This shitty Harry Potter game has been making my blood boil so let me get personal real quick.

I am not Jewish. This body is not Jewish. Didn't grow up with Judaism, or practicing any of those beliefs.

But for the majority of our life on this Earth, for whatever dumb reason, people believed we were Jewish.

I was beaten to a pulp, made fun of, called names for years on the simple fact that people thought I was Jewish. Teachers would not intercept. No adult would try to stop it.

"They're just expressing their own personal beliefs."

This followed me from when I was about 5 or 6 all the way to my adulthood. I would have everything threatened towards me, people trying to come to my house to hurt me.

Of course over the years they found more reasons to try and hurt me (being queer and disabled for starters). But from the very beginning people hated me because they assumed I was Jewish.

Despite this, I will never fully be able to understand actually living as a Jewish person. I was never Jewish and I don't practice any similar faith.

But when I hear desperate calls for help from actual Jewish people, begging and pleading to not give money to antisemitic bigots who will fund efforts to hurt them, I unfortunately still (on some level, not entirely) understand where they are coming from.

JK Rowling is not the only one you will support if you buy the game. You will support the game devs who share the same exact views.

The only difference between Hogwarts Legacy and donating directly to antisemitic causes is you're getting Nazi Propaganda The Game out of it.

I do not care if this makes you feel bad, because it should.

Basically yes, Tumblr needs to make money or it'll be shut down.

But Staff Are Not Our Friends.

The SECOND somebody high up enough on the chain thinks they can sell the user base out and fuck us all over to get more money that's what will happen.

I'm not even saying like, the devs hate us or anything! Often those sorts of decisions come from way higher up and the sorts who make them don't always give a shit about what the devs and/or the staff that deal directly with users think.

But Tumblr staff are NOT our friends, they're employees of a company that wants to profit off this websites and that means you NEED to be vigilant rather than just going "lol they can meme its all good now, they're our buddies they're One Of Us" because getting users to be loyal to the company is the first step to getting users to accept all kinds of shitty treatment.

They've already made numerous shitty changes that they're sticking with. They've failed completely to do ANYTHING about the bot problems, to say nothing of the nazis and other bigots on this site (meanwhile users who've done no wrong have to fight to have wrongful account termination reversed). They've partnered with a company that has a privacy policy of "lol u don't have privacy anymore one you make about account with us" for their Live feature. They're pushing more and more ads--some of which you can't even report despite having things like graphic injuries on display. The Blaze feature let's people pay money to shove harmful stuff into the faces of a bunch of random people because staff doesn't see a problem with deliberately inflammatory posts getting Blazed sometimes. There have been animations added that are migraine triggers and the response has been a "*shrug* sucks to be you I guess" to the users trying to raise the alarm about accessibility problems.

And things will only continue to deteriorate and change until tumblr homogenizes with other socmed sites if people let it, and again--best way to get users to give them a free pass on shitty changes is to engender mindless loyalty to their brand.

So yes, Tumblr needs to make money so yeah buy tbe funny meme merch--that's definitely one of the most user-friendly ways they can make some money! Buy the ad-free subs and stuff if you want!

But don't act like the staff, both as a Concept and as individual members, are our friends and One Of Us because they're employees of a company that, in our shitty capitalistic society, will gladly sell us all out the second that it becomes easy enough to do so.

(That said don't be an asshole to the staffers, either. Just. Be aware that enticing brand loyalty is absolutely something companies use to get users to accept garbage changes.)

regarding your latest post, at first i had rted one or two jackson hinkle posts since the sheer numbers on his posts seemed to encourage the idea that there would be more reach of the videos he was bringing attention to, but his account felt odd to me and once i snooped a little and realized he's a white supremacist it became clear that the fact that he was getting so many numbers compared to the sources the videos he posted were originally from is precisely what was so insidious about it all. and that's, like you said, true of quite a few white supremacist accounts that are trying to capitalize on this situation. it's so despairingly evil. i'm really sorry you're having to see so many people rt from those kind of sources, i can't imagine how frustrating it is, and i really hope more people bring attention to it. i did see a post going around on twt about jackson hinkle being a white supremacist but i'm not sure if there have been any made about some of the other figures. are there any names you would particularly recommend watching out for?

Yeah, Hinkle is a huge one that I've seen going around. In my case, I have a lot of big name nazis already blocked, so it's hard for me to know for sure if people I follow are rt'ing directly from them. I hope not, but there's no way for me to be sure, and frankly they've demonstrated such bad judgement I wouldn't be surprised. I will say that off the top of my head Nick Fuentes and Andrew Tate have joined the "pro-palestine" cause (obviously not genuinely), and both are dangerous nazi lunatics. I would also STRONGLY discourage interacting with Hasanabi, who is ostensibly a "leftist" youtuber but has joined many far-right and bigoted causes in the past, including helping kick off the mass harassment of Amber Heard last year. If you want to support the charities he's done streams for, donate to them directly, don't go through him or give him publicity.

The ones I'm mostly seeing people retweet aren't big names, they fall into one of two categories:

a) "Meme accounts" made specifically to spread nazi rhetoric, generally with blue checks. Honestly, treat a blue check as a red flag, ESPECIALLY if it's not under a real name. Check the bios and timelines. Like I said, greek statue avatars are a favorite of these and are massive red flags. Emphasis on "manly" or "male" strength is really common. Also look out for "conspiracy" themed language, ie "what THEY don't want you to know" "the REAL news" "the REAL truth" "[x] supremacy" "jewish supremacy" "deep state/elites" etc. They use memes a lot, which like…don't retweet memes and jokes about people dying just in general, maybe (that's another complaint i have about the way people are behaving), but also know it's a red flag. If the bio isn't enough then scan their timeline and see what else they've posted, especially before October 7th. You'll almost certainly find out and out antisemitism and transphobia. Also bear in mind that gold checks just mean paying Musk more money, they're not necessarily "legacy" or legitimate sources or anything like that.

b) This one is sadder, but younger teens who recently discovered politics and have just completely been indoctrinated and are lashing out at all Jewish people as a result. Go to their timeline and see them talking about how antisemitism isn't real, how the Hamas attacks were completely fake, how the entire conflict was manufactured to make "them" money, and Holocaust denial (and generally interacting a lot with the above listed nazi accounts.) They often support Russia and similar politically too because they're angry at America. There's a lot of them on here as well. It's sad but it's dangerous and they shouldn't be given platforms. This one is easier to not notice, though, since they aren't necessarily hardcore white supremacists, just kids who got roped in and aren't necessarily going to be blowing as many dogwhistles in their display names, icons, etc.

in general just be careful, be mindful, and seriously keep an eye out for blue checks -- a LOT of these accounts have them.

as a palestinian-american, i do wanna say that israel definitely knows how to do propaganda and ironically they take a lot of notes from the nazis which is why it's so solid. zionists will also claim that you're antisemitic for being pro-palestine which is not true at all, don't believe their bullshit. we live in an age where we can't even trust the news on our televisions to give us the truth because they're politically skewed towards white people, so it's important to make sure that your information is coming directly from palestinian and gazan people.

what us outside palestine can do right now is spread information and contact your representatives (if you're eligible to do so), and boycott companies that are pro-israel. donations are blocked by israel so they'll just bounce back, don't waste your time and money on them. it's not much, but when everyone contributes, we can make a big difference.

So imagine you like a tabletop franchise a lot, but you don't currently like how they're doing it. Or many of the people that run it.

For example, imagine you like Greg. But Greg married a Nazi! So wherever you go with Greg, Nazi Flo follows around. You do not care for the ideological bend of Flo, even when Flo is trying to be "nice," and conversational, but her ideological bend will always eventually bend the conversation to being how Nazi Ideology Is Right (tm), and that's just how Flo is, trying to get you to just flow in medias res into her viewpoint about everything related to culture, people and economy and all things related to it. You can't even talk to her about potato salad without her blaming the cost of the potatoes on, "greedy Capitalist Jews," or something, and "why potato plants should be owned by society, for the People." Her specific people, of course.

Greg's a cool guy you like to hang with, but the people that he's now married to, and loudly chime in on everything he does artistically, means you can't ever just have Greg. You can't ever spot Greg $20 without knowing for sure, Flo will eat an extra $20.00 in bratwurst and "German" micro brew beer, putting commerce towards Nazi causes directly or through embezzlement, because she controls the pocket book and they're joined at the hip. So every dollar you give to Greg, you know is another dollar that will find it way towards ideological causes you don't like, supporting circles of drugged up people on some sociological hoodo you do not support. And the only way to deprive them of that sweet dosh is to not give Greg money.

And it's frustrating, because Flo is like the Yoko Ono of Greg's art and previous work. Sure, Greg isn't perfect, but he makes enjoyable stuff. Flo demands it be done a certain way to fit her standards and vision, and her standards and vision always seems to amount to her having explicit control over it, and him, and consumers by extension. And she'll smear Greg as a monster in his personal life by vagueposting about people that do what he does to her other friends in education, government and culture.

Now, Greg doesn't exist and the ideology in question surely isn't Nazism, that's just a for-instance. Totally not related to any real group at all. But that relationship is effectively in play, in this vague scenario.

But, I've been pondering trying to make a standalone urban fantasy game based on vampires. With its own history, its own meta, its own powers rules and such. With gentle nods towards previous works and permutations in the vampire mythology and culture, but not ones that are immediately take-to-courtable.

The problem is it's so difficult and so much riskier than just making a for-fun homebrew module to existing franchise content, and because it would not legally be attached to the franchise that inspired it, it may cause legal issues to interact with it.

When a tabletop IP isn't D&D, it fights for that 5% of the shelfspace that isn't D&D. To get popular, you need to already be popular. To get traction, you need to succeed right out the gate. Otherwise, you'll languish.

hate how just looking at things online is like an inherently loaded economic and political choice now. do I want to familiarize myself with what the bigots that endanger my country are saying by checking out primary sources? I'm giving them 'clicks', boosting their ratings and potentially encouraging an algorithm to share their content more widely.

if I go to watch them speak on youtube they may make money directly off of this. if I download an ad blocker to get around this, I am taking away money from small time marginalized creators if I watch any of their videos without disabling it. if I want to read a news article that implies people like me are less than human, I have to accept that I am giving them the positive feedback of my engagement JUST by clicking on the link. depending how I am serviced this link (such as through an automated rec feed that came bundled with a default web browser) I run the risk of reinforcing to my personal device that I would like to be served more links from news sites that run stories implying people like me are less than human, rather than that every few months I will grudgingly observe bigotry with the intention of better guarding myself against it in the future.

every decision I make to look at or avoid something on most major websites, especially news, video platforms, and any social media site but tumblr, has to take into account not just "do I want to have seen this" but "do I want to concretely make this thing more popular and/or leave a trail of stored information registering me as somebody who wants to observe this thing?" I'm not on tiktok (I don't even log in to youtube) but the way the algorithm there works, prioritizing content you spend the most time looking at (or perhaps unable to look away from?) rather than content you mark yourself as 'liking', is something right out of one of my paranoid delusions.

the push for a more profitable internet is one of the driving forces behind our online panopticon and I've seen very little discussion about how this like. automatically makes the very basic act of trying to get context on the way bigots who want you dead are drumming up support into an action of direct support for bigots. yes, I know there are adblocks and archived page versions and all kinds of clever little workarounds. but when did we need a workaround to be able to see with our eyes without funding nazis? I could, let's say, walk into a library and pull a copy of mein kampf off the shelf and skim through it where I stood without having at any point provided money, validation, or a 'boost' in publicity to nazis active in my country, and potentially without anyone else becoming aware that I am reading a copy of mein kampf. if I wanna read a fox article because I know they're a wildly popular news network that has been on the cutting edge of american bigotry my whole life? I have validated fox news's siterunners with my pageview, left an enormous digital paper trail, potentially encouraged my device to show me more fox news articles, and potentially provided fox news with ad revenue they can use to more efficiently spread their dangerous lies and half-truths.

Further Insight on Briar's Recent Discourse & Prim's Apparent Grooming of Younger, Newer Witches

It was suggested to me that instead of making one long post (which I was genuinely sorry for creating in the moment as well), that I should offer the second half in a separate one so that it is easier to share and harder to simply ignore as a wall of text.

Here is the link to the first half of the current JBird and Briar discourse floating around. I highly encourage everyone involved in the Witchblr community to review both posts and not just this final addition. 

Regarding Prim stirring the pot, I actually do have proof of that on my page somewhere if you wouldn't mind my sending it to you? The person I reblogged it from, Mahi, also received death threats from Prim when they were only 16 and Prim was 20 (I can't ask him to share that though because Prim has since used her following to drive him off of Tumblr and he's still fairly [and justifiably] sensitive about it.)

Regarding Briar's statements more specifically though, I can see where the confusion is coming from. After the "in France" part, she's just defining a relevant term (hence the use of "irrelevant details) and then giving an explanation of how she came to be so knowledgeable about that term/concept. I wouldn't say she's calling Prim's activism an "irrelevant detail," but pointing out how Prim uses it as a shield against backlash whenever another blog (not just tradcrafters) calls out her platform. I don't expect you to fully understand or see what I mean when I say that, of course. Because you are still new, and these are habits I've observed of hers from nearly a year of following their interactions. I would, however, like to point out that Briar doesn't say anything racist about Prim and does not once bring up her race. In fact, I think if you read her entire post and not just point 3 as Prim has it cropped out in all of her mentions of it, you would see more fully the depth and amount of frustration Briar is trying to express. Similarly, Briar never threatened to dox Prim. She has, in fact, repeatedly tried to point out that Prim should be protecting her online information and be more aware of how to stop others from finding out about her private life/situation. These statements, however, have since been warped by Prim and her followers to come off as a threat on her life. Briar's statements above aren't a threat of doxxing. She's never once posted Prim's personal information or told others to find it or use it in any way. She has, however, searched for Taglocks on Prim, something witches especially are known to look for. In that search she found more than she was even looking for, despite trying to tell Prim repeatedly to stop being so open online with the information she posts about herself. Doxxing though is not racist. It is something used by them, sure, but it is not inherently racist.

Additionally, Prim has raised money, sure, but I still have not seen any actual receipts as to her *actually* donating it to any public or private organizations. This, for me, is highly suspect. In reality, we still have no idea where that money is. Whereas with Briar, she took no money in for a couple days on her readings and instead merely asked that those requesting a reading first submit proof of donation to an organization linked in the post. She raised substantial money for the BLM movement, but no one seems to want to bring that up in all of their "she's a racist" discourse. Also, the observation that someone is misleading or gaslighting their following is not racist. Just because she said Prim was recently using her BLM reblogs & promotions to do it *this time* still does not make it racist. Questionable wording is just something the reader disagrees with, in my opinion, and should be addressed as such.

I'm not going to lie, I do feel a little frustrated at this point. I was really hoping to come to you and see that you had concrete proof to offer that Briar is a racist. I do understand that you have your own reasons for feeding into the assumptions and twisted outlooks already taken on Briar's words, but I don't have enough energy in me to fully swallow my tongue on this one. I really do hope that you at least consider what I've said here. I'm not sure what I can say at this point because all of the information I've read from you thus far has been purely conjecture or assumptions or just "not feeling right" about the wordings on a single post. A racist, from my perspective, is not something I would ever feel comfortable calling someone off of this lack of evidence.

I understand it is hard to separate preconceived notions from your mind when reading through the words of others, but I really do miss when you were more open to the words of others. If I could ask one thing of you, it'd be to please try to read Briar's post again but from the perspective of seeing it how it was meant to be: a witch who has been on the butt end of Prim's harassment for going on three years now. She is tired of the wild accusations and constantly having to defend herself, and even when she supplied her proof a couple years ago, no one wanted to hear her. She has, largely, given up on being heard, and now screams into what feels like a void when attacked.

I, personally, have seen your willingness to talk things through, despite how aggressive you can come off at times in the things you say, so I think that's why I was genuinely so surprised to see your comments on some of her posts. But I do think her response and refusal to further directly engage with you is warranted and her right. Unfortunately, it is hard to tell who is genuinely open to talking and who is just trying to bait and add to the problem. And with how aggressive your comments were, 8 honestly think she most likely was responding from a place of "oh look another young Prim follower here to bait and berate me." I don't think she looks down on you for your age, but her views are likely a reflection of the fact that a lot of 18yos follow Prim and have openly harassed her without even asking for her input on the matter.

At this point, I would like to talk about the second half of the title of this particular post. Grooming. This is a very serious allegation against Prim that I have not spoken on previously because I had no proof that it was happening. With this person's permission, I would like to share how exactly they wound up fighting Prim's battles for her.

I've been rather stressed out today and I need to rant a bit so I'm sorry in advance. Starting early this morning I started looking for information about SB8 that went into effect today in Texas. I was hoping with everything I had that the supreme Court would have actually done their job and stepped up the block this ridiculous bill, deep down I knew that the stacked supreme Court we had wasn't going to do it but I was hopeful. I've been worried about it for a while not only for the women and clinics in texas that it affects directly, but also for just foreshadowing effect on how things are going forward in America. I am honestly truly scared about the way that America is going as a whole. It seems as if we're heading closer to closer to a point where this won't be be a country of democracy for the all of it citizens but a country where everything is set by a radicalized group who has the money and influence to cheat their way into getting their views met. Because let's be honest SB8 it just trial program for them to see if they can make a law that will block the security of rights provided by an already established law. It's not really a far leap to think that once they get their way with this that the Texas right wingers will try to use the same process to skirt securities or put limits on securities afforded for gay people, transgender people, religious and racial minorities, etc etc by blocking the protections. I know just saying that it sounds like a crazy reach but ask me a couple years ago if a state would allow $10,000 lawsuits turning in friend, family, neighbors, strangers for using a legally protected right,well I would have told you you're a bat s*** crazy on the spot. it's almost like they're giving a reward to crush a group that the ruling party doesn't agree with. I mean I don't really think it's too far off to say it's not terribly different than when when people turned in Jewish people to the Nazis for rewards and benefits. An I hate using a Nazi reference more than anything, it just feels wrong to bring that group but it just feels like it seems to fit. The situation. It's weird like truly weird to feel so afraid of the direction your country is heading all the while seeing other people in your same country who are only happy but some how almost gleeful about the direction it's going.
