the aged tree while atsumu explained you the ridiculous justification behind punching his brother earlier in the day during practice. after a while, he’d gotten the great idea of taking pictures together, despite the terrible lighting, obscure setting, and not the most fitting choice of outfits.
you’re slightly lost in thought, and honestly atsumu is a little too fast for his own good, that you don’t notice him barreling towards you until he’s right before you. you’re too late, and suddenly he’s kneeling, arms wrapping around your thighs, lifting you up high. he leaves you with no choice but to quickly wrap your arms around his neck, leaning in close until your cheek is pressed to his. he holds you tight to him and you barely see the flash turn off before you’re lifting yourself up again, staring down at him with a fake scowl.
“why would you do that?” you scold him, pinching at his arm as he drops you to your feet again.
he mumbles a small ouch at your pinch, rubbing at his sore arm as he defends himself, “well ya weren’t doing the finger guns!”
“finger guns are stupid.”
“yer face is stupid.”
“your face is stupid.”
“like hell it is.” rather stupidly, atsumu spreads his arms wide, showcasing himself. “i’ve got so much to offer.” to humble him, you reach out, hand splaying on his stomach and fingers wiggling. he’s quick to react, curling in on himself slightly and grasping your wrist tightly, fixing you with a warning, cold stare. “do not.”
you giggle wickedly, and wiggle your fingers again. atsumu shrieks, holding your wrist away from his stomach.
it’s a good thing you’ve got two hands.
Tumblr media
it’s nearly two in the morning when he first yawns. unintentionally, guilt starts to creep up your spine, settling heavy on your shoulders and chest. atsumu notices, as he always does, but instead of mentioning it, he shuffles down on the bench, and leans slightly towards you until his head rests on your shoulder. with the feel of him against you once more, you will yourself to relax, and reach for the hand closest to you, intertwining your fingers with his.
“yer so fun,” he mumbles, and you feel the vibrations from his voice. as he sighs contently, you finally do properly relax, and shuffle low until your head rests above his.
“you are too,” you respond. “only when you’re not doing finger guns.”
he scoffs. “ya love me ‘n my finger guns.” he lifts up a hand, and clicks his tongue as he motions a gun. jokingly, you slap at his hand, pushing it away.
the wind whistles softly, calmly, and atsumu’s hair tickles your cheek.
“i don’t wanna go home,” you admit with a small voice, smaller than you’d wish.
atsumu presses himself closer to you, thumb tracing at the back of your hand. “we can jus’ stay here,” he offers. “sunrises are pretty.”
you hum thoughtlessly.
“we can watch it from my room too, if ya’d like.”
your heart stills, and you swallow thickly. “you sure?”
he nods. “you’ll always have a home with me.” it’s not an offer, but a fact.
twisting your head, you place a kiss to the top of his head, the familiar scent of his shampoo overwhelming your senses for a moment. “i do love you and your finger guns,” you whisper against his hair, reveling in the loud laugh that leaves his lips as you twist your head back to rest it against his again.
quietly, sincerely, you laugh with him.

corpse husband x fem!reader
warnings: cursing, drugs, alcohol, insinuation of sex.
a note: thank you so much for your support on part one! uh, i haven’t written in years and coming back to tumblr has been a weird yet lovely ride. hope you enjoy this part two.
part 1 - next
tag list is open!
y/n closed the door behind her quietly.
she looked around the hallway, trying to see if any of her friends were around, but all she could find were some girls drunkly talking, waiting to go into the bathroom. she knocked on the door twice, having agreed that that was the code for coast clear. without looking back, she made her way through the hallway and then the stairs, before going to the kitchen.
she sighed heavily, and made her best to check that her clothes and hair were OK and not too much of a giveaway of what had just happened. she looked at the array of drinks in front of her, and grabbed a bottle of tequila to pour.
as she was looking for shot glasses, rae and lily bursted into the kitchen.
“y/n, there you are!” lily shouted, even though they were alone. she sounded a lot drunker than when they had left y/n before.
rae laughed and took a hold of lily, balancing her, before looking at y/n. “yeah we’ve been looking for yo- oh my god what happened to your hair?”
y/n’s hands instinctively rose up to her hair, her eyes wide and paranoid. “i- oh god. is it that bad?”
rae burst out laughing, lily just looked at them confused, too drunk to understand the unspoken context. “oh god y/n! WHO and HOW and WHEN? we were only gone for like forty minutes!”
y/n finally found the shot glasses and poured herself a shot of tequila, which she quickly downed before serving herself another one. “please don’t judge me,” she said, before taking the shot she had just poured.
“please don’t tell me you fucked e/n,” rae retorted, still holding lily up by the shoulders.
“oh my god please tell me you slept with e/n, it would be the gossip of the week!” lily said, just excited to have any kind of drama to talk about. their group of friends was great, no doubt about it, but it needed some spice some days. nothing too serious, of course, but enough to provide entertainment, that’s all lily wanted.
y/n let out a snort. “no fucking way. he’s so sleazy! i can’t believe i ever dated that guy.”
“so...” rae wiggled her eyebrows at the girl, “who was it then? do we know them?”
y/n gulped. “it was.... it was no one okay. it was just a random dude.” she wasn’t technically lying, but it still felt weird to hide this from her two closest friends in LA. rae and lily gasped and looked at each other, but before they could say anything, y/n continued: “i know, i know, i swore off men and random hook ups, but...” y/n paused, thinking of corpse and about what had just gone on in the bathroom mere moments ago, “he was charming, what can i say?”
“oh my god, you have to point him out later on- was it good? it looks like it was good, you’re practically glowing!”
y/n blushed and put her face in her hands, looked at rae from in between her fingers. “yeah, it was great. anyway,” she got in between her two friends, “how about we go and we dance a little?”
***
corpse left the bathroom a few minutes after he heard the two knocks on the door. as he went into the hallway, he barely caught y/n going down the stairs. his mind was racing. that had just happened. he had followed her into the bathroom, hoping to not get caught by any of their friends, and in between the kissing, the unbuttoning, the desperate need for skin on skin contact, they established a few rules.
1. no feelings. this, whatever it may become, will remain strictly physical.
2. no one can know. if anyone finds out they might pressure them to get into a relationship, or worse, it might ruin the group’s dynamic.
3. no jealousy. they are allowed to see other people as long as they keep each other updated, for health and safety reasons.
it was fairly simple and straightforward. of course, rule number one had sort of already been broken on his part since he did have a crush on her but, he thought, it could be easily pushed away. not like he was in love with her.
as he walked down the hallway, ready to rejoin everyone downstairs, he felt a hand against his shoulder. he turned around to find jack, drunk of course, smiling at him. “corpse! my guy! where have you been for the past hour?”
“i... i was talking to that group of girls,” corpse said, pointing to the girls waiting outside the bathroom. “although i got a little freaked out when they offered me snow.”
jack laughed. “well, i won’t offer you snow, but let’s go get some shots. you look way too sober compared to me, my man.” corpse laughed and let himself follow the irishman, trying his best to not think about y/n and what they had just done.
***
as people woke up the next morning, the ever so familiar hangover headache started infecting most of the people who had gone to mark’s party.
lily and y/n had gone over to rae’s apartment to spend the night. the two friends insisted y/n point out who it was that she had slept with at the party, but the girl simply told them, very regretfully, that he had already left, probably to never be seen again.
lily was presently throwing up in rae’s toilet, having been the most drunk out of the three friends, while rae and y/n battled simultaneous headaches in the kitchen. as rae was making a much needed batch of coffee, and y/n was toasting some bread, lily dragged herself to the kitchen, tiredly proclaiming, “i am never drinking again.”
rae and y/n just laughed, both of them had been in the exact same situation, and they knew that lily would probably be drinking just as much the following week.
“so...” rae started, as she poured the now ready coffee into three mugs, “y/n. are we gonna get more deets on mr. bathroom?”
y/n groaned and let her head fall into her hands. “please don’t remind me that i did it in a bathroom, rae.”
rae snorted. “yeah, yeah, WHATEVER. you’re avoiding the question at hand, y/n. what was he like? where was he from? will you see him again? did he have a big d-“
“WOAH, woah, okay!” y/n interrupted rae before she could finish that last question. “he was nice. i didn’t ask where he was from. and no, i probably won’t see him again.” y/n looked down sheepishly at her mug, knowing that last answer was a straight up lie.
as a matter of fact, corpse had already texted her that morning to make sure that what had happened in the bathroom (and the rules they agreed upon) was OK. she appreciated the concern he had for her and the fact that he went out of his way to make sure she was comfortable. she replied to him saying that everything was good to go, and she honestly couldn’t wait to see him again. even rae, when she saw her in the kitchen, told her she was glowing.
“aw damn, that’s too bad! i wanted to meet this guy. hey, you still didn’t tell me how big his di-“
“oh my god guys please shut up, i’m dying over here.” lily interrupted rae this time, clearly too hungover to be interested in the subject at hand.
rae and y/n just laughed and started talking about other events that had transpired throughout the night, although y/n couldn’t keep her mind off of a certain curly haired guy.
***
corpse quietly made his way to the kitchen. him and jack had gotten home very late and very drunk, and he was already getting ready for toast to be kind of pissy at the whole affair. after all, he was kind enough to offer them his home while they were staying in LA.
corpse’s head was pounding, from the hangover or the anxiety of seeing y/n, he didn’t know. he had texted her to make sure that what happened the night before was OK, and to confirm that they were actually going to do this. he felt relief when she texted back that yeah, she wanted to seriously do this no strings attached sort of thing.
the curly haired man dragged his feet to the kitchen. he found toast there, already having breakfast, looking a little ticked off.
toast looked up at corpse from where he was seated. “you know, i love you and jack. but for the love of god, i’m never going to let you back into my apartment if it means you two getting home drunk as hell at four in the morning, screaming about how much you want chicken nuggets.”
corpse groaned and covered his face. he mumbled a quiet “i’m sorry,” before going to boil some water for tea. toast looked at his friend and decided the argument was sort of silly, and kindly laughed it off before saying, “it’s like you guys forgot mcdonald’s has delivery.”
once his tea was ready, corpse sat across from toast at the kitchen table. by then, sykkuno had also made his way into the room, and he said a quiet but sweet “good morning” to his two friends.
corpse was quietly drinking his tea when toast noticed it. “holy shit,” he started, “what is that on your neck?” it wasn’t long before toast was laughing incredibly hard. corpse immediately pulled out his phone and opened the camera, trying to get a look at his neck.
y/n had left him a hickey.
sykkuno made his way over to the table and peeked at corpse’s neck, before gasping and bring his hand to cover his mouth. “corpse, oh my god!” he said between laughs.
corpse felt his face grow red, before putting his hand on his neck to try and make the hickey disappear.
toast was still laughing when he asked, “who gave you that corpse?!”
“i... well it was-“
“can you all please stop laughing so fucking loud? my head fucking hurts.” corpse was thankful for jack’s interruption. he was quickly trying to come up with a cover up story for the hickey on his neck.
“corpse has a hickey!” sykkuno informed jack. the irishman’s eyes widened at the statement and immediately he went over to tear away corpse’s hand from his neck.
“so that’s what you were doing with the girls outside the bathroom, huh?” corpse sighed with relief. jack came up with the cover up on his own.
“uh, yeah. i hooked up with one of them in the bathroom. they offered me coke after and that’s when i found you, jack.”
“un-fucking-believable. i miss being 23 and being able to pull shit like that off.” jack sat down next to him at the table.
“pfft! as if you had half the game corpse has when you were in your 20s, jack,” toast said, trying to tease his friend a little.
“oh shut the fuck up toast! as if your game is any better than mine, huh?”
corpse just laughed, bringing his hand back up to cover his hickey.
“are you gonna see the girl again corpse? what was she like anyway?” sykkuno asked.
“uh, she was nice. i probably won’t see her again though, i’m not really looking for a relationship right now.”
ah, but he would see her again. he actually couldn’t wait to get his hands on her once more, even if it meant more hickeys for his friends to find and make fun of.

Favours - Part Two
Mafia AU!Levi Ackerman  X Fem!Reader
Part One // Part Three
A/N: Thanks guys, now look what you did. - Nemo
Summary:  You meet with the head of the Ackerman family. An agreement is struck, and a plan formed - even if it wasn’t the one he had originally planned.
Warning(s): Language. Mentions of dismemberment.
Listening to: ‘Looking at Me’ by Sabrina Carpenter (slowed) - ‘Did I catch your attention? You look like you lost your breath.’
Masterlist
You’d seen this many men in one place before. Back at your first family meeting. You didn’t like it then. You definitely didn’t like it now.
Even though there were only five other people at the table - the fact they were all men didn’t sit well with you.
As soon as you sat down, one of the blond’s at Levi’s side introduced you to everyone. He was Erwin Smith, and the one opposite him was Furlan Church. Then closest to you on either said was Miche Zacharias and Mobilt Berner.
You did like learning people names, but you hated the formalities.
“Erwin I appreciate the introductions, but we all know I’m not here for a meet-and-greet.”
Levi quirked an eye up at you from across the room.
“Well you are right.” Erwin said, leaning back in his seat and cast a glance at Levi. “So I suppose beating around the bush with formalities isn’t on the table anymore.”
Erwin raised his hand at Moblit, who then slid a piece of paper in front of you. You cast your eyes down to the card-like paper. The most noticeable thing was the coat of arms at the top, embedded into the paper with gold, and then two lines at the bottom - perfect for signatures. You didn’t need to read anything more to know it was meant as a signed deal.
You clicked your tongue, pressing the paper a little ways in front of you before looking up straight at Levi.
“Do you normally have your people talk for you?” you asked, gesturing to the others at the table as you shifted in your seat to cross your legs. “Or do I make you so nervous that your balls tighten and make your voice too squeaky to actually speak for yourself?”
Hange snickered beside you, covering it with a hand and some coughs. You, however, didn’t hide your coy smile as his eyes narrowed at you.
He leaned forward in his chair, and crossed his arms on the table.
“It’s either you had no backbone at all, or the strongest I’ll ever come across in my entire life.” he said, “You should’ve known even before you came in that you’ve barely gained enough recognition to be in the same room as me, let alone hear me speak.”
“You asked for me, not the other way around.” You quipped, smile quickly fading and your tone turned serious. “Don’t act like I was groveling at your feet like some dog to be here, because we both know I wasn’t.”
A few long moments passed, and neither you nor Levi even blinked to break the glares you were holding. He leaned back again.
“Care to take a walk, (y/n)?”
───────✱.。:。✱.:。✧.。✰✧.。:✱───────
“You’re smart, and quick,” he said, “Which is probably why you’ve grown so quickly.”
You’d both taken to the rooftop, leaning against one of the hand rails and sunglasses on. It seemed too casual, especially since everyone else was left either inside or in the patio that you both came from. Apparently Levi needed absolute privacy from all ears for this conversation.
“You’ve gotten the invitation too?” He asked.
“From Jaeger?” You said, and he nodded. “Yes I have.” You looked up at the skyline. It sure did have a nice view up here.
“I’ve hear it’s more for a meeting than a dinner. Rod Reiss is going to be there too. Apparently Zeke want’s to make a deal with all four of our families.” He shifted, now leaning his side on the rail rather than his back. “I want us to come to an agreement.”
“Why? What’s in it for you?” you asked. “And what’s in it for me?”
“Well,” he sighed, “If Jaeger wants to do something you, or I, don’t like, then we back each other up. If I wanna go one way, you go that way. If you wanna go one way, I go that way too.”
You turned to face him.
“What if I like what Jaeger wants to do, and you don’t?” you said. “What if he’s already come to me and told me what he wants and I already want it too?”
Zeke Jaeger had not done that.
“He hasn’t.” Levi said, crossing his arms. “But if that did happen, then I suppose I’d have no choice but to follow anyway. It’s what the deal says we’d do, so I’d do it.”
“Loyal are we Ackerman? Better not make it a fault of yours.”
“That mouth of yours better not be a fault either. People will have your tongue if you keep wagging it around like that.” He warned.
There were people out there who did that. Dismemberment. You’d never been on the receiving end of any such threat or treatment. Your father, however, had. He had a box delivered once, back when you were around eighteen years old. Inside was four fingers and a thumb.
“They’d have to get past them to do that.” you said, pointing over to Hange, Nanaba, and Mikasa. “And then they’d have to keep me still long enough to do it.” You smiled over at him. He shook his head - in disbelief or dismissal, you didn’t know.
“So, verdict?” he asked, the subject now back on track. “Deal or not?”
“How long is the contract for?”
“Six months,” he said, “Then it can be extended, or we can do away with it completely and act like we never had it to begin with.” You rubbed under your nose.
“How about this.” you offered, “The meeting with Zeke Jaeger will be a trial of sorts. We see how it goes for both our sides to make sure we like the deal and then make it official.”
He licked his lips, looking out at the other buildings and the slightly clouded sky as he thought. He turned back to you, shaded eyes flashing at you, and held out his hand.
“Fair.” He said, and you slipped your hand in his, shaking it.
“Fair. Business with you is a joy, Levi.” You said. “I have yet to know why people fear you so much.” You joked, leaning forward slightly. He rolled his eyes, turning you both back to walk back toward the patio.
“Wait long enough and I’m sure you’ll find out. Jean!” He barked, stepping up into the outdoor area and flicking off his sunglasses. “Call Miss. Shiv’s cars back around to the front.”
“Yessir.” Jean said, scurrying away from where he loitered at Mikasa’s side to disappear around a corner.
“Came to an agreement, I hope.” Erwin said, his mouth hovering against a crystal rocks glass as he smiled at you both.
“Of sorts.” you said, eyeing the blond and his almost twin as you parted from Levi’s side to join your girls. “Although not the agreement you hoped for, I think.”
Erwin looked at you, eyes glinting, and took a large swig from his glass before setting it down and casting a glance at Levi.
“Better than none, I suppose.” he said, pushing a glass over at Levi. “You’re not staying?”
“No, sorry.” you said, turning away from Nanaba to face Erwin properly. “Can’t have Jean running around for nothing, can we?” You flicked your collar, smiling at them. Erwin made a ‘sure’ face, while you caught Levi quirking his lips in a smile.
“Here we were thinking you had somewhere else to be.” Erwin’s almost-twin, Miche, said. Speaking for the first time. Pity it wasn’t worth much.
“Well I do have somewhere else to be - not here.”
With that you left, Hange shook her head at your antics as she and the other followed, finally leaving all the men behind.
“She sure is something.” Furlan said, sitting himself down on a couch across from where Erwin and Levi stood.
“She’s trouble.” Miche added.
“She’s powerful,” Erwin said, “We can use her and her smarts.”
“She’s an ally.” Levi said, tone a matter of finality. “Now we’ll treat her as such.”

“So, you and Boss Man had a nice talk, huh?” Hange said, now comfortably sprawled in the backseat of your car.
“He was definitely pleasant company, if that’s what you’re asking.”
“So it went well then?” Sasha asked, looked back at you both briefly through the rear-view mirror.
“Well enough that you can go through that McDonalds drive through.” You said, pointing to the golden arches just to your left.
“Oh, really!” You laughed and nodded.
“Sure. I’m paying.”

To The Top || A Marauders Band AU
Chapter One: The Night We Met
Read here on A03
Okay so before we begin please can you just state your name, age, and role?
Um, my name is Peter Pettigrew, I'm 78 years old and I was the lead singer of the Marauders.
Great, so Mr. Pettigrew where would you like to start?
Well, I guess we should start from the beginning, shouldn't we?
And when is that?
Whens the beginning? Well, that would be Christmas Eve 2017, that's the night when James met Lily.
//
"Honestly you could at least act like you want to be here," Petunia complained for the fifth time that night. Lily just rolled her eyes. She didn't want to be there. It was Christmas eve for goodness sake, she wanted to be at home in her pajamas watching Christmas movies with her parents and sister. She wanted to go to church (even though she had never been religious) and admire their set of the nativity before coming home and going to sleep to the sound of her parents trying to be as quiet as they could while dragging their presents down to the Christmas tree.
But instead, here she was, in a crowded pub surrounded by people she didn't know. Sure it'll look good on her Snapchat and maybe as the night goes on someone will do something stupid enough to give her a funny story to tell when she next sees her friends on boxing day (her bets was on the obviously drunk drummer of the band that was currently playing.) But until then she didn't want to be there and she certainly didn't want Petunia making her feel bad for it. Petunia only dragged her along because she has no friends of her own to take with her but despite what every sitcom tells you take it from Lily that a sister is not a "built-in best friend" a sister is just a sister, someone who you share parents with and have to live with until one of you moves out and that's it. At least for the Evans sisters that was it. Lily knew that not everyone hated their sibling and that in fact it wasn't supposed to be like that. She had grown up watching the Lupin brothers get along, they would play sports together, help one enough with their homework and protect each other with their lives. Watching them sometimes made Lily crave a sibling, completely forgetting that she had one of her own.
Maybe it's the age gap, Lily thought.
The band onstage had now started playing I wish it could be Christmas every day and the crowd was eating it up. There didn't seem to be one person in the pub who wasn't singing, lifting their glasses during the chorus, and wrapping their arm around whoever was closest. Lily liked this. From where she was stood at the bar she had a great view of everyone and was able to act like for a moment that she was a part of this moment like she wasn't just watching from the sidelines and was actually having a great time. That was until she had turned to her right and noticed that her sister had completely abandoned her at least.
"So much for sister bonding," she muttered, quickly downing the rest of her drink and squeezing her way through the crowd towards the beer garden.
As expected it was freezing outside, Lily was shivering and could see every breath she took, her hands already felt like they were going purple and her nose was so cold that it now started to hurt. But it was less noisy and easier to breathe outside. And besides, smoking wasn't allowed inside the pub.
After ten minutes, Lily started to regret her decision. she was only halfway through her cigarette, and her fingers felt like they were about to fall off. She was slightly jumping from the hells of her feet and wished dearly that she had wrapped up warmer than just a jumper and her coat.
Her only company was a group of men who were also smoking, they were paying her no mind but she couldn't help the feeling that they were judging her. Maybe they thought that she had been ditched by her friends, or was new in town and didn't yet have any friends. She wasn't sure which she would've preferred, to have shitty friends or no friends at all?
"'Scuse me?" a voice suddenly called out
Lily's head spun towards the source to see a boy, with brown skin, black messy hair, and square glasses making his way hesitantly towards her. "Hate to bother you but could I borrow a light?" he asked.
"Oh, yes, of course," Lily replied a little too quickly before pulling out her lighter and passing it to him. The boy nodded his head and lit his own cigarette.
"Thank you," he said politely and took a few puffs before talking again. "Having a nice night?" he asked.
Lily nodded her head and let out a little laugh, "Actually it's been a bit boring," she answered honestly. "Im here with my sister and she's sorta disappeared on me."
Bad. Bad. These are bad things to say to a stranger. Her mind screamed at her suddenly.
She quickly backtracked. "But I'm sure I'll find her... We have trackers on each other see and our parents are expecting us home," she rambled.
The boy just smiled and nodded along, when she had finished he set his beer down onto the table that was close by and took a seat still making sure that she knew she had his full attention. Lily took a few steps closer to him and put out her cigarette but she didn't sit down.
"Sounds rough," he replied. "I'm here with my mates, we just performed actually. I was the guitarist. I also sung"
Lily's eyes widened as if she was just realizing that she had been talking to an old friend all along, although really she didn't recognize him at all. "Oh yeah, I saw you inside you were great." she slightly lied. "So how long have you guys been together?" she asked, sitting down next to him.
The boy smiled, "Well we went to secondary school together and started playing there, at first it was just for a laugh but we've actually started to get into it and now we're hoping to somehow make a career out of it, and yeah it'll be hard we know that but were willing and surly that has to count for something."
"Well, no famous band today has ever gotten there by giving up have they?"
"Exactly! If we were to give up we would just be asking ourselves what if our entire life and that's not a life I want to live," he said, finishing off his drink and giving her a toothy grin. "I get scared though, believe me, I have no chance of doing this on my own and it worries me sometimes that the guys will back out. Frank doesn't really have the passion y'know? Like he likes it and you can tell but he isn't passionate about it and as for Sirius his family is a pain and hates the whole music business, they're trying to guilt-trip him. Y'know the whole "We didn't come all the way to London for you to become a rockstar" business. It's bullshit. He has a younger brother why don't they put all their eggs in his basket? That's why parents have more than one kid right? For when the first one turns out to be a disappointment you have a few more to fall back on?"
This made Lily laugh, "Well, as a younger sibling I can confirm that theory," she joked.
The boy laughed, "I wouldn't know, my parents didn't need a plan B they struck gold the first time." His words were now beginning to slur. It became quite clear to Lily that he probably wouldn't be saying these things if he wasn't under the influence.
"Well, at least you have a plan for what you want to do. I have no idea and my gap year has now turned into gap years and still no clue where I want to be a year from now. My parents don't care what I am so long as Im not working in McDonald's for the rest of my life."
"How's that going?'
"Terribly, cheers for asking. But at least Im getting money, it could be worse."
The boy nodded, "Could be a lot worse," he agreed. "You could be dead."
It took everything Lily had to stop her from replying with I wish.
They were silent for a while, the only sound that could be heard was the racket coming from inside as the cold how now even become too much for the group of men that were out earlier. The conversation seemed to have come to a close. Lily didn't want it to.
"So where are your friends now?" she asked.
The boy looked behind him, towards the door leading to the bar, and then back at her before simply shrugging. "God knows. Maybe one of them is hooking up with your sister right now."
Lily laughed and lightly punched his arm, "Don't be so rude!" she exclaimed. The boy laughed and nudged her with his shoulder, "Im only giving suggestions. Perhaps we should get searching for them, it is really cold out here and I've got to make sure that they don't get into too much trouble."
Lily didn't really want to leave, but now that he had mentioned it the cold was coming back to being a problem and she couldn't expect him to stay out in it just for her pure entertainment while his friends could be missing for all they knew, so she nodded and stood up.
"I'm Lily, by the way," she smiled and stretched out her hand. "Lily Evans."
The boy curled his lip and took her hand, kissed her knuckle, and shook it. "Pleasure to meet you, Lily Evans. I'm James Potter."

the woes of an unrequited crush-luther hargreeves (part ii)

Tumblr media
It had been exactly 5 months, 28 days, 34 minutes, and 12 seconds since you’d last spoken to Luther... not that anyone was counting. Your junior year of college had just started and you were living in a new apartment with Sophie and Charlotte, with a new room mate this year, named Kayla. If anyone asked, your summer had been great. You’d had the opportunity to work with your advisor as part of a program your college offered, doing summer research. Your classes were off to an amazing start and you’d even gotten a new, high-paying job at your university’s writing center.
In all honesty, your summer had sucked. You had gotten so far in over your head with the research program and your grandfather had died just three weeks before the start of the new semester. Your living situation was beyond awkward, with Sophie and Charlotte making it a point to never bring any of the Hargreeves over, or even say any of their names. Kayla was kind and sweet and she did her best to include you, but it wasn’t the same. Your birthday was coming up, and you were dreading it more than anything. A year ago, Sophie and Charlotte had banded together, pulling out all the stops, giving you the best birthday you’d ever had. Now... now you weren’t sure what to even expect. You sighed as the cool air hit you as you opened the door to the building, heading down the hall to your advisors office. The woman was kind and young and new to the university and a lot of students drifted towards her when they needed a nice chat or help with citations or a good talk about the Cold War. She’d been sympathetic to your situation, even if you withheld some of the details. She didn’t need to be bogged down with all your petty personal life drama and she had enough on her plate. You turned the corner and knocked into someone, stumbling back a bit. You looked up to see Allison. “Oh my God, I’m so sorry.” She said, straightening up.
"No worries.” You breathed out, throat closing up. Why, why did the world hate you? You gave her a tight smile and continued to move down the hallway until you were safely inside your advisors office. She smiled at you as you sat down in the chair nearest her desk. Max, one of the other History majors, shot you a smile from where he was sitting on a bean bag chair. You discussed your ideas for a final project for one of her classes, wanting to make sure you found all your research even thought the semester had just started. You wanted this project to go perfectly, it was your favorite time in history, which happened very little and you would be damned you didn’t do it well. You stayed to talk to her for a little bit longer, but eventually left as Max was leaving. Max was one of the sweetest boys in the department and the two of you were quite friendly. He’d been one of the saving graces of your summer and he’d been on the listening end of a many late night phone call about your problems. Kayla had even teased you that the two of you would be together in no time. You had laughed her off, because Max had a girlfriend (who was just as sweet as he was and was a good friend of yours as well) and because for as hard you tried, no one really compared to the way you felt about Luther. It sucked and you wanted nothing more than to move on with your life but you had never quite gotten closure and there was painful dull in your chest anytime you see him or his siblings on campus. Which just your luck, Diego, Luther, Vanya, and Allison were standing off the side of the doorway, and they went silent as you walked past. You kept your head down as you willed your feet to move quicker and Max gripped your arm as you stumbled out of the building. That was the closest you had come to them, besides your run-in with Allison just an hour prior, and you felt like you were going to throw up.
“You want to come over?” Max asked. You shook your head, blinking back tears. You needed to get over this. “I’ll let you play Mario Kart on the Switch.” Max offered and you were tempted to say yes, but you really should go back to your apartment to work on some homework. “C’mon, I’ll buy you McDonalds.” That was the key word. You laughed a little, looking up at him. “You deserve the world (Y/N/N), don’t ever forget it.” He said, slinging his arm around you as he walked to his car.
-
The Hargreeves sat around the apartment, laughing at some joke Klaus had made. Sophie and Charlotte had invited them over to see the new place and meet the new room mate and (Y/N) was at Max’s (who lived just down the hall). Sophie had promised she wouldn’t come back for at least a few hours, so it was the perfect time. “Mmm, I ran into (Y/N) today, like literally. Practically knocked the poor girl over.” Allison said as she ate a strawberry.
“Jeez Allison, tell us how you really feel.” Five joked.
“That was the most awkward thing ever when we saw her today.” Vanya said, to which Diego agreed.
“We need to talk about that.” Sophie said, shifting away from Klaus. “Her birthday is coming up and the situation is getting unbearable, so you guys need to make up and soon.”
“What, the five months of radio silence not enough for you?” Ben muttered and Sophie shot him a look. Diego opened his mouth to shoot something back when keys jingled in the door.
-
You walked through the door, sighing to yourself. You’d spent a good few hours at Max and Elena’s (who lived just just down the hall, conveniently) and it had been a good break from the drama of the real world. But you had homework to do. You walked into the entryway, seeing all the Hargreeves gathered in your kitchen along with your room mates. Kayla, ever the peacemaker, shot you a bright smile. “How was your day darling?” She asked as you eyes narrowed, surveying the room. You made brief eye contact with Luther and quickly looked away.
“I’m too sober to deal with this.” You huffed, turning around and leaving the apartment again.
-
The door shut behind her and Diego swiveled towards Sophie. “That really seems like she wants to make up with us.” He snarked, shooting her an ugly look. Sophie shot an equally ugly look back.
“Look, I don’t care what you say or how you do it. I just care that things stopping happening like this. Fix it.”
-
You trudged back down the hallway and opened the door to Max’s apartment. He turned to you, a teasing grin on his face. “Back so soon?” You crash-landed on his couch, face-first. He came over to the couch, propping his legs up against yours as he sat down. You twisted and sat up, legs still covered by his lanky ones.
“Every single one of them is in my apartment right now.” You huffed.
“The Hargreeves?” He asked, quirking an eyebrow.
“No, all of Santa’s elves. Yes, the Hargreeves.”
“Hey, I was just making sure I understood. Why are they there?” You shrugged.
“Beats me. And I’m too sober to deal with anything any of them have to say, so... here I am.”
“You’re always sober.”
“Exactly. I’ll will be dealing with that situation approximately... never.” He shook his head.
“Well, we need to talk about your birthday.” You groaned, flopping back down on the couch. “What are we doing?”
“How about nothing? Can we do nothing? Is nothing an appropriate answer?” He shot you a look.
“C’mon, our advisors want to do something for you.” The advisors in the department really liked you and tried to make the best of everyone’s birthday, so yours was no different. They’d just picked the wrong year. “How about like, a picnic or something? While the weather is still nice?”
“I don’t care. You decide and I’ll just show up.”
“That’s not how this works.”
“Well then, I want to do nothing.”
“We’re doing something.”
-
You squinted as you trudged towards the tables in the park near campus. The sun was out and the weather warm and your friends had gone a long way to give you the best birthday. The day had been good so far with Kayla bringing you coffee this morning and Elena taking you out to lunch. A picnic in the park with a larger group of your friends and movie night in Max and Elena’s apartment later that night with your core group was the plan for the rest of the day. For as much as you had dreaded it, you couldn’t deny how good it felt to be appreciated by the people around you and it made your heart feel full. You cherished the hugs and laughs as the afternoon wore on, and every minute felt so full of joy until... until you saw the Hargreeves minus Luther but plus Lila walking towards the group. Sophie and Charlotte made their way over to the group, along with Elena, who knew Allison through the theatre department. You rolled your eyes, turning to Max. “You have to be fucking kidding me.” You said, shaking your head. You turned to walk away from them and were suddenly faced with Five. You jumped. “Jesus Christ. Weren’t you just...” You asked, turning back to where his siblings were and you were sure you had just seen him there too. “Never mind.” He sighed, sticking his hand out, present in his grasp.
“Happy birthday.” You stared at the present dumbfounded and he shook it. “Take it. I’m not going to stand here forever.” You tentatively took it from him.
“Thanks.. I think?” A teasing smirk settled on his face as he shoved his hands back in his pockets. The smirk was quickly replaced by a serious look though.
“Look, I’m sorry things happened the way they did. Don’t tell my siblings I said this, but not having you around has kinda sucked. I wish there was something we could do to fix it, but as much as your room mates want to pretend otherwise, this is between you and Luther.”
“Thank you.” You said sincerely. “Why are you guys here though?” Five sighed.
“Your room mates, well Sophie, think if we’re around long enough you’ll just like us again. But like I just said this is-”
“Between me and Luther, yeah.” You sucked in a deep breath and you could feel Max’s weary glance at you. “Well, thanks for this,” You said, shaking the present in your hand. “And thanks for coming. Help yourself to the food.” You gestured to the table and quickly turned away. Losing your friendship with the Hargreeves had been one of the worst parts of the whole situation and you were truly starting to wonder if you had been wrong from the beginning about them. You shook your head to clear that thought. No, no they were still the bad people you knew them to be. Sure, Five was his own entity and made his own choices separate of his siblings. But the others had set you up to be one big joke and you would not tolerate people like that nor let them back into your life. They were all like Luther, who wasn’t even present, cowards.
-
You sat in Max’s apartment that night as the rain pattered down. You guys had gotten one of the last summer rainstorms for the year that night and your whole world felt at peace. You’d been able to have a really good conversation with Ben and Vanya earlier, and while it didn’t change anything, the look Charlotte gave you was enough to ease just a little bit of the pain. Luther had still been a no-show, which was probably for the best. You weren’t sure how you would’ve reacted and you weren’t sure what might’ve come out of Max’s mouth. Your phone dinged and you looked down. Speak of the devil, you thought to yourself.
Hey, are you home? I have a birthday present for you.
You sighed as the phone dinged again.
I want to talk to you.
You could never say no to him and maybe... maybe just maybe this would give you the closure you needed to move on with your life.
Give me five minutes.
You pulled on your shoes. “Hey, someone is here to drop off a present for me. I’ll be back in like five, ten maybe?” You said, standing by the door. Max gave you a thumbs up and you disappeared out the door. You took a deep breath as your feet pounded down the stairs, anxious to get this over with. You opened the door to your building, warm water cascading down as you hurried over to Luther’s truck. You opened the passenger door and slid in, desperate to get out of the rain. He turned to look at you, giving you a soft smile. Your heart ached. He wordlessly handed you neatly wrapped gift. You took an unsure look at him and he nodded, encouraging you to open it. You tentatively and carefully unwrapped the gift, a book sliding out. It was an original copy of your favorite book, and you looked up at him, a warmth spreading over you. “Luther, how- we talked about this, what, maybe once?” He shrugged as you bit your lip. He shifted in his seat and you looked back to him.
“(Y/N), I’m really sorry about all of this.”
“Luther-”
“I just want things to go back to the way they used to be. Where we were friends and my favorite part of my day was getting to see you smile.” You closed your eyes, heart warring over disappointment and forgiveness. You were disappointed it had taken this long to hear him say those words, over the way you knew things could never go back to the way they used to be, but your heart felt forgiveness towards him all the same. You opened your eyes and you realized you were much closer to Luther than you had originally realized. “I really want to kiss you.” He whispered. You closed your eyes, and connected the distance, throwing everything to the wind, to just know what this feeling was like one time. The book slid off your lap, thudding to the floor of the car, and you pulled away abruptly. Why had you done that? Now you were only going to be able to think of the taste of his lips on yours as your heart continued to break over the fact that you could never have him.
“I’m sorry Luther, really, I- I can’t.” You whispered, grabbing the book off the floor of the car. He looked at you in hurt and the look was enough to make you run, slamming the car door behind you. The rain seemed to come down harder as you rushed back inside, willing yourself not to cry. He had hurt you, and no kiss could change that. You could forgive him, but you could never forget.
-
You could hear the noise from down the hallway, which only made your feet move faster in giddy excitement. A bunch of you were getting together to have dinner at Max and Elena’s, and even though Allison and Diego (and probably Lila if you were being honest, because the girl didn’t go anywhere without Diego) were going to be there, it couldn’t diminish your excitement for the night. You let yourself into the apartment you were a constant visitor of, and the boys cheered as you kicked off your shoes. There were a few graduated students here and one, Dean, had just gotten back from a few months in Italy and he wrapped you in a hug. You were surprised, you hadn’t expected to see the boy for at least another few weeks. He squished your face as you turned, surveying who else was there. As to be expected, Allison was seated next to Elena and Diego and Lila were in the living room with a few of Max’s friends. You made your way over to the couch, sitting down as the boys played Mario Kart.
“So, (Y/N), any new romantic prospects on the horizon?” Reyna, a senior theatre major, asked you. You shook your head.
“That’s not what I heard.” Dean said, taking a sip of his drink. Everyone turned to look at him, but he turned to Max, a smirk on his face. “She kissed Luther.” You shot up from where you were laying on the couch as everyone turned their attention back to you.
“I’m never telling you anything ever again.” You said seriously, but his grin was light and teasing and you don’t think he even really knew what he had just done.
“You kissed Luther?” Max questioned but Allison broke into a shit-eating grin.
“Alright, finally! Took you like eight months longer than I had expected though.” She said.
“No, no. Yes, I kissed him, but it wasn’t like that. It was a mistake and it’s never happening again.”
“When?” Max asked, voice grave.
“My birthday.” Max sighed, turning his back to you.
“So.. you kissed Luther. That should change everything.” Diego stated.
“It doesn’t change the fact that you guys fucked me over.”
“What did we do to make you hate us so much?” Lila asked.
“I was just some sick joke to you guys, you played with my feelings and left me humiliated, and I refuse to be the butt of everyone’s jokes. I was in high school and I refuse to be the same here, especially not to you people.”
“What are you talking about?” Diego questioned, eyebrows furrowed. You sighed.
“I’m not explaining it to you. You can’t even be bothered to own up to it.” you huffed, pushing yourself up from the couch. You pushed past Dean and Reyna, making your way out of the apartment, and down the hall. So much for a fun night.
-
The door slammed behind her. Diego swiveled towards her friends, utterly confused. Why hadn’t Luther told anyone he had kissed her? “Okay, what just happened?” Allison questioned. Max sighed.
“She has it in her head that this is some sort of elaborate prank to humiliate her for liking Luther.” Elena explained.
“That’s ridiculous, we’d never do something like that.” Allison defended. Max sighed, yet again.
“Look, this is something you may not know about her, but you have to understand. While she was in high school, and throughout her freshman year, she was the butt of everyone’s jokes, constantly being played and left out. It wasn’t even until she became friends with us that she got a taste of what real friendship is like. So, for you guys, the most popular people on campus to actually like her? It’s foreign and she doesn’t know how to handle that.”
“But Luther wouldn’t hurt her like that. He really liked her, still does.” Diego defended. She should know Luther better than that. Max shrugged.
“I said that too. She told me this story, how in middle school, boys would come up to her as a joke, to ask her out to embarrass her and run away laughing when she’d say yes. I think it left a memory that no one would ever really like her, so for Luther to like her, her first thought is that it was some twisted prank rather than him actually liking her.” There was pause. “As much as she wants to pretend that this doesn’t change anything, it changes everything. And I really hope she figures it out because I’ve never seen her as happy then when she was with him.”
-
You sighed as you locked the door to the Writing Center. It was late at night and you were dreading the walk back to your apartment. You and Sophie were originally supposed to work this shift together but she had changed her mind at the last minute, not wanting to be on campus so late. It was fine, really, but it left you without another tutor and without a ride back to the apartment. “Hey, are you just heading you out?” You heard from behind you and you turned to see Luther. You nodded, not trusting your voice. “Can I give you a ride?” You shook your head.
“It’s fine Luther, really.”
“Please? It would make me feel better knowing you got home safely.” You wanted to make a snarky remark about not doing things for him but you couldn’t bring yourself as you looked at him. You knew that as much as you didn’t want to sit in a car with him, you didn’t want to walk home this late at night more. It also meant a lot that even after everything, he still cared so much about your safety. You nodded, readjusting the straps of your bag on your shoulders. He cracked a soft smile and the two of you walked out in silence to his car. He opened your door for you and you slid in, dropping your bag to the ground. He walked around the back and got in, starting the car. The ride back to your apartment was silent and awkward and you felt a wave of relief roll over you as you saw your apartment building come within sight. Luther parked the car, but you made no move to get out. He had turned the car off completely and you had a feeling there was something he wanted to say. The silence continued until you felt forced to say something.
“Luther, I’m sorry, I really am.” He looked at you.
“Why’d you kiss me?” You sighed, shrugging, as you pulled the sleeves of your sweatshirt around your hands.
“I wanted to know what it was like.” You said softly.
“I just... still don’t understand what happened that day. I mean, I really liked you, I still do, and I thought that you liked me back. But then you freaked out, and I still don’t understand it.” He said, never once taking his eyes off of you.
“I was, I am in love with you, and all I ever was to you was some sick joke for laughs. I couldn’t do it.”
“You think you were joke? (Y/N), I am just as equally in love with you, and I would never hurt you like that.”
“Why? Why are you in love with me? What could I possibly have to offer you that every other girl on campus who pines after you doesn’t have? I’m certainly not as pretty or as smart as some of the girls you hang out with.”
“Because you’re you! Because when I’m having a bad day, I can just talk to you and it seems like all my problems fade away. Because you’re so incredibly smart and passionate and you aren’t afraid to pursue your dreams. Because you get along with my siblings, because I can get lost in your eyes! There’s not another girl on campus who looks at me for me and not for my name.” By this point, you were in tears as you had a horrible sinking feeling that you had royally fucked up. This whole time, you had thought it was a prank meant to hurt you when you had been the one to cause all the hurt. All this... for what? “And I thought after that day that you kissed me, that things might get better, but we still aren’t talking to each other but I just want my friend back, in any way I can have her.” Your head rested in your hands, unsure of what to do or what to say. You were still crazy in love with boy, and he you.
“Where do we go from here?” You whispered, looking up at him from your hands.
“Well, you have two options. You walk back inside your apartment and don’t look back, and we let the other go. Or you sit here and we talk about everything that needs to be talked about.”
“I mean, how do we even fix this Luther?”
“We start over. Start from a place of trust and communication. Tell me the truth about the last six months.”
“You want the truth? I am in love with you and it scares the hell out of me, because I’m so used to everyone leaving me or using me for their own gain. And I was so scared you would be like everyone else that I left before you could hurt me anymore, convincing myself this was some elaborate lie to hurt me. But the last six months have been hell and there were nights where I wanted nothing more than to seek you out because I felt so alone.” Your voice broke on the last word and you weren’t sure how much more of this you could take.
“I would’ve been there, you know. If you had asked.” You nodded.
“I’m sorry Luther.” You whispered, and he put his hand on your knee.
“I’m sorry I never reached out earlier. I should’ve, because you were clearly not okay.” You shrugged, wiping your tears.
“I kinda deserved it.”
“Hey, I could’ve at least fought for the girl I’m in love with. I just let you walk out of my life.” You took a sharp breath because you weren’t quite sure you’d ever get used to hearing him refer to you as the girl he was in love with. You looked up at him and he inched closer. “I’m going to kiss you again, if that’s okay with you, but you have to promise not to run away again.”
You nodded. “I promise I’m not going anywhere as long as you want me here.” He kissed you again, and it was so wonderfully different from the last time, because you were both trying to communicate everything you weren’t sure how to say, and because you weren’t sure this would be the last time you’d kiss him. He pulled away, but the two of you remained quite close, feeling his lips mumble his next words against yours.
“Five owes Kayla so much money.” You laughed, cupping his face. He smiled at you.
“Hey, can I kiss you again?” He nodded, and you placed a short, but sweet kiss on his lips. He held you close though.
“Hey, what are you doing on Saturday?” You shrugged.
“Nothing.”
“You want to go on a date?” You nodded, smiling giddily. A pause. “Hey, we can’t hang out on Saturday. I’m taking a really pretty girl on a date.” You snorted.
“Oh yeah?” He nodded, a stupid grin on his face.
“Yeah, I’m really nervous.”
“Well, you should give me a kiss for good luck then. The date has to go well, obviously.” He smirked and kissed your lips again. You reveled in the feeling as he pulled away. You let his thumb rub soft circles on your cheek as you looked at him. Your phone dinged, and you sighed. It was Sophie, asking if you’d be home soon. “I should probably get inside, it’s getting late.” He nodded, looking slightly disappointed. “Can I have a goodnight kiss?” He nodded, pressing a brief kiss to your lips. “I never want to stop doing that.” He smiled. “I’ll text you in the morning, okay?” He nodded again.
“Sleep well.” He said as you opened the door, grabbing your bag from the floor. You slung it over your shoulder as you stood by the door.
“Night Luther. Love you.”
Being able to say the words freely put a smile on your face, which only grew when he responded with a “Love you too.” You shut the door, waving to him as you headed inside your apartment building. For the first time in months, you could go to sleep feeling the happiest you had in years. For the first time, everything was going just right, even if had taken a couple months longer and left turns to get there.

For You? Always.
Chapter Five
Summary: Your best friend, Sadie, finally arrives. When she arrives, you introduce her to Ben.
W/C: 2.9k
<<Previous, Next>>
Now that you were going to introduce Ben to Sadie, you had to tell her about him first. Since she was also a busy person, the conversation was short.
So, you gave her a small catch-up text after she told you to save the, “juicy details,” for when she got there. Those words only made you laugh, filling you with your usual anticipation of seeing her.
As the week went by, you and Ben had only been able to go to dinner one night, and spent any other time together at work.
He had been wrapped up in work with Siara, leading to late nights and not being able to get much free time.
Ben assured you, though, that he was free for the weekend. Siara confirmed the statement. This weekend was going to be one to remember.
Finally, it was Friday. Sadie said that she would meet you at your office when she arrived despite your insistence to meet her at the airport.
Having little work, you waited for her with ever growing excitement. Time seemed to drag on as you waited.
“Do I smell smoke, or is that just this hotness I see,” Sadie said, standing in your office doorway.
Jumping up, you rushed over to give her a hug, basically barreling her over. The two of you hadn’t seen each other in months when you usually saw each other at least once a month.
“I’m so happy that you’re finally here. I have so much to tell you.” you told her.
“Well, before that, let's go say hi to Siara. Also, hi Paisley,” she said as Paisley walked by.
Returning the greeting, Paisley continued on as she still had work to finish. She denied any offer of yours to help.
Going down to see Siara, you were also excited to see Ben. He hadn’t been able to find anything to make his way to you today, and you couldn’t find one to go to him. Well, you couldn't find an 'acceptable' reason.
Knowing that this would be the first time Sadie met him as well brought you into a tizzy. The wanting her to meet him, but the fear that she might not like him, filled you.
Heading towards Siara’s office, you saw Ben walk in as he looked down at a stack of papers in his hands.
Following behind him, you saw that the familiar cluster on the desk had been greatly reduced to a few files spread out. This was a shocking sight, as Siara and Jason always had piles of paper and folders over the table.
Seeing Ben look thoughtfully at the papers and conferring with Siara made you admire him more than you already did. The care and determination in his work made him seem so much more enchanting.
“Well, well, well, if it ain’t little Sisi acting all grown up,” Sadie said jokingly. Siara’s eyes went wide followed by a large grin.
Unlike you, Siara hadn’t seen Sadie in over a year. Every time Sadie had been in town, Siara was bogged down in work. So, it was understandable when you heard an almost shriek of excitement as she bolted up.
Making your way over to a now standing Ben, you watched the ferocity of Siara’s hug with Sadie.
Leaning closer to Ben, you told him, “She doesn’t get to see her as often as I do.” A wave of understanding flooded his face.
For a few minutes, you two watched the reunited friends as they complimented each other’s looks and caught up on a few quick stories.
While they did this, you almost leaned against Ben. As you enjoyed his warmth, you felt his hand take yours. You smiled but kept your eyes on the other two in the room.
You waited until they were done to introduce him, all while reluctantly letting his hand go.
“Ben, this is Sadie, and Sadie this is Ben.”
He stuck out his hand for a greeting, but Sadie didn’t take it. Instead, she pulled him into a hug.
“Sorry, Ben. I should have warned you that she’s a hugger,” you said as you chuckled at his surprised reaction, Siara also laughing.
Giving a small smirk as Sadie pulled away, Ben replied, “It’s alright. It’s nice to finally be able to properly meet you. It's a pleasure.”
“Oh don’t be so formal.”
Then, she noticed something else he said.
"Properly meet me?"
"Oh, yeah, I forgot to tell you that he used to go to high school with us," you told her.
"If I remember correctly, we didn't ever have a class together. That, and I wasn't overly noticeable."
He shyly rubbed the back of his neck as you said, "Oh, Ben, you weren't unnoticeable. I noticed you."
A small smile formed on his lips. One that you enjoyed seeing. For someone so successful and talented as him, you were tickled whenever he showed how humble and shy he was.
You didn't realise the two of you were looking at the other for too long until Sadie or Siara cleared their throat.
He looked over at you with his look of overwhelmed kindness, triggered from the moments before, earning a slight laugh.
Sadie saw this and noticed a bit more in his eyes when he looked at you. Especially in that one small moment. The look disappeared after he looked at her or Siara.
Making a mental note of it, she continued, “So, are you joining us tonight?”
“Joining you doing what?” Ben’s look changed to one of confusion.
“Only going to the finest place in town," she paused for effect, "McDonald’s.” Seeing his look of surprise earned a laugh from all except him.
“Believe it or not, it’s been a tradition,” you chimed in. “Every time either of us arrives at the other’s, we head to the closest McDonald’s there is for dinner,” you continued stepping up beside him, letting your arm timidly graze his. “I’m sorry. I didn’t think to ask if you’d like to come tonight. Would you like to?”
Ben looked at you with soft eyes, procuring a smile from you as he nodded and said, “Only if you want me to.”
You did. You really wanted him to, even if it was for something like that. The only response you gave was the only response he needed, an affectionate smile.
For a moment, again, you were lost in his eyes. Being broken out of the moment, Sadie grabbed your attention by slightly pulling your sleeve.
“It’s about that time too, and I still have to drop off my bag,” Sadie said with a slightly impatient tone.
You looked to Siara to make sure it was okay to take Ben, and she nodded.
Grabbing his hand, you pulled him with you for a few steps before letting go to let him walk on his own.
As he stepped up beside you, he took your hand back in his while you walked together. At this, you looked to him and smiled. Sadie made that as another mental note.
On the walk over to your house, Sadie told you everything that had been happening in her world. There was so much that you could hardly keep up with the words.
This is why the two of you need to see each other so often. So that you can actually understand what she's saying.
Getting to your house, you pass her the key so that she could quickly run her things in.
Waiting, you leaned your head against Ben’s shoulder and he laid a slightly lingering kiss on the top of your head. The gentleness of it warmed you.
What you didn’t know was that Sadie saw it happen. She went quick in hopes that she would see something. All she wanted was the best for you, and she knew you wanted to hear her opinion even if you hadn’t said it directly. This trip was going to fill with mental notes for her, and so far, none were negative. Not for your sake, anyways.
Finally Sadie walked out, urging you to follow her to get on with the tradition.
As you made your way to the usual McDonald’s you went to, Sadie kept up the fast storytelling. You looked up at Ben to find him just as lost in the information as you were, his overwhelmed expression slightly showing again.
“Hey, we’re going to go for a few drinks tomorrow. You should come, Ben,” Sadie suddenly said, cutting off her own story.
Feeling a bit frustrated because you were going to ask him, you looked at Ben with expectant eyes. Masking his dazed look with a smile, he agreed to come.
When Sadie turned back around, Ben leaned over to quietly say, “I haven’t been to a lot of bars. And when I have they’ve been empty except me and my colleagues. I don't know what to expect.”
You were slightly shocked, but you also weren’t that surprised. His personality was not one that you would place in a setting like that.
Bringing your other arm up to squeeze his for comfort, you told him what to expect. The bar you were going to was one that locals only really knew about anyway. That meant it would only really be the three of you talking in a relatively calm scene with not too many others, even on a Saturday.
Reaching the McDonald’s, the three of you ordered and Sadie gave no other option other than her paying.
Her talking of what’s happened in the last while had finally slowed down after you got your food and sat down at a table. Sitting beside Ben and across from Sadie in the booth seats, you were finally able to fill Sadie in on your time, which was significantly less exciting.
“That’s it?” Sadie said, astonished. “What about what you and Ben have been up to?”
You froze, not knowing what to say, but Ben helped that. He gave Sadie the details from his first day to the dinner at the beginning of the week. One thing you were slightly thankful for was that he left out some of the more intimate details. You wanted to leave that to a private moment with her.
Though you’ve been together for about a week, it’s felt like you’ve been with him since the day you properly met a month ago. From how Ben even told it, he seemed to feel the same way.
Both of you looked into each other’s eyes as he finished the story, feeling happy in the moment.
Breaking the moment, Sadie started to joke about how the two of you were 'lovey dovey'.
Rolling your eyes, you got up to wash your hands from the oil and salt. Sadie took this as an opportunity to have a quick one on one with Ben.
“So, what are your intentions with my girl? Because if you break her heart, you will feel my wrath.” Ben felt a bit stunned at the suddenness of Sadie’s words.
She waited patiently as he took a moment to find the words.
“I want a life with her," he started. "We may have only properly been together for a week, but it's felt like it started last month when I first got here."
He paused for a moment. The words he was saying were true. What he was about to say would possibly surprise Sadie.
"Ever since I met her in high school, she has been amazing. Y/N was one of the few people that made me feel happy in those days. After finally properly meeting her, I felt even more drawn in. Every time she looks at me, I get lost in her eyes. Even in this month, I can’t picture a life without being by her side.”
Sadie listened to every word carefully, finding nothing that she thought would be a lie. The tone in his voice, the look in his eyes, he adored you. She gave him a smile.
“Then,” she began, “you deserve her. Most importantly, she deserves you.”
Ben rejoiced at the words, a grin growing on his face as you walked back.
Sadie quickly said, “All I ask is that you trust in her no matter what,” before you came into earshot.
“Good to see she didn’t chase you off,” you said jokingly. They both laughed as you sat back down. Ben seemed happy before, but he seemed even more so now as you looked at him. His eyes seemed to glimmer more than they usually had.
After that, Sadie encouraged Ben to tell her some things about himself.
This filled about an hour of time as she kept asking him questions about certain details. You knew she was mainly doing that to see if it would annoy him, but at the same time she did show interest.
Not a single moment had a sign of annoyance, but a joy that he could tell these stories once again. In Sadie’s book, he had passed that test.
Once she felt content, Sadie made the suggestion of leaving. Doing so, you had once again taken Ben’s hand in yours. This time you had leaned in closer to him, taking in the comfort of his warmth.
Like she had on the way to McDonald’s, the way back was filled with her talking, but this time about stories with you.
Smiling and laughing when needed, you and Ben didn’t pay as much attention to the stories as you did to each other. With you pulling his arm closer, eventually wrapping both of your arms around his one, with your fingers interlaced with his, and him kissing the top of your head every once in a while as it rested against his shoulder.
Moments like this have been increasing recently and you relished them.
The only positive of the seemingly quicker walk home was that Sadie was able to slow down her story telling. Yet, you wished it was longer so that you could stay with Ben for a little longer. Usually you’d create a reason to stay with him longer, but Sadie was here and you wanted to help him feel relief from the constant energy she gave off. You’d see him tomorrow.
“Well, when should I meet you tomorrow?” Ben asked.
“Meet us here around seven. Just a warning, one of us may not be ready,” you said this pretending to block your mouth and pointed at Sadie.
“Hey! At least I look good.” The three of you laughed, yours and Ben’s ending in a slight sigh.
As you all said your goodbyes, Ben gave you a warm smile. Seeing it brought a pleasant warmth flowing through you. Then, as you watched him walk away, a feeling of loneliness crept up. A wanting for him to be nearby.
With Ben rounding the corner, you hadn’t realized how long it had been as you watched him leave. Embarrassment ran through you when you turned back towards Sadie. She only had a knowing smile that didn’t help ease the feeling.
Urging you to come inside, she said she had something to tell you. Perplexed, you followed.
Your embarrassment started to fade as you tried to convince yourself that doing what you did was normal. Doubting it, though, only helped it creep back in.
Making herself comfortable on the couch, Sadie waited for you to sit, well, anywhere. Though you were nervous as to what she’d say, you sat next to her on the couch. Doing this made you feel slightly uncomfortable. Almost as if you were about to get the talk from your parents. Slightly because of that feeling, you didn’t want to make eye contact with Sadie in fear it would make it even more awkward.
Finally working up courage to meet her gaze, she said, “Don’t worry, I’m not going to say anything bad.” Relaxing your shoulders in solace, Sadie chuckled and gave you a moment before she continued. “I have never seen you this happy about someone in a long time. I have also never seen anybody so eager to be with you. Not even you know who.”
Knowing that your ex was a sensitive topic, it was an unspoken rule to never say his name. What she said about Ben had also made you feel elated.
Sadie continued, “Even from this one day, the way he just looks at you compared to everybody else, well, is pure adoration.” A smile started to form on your face. “Don’t get too hopeful yet. We still have tomorrow to get through which may hold the ultimate test.”
Confusion settled in at those words. “What do you mean by that?”
“I only said that it may happen. Also, I’m not telling you otherwise it would spoil the surprise.” A playful lilt was in her voice, but the thought brought a slight sense of fear to you. All you could think was that she planned something.
Even though she would say she would never, she would and she has. Not for something like this, but you couldn’t help but think she would.

Series Masterlist   Previous Part    Next Part
I had my suspicions about Peter being Spiderman, I mean it was kinda obvious he’s always leaving decathlon meetings according to MJ. They both have the same annoying ass optimism. No one is just that sure of anything. Like ever. Thanks to Liz I’d finally know.
I entered the house having to maneuver past a couple of people standing in the hall past the front door. This party was tame compared to others I’d been to. Flash was DJ-ing he’s so annoying. Liz was cool though she was nice.
I found MJ standing in the kitchen opening a pack of bread holding a jar of peanut butter. When I walked over and said
“Only you would come to a party to just eat bread.”
She only replied with a short “Whatever loser,”
“Hey, Peter Parker. Where’s your friend Spiderman?” Flash announced on the mic.
“Lemme guess with your imaginary girlfriend?”
Peter just stood there stunned
“That’s not Spiderman that’s just Ned in a red shirt,” Okay that one would’ve been kinda funny if he didn’t add that annoying horn sound.
“Shut the fuck up!” I said before smiling at Peter and walking off. I didn't do it for him, necessarily Flash was just annoying. Like I’ve never understood how someone with the grandpa name Eugene could talk so much shit.
 I was making small talk with some random senior boy when I heard a high pitched squeal and excused myself to the bathroom. The sound only got louder and louder and louder. It was so painful it felt like Athena should’ve split my forehead and climbed her way out. My vision blurring together made me not able to grab onto anything as I lost balance. I wasn't going to cry,
I wasn't. I couldn’t crying’s pathetic I wasn't going to cry. I could push through the pain. I’ve done it before, that's what I always do. Just when it got so intense I was sure I was gonna pass out it stopped. I did not pass out however I did throw up into the toilet. I looked in the mirror after washing my face off and for a second I could’ve sworn my eyes were glowing. Great now I’m going into a psychotic break why would my eyes be glowing.
I just need some fresh air. Yeah that’s all. I sat there for a while letting my mind wander until I heard MJ’s voice from behind me.
“So this is where you were? I’ve been looking for you everywhere,” She said as she sat down next to me. When I didn’t respond she turned facing me waving her hands my face
“You good?”
I looked up from picking at the grass.
“I’m just tired MJ,” I mean I have every right to be tired there’s a whole fucking gang war going down where I live. Which makes no fucking sense why are people fighting over streets that no one actually owns. The weapons Vulture is selling make me good money, but they’re getting way too close to where my friends lived. I was snapped out of diving into all my problems by a purple cloud in the distance. Hearing the distant squeal slash siren hybrid. I felt my eyes widen.
“What was that?” MJ asked.
Fucking Vulture
ARE YOU KIDDING ME. I told him to stay out of my neighborhood and he came to my friends.
“I don’t know,” I said “Let’s just go back inside,”
As we were walking back to the backdoors I took one glance behind me, and there he was Spiderman heading towards the cloud
“Hey,” I called out walking closer to Ned, “Ned!”
He turned around
“Who me?” He pointed to himself.
“I mean I don’t see any other Neds around were,” I joked
“Oh, it’s you just usually don’t talk to me,” He pointed out.
“Yeah sorry about that,” I said “Actually where’s Peter? I can’t seem to find him,”
“Oh he uh,” he scratched the back of his neck “He had to go,”
“Aw, how unfortunate,” I patted his shoulder “Well enjoy the party I have to go too,” So Ned knew Peter was Spiderman.
“Can I get a ride?” I asked MJ to which she just said
“You don’t have to ask,”
 “Just drop me off at the corner store by my house,”
It never felt awkward around MJ. Normally I had to be on high alert around everyone, but it’s never like that with her. This isn't an “honor” many people have but she’s one of the few I feel comfortable falling asleep around. I knew being in the car would make me feel sick so I drifted off.
Shutting the door to the car we said our goodbyes and I headed into the gas station when Mr. William greeted me. I felt a warm feeling in my body. It was nice but short lived and replaced by an emptiness that humans like to call nostalgia. I missed feeling “home” I still lived here. I don’t know why It seems like I don't. I guess it was the fact I’d been giving more attention to Queens and Thorn lately. I know it’s not the projects anymore which I am immensely grateful for but it’s the same neighborhood. According to Briana, one of the like 3 friends I managed to keep I “never come around anymore” or “I’m too good for them”.
I made my way to the bathroom and located the tile I kept my burner phone in. I used to keep it in a shoe box at home until my sister started going through the phase where she feels the need to borrow all my clothes. Stomping on the edge of the tile it flipped up and I grabbed the phone and shoved it in the pocket of my hoodie.
Getting a soda and some gummy worms before I left. I started to walk back to my apartment complex. I went up to sit on the roof of the building just eating my gummies looking. That was something I did a lot just look. When I was younger I couldn’t stand being alone in my own head, but the older I got the more I began to understand why old people would just sit out on their porch doing nothing but looking.
When I checked my phone it was 12:47 and I decided it was time to go back in. First I sent out a message on the burner phone to what I hope to God was the right number.
I headed back down to my room and spent the whole night tossing and turning. When I put on a podcast I slept much easier. I found that the environment I grew up in bred me to not be able to sleep probably without some sort of noise even if it’s just arguing.
I woke up with my phone on my face and my bonnet halfway across the continent. I checked my phone fully expecting to be late but by some blessing I had at least two hours to get ready before I had to leave. The house was quiet like eerily quiet no TV on or anything. I went to wake up the drama queen, middle child, Aaliyah. When I say drama queen I mean both acting and just straight up being dramatic. And then there’s Sapphire who’s the physical embodiment of a Gemini. I flicked on the lights, revealing toys scattered all over Sapphire‘s side of the room. The only response I got was from Aaliyah who simply whined and pulled her blanket over her head. I picked up a pair of rolled up socks and tossed them at her to which she loudly exclaimed
“Ow!”
See what I mean by dramatic but thankfully for me, she woke up Sapphire meaning I didn’t have to step on sharp plastic trying to navigate her side. Not that I could judge her though I can’t remember the last time I had the motivation to clean my room.
I was fully expecting my dad to be passed out on the couch when I walked into the living room but he wasn’t. He wasn’t in his room either. This was nothing out of the ordinary though, he’d probably be back tonight or tomorrow.
One of the perks of my dad being gone was I could use the bathroom in his room to shower and take as long as I want. Another perk of dad not being here is I can take his car today instead of my skateboard. My sisters don't go to a local school but it’s still way closer to our home then Midtown so they don’t have to go so far away. I,on the other hand, have to skate to the bus stop, get on the metro then get on a subway and skate the rest of the way to school.
“Y’all wanna get something to eat?” I asked my sisters once we were in the car.
“Wendys!” Sapphire interjected from the backseat
“No one wants to eat Wendys,” Aaliyah turned around from the passenger to face her. “Get McDonald’s” she demanded, turning back to face me.
“Oh so you don’t want Wendys but you can eat the plastic from McDonald's,” Sapphire asked accusingly.
“Wendy's tastes like shit,”
“You taste like shit,”
“That doesn’t even make any sense!”
I just giggled at the fact this is what they decided to argue about.
“I’m just gonna get somethin’ from Mr. Washington, Since it’s the closest thing to us” was all I said before turning the radio up.
I pulled into the parking lot. Looking at the buildings that look like they should be dead. With their bulletproof windows with anti robbery bars. It’s honestly depressing if you think about it for too long. But these places are nothing but living and bustling no matter what. Like the roses in the cracks of the sidewalk. I left the keys in the ignition once my sister confirmed they weren’t coming inside.
“Hey Y/N,” Mr.Washington’s son said from the kitchen. I believe he’s 18 now?
“Hey,” I nodded my head at him walking towards his father to order.
“Hey, Y/N how are you doing?”
“I’m good how are you?”
“I’m good thanks for asking, you know you look more and more like your mom everyday,” he pointed out and I just smiled. “She was a great kid,”
“Yeah…” I trailed off.
“So the usual?” he asked and I nodded.
I don’t know how but he remembered everyone’s usual orders and knows everyone’s names.
Quick rule of thumb the best food comes in brown paper bags.
Once I was back in the car I had to make the conscious effort not to speed. MJ never goes anywhere when I drive because I “drive like I have nothing to live for” which personally I just think she’s dramatic.
Honestly my sisters are so lucky they go to a local school. I mean yeah the education at Midtown is better than the local highschool, but it’s not like I even belong there. So basically I commute almost 40 minutes everyday to a school I’m not smart enough to go to.
By the time lunch came around I had a terrible headache the smell of my food made me vomit. And no I’m not being dramatic I really had to stop by the bathroom and throw up.
Now I didn’t really feel like walking all the way over to sit at my usual table so I just sat with the school stoners. Yes cliques are real and if this were a movie I’d be one of those clique surfers. Pretty much everyone is a clique surfer if we’re being honest.
I don’t know why they get such a bad wrap stoners have got to be some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Like this one girl Jessica she gave me one of my first tattoos for free in freshman year when I met her. Since she noticed that I looked stressed, she offered to let me hit her cart. I didn’t even have to ask her
Oh my god I’ll marry you were my exact thoughts at that moment. That I’d apparently voiced out loud because she responded with.
“I’m down. When’s the wedding?”
Her and two guys who were sitting at the table with us made their way to the boys bathroom with me.
 After about 3 hits I could feel the life returning to my body as if the rain finally stopped crashing down and the rainbow entered the sky. I could've sworn I heard God say “I’ll never flood the earth again”
“Do you think I’d look good with a nostril piercing?” I asked while examining my nose in the mirror.
“Are you kidding me? You’d look hot as fuck,” Jessica added in.
“You should pierce her nose, J” the guy who was standing closest to the door said. Zach I think.
“Yeah I could do that, do you want me to?” She asked.
I pondered it for a second before the boy who already looked off of cloud nine Tyler I believe his name was interjected with
“She’s really good at it, she did my girlfriends,”
You know what? Fuck it
“Why the hell not,” I said
“Alright,” she said after clapping her hands and walking over to her backpack on the floor. She pulled out a lighter and an earring. She lit the earring to disinfect and I hopped up on the sink and she moved towards the right side of my body. Just as she was asking me where exactly I wanted it we all jumped at the sound of the door creaking open.
Low and behold Peter Parker of all people walked in.
“Uh I was just gonna...yeah,” He stammered out still standing by the door. He was still just staring at me. Now I’m not sure if it was because I was a girl in the boys bathroom, if I looked high, or if it was the fact I was about to pierce my nose in a dirty school bathroom but he was starting to make me feel awkward.
“Can I help you?” I asked.
“Oh,” he said as a blush raised up his cheeks “I’m just gonna,” he pointed to one of the stalls before scurrying into it.
Jessica simply chuckled and called him cute.
By the time he came back out to wash his hands the earring was already pushed into my nostril with a slight pinch. Jessica told me that I’d have to clean the piercing everyday for a couple weeks, which is something I could manage. I hopped down the sink and asked
“Do I look okay?” Referring to my eyes
“Yeah and me?” Jessica asked
“Yeah you’re good,” I reassured her. That was the last thing she needed to hear before her and the other two guys left the bathroom.
As Peter was washing his hands I turned back around to look at my nose in the mirror. It was still a little red with irritation. It was also slightly sore to the touch. I was shaken out of my thoughts by Peter’s voice.
“Did that hurt?” He asked.
He was so adorable.
“This?” I pointed to my nose and he nodded.
“No not really,” I said grabbing my bag off the floor.
“Well this very short convo has been a blast but I gotta go,”
Okay so, I hadn’t been to the class in like forever because of the sheer fear of what would happen cause I skipped it so much. However, my fear of having to confront Olivia is stronger and she was coming towards me so, I ran in through the door. Ugh I’m such a pussy. I saw her walk out of my view. I was gonna turn back out and leave but ,unfortunately I had already locked eyes with the teacher. Looking around at all the students staring at me I just looked back at the teacher.
“Y/N! So nice of you to finally join us,” Ms Warren just had to announce. I simply choose to give a curt nod before she said
“We’re doing a partnered assignment, you can sit by Peter,” She said while pointing near the back of the classroom.
I made my way to the back of the class and slumped into the seat.
“Hey,” I said putting my legs on the empty desk in front of me.
“Hey, didn’t know you were in this class,” Peter pointed out.
“I mean I don’t think I’ve been here since the second week of school? Yeah I’m not sure. So from the beginning of sophomore year to now would be like maybe 1…2...3. No 2, yeah 2.” I went on before realizing I was rambling “Sorry I’m talking too much I’m like tiniest bit faded right now, and okay let me shut up,”
“No, no you’re fine. I like hearing you talk”
“I’ll be right back,” I whispered before raising my hand.
“Yes Y/N?” Ms Warren asked.
“Can I go to the bathroom?”
She sighed “Uh, Yes I guess that’s fine just don’t take to long,”
I grabbed the pass and started down the hallway. I was never planning to go to the bathroom. In all honesty I was going to the freshmans’ lunch cause I’d gotten hungry. I was in the line to get snacks when I felt a buzz in my pocket. I knew it was the burner phone so I got my chips and went outside to the area of the school with no cameras. Looking around to make sure no one was looking. I opened the text. Which read
this T?- B
yes, do you still have it?- T I responded
I do- B
ok meet at usual X and Place- T
ok- B
I’d confirmed my brother could pick up my sisters from daycare. Then I wouldn’t have to worry about them at home when I was doing what I needed to do.
I was trying to keep a low profile. I don't need anyone to claim they saw Thorn tonight. Since I’ve been on the radar of the police more often lately. No one would be looking in an abandoned train cart anyways. I‘d be fine. I just went with a black hoodie and a bandana to cover my face.
But of course Black Cat was in her suit because when was she ever not.
“You sure this is it?” I asked
“Yes I’m sure,” she said and placed the flash drive in my hand. I stuffed it in the pocket of my hoodie.
“Don’t forget what we talked about,” she said pointedly.
“Yeah, yeah I’ve got you,”
Great now I have to get into the government protected flash drive and clear her name. Just as I was about to turn to leave. The sound of someone sliding open the doors to one of the carts.
“Were you followed?” she whispered
“No of course not,” I rolled my eyes
I only had one weapon on me but I knew that Black Cat could handle whoever it was. Although just because she could do this on her own doesn’t mean I was gonna help. I had one expandable baton. Waiting for whoever was here to come in. I got my baton knocked out of my hand.
The fight that broke out wasn’t really a fight if you could even call it that, it was just like 3 guys trying to get the flash drive and us knocking them out. I did however get my fair share of bruises but that’s only because I was thrown into the wall once. I did have a pretty deep gash on my forehead but I should be able to cover it with a headband.
I almost gave myself a heart attack when I checked my sisters’ room because I forgot they were at our brothers house. My dad also still wasn’t home so I was just sitting home alone on the living room floor watching ‘Nick at Night’ with a caked up bloody forehead eating cold leftover spaghetti.
I knew my dad had come home because I heard the keys turning in the door but I was too tired to move.
I should’ve moved.
By the way the door was slammed shut I could tell he was in a bad mood. And what’d he do when he was in a bad mood? Take it out on me.
I don’t remember what happened. I just know he said I looked like a whore and I probably got heated and blacked out, but I do know I was in immense pain and my nose was bleeding and the police were on their way.
Only two things could come from my dad calling the police: I get sent back to the Psych ward or I get arrested. I wasn’t about to stick around to find out which one was going down.
I grabbed my skateboard and took off. Technically he did kick me out so he couldn’t say I ran away.
I can’t exactly recall how I remember where he lived seeing as I hadn’t been there since his girlfriend died.
I was going to knock but I knew he never actually opens the door. I went around to the back and started banging on the window and I’m sure looking at this from an outsider's view it must’ve looked like I was breaking in. Which I’m not sure that I wasn’t. I could see his shadow.
“Open the fucking door, Wade!” I yelled from the door I could see his light was on.
He sleepily strutted down to the door and slid it open.
“What do you- Oh my god you look terrible,” He stated.
“Oh really? Thanks, I didn’t notice,” I spat back pushing past him.
I popped down on the couch.
“I need somewhere to stay for a minute” I said once I was settled in.
He moved over to me and grabbed my face but I pushed his hands away.
“I’m fine,” I lied “Can I stay here though?”
“Did you really think I’d ever say no?”
He examined my face again
“Did your dad do this?” He asked.
He took my silence for the answer that it was.
“Do you want me to kill him?” He asked as what I thought was supposed to be a joke but I was scared to answer yes cause I knew there was a chance he actually would.
He was never very fond of my dad from the moment he’d met my mom. Wade was always trying to keep my mom away from him.
If only she’d listened.
“Yes, I was joking and go clean your face before you get infected”
Oh well I guess I voiced that thought out loud.
I promise I was just looking for the first-aid kit but who was I to say no to a 6 ounce bottle of Hennessy. It was almost as if it’s eyes bore into my soul calling after me because it knew I was too weak to resist.
The sweet burning sensation of it going down my throat was relieving and fun at first until I realized I was turning into my dad. Then it wasn’t so appealing anymore it was just depressing.
The last thing on earth that I’d want would be anything like him. It was pathetic.
It was pathetic how I had to throw up because apparently I couldn’t handle my alcohol.
It was pathetic how I couldn’t even bring myself to stand in the shower.
It was pathetic how I couldn’t even hide the fact I was drunk.
It was pathetic how I broke down crying in front of Wade.
It was pathetic how he had to lull me to sleep by stroking my hair.
It was pathetic because I knew he wasn’t mad.
It was pathetic because it wasn’t anger it was pathetic because it was pity.
Pity. I hated pity with my entire chest. She always seemed to just hold you down underneath the water knowing you couldn’t breath but the feeling around you made you believe you were floating. It’s like the feeling of drowning in the open sea but it isn’t painful but still you know you’re gonna die but you can’t help but look at how beautiful everything around you is. All the fish, the seaweed, the sunlight shining through the water. But still you’re drowning and you know you’re gonna die so how beautiful can it really be?
Pity. That’s what I saw in the hallways so I knew I must’ve looked terrible because no one bothered to say anything negative about me. Everytime anyone looked at me it was like they knew. They knew. They knew that I had a shitty life and a fucked up family. Of course they didn’t but I couldn’t help the nagging feeling that everyone knew.
Everyone was looking at me with a glint of pity in their eyes because I knew I looked like I was going to pass out at any moment now, I had bruises everywhere, I had no makeup to cover them up, possibly had a broken rib, and the gash on my forehead was probably still visible under the sweatband.
Literally everyone looked like they felt bad for me. Except Flash. I never thought I’d say this but, thank God for Flash. The only sense of normalcy I’d experienced all day, was him calling me a witch then acting like it was the funniest thing ever and walking off after I told him to go fuck himself. One thing about Flash is he’s unoriginal. He'll find one “good” joke and use it for the rest of his life. The fact I could put out a lit match in my mouth spread around through a tiktok at some point, and he’s been calling me a witch ever since. I’m assuming the fact I had a pretty gothic style freshman year probably played a part in it too. Major small dick energy right there.
I was on the verge of passing out and all I really wanted was to go out and get high with my old friends but I can never get what I want. Can I? The universe must really fucking hate me.
I just went to the nurses office and slept all throughout lunch but when I woke it was like I was even more tired than before.
I wonder if this is what zombies feel like. I couldn’t tell if it was getting bad again or if I was just getting sick because the lines were blurred between a depressive episode and a cold or the flu. However my eyes were watery and my nose was stuffed so hopefully it was the latter.
The odds had finally aligned in my favor and the class I’d skipped like all year teacher was out. We had my favorite sub who was really just the ISS teacher. Normally I would’ve sat by him and caught him up on all the chisme I had but I felt terrible. So I just leaned on the closest person to me instinctively. Once my brain caught up to my body and I realized. I was laying on Peter's shoulder. I shot it and immediately apologized.
“Oh no, you’re fine I don’t mind,” he said.
Well okay then. I think I slept at least 10 minutes in every single class today. Which is good I’d need it cause I forgot I promised my brother I’d babysit today.
After I sent Wade a text that I probably wouldn’t be back in his house for a while. I went to my brother's house. Sometimes I’m jealous of him for getting to escape our dad and live in an actual nice area.  He literally has a house. Like he has his own property, no landlords or anything.  Pros of him having a different mom I guess. However he needs to stop having kids. Like yes I love my niece and my nephews however they can be the biggest pain in the ass.
“I get off at like 11, so make sure they don’t break anything or die thanks, and you know where everything’s at, so,” He said, giving me a hug before walking towards the door but right before he opened it he turned around with a smile on his face.
“Oh and don’t get my kids high,”
I rolled my eyes trying to keep the edges of my mouth from turning into a smile. I lost that battle.
“Yeah, yeah whatever asshole,” I flipped him off.
I went into the room where the youngest child was sleeping. Taylon, he was about 1 I believe. At least I wouldn’t have to worry about him for a while. I made it back to the front room where the two trouble makers Kaitlyn and Jason. Kaitlyns the oldest at 4 years old and Jason at 2. Although I don’t think Kaitlyn has ever gotten in trouble like ever because she’s a huge daddy’s girl.
I had like 36 missing assignments for Physics and about 4 things of homework one test to study for, a partnered project to work on, still had to go two decathlon practice 3 days a week, and a flashdrive to get past the firewall of. God could I use some adderall right now.
By distracting the kids in the room with me with the Cocomelon channel.
I’d put my headphones on and nodded along to my music and actually got two homework assignments done in a relatively short time before the screaming started. I went to get Taylon who’d woken up because he peed. I changed his diaper but he was still crying.
I truly did not have time for this. I fed him and everything. Thank God the Cocomelon was still distracting the other kids. Whoever made that channel needs a raise. I could not get him to stop crying for more than 5 minutes. I found if I held him he’d stop but I didn’t have the time to just sit around holding him.
I gave him my phone and let him play with that which shut him up.
Then Kaitlyn decided to come and pester me about food. I made peanut butter jelly sandwiches, but they decided they didn’t want them after I’d already made them. So here I was making spaghetti with a toddler on my hip and doing homework at the same time.
I’d actually gotten used to all this multi tasking that’s when I heard a knock at the door.
I put the spoon back in the pot and closed my textbook heading over to the door.
I open the door to Peter standing there.
“Uh Hello?” I asked more than said.
“Uh, yeah hi, we were supposed to work on the project?”
“Oh shi-” I almost said then remembered I was holding a kid. “Sorry I forgot,” If we're being completely honest I don’t remember anything from school that day nor do I remember telling him to come here but I wasn’t gonna send him away.
“Well you can come in” I announced stepping towards the side of the door.
“Sorry about the chaos” I gestured to everything. ”You can go sit on the couch, I’ll be right over”
He did just that and sat his backpack on his lap.
“Jason, Kaitlyn bebé ven a buscar tu comida”
( Jason Kaitlyn baby come get your food)
They made their way over still attached to the tablet.
“I thought your dad said no tablet at the table?” I said. I wasn’t really going to take it away, I was just teasing.
“I thought you were fun tía,” Jason shot back.
“I am fun!” I said fake hurt and they both giggled.
I slid the plates across the table towards them. “Here eat,”
“¿Es tu novio de ahí?” Kaitlyn asked looking over at Peter.
(Is that your boyfriend over there?)
“No he’s not, but can you watch your brother for me for a little bit?”
She nodded. I shifted Taylon off my hip and slipped him into his high chair and gave him a bag of chips.
Plopping down next to Peter I clapped my hands.
“Okay sorry about the wait, so what do we need to do?”
After explaining the project to me we’d gotten half of it done and Taylon was napping again and everyone else was quiet and watching TV. We probably could’ve finished the whole thing if we hadn’t gone on so many tangents. Peter was actually good at explaining things.
We talked about literally everything from favorite flavors of starburst to life goals and shit. I don't know what I want in life actually. It’d be cool to go to college but it’s expensive and no one else in my family has been.
When it got late Peter announced that he had to go.
“Alright let me walk you out,” I pushed up off the couch.
“You’re really smart, I know you don’t think that but you are,” he said almost out of nowhere once we were out the door. I could feel my face heat up. This is a moment I was thankful for my melanin allowing me not to blush.
“Thank you, you’re not so bad yourself, Parker,”
“So we're doing this same time tomorrow right?”
“Yes, that’s the plan,”
For the past week I’d convinced my brother to let my babysit everyday so I could still hang out with Peter. I never thought that we of all people could be friends. Before this he was so like “Peter” just way too much. Once you get to know him he’s not that bad. We’d finished the project and I still hadn’t done any of my other work but by the power of adderall I’d gotten into the flashdrive. I was too scared to check anything in it, but I did erase Black Cats name from the police station records.
It’d been at least three more days and I hadn’t done any work. I hadn’t talked to Peter or MJ or anyone else either. The one other human I’ve had contact with is Wade. Even with me living at his house it was still minimal. I hadn’t gotten much sleep because adderall keeps you up at all hours of the day but I don’t think I could survive without it.
I knew I had to be walking. I was walking because I had to. I mean I was walking and I had no intention of stopping. I was getting major deja vu. This exact place felt so familiar.
Oh- that’s why.
I was in the projects where I used to live. I was off in Bronxchester off of 156th St. Ann’s Avenue. I hate this place so much.
I hated it.
I hated it.
I hated it.
Having to live in a rat infested one bedroom apartment sleeping cramped up on top of my siblings was literally the worst time of my life. The shitty school University Heights where half the girls were pregnant. Not to mention my dad was on a fucking rage rampage all the time cause he couldnt get a job as a felon.
I was still walking though. I knew I was going somewhere. Not sure where until I’d gotten near the Hartz chicken on the end of the street. That’s where I was going. I knew I was meeting up with my friend. How could I forget that? I was about to cross the street until someone in a grey van rolled down their window sticking out a gun.
I knew she was gonna get shot. There was nothing I could do to stop it. Yet still I was screaming at least I was trying to. I couldn’t find my voice.
By the time I could it was too late.
I’d seen her. The bullets piercing her skin would be something seared into my brain forever. And as fast as the car came it was gone.
Then I was running. I was running to get to her because I could still help her. I had to.
She was bleeding and there was too much blood. It was everywhere. I remember my brother told me if someone is ever bleeding out you need to stop the blood.
I could barely see because my tears were clouding my vision. I was pushing down on her stomach screaming for someone to call 9-1-1. Just to help.
“You’re gonna be okay,” I remember saying it over and over again I don’t know if I was trying to convince myself or her..
The police got here right after I’d watched her eyes gloss over just because that’s how it works in Melrose. Yes she was gone but she was only the first of many. The police had never done anything for me before so why would they start now.
They had to pry me off her. They couldn't, I had to help, I had to… I had to help. She didn’t like to be alone. Yeah sure she’d done bad things but she didn't deserve this. She was just a kid. I was just a kid. They took her phone while I was screaming not to touch her.
 They asked for my parents' information. I didn’t want to tell them, I didn’t want my dad. I don’t wanna see him. I just wanted my friend back. They loaded her into the back of the ambulance. I
 knew they were driving away. I was running and screaming. I could feel people staring. I knew they were looking at me. I knew they knew. I didn’t care, I had to run. I had to get her. A pair of hands grabbed me from behind and I started thrashing.
I couldn’t, I can’t, I had to help, I had to help her. I was still screaming and my throat was sore. Her blood was everywhere, it was all over me and I couldn’t I couldn’t help her. I couldn’t help myself. I was scared.
“Hey,” I felt myself being shook from behind. “Hey!”
I turned around to Wade’s familiar face.
“I’m sorry for waking you, I know it’s dangerous or something like that but you were just screaming and I got worried,”
Wasn’t supposed to wake me?
“I was,” my voice was small I sounded 5 I felt 5 “I was sleeping walking?”
“Yeah you were”  he confirmed, leading me to one of the stools by his kitchen island.
He sat me down, walked off and got me a glass of water. I didn’t realize how bad I was shaking until I tried to bring the cup to my lips.
He brought a towel to the side of my arm dabbing at it. The blood dripped from the side of my wrist all the way down to my elbow.
“What’d you cut yourself on?” He asked and I shrugged my shoulders.
“You know they never even said her name?” I said after we sat in silence for a moment.
“What?”
“Rose you know my friend,”
“Oh…” he said as the realization of who I was talking about settled in.
“Yeah her, they never said her name no one said it around me because they felt I was gonna break, they all just looked at me like I was made out of glass, I don’t even know how people knew I was there. But I was- I was just so angry, ”
I waited to see if he was going to say anything but he didn’t. He was just going to listen, no jokes to lighten the mood just listening.
“Even on the news. To everyone outside of St Ann’s she was just a ‘14 year old girl caught up in gang violence fatally shot’ they used a terrible picture of her too. It made my blood boil that, that was all she got, Then I realized that’s just how it was for us and the only way I was making it out the hood was if it was 6 feet under,”
My mom used to say that’s what they did for black people, used a picture of them looking ‘hood’ some people call it a thugshot. They use a picture that makes them look mean and aggressive. She was neither of those things she was the nicest person I ever knew. She just got caught up in the gang mess because it was the only family she had.
“I’ve never talked about this before, but I feel like everyone just forgot about her like it’s only been 2 years and I’ve never heard anyone say her name. At least not around me” I ran my finger on the tattoo of a rose. “This was the first tattoo I’d ever gotten I did it myself so it’s kinda shitty but I feel like it keeps her memory alive, because if no one else was gonna do it and If wasn’t gonna then who would you know?” I trailed off for a second. Then noticed he was in the Deadpool suit just without the mask.
“Where are you going?” I asked.
“Now I think you know me well enough to know I’m not telling you that,” He smiled and I smiled back weakly.
“You’ll be okay though?” He asked.
“Now I think you know me well enough to know I’ll be okay,” I turned his own words against him.
I glanced back down at the tattoo and I remember looking over the tattoo on my finger for you it means merely nothing. Just another girl getting another basic tattoo. For me it means everything. It was the way I fought back. It was my first ‘fuck you’ to everyone to everything. It was my best friend. It was my first love. So to you I’m just another girl with another basic rose tattoo but to me. To me? It’s the way I remember it’s the way I keep my friend with me. It’s the way I’d make sure I couldn’t forget the unforgettable. Roses are delicate and fragile but they’ll hurt you when you try to pick them. So even the most beautiful of flowers would defend itself if it came to it. To you my rose tattoo is just a flower. However, to me Rose was the most beautiful human this world had ever seen.
Art had to be my favorite subject. Solely for the reason I’ve never had a non chill art teacher, but today it was Physics which is usually my least favorite class.
Only because the class made me feel like my day was turning around.
MJ was standing next to me when I opened by locker and loudly exclaimed
“Yes!”
“What?” She turned to me “What is it?”
“Sorry for scaring you, it's nothing. I just found some candy” I held up the Push Pop “See?”
“Oh if you don’t show up to practice today they’re kicking you off the decathlon team, and make sure you get to class on time though,”
“Of course when have I ever been late,”
She gave me a look that had “really?” written all over it.
“Okay don’t answer that question but I’m going, now you need to get to class you have a test to take,”
I’d taken the test already because I had Harrison’s class on A day, but MJ wasn’t the type to cheat. She was smart enough and didn’t need my help.
She was very smart but she wasn’t smart enough to know the Push Pop wasn’t really a push pop at all.
It was a cart that I thought I’d lost. It was just hidden in an empty Push Pop. Nightmares made me stressed and I know the perfect way to relieve stress. I know many actually such as (good) sex, running, fighting, throwing knives at shit, and weed. Luckily for me this is the last one.
So here I was sitting in the back of the class by the farthest window away from Peter with a “Push Pop” in my mouth and my head down on the desk. I never really paid attention in class but today we were just watching some documentary so I didn’t have to.
One of the students office workers came in and gave a note to the teacher and I figured it was about the new student I heard some of the students talking about here and there. I didn’t think anything of it until.
Briana walked in behind Principal Morita. Briana was my best friend from elementary through middle school and the first half of freshman year before I switched schools. She acted... I didn’t wanna say ghetto but you could definitely tell she was from Melrose if you were from there. I can’t blame her with her dad being a leader to the local set and all.
The teacher told her to introduce herself to the class and she kept it short and sweet. Then she was told to find a seat. I waved her over and she sat next to me.
“I thought you’d forgotten about me,” She said.
I laughed
“As if, you’re the most extra person I know,” I said, taking another hit.
“First of all fuck you second of all give me a hit,” I smiled handing the “Push Pop” over to her.
”Don’t you dare get caught.”
She stuck her head under the table lightly blowing out her mouth then inhaling before the vapours could go too far out.
“So where you been at? Haven’t heard from you in a minute,”
“Been busy with school shit, but I’ve been around,” I responded taking the “Push Pop” from her again.
“How’s your dad?” She asked. I just gave her an incredulous look and went.
“How’s your dad,”
“Same old same old,”
We spent the rest of the class with her catching me up on the people from our crew and reminiscing. Also might be good to mention we finished half the cart. So I was bugging. We both were. I would not have remembered to go to the decathlon meeting if it weren’t for MJ reminding me again. I didn’t really care for the team. I was just an alternative and I was only doing it so I could pass Mr. Harrington’s class because of the  extra credit.
Thank God Peter wasn't at the meeting. I hadn’t talken to him since we turned in our project last week. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to talk to him per se. I could just feel myself getting closer to him and I didn't have time for more friends. Because everyone I end up loving leaves me. The more people you let into your life the more people you give the chance to leave. Seeing as I was ‘Thorn’ I probably shouldn’t get close to Spiderman anyway.
Flash was talking about Briana. He didn't say her name directly but I knew he was talking about her. Since he was talking about the new girl. He talked shit about everyone, so I don’t know why this made me as angry as it did. It just rubbed me the wrong way but it did. Seeing as I naturally gave zero fucks and had no impulse control. I definitely had way less control over myself when high. So before I knew it I’d punched him in the nose.
“Y/N!” Liz and MJ yelled simultaneously.
“What the fuck?” Flash screamed, holding his face.
“Fuck you! Fuck you! Fucking daddy’s money ass bitch,” I pointed in my face.
“Y/N enough, go to the office,” Mr. Harrington said.
I could hear Flash calling me crazy as I walked out the room. Which put a smile on my face. The weird thing about principals is that the more you get in trouble the more they like you and the less harsh your punishments. I only got a week of detention which wasn’t too bad but that stupid “so you got dentention” video of Captain America was gonna get extremely annoying.
I was right it’d only been two days and every time I heard it I wanted to rip my head off. By the third day Peter and MJ had both joined me.
MJ didn’t even actually have detention she never did; she just liked to “draw people in despair” or whatever it was that she said. Today she was drawing Peter. It was surprising to see him here.  I was scrolling through tiktok. I was going to say something to him but what would I even say?
I grew some balls and I’d said hi. It was just small talk but we still spoke nonetheless. The week was going by so fucking fast. Tomorrow’s the day we’re going to Washington. I did have to spend a lot of my saved money though. I’d spoken to my sisters and they said dad was sober now and he wanted me to come home. Which I’m not sure if I believe. I mean I know he’s sober. I talked to him too but how long would that last. How many times has this happened before? I don’t have time to worry about him.
It seemed like I had only blinked and now I was on the bus to D.C. Now for the next couple of days I gotta stay in a hotel room. Nothing out of the ordinary for me, except now I get to stay with MJ and Bri. I don’t know how I managed to convince Mr. Harrington to let her come.
Peter had almost missed the bus but showed up last minute. Liz was drilling people and MJ was sitting near her participating so I had the seat to myself. Bri was behind me on facetime with her boyfriend who just happened to be my ex. None of it was awkward though since we only dated for like a week and decided we were better off as friends. If we were being honest I was so tired. I felt like shit. Listening to sad music when sad is a set routine of mine so I was listening to Violent Crimes and staring out the window before I knew it I had drifted off to sleep.

Survey #467
“oh, mary, mary, ain’t this fun?  /  mary, mary, i’ve got a gun”
If the last person you kissed asked you to marry them, what would you do? Pray to god it wasn't in public and tell him it's waaaay too soon for that one. Does your favorite uncle have any children? Yeah, a son and daughter. Name all the members (first, middle and last names) from your favorite band. Ha, it's funny how once upon a time, I could do this. All I've got now is John Michael Osbourne. Have you ever heard a young child swear? Maybe? Have you ever seen someone get a piercing/tattoo?: Yes to both. Has a taste of something ever made you smile? Boy meet me at The Cheesecake Factory and see what my face does lmaooo As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a paleontologist sooo badly. I wanted to discover new dinosaurs, put a shitload of work into unearthing fossils and being so proud to see the final results... Even now as an adult, if I could handle the heat, traveling, and hardcore school, I'd still love to do that. Would you cuss the person you hate the most out to their face? No. My hatred for her is unjustified and I'd rather just not say anything to her. Have you ever spent more than two weeks in a wheelchair? No. Where do you see your closest friend in ten years? As one of the strongest people around. I imagine her with a job in medical coding, while also pursuing the hobbies of ball python breeding and writing. I'm sure she'll have loads of pets to love, too! Do you like Florence + The Machine? I've never listened to them. Did you watch the presidential debates? No. Do you ever watch Dr. Phil? No. Are you typically unattracted to people outside of your race? No; I can be attracted to any race. Have you ever ridden any animal other than a horse? No. Do you brush your hair when it’s wet? Yes. Do you eat the crusts of your bread? Yeah, I always have. Have you ever flown a kite? Yeah! At my childhood home, there was a tobacco field directly across the street, and when they weren't in season so the field was flat, Dad would help us with getting kites set up and in the air. Those are good memories. How are you for money? I don't make any money. Mom is struggling. Do you think you are more intelligent than the average person? Ha, no. Do you ever think about why we are here? Does it matter? We're here, so make the most of it. Do you like cherries? I fucking hate cherries. Name a celebrity that you admire that nobody would expect you to: Jeffree Star, probs. Can you use a yoyo? Not well, but yeah. Do you think Jenna Marbles’ videos are funny? I've actually never watched her. Do you like folk music? NOOOOOOOOO Ever had a crush on somebody of the same sex? Yes. Do you know any lesbians? Yep. Favourite member of your favourite band: I'm unfamiliar with all but Ozzy himself. And Ozzy is rad. Who’s your favourite female rapper? I don't have one. When you were younger, were you ever in a relationship with someone you now realize was way too old for you? No. Have you ever had a seizure? No. I sometimes have very, very quick spasms when I'm falling asleep that feel like what I assume a seizure would, but they barely last a second. They seriously jerk me awake, though, and are very startling. What’s the oldest man-made object you own? I dunno. Is there anything you feel like you need a break from? Not really, no. What do you hate to hear people joke about? I will actually and remorselessly deck you in the jaw if you make a joke about rape. There are other things that are absolutely forbidden joking matters for me, too. What’s the largest animal you’ve seen in the wild? Hmmm... Nothing that big, really. Maybe a whitetail deer buck? Do any of your friends or family members have strange occupations? Not to my knowledge. Have you ever been in weather so severe that you feared for your safety? Oh yeah. We've had some savage thunderstorms. What political issues are the most important to you personally? LGBTQ+ rights and just equality in general, the pro-choice movement, environmental conservation, gun control, the abolishment of poverty and homelessness... There is honestly a lot. I could keep going. Do you know anyone who doesn’t know how to cook even just simple recipes? ... Me. :x Especially now that I'm in a relationship, I really want to make a greater effort to learn. I want to prove to him I give a damn about the success of our relationship and that I'm capable of being an adult that can take part in general adult responsibilities. ^What’s stopping them from learning this basic life skill? Laziness. Forgetfulness. The fear of getting burned. What small thing makes you automatically distrust someone? I can pick up on sketchy body language from a mile away. I'm too paranoid not to. Of all the states/provinces in your country, which one is your favorite? At least from photographs I've seen, Utah appears BEAUTIFUL. That whole region of the U.S. in general. Are there any obscure foods you’ve eaten that most people have never tried? That's very unlikely. I'm far from explorative with food. When you travel to other countries, do you always try the local cuisine? I've never been outside the U.S. I would probably do that, though. I'd really want to experience the culture as thoroughly as I could. What did you do for your 19th birthday? Hell if I remember. What’s the kindest thing a total stranger has done for you? I remember as a young kid, my parents, two sisters, and I were getting food at McDonald's, and whoever was in front of us paid for our meals. Such a sweet gesture for a larger family. Have you ever used a meal kit delivery service? No, but there actually is one that I can't recall the name of that I'd like to try when I cook myself, especially getting started learning, but yeah, subscription fees. You see a lot of YouTubers get sponsored by them, if that rings a bell. Do you have any psychological issues rooted in events from your childhood? Possibly my fear of men, with my dad having been an alcoholic that had a 50/50 chance of being very angry when drunk. How organized are the files on your computer? Pretty organized, I'd say. I put stuff into folders. Would you date someone with braces? Yes? Do you ever rehearse conversations before you have them? Only always. Do you get angry at yourself or at others more often? Myself, for sure. When taking a cab, do you talk to the driver? I've never even taken a cab. Who or what greets you at the door every time you come home? Nobody, really. My cat is occasionally in the living room to see who's home, but not always because he's a lazy cat, ha ha. Do you ever chat about your favourite video games with your friends? Not really, no. I wish. Have you ever supported anyone’s Kickstarter? If so, what was it? No, bc I'm poor. Are you currently studying a language? If so, which one? No. Ever had a friend online for a long time without seeing a photo of them? Yeah. Do you carry pepper spray? No, but I want some 'cuz I'm paranoid as hell. Are you waiting on anything right now? No. Have you ever been described as shy? Is it true? Oh, always. It's absolutely true. Name something you’re a complete sucker for? Baby animals, to name one thing. Do you remember when you first went on the internet? Nope. What is one way someone could completely put you off on a first date? Arrogance/over-confidence. What about a way someone could make you like them more on a first date? Make me genuinely laugh a lot, to name one way. Are you in love right now? Not yet. I love him with our decade of history, but I need more experience as a couple before I've got the confidence to say that. Do you wanna get married anytime soon? It wouldn't be smart to. I want to be in a strong relationship for quite a few years before I want that. Have you ever kissed someone in a band? No. Has someone ever made you a Build-A-Bear? No but oh my fucking god I wish!!!!!! Did your mom or dad ever put soap in your mouth? No, but Mom would threaten to. What was the last fruit you ate? Well, I had strawberry yogurt earlier today. Who was the last person to make you laugh? Girt. He is very, very good at that. Have you ever dated someone with more piercings than you? No. Would you kiss the last person you kissed again? Hell yeah man. Is there one night of your life you wish had never happened? I wish it hadn't happened the way it did. Do you have a close relationship with your sibling(s)? No. What was the last thing that you shared? Some watermelon Sour Patch Kids with my mom. Do you think people talk behind your back? You couldn't get me to believe my mom doesn't at least sometimes to my sisters even if you tried your absolute damnedest. In real life do you laugh like ‘haha,’ 'hehe’ or something else? It depends on what I'm laughing at/at what intensity. Do you have any unusual skills? Nah. Who’s your favourite person? I don't have a sole favorite person. I love many people in different ways for varying reasons. Are there any chores you actually enjoy doing? No. When did you last have an "Oh, I get it now!" moment? Watching Attack on Titan yesterday w/ Girt. Have your parents ever suspected something untrue about you? My mom HAD to have suspected I was doing something FAR worse than innocent meerkat RP to have borderline fucking traumatized me invading my privacy and forcing shit out of me regarding what I was always doing on the computer so secretively. Like I get it, she was a concerned mother, but I was a fucking WRECK because I found it so embarrassing. It was insulting that she didn't trust her well-behaved daughter. What do you think about video games? They're great for both the creators and consumers. They're wonderful expressions of creativity, and so much fun to experience as a player, delving into a new world and getting engrossed in the story. I could go onnnn and onnnnn about what video games mean to me. I've gone my whole life as a loyal gamer. Are there any forms of Art you personally find pointless? I really, really don't get a lot of abstract art that's worth fucking thousands, BUT, I absolutely disagree that they are without purpose. The artist created what they did for SOME reason. As a distraction, a method of expressing emotion, to convey an idea... Are you tired right now? I have been SO ridiculously tired today. Like it's unreal. I've taken I wanna say three naps and I'm still sleepy. What’s something you do a lot? Drink something. I'm not talking about alcohol; just in general, I ALWAYS need some kind of drink by me, and I go through drinks pretty quickly. Are you currently on any other websites? Yeah, I'm watching YouTube. Are you good at using Photoshop? I'm decent, I guess. Have you ever been told you naturally tilt your head a certain way? Yes, actually, at least by my mom, and she's right. My head tends to tilt VERY slightly to the right, and I can tell by how easy it is to bend my head that way as opposed to left. I'll feel a biiiit more strain.

What the Pic?
Participants: @ariasfandom, @rebelmeg, @wolfnprey, @ladydarkphoenix-blog, @bookdragon13, @liquidlightz, @jeminamoonnight, @caiti-creative-corner, @ribbonsflyingoutthewindow, @ibelieveinturtles
Tumblr media
@ariasfandom - Bucky started watching Oobi and wanted to make an OC of it
@rebelmeg - all sam wanted to do was sleep in.  that was it, that was all he wanted out of a saturday.  which, of course, was the first thing his annoying houseguest decided to ruin, with a fist in his face at the crack of dawn.  a fist wearing googly eyes.  "bucky, what the hell?"
@wolfnprey - This is the default picture Clint sends out when he's judging. Bucky retaliates by posting his own in the vents and hides Clint's arrows.
@ladydarkphoenix-blog - Bucky gets caught watching kids(Sam's nephews, Clint's kids, insert kids here} unaware but has no idea how to entertain them so somehow ends up telling stories with his hands playing characters that are surprisingly effective
@bookdragon13 - Bucky gets drunk on Asgardian mead and thinks it’d be hilarious to put googly eyes on his metal hand and make it talk for him the rest of the night
@liquidlightz - Being an Eldritch deity apparently wasn't as awe inspiring as he'd always assumed himself to be, given that his host was entirely un-phased and thought it was funny to make puppet hands out of him and make up silly stories.  The fact that he found this insult highly entertaining was even worse for his ego.
Keep reading for more!
Tumblr media
@bookdragon13 - Bucky buys that for Clint after staying with him for a couple days. Clint absolutely loves it Of course
@rebelmeg - "likl.  likl?!  who approved that?  how did that make it to store shelves!  this is a disgrace!" "bucky, you really need to calm down." "i'll calm down when that travesty is removed from my sight!" going shopping with bucky is never boring.
@ladydarkphoenix-blog - Bought as a gift for himself because Bucky found the misspelling hilarious and it would bug the most important of his guests by making them guess if he didn't notice that little detail or what was happening in his head. Watching them try to deal with it gives Bucky much joy
@wolfnprey - The group stares, unimpressed, as people in the gallery move around them. Nat and Tony insist that the artist is just fucking with people, while Sam and Clint argue over how deep the meaning is. Bucky takes one look at Steve and knows his friend is dying a bit inside at how low art has stooped in the modern age. Bucky's nice enough not to comment that it's made out of a damn shower rug.
@ariasfandom - "Bucky, we live together. I know for a fact you didn't "wake up like this"
@liquidlightz - In the morning, his boyfriend told him how beautiful he looked, and how amazing his hair was, despite having mussed it all up during their passionate evening before.  Apparently Bucky didn't suffer from bed hair but from magically self-smoothing hair.  Ok, so maybe he used his magiks a little to keep it looking so good, what was the harm in that.  So when Bucky saw this in a store he just had to get it and put it by the foot of his bed.
Tumblr media
@ladydarkphoenix-blog - Bucky never thought he'd be turned into a dog. He also never thought he'd be staying with Clint and his dog or that the kids in the building would try to disguise him like this
@rebelmeg - bucky wasn't sure to think when he opened his door one morning to find a dog on the step wearing graucho glasses.  he also wasn't sure if he should trust the note tied to the dog's collar that said, "pet me, i'm yours."  but either way, the spaniel was pretty cute, and it turned out to be a snuggler.  worst things could happen.
@ribbonsflyingoutthewindow - If you're going to name your dog Professor Diggory and you're going to ask Bucky to dogsit him, you should be prepared for the fact that Bucky’s going to accidentally make him an internet celebrity. Groucho glasses and the ability to pose very still for a picture while Bucky holds a pretzel between his lips is the easiest way to have a booming Instagram account in under a week. Bucky and Professor Diggory are practically professionals now. Don't be jealous.
Tumblr media
@rebelmeg - it has happened every time.  every single time he goes to the mcdonald's closest to his house, they manage to mess up his order somehow.  actually, he's starting to suspect it's on purpose.  there had definitely been a smirk on the guy's face when he handed bucky his order through the window.  that might explain why his request for a cheeseburger with just ketchup had nothing but ketchup between the buns.  hmm.  this might mean war.
@ibelieveinturtles - Sick of working long hours at minimum wage, dealing with shitty customers amd an even shittier manager, Bucky decides its time to try that malicious compliance thing.
@ladydarkphoenix-blog - What's happened to customer service?!?! Back in his day if you made a simple request for a burger with only ketchup the kitchen was smart enough to know what you meant. Were they messing with him? Can they not figure out what a simple order meant? Bucky sighed and shook his head. He'd had worse dinners
@ribbonsflyingoutthewindow - So Steve's got a fuckton of allergies and quite frankly, Bucky doesn't even know what they all are, so telling the person at the drive thru that Steve wanted "a McDouble with just ketchup" was a precautionary action. He thought because he knew Steve was allergic to onions and dairy and mustard that it was safer to ask for only ketchup (probably Steve's only known safe-listed condiment) and potentially not be the one to accidentally murder a man he cared deeply about. But seeing Steve later open the hamburger bun to reveal a bun with a single squirt of ketchup inside made Bucky literally faceplant into his car horn. That was not what he fucking meant.
Tumblr media
@rebelmeg - swaying gently in the tropical breeze that smelled like ocean and flowers, bucky smiled to himself.  he was staring up at the clouds and palm trees overhead, his hammock creaking just slightly.  off to his right, his favorite person in the world was sprawled on a towel on the sand, soaking in the sun and drinking some kind of fancy umbrella drink with a silly straw.  best vacation ever.
@ladydarkphoenix-blog - Steve made jumping out of planes seem so easy. He never needed a parachute, never seemed to have the aches and pains after. With a sigh, Bucky stared up at the sky. At least he had a good view.
@ribbonsflyingoutthewindow - Pic Summary:When Bucky, Sam, and Natasha agreed to share an AirBnB for their Hollywood vacation, they'd only planned to see some famous sights and maybe try to pose with someone as famous as the monkey from the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Then they'd discovered that arguably the two hottest actors in the entire film industry, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, were sharing the house next door! Overnight it became a bet and then a high stakes fight to the (okay, not actual) death to see which of them could meet one of the two actors first. Bucky hadn't exactly been spying while he was standing hidden behind an open gate on their temporary neighbor's property, but he must have been well hidden anyway because the moment he went to run and hide, a sleek convertible pulled out of the drive and directly into a fleeing Bucky. He kind of hates that his first thought upon opening his eyes and looking up to see only trees and a cloudy blue sky above him was that at least he'd probably won the bet.

maybe, maybe
Tumblr media
a series of coincidental meet-ups lead to an unlikely relationship between two people.
characters: smiley jeon jungkook word count. 4.8k genre: college au / slice of life au
It couldn’t have gotten any cornier than this.
A girl bawling her eyes out on the bench in the dark, letting out sobs that may or may not be the cause of the park being named ‘weeping willow’. There isn’t a willow tree and though Harry Potter is an evergreen series that lives on in every millennial, that is not the reason for the park to be named that. It’s a place where people - girls, boys and non-binaries alike - go to bawl their eyes out because assignments and exams are taking up college students’ time so much so most, if not all, doesn’t have the time to socialize.
Tonight, you are one of those weeping college students.
You don’t need to worry about it being weird. It’s an established fact that if anyone heard someone crying while passing the park, they would go on with their life. Not everyone likes to be comforted, especially not by a stranger and though yes it’s a good gesture but it really is unnecessary. Most people who came here just want to bawl their eyes out and trudge back to the library and continue their work.
So yes, you’re 99% sure no one was going to look at you as though you’re insane even though the bench you’re sitting on is right by the walkway. Nobody’s passed here for the last five minutes, you think you might be able to get another five in and be done with it.
But as it turns out, for a reason only known to the cosmos, someone asked, “Um, excuse me?”
At first, you think you’re imagining it but after thirty-seconds, you look up with puffy red eyes and possibly some snot running down your nose. You suck it back in.
“Y-yes?”
He’s quite good-looking but that may be because the closest lamp post is three feet away and it’s situated right behind him, hence the rather attractive shadow cast over his face. At the present though, you’re fuddled by him smiling at getting your attention as though help has come.
“Hi, I’m here to send some stuff to my sister but I’m a little lost, could you maybe point me in the right direction to Alpha Pie?”
“Phi. Alpha Phi.” You stare him dead in the eye, uninterested, as though you’ve been cut off just before a good orgasm because the guy didn’t know a girl’s anatomy.
He echoes the words correctly this time with a smile you didn’t think could get brighter but it did. Standing up and wiping the tears (and ugh, you really did have snot on your face) off, you gesture for him to follow you.
The campus is lit by the same kind of dim lamp post that accompanied you awhile back while you bawled away. Some students passed you by and you can somewhat understand the hollow look in their eyes and silently acknowledge the mutual feeling of being tired and wanting to go back and lay on your comfortable bed.
“So, you live on campus?” He breaks the silence with - now that you’re actually looking at him - a dimpled smile.
“Sometimes,” you answer shortly, not giving any indication to elaborate further - whoever his sister is, you can only hope she’s not crying her eyes out in her room because of assignment season.
Other times you spend your nights at McDonald's or some bar that opens till 6.
Silence sets in again and though it may not be wholly comfortable but it’s preferred - by you at least. But it’s short lived, it seems as you hear another question come from him.
“Any reason why you were crying just now?” The corners of his lips are curled cutely and he’s looking at you as though he’s asking to make small talk which he possibly is and don’t really care about the reason.
You don’t really mind either as you shrug, eyes still puffy but you’re halfway to looking like you didn’t just cry at the Weeping Willow.
“The usual. Assignments, datelines. We’re here.”
He seems to be satisfied with the answer and the both of you seem to have arrived in front of the sorority-looking building with the alphabets ‘Alpha Phi’ written proudly on top of the entrance.
“Thanks, I couldn’t have found it myself now I’m five minutes early from the time we bet I would show up.”
You don’t particularly care.
“No problem.”
And with that, you wave a hand as in to dismiss the fact that he’d taken up the 5 minutes you could have gotten to continue crying.
-
You almost forgot you helped a stranger find his way when you met the aforementioned stranger again as you walk out of the wooden doors of Alpha Phi. He’s donned in a crisp white button down with the cuffs of the sleeves rolled up to just below his elbow and his hands in his pockets.
“Hi, we meet again.”
It takes you half a minute to register who he is and you’re surprised he remembers your face what with the baggy clothes and unkempt hair the other day. Not to say that you’re looking any better today but your eyes are lined and winged and your lips are glossed - that’s as far as you’re willing to go to look presentable during the daylight.
“Yeah and I’m assuming you manage to find your way without bothering a crying soul this time - I hope.”
He laughs, the dimples more prominent in the light and you confirm your suspicions that he wasn’t good-looking because there was not much lighting that night - he really is, simply, good-looking.
“You live here.” It’s not a question, it’s a statement - an affirmation to his question from last time.
“Sometimes.” The corners of your own lips upturn as you repeat your previous answer.
“About the other day -”
You wave a dismissive hand, this time really meaning it when you say, “Don’t mention it.”
“No, I was about to ask you to coffee but you left so fast and I was worried I’d get lost again if I went after you and you happen to turn my advances down. Where else would I get a guide?”
That manages to make you smile wider. Alright so he’s chill.
“What makes you think I won’t turn you down right now?”
He shrugs and only then do you realize how his sleeves wrap around his arms nicely.
“Maybe in the light I look less like a creep?”
“Maybe.” You echo though he looked nothing like a creep then and he looks less than a creep now, “but I’m good.”
The tiniest stretch of his smile tells you he’s surprised but he keeps it on and nods.
“I understand. Have a good day.”
“You too.”
That day, you go to class with the same amount of concentration and determination to pass and graduate. You’re in your third year and third years either make you or break you - as what the people a year above you have said.
-
“I hardly think this is a coincidence anymore.” At this point you can recognize the playfulness in the tone and you whirl around to see the same man whose offer for coffee you turned down.
“I’m meeting a friend,” it all comes together quite easily and you wiggle your hand in front of him with the same level of playfulness in his tone, “Sooyoung is your sister.”
The second year isn’t as close to you as she is to your roommate, Seulgi, but on one fine night when you just got back and she was hanging around in your room, she had implored you to go to this coffee shop which chocolate chip cookies - as she claims - are to-die-for. It’s not as odd anymore why Seulgi had plans and couldn’t accompany her and she sent you the address instead of going with you since you’re both going the same direction from the same sorority.
He whisks past you and places an order before turning to you, inclining for you to place your own order. You do and it turns out the place doesn’t sell cookies and it’s actually famous for its muffins.
“I hope everything’s well.” Though his tone is light as the night you thought he was making small talks when he asked why you were crying alone, you realize now that it’s genuine concern.
He’s just that type of nice guy that gets his sister into getting her best friend’s roommate into go to a coffee shop just because he wants to make sure you’re okay.
“Really, when you saw me, I just had a lot and needed to let it out. It’s not that deep but I appreciate you checking up on me.”
His eyes twinkle a bit as he takes his first sip of Americano, “it’s not easy - it’s gonna take a lot of tears but you’ll get through it someday.”
Raising an eyebrow, you scrutinize him through your lashes with a twitch of your own, “I might be wrong but did you really not know your way or did you just not want me to be crying alone but also didn’t want to look sympathetic so you asked for directions.”
“I really was loss.”
Not that you care so much so you lean back against the chair and take your first bite out of chocolate chip muffin.
-
Jeon Jungkook. He told you his name and you subtly noted that Sooyoung’s family name rhymes with mark but they could be half-siblings or step-siblings. If the two occasions (including this one) of meeting him in button downs and black or navy blue pants didn’t tell you, then he’s telling you now that he’s working for a company. From the looks of it, he seems like he’s able to come and leave anytime he wants but you can’t.
It’s not disappointment that crosses his face but it’s the kind of smile that looks like he knows you’re going to up and leave, if not the moment you see him, then half an hour into enjoying your coffees.
“Student council, director of the magazine club. I understand.”
“What else did Sooyoung tell you about me?” You raise an eyebrow, this time genuinely curious about what a stranger - maybe he qualifies as an acquaintance now - knows about you that you haven’t told him.
“She didn’t tell me, I saw your picture on the board when I was heading to Prof. Kim’s office.”
Judging from where Prof. Kim’s office is and his possible connection to the aforementioned professor, you squint your eyes, curiosity piquing by the second.
“You went to Yonsei?”
The wink he gives is uncalled for and paired with that cute smile, is a deadly combination. You almost want to sit in this coffee shop longer with him just to know more - enough to satisfy the curious cat within you before you erase him from your memories because you really can’t afford to get distracted right now.
“I’ll tell you if you agree to go to dinner with me.”
Though he’s a tad more cute and a little bit interesting than the men you’ve been on coffee dates with - back in your freshman days, now you barely have time to sleep - the fascination ends here. If you were going to fall for dimples and smiles, you would have been with Professor Kim’s son, Namjoon by now.
“Some other time then.”
“Meaning never.”
You almost look like you’re caught off guard but you mimic his curled lips and wonder if all the smiles that got your heart melting each time was a facade but coming from a man who looked at you like you were a person instead of a wreck back at the park, you somehow believe that his smiles are sincere, though sometimes they look sad.
“Here’s my number.” You hand over the poorly scribbled handwriting of a napkin to him and for once, wrote the digits correctly without intentional amendments.
He takes it between his index and middle fingers, waving it in the air as though he’s saying he accepts the treaty.
On the way to the group meeting - the essential reason you couldn’t stay long - you curse yourself out for leaving with a ‘see you later’ instead of a - as he mentioned - ‘maybe never.’
-
“Someone’s calling.” Namjoon nudges your elbow and true enough, the screen lights up and vibrates with a sequence of unfamiliar numbers which may not be of grave importance at the moment unless if Namjoon brought it to your attention because it’s distracting him from studying.
You have a tendency to not pick up unknown calls which to this day have proven to be equally advantageous and disadvantageous but you never learn.
“I almost thought you gave me the wrong number.”
There’s this urge to smile at the playfulness of the voice.
“Why would I?”
He lets out a short laugh as though not believing it completely but whether he places his trust on you or not is not particularly your concern. His omission to answer clearly says he and you share the same understanding of why people give fake numbers but it’s pointless to talk about that.
“Where are you now?”
“Studying.”
As though he expected the generic answer or perhaps maybe it’s just a conversation starter to get to his next point, you will never know.
“Come out. I’m at the bench from that night.”
Though odd and rather unlikely for him to be there right at this moment, you tread down the walkway, more curious than excited if he’s telling the truth of his whereabouts.
You don’t know why you thought he was lying at the first place but it would be a lie if you say you’re not surprised to see that familiar flock of dark brown hair on the same bench you spent bawling your eyes out two weeks ago. He waves at you when he sees you and pulls out a paper bag that’s been on his side to sit between the two of you.
“What is this?” You ask even though you have a sneaky suspicion already.
“Stusket. Study basket. Except it’s in a bag.”
The pride in his eyes when he mentions the first word is overly adorable so you opt to pay more attention to the items inside the bag instead of that smile. The bag comes in two hot Americano, a muffin, a bundle of colored pens, energy bars and a neck pillow which surprisingly fits all that.
“I was buying one for Sooyoung but I figured I should get two. Another one for you.”
You’re a little disappointed that you’re just an add on but it’s only a given that his someone as familiar as family comes first. You don’t know when you even started caring.
“I appreciate this but are you setting me up to fail because there’s no way I can stay awake with this.” You laugh as you put on the neck pillow and note how it’s the softest suede you’ve ever touched and also the fluffiest.
He shrugs, the sleeves fitting as nicely as usual around his arms and you realize his pink lips turn into a skin-colored hue under the lamp post.
“But really, thank you.” You say and you really mean it.
He waves a hand in the air in a familiar fashion which is confirmed to be yours as he echoes the words you once said to him, “don’t mention it.”
-
“What’s that?” Namjoon eyes the bag with an arched brow, wondering how you went out with only a ringing phone in your hand and came back with a bag.
It doesn’t take much for him to know what’s in the bag and who it’s for.
“Someone gave me a stusket. Study basket. Except it’s in a bag.” You echo Jungkook’s exact words and recall the twinkle in his eyes.
“I never knew you got a boyfriend.” Namjoon emphasizes on the last word but there’s something in his tone that sounds like an insult - just because you were busy doesn’t mean you couldn’t find a potential love interest even though that is completely and 100% true. And Jungkook isn’t a boyfriend -
“He’s Sooyoung’s brother.” That somehow doesn’t sit right, “A friend.”
Now, that doesn’t help at all and if there’s anything Kim Namjoon is good at, it’s reaffirming your words which more often than not manage to make it sound more ridiculous as you try to elaborate.
“You’re friends with your roommate’s best friend’s brother?”
This time, you really can’t say anything else because you are nowhere close to your roommate’s best friend let alone join any functions with her that would require for her brother to be there with her. But the facts are there and what are you if not friends?
“Yes.”
-
“____, my brother texted me to tell you he wants to see you.” Sooyoung bursts into your room at midnight in her yellow duckling pajamas and a sheet mask, you almost didn’t recognize her from the frequency of people walking around in sheet masks and printed pajamas if not for the mention of a certain brother.
“Why doesn’t he text me?” You check your phone, eyebrows almost knitted together at the absence of any text from him.
“There’s this thing called knocking.” Seulgi throws her alpaca plushie and Sooyoung surprisingly manages to catch it.
“I don’t know girl, but get your ass down there before one of the sis notices I’m up here in your room and not talking to my brother!” Are Sooyoung’s last words before she throws herself at Seulgi despite the latter’s desperate protest.
You slip a cardigan on before closing the door on the two girls who are starting a pillow fight on Seulgi’s bed with your pillow as Sooyoung’s weapon.
That dimpled almost has you skipping like a little girl.
You shoot him the same question you did with his sister as you gesture for him to follow you and away from the sorority. Before you get far, the hood covering part of your head pools at the back of your neck and a grinning Jungkook is standing just a few inches behind you, no doubt the culprit.
“Are you ashamed to be seen with me?”
“I just prefer to have my hood on.”
He sees through your lies and chuckles - whether he knows the exact reason for you reluctance to be seen with the same man more than once on campus besides your usual set of friends, you’re not sure.
Though you love the sisterhood you share between the girls of the sorority, you can’t deny that there are ears ready to eavesdrop and it’s never good when someone outside of your circle knows about anything especially if it concerns you and a boy. All this time, it’s established that you feel absolutely nothing for the male specimens that often become the talk of the house. If they knew - God help the overboard ‘support’ your sisters are more than willing to give you.
“How was your day?”
“Good.”
There’s a familiar silence that’s more comfortable than whatever it was the first time you walked him to the house.
“I was scared to text you. You might not come.”
He says out of the blue and so out of character, you have to pause and look at him to make sure he even said anything in the first place. His gaze is already on you and you can’t help but take a moment to digest that someone as composed as Jungkook would have fears and because of you for that matter.
“Why wouldn’t I?”
This time, there’s no tricks or games. The answer might have been obvious but it isn’t for you and the corners of Jungkook’s lips curls as he nods to himself as though he’s coming to terms with himself and realizing there was nothing to be afraid of.
“I get nervous texting the girl I like.”
-
Jungkook has texted you three days later and asked you if you were free Thursday night and you have no choice but to turn him down. Not that you want to but most of your days are planned out and are subject to your timetable. Though, this type of ‘no’ hasn’t let you sit well through out the day.
If you would be a little be more honest, you daresay you want to see him.
“Why didn’t you say yes?!” Seulgi cries and you have to toss a pillow on her face to remind her to lower her voice in case anyone hears.
You thank the universe that Sooyoung likes to keep to herself which is why you get along with her even though you don’t share her passion for cute bras, cats and male phallus - a quirky combination but you’re not about to kink shame. Seulgi on the other hand knows what to say and what to keep from people’s business - the two of them together makes an unlikely friendship which if you look closer, seems just right.
“You know I’m too busy for boys.”
Seulgi throws you a look which warrants an eye roll. You already know what she’s about to say.
“He’s not a boy, he’s a man.”
You’re not going to admit the significant difference between the two categories because 1) you’re not going to give her any room for more innuendos and 2) you’re not ready to face Jungkook after nodding and responding ‘cool’ to his confession.
Then your phone vibrates.
For a solid 5 second, you and Seulgi are at a stare off before she leaps across the five feet gap between your bed and hers - and in an attempt to shield yourself from a human cannon ball, you try to roll off the bed but alas, the human crashes right into you.
You take a moment to register whether any bones have been dislocated before reaching for your phone which is too late by the way. The damage has been done and as you know it, the blue text on your part has already agreed for another day which is Saturday.
For a moment, you debated correcting your statement by telling him the truth but when his smile flashes at the back of your head, and you decide against cancelling the plan.
-
“You’re choosing a guy over finishing up a paper you need to submit two days from now.” Namjoon states in-a-matter-of-factly.
“Chill, I got like two days more.”
You almost squirm under his scrutiny because he’s the one person who’s been with you through your lowest, been your pillar of strength and sanity when you need a word of advice. The one week he wasn’t here, you almost lost your mind which was the reason you ended up breaking down at the park.
So if there’s anyone who knows you would be freaking out because the date line is nearing, it’s Kim Namjoon, your childhood friend slash study buddy who doesn’t even need to study but waved a dismissive hand at you when you told him he didn’t need to accompany you at the library till it closes almost every night.
“5 years from now, are you going to regret not going on a dinner with some guy or handing in a possibly imperfect paper which you could have perfected and bump your A to an A+ if you didn’t go to the dinner with the guy?”
The paper isn’t written yet but you’re halfway into your research and you can finish up with the important points later after dinner assuming it ends before 10 and your journey would only take about an hour or so to get back. Apparently, it’s transparent that you don’t want the dinner to end early which before you know it, you’ve already gotten the answer to Namjoon’s question.
He shakes his head and packs up his things. You thought he was disappointed at you enough to ignore your presence altogether but he looks at you again and you find yourself holding your breath.
But he doesn’t say anything and you watch as he leaves the library. In that moment, everything comes crashing in - your life plans, your college goals. None of them includes Jungkook but if his inclusion means the distraction of your goals, then, Jeon Jungkook is just an insignificant part of your life.
-
You stop in front of the diner so sure that you value your friendship with Namjoon more than a man you known within just two months. With that, you send Jungkook a text that you’re outside. He struts out in a matching navy blue tuxedo with a black button down underneath, that cute smile on full display. His eyebrows arch when he sees you in an over-sized sweater, shorts and this time, kept hair. You pride would be scarred if you showed up any less presentable than this but you’re here for one reason and that’s to properly tell him you’re not going to entertain him anymore.
“You’re here.” He comes to a stop in front of you but just when he was about to gesture for you to go inside, you speak first.
“Here is fine.”
He accepts your decision with a nod, hands pocketed as though ready for what you’re about to say.
“Did something happen along the way?”
“No, nothing happened.”
The look of relief on his face makes it harder to stand your ground. Showing up severely under dressed to a five star restaurant is already disrespectful as it is but he’s more worried that something might have happened to you that warrants you unable to don a suitable dress for a dinner.
“You must be hungry, let’s sit and talk. At least have some water.” He adds when you’re about to protest.
With the last part, you relent and the dimple smile carves its way to his lips as though your compliance is enough for him.
He places two identical orders and dismisses the other as his extra plate but it would be embarrassing to have two sets of servings for himself. When the food does come, he doesn’t even touch it. In fact, his eyes never left you as though your presence is more appealing than a medium rare steak prepared by a Michelin chef.
“How was your day?”
“Good.” You shrug.
“I’m glad you’re here.”
If the dimple wasn’t enough, you start to wonder if his eyes have always crinkled when he smiles.
“I can’t stay.”
“You never seem to be able to.”
For a split second, his lips are set in a thin line but then he smiles but it’s not the same smile you’ve been receiving until now. It’s the kind of smile that makes you want to take back your hostility and swallow your pride but you wouldn’t be you if you did that so instead you swallowed the water the waiter set aside for you.
“I have assignments to finish and exams to prepare for. I have to go.”
He stands up a second later than you, wiping his mouth with a napkin.
“I’ll send you back, let me settle the bill first.”
The cosmos must have hated you from the moment since you were born and it’s all unraveling right now as you yearningly take a last look at the untouched steak and how much of a waste it was because the extra platter was just a facade because Jeon Jungkook was too nice to let you watch him eat or let you stand outside in the cold while you two talked.
“There’s really no need to send me back, I can walk. The campus is really close.”
He thwarts your last ditch attempt to leave with, “I have something to pass to Sooyoung too. My car’s in the workshop so I’ll walk with you.”
“You just said you were going to send me back which implies you have a car. So it just suddenly transferred itself to a workshop?” You eye him suspiciously and without any effort to hide it, he chuckles, head dropping.
“Yes, if you believe in magic.”
You don’t expect him to entertain questions to an obvious answer the way he always didn’t. It only adds to the feebleness of the whole situation. So you opt to walk in silence and struggle to either remain a step in front or behind from him. If he notices your diligence, he doesn’t mention it until you’re at the Weeping Willow and his fingers suddenly wrap around your wrist.
He takes a step closer and another until you’re only a hair’s breadth away. You’re staring at his eyes and he’s looking at your lips. Just before he kisses you, he pauses and meets your gaze but this time he catches your lingering stare on his lips.
“If you say no now, I’ll leave and I won’t ever show up in your life but if there’s a smidgen of chance that you’re acting like this because you’re not good with handling emotions -”
So you kiss him.
You kiss him with all and every emotion that you have, the butterflies, the zoo, the anxiety, the fear and the excitement.

The Most Magical Place - Chapter Two
a/n: Sorry if this chapter is a bit boring! It’s mostly just the crew getting to Disney. The next chapter they’ll actually go to the parks, promise!
~~~~
“Whose bag is missing? We’re missing a bag!” Thorne called after the kids, trying his best to keep all three in sight.
Cress was packing the last minute essentials with Cassiopeia in her baby carrier, while Thorne was in charge of getting the rest of the suitcases and children together. The Rampion was parked in the airport parking lot, with everything important stashed away as a precaution.
They were almost done, almost ready to board their plane to Orlando. But of course, with four kids, nothing ever went as planned.
“Are we meeting everyone else in the airport or at Disney?” Carson asked, pulling the straps of his backpack over his shoulders. Each of their kids had a small backpack to use as a carry on bag.
“They’ll all be riding the same plane as us, bud. You can sit with Evret and Holly if you want, I’m sure.” When Cress had booked their plane tickets, she’d made sure to get them all seats nearby so they could all talk.
Though Thorne planned to try and sleep. It was 7 o’clock at night, and their flight was at 8. They wouldn’t arrive in Florida until 11, and by the time they got to their hotel it was sure to be midnight or later.
However, judging by the insane amount of energy the twins were experiencing, sleep might not be on the agenda.
“Sage, come get your bag and let’s all get outside!” Thorne called after his youngest son. Sage, who had been blasting ‘Let it go’ from his IPad and dancing on the couch, hopped off to grab the backpack his father offered.
Thorne opened up the door and hauled out his and Cress’s suitcases onto the hard pavement of the parking lot. Their suitcases were so large and full because they not only contained their clothes and toiletries, but Cassie’s as well. The two cases were loaded full of diapers, wipes, and onesies.
Carson pulled his own suitcase out the door of the RV, while Astra and Sage required a bit of help to get theirs down. Thorne poked his head back inside, seeing Cress zip up the last carry on bag, one with baby supplies for Cassie.
Inside his pocket, Thorne’s phone buzzed from the group chat. Cinder and Kai had already gotten through security, since they lived the closest to the airport and arrived first. Now they were in the food court, eating dinner at Taco Bell.
Winter and Jacin texted that they were about to go through security, Winter managing to snap a picture of Luca napping on Jacin’s shoulder. As for Scarlet and Wolf, they were still on the road, and would be at the airport in about 15 minutes.
“Okay, is everyone ready?” Cress asked, threading her fingers with Thorne’s. “You have all the things you need and we won’t have to pay Disney prices for something like a phone charger?”
Carson patted one of the pockets of his backpack. “I put all the chargers right here.”
“Then let’s go!” Thorne chuckled, squeezing his wife’s hand. In her baby carrier, Cassie was watching them all with her wide blue eyes, a green pacifier in her mouth.
Cress carried both her and Cassie’s carry on bags, as well as the stroller. It was made for two kids, because they’d gotten it when the twins were born, but there was no way they were going to rent a stroller every day at Disney World.
The other kids had their backpacks on and rolled their suitcases along the bumpy pavement, talking and giggling with each other. They all reached the bus stop, and thankfully only had to wait a moment for a bus to pull up.
“Where are you all headed?” The driver asked, kindly taking their luggage and putting it inside the bus. Cress and the kids went to sit while Thorne helped him and answered his question.
“Terminal B, thank you.”
“Mama, I’m hungry.” Astra complained, laying her head in Cress’s lap. Cassie kicked her little feet at her older sister, cooing around the pacifier.
“Hang in there, sweetheart. We’ll get dinner before we get on the plane.” Cress assured her.
The bus bumped along, and Carson slouched in his seat while playing a game on his phone, plopping his feet in his father’s lap. Sage leaned against his older brother to watch him play.
When they arrived at their terminal, it was 7:15. If they wanted to eat something before their flight they had to hurry.
Of course things would go wrong.
It took forever for someone to come and check their bags, and it had already taken an extra five minutes because all the machines were taken. When they went through security there were issues regarding whether or not Cassie could be in her carrier or not, and then Carson had forgotten to empty his water bottle in his carry on and had to go through again after getting his whole bag searched.
But they finally tumbled into the main airport at 7:35. Cassie was starting to fuss, getting hungry again. Astra was on the verge of tears, holding onto Thorne’s hand and complaining of hunger.
“Hey, Astra, let’s go get some McDonalds, okay?” Thorne asked his daughter. Sage, who was also dragging his feet, perked up at the mention of McDonalds as well.
“You go get the kids fed, I need to find somewhere to nurse Cassie. Pick me up a burger, please?” Thorne nodded, leaving Cress with a quick kiss.
“Dad we’re gonna be the last ones on the plane.” Carson sighed dramatically. “Everyone else is already there.”
“Scarlet and Wolf aren’t here yet.” Thorne protested, pulling out his phone. He had a bunch of texts from the group again, in which he quickly discovered that somehow Scarlet and Wolf managed to get themselves and five kids through security at the same time as them, without bumping into them. And were now waiting by the gate with the others.
“Hey, they won’t let us on until 8.” Thorne told his son. “And your siblings are hungry. We all need to eat something, bud, we won’t get there until late.”
Carson sighed again, rolling his eyes, but hefted his backpack and followed them to the McDonalds line.
Fifteen minutes later, laden with fast food and carry on bags, they finally made their way to the gate. Cress was already there, letting Cassie finish up nursing while Scarlet cooed over her.
“Astra!” Callen yelled, jumping up from his spot by Wolf’s feet to run and crash into Astra with a hug. Astra squealed happily and dragged her friend to the floor, opening up her bag to show off the toy she’d gotten in her Happy Meal.
“Hello, ladies.” Thorne crooned jokingly, leaning on Cinder’s shoulder.
“Damn, I kinda hoped for a second that Cress had left you here.” Cinder snorted. Peony, who was sitting with Badar in her lap and watching YouTube on her phone, lifted a hand to give him a quick wave.
Thorne plopped down next to his best friend, grinning. “She couldn’t leave me. My face is too pretty.”
He opened up his own meal, passing Cress’s burger down to her. She sent him a grateful look, eating her food with one hand and trying her hardest to not spill anything on the baby.
It seemed like hardly any time had passed before their flight was called, and everyone had to gather their things to get into their boarding groups. Badar, who had been about to fall asleep, started crying at the loud noise, and Kai picked up his son, desperately trying to calm him so they could get on the plane.
“Mommy, BoBo’s so loud!” Luca complained, covering up his ears. Winter pulled the toddler close as they walked to their boarding group, Evret and Veda following.
Thankfully, Cassie didn’t seem too bothered, and the little girl gurgled and kicked her legs happily as Cress carried her over to the rest of their family.
“Group B, boarding now.” The robotic voice sounded over the intercom, and the line moved forward. Carson was hanging back slightly, trying to talk with Holly until the last minute.
They walked down the long tube leading to the plane, Sage and Astra giggling and sprinting up and down while they waited for their parents to get to the plane. When they all reached it, Thorne put his hand on the metal of the plane, feeling the warm hum going through it. Then he stepped inside the plane.
They were really doing this.
Their seats were closer to the back, near the bathrooms, considering they had over a dozen children and at least one of them was going to need the bathroom for their three hour flight. As well, they had gotten seats gathered in a large cluster so they could all talk.
Thorne got the aisle seat of one row, while Wolf and Scarlet took the middle and window. Their triplets had one full row right in front of them so their parents could keep an eye on them.
In the row across from them, Kai, Cinder, and Cress sat, with Cress in the aisle seat holding Cassie. Cassiopeia and Badar were still small enough to share a seat with their mothers, and Thorne sat right across the aisle so the baby could be passed to him if his wife needed a break.
Carson, Holly, and Evret shared a row, as did Shelly, Peony, and Veda. The twins sat behind Thorne with Jacin, while Winter and Luca, who was old enough to have his own seat, sat in a row nearby.
Across the row, Cress handed Cassie her pacifier, so she had something to suck on while the plane lifted off and hopefully wouldn’t have clogged ears. For all the other kids around her, she passed out some chewing gum.
Thorne tucked his carry on bag under his seat, Scarlet and Wolf doing the same and making sure the triplets did, as well. Since it was dark outside, the cabin lights were on, but still dim as people got settled before the plane took off.
“Hello, this is your captain speaking,” A voice sounded over the intercom. “Thank you for choosing this flight this evening to Orlando, Florida, we welcome you aboard.”
Scarlet hushed the triplets in front of them, all of whom were chattering loudly.
“We will be taking off within the next fifteen minutes, so our flight attendants will now come and brief everyone on the safety protocols, and then we’ll be off! I hope you enjoy this three hour flight to Orlando, Florida.”
“Mommy,” Callen hissed through the seat, turning around to glance at his mother, “We’re on the wrong plane. We’re supposed to be going to Disney World.”
“Disney World is in Orlando, buddy.” Wolf whispered back. “Don’t worry, we’re going to the right place. You three should try and get some sleep. It’s going to be very late when we get there.”
“I’m too excited to sleep!” Baylor protested, having heard them. “And Shelly and Holly aren’t sleeping!”
Sure enough, in their nearby rows, both of the older Kesley girls were not asleep, and from the looks of it, wouldn’t be any time soon. Peony had her laptop out with the distinct look of the beginning of a Star Wars movie, and was plugging in a headphones adapter so all three of them in the row could listen.
The flight attendants came and began talking, though it went in one ear and out the other for Thorne. He’d been on enough flights to know the safety instructions nearly by heart, and he had the card in the seat in front of him just in case.
He glanced over at his wife, finding Cress nearly asleep. She had Cassie held close to her chest, the baby snoozing herself while sucking on the pacifier still.
Thorne couldn’t resist and snapped a quick picture on his phone. At the last second he remembered to turn it on airplane mode, and did so before putting it away at the flight attendant’s instructions.
And just like that, the plane was moving, coasting along the runway to get to their takeoff spot. The triplets were nearly bouncing with excitement, having never been on a plane before. Across the aisle, Badar was looking out the window from Kai’s lap, absolutely fascinated.
They coasted along for a few minutes more before the plane finally began to pick up speed. The roaring and rumbling was loud, loud enough that Thorne put in his earbuds in an attempt to drown it out.
But even blasting music couldn’t drown out the excited gasp of the children in front of him as they lifted off the ground.
“Alix, let me look out the window!” Baylor demanded. Her brother said something back that was lost in the roar of the engine, and soon the two of them were squabbling furiously, Callen joining in a moment later.
“You three, knock it off.” Scarlet snapped at the triplets. “I want all of you to take out your blankets and go to sleep.”
“But Mommy-” Alix started to complain, but the five-year-old didn’t even need to see his mother’s face to know she was serious. There was rustling as the three of them pulled their blankets from their carry on bags and got settled, and it was hardly ten minutes later that they were silent,
all three completely passed out.
Content, the plane flying smoothly as they reached their cruising altitude, Thorne was finally able to drift off to sleep himself.
~~~~
Really, Cress supposed, it was a miracle that Cassie even slept on the plane at all. At about three months old, she didn’t sleep through the night yet, but at least she wasn’t a fussy baby, not like Carson and the twins had been.
Still, when the infant woke up, crying pitifully and waking everyone up on the plane, Cress couldn’t hold back the sigh that left her mouth.
It was nearly an hour into the flight, and Cassie had eaten about two hours ago. She shouldn’t have needed to be fed again, but she offered nursing anyway.
Cassie just cried louder.
Her pacifier had fallen to the floor somewhere in the commotion, and Cress hated to turn on the overhead lights and wake everyone up. Kai was asleep with his head on Cinder’s shoulder, Badar curled on his lap and clinging to a blanket.
At least the seatbelt sign was off, and Cress quickly unbuckled and stood up, bouncing the baby in her arms to try and calm her.
“Cress?” Thorne mumbled across the aisle. “Is that Cassie?”
Even half-asleep, he was already reaching for the baby, ready to take her to let Cress get some more rest. She wondered if it was possible to love him even more.
“I think her ears must be clogged. I can’t find her pacifier anywhere.”
He pulled out his earbuds and stood up, gently pulling his daughter from her arms. “Hey, little love. What’s got you so upset?”
Taking advantage of having free hands, Cress quickly grabbed her phone to use the flashlight and ducked to the floor, searching for the missing pacifier.
She found it, rolled beneath Cinder’s foot, a moment later. She quickly wiped it off with a baby wipe (no way she was putting a germy airplane infected pacifier in her infant’s mouth) and gave it back to Thorne.
Instantly, Cassie quieted. The screaming stopped, replaced by a very soft suckling sound as the baby closed her eyes again, content at last.
“I’ll take her for the rest of the flight. Go get some sleep.” Thorne urged her. Cress certainly didn’t need to be told twice.
All three of them settled down into their respective seats, Cress taking out her neck pillow and blanket to curl up with. With how tired she was, it didn’t take long before she was drifting off to sleep.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we are right above the airport in Orlando, Florida, and will begin our descent momentarily. Please make sure your seats are upright and your tray tables closed, and stow away all of your devices and personal items. Thank you for flying with us this lovely evening!”
Cress groaned as the captain’s voice over the intercom dragged her awake. She had half a mind to just go back to sleep, but Cinder was moving next to her, and Badar was fussing loudly in complaint of the noise.
She sluggishly stuffed her blanket and pillow back inside her carry on, while checking the seats in front of her to be sure the kids were doing the same.
A quick glance to her left confirmed that while Thorne was awake, Cassie was not, and still had her pacifier for the descent. As soon as they got to the airport she’d have to feed her and change her diaper.
“Carson, buddy, are you getting your stuff together?” Cress asked her son, peering around the seat. “We’re about to land.”
Carson gave a noise of complaint but started moving, packing up everything he’d taken out before he fell asleep. Holly, who sat next to him, shook Evret awake, and the trio gathered their things and fixed their seats for the landing.
Badar was fully awake now, and the toddler clambered over his parents’ laps to Cress, tugging at her jacket.
“Hey there, sweet boy.” Cress cooed to him. Badar giggled happily before Cinder gently pulled him back to buckle him up with her seatbelt.
She could feel the plane as it began to drop, slowly easing down towards the earth. Thankfully, Cassie remained asleep in her father’s arms, and Cress carefully got to work at putting the baby carrier back on herself.
They landed with a small jolt then rolled along the runway to a stop, prompting a few people to start clapping. Badar, in his mother’s lap, giggled and clapped as well, smacking his fumbling baby hands together.
Slowly, after the last announcements were made, people began to unbuckle their seatbelts and stand up to grab their bags from the overhead. Thorne passed Cassie over and Cress put her in the baby carrier so she could grab her carry on bags.
Being in the back of the plane, they all had to wait a bit longer for more people to get off before they could disembark.
Luca was passed out on his mother’s shoulder, thumb in his mouth. The triplets were still awake, but all three were yawning widely as they squirmed out of their seats. The only ones who were really awake were Peony and Shelly, being the two oldest kids. But even they were lagging, rubbing at their eyes.
Slowly, their large group made their way off the plane. Both Thorne and Kai gathered their strollers right outside the plane, and they loaded them with carry on bags, as both Cassie and Badar were being held by their mothers.
Despite the fact it was 11 o’clock at night, the Orlando airport was bustling, and the baggage claim was crowded. Astra leaned against Cress, nearly asleep on her feet while her father and brothers grabbed their suitcases.
“How long until we get to our hotel?” Sage mumbled tiredly, resting his head on top of his suitcase.
“The bus ride is about 45 minutes.” Thorne replied. “So you all can sleep for a bit.”
When everyone had at last gathered their bags, they all made their way to the buses outside. They were held up for a few minutes, since they all needed to scan their magic bands to get on the bus for the Disney hotel they were staying at, and Shelly had managed to misplace hers. Thankfully, Wolf was able to locate it, and they all loaded their bags and made their way inside the giant bus.
They sat in a fairly similar configuration to what they’d done on the plane. This time, however, Thorne sat with Cress, and Cinder and Kai sat across from them with Badar.
Cress was amazed that Cassie hadn’t had a meltdown yet; it was far past the time she should have been fed. But the baby, while a bit fussy, wasn’t full on screaming yet, which Cress was grateful for. The long bus ride would give her the perfect opportunity to feed her.
All around her, the littles, and even the older kids, were falling asleep rapidly. They hadn’t even left the airport yet, but the twins were both fast asleep, leaning on each other, as were the triplets. Holly was resting her head on Carson’s shoulder, while Carson leaned against the window and Evret leaned against Holly. Luca was passed out on his father’s lap, and even Winter was blinking sleepily.
Eventually, the bus rumbled to life and rolled towards the road. It took everything Cress had to not fall asleep, and instead she subjected herself to watching the repeating video on the screens talking all about Disney Resorts.
Cassie finished eating, and Cress gave her back the pacifier. The bus was the kind with a bathroom in the back, and she carefully made her way over to change the baby’s diaper.
By the time she was finished and back in her seat, the bus was pulling into the first stop, which just happened to be the resort they were all staying at.
Cress nudged her husband awake, and slowly they managed to get all their kids up and moving off the bus. Thorne was carrying Astra, despite the fact that she was six years old and perfectly capable of walking by herself.
After their entire group was off the bus and standing in the lobby of the resort, Cress took a quick head count, just to be safe.
Four Thorne children, accounted for. The Kesley triplets, Peony and Shelly standing together, Holly and Evret right next to Winter and Jacin, who had Luca. Veda was by Cinder, who had Badar, and Kai was with Wolf and Scarlet. Fourteen kids and eight adults, all accounted for.
Despite having fourteen children, the walk inside was nearly silent, save for the quiet chattering of the two eldest girls. Cress, having gotten barely any sleep on the plane and no sleep on the bus, was practically dead on her feet.
“Hello!” The employee chirped brightly, despite it being nearly midnight. “Are you all looking for your rooms?”
After a bit of shuffling and sorting of children and luggage, everyone got their room numbers and were led out of the lobby and towards the actual hotel part of the resort.
The walk wasn’t too long, but in the darkness of the night it felt like ages. Cassie began to fuss, and by the time they located their room the baby was screaming loudly.
“Mommy, make her stop.” Sage whined, covering his ears while Thorne unlocked the door.
“I’m sorry, buddy. Let’s get inside and get settled so we can see what’s making her cry.” Cress pulled her suitcase in through the door and flipped on the light switch.
The room was fairly small, with only two beds. There was a small couch against one wall, and it was supposed to fold out into a bed. After a bit more examination, they discovered that the bathroom was tiny as well, with just a toilet and a shower, and the sinks being on one end of the room.
The kids all shoved their suitcases and bags against the walls, save for Astra, who was either fast asleep or very good at faking it. Thorne gently laid her down on one of the beds, and her twin flopped down next to her.
Carson took a minute to find some pajamas and his toothbrush, and got himself ready for bed while Thorne set up Cassie’s pack-n-play. Cress took the baby out of her carrier and checked her diaper, (clean, thankfully) then settled for just bouncing her until she quieted.
“Sage, Astra. I need you two to get on some pajamas.” Cress prompted the twins. Astra gave a loud groan of protest in response.
“Listen to your mother.” Thorne told them. Sage mumbled something under his breath and slid off the bed, trudging towards his suitcase.
About twenty minutes later, the three older kids were in pajamas with their teeth brushed, and getting tucked into bed. It had taken a few minutes to find the sheets for the pull out bed that Carson was sleeping on, but they’d eventually found them tucked away on a shelf. Cassie was already fast asleep, absolutely worn out from the day’s travels.
“Sleep well.” Cress smiled, giving the twins each a small kiss on their head. Thorne did so as well, making sure the kids were tucked up and cozy in their hotel-style bed.
“What time do we have to be up tomorrow?” Carson asked sleepily. The twelve-year-old boy was laying on his bed, wrapped up in the galaxy-patterned blanket he’d brought with him.
“Our first FastPass is at 9:30 for Spaceship Earth, and the park opens at 9:00.” Thorne told him. “So I think we’ll be up around 8:00 and we’ll be good.”
Carson nodded and rolled over with a yawn. “Okay. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight, buddy.” Thorne said with a smile.
With the kids all asleep, Cress and Thorne got themselves ready for bed as well. As they settled into their bed, Cress couldn’t resist and took one last look at her phone before Thorne turned the lights off.
In their group text, the other couples had sent photos of the kids they’d taken throughout the day.
Peony sharing her chips with Badar. The triplets watching a movie together while waiting for the plane. Luca asleep in Jacin’s arms on the bus. Shelly and Holly wearing Disney themed pajamas, curled on their bed together. Peony cuddling with her baby brother in her sleep.
Cress snapped a quick picture of all the kids fast asleep in their room and sent it to the group, then finally turned off her phone and plugged it in.
Thorne wrapped his arms around her, and Cress relaxed into his embrace, ready to finally sleep after a long day, and even more ready to wake up in the morning to their first day at Disney World.

when your beloved jeep breaks down, you have no choice but to take it to a mechanic for once instead of trying to fix it yourself. you fully expected to empty your wallet or get told to just buy a new car. you don’t expect to meet kim namjoon, nor do you expect him to be hot like burning, sweet as honey, and interested in you.

You groan, for possibly the millionth time that afternoon, as your jeep sputters to a halt once more. You’ve had JeepJeep since you first got your license, a gift from your parents since they were getting a new car anyway. Held together with duct tape, prayers, and more than one swift kick to the bumper, the thing has gotten you through your entire school career and then into the big wide world of adulthood.
Now, as you sit in the nearly-empty lot of a mechanic, not even properly parked because your jeep died not two seconds after you pulled in, you feel like crying. Fixing this will cost everything you have. There is no doubt in your mind that this is going to be expensive. Probably expensive enough to wipe out what little you still have in your bank account after grocery shopping yesterday, if you aren’t forced to dip into the meager savings you have put back.
With a resigned sigh, you pop off a quick text to your best friend, heave yourself out of the jeep, and head through the open garage door. There’s a couple of cars up on lifts, parts strewn around them haphazardly, and faint music thrumming from somewhere, but you don’t see any actual people around.
“Hello?” You call hesitantly into the large room. There’s no response, which irritates you a little. First your jeep dies - possibly for the last time, not that you want to think about that right now, keep hoping, you remind yourself - and then you spend four hours getting ten miles to the closest mechanic so you didn’t have to pay for a tow only for there to be no one fucking here.
“Fuck this,” You tell yourself, sidestepping what looks like a car battery, and make your way further into the building. Music is still vibrating through your bones, there has to be someone in this rusty old shop somewhere, and you are on a mission, dammit. JeepJeep requires immediate attention, especially if you want to get home at any kind of decent time tonight.
The shop, you discover as you follow the sound of deep bass, is a minefield. There’s a truly ridiculous number of parts and tools you couldn’t name even if you wanted, all of them just thrown about like a four-year-old’s discarded toy. You think you may see a chainsaw in the corner and for the first time, you wonder if wandering around a potentially-abandoned-but-possibly-still-inhabited auto shop alone is a good idea. Do it for JeepJeep, you tell yourself, steeling yourself as you pass the Maybe A Chainsaw. Light gleams off grimy windows just past it, and the music seems to be coming from there. You give the tools - and the possible murder weapon - a wide berth, making your way to the lone door that you see. It’s nearly impossible to see through the windows of what looks to be the office, but the door itself is open, a lone figure sitting at a desk inside.
You knock gently against the open door and plant a friendly smile on your face. “Hi, sorry to bother you, my car died and I was just wondering if you could take a look at it?” The words rush out before the person - a guy, you belatedly notice - can tell you to get lost. When he spins around in the chair, your breath catches in your throat and you think you may actually physically choke.
He’s honestly gorgeous. Like…the hottest person on the face of the planet, gorgeous. Warm eyes blown wide with surprise and framed by strong dark brows, a jawline that makes you wonder why he needs the chainsaw lying around, bleach-blonde hair hidden away under a dark blue cap that matches the jumpsuit hanging around his waist revealing the most beautiful sight of that chest in just the white tee with grease stains that shouldn’t be so attractive. It’s all beautiful, but what gets the heat pooling between your legs is the sight of the long fingers. They aren’t even doing anything erotic, just wrapped around a thick book and a pen, clearly having been in the middle of writing something when you interrupted.
“Sorry,” He says quickly, fingers reaching out to slide over a button somewhere. The music softens, no longer shaking your bones, but that only makes you more aware of how hard your heart is beating. “I thought I had the closed sign on the door, I must have forgotten. You said your car died?”
It takes you a second to find words, and you’re grateful when he doesn’t judge. “Yes,” You say, filling your voice with the confidence you usually save for unruly customers at work, “Yes, my jeep. It’s out front, I just kind of left it since it wouldn’t start back up again. I really just need someone to take a look at it and tell me what to tape together so it’ll run again.”
He laughs, soft and sweet, and you never want to hear another sound in your life, but he sets the pen and the book to the side and stands. “I can certainly try,” The guy says, waving for you to follow him out to the lot.
You do, though it becomes quickly apparent that the wide berth you gave the chainsaw should have been saved for this walking hurricane. He manages to run into or knock over nearly everything on the way out, barrelling through areas you’d avoided due to clutter and just sliding things out of the way for you. He’s got a pretty blush on his cheeks when you finally emerge into the waning sunlight, and it warms you more than you expected. You’ve never seen someone so clumsy be so damned endearing.
“So, what exactly has been going on with your jeep?” He asks. You give him a brief rundown of all the things that have been patched in the years you’ve had your darling vehicle and go into more detail about the chinkchinkchunk sound it made right before it died in the middle of the turn lane outside the store where you worked. He tells you to pop the hood and you do. You don’t even take offense to the choking noise he gives upon seeing what’s left of the engine block and the several rolls of tape holding everything together. He manages to cover it with a cough, but you know what your engine looks like, and have no illusions about the disaster it must be to a mechanic.
“Uh…no offense, but I’m honestly a little surprised that it ran at all,” His voice echoes as you exit the car and come to stand by him. He scratches at his jaw, leaving a small trail of grease behind that your fingers itch to wipe off. You startle a little as he makes eye contact, but you can’t help but return the soft, shy smile that he wears. “I can definitely try, we’ll get her up on a lift to take a better look at everything, but I can’t make any promises. Uh…hold on, let me-” He stops and pats at his clothes before he turns, jogging into the garage once more.
You sigh a little as you turn to look back at JeepJeep’s engine, patting the side lightly. There are so many memories in this jeep, you don’t want to go buy a new car, nevermind that you can’t even afford it. Just a quick look and you can see where you hot-glued two of the tubes back together when they split outside your school, where you had to tape a belt back into one piece on the side of a highway at 3 a.m. with an ex-boyfriend holding the flashlight, the time you got stuck outside a McDonald’s and had to use no less than a hundred straws and four rolls of tape to form a funnel so your coolant could fill enough to get the thing home without catching fire. And that's just the engine, there are so many more things that happened in this jeep, so many memories and milestones that you don’t want to end up in a junkyard somewhere.
A loud crash from inside the garage breaks you from your thoughts, and you start to get worried by the suspicious silence that follows it. You wait a few moments, but there’s just a deafening silence hanging in the air. It takes a second but eventually you decide you cannot in good conscience wait by your dead jeep while this random, insanely hot mechanic bleeds out under some Honda. It’s just as you step forward that said mechanic stumbles out of the garage, clipboard in one oil-smeared hand while his other massages a spot on his (incredibly strong looking, holy shit) thigh.
He lights up when he sees you still there, as if he thought you would leave while he was gone. Your heart skips a beat at the thought.
“Okay so! Just fill out some quick information for me here, as best you can,” He hands you the clipboard and a pen and you dutifully start writing down your name, number, and information about JeepJeep. “As I said, we can’t guarantee we can fix…all of this, but we’ll do our best. The diagnostic will help figure out everything that’s really important to get her up and running, so we’ll do that first thing, and then call you with an estimate for labor and parts.”
“That sounds perfect, thank you so much,” You reply, truly grateful. Every other mechanic you’ve been to in the last two years had taken one look and immediately written the thing off as a lost cause. It’s touching to know this guy was at least going to try. You hand the papers back with a smile, ignoring the slight flush that comes over you when you look up to see him already looking at you. He turns a pretty shade of pink and averts his eyes.
“So, all I need now is your car key, if you don’t mind.” He says. You hurry to comply, sliding it off your keyring just as a horn honks behind you. You turn to see Taehyung’s car idling just outside the lot, the man himself waving at you before settling in. He's entirely too accustomed to this routine, and you decide to buy him some noodles soon to pay him back.
The sound of your name coming from the mechanic’s lips has you turning around, pink-cheeked, and you give an embarrassed smile. “Yep, that’s me,” You joke. “I gotta go, but take care of her…?” You trail off, never having gotten the guy’s name.
“Namjoon,” He says quickly, almost dropping the clipboard in his haste to pull his jumpsuit up and show you the name stitched into it. “Kim Namjoon. I’ll take care of her, don’t worry. We’ll call you soon.” His smile is blinding, and you want to dive in headfirst to the dimples that appear but Taehyung’s horn beeps before you can.
“Thank you again, Namjoon, so much,” You say as you grab your bag from the passenger’s side of your jeep and hurry off to slide in beside Taehyung, who immediately starts whining about how his own shift at work had gone.
You can’t stop yourself from looking out the side mirror as Namjoon’s image gets smaller and smaller, and you find yourself looking forward to when you'll see him again.
Tumblr media
As it turned out, that would be much sooner than you originally thought. The shop calls you the very next day, a very bubbly sounding guy who introduces himself as Hoseok telling you that it won’t be nearly as expensive as you first thought and that though it'll take a week or two, they have faith that they can get JeepJeep running again.
You could cry, you'e so relieved. How they’re going to do such a thing is a mystery to you, especially for such a cheap price, but you aren’t one to look a gift horse in the mouth. Any other shop in town would’ve been sure to charge you out the ass for such a thing, and your bank account would never have been able to recover from such a hefty price tag. You would’ve paid it, of course, because JeepJeep is everything to you, but you would’ve been back to your diet of instant noodles for a while if you had.
You can’t help but wonder if this is normal for their garage, or if it's a special case. As much as you want to think that it's because Namjoon is interested in the same way you are, it’s more likely whoever runs the place took one look at your heap of wishes and hushed prayers and was intrigued at the challenge of fixing such a piece of junk. Or that they were just cheaper in an attempt to poach business from other shops, because if they do manage to fix JeepJeep then you’re never going to another mechanic again in your life. Especially if Namjoon keeps working there, because that man-
You force the thought out of your mind, focusing instead on the work ahead of you.
Tumblr media
You last four days. Four whole days before you finally cave and go to see how your jeep is doing without your loving kick to the rear and possibly also catch a glimpse of Namjoon while there. Taehyung applauded you on your restraint, though it was somewhat sarcastic, but you honestly don’t care. You love that jeep and you have to know if it’s in pieces or if they’re actually fixing it. Taehyung had no idea what he was talking about when he asked dryly why you’re wearing the shorts that cling in all the right places and the top that highlights your chest in all the ways you love just to go check on a jeep.
You mentally rescind your earlier note to buy him noodles as you make your way to the garage.
What you’re expecting to find at the shop, you aren’t entirely sure. In the deepest part of your heart, you want to see JeepJeep looking shiny and new and running perfectly already, but you are fully aware of how unlikely that is. You’re already getting a miracle, you don’t need to tempt fate. Still, the idea has planted itself so firmly in your mind that walking up to the shop at three in the afternoon and seeing your precious baby up on a lift with the parts you’d lovingly taped or glued back together thrown to the side in a haphazard pile almost brings tears to your eyes.
Indeed, it likely would have, had you not immediately heard a beautifully rumbling voice barking orders.
You step forward again and contain your surprise at how different the garage looks when it’s full of people. At first glance, you don’t see him, but after getting close enough to stand right at the edge of the open garage door, you spot him. You expect the rush of blood to your face, but you don’t expect the way your knees go wobbly and the sudden flip of your stomach.
If you thought he looked good the first time you met, it was nothing compared to now. The jumpsuit is buttoned halfway up his chest, giving the slightest peek to the white shirt underneath. The long sleeves running down his arms are pushed up to his elbows, which only highlights the way the material hangs off his biceps and complements the tan of his forearms. He still has that blue cap on, but the shy smile is gone, as is the pretty redness on his cheeks. He looks much more serious now, barking orders out to a couple of his coworkers as he looks up from the heavy book in his hands to the undercarriage of your jeep. The lid of a highlighter is stuck in the corner of his mouth, and his brows are drawn together in complete focus.
As you watch, doing your very best to not think about how absolutely hot like burning this guy is, he calls another guy over. The new guy is pretty, too, as they all seem to be, but nothing can outshine the sight of Namjoon, serious and laser-focused as he gestures to parts of your jeep and then to the heap of parts they’d removed, circling a couple of things with the highlighter. He speaks quietly to the other guy, who nods and also looks up at your jeep before disappearing down a set of stairs you hadn’t noticed before.
You’re not to be mistaken; you’re a strong, independent young woman, and you have no need to have a man around to tell you how to live or what decisions to make. But seeing Namjoon, looking like that, barking orders at people…well, you’ve always had a thing for authoritative men, and now you can’t help but wonder just how it would feel to be on the receiving end of Namjoon’s no-nonsense attitude. Him telling you to drop to your knees in such a firm voice, leaving no question that he was to be obeyed, and running one of those long fingers along the column of your throat before wrapping his whole hand around it and giving just enough pressure to make your head spin before he slides his-
“Can I help you?” A voice calls, and you just barely catch yourself before actually jumping in shock. Turning to find a third guy - also gorgeous, what is it with this place? - you plaster a smile on your face.
“Yes, hi!” You say quickly, hoping the redness on your face can be attributed to the afternoon sun and not the very lewd thoughts you were just lost in. “This is my jeep, I was just coming by to see how things are going.” It occurs to you halfway through the sentence that it might not be considered normal to check in on a vehicle and perhaps you should have readied a better reason.
The guy - Jungkook, by the name stitched into his plain grey tee - just nods, though, and gives you a quick once-over before turning. “Hey, hyung!” Nearly everyone in the garage turns except for a couple of people, but Jungkook makes instant eye contact with Namjoon. You only barely register the vague wave that Jungkook gives you, and you can’t hear whatever he says next past the rush of blood in your ears, because holy shit. The focused gaze was powerful enough to make your knees weak before, but having it leveled straight on you is another thing entirely. Your stomach is in knots and you honestly think you may just collapse right there and then, just from the sheer power that Namjoon radiates. You’re so focused on him that it’s impossible to miss the way his eyes rake up your form, lingering on every curve and leaving a heat behind that you hadn’t felt in much too long.
You give a shy wave and can see the moment he snaps out of whatever he’s thinking. He takes a breath and tries to speak at the same time, which mostly just results in him nearly swallowing the highlighter cap. You stifle a laugh as he spits it out and caps the marker, stuffing it in his pocket as he makes his way over. There’s a clear path to the lot that you have a sneaking suspicion is there entirely because of his penchant for disaster, and you meet him at the entrance. He’s got a wide smile on his face, yet again showcasing his dimples, and you find yourself returning the smile before you can stop yourself.
“I just came to check on JeepJeep,” You say before you can actually tell him how you think he’s the most beautiful man you’ve ever seen in your entire life. “I’m a little attached, and I wanted to be sure you all didn’t need any other information or anything like that.”
“Ah, well, we’re actually doing alright with her. We stripped out everything that needed to be replaced,” He points to the pile of parts you’re intimately familiar with, “And now it’s just a matter of putting in the new ones and making sure there isn’t anything else going on. We’re gonna go ahead and do an oil change, fill your coolant, and clean all the parts that didn’t need to be stripped, so she should be almost good as new when we get her back together.” Your heart swells at the news, and you beam at him.
“You have no idea how much this means to me, Namjoon,” You tell him. He turns slightly pink and rubs the back of his neck, ducking his head. “Seriously, I never expected you to do so much for me. Anyone else would have just written her off and told me to go buy a new one. Are you sure you’re charging enough? It seems like a lot more work than I’m actually paying for.”
Namjoon just waves a hand, looking up at the jeep. “No, it’s the least I can do. Your Jeep really isn’t in terrible condition, just a lot of wear and tear, and it’s so obvious that you love it. What kind of mechanic am I if I turn down something like this?” He goes quiet, and you can feel him looking at you even as you watch several men hand parts back and forth.
You’re both quiet for a long while. You aren’t sure what’s going through his head, but you’re hoping that eventually, he’ll say something else to keep the conversation going.
“Well, I’ve got to get going soon, I’ve got a meeting in about an hour,” You say eventually, resigned to the fact that Namjoon isn’t as interested as you thought he might be.
“Oh, yeah, of course, don’t let me keep you,” He says quickly. Your heart sinks as you give him a smile and wave. You’re halfway to the sidewalk when he calls your name, and you turn to see him jogging after you. He’s got a white-knuckle grip on the book in his hands but his voice is steady.
“If you really want to pay me back, let me take you out to dinner,” he says. “Friday night at seven.”
The confidence in his tone surprises you, but not in a bad way. Your first instinct is to immediately agree, but the memory of that blush from four days ago has you biting your lip. You want to see it again, and you wonder how far you have to push him to bring it out.
“I dunno,” You say teasingly. “Just a dinner? That doesn’t really feel like I’m paying you back much, honestly. Shouldn’t there be more of a…I don’t know, a give and take?”
Something sparks in the mechanic’s eyes. Namjoon steps closer to you and traces the curve of your wrist with one finger. Your skin burns where he touches it, and your breath catches in your throat. “Friday at seven,” He says. His voice is low and lingering and you can feel it deep through your skin and sink into your bones. “Have dinner with me, and then we’ll see just how much give you can take.”
You clench your teeth again the urge to whimper as he slides your arm forward and uses a marker to write something on your arm. He backs up after he’s finished, a cocky smirk coming over his features that makes you want to bring him to his knees and drop to your own in equal measure. He presses a light kiss to your knuckles before he drops your hand entirely.
“Text me your address, I’ll pick you up,” He tells you as he disappears into the garage once more, barking for someone named Jimin to get off his ass and keep cleaning parts. You stand there for another few moments until you’re sure you can walk without tripping over your own feet. When you finally are able to breathe once more, you book it out of the lot and down the street. It takes ten minutes to realize you walked in the complete opposite direction from where you’re supposed to be meeting your friends for a late lunch.
Tumblr media
Friday night comes with nervousness that you haven’t felt in a long time. With every one of the last few dates you’ve been on, you’d been the one to pursue things. You asked out the last three dates you’d been on, and the last time you’d gotten laid - months ago, unfortunately, which could explain the very visceral reaction you had to Namjoon - had been because you’d approached the most attractive guy you’d seen at the bar and blatantly asked him if he wanted to go home with you that night. It’s been a while since anyone bothered to chase you, and the fluttering in your chest just reminds you of how much you really do love it.
You’re wearing your favorite date outfit, a cute ruffled top with an A-line skirt that grazed the tops of your knees, and a pair of truly adorable flats that you got for 75% off the last time you went shopping. You’ve put more effort into your hair and face than you had in a while, making sure everything is the best it could possibly be for your date.
A knock on your door at exactly 7 o'clock has you grinning and rushing to grab your clutch. After you make sure you have everything you needed - phone, keys, wallet, condoms, as usual - you open the door. The sight that greets you has you almost wishing you’d offered to cook just so you could keep him locked inside.
You’ve only ever seen Namjoon in his work clothes, and whatever you expected his style to be, it wasn’t this. A gorgeous seafoam button-up tucked into white pants and his hair styled so well you aren’t sure why he wears a hat ever. None of it compares to the beaming grin he’s giving you, though, dimples on full display as he looks you up and down.
“You look amazing,” He says as he takes your hand and presses a soft kiss to your knuckles. “Really, I’m…I can’t believe I get to take you to dinner.”
“Well, you’d best believe it,” You tease. “I don’t get this dolled up for just anyone.” You turn to lock the door behind you, glad for the millionth time that you were lucky enough to find a good townhouse that wasn’t wildly out of your price range. He laces his fingers with yours and guides you to the street where he’s parked.
“There’s a pretty nice place close to the shop that isn’t too fancy or anything, if that works?” He tells you. His brow furrows and he bites at his lip just slightly, and you melt a little. “I wasn’t really sure what you liked, and it’s got a bit of everything, and it isn’t that super stuffy atmosphere, so I thought it would still be casual enough for us to be relaxed and talk, but if you’d like, we can go somewhere else, it really isn’t a big deal so-”
“Namjoon,” You stop him and squeeze his hand a little. “That sounds lovely.” He smiles at the same time you do, relief clear on his face as he relaxes slightly beside you. When you reach his car - a nice, obviously well-kept model you don’t recognize - he opens the door for you to slide in. Within minutes, you’re shooting off into the fading sunlight. There’s soft music playing - some old-school American hip hop you’ve never heard - and Namjoon is tapping his fingers on the steering wheel to the beat. He looks effortlessly attractive, one hand on the gearshift and the other on the wheel, and it makes heat pool between your thighs. You rub them together just barely, trying your best to soothe the ache; the night has just begun, and at this rate, you’ll be a sopping mess before you even order your food.
Namjoon’s voice brings you out of your thoughts, and as you turn to look at him, you realize he’s not actually speaking to you, but instead quietly rapping along with a new song that’s playing. Your brows shoot up and you grin.
“I didn’t know you could rap,” You say, delighted. Namjoon turns slightly pink and his grip on the wheel tightens a little.
“Ah, yeah, it’s just…a hobby, I guess.” He says. There’s a shyness, a humility, that makes an emotion swell in you that you can’t name. It almost seems like he doesn’t think he’s very good, and you decide then that you’re going to show him he is.
“You’re good,” You tell him, and he shoots you a disbelieving look. “No, really, you are. Do more, c'mon, I wanna hear you.” You reach for the stereo and turn the volume up so that it throbs through your chest, and then turn to him expectantly. He looks away as best he can while driving, scratching at the back of his neck as he starts to quietly rap along. It takes a minute, but he gets louder, more confident, and the excitement in your belly only grows.
“That is so sexy,” You say under your breath. You don’t expect him to respond, but the flush on his cheeks tells you he definitely heard you. He glances at you, curious and searching, and before you can ask why, his hand is settling hesitantly on your thigh.
It’s an innocent gesture, he doesn’t tease you or anything you could expect; he just leaves it there. The heat from his palm is scorching through the material of your skirt, and you catch yourself daydreaming several times about what exactly that hand could be doing to you. The rest of the drive is spent with the two of you talking about what music you listen to and your favorite artists, yet you find it impossible to completely focus on what you tell him. The weight of his hand on your thigh is too distracting.
Get it together, he isn’t even touching your skin, you tell yourself as he finally parks and rushes around to open your door for you. You beam at him in thanks and take his hand when he offers it. Together, you walk into a cute restaurant, already filled with people. You’re worried you won’t be able to get a table, and you start to voice your concern, but Namjoon just holds a single finger up and flags down the host.
“Reservation for two, Kim Namjoon,” He says easily, as if he dined at restaurants that required reservations every night. The host is quick to lead the two of you to a table in the far corner by a window, giving you an excellent view of the street. You can’t help but rake your eyes over Namjoom as he pulls your chair out for you and then takes his own seat. The light is soft and complimenting, making him almost seem to glow with obvious happiness as he perused the menu.
You do the same and find that several dishes look appetizing. You’ve just said as much to Namjoon, who agrees, when you notice the print at the bottom of the menu stating that this is apparently a Michelin-rated restaurant, and with a quick review, you’re shocked to find that there aren’t even prices listed on the menu. Your eyes shoot up to Namjoon, but he’s completely focused on his own menu, lost in the decision as he debates aloud what to get.
“Namjoon,” You say after a second. He looks up, eyes shining in the light, and smiles at you. “Not to be ungrateful, but you know you could’ve taken me somewhere else?”
He frowns, looking around. “If you don’t like it, we can leave,” He says quickly, and is clearly about to stand when you stop him with a hand on his wrist.
“No, it’s not that, this place is lovely, and the food looks delicious, I just…” You trail off, unsure how to verbalize the emotions swirling in your chest. “This is just a lot more than what a lot of guys would do for a first date.”
“Then I pity their dates,” He says without hesitation. He twists his wrist to catch your fingers in his and run his thumb along the back of your hand. “I want to treat you the way you deserve. If you want to leave and go somewhere else, we can. But I asked you out because I want to treat you, and this is how you deserve to be treated.” His expression is soft and earnest and the complete honesty in his words has you floored.
“Okay,” You say softly. “If you’re sure.”
“I am,” He says firmly. He keeps his hand on yours as the server comes, and Namjoon proceeds to order each dish you’d mentioned an interest in, silencing your protests with a single hard look that has your legs shaking. The waiter disappears, and you force yourself to relax. Even if whatever this is doesn’t go anywhere, you’re getting excellent conversation and Michelin-rated food. Like you would turn that down.
As the food appears, the two of you settle into a rhythm of conversation. You learn that he’s only at the garage part-time, the rest of his days spent pursuing one Master’s degree in Business and a second in Engineering and that while he originally interviewed at several other auto shops, none would hire him because they were so worried about his knack for destroying things around him. You tell him about how you got your jeep, how it got you through a Bachelor’s degree that you haven’t been able to put to use yet and a job that sucks most days but pays the bills well enough that you can still afford your Netflix account. Namjoon is ridiculously easy to talk to, so much so that by the time you’re digging into a fruit custard pastry dessert, it feels like you’ve known him your entire life. By the time you get back to your apartment and he’s walking you to your door, you can hardly believe you’ve only known him a week.
“So tell me,” You finally say as you stand in front of your door, key in hand. “How does a mechanic that’s studying for two Master’s degrees afford a restaurant like that? And you have to tell me, no backing out. I told you about the Great Flubber Incident of 2014, you owe me. Just don’t tell me you’re secretly a mafia lord or something.”
He laughs, and you memorize the sound. “No, it’s nothing like that. I’m just lucky, honestly. My parents were fairly well off and set up a trust when I was born so they put back a bunch of money for me my entire childhood, but then when I went to school, they were supportive and weirdly excited, so they’re covering all those expenses as well. The garage pays really well, and I split costs with my roommate at home, so that trust has mostly just been gathering dust. I like to bring it out every so often, just to treat myself and my friends.” He smiles, lacing his fingers with yours once more. “And really beautiful girls with remarkably awful jeeps that are somehow interested in going out with me.”
You can feel your cheeks turning pink even as you grin and step closer to him. “Well, I have to say, the whole ‘humble and clumsy yet gorgeous mechanic with a heart of gold’ thing is really working for me.”
“Oh, is that right?”
“Mhm.” You tug gently at his hands and he lets you pull him closer until you can slide your hands up his arms to rest on his shoulders. His arms automatically wrap around your waist, hands lingering innocently on your lower back. “I have to admit, though, you gave me a really good first date. I just expected there to be more of a take.” You chance a look up at him and delight in the way his pupils are dilated and slightly hazy.
“I’ll have to make a note of that for next time,” He says. You cock an eyebrow and you don’t miss the way his tongue darts out to wet his lips.
“You seem confident that there’ll be a next time,” You tease. His hands slide to grip your hips, tight and unyielding, and your breath catches in your throat.
“There will be,” He says. His nose is brushing yours, and you aren’t even sure when he got so close, but you know you want him to get even closer. The heat between your thighs is enough to make your legs weak, and it only worsens as he reaches up and glides his hand along your cheek and neck. “I’ll make sure of that.”
“Will you please just kiss me, Joon, before my neighbors can come out and comp-” He does, then, cutting you off in the middle of your sentence and you can’t even remember what you were going to say because his lips are so soft and they’re moving against yours so perfectly that you can feel your actual soul expanding and filling every inch of your being. His hand slides to cup your cheek, tilting you so he can deepen the kiss and slide his tongue along yours, and his grip on your hip tightens so hard that you know you’re going to have bruises the next morning and you relish in the thought.
Your own hands are busy exploring; they slide up to grip Namjoon’s biceps - firm and strong and you want to bite it - before moving to feel along his chest, finally getting to touch the muscles that you know are there. You whimper slightly as your fingers dip along the edges of his pecs, and your legs are threatening to give out completely.
Namjoon kisses you like he won’t get to do so ever again; it’s sweet and exciting and hesitant and dominating all at once, much like Namjoon himself, and your skin feels like it’s going to melt off your bones if he doesn’t run his hands over it, and you don’t ever want this moment to stop because your heart is beating out of your chest and your stomach is doing somersaults but your head is spinning and you also need to unlock your door if you want to get him in your bed, but you can’t feel your keys in your hand anymore and you don’t even know when you dropped them.
Eventually, he pulls away, eyes still closed as he leans his forehead against yours and just breathes. His chest is heaving in time with yours and you can feel his hands trembling slightly where they rest against your cheek, and you want to kiss him until they’re steady again but you also have a sneaking suspicion that it would be counter-productive.
“I really should get going,” He whispers, and he winces like he can feel your heart drop to your feet. “I know, but I have to open the shop in the morning, and I wanna get there early to finish a project.” The grimace on his face is more than enough to tell you that he wants to leave just as much as you want him to - which is to say, not at all, you’re almost to the point where you’d like him to come in and then never leave again. Nevertheless, you know the pain of opening shifts and deadlines, so you force yourself to nod.
“I get it,” You tell him, though neither of you has made any move to let go of the other. “I’ve got work tomorrow anyway,” true, though not until the afternoon, “And my apartment could use a clean,” false, you cleaned it that day so it was perfect if he happened to come in, “And…and your job is important.”
He sighs, grip tightening once more before he takes a single step back. He bends down to grab your dropped keys and slides them into your still-somewhat shaky hand.
“Text me?” He says, and his voice is hushed and tentative. You wonder if he expects you to say no.
“Like you can ever stop me now,” You reply with a grin, leaning forward to press a chaste kiss to his cheek. He grins and this time you don’t hesitate to poke at the dimples that appear.
“I’ll see ya,” He says with a grin as he presses one last kiss to your hand before turning and heading back to his car. There’s a lightness in his steps, and even from here you can see his grin.
“See ya,” You call into the night before heading into your apartment.
Tumblr media
That one date quickly turns into two which turns into three which turns into so many you can’t count. It seems like every time you both have time off that overlaps, you’re out. Movies, dinner, an afternoon at a museum exhibit, even a picnic by the river. It’s wonderful and your heart flutters with joy every time you think about it, and even Taehyung had commented about how happy you seemed recently. You kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, but the worst thing that happened was that they had to wait for a part to come in to finish fixing JeepJeep, and that couldn’t be helped. Namjoon was even paying out of pocket to get it expedited, despite your protests that he didn’t have to and that you’d be happy to pay for it yourself.
Still, as adamant that Namjoon was that he treat you at every turn, you had your own plans. You’d paid for several meals before he had the chance, bought him more than one gift that made his eyes crinkle in delight, and frequently brought him dinner on nights where he worked late.
This was one such night. Bag of takeout in hand as you walk the short distance from the bus stop to the garage, you can see the light inside even from here. The music can be heard even as you step into the lot, a thudding bass that drowns out all other noise around it - not that there’s anything nearby open at this time of night. You can just barely see Namjoon’s legs sticking out from under the back of some Kia, and you hear him muttering along to the song playing. He’s the last one here, as you’ve discovered is the usual schedule in the garage; it gave him a multitude of time to work and study, and he seemed to prefer it when no one was around. The garage was warm inside, a combination of heating and the industrial lights that kept everything blazing, but tonight you were grateful for it; the cool breeze of the afternoon was just starting to turn that bit too chilly, and the sundress you’d put on earlier was just shy of being warm.
“Hey,” You call, “I brought you some dinner. You wanna eat in the office?” He rolls out from under the Kia, and as usual, you’re floored by just how sexy he looks in his work uniform. Jumpsuit rolled down to his hips to combat the heat in the garage, white tee sticking to his chest and highlighting the muscles that make you drool, the cap on and turned backwards so the oil and gunk doesn’t get in his hair. He gives you a dimpled smile as he stands and wipes his hands on a nearby rag.
“Nah, we can eat out here, give me a second to wash my hands.” He disappears into an employees-only area, and you can hear the faint sound of water running as you pull over a couple of stools and get the food set up on one of the workbenches. Namjoon reappears, drying his hands on a clean rag that he tucks into the waistband of his uniform. “I actually have a surprise for you,” He says as he sits.
“Oh really?” Your mouth is stuffed full of chicken, and he laughs at the sight. You make a face at him before swallowing. “What surprise?”
“It wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you ahead of time, would it?” He makes a face in return and digs into his own food. You huff a little; you’ve never been very good at being patient, especially when you know you’re getting a present. You were notorious for sneaking into Christmas presents early, to the point where your parents started keeping them at your grandparents’ house to keep you from breaking into them.
The two of you eat in relative silence, only broken by the occasional anecdote of your day. When the food is finished, you both clean up the trash and Namjoon stretches as he leans back against the workbench. The position highlights his body and you can’t help yourself wondering what it looks like without the layers. As many dates as you’ve been on, there’s always been some reason or another why neither of you could spend the night; one of you worked too late, the other worked too early the next day, his roommate was home, you were dogsitting for Taehyung. It was frustrating and infuriating and you’d been about five seconds from ripping his clothes off the last time you’d seen him.
“So,” You drawl, giving him an expectant look. “What’s my surprise?”
“I really thought you’d last longer than that. Is the pleasure of my company not enough for you?”
“Joon, please, I’m dying, I waited for you to finish eating and everything because I’m such a good girlfriend.” You pout at him, but you don’t miss the stifled grin when you call yourself his girlfriend. He heaves a dramatic sigh and pushes off the workbench to take your hand.
“Alright, close your eyes,” He says. You obey immediately, following carefully as he leads you through the garage. You hear the bay door closing as you pass, and you assume the automatic timer kicked in to close them all for the night. You’re distracted from your thought as a soft clunk echoes in the garage and Namjoon lets out a soft curse. Still, he’s careful to keep you from any hazards as he guides you, eventually stopping you at what you figure is the other end of the garage.
“Okay,” He says, apprehension ringing through his voice. “You can open them.” You do, and you nearly sob at what you see.
JeepJeep, in all its glory, polished and waxed and shined, and looking nearly new again. You step forward and run your hand along the hood slowly. You whip around to face him with hope in your eyes.
“Go ahead, start her up.” You rush into the driver’s seat and find the key on the dash, ready and waiting. You slide them into the ignition but find yourself hesitating before you start it. You’re so hopeful, so ready for her to work the way she did when you first got her, that you aren’t sure what you’ll do if she doesn’t. Apprehension settles in your chest, clawing its way up your throat. You glance to Namjoon again and at his encouraging grin, you turn the key.
Your jeep absolutely roars to life, immediately, and she sounds beautiful. Better than the day your parents handed over her key, better than you’ve ever heard her, and you could weep, you’re so happy.
Instead, you turn her off, exit the vehicle, and stride the few steps to the hood where Namjoon is standing to pull him into a heated kiss. Your hands tangle in his hair immediately, pulling him in as close as you can. Words arent enough for this, can’t express the sheer and immense gratitude that you feel, the absolute elation at having your jeep back. He returns the kiss, surprised but content as his hands settle on the curve of your hips.
You deepen the kiss, surging upwards and pressing your body flush against Namjoon’s until you’re almost stumbling forward. He steadies you and, without breaking the kiss, walks you back until you’re resting against the hood of your jeep. You can feel the beginnings of his arousal against your hip, and you want more. You want to show him how grateful you are. You part from his lips to ghost your lips down his neck until you get to his throat, at which point you bite. It’s gentler than you usually would be, but it still makes him hiss, and you lap at the mark left to lessen the pain.
When Namjoon’s hands start sliding down, dangerously close to your ass, you bite again, this time suckling at the skin. You don’t stop until he hisses your name and tangles a hand in your hair, loose and wild, and when you finally do pull back, you give him the most innocent smile.
“We’re in the middle of the shop, are you seriously trying to-”
“Do you want me to stop?” You interrupt, cocking a brow at him. His eyes are blown wide and there’s a quickly-forming hickey on his neck that you take great pride in, and he looks like he’s struggling with himself.
“This isn’t how I pictured this,” He finally admits, and you smile.
“It’s not how I pictured it, either,” You agree. He looks slightly relieved that you had other plans as well, but at this point, you’re too far gone to care about those plans. Your nice, comfortable bed is ideal, yes, but it is also so far away, and you really can’t wait that long.
You maintain the eye contact with him as you slide down to your knees, hands massaging up and down his thighs. “Do you want me to stop?” You ask again, softer, as your hands hesitate just shy of the hardness you can feel through his uniform. Your breath ghosts along it, you’re that close to it, but you refrain from touching it at all until he gives you a sharp look.
“Fuck, no, I don’t,” He finally says, and you grin. You can hardly believe you’re about to do this, honestly, even as Namjoon unbuttons the next few clasps to his jumpsuit to reveal all he’s wearing under it is his boxers. You don’t wait for him to take them off, instead sliding the band down just enough for his dick to spring free.
You’re not ashamed at how your mouth waters at the sight.
You’ve never thought of dicks as being anything attractive, in and of themselves. For everyone else you’d been with, they were merely a tool to be used, attached to an attractive man and attractive in their skill, but not in their looks.
God, you were so wrong.
Namjoon’s dick is glorious. Seriously beautiful. It’s long and thick and curves just barely, and you clench instinctively at the thought of it inside you. You’d be worried at how you’re going to fit it if you couldn’t already feel the wetness dripping down your thigh. You were so turned on it could probably slide right in, and you clench again at the thought before reminding yourself that you were on a mission.
The first brush of your hand against his dick has Namjoon huffing, impatient and ready to feel your mouth on him. It’s the first you’ve seen of his authoritative side all night, and you decide that you want more of it. You glide your fingers along the length of him, ghosting over the tip just enough for him to know you were there at all before repeating the motion, again and again. He thrusts forward just a small bit each time, chasing the feeling of your hand, and you can’t stop the smirk on your face as you look up to find him glaring down at you.
“I thought you were going to do something down there,” He growls. You do your best not to shiver at the sound of it.
“I am doing something,” You reply cheekily as you slide your thumb along his slit. He hisses again and shudders. “Isn’t there supposed to be a give and take?”
“If you don’t put that mouth of yours to work, you’re going to see exactly what take means,” He tells you, and you grow hotter at the thought. It must show on your face because he raises a brow at you. “Oh, is that what you want, baby? You want me to take it?” You moan a little at the thought, and though you’re never going to admit it, he knows, just by that small tell.
“Then I’ll take it.” He tightens the grip he has in your hair. “Open your mouth for me, baby.” You comply, and he slides in completely. You can feel him hitting the back of your throat and your nose is buried in the small patch of dark hair at the base of his dick and you don’t even care. Your eyes roll back a little as he slides himself back out before thrusting in once more, and you moan around his cock.
The sound makes him shiver, and he repeats the action, tip hitting your throat once more, and you moan again. He hisses your name and it sounds like music to your ears. You slack your jaw, allowing him more room, and run your tongue along the underside as he slides in and out, groaning softly at the feeling.
“Fuck, you like this baby?” He asks you, falling forward slightly to brace himself against the hood of your jeep. “You like it when I use your mouth like this? Like it when you’re just a little cockslut for me?” You whimper and do your best to nod, though it’s difficult when he’s shoved his dick so far back in your throat that you’re swallowing around it. The taste of his pre-cum hits your tongue as he slides back out, and you’ve honestly never tasted anything so good in your life.
“You’re so good for me like this, baby,” He says. “You’re so pretty like this, on your knees for me. So fucking gorgeous, god, I could cum just like this.” You whine at that; if he’s going to cum inside of you, you sure as hell don’t want it to be down your throat.
He stops the next time he slides out, a soft pop echoing through the room as he does. There’s a trail of spit connecting your lips and the tip of his cock and it’s so erotic you could cum just from that. He’s dripping pre-cum and you give small kitten licks to lap it up before it can fall to the ground. His free hand cradles your chin and he pulls your face up to look him in the eye.
“Get up,” He commands. You obey, scrambling to your feet and glad to get off the cool concrete floor of the garage. He pushes you back until you hit the hood of the jeep, hands running along your legs and up the skirt of your dress. He grips the backs of your thighs and lifts, with more strength than you realized he had, until you’re sitting on the hood, legs splayed around him. He darts forward and sucks a mark into the skin of your collarbone, and you whimper at the feeling of his lips on you.
His hands slide up your thighs, teasing and light, and they drag the skirt of your dress up with them. By the time you can feel the air against your clothed core, he’s pulled back, and when you open your eyes, you find him staring straight at it.
“Shit, babe,” He hisses, “Lace? Fuck, I almost don’t wanna take them off.”
“Then don’t,” You reply without hesitation. He looks up at you, and a crooked smile slowly comes over his face.
“God, you really are fucking perfect, aren’t you?” He mutters. He leans in again and kisses you hard. It’s unforgiving and sloppy and hot and when added to the heat of his hands against your inner thighs as he slowly strokes your skin, it has you grinding against the air for some form of release.
“Please, Joon,” You gasp, hands grasping desperately at his shirt. “Please, please, I need you.”
“You’re so pretty when you beg,” He whispers, laughter clear in his voice as one finger moves to slide against your slit. Even through the fabric, the friction makes you buck, and you can’t stop the moan as he flicks at your clit. “You’re so wet, baby. Absolutely soaked. Tell me, are you always like this when you’re around me?”
You whimper as he moves his fingers to the side to slide his fingers along your slit once more, collecting your wetness as he does. One starts to slowly rub circles just above your clit, close enough that it has you moaning, but so far away from where you need them to be. Your body is shuddering, and you’re dimly aware of your hips rolling to match his circles.
“I asked you a question.” His voice is harsh in your ear as his palm slaps against your thigh. The pain lingers, just enough to make you clench around nothing, and you can feel yourself getting wetter. “Answer me.”
“Yes,” You gasp. “Yes, I’m always this wet around you.” He smiles and slides a finger inside of you. It’s easy, and you contract around him,
“Good girl,” He tells you, thrusting his finger in and out. You whimper again, and he presses a kiss against your neck. Your hips are moving of their own accord, rutting desperately into his hand. “Now tell me, have you imagined this? Did you think about me fucking you in this garage, making you cum with just my fingers?”
You nod quickly. “Yes, yes, I’ve thought about it.” You moan as he slides another finger inside and begins you fucking with them, curling them just enough that they brush against the one spot inside of you that has you seeing stars. “Fuck, Joon, please, I need you.” You’re fucking yourself against his hand, hips grinding hard against his hand. The meat of his palm presses deliciously against your clit, and you feel like sobbing, you’re so close.
His fingers slide out of you, leaving you contracting around nothing, and the emptiness echoes throughout your chest. “Ssh, baby,” Namjoon says softly. You feel a finger against your lips and instinctually open your mouth. He slides his fingers inside and you suck, licking your own slick off of them. You look at him as you do it, and relish in the fact that he looks just as wrecked as you feel. “Fuck, I need to be in you. Do you have a condom?”
“No, it’s fine,” You say quickly. “I’ve got an IUD, we’re both clean, please just fuck me, Joon, I need it.” His grip on your thigh tightens at your words, and he nods.
“Yeah, okay,” He mutters. He pushes lightly against your shoulder and you let him. He lays you back on the hood, gripping your thighs and pulling your hips down to line himself up with your entrance. “Fuck, you’re so wet, baby.”
“I know, it’s all you, Joon,” You tell him, back arching as you feel the tip of his dick against your entrance. “It’s all because of you, you get me like this, just wanna fuck you all day.”
With a groan, he slams into you, and you gasp. Your back arches up off the hood at the same time your legs wrap around his hips to keep him inside you. The moan tears itself from your throat, echoing through the building, and you’re glad for the music still booming through the garage. Namjoon moves, one hand bracing himself against the jeep as he lets himself adjust to the feeling of your raw heat against him and the other keeping your hips steady in an iron grip.
“Fuck, Namjoon, move, please,” You whine, hips already grinding against him in an effort to entice him into following your wishes. He nods and starts shallow thrusts. The stretch burns in a way that makes you want more, and you can feel every inch of him inside of you as he begins to fuck you harder.
“Fuck, you feel so good,” He moans, and if that isn’t the best sound you’ve ever heard, you aren’t sure what is. “God, I fucking…fucking love the feel of your pussy around me, it’s so good, and you’re fucking beautiful like this, taking my cock so well, babe.” You whimper and roll your hips against his, hands scrambling for any kind of purchase against the hood of the jeep and finding none.
“Harder, Joon, fuck,” You pant, moving to grip your own thighs in a desperate attempt to release some of the energy building up in your gut. He complies, fucking you harder against the jeep. You think you can hear it moving, but you can’t be sure, because all of your focus is currently on the pressure against your pelvis, the way the rolling heat between your legs is expanding, and you can’t even be bothered to control the wanton moans coming out of your mouth. Namjoon is just as loud, your name falling from his lips like a prayer as he pumps in and out of you. One of his hands moves and he shifts, angling so that he hits your sweet spot with every thrust while his other hands begins to rub hard circles on your clit in time with his fucking.
“Fuck, yes, come on, baby, cum on my dick, wanna see you cum for me, wanna feel you as I fill you up,” Namjoon hisses, slapping at your thigh once more. That does the trick, the rubber band in your belly snapping as you reach your high; your back comes off the hood completely and you shoot forward, hands gripping Namjoon’s shirt so hard you think it might rip, hips rocking against his as you ride out your high.
It only takes a few shallow thrusts while you’re spasming around him for Namjoon to fall over that edge as well, and you can feel the hot liquid settling inside of you. There’s more of it than you thought there would be, enough that even as he slides out, you can’t miss the way it drips out of you.
You’re both panting as Namjoon slides your panties back into place, a smirk on his face as he does. You look at each other, and you let yourself fall back onto your elbows.
“I’ll get the lights and the music if you get the door,” He says. You’re up in a flash, heading to the door controls by the bay your jeep is parked at as Namjoon hurtles through the garage to turn off the music and lights. It takes less than five minutes, and only a couple of minor incidents in which you hear something fall to the garage floor, and you’re speeding down the road to your apartment.
If you had to stop in the parking lot of your building and ride him in the backseat, then, well…no one needed to know but the two of you.

What's the best food to have at a sleepover? I’d have a blast at a sleepover if my friends and I were to get a square-cut cheese pizza with a box of wings. Cheesy nachos with beef would be great too.
How did you meet the last person you shared a bed with? We were introduced by our respective friends.
Do you like the yellow cheetos better or the orange ones? I don’t like Cheetos, period. Cheese puffs never did grow on me.
Where did you buy the shoes you wore today? My mom got it for me two Christmases ago.
Do you have any half siblings? Nope. But this year I found out I have a half-cousin (and possibly half-cousins) from a trash uncle who apparently fooled around behind my aunt’s back, but I have no desire to associate with her or that entire family altogether.
How many DVD players are in the house? We still have two lying around but we haven’t used either in 6–7 years.
Do you like the last song you heard on the radio? I cried, because I needed to hear the lyrics that were being sung.
Do you know anyone who has been on TV? Sure, mostly some of my friends’ parents.
When going shopping for junk food, what's the first thing you pick up? My eyes usually dart to the Pringles before anything else. And if there’s also any salted egg chips that looks appealing enough for me to pick up.
How would you react if you found out you had a long lost sister? I think my literal first reaction would be to be pissed at my parents for hiding such a secret from me for a long time. It would depend on how they explain the situation if I end up wanting to meet her or if I can do without.
At sleepovers, do you usually stay up all night or actually go to sleep? Hahaha I’m the grandma that passes out. I’ve never successfully stayed up at a sleepover and for some reason I’m always the first one to start getting sleepy. I guess all my friends’ bedrooms are really that comfy.
Is there anything in the room you're in that's really dusty? [continued from last night] For sure. There are some things in my room I barely use or move around so it definitely wouldn’t be a surprised if they’ve since gathered up a fine layer of dust.
Do you know anybody with different colored eyes? Yeah, someone from my high school has this condition.
Are any of your relatives vets? [continued AGAIN from the night before last, lmao send help] As far as I know, no. We’re not really the type of family that produces doctors, and I believe we lean more towards law.
Who cleans the most in your house? Oh my mom, for sure. She wants all chores done a certain way, and she’s always genuinely happy to do everything herself.
Do you own any shirts that cost over $100? No. I think my most expensive shirts are my wrestling ones, which never went above P3000, I think.
What about any shoes? Do you think that's a lot of money for clothes? Yeah, well shoes are generally more expensive so I’ve definitely spent more on sneakers than I’ve ever had on a shirt. I think a pair of shoes that go for P5000 is fine because for the most part it’s also already a testament to its quality. I draw the line at P5000 shirts, because you’re only paying for the label at that point.
What's the movie theatre in your town called? Ours don’t have names. Most of our cinemas are housed within malls, so whenever we make plans to watch a movie we just mention the mall.
How many minutes do you consider late? Idk man, I prize punctuality a lot. People to me are either early, on the dot, or late.
Is there any jam in the fridge right now? No, we don’t really consume jam. We’re not a very spread-y kind of family, come to think of it. We prefer meatier stuff in our sandwiches.
What did you get your best friend for their last birthday? I learned iMovie throughout my UTI-slash-fever horror experience so I can make a video for Gab that compiled her friends’ greetings in time for her birthday. I wasn’t able to get Angela anything because I was still looking for a job then and didn’t have any source of income; and because Gab broke up with me on that day so I was too distraught to be doing anything.
What about your mom's and dad's last birthdays? My dad was abroad for his last birthday. I didn’t get my mom anything because we don’t have that kind of relationship.
What kinds of food do you dunk into milk? Uhm mostly none, because I never really have milk unless I’m at a hotel or at a friend’s, lol. I’ve dipped chocolate chip cookies into milk several times though, and those didn’t turn out bad at all :) I’m a fan of the mushiness.
Do you have any current or past teachers on your facebook friends? A couple of my high school teachers are still my Facebook friends. I never added nor received requests from my college professors, which I prefer tbh because I’ve always viewed college profs as having a more professional vibe compared to my grade school and high school teachers, who were like parents to me.
Are there any baby pictures of you up? Like, the room I’m currently in? No but my school portrait from Prep is framed and hanging on my wall, which is the closest thing. I was already 7, though.
Do you have any friends who have bleached blonde hair? Nah. I have a lot of friends who’ve dyed their hair over the years, but none bleached all the way through. Gabie did, but just for her tips.
How much sugar do you like in your tea/coffee? Lots. I need every trace of it feeling like black coffee removed, haha.
What color is the cereal in your cupboard? We don’t eat cereals in this family; we’ve always enjoyed a classic Filipino breakfast. Sometimes we’ll get cereals I guess, but we never eat them the traditional way; my mom and sister usually just snack on them straight from the box on non-breakfast hours.
Are you wearing any jewlery that a boyfriend/girlfriend gave you? No.
Has a boyfriend/girlfriend ever given you jewlery? Yes.
Have you ever seen the last person you kissed cry? Many times.
Would you rather work at a gas station or be a maid? I hate chores and touching other people’s stuff, so I’ll go with the gas station. I could meet different people from that job too, which sounds more interesting.
What's the closest store to your house called? Just Things. Basically sells hype merch, including the P5000 streetwear shirts I called out earlier, for all the hype heads in my area.
Do horror movies scare you more when they're 'based on a true story'? The biographical nerd in me obviously gets excited, but I don’t get scared. I get more invested when they include snippets or updates about the real-life counterparts and go beyond the vague ‘based on a true story’ banner.
Do you still talk to the last person who hurt you (emotionally)? Yeah but I really need some sort of coin bank thing for it for every time I do so because idk why I still hang around sometimes.
Is there an outdoor movie theatre where you live? Not where I live. But I do know that because of Covid, some malls outside of my city have started offering drive-in cinemas, which were never a thing here before.
What color was the last food you ate? Golden brown, yellow, black, red, green. It was a truffle and mushroom pizza that I treated my family to because I had gotten my first paycheck this week and I would’ve looked like an absolute ass if I spent it on anything else other than my family. I MEAN I wanted to treat them too, of course, but I won’t deny that there’s an underlying reason for me buying the food as well. Welcome to a firstborn’s life in the Philippines (and in Asia, tbh).
Have you ever seen your mom or dad drunk? My mom has been tipsy, but not drunk. My dad never lets himself get swayed by alcohol. He’ll still get a single bottle of beer, but I’ve never seen his demeanor change.
How expensive is too expensive for a pair of jeans? Anything above P7,000 or P7,500, maybe.
After seeing a movie, do you go to a site to enter a review about it? Nah, I’m not the Letterboxd type of person. I’ll sometimes tweet about a movie, but only if I found it good or intriguing enough.
Have you ever done that? No. I’m not the best movie reviewer, so even though I’m aware of Letterboxd’s or IMDb’s appeal I’ve always been too shy to share my thoughts or ratings just in case someone ends up criticsplaining a movie to me.
Would you consider McDonald's a restaurant? I know what route this question is getting to but I’m too tired to defend my thought process, so suffice it to say I love McDonald’s, lol.
Do your parents vote? LOL my mom only started doing so again when I registered - before 2016, she cast her last vote back in 1992. Of course, her opinions were wrong for both the presidential (2016) and senatorial elections (2019) haha.
My dad does not vote and he stopped giving a shit about Philippine politics when he started working abroad 20 years ago and increasingly spent more time overseas than he does in his home country. Which, honestly, as sad and bad as it sounds, I totally understand. He’s completely detached from the goings-on in our country that to make him vote would be just as useful as letting him purely guess his choices.
Are there any creepy pictures up on the walls of your house? We’ve never gotten such a comment before, so no.
What's the last thing you were excited to eat? The pizzas I bought tonightttttt :> I got truffle and mushroom pizza and quattro formaggi pizzas and they were from Motorino, this fancy (and pricey) place I used to go on dates in that I haven’t visited so long.
It’s hilarious because I didn’t even plan on buying any food today as I’m stingy with money...but in my shift today I was tasked to order food bundles for certain media partners we regularly collaborate with. I kept ordering all these fucking pizzas for people I don’t even know and I got so jealous???? So I ended up buying for myself at the end of the day HAHAHAH
Do you ever hit electronics if they don't work? I smack them against a surface, but I rarely hit them with my own hand.
Who’s the most romantic person you ever went out with? I’ve only gone out with one person and, her toxic traits aside, I highly doubt any future prospect would ever come remotely close to her.
Is there anything hanging from the ceiling in your room? My bedroom light.
How would you react if your best friend was pregnant/got someone pregnant? She’s not planning on having a kid any time soon so I would assume it happened by accident, and I would assume she would be in distress. That said, my instinct would be to be there for her and support her in whatever she does moving forward.
Do you know who Lisa Simpson is? Sure thing, she’s my favorite.
Have you ever had a crush on the last person you spoke to online? No. I’ve never even met her.
Have you ever seen the last person you hugged dressed up fancy? Sure, my grandma dresses up for parties and other formal events.
(If your parents married), Do you know where they got engaged? No. My dad didn’t even pop the question; at some point they just sat each other down, had a long talk, and decided they’d get engaged. Idk where it happened though. Maybe while on a date somewhere?
What color was the last cup you drank out of? Copper.
What was the last picture you printed of? I honestly can’t tell you. I’ve printed a number of documents for various adulting tasks lately, but I don’t know the last time I specifically printed out a photo.
What restaurant has the best fries? I’d have to go with Army Navy. Or if we’re going with fast food, Jollibee.
What does your mailbox look like? We don’t have one. Messengers just insert envelopes through our screen door.
Have you ever gotten something stuck on the roof? We have a rooftop, so that’s never been a problem for us.
Have you ever had a surprise party thrown for you? No. I don’t think I’ve ever been that important for anyone.
Is the room you're in organized? It can do with some fixing, but it’s not terrible.
Would your mom make a good president? She’d be the most organized, neurotic, and punctual president in the history of presidents, but I doubt she’d be of help in conflict resolution or law-making, or any decision-making aspects that go with being president.
The 2nd class you had last time you went to school: ever skipped it? I don’t think I ever skipped that class in the short time I took it before Covid took over.
Do your aunts and uncles have kids? Yeah, nearly everyone does.
Is this survey interesting so far? I liked it.
Do you say fancy or formal? Or something else? Depends on the context. I use both as I think they have different connotations anyway.
Does your English teacher have kids? The last English professor I had doesn’t.
Does your computer make a lot of noise? The fan whirs when the laptop gets too busy. The noise is definitely noticeable considering how quiet my laptop is 98% of the time; but I wouldn’t call it bothersome.
Do you see movies at home or in the theatre more? Home. I watch at the cinema like, a maximum of 5 times a year.
What's your favorite thing to eat during a movie? Potato Corner fries. Non-negotiable.

Remembering Joey Bruno
Originally published in the Sacramento Jazz & Blues Quarterly Bedtime is sometime around dawn. Dinner is usually whatever you want it to be. Shall we go to Iceland? Festivals, fliers, wristbands, Sharpies on skin, smoke, grass, hash, molasses, sky, blue, crisp, clear sky. And yet I’m still writing all this within a grey airport terminal, locked into some kind of strange Druid-esque ritual with pen and paper. Deadline is tomorrow, where were you when you were supposed to be working? Don’t have any answers for now, just that I need to write and get it out to my boss within the next day. Or two. It wouldn’t have been the first deadline blown. But think, distract myself with the McDonald’s coffee and keep putting down adjectives and phrases from places I’ve been, things I’d seen, dreams I’d never have again with people I’ve never met and music I had. 40 minutes till boarding starts, I’ll be last, of course. It pays enough to fly but not enough to enjoy it. Been getting harder and harder to deal with the travel, at any rate. Starting to notice the spell everyone is under, the sleepwalking nature of the corporate employee. It had only been noticeable after it had been broken, which I had no problem doing, ever. When your home is a hotel you take your shots however you can get them, besides it wasn’t like you have to live in any particular town past a few days at most. Half-heartedly started keeping a list of rejections and their professions, making sure to note that there was only one waitress on the list, most were from bookstores or places where there was an escape for all parties. Don’t need to make it more awkward than it has to be. Sorry, I didn’t mean, then the words fade off into the ocean. On the edge of nowhere, like a little seaside town. Maybe that’s where I’d like to end up, like a lifeguard in the post-apocalypse, no responsibilities, just looking cool for the seagulls. How many life guards had I asked out? Not many, either way. Concerts didn’t go well with water, not in my experience. Can’t seem to find a way to write about anything other than something on the present times, life and times. I struggle, already flipped through the notebooks to jog the memory with some tit and tat that had to be discarded for the sake of length from another article. Or two. Or four. Or 12. Throwing yourself to the wolves, towards and into the meat grinder that one might just pay the bills with the right amount of ink in the right places on a blank piece of paper. Who cares about music festivals and pop culture when there’s McDonald’s coffee and the cold inside of an airplane to look forward to? Four times I’d attempted to ask about an airline attendant’s relationship status, thrice I’d been rejected. Once she’d pretended not to hear me and instead moved to the opposite end of the plane for the remainder or the flight. Understandable, no harm done. No harm done. By anyone, right? Who said this was ever going to be a love story, you and I?
College had been a breeze, not that I’m bragging. State schools were like that, at least then, and Californ-I-A’s were no different. No doubt now there’s better options available for where I was at when I had to decide where to go to school, but there you are. A degree in journalism is a degree in journalism, and I had little else to go on other than my love of music, substances, travel, female company, and a shocking talent at being able to string together sentences. In a way it’s always given me a bit of a guilty feeling. I never sat down and really worked at learning or improving with regards to writing, I just sort of could do it. That’s the short version of how I found my niche of a career, one I thought I could exploit anyway. Turns out I was right, and in a way it was everything I could (and did!) hope for. Except everybody’s got to grow up sometimes, and I did, regrettably. There’s only so many hungover mornings a human being can take before they’re permanently reduced to a shambling, sickly mess of what used to be a humanoid organism, and I had certainly put myself on that path. Got off of it, thanks to the countless AA meetings I made myself go to, but I digress. That had been the first mark on the wall of things that I could no longer enjoy about the gig, the fact that now I had to do the whole thing sober. The hardest substance I have confidence I can enjoy responsibly now is coffee, and even then the ugly demon of acid reflux put me back in my place before too long. Suddenly all the kids were much more annoying than usual, the travel a hassle, the food revolting, and the music itself just kind of bad, which was the real heartbreaker. Some days before it had been all to keep me going, minus the women, which were always a constant. “Festival sluts” is the term you’ll want to Google (or DuckDuckGo) if you’re curious about what I mean, also colloquially known as upper middle class girls whose parents were too busy working to devote anything past a friendly “hullo” to their children, and thus succeeded in raising a bunch of hedonistic, attention-desperate, and morally naïve young people with excess income and too much time to spend it all in. Nasty ain’t it? But it kept me coming back for more, like the good-natured animal that I am. We all are. That’s the secret that I learned more than anything from the beat, we are all more simple and pleasure driven than we could ever articulate or realize. It’s what keeps the lights on at home, for everything and anything. Probably. Or maybe I’m just bitter. Most of the friends I made during college or were colleagues in my escapades writing about indie rock et al. around the globe are gone now. Burnt out, some burnt up, most just couldn’t hack it anymore and left to go get real jobs at real newspapers. The circus, or pirate ship, as is probably more accurate a nomer, is not for everyone, and rarely does it last forever. Bet you’re wondering where that leaves me. Still bitter, but still coming back for more, just like I was always going to. Always. So why don’t I quit? You tell me. Because I know why.
The finest writer I ever met was a journalist by the name of Joey Bruno, a guy I came across one of the many late nights I spent at the pathetic office of my college’s newspaper. I was editing a freshman’s piece about how the White Album was actually really bad, sighing uncontrollably the whole time, when Mr. Bruno walked in and struck up a conversation with yours truly. I happily engaged, as any activity that didn’t involve that stupid piece of writing was fine by me. He explained that he was friends with the real Editor , who was at his parents’ in Wisconsin for the weekend, and would drop by periodically when he got off work to help out where he could. “Why spend your time working on bad writing by dumb college kids?” I’d asked him. “Free beer, plus it can be fun sometimes. There’s been plenty of stuff come through here that I rewrote beyond all recognition just for fun, and nine times out of ten the original author doesn’t even notice. Good times.” Maybe so, I’d thought. In any case every other Friday or thereabouts I’d get a late night revising buddy to help cull the newspaper’s intimidating stack of submissions. It was in those early morning hours that I came to the conclusion that I wanted to become a music journalist, mostly from talking to Mr. Bruno about his own adventures. But I don’t think I listened, not really. Maybe if I had I’d be off this conveyor belt by now, but then again maybe not. Maybe I’d never have started. One night in particular while we were enjoying our cigarettes, coffee, and beer (all courtesy of the newspaper of course), he retailed me with a story of his long lost love, a girl he’d known briefly in the California punk scene of the late 80s. I was instantly entranced. “It was a magical time,” he’d said to me while stroking his magnificent beard. “But I’m glad it’s over now. It was getting messy there at the end,” I brought up how those little parts of the world, at that time were being romanticized an awful lot in contemporary media then. “And for good reason, too.” He’d responded wistfully. “A lot of great things happened for a lot of good people. It was about as close to the 60s as anyone came since then, I think. That much hope,” And this is where he began to tell his story, the story of “the rebel known as ‘Justine,’” as he’d put it. However it had happened, the two had come into contact through the various zines they’d each produced and sent out to the other punks in town. The closest thing to an internet forum for back then was to just be louder than everyone else, apparently. That was the only real way to get heard, to start a dialogue of some kind. That or take your chances at the shows, which they did anyway, but there wasn’t much talking going on there. Joey had written to Justine complimenting her on “Pop!,” which was her way of pushing her radical politics and militant-feminist views out on to the unsuspecting public behind the thin-façade of a bubblegum periodical. The art had been good, and the writing made everyone Joe showed it to laugh out loud, so he made a point to let the author know, whoever they were. There was an address included in the back for people to write in, so he did just that. He also included a copy of his own creation, the somewhat popular (in those circles anyway) “Buzz ‘n’ Stuff.” “What was it about?” I asked as my friend rolled himself another cigarette. “Nothing really, I just sort of made stuff about interesting things I found at the library then slapped it together in that. It seemed to work. I remember the one I sent her had something about how to get popped bubblegum out of your hair without cutting it all off, so I think that’s what got her interested. There wasn’t anything of value or substance in there, let’s be real,” Joey took another swig of his beer and reached into the cooler below his desk for another, being sure to throw me one too like a sport. “Thanks, boss. But continue, you got me interested now,” So he did. It had started slowly, really, with the trading of zines and letters, the occasional patch or pin by mail too. Eventually after a lengthy correspondence they made a plan to meet up at a concert, The Vandals to be precise. Joey had taken painstaking measures to show up in the most hip clothing of the day, studded leather jacket, combat boots, the whole nine yards. “I looked like a freak,” he told me with a chuckle. “But then I saw her,” Justine had arrived looking like everything and nothing Joey had expected her to. She had the familiar punk gear, Doc Martins and an army jacket covered in patches and safety pins, but the rest of what she had on departed from the norm drastically. It had been some bizarre cross between a punk, hippy, and cult leader all in one, macabre golden jewelry offsetting the “meat is murder” t shirt underneath. “It was great,” said Joey. “People were afraid of her at that show. She looked really scary,” They hit it off and had a jolly old time watching The Vandals play, and later they found themselves alone on a hill overlooking the suburbs, talking about the issues and passing a joint back and forth. It was all music to my ears, as it would be for most any young person, I suspect. “Tell me more,” I’d implored. These were fantasies that I needed fulfilled. Joey paused and rocked back and forth in his chair contently for a few seconds before he complied. My heart sank before he spoke. “We were inseparable after that first time. It really was something. We could go anywhere, do anything, and we would always end up on the same page somehow. It was easily the deepest spiritual, emotional, whatever you want to call it connection I’ve ever had with another human being, let alone girlfriend. But then a year or two later her Mom moved her and her brother up to Connecticut to be closer to the rest of their family. Last I heard she went to school in Maine, but that was it as far as we were concerned. Finito,” He smiled through all this as though recalling some rosy-cheeked memory but I was aghast. “What do you mean that’s it? You didn’t try to follow her or anything?” Joey just laughed. “Yeah, that was really an option at 17 without a car or money. It was just something that happened when we were kids, nothing really. I’m glad it happened at all, now.” Well then. What do you make of that? The conversation drifted pretty heavily after that point, as it always did when Joey and I got to jabbering and drinking, and as usual it was stories of the times he’d been on tour years later with Ozzy Osbourne or The Stooges or someone, then got to interview them endlessly and write about it. The usual vices were there as well in his stories, the drugs, the travel, the women, the glamor, the romance. But it all left pretty quickly once the novelty wore off, hence why Joey had quit after a few years and moved back home to Sacramento. When I knew him at the college newspaper he was a jazz correspondent, if you can wrap your head around that, for several of the snootier publications in the area. “I skipped to the fun part,” he told me. “The shows never get old, now. Plus jazz cats have the best shit,” he said with a wink. I probably just laughed, I don’t know, maybe downed the rest of my beer. I’ll be bound to have another once I get on the plane, off to Finland this time. Apparently it’s festival season in Scandinavia and its surrounding territories. Guess I’ll be writing about that all then though, from a different airport terminal that looks just like this one, with coffee and food and cigarettes and beer that shortens the life as much as the ones that came before. I could go on, but I won’t, for both our sake. There’s no moral to be gleaned from all this just a simple explanation of the reality, and how I’m passing the time in the airport by writing this, because I said I would. I promised. It’s my group now, and I have to go.
