question
has it ever happened in an rtc production where the character who sings dream of life isn't jane doe? like does it have to be her?
because i have a thought, that is kind of morbid and gross but could be done with projections and/or special effects i think
what if it was penny's decapitated head singing

a non-exhaustive list of details about the broadway production of assassins that i only noticed recently:
after the balladeer burns a page out of booth's journal and tosses it on the ground, squeaky picks it up and reads it during the following scene
the shooting target silhouette banners for each assassin have the number of their president on them
moore is waving a tiny american flag during another national anthem 😭
the balladeer starts the show wearing a jacket but has it off by the ballad of czolgosz, almost like he's already slowly turning into oswald
after squeaky cuts her forehead during unworthy of your love, she appears with the scar on her face for the rest of the show
during the "what does a man do" speech czolgosz is changing the bandages on his hands and looking at the burns

Some thoughts on EPS 1-3 of Monster Next Door
I was thinking recently how I wish there were more movies or shows where an introverted/withdrawn/shy/whatever* character meets an extroverted/outgoing/confident/whatever** character and their disposition isn't seen as inherently flawed and that the extroverted character learns from them for a change. And then Monster Next Door comes along!
*&** I know these aren’t the same things, but they often get lumped together
I mean, I'm assuming they'll learn a little from each other, but I love that God (or Got?) adjusts his behaviour first and that it doesn't feel performative. He's not doing this solely to impress Diew and then embracing it sincerely later—he's enjoying himself from the outset (with the reading) and learning things about himself too (everything he says about wearing the mask because what Diew said made him realise he doesn't have to be who people assume he is when they see him). Diew might feel pressure from his mother, and has clearly had bad experiences in the past (as we see with his ex's friends making fun of him), but he has someone who's truly trying to understand him in God/Got, which is really lovely
And! I also like that Beer was like no I don't think it's weird that Diew's quiet, and that, while he extends the invitation to Diew to eat sushi with them, it's clearly a no pressure kind of invitation.
It's just so refreshing! (@byemambo has a much better and more detailed analysis here)
On the flipside, I like that, while Diew was annoyed by the noise etc. initially, there doesn't seem to be a lot of judgement on his side either? At least, not once God starts talking to him. Like, I find the introvert/extrovert (or similar) thing is often played as a rivals type of thing, but here it feels more like a neutral display of personality differences. Diew fears being judged because of past experiences, but he doesn't seem to have an inherentdistaste for more outgoing people. And he's doing things that are outside his comfort zone or wheelhouse, too! Like when he looks up hangover cures when he overhears God throwing up from being drunk! Or going to the concert, which I'm guessing is not his usual scene.
There's already a give and take and mutual understanding and, while I do like other dynamics, it's nice to see a love story start this way sometimes too
(Remind me to maybe talk a little about costuming/set design and the use of masks at some point)

Hey uh I need you to go more in depth about the "the characters know they're in a musical" thing because that is an insane take I've never heard about any musical in my entire life
hello i will do so and relish in it
okay to begin with this only applies to the stage production. both movies we are just watching what’s happening in real time imo. they have no idea wtf is going on look at them.
when the stage production opens damian has a whole little spiel like “good morning freshmen! welcome to high school!” and then cautionary tale happens and blah blah blah etc.
it’s also worth noting that. mean girls is objectively not a good musical. is it my favorite yes will i shank anyone outside the fandom who says this 100% BUT if you compare it to something like the prom with a similar setting/similar vague concept it’s really not. not great.
BUT i think this was kind of weirdly intentionally done.
again in the beginning during it roars and whatnot the animals that walk by are clearly just people in costumes and i think that’s also on purpose. the zebras have paintbrushes for manes for pete’s sake (like janis hello???)
SO i personally think that what we’re seeing is a musical that damian and janis co-wrote. i think damian did most of it and janis helped. she wrote i’d rather be me and things like that
i think it’s bad because it was written and produced by actual teenagers themselves. i am 100% convinced that they are seniors acting out the previous year as a sort of welcome to high school assembly for the incoming freshmen. mr. duvall said they could either do something creative to tell their story as an example of why Bullying Is Bad ™ or have detention for the entirety of the next year and they did this. the others have to act in it for the same reason and janis and damian just wanted to.
they’re acting as themselves and fully self aware the entire time. it feels like it’s happening in real time because it’s only been a few months since it did and the memories are fresh for all of them.
karen is the only one who breaks the fourth wall (except janis and damian at the top of the show and top of the second act) for GOOD REASON!! SHES DONE IT ALL BEFORE!!!!!
the reason janis and damian are the sort of narrators and the audience’s window into the show is because they’re the ones who are putting it on and producing it.
anyway in conclusion i fully believe they’re aware they’re in a musical and this is all happening like in their school gym or auditorium lmao
