Fandom needs to relearn that you can criticize the things you love without automatically "canceling" it or making it "cringe" for continuing to like it or pulling a Cinema Sins by nitpicking arbitrary bullshit. I truly think the reason why fans are so infamously bad at criticism (both giving and receiving) is because we as a society have lost the art of nuance and critical thinking as a whole. People claim they're "criticizing" a character's poor choices, when in actuality, it's thinly veiled demonized bashing. People bend over backwards to defend a character they love who's heavily criticized for poor representation/harmful stereotypes/bad writing choices, while also being just as guilty towards characters they don't like.

That and the whole "projecting oneself onto a character/story for so long, it becomes an integral part of your personality, therefore a criticism of said thing is a direct attack of YOU." Which is false, obviously, but fandom has yet to understand that.

And frankly, there are times and places where criticism is NOT necessary as a whole. It's one thing to unpack why a story is riddled with problematic tropes, toxic behaviors that are romanticized, shitty plot devices, etc. It's another to disproportionately bicker and argue and pick apart an older story/characters, whose ultimate sin is simply being dated and not holding up with today's standards.

An uncomfortable feeling settled in his chest as he watched Y/N smile at the platinum-haired boy, her hand resting on his upper arm. She was blissfully unaware of the burning gaze that was fixated on her and the Slytherin.

“You have no right, Remus,” he mumbled to himself, extremely grateful that there was nobody within earshot to hear him talking to himself. “You broke it off with her. You’re too old.”

“Y/N, can you stay behind a moment, please?” Despite his lips being pulled up into a soft smile, his eyes held a different emotion.

“Sure, Professor!”

Once everyone had piled out of the room, Y/N’s friends saying they’ll see her in Potions, Remus finally broke the news.

“This can’t go on,” he sighed, running a hand through his hair. “There’s so many reasons why it can’t.” The pain in her eyes was something he would never be able to erase from his mind, no matter how much he wanted to get rid of it.

“Got ya,” she smiled, holding back tears. “Is that all, Professor?”

Hearing her use that title whilst they were alone struck a new type of pain in his heart and all he could do was nod.

“That’s all, Y/N.”

That was four months ago, and the Professor had never felt worse about anything. But he knew it was for her own good; he’s too old for her, at least in his mind.

Y/N had never known the reason behind his sudden distaste towards their relationship, instead being left to assume that he had met someone else; met someone his own age.

The first month had been the worst. Constant overthinking, skipping classes and the feeling over never being wanted again.

The second month things got better, not much but a bit. Her parents were still on at her, as they had always been, about finding a powerful wizard boyfriend. It didn’t matter either way. It isn’t exactly like she could have told them who she was seeing. It just stung more with her mother telling her if she doesn’t find someone now, she never will.

The third month was when things started looking up. She was feeling better, less insecure and was finally spending time with other men, most notable, Draco Malfoy. The sleepless nights were over, and she was beginning to feel better.

“Sorry I’m late,” Lupin rushed as he entered the classroom, hair messy and dark bags under his eyes.

Y/N’s hand dropped from Malfoy’s arm, falling to her side which didn’t go unnoticed by the DADA teacher; things like this made him feel happy yet guilty. She deserves better than an old professor in his eyes and she shouldn’t be sad about him leaving.

He caught the Y/H/C-haired girl’s eyes as she moved to take her usual seat in front of his desk. Usually, she would desperately avoid his sight, something that pained him, but it was different today. For what reason, he didn’t know, or at least he didn’t until Draco took a seat beside her.

“You look lonely, Y/N/N,” he smirked. “Want some company?”

“I’d love some,” she returned his smile, one Lupin longed to be directed at him once again.

It had been about a week since he had seen Y/N last, and he wished the first time that he saw her again hadn’t been like this.

Malfoy and she were leaning against the wall outside of him classroom, both unaware of his presence. They were talking about something, something that he couldn’t hear and he was about to interrupt them until he saw the blonde lean in and capture her lips on his own. Eyes wide, Lupin turned and left, not hearing or seeing what had happened immediately after.

“Look guys,” Seamus laughed, noticing the letter that Y/N had received mere seconds ago. “Y/S/N got herself a howler!”

Y/N, who was now blushing at everyones attention on her, let out a sigh and she unwillingly opened it, aware of the consequences if she did not. The entire halls attention was on her as it began to scream:

“Y/N Y/S/N! How dare you reject Lucius Malfoy’s son! Draco is a lovely young boy, how dare you break his heart like that? He was nothing but nice to you and you won’t even let him take you out on a date? How ungrateful are you? You’re nothing but a frigid little girl, no man will ever love you!”

“Okay mother,” Y/N muttered, watching as the letter tore itself up. “I think I’m going to go.” Were her final words, not waiting for her friends replies before leaving, not realising who had followed her.

Tears slipped down her cheeks as Y/N sat herself on the step outside of the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, somewhere she had come out of habit. She always ended up here when she was upset. Nobody was come, it was early morning on a weekend.

“Y/N?” A familiar voice sounded around the corner. Of course he knew exactly where she had gone. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” she was clearly lying, he knew her too well for her to lie to him. “I just want to be alone.”

A sigh left Lupin’s lips as he took a seat beside her, robe almost tripping him which would have been comical if not for the situation at hand. “She’s not right, you know?” He chimed in.

“What?” Y/N turned to face the man she was once involved with, only for him to already be looking at her. “What do you mean?”

“You’re not unlovable,”

Confusion enveloped her body as Remus took Y/N’s cheek in his hand, finger roaming the flesh. “I love you,” without hesitation his lips pressed gently against her own, not thinking of the consequences. He enjoyed the way she kissed back immediately, being too used to his lips against hers.

But she pulled back moments after. “No you don’t,” she said. “If you did you wouldn’t have gotten rid of me.” Her hand reached up to snatch his hand from her cheek, missing the pain that flashed across his face.

“Can we talk in my office?”

“I guess,”

And so she followed him, noticing how dishevelled he looked along with the locking of the door. Despite his messy look, he was still attractive.

“What is it?”

“I didn’t do it to hurt you. I didn’t do it for any reason other than wanting to protect you,” he admitted, flicking his wand to give her a seat as he took one beside her, tilting it so he could face her. “You need somebody your own age, somebody that won’t have to disappear once a month, someone that isn’t me.”

Y/N’s eyes widened at his confession, unsure as to how to respond. “But I don’t want anyone else. I love you and only you. You’re the only one I want.”

“I’m sure Malfoy would beg to differ. I’ve seen to way you two act.” He swallowed deeply, looking anywhere but her face.

“Are you jealous?”

The professor hesitated. “Yes, I want you to be only mine. I know that’s selfish but you’re all I can think about, you’re all I want. Hurting you was the last thing I ever wanted to do.”

His hand reached to grasp Y/N’s own, intertwining their fingers whilst he enjoyed the blushing. His spare hand reached for her cheek once again as he spoke. “Forgive me?” His breath fanned across her lips, having moved closer to her face.

“Always,” she pushed her lips against his, something she had missed dearly. “I missed you so much.” She murmured as he pulled her into his lap, her arms wrapping around his neck as they kissed.

“Me too, darling,” he groaned at the feeling of her pressing against his area. “Let me show you how much.”

I never watched Winx as a kid, so I really hope I don't sound like an idiot for asking this. What exactly does the Netflix Winx series do wrong besides giving it the "dark and gritty" makeover?

So like. There are a lot of problems here and I’ll try to tackle them. I haven’t finished the reboot because I have difficulty getting through things I like, much less things I hate watch. But anyway, this gets long and is separated into parts. 

Let’s start with it’s issues on it’s own and not as an adaptation: 

It’s still pretty garbage. Not ‘the worst thing ever’. Interesting enough. But it does have problems. Some racist and homophobic and fatphobic writing. The characters range from ‘kind of a jerk’ to ‘straight up assholes who will cause physical harm for petty reasons’. The nicest one so far is Terra, but even she kinda snaps and strangles a guy with her plant powers. 

Now on to things it fails on as an adaptation!

First, the whitewashing!

Of the six main characters, 3/6 were poc-coded in the original cartoon(I say ‘coded’ because they’re not Humans from Earth but still). Aisha is black, Flora is Latina, and Musa is Chinese. 

Aisha is the only one who remains black. I’ve heard varying testimonies on Musa’s actor, but the ‘best’ I’ve heard is that she’s 1/4 Singaporean and white passing. I don’t have the authority to say if that’s in the clear or not so I’m leaving that to other fans. 

Flora gets the worst though. They cast a white woman to play her. Then backtracked and said ‘oh, this isn’t Flora. We replaced her with her white cousin Terra’. Yeah you can see the problem there. 

Characters they got rid of entirely! I’ll only discuss characters that showed up in the first two seasons of the original show since Fate only has one season. (I’d say just the first, but they included Aisha who is from Season 2). 

Let’s see. They got rid of Tecna, one of the main six girls. It’s likely because they’re going for a more ‘bootleg Hogwarts’ vibe, and Tecna’s magic being heavily technology based ruins that. So she’s just tossed altogether. 

The boys! Oh my god my boys! Sky and Riven are the only ones who were kept in, while Brandon, Timmy and Helia got scrapped and replaced as well. The other boys like Dane and Sam? Totally could’ve just given them those names and been done with it. 

Then there’s Icy, Darcy and Stormy! I’m counting them together because that’s exactly what Fate did! The three Witches are villains in the series, and instead of keeping a trio, they combined her into a single character. Beatrix. 

I think Silva was also an amalgamation of the remaining Headmaster/Headmistresses and a few other staff members but considering they condensed it to just one school it kind of makes sense. 

Sometimes there’s just a name change like the Headmistress of Alfea was changed to Farah Dowling instead of Faragonda which is so pointless. 

Overall there’s other minor characters that don’t show up, like the rest of the school staff, Mirta and Lucy, so on and so forth. But I’m less upset about that. Still upset though because I love them. 

Personality changes! And romance drama!

Oh boy. Oh boy oh boy oh boy. 

I already mentioned how they made everyone an asshole in this reboot. In the original show, the only protagonist that was consistently a jerk was Riven, but he was more of the ‘grumpy but still a good guy’ type of asshole. 

Let’s compare just one character and her relationships to others!

Stella in the Original Cartoon: Preppy and sometimes a little vain, could be blunt to the point of insulting, but never malicious. Very sweet and loves her friends. She and Bloom are best friends, Stella having been the one to bring Bloom into the world of Magix and will do everything she can to make sure she’s safe. Stella’s love interest is Brandon, who is bffs with Bloom’s love interest Sky. Stella and Brandon are very cheesy and cute together. They aren’t usually jealous, and can even make a competition out of ‘how many phone numbers can I get?’. 

Stella in Fate: Total bitch to all her roommates. She’s getting the common ‘my mom’s a bitch who puts pressure on me so I’m going to be a bitch’ thing that’s become popular now. Since Brandon was deleted, they put her in a love triangle with Bloom and Sky, Sky being Stella’s ex bf. And despite breaking up with him, Stella sees him just talking to Bloom and decides ‘Hm. Let’s prey on her insecurities that she doesn’t belong here, and manipulate her into leaving!’ Which includes walking through a forest where there was recently a man attacked and viscously killed by some kind of monster, so I’m putting it up to attempted murder. 

Yeah. Everyone’s kind of like that. It’s awful. 

Bloom’s backstory and parents!

Okay, this can kind of fall under both ‘personality changes’ and ‘plot changes’ but it deserves it’s own section. 

In the Original Cartoon, Bloom’s home kingdom was attacked and destroyed by villains searching for something called the Dragon Flame. Bloom was a baby with said power, so her older sister sent her to Earth, a world without Magic, where she would be safe and hidden. Mike and Vanessa find her and adopt her, loving her and raising her very well. They are good parents. Bloom learns she has powers when she meets Stella, and instinctively uses Magic to protect her. 

In Fate, the only thing really the same is that Bloom was sent to Earth. I’m a little unclear on why, but instead of giving her loving adoptive parents, they made her a Changeling with emotionally abusive parents! Let me elaborate a little: Instead of adopting Bloom of their own free will, Mike and Vanessa’s real child died in the hospital and was secretly replaced with Bloom. Her parents are also, as mentioned, emotionally abusive. So much so that Fate!Bloom’s powers first manifested by setting them on fire in the middle of the night.

Fun. Ain’t it? 

Now onto plot points!

Again, pretty much the only thing the same is ‘Bloom discovers she has Magic, goes to another Dimension to learn at a school called Alfea. Gets into adventures with her Roomates while trying to figure out where she’s really from’. 

The whole ‘Burned ones’ were.... not a thing at all. There wasn’t any kind of ‘barrier’ to keep out ‘dangerous creatures’ or anything. 

I’m not going to go over every single subplot but that was just. No. They were easily allowed to go outside the school. 

The whole vibe

This is a big thing to talk about. While the reboot went for ‘dark and gritty’ over the bright colors and sparkles, it also went for ‘bootleg Hogwarts’ instead of anything interesting. 

In the reboot, the merging of Magic and Technloogy is mostly like. ‘Yeah we go to school in this old ass castle and we don’t use guns in weaponry class, but we have smartphones and social media and Harry Potter!”. 

In the Original??? The whole world was very Magitech. It was a combination of Magic and Scifi! Kinda Steven Universe style actually. 

The transformations!!!

Look. LOOK. Winx Club is a Magical Girl show! They have those beautiful transformation sequences that last a solid minute or so of screen time. And they also have like. At least one new Transformation a Season, which comes with an ungodly amount of different cool outfits. 

The reboot? One transformation sequence. And while the effects are nice, Bloom doesn’t even get a new outfit. Just a few flames coming off her that look vaguely like wings. 

SPEAKING OF! They are Faeries!!!! But they don’t have wings????? What????

Look idgaf about your effects budget you could’ve made the cheesiest shit like the live action Sailor Moon stuff and fans would’ve loved it!

Bonus: The fact that they didn’t have to change anything to make it ‘Dark’!

So like. Netflix decided to take all the color out of it, and make it ‘dark’ by having the characters smoke and drink and have sex and say swears. 

But they.... really didn’t have to! The original cartoon was plenty dark, despite it’s colorful aesthetic! If you wanted to do a more serious reboot, you could have easily done it by focusing more on those aspects. 

Hell, there are many fans who have done it. I’m one. I know a couple others as well.

SECRET: ivy is the golden girl, the good girl, the girl that never steps a foot out of line. her peers at springs park would’ve known that. she picked up all of the academic awards, did pretty well on the high school netball team, was captain of the dance club and even head girl at one stage. she’s the last person ANYBODY would expect to have insecurities or struggle socially; and in a way, they’re right. she’s very good with people but she never truly feels like she can be herself without having her army of friends turn against her or being belittled by her mother. that’s why on instagram she’s taken on a completely different persona; it’s technically a harry potter fan account, but she’s really connected with people from all different fandoms and places on there. it’s the one place she can be herself. with her handle being @.lunanogood (a play on her favourite character), she’s known as luna there. and, ironically, that’s where she’s the most ivy she ever is.

Jude - They’re acquaintances at MOST. Ivy barely remembers sitting next to him in Year 10 Chemistry classes but Jude does. They’re from different ends of the brutal high school hierachy; if Springs Park did homecoming, Ivy would have been homecoming Queen. Jude’s an introvert with no friends in his own year and often got bullied. He’s been crushing on her since the start of high school but has never plucked up the courage to talk to her. Ivy now lives in his flat at St Judes and has noticed him a few times but they haven’t had much interaction since then.  Kun - An ex-boyfriend who’s two to three years older than her. He was her first boyfriend and she felt so cool when they started dating. She had no idea at the time how possessive he’d be. If she was at dance practice, she’d get texts. If she was out with friends, she’d need to tell him which friends and where. She was genuinely in love with him but started to feel suffocated; for a short period of time, she wasn’t herself and became more closed off but this quickly stopped when it ended. 

OPEN FOR MALES 

Unrequited Crush - Someone who had a crush on her either currently or back in high school but she never felt the same way. Bonus points if they got a bit shitty about it and aren’t the nicest to her.  Rebound boyfriend - I think after Kun she would’ve just wanted to go with anybody because she felt lonely and didn’t know how to channel her emotions. Bonus points if they’re older than her, because I’m noticing a trend. If you don’t want them to full on date her, maybe they were hooking up. 

OPEN FOR FEMALES 

3-4 Girls - I think they’d be pretty young given that she’s only 18, but maybe a group of girls who were in the same circle as her in high school and they’ve now all moved up to St Judes together. I don’t think they would be the mean girls or anything, but just generally popular through being nice/good pupils.

Dance Friends/Rivals - Anyone that does dance. I really want her to be familiar with the people on her course; she’s pretty new but takes dancing very seriously and I think there could be a lot of potential in connections here.  Someone she speaks to online - THIS!! is one I really want. There could be one or two people but she uses the username @.lunanogood because she used to be a HP fan account :’) but it’s where she’s really herself and steps away from being the popular girl/the pressures her mother puts on her etc.

“I think it’s great that you finally told your mom about what’s happening,” Jungkook said as he walked into the bathroom. You were currently inside, brushing your teeth. 

You make eye contact with him through the mirror, trying to smile through the toothpaste covering your lips and the toothbrush sticking out of your mouth. 

He grabbed his toothbrush from out of the cup and started brushing his own teeth. You hadn’t stopped looking at him as he did this, completely forgetting what you were in the bathroom for. You didn’t realize you had been staring at him until he bumps you with his shoulder, meeting your eyes through the mirror once again. You quickly finished, finally breaking eye contact.

“I’m going to take the couch tonight…you can have the bed,” you meekly said, ducking your head as you walked through the door. You were glad he didn’t say anything or argue with you.

Being around Jungkook still made you nervous, and you always felt embarrassed around him and even more so now that your mom revealed that he’s essentially broken your heart. It wasn’t something you’d ever wanted him to know. You actually didn’t even let him finis brushing his teeth before you walked down the hall and back to his room to grab your pillow and the blanket that Jungkook had been using on the couch. 

Jimin and Taehyung were still both at the studio, finishing up the album, since Yoongi had to leave quickly the other day without giving a reason why. But they were all friends and the album was ahead of schedule, so it wasn’t that big of a deal.

Settling onto the couch, it was quiet. You wondered if Jungkook was going to walk to the kitchen to get his nightly glass of water, but you must have been tired because you fell asleep. Whether he got that water or not, you’d never know.

You thought something felt off when you went to bed that night…and it wasn’t just because you took the couch. It wasn’t like you were exactly the most sound sleeper to begin with, but this was just something that made it even harder. 

In the time you’d been there, you’d woken yourself up with a scream twice,  but there was something new about the nightmare that you had that night. The scream this time was worse than it had ever been before. It was louder, and it took longer for you to wake up from it. You were stuck in your imagination. 

It was awful and actually just a stupid, stupid dream. You were laying on the ground, helpless, while Nic was a dementor from Harry Potter that was sucking out your soul—which is essentially what had been happening in your relationship with him.  

In fact, the only reason you awoke was because Jungkook shook you awake, for a while. “Y/N! Y/N! Wake up!”

There were tears streaming down your face when you opened your eyes to a very concerned looking Jungkook. He was quick to wipe the tears from your cheeks and comfort you in any way that he could. “So you want to talk about it?” He whispered, helping you sit up. 

You shook your head with a sniffle, letting the comfort from Jungkook wash over you. 

“Do you want to take the bed? I can sleep on the couch again. You seem to sleep better in the room…” What Jungkook didn’t realize was the fact that the room was so much like him and was full of his smell, so it automatically comforted you. Jungkook, regardless of what he did to you in high school, used to be your knight in shining armour. Yeah, he used to tease you and pull your hair, but at the end of the day, he had your back. And you still had his back even after how he treated you. 

“I’ll take the bed…but will you stay with me, Bun?” You asked, getting up and grabbing his wrists to bring him with you. “…at least until I fall back asleep?”

Jungkook didn’t exactly answer, but he let you drag him towards the bedroom anyways. Quickly, he asked himself, “I wonder when Tae and Chim are coming home? That would have been some scream for them to hear…”

When you settled under the covers, you waited for him to lay beside you. You took the side that you had slept on before. Jungkook stared at you for a few seconds before he hesitated to get under the covers as well. He was rigid as a board laying beside you until you told him to relax. “Bun, we used to take baths together for Christ’s sake…I think you can loosen up a little.” You could have taken your own advice while brushing your teeth earlier.

He turned his head to looked at you, before he looked at the ceiling again. “It’s different this time because I should tell you some things, but I’m not sure if it’s exactly the right time for it…” He admitted. You looked at him with a curious expression. You should have been trying to fall back asleep, but you were wide awake now, nightmare of Nic leaving your mind completely. 

Jungkook finally turned towards you, letting his body relax. You were both laying on your sides, facing each other. 

“What do you mean?”

“I mean I need to tell you why I was an asshole to you back in high school. Otherwise, I’m going to go crazy.”

You scrunched up your eyebrows at what he said. You didn’t need him to explain himself after all these years. You were both adults, and you were sure that he was just annoyed that you’d been following him around for years.

“No. Don’t look at me like that, Honey. This is something that I need to get off my chest. You should be me at me because you did nothing wrong. Listen, I can’t believe I’m admitting this to you, but I consider you my first love…the one that got away.”

You were surprised at what he admitted. You never once expected him to say that…especially because that was exactly who he was to you.

Continuing, he closed his eyes but grabbed your hand under the covers, “I was a jerk because when you got into high school, you stopped paying attention to me. I thought that it was something that I wanted. Hell, I even prayed for you to leave me alone! But when you finally did, I wasn’t happy. You were always mature for your age, and when all the girls around you were giving all of us older boys attention, you kept your distance. You didn’t even notice that boys were paying attention to you either. It started to become obvious to everyone that I wanted your attention, and the only way that I could get you to react to me in any way was to be mean and make you pay attention to me that way. Obviously, I liked you.”

Your mouth fell open about halfway through his speech. How were you supposed to respond to something like that? What you’d wanted to hear from him for your whole life, a confession, just happened, but it was past tense. And anyways, why were you even worried about it? Clearly relationships just weren’t for you. Nic and Jungkook proved that.

Jungkook bit his lip as he waited for some sort of reaction from you. When you failed to say anything and only continued to stare at him, he spoke again, “And since I’ve already shared so much, I might as well admit that I modelled the main character of my webtoon after you. I’d never payed attention to anyone as much as I did to you, so it was easy to draw her, my character I mean.”

You cracked a smile at that. Everything that he said to you was really flattering, especially the webtoon bit. “If I’m not mistaken, you used to draw me when we were little, too, but I was more of a typical manga-style character back then. I always believed in your dream to be an animator, you know. I was your biggest fan, Bun.”

“You’re not mad?” He subconsciously scooted closer to you as he asked this. You noticed, however.

“I’m not mad. If there’s any man in the world I should be mad at, I think we know who it is.” There was not one inch of your body that still liked Nic. His face, although conventionally attractive, was ugly. You couldn’t even believe that you’d loved him. You’d fallen out of love a while back. It was even before you first started your escape plan. So, the slight increase in your heartbeat from Jungkook was not exactly unexpected, although it definitely was currently unwanted. 

“Well, I’m glad you found me again, Honey. Although, it fucking sucks that it had to be in this type of situation.” 

His eyes were closed again, but they shot open you grabbed his hand and placed it on your head.You looked at him with the cutest face you could muster. 

“Are you going to try to sleep again?” He asked, starting to play with your hair. It was exactly what you’d wanted when placing his hand there.

You took a deep breath, yawning in the process. “Yeah.”

“You don’t want me to sing?” 

With a small smile, you replied, “Can’t you play with my hair and sing?”

He scoffed. “You’re lucky I still feel kind of guilty. Now close your eyes and listen.”

Jimin was waiting behind Taehyung as he unlocked the door to the apartment at 3:30 in the morning. They’d been at the studio all night, but the album was finally complete. It felt amazing, but they were all in need of sleep. Yoongi was groaning for the last couple hours about getting back to Cherry and Jimin just couldn’t take it. He could handle lovey-dovey couples, but they were a lot to handle sometimes. He wasn’t an idiot—he knew that Yoongi had left the other day to go to her. Jimin loved Cherry, he really did, but all this stress about the album was making him bitter. He hadn’t had a girlfriend in years, and he hadn’t gotten laid in months.

It was nice having at least one friend that was single, but even Jungkook was starting to get closer to you, who was his childhood “unrequited” love. 

“Yah…It’s good to be home,” Taehyung said a little too loudly, cringing at himself before walking into his bedroom. He’s gotten the master bedroom when Yoongi moved out, and it had its own bathroom. Lucky fuck. 

Jimin closed the front door and immediately went to the living room to see who was on the cough tonight. He was surprised to find it empty. Maybe one of you was in the bathroom?

But when he walked to the bathroom, the lights were off. 

Did Jungkook send you off to Cherry’s again? It was almost a waste because he just ended up singing to you over the phone to get her to fall asleep anyways. Speaking of that, literally none of them knew that he knew how to sing. Jimin was still shook.

Walking past Jungkook’s room to get to his own, he had to backtrack when he passed the door because he could have sworn that he’d seen two people in the bed. He wasn’t wrong. There were, in fact, two people in the bed, but they were only taking up about as much space as one person needed. 

Jimin had to take a picture of them. Jungkook had you wrapped in his arms, fingers softly resting between strands of her hair. Judging by the nearness, Jimin assumed that your legs were tangled together. Your head was cradled into his chest, hands tightly tucked between your bodies. 

It was cute, he had to admit—especially for two people who hadn’t seen each other in years. What really set him off was the fact that Jungkook’s lips were almost pressed against your forehead, brushing your skin with every breath he took. 

Jungkook didn’t want to admit it, but he had it bad for you...even now. Jimin wondered if maybe the reason he’d never dated anyone before was because he’d still been hung-up on the girl currently in his arms…

On a completely separate note, he’d sure be using this photo for personal gain in the future.

the thing I HATE the most about the harry potter fandom (potterheads)

I don’t do a lot of "drama” on my blog. most of the time I just post some art but now I’m done with you guys! (no I’m not gonna be talking about “you-know-who”, the mysterious “gender critical” author of the harry potter books. or maybe not today)

1. “ELITIST” POTTERHEADS

 In our community, the potterheads who have read the books (they like to call themselves “the real potterheads”. that speaks volumes about their ego) like to look down on the harry potter films as though they were the shittiest film adaptations ever made and not even good films. First and foremost, the level of DISRESPECT, guys ! Besides, I know exactly why you’re doing that ! You want to be seen as intellectuals who prefer “elitist” medias such as books over “pop culture”. <<Because pop  (air quotes) “culture” is for the masses. hew ! >> If you were not blinded by your elitist big ass ego, you would’ve realised that the Harry Potter films are one of the best - if not the best - film adaptations from books ever (ex: Percy Jackson’s and Artemis Fowl’s fans know what I’m talking about).

2. “It’S nOt LiKe ThAt In ThE bOokS” type of whinging 

I don’t say that we cannot make valid criticism about the films (ex: treatment of Ginny Weasley) but most of the time, the critics of “elitist potterheads” revolve around the “iT’s NoT LiKe In ThE bOoKs” type of arguments. 

So let’s address the main point of my argumentation: 

THE QUALITY OF AN ADAPTATION DOESN’T DEPEND ON ITS FIDELITY TO THE ORIGINAL WORK ONLY.

First and foremost, adaptations which are quite similar to the original work they’re based on, aren’t necessarily good. I would go as far as to say that they are unsurprisingly bad. Let’s take for example the Japanese live action film adaptation of ‘Death Note’ released in 2006. I’m a big fan of ‘Death Note’, and yet I felt like I was attending a bad cosplay contest when watching this film. Almost everything is exactly like in the manga, but cheap.

More generally, such adaptations carry no ambitions, but to satisfy fans. These kind of films can be successful and praised by the fans in question, but they are hardly good or even interesting.

Now here are some examples are film adaptations which are the furthest from faithful to the original work adapted but are yet considered as great films. Comics such as “Men In Black” and “The Mask” are indeed particularly dark in comparison to their adaptation. In these cases, modifications were made in the adaptation to enable a larger public to discover a work that they would have never known otherwise. For example, children who watched “The Mask” back in the 90’s must be all grown up now, and thus, can read the original work without being traumatised. However, if the film “The Mask” was as dark as the comics, it is most likely that most of these children wouldn’t have known either the film or the comics.

Finally, I think, we must asses the quality of an adaptation like we would for a ‘regular’ film. 

3. CUT SCENES (OR YOU DON’T NO SHIT ABOUT THE FILM INDUSTRY AND IT SHOWS)

On YouTube as well as on a lot of social networks, a lot of cut scenes of Harry Potter films can be found. Scenes that, according to Potterheads, should have been part of the film as if the directors decided to delete them on a whim, which is utterly wrong.

First and foremost, in the American film industry, the final cut doesn’t belong to the directors rather to the producers of a film. Only the most popular directors such as “Tarantino and Friends” are granted this final cut. Although the final cut lines up with the director’s cut most of the time, I’d just like to remind you that almost all directors are strings attached when it comes to the final edit of a film. And if you think such “minor” modifications to a film cannot ruin it, go see the remake of Rollerball (2002) which - as evidenced, by a lot of questionnable edit choices-  ended up being nothing like it was supposed to be. We can speculate hours about how the “real film” looked like but, unfortunately,  we’ll never know.

All I want to say is whether a scene is removed from the film (or not) it is for a reason ! 

Moreover, books and films are two different mediums. 

In a book we must TELL and in a film we must SHOW. That’s why it is difficult to re-transcript internal thoughts in a film, for example. That’s why some scenes, line of dialogues and even characters can be necessary in the books but completely irrelevant in a film. 

 For example, the scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part. 2, in which Draco ran toward Harry and throw him his wand. This scene would have made it more self-evident that Draco deeply regrets his past as a Death Eater and would have taken Harry’s side if given the opportunity. However, his reluctance to join his parents in itself can be considered as a proof of repentance. Moreover, Tom Felton’s sad look conveyed all of Draco’s feelings. That’s what I call acting ! And  good one ! 

do we need unnecessary lines of dialogues to see the regret in his eyes ?????

To conclude, (1)  don’t be an elistist moron (2) don’t criticise a film too harshly if you don’t know shit about cinema and (3) WEAR A MASK !

I hope this doesn't come across as insulting: I was going through your blog the other day and I suddenly thought about how I've never seen a DX1 fan that seems to dislike DX1 so much lmfaoo. As an actual question though, is this one of those things where someone likes something but hates the fanbase, or do you have actual grievances with the game itself and its more of a guilty pleasure type thing (sorta like how people feel about Harry Potter)? as an aside re “I've never seen a DX1 fan that seems to dislike DX1 so much lmfaoo.” i was literally complaining to my family about dx a while back and they asked “uh are you SURE you like this series”and i felt so. interesting.

anyway. i adore and also dis-adore, well all of dx, but the topic of this post is just DX1. and i thought about it for a long long while, because i actually *have* been asked this before, and i just. never have a answer! but i THOUGHT about it. thought many THOUGHTS. and i think it boils down to this:

1: dx1 is, as many people have said, a very good RPG.

which, for me in this case means that you can play dx1 and get entirely different, nay even contradictory, stories, based on what you play and how you play and also what you bring to it.

for example: you can play the story of a white american man who becomes disillusioned with an ineffective and overreaching government and leaves it behind

for example: you can play the story of an experiment, placed into a system that was never designed for him (in fact, he’s the one who’s been designed for it)

for example: the NSF - a black nationalist group of americans that, once again the second they got arms, triggered massive racially-motivated gun control laws that they are now rebelling against. their solidarity threatens the american system.

for example: the NSF - a far-right second amendment-ist group of separatists that have taken over the rural american west. their pervasive success threatens the american system.

for example: technology is too dangerous lets all go back to before we had cell phones that for sure will make it better

for example: *i* know. ill just seize control of the entire internet and let humanity be governed by a semi-malevolent AI who was just created about five minutes ago

and these are just a few examples out of hundreds you could make. i like some of them. i deeply dislike others. which brings me to point 2...

2: INTERPRETATION

The past decade has been a hell of a century. What has that got to do with anything? there are people out there, in real life, who really believe stuff that is every bit as, how do you say, dumbfuck stupid as the worst fever dream deus ex could come up with. im not even going to reference some of the inane things people honestly with their whole ass hearts believe today.

enter deus ex 1, a game who’s entire premise is “what if every conspiracy theory was real?”

enough said.

okay not enough said i have more.

because dx1 has some very interesting things it says with its conspiracies! and, well, interpretation. people believe dumb things, and people believe less dumb things, and then there are real life issues that we could be using - im pulling one out of a hat and going with cambridge analytica - but instead, the most common focus of this game is on hee hee hoo hoo illuminati aliens. dx1 stops about two inches short of some real unforgivable “ha ha what if THIS conspiracy was real too” shit but still.

i forgot what i was talking about.

anyway. conspiracies are rampant these days, and they are also being weaponized by some very dangerous people. the kind of people who openly want people like me dead. so im not very fond of deus ex’s tendency to present a world where all conspiracies are real as Neutral. there is no value judgment about conspiracies. there is no examination on approaching this stuff. you are in fact narratively rewarding for believing in every little conspiracy bit. there’s never NOT a conspiracy. so yeah. i hate that. i hate that we have really cool game that says some frankly BOLD things about wealth and power, and we cant talk about or examine this because the exact same mechanic that allows this means we must also accept that secretly the Illuminati rules the world. what the hell, man.

and DONT EVENT GET ME STARTED RIGHT NOW on “hee hee hoo hoo what if the global pandemic.... was secretly.... created as a weapon...........” because i will literally combust.

and these things matter! i know the trend these days is to somehow pretend that fiction doesnt impact reality (???) but i had to deal with stupid fucking elon goddamn virus-denying fuck musk using dx1 to blather on twitter early, what, april? how do i come back from that! i have to live knowing that elon musk’s insanity was in fact actually really influenced at least to some degree by on of his favorite games deus ex 1! i have to actually think about while i type whether or not deus ex 1′s insistence on rewarding you for believing grey death was a Hoax actually caused real harm to real employees of Elon Fuck! its like the “damn bitch you live like this?” meme except its me looking at my own train of thoughts.

so yeah, i dont like dx1 on that score, despite the fact that i would like what it could do with that power.

its cavalier, i think. thats what i dont like there. its a very cavalier denial of responsibility to create this world with this narrative and not put in any controls on the kind of damage you can do.

this point is the main reason i desperately hope they dont rerelease/remaster it. right now the only people who care are like. well, not no-one, but you know. certainly not a lot. i dont have to deal with - well i started to type an example Twitter Hot Take and it was so horrifying I think if I wrote it I might actually black out.

three, i like the characters. although i dont think i would like them nearly as much without invisible war. for me, and i know its Unpopular Opinion hours, but for me i really do like IW the most. DX1 is the reward for your behavior, and IW is the inevitable punishment. by which i mean to say, dx1 rewards you for all this stuff that ive spent paragraphs prattling on about how much I dislike, and IW comes along and shows you the broken, corrupted, twisted versions of those things that you had. and then as an extra fuck you, decides that all those hundreds of wonderful RPG storylines? they dont fucking matter. you didnt matter, your conspiracy nonsense didnt matter, your special blood didnt protect you and the person you thought you were was a lie that doesnt exist in a future thats a little harder. its fucking fantastic. DXIW fucks hard not even gonna lie. and, speculating at the moment, i think that may be why a lot of people really loathe DXIW’s story/theme components. everyone tries to say they dont exist, which is just. blatantly not true. they exist, they just are horrific if you were used to DX1′s entire philosophy. IW is hard game. its just hard on everyone. i dunno. i do love to crack open a character completely and see whats on the inside.

and another thing IW did conspiracy so much better imo. even its silly hee hee hoo hoo ones are set up to be either deeply sinister or else tragic. and most the time you either cant do anything about it, or cant effectively change things. i dont know. im getting off track and i have to think more deeply about this one before i can present it in a more convincing way. i just find it interesting at the moment.

also three, i love deus ex because im head over heels for anna navarre. however she is evil and also a cop so i hate deus ex. cruel and unusal punishment.

Oh and yes. “is this one of those things where someone likes something but hates the fanbase”. there are large swaths of the wider group of people who love dx1 that i wouldnt approach even if you offered to let me direct the deus ex movie. however, they also generally dont approach me either, so. i tend to live in relative peace.

1. You can capture any smell in the world into a candle. What is it?

The smell of the forest after a rainy night, where the ground is still damp but the pine seems to have been awoken and the air is fresh from isolation and lingering winter from being at such a high elevation. There’s a hint of campfire burning in the undertones.

2. You can bring something back from extinction, whether that’s a dodo or a discontinued chocolate bar from your childhood. What is it?

Part of my instinct is to say “humanity’s belief that we can work together for a better future” and the other half of me says “Taco Bell’s Quesalupa”

3. What fictional world did you always wish you could escape to?

As a kid it was Harry Potter, my best friend and I would play the video games and just self-insert ourselves and like twenty OCs and characters we loved and play “as them” instead of Harry. Which now that I think about it was absolutely what got me into fanfiction. I was just so frustrated in school all of the time I longed for the idea of Hogwarts. I also made up a lot of worlds as a kid! I actually had a mural painted on my wall for most of my childhood that was a big fantasy scene set up with a castle and a forest with fairies, unicorns, elves, etc. and I’d fall asleep pretending I lived in the mural. I’ve been yearning from day one my friends.

4. If you did, say, fall into a portal to another fantasy world with like dragons and swords, what would you consider fighting to come back for? Would you?

My boyfriend because I’m a sap! But then I’d be down for us to go back in as long as I had a camera on me because SO COOL.  

5. What would you love to study if there were no tuition costs, no exams, no pressure to be hireable - or why not?

No exams = astronomy. I love space and I’m so fascinated by it but as someone who’s really bad at anything science or math related, I just want to sit in classes and learn about it. No tuition costs = just writing extensive research papers analyzing different movies and shows. My favorite essays I wrote in college were either literature interpretations (ex: Pride and Prejudice through a feminist/marxist lens), the making of the Lord of the Rings series, and a feminist analysis of the Disney Princess film franchise using quantitive and qualitative research. I’d love to do more of that and just take classes that related to it (I would love to do one on religion/myths and the 100 for example).

6. Advertisements are now illegal. What do you fill the empty billboards with?

TAKE THE BILLBOARDS DOWN. Jk mmm. Probably like some type of activism thing either about the environment? Or something peaceful/visually interesting so that people felt inspired when they saw it! So idk maybe pictures or something historical that’s from that location specifically?  

7. Best way to eat a potato?

Beyond just saying “every way,” at the end of the day I’m a basic and a sucker for french fries. But I will go on record and say my mom makes the best mashed potatoes and if you’re doing a baked potato don’t forget to hit the ends and roll it before cutting it open #just idaho things.

8. You have an unlimited home improvement budget and full creative control. What fun and zesty nonsense do you do to your house or workplace?

Oh THIS is a thrilling question. A really elaborate bar area so we could easily make all of our own cocktails and host parties. A room for all of our Disney memorabilia that we collect so it would need room for pins, posters/artwork, figurines. Probably Haunted Mansion or Tomorrowland themed. Honestly the living room would look straight out of a 50′s/60′s retro future modernist house. This isn’t even that wild but I just need a lot of surface area so I can have the coffee-table book collection of my dreams. Also a huge makeup room and office area for me to work in.

9. I’m running out of dinner ideas. Pls link me your favourite recipe.

Making every thought and creative idea I have take over myself. Never stopping thinking about how things are made, how I could make it, what feeling it gives me. Immediately understanding colors and fonts and aesthetics so that I can try and create the worlds and ideas in my head. Hi, yes! I apologize in advance, this is super long I’m afraid!

So first of all, I want to make it VERY clear that I don’t endorse sending hate to people, even if you despise them, and I am not intending to spam any social media she may have with hate because that’s simply inexcusable.

So here’s the thing: the whole thing just personally leaves a bad taste in my mouth because they had a sex scene years ago in a film that was directed by Bill’s ex-wife, Maggie Carey. It just really weirds me out because that was several years ago, and obviously I don’t know Maggie beyond the fact she’s a director and was married to Bill, but if I were her I’d be more than a little pissed off because I’d be wondering if my husband had been seeing this woman the entire time. I don’t think Bill is the type but I frankly don’t know him personally and who knows? It just seems a little tasteless in a way, but hey whatever.

Firstly, in literally every photo I’ve seen of them together - grocery shopping, golden globes etc, - they both look like they’d rather be anywhere else. Especially tonight, you can see in videos when they turn away from the cameras, their smiles vanish and they look (for lack of a better description) kind of constipated. I know Bill has bad anxiety so that could be part of the reason, I don’t know. But it looks like they’re not even trying - he smiled much more genuinely when with his ex. You can tell when someone is half assing their smile and when it’s genuine, especially in their eyes or the way they’re smiling.

I’ve been having a twitter conversation with someone, they messaged me wanting to talk about the whole thing, and I’ve been discussing it with them for a few days now. Disclaimer here that I already knew this person because I spoke to them about a month or so ago because their friend met PJ at a comic con and she (the twitter girl) was talking about it, so we already knew of each other before this whole ordeal. Recently, however, they’ve been telling me stuff and showing me tweets/photos/stuff about R*chel and, hey, maybe I’m only seeing what they want me to see? Who knows? I’m not saying my impression that I have of her is the correct one, just my own personal impression thus far.

The first thing we noticed was the sheer amount of paparazzi photos and news stories. I have never seen someone be photographed so damn often while out shopping - so far in the last week alone, RB has been papped near enough every day. No one gets papped that often by accident. The person I spoke with on twitter informed me that it’s always the same people (backgrid) and that she’s probably calling them herself. Not even the kids from Stranger Things/Harry Potter get photographed this much, and they are WAY more famous and in demand than her*. This week alone it’s been grocery shopping (w/ Bill), then going out to lunch with her friends, then shopping for furnishings, and THEN lunch with her mother. All in the same week. This isn’t just a her thing, it’s in general, but no one cares if actors are shopping for shit or going out to lunch with their mothers, it’s really not exciting or interesting. So yeah, there seems to be some question as to whether or not she’s phoning the paparazzi herself.

*I had literally never heard of her before being a fan of Bill so... 🤷🏼‍♀️ She’s definitely not as famous as the ST kids are right now

Also, it’s interesting that in the eleven years he was married to Maggie, and in even the last few years where he’s really started to pick up career wise, he has hardly been photographed by paparazzi in public. The only time I can think of is when he was filming IT Chapter 2 and that was because it’s a major film and they were shooting outside in costume. There could be more but I doubt there’s loads going around. So yeah, I find it kinda questionable that only now is he getting papped this regularly.

Not only do I think calling the paparazzi on yourself is vain and straight up thirsty for attention, but if that IS the case (and I’m not saying it is), it’s incredibly disgusting to do that whilst out with someone who has REALLY bad panic attacks and social anxiety. You can see it in his face that he’s pissed off and annoyed about it.

This person I spoke with also made some remarks regarding both of their kids with other people. Apparently the only time RB ever goes out with her kid is to get them photographed with her or something, and that she’s literally never with her daughter. This could be bullshit for all I know. I haven’t really researched her daughter because, frankly, that would be creepy and I also don’t really care about her enough to give a shit.

We know that Bill has 3 daughters, and it just strikes me as odd that he made a big fuss about how he only saw them 5 days in summer of 2018 (due to Barry and IT filming) and how he was crying over it, and “I’m going to spend more time with my kids 😭” but then...you get a girlfriend instead? And you spend time with them instead? And even when I first read the interview where he said about missing his kids, like...dude, come on. That’s your own fault, no one is making you stay away from the kids, you and your wife have joint custody. In comparison also to RB, who’s kid is seemingly papped quite a bit with her, I’ve literally seen maybe two or three occasions where one of Bill’s kids have been papped, like that’s it. And that’s how it should be frankly.

Back to the person I spoke with, they have a friend in Tulsa who was there around the time the two were spotted at Starbucks together, and here’s apparently the tea: Bill apparently got coffee alone quite a few times, she arrived in Tulsa, they got coffee, and then she left Tulsa after like a day. This person’s friend said that they weren’t holding hands, and they barely even looked at each other the whole time. This is a kind of “her friend’s brother’s wife’s cousin” thing and could be false, however. And I honestly think that if you’ve got 3 kids and you make a HUGE fuss over not getting to see them because of YOUR work schedule, then you should be spending Christmas with them and NOT with your new side chick. The same goes for RB - if she was in Tulsa over Christmas, why was she not with her own kid?

There’s a whole kettle of accusations that could or could not be true about both of them frankly; she’s using him to restart her career, he’s insecure and he’s being taken advantage of, she’ll probably get his kids papped, blah blah blah. This honestly could be total bullshit so who the fuck knows at this point. The whole getting together before awards season as well is so obvious, like so many couples do that for good publicity during this time of year and it’s frankly laughable. It’s the same kind of situation as the Alison Sudol/David Harbour situation two years ago - they stepped out together at the Golden Globes etc. And look how that turned out!

And, to be honest, I get feelings about people. You know how sometimes you just get a feeling about someone and you try to push it aside but it gnaws at you? Yeah. It’s not concrete evidence but I’ll be honest, 97% of the time I’ve found that if I have a feeling about a person, I’m at least somewhat right. I had a gut feeling when the whole nonsense about Johnny Depp and Amber Heard started, and even when I was abused and harassed over it, I knew my gut was telling me that it was BS because it just didn’t feel right. And it turns out I was right in that case because it’s now come out that Heard was abusing him and that she’s almost certainly been lying the entire time about being abused. But I digress, I’m not here to talk about that. I don’t know why but I get a bad feeling/vibe about RB and, hey, I could be totally wrong, nothing is ever 100%! But right now that’s the vibe I get and i tend to go with what that gut feeling is telling me.

And before the accusations of “you’re just a bitter jealous fan” come flooding in (as they inevitably will), I can promise you that is not the case. I make jokes about being thirsty and shit, but that’s all they are - jokes. Come on, I’m 22 next week, do you really think I want to hook up with a 41 year old with 3 kids?? 😂 And besides that, there have been MANY actors I either crush on or admire who are either in relationships or married, and because I’m an adult I can respect that. Hell, most of the time, I start stanning their partner too! There’s literally only ever been one occasion where I had a crush on an actor and didn’t like the person they’re (now) married to, and that’s because I didn’t like her as a person. I can respect that they’re married and I wish them all the luck, but given that it’s been nearly 9 years now and I still don’t particularly like her (and I don’t crush on said actor now), it’s definitely not a “fangirl crush” thing. It’s just that sometimes you don’t like certain people - maybe you disagree with their views, their behavior, or maybe you just don’t like the vibe they give off. You can’t like everyone, and you can’t be liked by everyone, that’s just how it is.

So, to conclude, I want to just make it clear that while I’m not a fan, honestly all the power to them, like Bill is a grown ass man, he can do whatever he wants with his life for all I care, he doesn’t need fangirls online rushing to defend him or baby him. As Mrs Brown from Mrs Brown’s Boys said... “it’s your life, love, you’re entitled to fuck it up however you please”. (I’m not saying he IS fucking up his life, on the contrary he’s doing very well for himself, it’s just a saying)

Thus far on my Random-thon part 1

Excuse My Dust (1920) 

One of the top 10 films of 1920, a slapstick comedy about a retired race car driver who wants to get back into the game much to his wife's disapproval.

 It honestly hasn’t held up very well. The plot is actually too complex for a silent film, what with it’s added business espionage subplot, and winds up being ironically too wordy to be truly funny. The action is good though and the final car chase at the end still is exciting. 

The Desert Hawk (1944)

Before there was television, there was the film serial. A single story would be told in “chapters” ranging any where from 10 to 30 mins apiece, with each new episode shown once a week at the movie theater. The Desert Hawk is one of the more critically acclaimed serials of the 1940s. An Arabian nights type story about a sultan being replaced by his evil twin brother and forced to go into hiding as a Robin Hood-esque vigilante called The Hawk. 

This was a hoot to watch. It’s not particularly complex nor sophisticated, it’s basically an extended swashbuckler film with added cliffhangers. Ones which become increasingly more ridiculous as the show goes on. But the characters are charming in their vintage simplicity and well acted, even though the accents in this serial are all over the place :P. Props go the the film crew for getting POC leads, even if said leads aren’t in any way shape or form Arabic, but its the 40s and at least they’re trying. Also the romantic couple in the film is the most asexual paring I’ve ever seen in a show, its adorable. 

Mulan (1998)        

An animated Disney film about the Chinese legend of a famous female warrior who saved China from the Huns. 

Screw the remake! If you’ve never seen Mulan save yourself the money and just go watch the original instead. Funny, heartwarming, empowering without being preachy, and with plenty of action and catchy songs. I highly rate it as one of the better Disney Renaissance films. 

Jonny Quest

A 1960s animated tv show about a brilliant government scientist and his boyfr- I mean body guard, taking their two sons and pet dog on epic sci-fi spy adventures. 

Jonny Quest is one of those shows that’s highly revered among animators for being this groundbreaking show that paved the way for many other classic action series. You see it referenced and parody everywhere and.... it’s only okay. Yes the show in many ways is ahead of it’s time. There’s real guns, people can and do die, lots of action, and even has a POC among the leading cast. (A big deal for 1964) 

However, the show has also aged really, really badly in other regards. While Hadji is for the most part respectfully represented, it’s a crap shoot from episode to episode to how well non-white one off characters are treated. Ranging anywhere from “this person just happens to be a different race”, to well meaning but stereotypical caricatures, to blatant cringe-inducing casual racism. There’s also a severe lack of women in the show. Jade, a morally ambiguous mercenary and Race’s ex, is the only recurring female character. While it’s cool to see an independent WOC as the main female lead, she’s only in two episodes total and any other women are just extras there to move the plot along. Also yeah the stories aren’t that sophisticated. There’s plenty of action and mystery, but little in the way of character development and the show’s attempts at comedy are weak. (Bandit is annoying as fuck)      

I’m glad I watched the show. It’s an interesting bit of animation history and it’s fun spotting all the unintentional gay subtext between Race and Dr. Quest, but it’s not something I’ll ever go back to rewatch. There’s just nothing deeper beyond the shallow thrills to warrant coming back to it. 

A Very Potter Musical

I’m not a huge Harry Potter fan. I gave up on the books around the fourth novel, cause Cedric’s death made me so mad. And everything I’ve learned about HP since then has reaffirmed to me that I made the correct decision. However, Starkid’s musical series is the best kind of parody as it surpasses the source material to become it’s own thing. And it’s hilarious! Now I personally think the first AVP is the best one. Unfortunately the audio quality is crap. It’s a collage project, they don’t have a budget, and it was one of their first endeavors, so I can cut them some slack.

This was the first filmed sporting event in history. Filmed in 1894, originally 6 rounds of the fight were recorded but only one partial round remains intact.

I hold no real opinions on this one. It’s an interesting bit of history. No more. No less.

Suffer Bitch Ficlist

What This List Is: A collection of fics that I’ve read that absolutely fuck me up emotionally, and that I appreciated/loved/needed/have impacted me enough that I’ve saved them for re-reading. If these were paperbacks, the pages would have started falling out long before now.

That said, everything on this list has an emotional resolution (even the few incomplete ones I’ve chosen to include). Nothing on this list is the kind of emotional devastation that leaves the reader feeling empty and used* because honestly I need resolution, and I hate the type of #realism that makes me go “Well what was the fucking point, then”. This list is not comprehensive; if you’re in these fandoms, you’ve likely brushed up against them before. The majority of these authors are well-known, and some of these fics have been around longer than I’d like to be reminded. 

So - what qualifies a fic for this list, anyway? 

Tears and snotty sobbing. Everything on this list has made me cry and also given me emotional chills to some degree in order to make the cut.**

Before You Read: Take any warnings I list below seriously. If it’s something that will fuck you up in a bad way, then don’t read it. Don’t open the link. We all have things that are no-go’s. Full disclosure? I can’t read anything with graphic depictions of sexual assault, though mentions, allusions to, or mild/non-graphic depictions (ex. fade to black scenarios, fuzzy memory recall, etc.) don’t bother me. I take those tags and author’s notes seriously when I’m choosing what to read. Similarly, I’m pretty blasé about a lot of gore or body horror - except, specifically, when someone is rolling around in a pit of used needles (thanks for that, Saw movies). Guess what I avoid reading? In short: be a responsible reader. Don’t be self-destructive and proceed with however much caution you require.

**As a baseline, please keep in mind that the first time I read JRRT’s The Two Towers, I threw my book across the room when I got to the end. Also, the scene in Whale Rider where Paikea is on stage is the one time I started gross-sobbing in a movie theatre. Make of that what you will.

This is marvelous kidfic - lots of good fluff. Except. You know - that one OC death that was so heart wrenching that you start bawling. The concept of magical tattoos in this fic is really nice, and Max - a prickly, rough and gruff tattoo artist is the best kind of unintentional parental mentor. The author hasn’t updated in some time, but they’ve also made a note that they’ll come back eventually when they’re ready to update to completion.

This fic has art by onthecount! It’s lovely. Anyway - Oh my god. When I talk about things resonating on some, soul-deep level. The way depression, and trauma, and PTSD is handled is... Well. I don’t go back to this often, but it’s because (for me) reading this fic is cleansing. Draco and Luna as therapists running a burgeoning wizarding practice is pretty great. If you couldn’t guess by reading the summary, this is an eventual drarry fic - and I’ll be upfront, if the idea of dating your former therapists squicks you out, don’t read. I like how it’s written out, it doesn’t feel inappropriate, or like any sort of power imbalance to me, but I can see where that wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea either.

Currently there are six completed works, and one in-progress (with at least one more slated by the author). Also known as ‘The modern!AU Roy/Ed fluffball fic (of doom)’, there is emotional baggage/angst throughout that hints at darker things but nothing too dreadful until the fourth entry in the series, “Another One of Those Heartbreak Songs”. Anxiety, depression, war crimes, rape and consent (and, fyi, one of the best descriptions of what exactly enthusiastic consent IS, is in the current entry of the series, “The Boiling Point”) are all being dealt and felt in this story. Safe Roy/Ed fic that starts with a coffeehouse!AU style meetcute and follows the deepening relationship between Roy (established lawyer who works with veterans) and Ed (making the transition from struggling grad student to frazzled professor), and has a delightful dose of Al/Win tossed in. One of the most relatable things about this series is how all the terrible things about your worst relationships don’t really hit you until you’re smack in the middle of the best relationship you’ve ever had, and it’s ROUGH. As the author warns before the fic, there is a character death in the first chapter. The story is an AU of Prisoner of Azkaban. Suicide, attempted suicide, and suicidal ideation are a big part of the story. Child abuse, death by child abuse (and the aftermath), ptsd, and the appalling effects of dementors on a castle full of kids are pretty central to the plot. Eventual Severitus. Currently there are two completed works in this series, and one ongoing. This is a ROLLERCOASTER, omg. Terminal illness, child abuse, explicit, agonizing torture, grief and mourning, bad coping mechanisms, self-harm, self-destructive behavior - hurt/comfort out the wazoo. Eventual Severitus, this is a good, substantial found-family fic with a developing sibling relationship between Harry and Draco. I really appreciate that Severus, Harry and Draco continue to step on each other’s toes as the story moves along. They get as much wrong as they get right, and the familial development is natural. Harry does struggle a bit with the newer experience of a paternal Severus weighted by the previous years of his antagonism and petty behavior. Severus struggles with balance, Draco struggles with extremes - behavior, feelings, intrusive thoughts - it’s a very well-rounded story. This is your explicit warning: The torture is incredibly graphic, and there are needles involved. If that sets you off, don’t read.

This is technically a series, since the author has written one companion piece from another character’s perspective for chapter 27 of the story. Oh my god. Dash is a sweet, sweet cinnamon roll who’s just trying to muddle his way through, and terrible things happen to him. This is not Dash the bully from the canon series. The endgame ship is Dash/Danny, and it is very slow-burn. Lots of hurt/comfort in this fic, and the author’s OC’s are incredibly fleshed out and wonderfully developed. Anxiety and panic attacks are pretty heavy in this story. Small town-typical homophobic slurs, make an appearance. Teenagers having sex with other teenagers is a thing. Mentions of abortion and teen pregnancy and unwanted pregnancy all happen later on. Mentions of suicidal thoughts and attempted suicide are plot points. Abusive and abused ex partners. Child abuse - emotional, mental and physical - is the heavy hitter in this story. It is explicit and painful and heartbreaking. Consider this your warning. ABUSE. Explicit, agonizing depictions of trauma, and being used as a bargaining chip between two different but equally terrible parents - if any of that sets you off, DO NOT READ THIS STORY.

This story goes hard on the angst right out of the gate. And I do mean hard. Oh my god. A literal mindfuck that will leave you gasping. Psychological manipulation and torture, mind rape, body horror, and non-sexual indecent treatment of a corpse to start with. However, there is a lot of good content in this hurt/comfort fic. The author has not only brought HP and KHR together but has blended elements and characters from Spirited Away, Cardcaptor Sakura and xxxHolic together in such a way that despite all the horror, there’s actually a lot of redeeming charm. You will never find a better interpretation of the Hibari family than the Hibari’s that Reighost writes about in her universes, and this story contains a flashback to the Hibari parents meetcute and it is adorable and hilarious. While this is a wip, it’s at a very good stopping point that’s more or less the end of a story arc - so don’t let the thoughts of a slow wip put you off. This is your warning: Mind-control and mind-control recovery, and gore, all quite explicit. If that sets you off, DO NOT READ. There’s a reason this story is so far down the list.

Wrong Boy Who Lived. Severitus, Slytherin!Harry. Drarry. If those are on your radar, this may be the story for you. Just beware literally everything else. Torture, mind-control and manipulation, child abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse, neglect, rape, cannibalism (is it cannibalism when it’s a werewolf eating a human child), trauma, destructive behavior, violent loss of limb, blood, gore, viscera, necromancy - these are just some of the explicit things that take place in the series. There are eight works in the Sacrifices Arc, and they mirror the canon Harry Potter series in that they start at mild and slightly odd and become darker and more horrifying. This is a very, very long series, and it hits a lot of milestones within the HP fandom. There are lovely moments of tenderness, the OC’s are magnificent and well-developed, and while heavy-handed from time to time, the author explores notions of morality and spends a lot of time on magical theory and world-building. If you haven’t read Sacrifices Arc and want more information, google it’s tvtropes page. I would recommend doing so just to determine whether or not the story is safe for you to read if you’re concerned about it, because there is a LOT going on. Otherwise, start with the first story in the series (“Saving Connor”) and proceed with caution. You will absolutely be wrung out before you finish.

Do you want to get fucking wrecked? Because this series will do it. Holy shit. I still can’t believe I got through it. This is so well-written and so. Fucking. Painful. The first entry in the series, Phantom of Truth, absolutely GOES THERE. The second entry is... everything that comes after. I don’t feel like it spoils anything to tell you that Maddie is not the person who captures Danny Phantom, or that she does not know he’s her son. Make of that what you will. Also, the first story does have a good resolution and does not end on a cliffhanger, so if you need to take a break after, you should. Bonding happens, and I wouldn’t call it Stockholm Syndrome, since it’s between Maddie and Danny, but I also wouldn’t say it doesn’t overlap. This story is absolute fucking angst. Shadow of a Doubt explores not only the traumatic repercussions on Maddie and Danny and their relationship, but on their friends, family, acquaintances and even enemies. There are some very good OC’s that come into play later on. You know, between all the angst and pain. Tread carefully: If you think you’ll be set off by torture and abuse, DO NOT READ THIS FIC. I cannot stress that enough.

This is a huge pale-tango clusterfuck and it’s glorious. The world-building is insane. Richly developed OC’s, good use of languages, images that a slowly incorporated into a story of increasing breadth and complexity - and a fucking bombshell that will hit you really, really hard about midway through the story. So much pain. Again, this is another series with a tvtropes page that you should visit if you have any concerns before reading, because there is just that much going on. I was also tagged a couple weeks ago by @incognitajones, so I’m going to answer their all 22 questions in one long post, so—be aware of that.

What is your favorite fandom to write for?

I think my favorite fandom to write for would have to be whatever fandom is in the forefront of my mind. I’m not exactly one to hop from fandom to fandom. It’s more - here’s the current fixation, watch how it takes over my life. It’s how it’s been since…as far as I can remember.

So, I guess for an actual answer, it would mean The Punisher, which—I’m not going to lie—I started about thinking about writing for before I watched anything from either Daredevil or The Punisher. And I thought to myself, I have to be good and start from the beginning, but I didn’t feel like slogging through DDS1 (still don’t), so I said fuck it and started season two. Best. Decision. ever.

Remember - do whatever the hell you want.

What is your most “hot take” of a headcanon?

Hmmmmmm. That’s a good question.

For Star Wars, I’d say that Padme is definitely force sensitive as fuck (which also probably explains why I bring her in as a Force Ghost in all my Sequel Trilogy fic. Also, Leia Fucking Badass Organa is more force sensitive than Luke.

For Daredevil/The Punisher, I head canon that Karen doesn’t actually think of Matt as her ex-boyfriend. I really don’t. They went on a date and a half, and made out once. (I will give them credit for having a nice make-out scene, even though I definitely do not ship them and Matt’s not high in my hierarchy of favorite Netflix-MCU characters).

Is there a trope you just can’t stand?

I’d have to say a tie between ABO and Poly, but now that I’m typing it, ABO definitely comes out ahead. I just can’t. For poly ships, it has to be written REALLY well for me to be about it.

But mostly just, no.

In what writing area or style would you most like to improve?

I’d love to get better at action scenes. I’m great at exposition and dialogue, and dropping epic plot-twist bombs, but fight scenes are hard, yo.

What’s an AU you’d like to write but haven’t, and why haven’t you written it?

Since binging Star Trek Discovery this year, I really want to do a Kastle/Star Trek Disco AU, and that’s if I have to pick an AU. I’m really best served in the canon-divergence side of fandom, but if there’s one I’d like to try to tackle eventually (like after The Big Indulgence), it would be that one. Especially after how ST:D pulled off the season 2 finale, because holy shit.

What is your best writing tip?

Just write. Inspiration isn’t going to hit every single day, but if you want to be a consistent writer and churn out fic at whatever pace you want (or even your own original fiction work), then you have to just write. It doesn’t matter if it’s shit, as long as you get words on the page, you can go back and make them suck less.

Name a writer who has influenced your writing style, and how.

That woman who wrote Harry Potter (whose name I do not like using anymore, because reasons) inspired me to be interested in fantasy, and open the door to my love of reading and creating stories (including stories that are, you know, better).

Which character do you wish you wrote more about, and why don’t you?

I want to write more Mitchell Ellison, specifically Ellison interacting with Frank. The stories I read where they meet are some of my favorites. The only thing stopping me is that I haven’t had the chance to fit him into any of my current plots…yet.

How do you deal with writer’s block?

I have 2 favorite things to do. One is to just talk out the overall plot of the fic or story with a friend (that usually helps me fill and plot holes and get around blocks), or I go on a walk and run through the story in my head. That’s a great way to go about it.

If you wrote a story that was a fusion of two separate fandoms, which would they be?

Well, I’d also like to write a Kastle/Veronica Mars fusion, and damnit now I have another potential plot bunny to throw into my ALREADY FULL HUTCH DAMMIT.

Since cookie dough shops (like, places that are just like ice cream shops, but they sell edible cookie dough instead) are super in right now, there’s a shop around the corner from my place, and it’s super dangerous. I try to go only when I have something big to celebrate.

As a child, did you have a favourite toy or stuffed animal?

I had (and still have) a yellow blanket that’s super worn and threadbare and soft. It still lives with me in my bed. I’ve also had a stuffed cow since. Was 17 that’s traveled with me wherever I’ve lived. Including 10 months in Alabama.
