Viewing art through a moralistic lens is bad analysis and not fun. We know this.

But I wonder if people who filter all media through a political lens realize that they're doing exactly the same thing. When they complain that a given piece of media falls short on its political messaging.

Like there is absolutely a way to talk about media politically that is not moralistic. but no one on this website does that.

A piece of art can be well executed and compelling and original and innovative and thought-provoking and have terrible politics. it's still good art. A piece of art can have perfect politics and still be absolute shit as art. if you don't understand this you're never going to understand art and you're going to be able to enjoy very little of it.

Really weird seeing photos of my pre-transition self and thinking “yup, that’s me” and not feeling insecure about it. Like my hair is almost the exact style and length it was RIGHT before I came out. I’m older now, and I’ve got a full beard, but otherwise I look pretty much the same.

And I think a year ago that would have made me really self conscious. Part of the reason I used to shave my head is I ALWAYS had my hair long as a kid, so having it GONE made me look like a totally different person. And for a while, I wanted that. I wanted distance from the insecure, scared kid I used to be.

But now I look in the mirror, and I see the same shoulder length hair I had back then. And I think about the moment I decided to finally come out, when I looked in the mirror late one night and saw a reflection a lot like this one. I looked in my own eyes and saw something so tired, so lonely there, and after years of feeling out of place I finally decided I have to do something about this.

And I look in the mirror today and I just think: There she is. There’s that girl I used to be. There’s that girl I worried about leaving behind, that girl who always felt so out of placing being a girl, but felt too scared to do anything about it.

I spent so long running from that girl. I spent years thinking I’d killed her to become the man I am today. But I didn’t. She’s right here.

I have the same shoulder length hair she does. I’m wearing her favorite pair of earrings, the ones she got at a craft fair years and years ago. But I also have a beard, and I’m wearing a men’s flannel from the thrift shop downtown, and I have a healthy weight on my bones.

I look in the mirror and I see that girl, and I also see a man, I see me, and I feel so indescribably, overwhelmingly happy.

Because I didn’t leave her behind. I didn’t bury her to become who she always wanted to be. I tucked her away, deep inside me until it was safe for her to come out. I am not her, but I was her, and I love her. And I am so happy she can finally know what it feels like to not have to pretend. I am so glad that after an entire childhood in the dark, that little girl gets to feel the sun on her face.

Actually, you know what? I'm not going to be spending many words on this in the full *sigh* review, so I might as well pull it out as a sign to tap:

Stop hiding behind 'it should have been longer' as the excuse for why a piece of media either doesn't work for you or actively screws up.

Yes, every season of anime being twelve 20-minute episodes is an unfair restriction on long-form storytelling. But come on. Four hours is *plenty* of time to tell a compelling, emotionally-affecting story.

Pay attention to where that time is spent and what that tells you about the creators' priorities, instead of appealing to some imagined 'perfect' longer version. Not everything has or needs an expanded version to justify the things you liked about it, and not everything can be saved with a director's cut.

They released the thing as it stands and should be judged accordingly.
